RESUMO: A morfometria de frutos e sementes é uma informação útil e importante para fenotipagem e caracterização genética de espécies vegetais com potencial econômico e, para a conservação de espécies ameaçadas, como é o caso de Butia purpurascens. Nesse estudo, determinamos comparativamente as características morfométricas de frutos e pirênios entre morfotipos amarelo e magenta de B. purpurascens, localizados em quatro localidades diferentes (populações). Beneficiamos 1380 frutos, coletados em 69 indivíduos. Avaliamos o comprimento, largura e o peso dos frutos e pirênios, a massa fresca e seca da polpa, e a porcentagem de umidade da polpa. O morfotipo amarelo apresentou frutos maiores e mais pesados do que o morfotipo magenta. Diferenças morfométricas também foram notórias entre as quatro populações, sugerindo que a fragmentação de ecossistemas pode causar efeitos genéticos deletérios em B. purpurascens ao longo do tempo.

ABSTRACT: Morphometry of fruits and seeds is a useful and important information for phenotyping and genetic characterization of crop plant species and, for conservation of endangered species, as is the case of Butia purpurascens Glassman. In this study, we determined comparatively the morphometric features of fruits and pyrenes between yellow and magenta B. purpurascens morphotypes, located in four different sites (populations). We processed 1380 fruits collected from 69 individuals. We evaluated the length, width and weight of the fruits and pyrenes, the fresh and dry pulp mass, and percentage of pulp moisture. Yellow morph showed larger and heavier fruits than magenta morph. Morphometric differences were also evident among the four populations, suggesting that ecosystems fragmentation can cause deleterious genetic effects in B. purpurascens in long-term.

RESUMO Estudos comparativos entre diferentes estratos de florestas em sucessão ecológica são importantes para entender a dinâmica florestal. O estudo avaliou aspectos florísticos, fitossociológicos e ecológicos entre os estratos adulto e regenerante de um fragmento urbano de floresta estacional semidecidual, em Jataí, Goiás. Nas últimas décadas, a vegetação que era tipicamente savânica tem se tornado uma floresta. As árvores adultas (diâmetro a altura do peito, DAP ≥ 5 cm) foram amostradas em 12 parcelas permanentes de 200m². Em cada uma delas, sub-parcelas de 25m² foram amostradas para o estrato regenerante, que compreendeu indivíduos com DAP < 5cm e altura ≥ 1m. Regenerantes tiveram maior riqueza (31 espécies), com duas espécies a mais do que os adultos. Houve baixa similaridade florística e estrutural entre os estratos, indicando uma substituição de espécies ao longo do tempo. A diversidade de Shannon foi significativamente menor para o estrato arbóreo (teste t), visto que apresentou baixa equabilidade, com dominância ecológica de poucas espécies. Ambos os estratos tiveram elevada proporção de espécies pioneiras, quando comparado com outros estudos. Zoocoria e espécies de ambientes florestais foram expressivamente mais abundantes no estrato regenerante. O estudo revelou um fragmento em franco processo de sucessão secundária e vulnerabilidade diante de pressões antrópicas, sendo importante os cuidados quanto à sua conservação.

ABSTRACT Comparative studies between different strata of forests in ecological succession are important to understand the forest dynamics. The study evaluated floristic, phytosociological and ecological aspects between the tree and regenerating strata of an urban fragment of semideciduous forest, in Jataí, Goiás state. In the last decades, the vegetation that was typically savanna has become a forest. Trees (diameter at breast height, DBH ≥ 5 cm) were sampled in 12 permanent 200m² plots. In each of them, 25m² sub-plots were sampled for the regenerant stratum, which comprised individuals with DBH <5cm and height ≥ 1m. Regenerants had greater richness (31 species), with two more species than adults. There was low floristic and structural similarity between the strata, indicating a replacement of species over time. Shannon’s diversity was significantly lower for the tree stratum (t test), since it presented low equability, with ecological dominance of few species. Both strata had a high proportion of pioneer species, when compared to other studies. Zoochory and species of forest environments were significantly more abundant in the regenerating stratum. The study revealed a fragment in a frank process of secondary succession and vulnerability in the face of anthropic pressures, with care regarding its conservation being important.

Abstract Comparative studies of tree dynamics can be useful for the conservation of forest fragments in the Cerrado. We tested if the successional dynamics in fragments of semideciduous forest (SF) and cerradão (CE) are influenced by edge effects (EE). Two surveys were carried out with plots allocation in both physiognomies, from the edge towards the interior of the fragments. All trees with diameter at breast height ≥ 5cm were measured, identified and classified (ecological groups). Both physiognomies showed high recruitment and mortality rates when compared with other forests in Cerrado. We found an EE on tree density (SF), and on mortality, total basal area and basal area of dead (CE), although do not so notorious on a short-term scale. Probably because EE did not influence the ecological groups and canopy cover. Our results suggest that the forest fragmentation can act as a disturbance agent, causing changes in the tree dynamics of the Cerrado forests.

Resumo A variação fitofisionômica do Cerrado brasileiro é intensa e estudos fitossociológicos podem fornecer subsídios sobre quais fatores são responsáveis por essa heterogeneidade ambiental. Nesse sentido, esse estudo teve o objetivo de avaliar a estrutura da vegetação lenhosa de três áreas de cerrado sentido restrito, no município de Jataí - GO, buscando discutir os achados com o histórico de perturbação de cada área e aspectos físicos dos solos. Foram alocadas dez parcelas contíguas de 20x50 m em cada área, totalizando três hectares de levantamento no total. Incluíram-se na amostragem todos os troncos com diâmetro ≥ 5 cm, medidos a 30 cm do solo. As áreas apresentaram diferenças quanto à estrutura da vegetação lenhosa com formações mais abertas e outras mais densas (densidade de 991 a 1859 ind.ha-1 e área basal de 10,85 a 17,68 m2.ha-1). A riqueza florística variou de 70 a 82 espécies. Apesar de haver uma mistura de elementos florísticos savânicos e florestais entre as áreas, detectou-se maior domínio de espécies savânicas. Os padrões florístico e estrutural indicaram heterogeneidade nas comunidades em função de diferenças texturais do solo e incêndios. Isso reforça a importância da preservação de formações savânicas no sudoeste do estado para entender variações estruturais e florísticas e, consequentemente, fornecer informações para outros estudos sobre os aspectos ecológicos relacionados a eles.

Abstract The physiognomy variation of Brazilian Cerrado is intense and phytosociological studies can provide subsidies on which factors are responsible for this environmental heterogeneity. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the structure of the woody vegetation of three sites of Cerrado sensu stricto, in the municipality of Jataí, state of Goiás, Brazil, aiming to discuss the findings with the history of disturbance of each site and physical aspects of the soils. Ten 20 x 50 m contiguous plots of were allocated in each area, totaling three hectares of survey in total. We included in the sample all trunks with diameter ≥ 5 cm, measured at 30 cm of the ground. The sites showed differences in wood structure, ranging from more open to more dense areas (density ranging 991-1859 ind.ha-1 and basal area ranging from 10.85 to 17.68 m2.ha-1). The richness in the areas ranged from 70 to 82 as well as the species composition. Although, there is a mix of savanna and forest floristic elements, we detected higher domain of typical savanna species for the three areas. The floristic and structural patterns indicated heterogeneity in the communities, even geographically close, possibly due to soil texture differences. This reinforces the importance of the preservation of savanna formations in the southwest of Goiás state to understand the structural and floristic variations and, consequently, to provide information for other studies on the ecological aspects related to them.

Resumo Campo de murundus ou covoal é uma das fitofisionomias do Cerrado menos conhecidas floristicamente, cujo componente arbóreo é mais estudado que o componente herbáceo-subarbustivo. Apresentamos o levantamento florístico da família Asteraceae em um campo de murundus do município de Jataí, Goiás. As coletas foram realizadas por meio do método de caminhamento. Um total de 41 espécies foi registrado na área estudada, das quais 34 são autóctones e sete espécies são alóctones para o Cerrado. O número de espécies encontrado é superior ao registrado em campos de murundus do Parque Estadual do Araguaia e apenas Ayapana amygdalina e Chrysolaena obovata são comuns às duas áreas. As espécies comuns entre a área estudada e 14 outras localidades no Cerrado são Achyrocline alata, A. satureioides, Ayapana amygdalina, Mikania officinalis e Chromolaena laevigata. Algumas espécies são endêmicas e dentre estas, duas são restritas ao Cerrado, uma delas inclusive nova para a ciência. Do total apenas uma está registrada ocorrendo em campos de murundus na lista do Cerrado. Este estudo é o primeiro realizado para a família Asteraceae em campo de murundus e espera-se contribuir com a ampliação do conhecimento sobre as espécies que ocorrem nesta fisionomia.

Abstract Campos de murundus or covoal (earthmounds) is one of the less floristically known phytophysiognomies of the Cerrado, in which the arboreal component is more studied than the herbaceous-subshrub components. We present a floristic survey of Asteraceae family in campo de murundus in the municipality of Jataí, state of Goias, Brazil. The collections were made using the walking method. A total of 41 species was recorded, from which 34 species are autochthonous and seven are allochthonous to the Cerrado. The species number found is higher than that registered in campo de murundu” of Araguaia State Park, and only Ayapana amygdalina and Chrysolaena obovata are common to both areas. Species common to the studied area and 14 other localities in the Cerrado are Achyrocline alata, A. satureioides, Ayapana amygdalina, Mikania officinalis, and Chromolaena laevigata. Some species are endemic and from these, two are restricted to the Cerrado, one of them is new to science. Only one of the registered species is recorded as occurring in campos de murundus in the Brazilian Cerrado checklist. This study is the first carried out for Asteraceae in campos de murundus and we hope to contribute to expanding the knowledge of species occurring in this phytophysiognomy.

RESUMO O estudo da arborização urbana pode gerar grandes contribuições ao planejamento urbano, principalmente para cidades novas e com crescimento acelerado. Visando quantificar e qualificar a arborização urbana em Cassilândia, Chapadão do Sul, Costa Rica e Paranaíba, em Mato Grosso do Sul, realizamos um levantamento das espécies arbóreas presentes em 30 quadras de cada cidade. Todas as árvores foram avaliadas quanto ao porte arbóreo, local do plantio, poda e estado físico de conservação. As espécies foram classificadas em nativas ou exóticas. Foram amostrados 3180 indivíduos e 89 espécies, com maior abundância de árvores nativas do Brasil (69%), embora a riqueza de espécies exóticas tenha sido maior (78%). Chapadão do Sul teve o maior número de indivíduos e Paranaíba, o menor. O índice de diversidade foi baixo para todas as cidades, especialmente por causa do grande número de oitizeiros (Licania tomentosa) registrados, totalizando mais da metade das árvores levantadas. O uso generalizado de uma espécie, como constatado para o oitizeiro nesse estudo, não é recomendável, pois reduz a diversidade e aumenta as chances de doenças e pragas em árvores no meio urbano. Entretanto, foi observado uma elevada incidência de espécies utilizadas na arborização urbana, sendo que aspectos de manutenção das árvores, como a poda, foram satisfatórios nas quatro cidades estudadas.

ABSTRACT The study of urban arborization can generate great contributions to urban planning, mainly for new and fast-growing cities. Aiming quantifying and qualifying urban arborization in Cassilândia, Chapadão do Sul, Costa Rica and Paranaíba, in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil, we performed a survey of tree species present in 30 blocks of each city. All trees were evaluated regarding tree size, planting site, pruning and physical conservation status. The species were classified native or exotic. There were 3180 individuals and 89 species, with the highest abundance of Brazilian native trees (69%), although the richness of exotic species was higher (78%). Chapadão do Sul had the largest individuals number and Paranaíba, the smallest. The diversity index was low for all cities, especially because of the large number of oitizeiros (Licania tomentosa) registered, totaling more than half of the trees surveyed. The widespread use of only one species, as found for the oitizeiro in this study, is not recommended because it reduces diversity and increases the chances of diseases and pests in trees in the urban environment. However, it was observed a high incidence of species used in urban arborization, and tree maintenance aspects, such as pruning, were satisfactory in the four studied cities.

The input of particulate and dissolved organic matter (POM and DOM, respectively) from terrestrial ecosystem drainage basins is an important energy and nutrient source in limnic food chains. Studies indicated that semi-deciduous seasonal forests located in drainage areas in Brazil have the potential to produce 7.5 - 10.3 Mg ha−1/year of POM. The global increase in vegetation destruction, such as forests, threatens this allochthonous resource and can have significant impacts on river and lake communities and food chains. Therefore, it is critical that exploitation and occupation protocols are updated to protect the transition areas between terrestrial and limnic ecosystems. This review highlights the existing knowledge of these ecosystem interactions and proposes responsible sustainable methods for converting the vegetation in drainage basins. This was based on Brazilian ecosystem data and the new "Brazilian Forest Code." This study also considers the importance of including flood tracks in permanently protected areas to improve Brazilian legislation and protect hydric resources.

Os efeitos do fogo sobre a mortalidade de árvores podem alterar a composição e estrutura da vegetação, dependendo da intensidade, frequência e duração das queimadas. Monitoramos áreas de floresta sujeitas a diferentes frequências de fogo no Parque Estadual da Serra Azul, Barra do Garças, MT: 0,9 ha queimaram em 2007 (Q1) e 0,9 ha em 2005 e 2007 (Q2). A dinâmica foi referente ao intervalo médio de 2,02 anos, de forma que o primeiro levantamento (T1) ocorreu em outubro/2006-maio/2007 e o segundo levantamento (T2) em março/2009, considerando indivíduos com PAP > 15 cm. A diversidade (H') e a riqueza de espécies (estimada por Jackknife) foram maiores em Q2, nos dois levantamentos. Ocorreu a diminuição significativa na densidade em Q1 e Q2, mas a proporção de indivíduos mortos foi maior em Q1. Os parâmetros da dinâmica baseados no número de indivíduos e na área basal não diferiram entre Q1 e Q2. O aumento da diversidade na área sujeita a maior frequência de queimadas pode ser explicada pela hipótese de distúrbio intermediário. Entretanto, apesar da mortalidade e recrutamento não terem diferido entre Q1 e Q2, as altas taxas de mudança, independentes da frequência do fogo, sugerem futuras alterações florísticas e estruturais na floresta, caso as queimadas continuem ocorrendo na área.

The effects of fire on tree mortality can change floristic and forest structure depending on intensity, frequency and the length of a fire. Areas of semideciduous forest in Parque Estadual da Serra Azul, Barra do Garças (MT, Brazil), exposed to different frequencies of fire, were monitored: 0.9 ha burned in 2007 (Q1) and 0.9 ha in 2005 and 2007 (Q2). The dynamics were based on the average interval of 2.02 years between T1 (outubro/2006-maio/2007) and T2 (March/2009), including individuals with PAP > 15 cm. Diversity (H') and species richness (estimated by Jackknife) were higher in Q2, in both at T1 and T2. The decrease of tree density between surveys was significant for Q1 and Q2, but the proportion of deaths was higher in Q1. There were no differences in the dynamic parameters between Q1 and Q2 when considering both the number of individuals and basal area. The increase of diversity in Q2 may be partially explained by the hypothesis of intermediate disturbance. However, despite the absence of differences in recruitment and mortality between Q1 and Q2, the high turnover rates, independent of fire frequency, suggest future changes in the flora and structure of the forest if fire continues to be frequent in the area.

In tropical forests, the environmental heterogeneity can provide niche partitioning at local scales and determine the diversity and plant species distribution. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the variations of tree species structure and distribution in response to relief and soil profile features in a portion of the largest remnant of Brazilian Atlantic rain forest. All trees ³ 5 cm diameter at breast height were recorded in two 0.99 ha plots. Topographic survey and a soil characterization were accomplished in both plots. Topsoil samples (0-20 cm) were taken from 88 quadrats and analyzed for chemical and particle size properties. Differences for both diversity and tree density were identified among three kinds of soils. A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that the specific abundance varied among the three kinds of soils mapped: a shallow Udept - Orthent / Aquent gradient, probably due to differences in soil drainage. Nutrient content was less likely to affect tree species composition and distribution than relief, pH, Al3+, and soil texture. Some species were randomly distributed and did not show restriction to relief and soil properties. However, preferences in niche occupation detected in this study, derived from the catenary environments found, rise up as an important explanation for the high tree species diversity in tropical forests.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar comparativamente a qualidade e quantidade de árvores plantadas no perímetro urbano da cidade de Jataí, GO. Para possibilitar as comparações foi utilizado um mapa georreferenciado de todas as quadras da cidade de Jataí, as quais foram subdividas em três categorias, de acordo com o padrão de construção civil adotado: 1. alto/médio, 2. simples e 3. precário. Em cada categoria foi avaliada a arborização urbana de 60 quadras, escolhidas aleatoriamente no mapa, independentemente do bairro. Foram encontrados 1.953 indivíduos, sendo 1.853 de espécies exóticas e 100 de espécies nativas, totalizando 114 espécies, sendo a mais utilizada na arborização o oiti (Licania tomentosa), com 31% de todos os indivíduos. O número médio de árvores foi significativamente maior nos padrões alto/médio e simples do que no padrão precário. Com relação à posição na calçada, o padrão alto/médio apresentou melhor adequação de plantio. Espécies de médio e pequeno portes, bem como palmeiras, foram encontradas em maior quantidade no padrão alto/médio. Este estudo mostrou claras discrepâncias na arborização urbana da cidade em relação aos padrões construtivos. Dessa forma, os resultados podem subsidiar técnicos da Prefeitura Municipal de Jataí, bem como a população, no sentido de instruir desde a melhor forma de plantio e escolha de mudas apropriadas até a manutenção delas após a maturação.

The study aimed to comparatively evaluate the quality and quantity of tree planting in the urban perimeter of Jataí city, Brazilian central region. To make comparisons possible, a georeferenced map of all blocks in the city was used. These were partitioned into three categories by the building parameters, denominated 1. high/medium, 2. simple and 3. precarious patterns. For each category the urban arborization of 60 blocks, randomly selected on the map, independent of the quarter was evaluated. The survey detected 114 different species and 1953 trees, distributed into 1853 exotic and 100 native species. Oiti (Licania tomentosa) was the more common species used in arborization, with 31% of all trees surveyed. The tree average number was significantly higher in high/medium and simple patterns than the precarious pattern. When considering the sidewalk position, the high/medium pattern showed the greatest adjustments in planting. Medium and small tree weight species and palm trees were more abundant in high/medium patterns. This study showed evident differences in urban arborization between categories compared to the streets of the Jataí city. Thus, the results can allow and technically instruct the prefecture, as well as the entire population of this city about forms of better planting, choices of appropriate seedlings and maintenance until maturity.

Neste estudo, avaliou-se a estrutura do componente arbóreo de manchas de vegetação correspondentes à Floresta Estacional Semidecidual e dois cerradões, inseridas em um remanescente urbano composto também por uma mancha de mata de brejo. O levantamento compreendeu 1,32 ha, onde todos os indivíduos com perímetro à altura do peito > 5 cm foram amostrados. Registraram-se 141 espécies, distribuídas em 46 famílias botânicas, com diversidade de Shannon de 3,99. Fabaceae apresentou a maior riqueza de espécies no levantamento, corroborando o padrão encontrado em outros estudos sobre o bioma Cerrado. Maprounea guianensis teve os maiores valores relativos de densidade, freqüência e dominância no remanescente. A floresta estacional apresentou a maior riqueza florística e espécies características dessa formação, em comparação com demais pesquisas. Hirtella glandulosa apresentou o maior valor de importância no cerradão 2, o que evidencia a existência de um solo distrófico nessa fisionomia. Características estruturais similares entre o cerradão 2 e a floresta estacional e diversidade florística significativamente maior no cerradão 2 do que no cerradão 1, além da presença de espécies típicas de matas de brejo e floresta estacional no cerradão 2, evidenciavam áreas de transição no remanescente. No cerradão 1 foram registrados poucos indivíduos arbóreos nas menores classes de diâmetro. Isso provavelmente se deva às perturbações antrópicas constantes e variadas, indicando a necessidade de ações preventivas para a conservação e manejo desse patrimônio biológico.

The study evaluated the tree component structure of vegetation fragments consisted of semideciduous forest, two woody savannas (cerradão), inserted in an urban forest remnant, also consisting of a fragment of swamp forest. The survey comprised 1.32 hectares, where all trees with ³ 5 cm perimeter at breast height were recorded. A total of 141 species distributed in 46 botanical families with Shannon diversity index of 3.99 were recorded. Fabaceae showed the greatest species richness in the survey, corroborating the pattern found in other studies on the Cerrado Biome. Maprounea guianensis had the largest density, frequency and dominance relative values in the remnant. The semideciduous forest presented the largest floristic richness and characteristic species of that formation when compared with other studies. Hirtella glandulosa showed the largest importance value in the cerradão 2, suggesting the existence of a dystrophic soil in this physiognomy. The similar structural characteristics between cerradão 2 and semideciduous forest, tree species diversity significantly larger in cerradão 2 than in cerradão 1, besides the presence of typical species of swamp forests and semideciduous forest in cerradão 2 confirm the occurrence of transition areas in the remnant. Few individuals were recorded in the smallest diameter classes in cerradão 1. Continuous and varied human disturbances probably are responsible for this, indicating the need for conservation and management preventive actions of this biological patrimony.
