RESUMO O Português Brasileiro (PB) pode ter o elemento-Q in-situ com dois tipos de entoação na sentença: (a) com a entoação ascendente de uma sentença interrogativa direta sim/não, caso em que ela é interpretada como pergunta-eco e (b) com a entoação descendente de uma sentença declarativa, caso em que ela é interpretada como uma pergunta-Q ordinária. Para Kato (2013) esta última é um falso in-situ, com o elemento-Q movendo-se para uma posição baixa de Foco (cf. Miyagawa, 2001), enquanto a que se realiza com curva ascendente é analisada segundo a proposta de Kayne (1994), para quem o TP inteiro contendo o elemento-Q se move para Spec de C. No presente artigo, mantemos a análise da sentença com Q-in-situ, com curva descendente, mas reanalisaremos a sentença com interpretação de pergunta-eco como uma pergunta indireta sim/não. As línguas usadas para embasar esta análise do PB são o inglês, o francês e o japonês.

ABSTRACT Brazilian Portuguese (BP) can have the wh-element in-situ with two types of sentence intonation: (a) the rising intonation of a yes/no question, in which case it is interpreted as an echo question, and (b) the falling intonation, similar to that of a declarative sentence, in which case it is interpreted as an ordinary question. Kato (2013) analyzed the falling intonation type as a fake wh-in-situ, with a short movement of the wh-element to a lower focus position, inspired by Miyagawa’s (2001) proposal for Japanese whereas the rising intonation type was analyzed in accordance with Kayne’s (1994) proposal, with the whole TP containing the wh-element moving to Spec of C. In this article we maintain the analysis of the wh-in-situ with falling intonation as a fake in-situ but analyze the echo question as a short yes/no indirect question. The languages used to support this analysis of BP are English, French, and Japanese.

Resumen: O objetivo do presente artigo é investigar a variação gramatical, na gramática da criança antes da escolarização e na do adulto letrado, em um domínio que sofreu uma mudança diacrônica substancial: o sistema dos clíticos. A hipótese que sustenta este trabalho é que a criança, antes da escolarização, só apresenta formas determinadas pela aprendizagem por seleção, enquanto, após o início da escolarização, ela passa a apresentar variação de formas adquiridas por seleção e formas aprendidas via instrução, resultando, à primeira vista, em um processo de ‘mixagem’ (code-switching). A análise mostra, porém, que a variação no adulto pode se dar em um nível mais complexo do que o de mixagem, isto é, no de competição de gramáticas (Kroch 1994).

Abstract: The aim of the present article is to describe the grammatical variation found in the child before schooling, and in the literate adult, in a domain where a substantive diachronic change occurred in Brazilian Portuguese, namely in its clitic system. Our hypothesis is that, before schooling, the child will exhibit forms determined only by learning through selection, while after the beginning of schooling children will start to exhibit the forms learned both by selection and by instruction, resulting, at first sight, in a process of code-switching. The analysis shows, however, that the variation found in the adult can occur on a more complex level in the sense of Kroch’s (1994) grammar competition.

Este trabalho procura mostrar as contribuições de Chomsky para a área da psicolingüística, mais diretamente para explicar a aquisição de L1, e indiretamente para levantar questões de pesquisa em L2. Pode-se dizer que Chomsky contribuiu, primeiramente, ao argumentar contra outras abordagens, mas, sobretudo, por a) propor uma teoria sobre as línguas que dá conta de seus princípios universais e de seus parâmetros de variação e b) demonstrar que a teoria é diretamente relevante para as questões de aprendizagem e mais interessante do que a visão behaviorista e a construtivista piagetiana. O presente trabalho apresenta, a seguir, as teorias sobre L2 que surgiram a partir do modelo chomskiano.

This paper tries to show Chomsky's contributions to the area of psycholinguistics, more directly to explain first language acquisition, and less directly to raise questions regarding research in L2. Chomsky can be said to have contributed first by arguing against the current views on language learning, but also and mainly a) for his proposal of a theory of natural languages that accounts both for their invariant principles, but also for their crosslinguistic variation, and b) for showing that such theory is directly relevant to explain language acquisition problems, and more interesting than the behaviorist or constructionist views. The last part presents the theories about L2 acquisition derived from Chomsky's theories on language.

Este trabalho apresenta uma retrospectiva do conceito de parâmetro na teoria de Princípios e Parâmetros e mostra que: a) no primeiro estágio da teoria, os parâmetros eram concebidos como propriedades associadas a Princípios e b) no segundo estágio, como propriedades do léxico, mais especificamente do léxico funcional.. Essa segunda visão também sofreu uma evolução, de um conceito substantivo, para um conceito formal de classes funcionais. O trabalho discute ainda a noção de parâmetros associados a diferentes níveis de representação.

This paper presents an overview of the concept of parameter in the Principles and Parameters theory, showing that a) in the first stage parameters were conceived as variation associated to the Principles and b) in the second stage as properties of the lexicon, and more specifically as properties of functional categories. The latter view has also developed from a substantive conception of functional categories to a more formal abstract characterization of functional heads. The paper also discusses parameters related to different levels of representation.

This paper reports the generativist research developed in Brazil, from the standard theory to the Minimalist approach (Chomsky 1995), leaving out works in language aquisition, which are reported in Kato (1999). It contains three sections: I. The Standard Theory and the Extended Standard Theory; II. The Principles and Parameters Theory; III. The years 1998-1999.

Este trabalho procura mostrar que o termo "funcionalismo", frequentemente suposto como uma abordagem única ou uniforme na lingüística, precisa ser compreendida em suas diversas perspectivas. Inicio o trabalho apresentando o contraste conceitual semelhante às de Língua-I e Língua-E, em Chomsky (1986). Tal como na primeira concepção, a língua, na visão funcionalista, pode ser tomada como um modelo abstrato do mecanismo interno da mente responsável pela produção e percepção da língua ou , como na segunda, pode ser entendida como a descrição dos usos externos da língua. Também paralelamente aos formalistas, há funcionalistas que procuram a variação translingüística possível(os universais do uso da língua) e funcionalistas que procuram determinar as causas da variação intra-lingüística. Também procuro mostrar que os funcionalistas podem diferir na extensão do uso de variáveis sociais na explicação da forma lingüística.

This article shows that the term "functionalism", very often understood as a single or uniform approach in linguistics, has to be understood in its different perspectives. I start by presenting an opposing conception similar to the I-language vs E-language in Chomsky (1986). As in the latter conception , language can be understood as an abstract model of a mind internal mechanism responsible for language production and perception or, as in the former one, it can be the description of the external use of language. Also like with formalists , there are functionalists who look for cross-linguistic variation (and universals of language use) and functionalists who look for language internal variation. It is also shown that functionalists can differ in the extent to which social variables are considered in the explanation of linguistic form.
