ABSTRACT: A reliable determination of endogenous phosphorus (P) excretion is required to measure P utilization in chickens accurately. The objective of this study was to investigate phosphorus (P) retention in broilers fed diets formulated with different feed ingredients. Sixty-four 15-d old broiler chicks were fed diets in which part of the dietary P was provided from dicalcium phosphate, maize, barley or soybean. Level of supplementation of each ingredient was calculated to provide two levels of total P (4.5 or 5.0 g kg−1 feed). Birds received a single injection of 3 MBq of 32P to determine endogenous P excretion using the isotope dilution technique. Four days after injection, blood and excreta were collected for analysis of inorganic and radioactive P. There were no differences among diets in total (p = 0.37) or endogenous (p = 0.65) P excretion or in P retention (p = 0.37) regardless of the supplemental feed material used in each diet. Daily P retention was increased (p = 0.004) as P intake increased, but the proportion of P ingested that was retained was not affected (p = 0.23) by the level of dietary P. The use of an isotopic tracer allows for accurate estimation of endogenous P in excreta, ranging from 0.24 to 0.42 mg P g−1 dry matter intake. The retention of P in growing chickens was not changed when 10-20 % of total P was provided by maize, barley or soybean.

Abstract The objective of this study was to analyze different animal nutrition strategies from published papers to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) in dairy cattle. Ration data used (n = 32 diets) was obtained from 15 published papers selected according to differences between forage:concentrate ratio and crude protein (CP) content. An empirical model was used to estimate enteric methane emissions based on fiber and CP content in the diets. The N2O emission was calculated according to Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) recommendations. Differences between CH4 and N2O affected by FC or CP content were analyzed through a variance analysis. Furthermore, a correlation analysis was carried out to compare CP content and nitrogen excretion in feces, urine and milk. Estimations of enteric CH4 were not significantly different between diets with various forage content levels. Diets with high concentrate content had lower GHG intensity. Nitrogen excretion in feces and urine increased linearly as dietary protein level was increased from the lowest to the highest concentrations, but conversion of nitrogen intake to nitrogen excreted in milk was not affected by increasing dietary protein. In conclusion, dietary manipulation could decrease GHG emissions by unit of produced milk.

Resumen El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar diferentes estrategias de alimentación animal de diferentes artículos publicados para disminuir las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero (GEI), en particular metano y óxido nitroso, en ganado lechero. Datos de dietas usados (32 dietas) fueron obtenidos de 15 estudios publicados y seleccionados de acuerdo a diferencias entre la proporción de forraje: concentrado y el contenido de proteína cruda (PC). Se utilizó un modelo empírico para estimar las emisiones de metano entérico basado en el contenido de fibra y PC en las dietas. Las emisiones de N2O fueron calculadas de acuerdo a las recomendaciones del Grupo Intergubernamental de Expertos sobre el Cambio Climático (IPCC, por sus siglas en inglés). Diferencias entre CH4 y N2O afectados por el contenido de Forraje y PC, fueron analizados mediante un análisis de varianza. Además, se realizó un análisis de correlación para comparar el contenido de PC y la excreción de nitrógeno en el estiércol, la orina y la leche. No se presentaron diferencias significativas en estimaciones de CH4 de entérico entre dietas con distintos contenidos de forraje. Las dietas con mayor contenido de concentrado presentaron las menores intensidades de GEI. La excreción de nitrógeno en el estiércol y la orina se incrementó linealmente al aumentar el contenido de proteína, desde las concentraciones más bajas a las más altas, pero la conversión de nitrógeno consumido a nitrógeno en leche no se vio afectado por incrementos de proteína en la dieta. En conclusión, la manipulación de las raciones podría reducir las emisiones de GEI por unidad de producción de leche.

De acordo com a FAO, a produção de carne deve duplicar até 2050, devido à grande demanda e enriquecimento da população. Essa crescente necessidade apresenta um desafio ambiental para a produção intensiva de animais. A emissão de gás do efeito estufa, particularmente metano (CH4), se eleva com o aumento do número de animais, entretanto, estratégias de mitigação, tais como a manipulação da dieta, por exemplo, suplementação lipídica, ionóforos, defaunação e biotecnologias podem ajudar a reduzir a remessa por animal. Emissões por armazenamento de esterco também podem ser reduzidas se utilizarem tecnologias biológicas e termoquímicas com o benefício adicional de se produzir bio-energia durante o tratamento de resíduos animais. No que diz respeito ao animal, a redução da superalimentação proteica e a manutenção do equilíbrio entre proteína degradada no rúmen e proteína bypass podem reduzir a excreção de nitrogênio. Balanceamento de energia e suplementação proteica dos animais também podem oferecer melhor utilização dos nutrientes e, concomitantemente, diminuir o nitrogênio na urina, que contém altos níveis de ureia que, por sua vez, pode ser convertida em amônia quando misturada às fezes. Fósforo nos resíduos (estrume) representa um importante recurso renovável, e várias tecnologias existem para remover e recuperar esse mineral sem excluir precipitação química, remoção biológica e cristalização. O desenvolvimento de tecnologias relacionadas ao efeito estufa oferece oportunidade para a sustentabilidade ambiental.

According to FAO, meat production will double by 2050 to meet the demand of growing and more affluent population. The soaring demand presents an environmental challenge for intensive animal production. Greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), particularly methane (CH4) increases as animal numbers increase, however, mitigation strategies such as dietary manipulation (e.g., lipid supplementation), ionophores, defaunation and biotechnologies can be used to reduce emissions per animal. Emissions from manure storage can also be reduced using biological and thermochemical conversion technologies with added benefit of producing bio-energy while treating livestock wastes. At the animal level, reduction of overfeeding protein and balancing the amounts of protein degraded in rumen and those allowed to bypass the rumen will reduce N excretion. Synchronizing energy and protein supply to animals also offers better utilization of nutrients with concomitant decrease in urine N, which contains high levels of urea that can be converted into ammonia when mixed with feces. Phosphorus in manure represents a significant renewable resource and there are several technologies that remove and recover P from manure including chemical precipitation, biological P removal and crystallization. The development of technologies for GHG and nutrient reduction offers the opportunity for environmental sustainability.

A crescente demanda global por carne, em particular no Brasil, deverá aumentar a produção animal intensiva. Por conseguinte, os principais poluentes são o nitrogênio (N), fósforo (P) e gases de efeito de estufa (GEE). O nitrogênio pode ser um problema devido à lixiviação de nitrato para os corpos d'água, amônia e emissões de óxido nitroso para o ar. Carga de fósforo no solo decorrente da aplicação de esterco pode ser o problema principal, devido à tendência de o P acumular no solo e atingir os lençóis freáticos e rios. As fontes de emissões de GEE agrícolas incluem metano proveniente da fermentação entérica, armazenagem e e distribuição de estrume e óxido nitroso principalmente da aplicação de adubo na terra. A manipulação dietética tem demomstrado eficiência na redução da poluição de nutrientes/minerais e das emissões de GEE. Vários estudos têm demonstrado que a diminuição de proteína bruta na dieta podem reduzir substancialmente a excreção de N e a volatilização de amônia, sem comprometer a produtividade. Da mesma forma,a redução da ingestão de P em bovinos leiteiros pode reduzir a excreção de P em até 10%. Alterações do tipo de N e P consumidos e do nível energético da dieta sobre a quantidade e o tipo de N e P excretado também foram relatadas. A manipulação da dieta também tem impacto sobre a quantidade de emissões de gases de efeito estufa, em particular, a proveniente de fermentação entérica. A alimentação do gado com dietas contendo elevado teor de trigo baixo de fibra, por exemplo, reduz a produção de acetato no rúmen e acarreta menor produção de metano. Emissões decorrentes de estrume de animais alimentados com alto teor de fibra na dieta tendem a ser maiores. Evidenciou-se também que a dieta afeta as emissões de esterco no solo. Em decorrência do aumento do nível de produção para atender à demanda global de carne de ruminantes e produtos lácteos, a manipulação dietética será útil para atender às preocupações ambientais.

The growing global demand for meat and particularly in countries such as Brazil is expected to increase intensive animal production. Consequently the main pollutants of interest are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and greenhouse gases (GHG). Nitrogen can be a problem through nitrate leaching to water bodies, ammonia, and nitrous oxide emissions to air. Phosphorus loading in soil from manure application can be the main issue due to the tendency of P to accumulate in soil and leach to groundwater and rivers. The sources of agricultural GHG emissions include methane from enteric fermentation, manure storage and spreading, and nitrous oxide mainly from application of manure on land. Dietary manipulation has proven to be an effective tool to reduce nutrient/mineral pollution and GHG emissions. Several studies have shown that decreasing crude protein in the diet could reduce N excretion and ammonia volatilization substantially without compromising productivity. Similarly, reducing P intake in dairy cattle has been shown to reduce P excretion by up to 10%. Changing the type of N and P consumed and energy level of diet has also been reported to affect the amount and type of N and P excreted. Dietary manipulation also has an impact on the amount of GHG emissions, particularly, from enteric fermentation. Feeding cattle with a high starch and low fiber diet, for example, reduces acetate production in the rumen, and leads to lower methane production. Emissions from stored manure from high fiber fed animals tend to be higher. Evidence is also available that diet affects emissions from manure applied soil. As level of production is increased to meet global demand for ruminant meat and milk products, dietary manipulation will be useful in addressing environmental concerns.
