RESUMO Nosso objetivo foi aumentar o conhecimento sobre o estabelecimento de Serrasalmus marginatus (não nativa), que foi seguido pela diminuição na abundância de Serrasalmus maculatus (nativa) na planície de inundação do alto rio Paraná. Estimamos a idade, taxa de mortalidade, comprimento e idade de primeira maturação e variações no desenvolvimento gonadal em três períodos ao longo de 26 anos para as espécies. Os parâmetros populacionais e de reprodução das espécies mostraram flutuações substanciais. A maioria das faixas etárias foi amostrada em todos os períodos, mas com diferenças consideráveis na abundância, predominando indivíduos mais velhos no segundo período e indivíduos mais jovens no terceiro período para ambas as espécies. A taxa de mortalidade diminuiu para as espécies no segundo período, mas aumentou para a espécie nativa no terceiro período. O comprimento e a idade de primeira maturação diminuíram no segundo período para as espécies, aumentando o número de indivíduos adultos. No terceiro período, o número de indivíduos imaturos aumentou para ambas as espécies. Sugerimos que as espécies passaram por condições estressantes durante a coocorrência, resultando em respostas fisiológicas que desencadearam ajustes populacionais e reprodutivos que podem ter minimizado a interação competitiva entre elas, otimizando a sobrevivência, o esforço reprodutivo e a coexistência.

ABSTRACT We aimed to improve the understanding of the establishment of Serrasalmus marginatus (non-native), which was followed by a decrease in the abundance of Serrasalmus maculatus (native) in the upper Paraná River floodplain. We estimated age, mortality rate, length and age at first maturity and variations in gonad development in three time-periods along a 26-year truncated time scale for both species. Population and reproduction parameters of both species showed substantial fluctuations among periods. Most age classes were sampled in all time-periods, but with considerable difference in abundance, with predominance of older individuals in the second time-period and younger individuals in the third time-period for both species. The mortality rates decreased for both species in the second time-period, but increased for the native in the third time-period. Length and age at first maturity decreased in the second time-period for both species, increasing the number of mature individuals on their populations. In the third time-period, the number of immature individuals increased for both species. We suggest that species experienced stressful conditions during cooccurrence and this have resulted in physiological responses in both species, reflecting in population and reproductive adjustments that may have relaxed competitive interactions between them, optimizing survival, reproductive effort and coexistence.

Resumo: Introdução: A mentoria é uma importante estratégia de ensino em cursos de graduação e no treinamento profissional, especialmente no momento em que o mundo vivencia a pandemia da Covid-19. Essa estratégia possibilita aprendizado dinâmico e coletivo, ao mesmo tempo que minimiza os impactos sociais e emocionais gerados pela pandemia, sem comprometer o isolamento físico. Relato de experiência: A experiência dos alunos da UFMG com a mentoria nos formatos presencial (realizada em 2019) e virtual (durante a pandemia de 2020) demonstrou que, apesar de a modalidade virtual ter aspectos negativos, as vantagens são superiores. O aspecto mais vantajoso elencado por todos os mentorandos foi a possibilidade de discutir temas que iam além do aprendizado da medicina, como uma forma de preparação prática para a vida profissional. Discussão: A mentoria é uma estratégia singular de grande importância na educação médica. O formato misto, composto por reuniões virtuais e presenciais, foi considerado o melhor modelo para sua aplicação. Conclusão: Acreditamos que o presente relato estimulará outras instituições a adotar disciplinas no formato de mentoria, além da utilização do recurso remoto como estratégia de ensino.

Abstract: Introduction: Mentoring is an important teaching tool in undergraduate courses and in professional training, especially at a time when the world is experiencing the Covid-19 pandemic. This strategy enables dynamic and collective learning, while minimizing the social and emotional impacts generated by the pandemic, without compromising physical isolation. Experience report: The experience of UFMG students with mentoring in the face-to-face (held in 2019) and virtual (during the 2020 pandemic) format demonstrated that, although the virtual modality has negative aspects, these are outweighed by the advantages. The most advantageous aspect listed by all the mentors was the possibility of discussing topics that went beyond the learning of medicine, as a way of practical preparation for professional life. Discussion: Mentoring is a unique strategy of great importance in medical education. The mixed format, composed of virtual and face-to-face meetings, was considered the best model for its application. Conclusion: We believe that the present report will encourage other institutions to adopt disciplines in the form of mentoring, in addition to using the remote resource as a teaching strategy.

Resumo Embora mortandades massivas de peixes tenham impacto visual extraordinário e sejam certamente uma fatalidade, estamos ainda engatinhando no entendimento e na solução desse problema. Os processos que levam aos eventos de mortes de peixes são complexos e algumas vezes efêmeros, o que explica diagnoses incorretas. Nessa revisão nós discutimos esses eventos em bacias hidrográficas neotropicais, tanto em barragens como em ambientes naturais, porém com o foco nas mortes por falta de oxigênio (anoxia) ou excesso de gases dissolvidos (supersaturação gasosa). Em particular são examinados o conhecimento disponível acerca dos processos que levam a essas condições, os limiares letais de oxigênio dissolvido (OD) e gases totais dissolvidos (GTD) para os peixes e as sequelas da doença das bolhas de gás (DBG). Uma avaliação dos principais eventos de mortandade que ocorreram no Brasil nos últimos 10 anos é também apresentada, bem como discutidas as melhores práticas para o monitoramento, prevenção e mitigação. Conclui-se, finalmente, que a proliferação de hidrelétricas deve contribuir com a expansão desses eventos e consequentemente com mais um fator de ameaça à biodiversidade. Consideramos urgente a inclusão desse tema nos processos de licenciamento de novos empreendimentos pelo órgão ambiental.

Abstract Albeit massive fish mortality has an extraordinary visual impact and is certainly a fatality, we still have rudimentary understanding on how addressing this problem in the Neotropical region. The processes that lead to fish die-off events are complex and sometimes ephemeral, which can lead to incorrect diagnosis. In this review, we discuss these events in Neotropical freshwaters, both in areas impacted by dams and natural environment, with a focus on deaths mediated by the lack of oxygen (anoxia) or the excess of dissolved gases (gas supersaturation). We examine the available knowledge about the related mechanisms, lethal thresholds for dissolved oxygen (DO) and total dissolved gases (TDG) for fish, and the sequelae of gas bubble disease (GBD). An assessment of the main mortality events in Brazil in the last 10 years is also presented, as well as the best practices for monitoring, prevention, and mitigation. Finally, it is concluded that the proliferation of hydroelectric plants in the Neotropical region might contribute to the expansion of these events and, consequently, increasing of impacts on fish conservation. We consider urgent the inclusion of this topic in the licensing processes for new hydropower projects by the environmental agencies.

Resumo Este artigo discute a finalidade e os efeitos da Lei 3824/1960, que torna obrigatória a remoção da vegetação e consequente limpeza dos terrenos sujeitos a inundação pela construção de reservatórios artificiais. A importância dessa reflexão é evitar que uma lei considerada efetiva, ainda que questionada, possa ser contrária aos objetivos para os quais foi criada. Assim, este artigo visa despertar os tomadores de decisão para a possibilidade de essa lei ser considerada inaplicável à realidade atual, de acordo com os avanços sociais, científicos, jurídicos e ambientais alcançados nos últimos anos. Como objetivo específico, com base nos resultados obtidos, pretendemos estimular as autoridades a agirem em favor da elaboração de uma lei que atenda a esses avanços.

Abstract This article discusses the purpose and effects of Law 3824/1960, which makes mandatory the removal of vegetation and consequent cleaning of land sites subject to flooding by the construction of artificial reservoirs. The importance of this reflection is to avoid having a law that is considered effective, though if questioned, may prove contrary to the objectives for which it was created. Thus, this article aims to awaken decision makers to the possibility that this law is considered inapplicable to the current reality, according to the social, scientific, legal and environmental advances achieved in recent years. As a specific objective, based on the findings obtained, we aim to stimulate authorities to act in favor of the elaboration of a law that will meet these advances.

RESUMO. As relações entre o grau de sobreposição alimentar e disponibilidade de alimentos, e as implicações para a seletividade alimentar de espécies de peixes foram avaliadas em lagoas da planície de inundação do Alto rio Paraná, Brasil. As hipóteses testadas foram: i) as espécies tornam-se menos seletivas em lagoas com alta disponibilidade de recursos alimentares; e ii) espécies (interespecífica) ou indivíduos (intraspecífica) apresentam maior sobreposição alimentar em condições de alta disponibilidade de recursos alimentares. Em geral, com os resultados observou-se que as espécies se tornam menos seletivas quando o ambiente proporciona maior disponibilidade de recursos alimentares. A sobreposição interespecífica não demostrou padrão quando avaliado a disponibilidade de recursos alimentares nas lagoas. No entanto, a sobreposição intraespecífica foi mais acentuada nas condições de elevada disponibilidade de recursos alimentares.

ABSTRACT. The relationships between the degree of dietary overlap and food availability, and implications for food selectivity of fish species were evaluated at floodplain lakes on the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil. The hypothesis tested were: i) species become less selective in lakes with high availability of food resources; and ii) species (interspecific) or individual (intraspecific) present higher food overlap in conditions of high availability of food resources. In general, with the results was observed that species become less selective when the environment provided higher availability of food resources. Interspecific overlap did not show a pattern when evaluating availability of food resources in the lakes. However, intraspecific overlap tended to be more accentuated in conditions of high availability of resource food.

ABSTRACT Fish larvae and adults are morphologically distinct from each other and have different ecological requirements. Research on the dynamics of ichthyoplankton provides valuable information about the early stages of the life cycle of fish. This study analyzed the temporal and spatial distribution of the larval stages of three migratory species - Salminus brasiliensis (Cuvier, 1816), Prochilodus lineatus (Valenciennes, 1836) and Pseudoplatystoma corruscans (Agassiz, 1829) - to identify possible spawning areas in the last lotic remnant of the upper Paraná River, in the Brazilian territory. A total of 26 points were sampled monthly from October 2003 to November 2004. The PERMANOVA detected significant differences between the months only for S. brasiliensis (Pseudo-F = 3.88, p = 0.0021) and P. corruscans (Pseudo-F = 3.35, p = 0.004). Among the environmental variables, temperature was the most important and the Mantel test detected a significant correlation between temperature and the densities, only for P. lineatus (r = 0.09, p = 0.03). The species in our data chose for spawning tributaries that are not dammed, of which most are outside conservation areas. Therefore, recruitment, maintenance and possible actions aiming to recover the stocks of these species are dependent on the conservation of tributaries and floodplain lakes in the region, in addition to monitoring to prevent fishing during the reproductive period.

As larvas de Chironomidae foram caracterizadas localmente para analisar a densidade, biomassa, índice de diversidade de Shannon-Wiener e dominância no canal principal do Rio Ivinhema, em um canal secundário, em cinco lagoas conectadas ao canal principal e cinco lagoas sem conexão. Dos 68 taxa, Aedokritus sp., Tanytarsus sp., Chironomus strenzkei Fittkau, 1968 e Procladius sp.1 foram encontrados em todos os locais de amostragem e foram consideradas as morfoespécies com a maior plasticidade ecológica. Chironomus strenzkei contribuiu com a maior biomassa na região central das lagoas sem conexão, enquanto que Aedokritus sp. dominou na região litorânea das lagoas. Os maiores valores do índice de diversidade na região litorânea dos canais foram pertinentes ao maior fluxo de água e disponibilidade de alimento nessas áreas. Os índices de dominância, em contraste, foram maiores na região central desses ambientes. A região litorânea tem características exclusivas, com habitats que apresentaram um importante papel no controle da densidade numérica e índice de diversidade no ecossistema, enquanto que a biomassa dos invertebrados bentônicos na região central em alguns biótopos pode ter diferenças espaciais de acordo com a deriva de organismos.

We characterized the local benthic Chironomidae by analyzing the numerical density, biomass, diversity index of Shannon-Wiener and dominance of larvae in the main channel of the Ivinhema River, in a secondary channel, in five lakes connected to the main channel and in five lakes without connection. Of the 68 taxa identified, Aedokritus sp., Tanytarsus sp., Chironomus strenzkei Fittkau, 1968 and Procladius sp.1 were found in all sampling sites and were considered morphospecies with greater of greatest ecological plasticity. Chironomus strenzkei Fittkau, 1968, contributed with the greatest biomass in the central region of lakes without connection, whereas Aedokritus sp. dominated in the littoral of lakes. The greater values of diversity indices in the littoral region of channels were due to the greater water flow and to the higher food availability in these areas. The dominance indices, by contrast, were greater on the central region of these environments. The littoral region has exclusive characteristics, representing habitats that could play important controlling in the numerical density and index diversity on the ecosystem, whereas that the biomass of benthic invertebrates in the central region in some biotopes would have different spatial probably according organisms drift.

Os efeitos da duração da cheia sobre algumas variáveis abióticas e atributos das assembleias de peixes (espécies tolerantes e intolerantes à hipóxia, STH e SIH, respectivamente) foram avaliados em rios e lagoas do alto rio Paraná. Os peixes foram amostrados uma vez ao ano, em seis localidades, durante o período de águas altas entre 2000 e 2003. Houve reduções generalizadas nos níveis de oxigênio dissolvido e aumentos na transparência da água em lagos em anos de cheias moderadas. A duração das cheias influenciou as espécies diferencialmente em função de sua tolerância à hipóxia: em anos de cheias moderadas, a riqueza das STH aumentou e a abundância numérica e de biomassa das SIH reduziram significativamente. Relações opostas foram detectadas entre o oxigênio dissolvido e os atributos das STH e SIH. O oxigênio dissolvido foi o melhor preditor da variabilidade de STH e SIH em anos de cheias moderadas, enquanto a transparência da água explicou uma significativa proporção das STH em anos de cheias curtas. Por serem positivamente afetadas pelas reduções no oxigênio dissolvido, as STH parecem ter vantagens em persistir em ambientes lênticos sazonalmente inóspitos. A incorporação de dados abióticos bem como da tolerância diferencial das espécies à hipóxia deve aprimorar as investigações dos efeitos das variações interanuais no pulso de inundação nas assembleias de peixes tropicais

The effects of the duration of the floods on abiotic variables and attributes of species tolerant and intolerant to hypoxia (STH and SIH respectively) were evaluated in rivers and lakes of the upper Paraná River. Fish were sampled once a year, in six sampling stations, during the high water period from 2000 to 2003. There were overall reductions in dissolved oxygen levels and increases in transparency of water in lakes in years of moderate floods. The duration of floods influenced species differentially based on their tolerance to hypoxia: in moderate floods, richness of STH increased and numerical abundance and biomass of SIH reduced significantly. Opposite relationships were detected between dissolved oxygen and the attributes of STH and SIH. Dissolved oxygen was the best predictor of variability of STH and SIH in years of moderate floods, whereas water transparency predicted significant amounts of STH in years of short floods. Being positively affected by dissolved oxygen reductions, STH seem to take advantages in persisting in seasonally harsh lentic habitats. The incorporation of abiotic data as well the differential tolerance of species to hypoxia would improve further investigations of the effects of interannual variations in the flood pulse on tropical fish assemblages

A maioria dos sistemas para transposição de peixes implantados na região Neotropical caracteriza-se por baixa eficiência e seletividade, em muitos casos com benefícios questionáveis para as populações de peixes. Estudos conduzidos no Canal da Piracema, localizado na barragem de Itaipu, rio Paraná, apontaram como principal barreira à migração ascendente o componente do sistema denominado Canal de deságue no rio Bela Vista (CABV), uma seção de escada com 200 m de extensão. Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o grau de restrição imposto pelo CABV aos movimentos ascendentes de Prochilodus lineatus e Leporinus elongatus, Characiformes. Os peixes foram marcados com Passive Integrated Transponders (PIT-tags) e soltos a jusante e a montante do CABV. Indivíduos de ambas as espécies de jusante do CABV levaram muito mais tempo para atingirem a extremidade superior do sistema (43,6 dias vs. 15,9 dias) e passaram em muito menor proporção (18% vs. 60,8%) do que os marcados a montante desse componente. Embora sejam necessários outros trabalhos para a distinção entre os efeitos do sistema de transposição de peixes e a variação natural da motivação migratória, os resultados demonstram claramente que existem problemas na passagem pelo CABV

The majority of the fish passages built in the Neotropical region are characterised by low efficiency and high selectivity; in many cases, the benefits to fish populations are uncertain. Studies conducted in the Canal da Piracema at Itaipu dam on the Parana River indicate that the system component designated as the Discharge channel in the Bela Vista River (herein named Canal de deságue no rio Bela Vista or CABV), a 200 m long technical section, was the main barrier to the upstream migration. The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of restriction imposed by the CABV on upstream movements of Prochilodus lineatus and Leporinus elongatus, Characiformes. Fish were tagged with passive integrated transponders (PIT tags) and released both downstream and upstream of this critical section. Individuals of both species released downstream of the CABV took much more time to reach the upper end of the system (43.6 days vs. 15.9 days), and passed in much lower proportions (18% vs. 60.8%) than those tagged upstream of this component. Although more work is needed to differentiate between fishway effects and natural variation in migratory motivation, the results clearly demonstrate passage problems at the CABV.

O consumo, a mortalidade natural e as estimativas de crescimento são parâmetros importantes para a construção de modelos pesqueiros e ecossistêmicos. Dessa forma, neste trabalho foram calculados os parâmetros k (constante de crescimento da equação de von Bertalanffy), Loo (comprimento assintótico), Woo (peso assintótico), Ar (índice da nadadeira caudal), M (mortalidade natural) e Q/B (consumo/biomassa) para peixes em reservatórios. Além disso, foram exploradas possíveis relações entre esses parâmetros para 135 espécies de peixes amostradas em 30 reservatórios no estado do Paraná, sul do Brasil. O comprimento máximo (Lmax) variou de 2,60 a 79,00 cm, Loo de 2,73 a 85,05 cm, Woo de 0,23 a 9.490,26 g, k de 0,01 a 2,38 ano-1, Ar de 0,03 a 3,60, M de 0,16 a 2,82 ano-1, e Q/B de 3,31 a 67,18. Correlações significativas foram observadas entre todos os pares de parâmetros, exceto para Ar e k, Ar e Loo e para M e Q/B. As estimativas aqui apresentadas podem ser úteis para a construção de modelos Ecopath, tanto em outras regiões tropicais, como no Brasil, onde os modelos ecossistêmicos estão em amplo estágio de desenvolvimento.

Consumption, natural mortality, and growth are important parameters for the construction for both fisheries and ecosystems models. We estimated k (growth constant of the von Bertalanffy's function), Loo 1(asymptotic length), Woo (asymptotic weight), Ar (caudal fin index), M (natural mortality), and Q/B (consumption/biomass ratio) for several fish species inhabiting reservoirs. We explored possible relationships among these parameters for 135 fish species sampled in thirty reservoirs in the State of Paraná, southern Brazil. Maximum length (Lmax) varied from 2.60 to 79.00 cm, Loo from 2.73 to 85.05 cm, Woo from 0.23 to 9,490.26 g, k from 0.01 to 2.38 yr-1, Ar from 0.03 to 3.60, M from 0.16 to 2.82 yr-1, and Q/B from 3.31 to 67.18. Significant correlations were observed between most pairs of parameters, except for Ar and k, Ar and Loo , and for M and Q/B. The estimates presented here may be useful for constructing Ecopath models, both in Brazil and other tropical regions, where the use of ecosystem modeling is growing.

Nesse trabalho as assembleias de peixes associadas a bancos de macrófitas flutuantes à deriva foram descritas. Além disso, foi considerado o possível papel desses bancos como vetores de dispersão no rio Ivinhema, importante tributário do alto rio Paraná, Brasil. Os peixes associados aos bancos à deriva foram amostrados no canal principal desse rio, entre os meses de Janeiro a Março de 2005, quando o vento e/ou o aumento no nível da água foram suficientes para transportar os bancos de macrófitas. Os peixes foram amostrados com uma rede flutuante (4 m de comprimento x 2 m de largura x 0,6 m de altura e 2 mm de tamanho de malha). No laboratório, larvas, jovens e adultos foram contados e identificados ao menor nível taxonômico possível. Nos quatro bancos de macrófitas flutuantes a deriva foram capturados 218 indivíduos pertencentes à pelo menos 28 espécies, 17 famílias e 6 ordens. Aphyocharax dentatus, Serrasalmus spp. e Trachelyopterus galeatus foram os táxons mais abundantes associados aos bancos de macrófitas à deriva, mas a riqueza de espécie variou entre 6 e 24 espécies por banco. Além disso, 85% do total do número de indivíduos capturados foram larvas e juvenis. Embora preliminar e baseado em amostragens limitadas, este estudo, conduzido em bancos de macrófitas flutuantes à deriva, foi o primeiro no último trecho não regulado do rio Paraná em território brasileiro, e alerta para o papel potencial que os bancos de macrófitas têm como dispersores de peixes na região.

We describe the fish assemblages associated with drifting macrophyte mats and consider their possible role as dispersal vectors in the Ivinhema River, a major tributary of the upper Paraná River, Brazil. Fish associated with drifting mats were sampled in the main river channel during January and March 2005, when the wind and/or the increased water level were sufficient to transport macrophyte stands. Fish in the drifting mats were sampled with a floating sieve (4 m long x 2 m wide x 0.6 m high, and 2 mm mesh size). In the laboratory, larvae, juvenile, and adult fish were counted and identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. In four drifting macrophyte mats we captured 218 individuals belonging to at least 28 species, 17 families, and 6 orders. Aphyocharax dentatus, Serrasalmus spp., and Trachelyopterus galeatus were the most abundant taxa associated with the mats, but species richness ranged from 6 to 24 species per mat. In addition, 85% of the total number of individuals caught was larvae and juveniles. Although preliminary and based on limited samples, this study of drifting macrophyte mats was the first one in the last unregulated stretch of the Paraná River remaining inside Brazilian territory, and alerts us to the potential role of macrophytes mats as dispersers of fish species in the region.

Com o propósito de avaliar o destino da espécie migradora dourado Salminus brasiliensis no primeiro ano de represamento do reservatório de Corumbá foi estimado a idade, crescimento, mortalidade e rendimento por recruta. As amostras foram capturadas no reservatório de Corumbá e seus principais tributários (Estado de Goiás) mensalmente de março de 1988 a fevereiro de 1999 usando-se redes de espera. Após um ano do represamento, a idade foi estimada das escamas e o número máximo de anéis foi seis para machos e cinco para fêmeas. Os anéis são formados anualmente de maio a junho. O comprimento assintótico e a taxa de crescimento para machos e fêmeas foram 37,1 cm e 0,77 e 56,6 cm e 0,52 cm, respectivamente. A dominância de juvenis foi constatada no reservatório e seus tributários. A taxa de mortalidade total instantânea (Z) foi 1,59 e a taxa de mortalidade total (A) foi 79,6%. O mais elevado rendimento por recrutamento (1200g) e peso médio (1900g) foi obtido em simulações com baixo valor de pesca (F) e mortalidade natural (M). Baseado nas informações acima foi determinado se o represamento do reservatório de Corumbá tem influenciado o crescimento do dourado. Como recomendação para este estudo, sugere-se que o esforço de pesca não seja aplicado durante o período de elevada produtividade trófica e que o monitoramento da assembleia de dourado continue. O programa de manejo para esta espécie deve ser conduzido com subsequente monitoramento envolvendo comunicação eficiente, práticas realistas e envolvimento das organizações de pesca.

In order to evaluate the fate of the migratory species dourado Salminus brasiliensis in the first years of impoundment in Corumbá Reservoir we estimated age, growth, mortality and yield per recruit. Samplings were carried out monthly in Corumbá Reservoir and its main tributaries (Goiás State) from March 1998 to February 1999 using gillnets. After one year of impoundment, age was estimated from scales and the maximum number of rings was six for males and five for females. Rings are formed annually in May and June. The asymptotic length and growth rate for males and females were 37.1 cm and 0.77 and 56.6 cm and 0.52, respectively. A dominance of juveniles was verified in the reservoir and its tributaries. The instantaneous total mortality rate (Z) was 1.59 and the annual total mortality rate (A) was 79.6%. The highest yield per recruit (1200g) and the highest average weight (1900g) were obtained in simulations with low values of fishing (F) and natural (M) mortalities. Based on the above information we describe the Corumbá Reservoir impoundment has influenced the growth of the dourado. As regards this study, we recommend that the fishing effort not be applied during the trophic upsurge period and that the monitoring of the dourado assemblage continue. Fishery programs management for this species should be carried out with subsequent monitoring involving efficient communication, realistic practices and involvement of fisher organizations.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o papel de fatores abióticos na ocorrência de larvas de peixes. As amostragens foram realizadas mensalmente em 12 estações (agrupadas em 4 áreas) nos rios Amambaí, Ivaí e Paraná e no reservatório de Itaipu, de outubro de 1994 a janeiro de 1995 (época de desova). Simultaneamente, foram obtidos dados de temperatura, pH, condutividade elétrica, oxigênio dissolvido, nível da água, velocidade da água e precipitação. Análises de Componentes Principais (PCA) e de Correspondência com Remoção do Efeito de Arco (DCA) foram aplicadas para sumarizar os dados abióticos e as densidades de larvas, respectivamente. O rio Amambaí diferiu significativamente das outras áreas em relação aos fatores abióticos. O reservatório de Itaipu diferiu significativamente das outras áreas quanto à composição de espécies, tendo o rio Ivaí também diferido do rio Paraná neste aspecto. A relação entre os eixos da PCA e DCA foi significativa, indicando que os fatores abióticos influenciam as larvas. Por exemplo, Leporinus elongatus preferiu o rio Amambaí, Hypophthalmus edentatus, Plagioscion squamosissimus e Hoplias aff. malabaricus o reservatório de Itaipu e Pimelodus maculatus, Auchenipterus osteomystax e Iheringichthys labrosus o rio Ivaí. Assim, sugerimos que cada espécie seleciona um conjunto de características abióticas em um dado ambiente utilizado como local de desova.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of abiotic factors on fish larvae occurrence. Samplings were carried out monthly at 12 stations (grouped in four areas) in the Amambaí, Ivaí and Paraná rivers and in the Itaipu Reservoir (upper Paraná River basin), from October 1994 to January 1995 (spawning season). Simultaneously, we obtained water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, water level, water velocity, and rainfall. Principal Component Analyses (PCA) and Detrended Correspondence Analyses (DCA) were applied to summarize abiotic and larvae density data, respectively. Amambaí River differed significantly from the other areas in relation to abiotic factors. Itaipu Reservoir differed significantly from the other areas considering species composition, and the Ivaí River also differed from the Paraná River. The relationship among PCA and DCA axes were significant, indicating that abiotic factors do influence larva. For example: Leporinus elongatus prefered the Amambaí River, Hypophthalmus edentatus, Plagioscion squamosissimus, and Hoplias aff. malabaricus the Itaipu Reservoir, and Pimelodus maculatus, Auchenipterus osteomystax and Iheringichthys labrosus the Ivaí River. We suggest that species selected some abiotic factors characteristic to a given environment as spawning grounds.

Esse estudo avaliou a dieta de Pimelodus sp., antes e após o represamento de Salto Caxias, no rio Iguaçu, bem como variações espaciais e ontogenéticas na dieta da espécie. As amostragens foram realizadas antes do represamento (março/97 a fevereiro/98) e no período posterior (abril/99 a janeiro/00), no corpo principal do reservatório e tributários adjacentes. A análise de conteúdos estomacais de 682 exemplares revelou que esta espécie é onívora com elevado oportunismo trófico. Após o represamento, indivíduos adultos exploraram principalmente peixes, enquanto que os juvenis consumiram especialmente plantas, larvas de Diptera e escamas em diferentes locais de coleta. A análise de variância (ANOVA trifatorial) aplicada sobre os escores da análise de correspondência com remoção do efeito do arco (DCA), mostrou uma interação significativa (F = 4.68; P = 0.04) entre as fases de represamento e o tamanho dos indivíduos (juvenis e adultos). Uma vez determinada as diferenças significantes na ordenação entre os fatores considerados, nós podemos inferir que a dieta de Pimelodus sp. foi influenciada pela formação do reservatório e isso dependeu do tamanho dos indivíduos. As análises por locais de coleta não mostraram diferenças significantes na dieta.

This study evaluated the diet of Pimelodus sp., before and after damming of Salto Caxias, (waterfall in the Iguaçu river), as well spatial and ontogenetic diet shift. Surveys were carried out from March 1997 to February 1998 (before damming) and from April 1999 to January 2000 (after damming) inside the reservoir and adjacent tributaries. Stomach contents analysis of 682 specimens revealed omnivory with high degree of trophic opportunism to this species. Analysis of variance (three way ANOVA) for scores produced from Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) yielded a significant interaction between the damming phases and size of the individuals (juveniles and adults) (F = 4.68; P = 0.04). After damming, adults exploited mainly fish, whereas the juveniles fed mostly on plants, dipterans larvae and scales at different sites. From significant differences in the ordination among the factors considered, it could be inferred that the diet of Pimelodus sp. was influenced by the formation of the reservoir and this depended on the life stage considered. Position of the sites (feeding grounds) did not lead to significant alterations in diet.

O Canal da Piracema é considerado o maior sistema de transposição para peixes no mundo, com 10 km de extensão. A sua construção foi controversa, pois viabilizou a conexão entre duas províncias ictiofaunísticas distintas. Este trabalho buscou avaliar a ictiofauna presente no Canal da Piracema, a abundância e distribuição das espécies migradoras de longa distância ao longo deste sistema de transposição (indicação de seletividade). O Canal da Piracema mostrou-se difícil de ser amostrado, devido a sua elevada heterogeneidade ambiental: lagos artificiais, escadas e canais semi-naturais, sendo utilizados diversos aparelhos de pesca, adequados aos diversos biótopos (litoral não estruturado e estruturado, amostrados com redes de arrasto e pesca elétrica; lêntico, amostrado com redes de espera e espinhel (mais profundo); e águas rápidas, amostradas com tarrafas). A ictiofauna presente seguiu o padrão para a América do Sul e rio Paraná, com amplo domínio de Characiformes e Siluriformes, sendo Characidae, Anostomidae, Pimelodidade e Loricariidae as famílias mais representativas. Ao todo foram capturadas 116 espécies sendo que 17 eram migradoras de longas distâncias. Nas regiões litorâneas estruturadas e não estruturadas do Canal da Piracema, as capturas se restringiram às espécies de pequeno porte, sendo as mais representativas Bryconamericus exodon e Apareiodon affinis.Nas áreas lênticas houve predomínio de Hypostomus spp., seguidos de Iheringichthys labrosus. Nas áreas lênticas profundas a espécie mais capturada foi Hoplias aff. malabaricus. Nas áreas de águas rápidas houve maior captura de espécies migradoras de longa distância, sendo Prochilodus lineatus e Leporinus elongatus as mais capturadas. A redução acentuada, no sentido de jusante a montante, inclusive das migradoras, indica que o Canal da Piracema está sendo seletivo. Então, a busca de informações dos vários tipos de sistemas de transposição existentes ao longo do Canal da Piracema é fundamental para permitir a movimentação ascendente de peixes. Se isto for alcançado, este polêmico mecanismo de transposição tem potencial para contribuir para a conservação dos estoques de peixes no reservatório de Itaipu e segmento a montante, devido a presença de áreas de desova e crescimento necessários para as espécies migradoras.

The Canal da Piracema is the longest (nearly 10 km) fish pass system in the world. The construction of this fish pass was somehow controversial, because it connected two distinct ichthyofaunistic provinces. This study evaluated the ichthyofauna present in the Canal da Piracema and the abundance and distribution of long-distance migratory fish species along this fish pass system (evaluated possible selectivity). The Canal da Piracema was shown to be difficult to sample because of its environmental heterogeneity: artificial ponds, ladders and nature-like fish pass. To solve this problem, we used several fishing gears, adequate for the several biotopes present (unstructured and structured littoral were sampled with seining nets and electrofishing; lentic were sampled with gillnets and longlines (deeper areas); and rapid water areas were sampled with cast nets). The ichthyofauna of the Canal da Piracema followed the pattern for South America and the Paraná River, with a predominance of Characiformes and Siluriformes. The most representative families were Characidae, Anostomidae, Pimelodidae and Loricariidae. We captured 116 species (17 were long-distance migratory) during the period studied. Small-sized species were predominant in unstructured and structured littoral areas, especially Bryconamericus exodon and Apareiodon affinis.The most abundant species was Hypostomus spp. in lentic areas, followed by Iheringichthys labrosus. Hoplias aff. malabaricus predominated in deeper lentic areas. Long-distance migratory species were abundant in rapid waters; they were Prochilodus lineatus and Leporinus elongatus. The sharp reduction in the number of species, including migratory ones, is an indication that the Canal da Piracema is selecting the species that ascend it. Therefore, the search for information on the efficiency of the various fish passes present in the Canal da Piracema is fundamental, to facilitate upward movements of fish. If this is reached, this polemic fish pass has the potential to contribute to the conservation of fish stocks in Itaipu Reservoir and upstream stretches, because of the presence of spawning and development (nurseries) areas for migratory species.
