Resumo A bananeira é uma das frutíferas mais cultivadas no mundo; entretanto, algumas doenças têm afetado sua produção, como a murcha de Fusarium. Em áreas onde há pressão de inóculo a, medida mais adequada no controle da doença é a utilização de cultivares resistentes. Diante disso, o objetivo deste trabalho foi obter somaclones de bananeira da cultivar ‘Prata-Anã’ resistentes à murcha de Fusarium pela indução de variação somaclonal. Para isso, ápices caulinares de bananeira ‘Prata-Anã’ foram estabelecidos in vitro, em meio de cultura MS. Em seguida, foram transferidos e subcuetivados mensalmente para meio MS, suplementado com AIA e sulfato de adenina, acrescidos de diferentes combinações de reguladores: 6-benzilaminopurina BAP (4 ml.L-1), Thidiazuron TDZ (1 ml.L-1) e Paclobutrazol PBZ (10 ml.L-1). Os tratamentos foram: T0: sem regulador; T1: BAP; T2: TDZ; T3: PBZ; T4: BAP + TDZ; T5: BAP + PBZ; T6: TDZ + PBZ; 7: BAP + TDZ + PBZ. As plantas regeneradas, após o décimo segundo subcultivo, foram posteriormente plantadas em caixas d’água contendo solo estéril e infestado com Foc,e aos 90 dias foram avaliadas quanto à resistência ao patógeno. Foram selecionados os variantes somaclonais T2-1 e T2-2, resultantes do tratamento 2 com TDZ, como resistentes. Esse resultado é promissor para o lançamento de uma nova variedade de bananeira resistente à murcha de Fusarium raça 1.

Abstract The banana tree is one of the most cultivated fruit globally; however, some diseases significantly affect its production, such as Fusarium wilt. The most appropriate measure for controlling this disease in areas with inoculum pressure is the use of resistant cultivars. Therefore, this study aimed to generate banana somaclones of the cultivar ‘Prata-Anã’ resistant to Fusarium wilt by inducing somaclonal variation. ‘Prata-Anã’ stem apexes were established in vitro in MS culture medium and, on a monthly basis, subcultivated in AIA and adenine sulfate supplemented MS medium with added plant regulators: 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP, 4 ml L-1), Thidiazuron (TDZ, 1 ml L-1), and Paclobutrazol (PBZ, 10 ml L-1). The treatments were: T0: no regulator, T1: BAP, T2: TDZ, T3: PBZ, T4: BAP + TDZ, T5: BAP + PBZ, T6: TDZ + PBZ, and T7: BAP + TDZ + PBZ. After the twelfth subculture, the regenerated plants were planted in boxes containing sterile soil infected with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, and evaluated after 90 days for resistance to the pathogen. Somaclonal variants T2-1 and T2-2, generated in Treatment 2, with TDZ, were selected as resistant. This result is promising for the launch of a new Fusarium race 1-resistant banana variety.

Resumo A Sigatoka-negra, causada pelo fungo Mycosphaerella fijiensis Morelat, é uma doença que afeta as folhas da bananeira, reduzindo a fotossíntese e ocasionando queda na produtividade. O controle baseia-se no uso de fungicidas; no entanto, essa prática eleva o custo de produção e pode causar impactos ambientais e na saúde. O plantio de cultivares resistentes mostra-se mais viável economicamente. O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar a fenotipagem de diploides, visando à identificação de genótipos resistentes. Foram fenotipados 31 acessos (30 com genoma AA e um com genoma AB), a partir da expressão dos sintomas da doença, por meio de escala de notas. Estimaramse a área abaixo da curva do progresso da doença (AACPD), o índice de severidade da doença (ID) e o índice de aumento da severidade da doença (AID). A variável AID mostrou-se eficiente na identificação de acessos de bananeira com resistência à Sigatoka-negra. O índice de seleção para o ranqueamento de acessos, com moderada resistência à Sigatoka-negra, permitiu identificar os genótipos com maior resistência quantitativa. Cinco acessos diploides foram resistentes (Krasan Saichon, Zebrina, Birmanie, Nº 118 e Tuu Gia), e oito moderadamente resistentes (PA Rayong, Pisang Cici, Malaccensis 1, 028003-01, Microcarpa, Pisang Lidi, Lilin e Malbut).

Abstract Black Sigatoka (black leaf streak disease) is caused by the fungus Mycosphaerella fijiensisMorelet. This phytopathogen colonizes banana leaves, resulting in reduced photosynthesis and decreased productivity. Fungicide applications are useful to control black Sigatoka; however, they increase production costs and can have adverse environmental and health impacts. The cultivation of resistant cultivars is regarded as a more economically viable option. The objective of this study was to perform diploid phenotyping in a set of wild banana accessions to identify resistant genotypes. A total of 31 accessions (30 with AA genome and one with AB genome) were phenotyped based on the presence of disease symptoms using a scoring scale. The area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC), the disease severity index (DI), and the disease severity increase index (DII) were estimated. The DII variable proved to be efficient in identifying banana accessions with black Sigatoka resistance. Likewise, the selection index for ranking accessions with moderate black Sigatoka resistance allowed us to identify those genotypes with the highest quantitative resistance. Five diploid accessions (Krasan Saichon, Zebrina, Birmanie, Nº 118, and Tuu Gia) were found to be resistant to this fungal disease; eight accessions (PA Rayong, Pisang Cici, Malaccensis 1, 028003- 01, Microcarpa, Pisang Lidi, Lilin, and Malbut) were moderately resistant.

RESUMO A interação Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) x nematoide e a variabilidade genética de Foc são os principais problemas com potencial de afetar o uso de variedades resistentes no manejo do mal-do-Panamá. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a interação entre Foc e Meloidogyne javanica sobre as cultivares de bananeiras, Prata Anã, Grande Naine e BRS Princesa. O experimento foi conduzido em DBC, com seis tratamentos e dez repetições, os quais se diferenciaram no tempo de inoculação de cada patógeno. Inoculação simultânea de Foc e M. javanica, inoculação de Foc uma semana antes de M. javanica e inoculação de M. javanica uma semana antes de Foc. Além dos controles, Foc isolado, M. javanica isolado e cultivares sem patógenos. As mudas foram transplantadas em vasos de três litros com solo estéril infestado com 40 gramas de inóculo de Foc na concentração de 1x106UFC/grama e 1000 ovos e J2 de M. javanica. Ao final de 56 dias, os tratamentos em 'Grande Naine' apresentaram os maiores fatores de reprodução de M. javanica. Em 'Prata Anã' não foi observado interação entre Foc x M. javanica. Os tratamentos com inoculação simultânea dos dois patógenos e com Foc uma semana antes, em 'BRS Princesa', apresentaram os maiores índices de doença (ID) externos, o que proporcionou as maiores AACPD. Os maiores ID internos foram observados nos tratamentos, Foc+Mj+Grande Naine, Foc+Mj+BRS Princesa, Mj+Grande Naine+Foc e Foc+BRS Princesa+Mj. A presença conjunta de M. javanica e Foc aumenta a severidade do mal-do-Panamá nas cultivares Grande Naine e BRS Princesa.

ABSTRACT The interaction Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) x nematode and the genetic variability of Foc are the main problems with potential to affect the use of resistant varieties in the management of the Panama disease. The objective of this work was to evaluate the interaction between Foc and Meloidogyne javanica on the banana of the Prata Anã, Grande Naine and BRS Princesa cultivars. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design, with six treatments and ten replications, which differed in the inoculation time of each pathogen. Simultaneous inoculation with Foc and M. javanica, inoculation with Foc one week before inoculation with M. javanica, and inoculation with M. javanica one week before inoculation with Foc. In addition to the controls, Foc isolated, M. javanica isolated, and cultivars without the pathogens. The seedlings were transplanted in 3-liter pots with sterile soil infested with 40 grams of Foc inoculum at the concentration of 1x106CFU/gram and 1000 eggs and J2 of M. javanica. At the end of 56 days, the treatments with 'Grande Naine' presented the highest reproduction factors of M. javanica. In the 'Prata Anã' no interaction was observed between Foc x M. javanica. The treatments with simultaneous inoculation of the two pathogens, and with Foc a week before, in the 'BRS Princesa', presented the highest external disease indices (DI), which promoted the highest AUDPC. The highest internal DI were observed in the treatments Foc+Mj+Grande Naine, Foc+Mj+BRS Princesa, Mj+Grande Naine+Foc and Foc+BRS Princesa+Mj. The simultaneous presence of M. javanica and Foc increases the severity of the Panama disease in Grande Naine and BRS Princesa cultivars.

RESUMO O murcha de Fusarium, causado por Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (FOC), é uma das principais doenças da cultura da bananeira. A principal estratégia de controle da doença faz-se com o uso de variedades resistentes, sendo que, para a sua obtenção, faz-se necessário identificar genótipos para utilização nos programas de melhoramento genético da cultura. O objetivo do presente estudo foi identificar fontes de resistência em acessos do Banco Ativo de Germoplasma (BAG) de Bananeira da Embrapa Mandioca e Fruticultura. Foram avaliados 41 acessos do BAG, sendo 17 diploides, 21 triploides e dois tetraploides. Também foram avaliados a área abaixo da curva do progresso da doença, o índice interno da doença e o período de incubação. Há variabilidade genética disponível entre os acessos do Banco de Germoplasma de Bananeira para resistência ao FOC, com destaque à imunidade expressada pelo genótipo M53. Os acessos Birmanie, PA Songkla, Pirua, Imperial, Poyo, Ambei, Walebo e Kongo FRF 1286 expressaram resistência.

ABSTRACT Fusarium wilt (syn= Panama disease), caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (FOC), is one of the most destructive diseases of banana, being genetic resistance the main management strategy for this disease. Since the pathogen is constantly evolving to supplant the genetic resistance, new sources of resistance must be investigated by genetic improvement programs aiming to developing new varieties. The objective of the present study was to identify sources of resistance from the different accessions maintained in the banana active germplasm bank (BAGB) at Embrapa Mandioca e Fruticultura. Forty-one BAGB accessions were evaluated, including 17 diploids, 21 triploids, and two tetraploids. The area under the disease progress curve, disease index, and incubation period were also evaluated. In relation to FOC resistance, there is genetic variability available among the BAGB accessions. The genotype M53 is notable for the complete resistance it expressed, and the accessions Birmanie, PA Songkla, Pirua, Imperial, Poyo, Ambei, Walebo, and Kongo FRF 1286 expressed quantitative resistance.

RESUMO Apesar da importância da passicultura no Brasil, essa atividade foi forçada a ser itinerante, devido à ocorrência de doenças nas regiões produtoras, em particular a fusariose. O uso de rizobactérias é uma alternativa de controle potencial, mas outras ações são necessárias para garantir a atividade dessas bactérias no campo. Objetivou-se avaliar a influência de três culturas monocotiledônicas sobre a atividade de rizobactérias antagonistas a Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. passiflorae (Fop). As rizobactérias foram isoladas de maracujazeiro e testadas para a produção de compostos difusíveis e voláteis, bem como quitinases que inibem Fop. De um total de 167 isolados, dois produziram compostos voláteis, 21 compostos difusíveis e 32 quitinases. Três combinações compatíveis de isolados que possuíam pelo menos dois mecanismos de ação contra Fop, e podiam crescer em ampla faixa de pH, foram aplicadas em vasos com sorgo, milho ou milheto, além de vasos em pousio (controle), em casa-de-vegetação. Avaliaram-se o carbono da biomassa microbiana, respiração basal do solo, quociente metabólico e atividade da enzima fosfatase ácida. A interação entre as espécies cultivadas e as combinações de rizobactérias foi significativa apenas para o quociente metabólico, cujos valores tendem a ser superiores no cultivo de milheto na combinação 3 (R77/R95/R104/R120), a mais diversificada metabolicamente. A mais alta atividade de fosfatase ácida também foi obtida com milheto. Os resultados relativos à atividade enzimática e quociente metabólico indicam que o milheto proporciona maior atividade dos antagonistas no solo.

ABSTRACT In spite of the importance of passion fruit cultivation in Brazil, this activity has been forced to be itinerant, due to the occurrence of diseases in producing regions, in particular fusariosis. The use of rhizobacteria is a potential control alternative, but other improvements are necessary to guarantee the activity of these bacteria in the field. This study aimed at evaluating the influence of three monocotyledonous groups on the activity of rhizobacteria antagonistic to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. passiflorae (Fop). Rhizobacteria were isolated from passion fruit plants and tested for the production of diffusible and volatile compounds, as well as chitinases that inhibit Fop. From a total of 167 isolates, two produced volatile compounds, 21 diffusible compounds and 32 chitinases. Three compatible combinations of isolates that had at least two action mechanisms against Fop and could grow in a wide pH range were applied in pots with sorghum, millet or maize, in addition to pots left fallow (control), in a greenhouse. The microbial biomass carbon, soil basal respiration, metabolic quotient and activity of the acid phosphatase enzyme were evaluated. The interaction between the cultivated species and rhizobacterial combinations was significant only for the metabolic quotient, whose values tended to be higher under millet cultivation in combination 3 (R77/R95/R104/R120), the most metabolically diversified one. The highest activity of acid phosphatase was also obtained with millet. The results for enzymatic activity and metabolic quotient indicate that millet provides a greater activity of the antagonists in the soil.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar fontes de resistência à podridão seca das raízes ocasionada por Fusarium sp. em acessos de mandioca. Inoculou-se uma suspensão (20 µL) de macroconídios de 11 isolados de Fusarium sp. em raízes de 353 acessos e sete variedades comerciais de mandioca. Dez dias após a inoculação, avaliou-se a área total colonizada pelo patógeno na polpa das raízes, por meio de análise de imagens digitais. A análise de agrupamento revelou a presença de cinco grupos quanto à resistência. As áreas lesionadas das raízes variaram de 18,28 a 1.096,07 mm² nos acessos BGM 1518 e BGM 556, respectivamente. Os genótipos BGM 1042, BGM 1552, BGM 1586, BGM 1598 e BGM 1692 apresentam as melhores características agronômicas.

The objective of this work was to identify sources of resistance to dry root rot induced by Fusarium sp. in cassava accessions. A macroconidial suspension (20 µL) of 11 Fusarium sp. isolates was inoculated in cassava roots, from 353 acessions plus seven commercial varieties. Ten days after inoculation, the total area colonized by the pathogen on the root pulp was evaluated by digital image analysis. Cluster analysis revealed the presence of five groups regarding resistance. The root lesion areas ranged from 18.28 to 1,096.07 mm² for the accessions BGM 1518 and BGM 556, respectively. The genotypes BGM 1042, BGM 1552, BGM 1586, BGM 1598, and BGM 1692 present the best agronomical traits.

Pseudomonas putida P286 and Bacillus thuringiensis B157 controlled coffee rust under greenhouse and field conditions. Now we studied the mechanism(s) of antagonism of both bacteria to Hemileia vastatrix. Bacterial effects on urediniospore germination and disease severity were evaluated in experiments with six treatments: (i) growth broth, (ii) supernatant centrifugation, (iii) bacterial cell centrifugation and re-suspension, (iv) UV inactivation of the bacteria, (v) 523 medium, and (vi) saline solution. The treatments i to iii reduced both spore germination and disease severity. Each isolate was applied at different concentrations and time periods before inoculation of H. vastatrix. The efficiency in controlling rust was reduced at the lowest concentrations and at the largest intervals between applications. In spatial separation experiments, both bacteria did not induce systemic protection, whereas protected locally the coffee plants against H. vastatrix. Therefore, the mechanism of both isolates against H. vastatrix is attributed to the production of antifungal compound (s).

This study aimed to characterize the resistance of 31 passion fruit (Passiflora sp.) genotypes to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. passiflorae (FOP). About 20 seedlings of each genotype were inoculated by immersing the roots in a suspension of 10(6) macroconidia mL-1 for five minutes and then transplanting them into pots containing a mixture of soil and sterile substrate. They were evaluated daily for 120 days for the occurrence of wilt symptoms and death. These data were used to calculate the area under the disease progress curve, for survival analysis and grouping. The mortality rate ranged from 0 to 100% and the AUDPC ranged from 0 for genotypes without symptoms of the disease to 6,650.63 for the hybrid HFOP-01. Genotypes were classified into four subgroups: resistant, moderately resistant, susceptible and highly susceptible. The resistance was genotype dependent, but no significant variation was found between the purple and the yellow P. edulis.

Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. passiflorae W.L. Gordon (FOP) is one of the most important fungal pathogens of passion fruits. Understanding molecular variation of isolates from different areas is of utmost importance. Molecular fingerprinting on 14 isolates of FOP were conducted using AFLP molecular markers (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism), and their genetic variability were estimated. Twenty-five AFLP primer combinations were selected for amplification of FOP isolates and one for Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense W.C. Snyder & H.N. Hansen (FOC), resulting in 99% polymorphic fragments, with an average of 40 fragments per primer combination. Specific fingerprints could be generated for most of the isolates evaluated; we observed a high power of discrimination of the AFLP primer combinations, with the presence/absence of up to 26 specific fragments per isolate. Thus, specific fingerprinting was obtained for 10 of the 15 isolates analyzed. The values of the polymorphic information content, the index and the resolving power of the markers showed wide variation and reflected the high informative contents of the primers used in the characterization of the FOP isolates. The FOP isolates were divided into four groups, irrespective of their geographic origins, with the allocation of 5, 7, 1 and 1 FOP isolates into Groups II, III, IV and V, respectively. A wide genetic diversity was observed in FOP isolates, which should be taken into consideration when implementing strategies for the improvement of passion fruit in the search for cultivars with multiple resistance to different isolates.

A antracnose foliar causada por Colletotrichum gloeosporioides é a doença mais importante da cebolicultura (Allium cepae) em Guidoval e Guiricema, MG. Para controle da doença, utilizam-se intensivamente fungicidas, principalmente benomil (Ben), o que tem sido pouco efetivo. Neste trabalho, testou-se a hipótese da existência de isolados de C. gloeosporioides resistentes ao Ben e se comparou a eficiência de diferentes fungicidas no controle do patógeno. Nas concentrações testadas, Ben impediu o crescimento micelial do fungo, e a germinação de conídios decresceu com o aumento da concentração do produto. Independente do isolado do patógeno e da concentração dos fungicidas, ocorreu maior inibição da germinação com Tiofanato metílico (Tm) + Mancozeb (Man), Man, Clorotalonil (Clo), Ben+Man, TM+Clo, Captan (Cap) e Procloraz (Pro). Excetuando-se Clo, os demais tratamentos inibiram totalmente o crescimento micelial do fungo. Em casa de vegetação, pulverizaram-se os diferentes tratamentos em plantas de cebola 'Texas Early Grano 502' (TEG502) e 24 h após inoculou-se o patógeno. Maior redução na intensidade da doença ocorreu com TM+Man, TM+Clo, Ben+Man, Man, Cap, Clo, Ben e Pro. Em plantas de TEG502, pulverizaram-se diferentes fungicidas imediatamente após, dois, quatro ou seis dias após inoculação do patógeno. Na pulverização imediatamente após a inoculação, Ben e Pro foram os mais eficientes; nas demais épocas, nenhum fungicida reduziu a severidade da doença.

Foliar anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides is the most important onion (Allium cepae) disease in Guiricema and Guidoval-MG. Fungicides, mostly benomyl (Ben), are intensively sprayed for disease control but they have been inefficient. We tested the hypothesis of occurrence of resistant isolates of C. gloeosporioides to Ben and compared fungicides for pathogen control. Conidial germination of the isolates decreased as Ben concentration increased and the fungicide completely prevented mycelial growth. For all pathogen isolates tested, disregarding fungicide concentration, methyl thyophanate (MT) + mancozeb (Man), Man, chlorothalonil (Chl), Ben+Man, TM+Clo, captan (Cap), and prochloraz (Pro) inhibited germination. All fungicide treatments but Chl, completely halted mycelial growth. Under greenhouse conditions each treatment was sprayed on onion 'Texas Early Grano 502' (TEG502) plants and the fungus was inoculated 24 h later. The most efficient treatments in reducing disease intensity were MT+Man, MT+Chl, Ben+Man, Man, Cap, Chl, Ben, and Pro. Ben, TM, Pro or Car was sprayed immediately after, or two, four, or six days after pathogen inoculation in plants of TEG502. Ben and Pro were the most efficient when sprayed right after inoculation; no fungicide controlled the disease at the other spray times.

The author discusses the significance of G. H. Mead's social psychology to Habermas's social thought. Two streams of the American pragmatism - the analytic philosophy of language and the behaviorist psychological theory - are united in Mead to criticize the philosophy of conscience. In spite of naming its theory as ''social behaviorism'', Mead breaks with classical behaviorism in so far as he emphasizes the individual's internal experience and presupposes the ''social whole'' in it. Finally, the article shows how the theory of communicative action claims to incorporate and, at the same time, to overcome that approach.

A partir de uma análise crítica da teoria econômica da democracia de Downs, examinam-se, em termos do problema da "seleção adversa" de Ackerlof, os efeitos da assimetria de informação entre candidatos (com taxas diferentes de demagogia) e eleitores (com níveis diferentes de conhecimento), contra o pano de fundo da relação entre divisão de trabalho e democracia.

On the basis of an analysis of Downs' economic theory of democracy the effects of information asymmetry between candidates (with different demagogy rates) and electors (with different knowledge rates) are examined in terms of Ackerlof 's "adverse selection" problem and against the background of the relationship between division of labour and democracy.

Habermas' thesis according to which Marxism is a variant of the philosophy of consciousness is contested. Historical materialism is reconstructed on the basis of the inter-relationship between the categories work and language. Thus the possibility is opened of a recuperation of the Marxist critique of the modern institutions: the state and the capitalist firm. It is argued that Habermas' attempt to escape from the mesh of the philosophy of consciousness ends by relapsing in what the Author calls social solipsism
