No presente estudo registramos diversos episódios de peixes recifais alimentando-se de epibiontes sobre o corpo de tartarugas marinhas (simbiose de limpeza) nas ilhas oceânicas do arquipélago de Fernando de Noronha e próximo a um naufrágio na costa de Pernambuco, nordeste do Brasil. Nove espécies de peixes recifais e três espécies de tartarugas envolvidas nas associações são aqui registradas. Além de nossos registros, apresentamos também um resumo da literatura sobre o tema. As posturas adotadas pelas tartarugas durante as interações estão relacionadas com os hábitos dos peixes associados. Associações alimentares entre peixes e tartarugas podem ser consideradas como um fenômeno local, embora comum.

In the present study we record several instances of reef fish species foraging on epibionts of sea turtles (cleaning symbiosis) at the oceanic islands of Fernando de Noronha Archipelago and near a shipwreck, both off the coast of Pernambuco State, northeast Brazil. Nine reef fish species and three turtle species involved in cleaning are herein recorded. Besides our records, a summary of the literature on this association type is presented. Postures adopted by turtles during the interaction are related to the habits of associated fishes. Feeding associations between fishes and turtles seem a localized, albeit common, phenomenon.

Uma visão geé apresentada sobre uma relação pouco documentada entre vertebrados recifais no Atlântico Sul Ocidental: rêmoras (Echeneidae) associadas a tartarugas marinhas. Duas espécies de rêmora ou pegador (Echeneis naucrates e Remora remora) e quatro de tartarugas (Caretta caretta, Chelonia mydas, Eretmochelys imbricata e Dermochelys coriacea) são aqui registradas em associações simbiônticas para o Atlântico Sul Ocidental. Echeneis naucrates foi registrada tanto na costa como em ilhas oceânicas, ao passo que R. remora foi registrada somente em ilhas oceânicas e região pelágica. A associação entre rêmoras e tartarugas é habitualmente considerada como forese, embora forrageamento, por parte das rêmoras, também esteja envolvido neste tipo de simbiose. Esta associação parece ser rara no Atlântico Sul Ocidental.

An overview is presented for a poorly documented relationship between reef vertebrates in Southwest Atlantic: remoras (Echeneidae) associated with marine turtles. Two remora species (Echeneis naucrates and Remora remora) and four turtle species (Caretta caretta, Chelonia mydas, Eretmochelys imbricata, and Dermochelys coriacea) are here recorded in symbiotic associations in the SW Atlantic. Echeneis naucrates was recorded both on the coast and on oceanic islands, whereas R. remora was recorded only at oceanic islands and in the open sea. The remora-turtle association is usually regarded as an instance of phoresis (hitchhiking), albeit feeding by the fish is also involved in this symbiosis type. This association seems to be rare in SW Atlantic.

Entre os peixes recifais, uma espécie fossadora nuclear em atividade de forrageamento pode atrair seguidores oportunistas que se alimentam de organismos expostos pela atividade do nuclear. O coió-voador Dactylopterus volitans alimenta-se de animais bentônicos, principalmente crustáceos e pequenos peixes, explorando o substrato com os primeiros raios externos de suas nadadeiras peitorais. Registramos o coió sendo seguido por dois predadores oportunistas, a guarajuba Caranx bartholomaei e a piraúna Cephalopholis fulva, em Fernando de Noronha, ao largo da costa Nordeste do Brasil. Apesar de não agir como uma espécie fossadora do substrato, o coió atua como uma espécie nuclear por explorar os tufos de algas e também pela sua passagem próxima às rochas e lajes, espantando e desentocando animais escondidos que, assim, tornam-se vulneráveis aos predadores.

Following behaviour among reef fishes involves mostly a digging nuclear species while foraging, which attracts opportunistic followers preying on the exposed organisms. The flying gurnard Dactylopterus volitans preys on benthic animals, mostly crustaceans and small fishes, scratching and probing the bottom with the inner rays of its pectoral fins. We recorded the flying gurnard being followed by two opportunistic predators, the yellow jack Caranx bartholomaei and the coney Cephalopholis fulva at Fernando de Noronha, off northeast Brazil. Albeit not actually digging the substrate, the flying gurnard acts as a nuclear species by exploring algae tufts and by its wandering near the boulders and ledges, disturbing and flushing out hidden animals which thus become available to predation.

Nas ilhas oceânicas de Fernando de Noronha, ao largo da costa Nordeste do Brasil, registramos tartarugas-de-pente (Eretmochelys imbricata) visitando estações de limpeza mantidas pelo camarão-palhaço (Stenopus hispidus). Este parece ser o primeiro registro de simbiose de limpeza entre tartarugas marinhas e camarões. Durante o seu forrageamento na planície recifal, as tartarugas visitavam e posavam nas estações regularmente. As mesmas estações eram visitadas por algumas espécies de peixes recifais, que aí posavam e eram limpas pelos camarões. Sugerimos aqui que a simbiose de limpeza entre tartarugas marinhas e camarões seja comum e difundida, porém passa despercebida devido à semelhança superficial entre uma tartaruga que esteja descansando e aquela posando e sendo limpa. Além disso, apresentamos uma origem putativa para a simbiose de limpeza entre tartarugas marinhas e camarões-limpadores, que segue etapas comportamentais relativamente simples.

This seems to be the first record of cleaning symbiosis between marine turtles and shrimps. During their foraging on the reef flat, the turtles regularly visited and posed at the stations. The same stations were visited by a few species of reef fishes, which posed and were cleaned by the shrimps. We suggest that cleaning symbiosis between turtles and shrimps is widespread and went unrecognised due to the superficial resemblance between a resting turtle and a posing and cleaned one. Additionally, we submit a putative origin for the cleaning symbiosis between marine turtles and cleaner shrimps following a few simple behavioural steps.
