Resumo Este artigo discute aspectos formais associados à materialidade dos regimes de figuração da cerâmica ritual de duas culturas pré-coloniais tardias da Amazônia - Santarém (1000-1600 d.C.) e as Estearias do Maranhão (775-1045 d.C.) - cujos objetos se sobressaem pela ênfase nas representações figurativas. Seu propósito é evidenciar a estrutura de ambos os estilos e finalmente refletir sobre os possíveis significados culturais da inversão observada nessas sociedades do passado em relação à arte das sociedades indígenas contemporâneas. Segundo a recente caracterização antropológica, esta última seria marcada por uma tendência geral não representativista que se destaca pela presença do grafismo abstrato, mantendo uma conexão com as cosmologias animistas e perspectivistas dominantes na região. Vistos em detalhe, os exemplos arqueológicos examinados, apesar de indicarem uma tendência oposta ou a preeminência da figuração, apontam a coexistência de ambos os regimes.

Abstract This article discusses formal aspects of the materiality of figurative ceramic art schemes in two late pre-colonial cultures of the Amazon - Santarém (A.D. 1000-1600) and the Estearias of Maranhão (A.D. 775-1045), whose material culture stands out for its emphasis on figurativism. Its purpose is to highlight the formal structure of both styles and to reflect on the cultural meanings of the tendency for reversals observed in these ancient societies when compared to the art of contemporary indigenous societies. According to recent anthropological characterization, the latter would be marked by a general non-representative trend that is noteworthy for its abstract designs, maintaining a connection with the animist and perspectivist cosmologies dominant in the region. Considered in detail, the archaeological examples investigated in this article indicate the prominence of figurativism, but suggests the coexistence of both regimes.

Resumen Este artículo aborda aspectos formales relacionados con la materialidad de los regímenes de figuración de la cerámica ritual de dos culturas precoloniales de la Amazonia - Santarém (1000-1600 d.C.) y Estearias del Maranhão (775-1045 d.C.) - cuyos objetos se destacan por el énfasis en las representaciones figurativas. Su propósito es poner de relieve la estructura de ambos estilos y finalmente reflexionar sobre el posible significado cultural de esta inversión observada en el pasado, en comparación con el arte contemporáneo de las sociedades indígenas. Según la caracterización antropológica reciente, este último estaría marcado por una tendencia general no representacional que se destaca debido a la presencia de los grafismos abstractos, manteniendo una conexión con las cosmologías perspectivistas y animistas dominantes en la región. Vistos en detalle, los ejemplos arqueológicos aunque indiquen una tendencia opuesta o la preeminencia de la figuración, sugieren la coexistencia de ambos regímenes.

O artigo discute a aplicação sistemática do método geofísico Radar de Penetração no Solo (GPR) na prospecção arqueológica intrassítio realizada no sítio do Porto (PA 00788), localizado em área urbana, no município de Santarém, Pará. O método indicou diferentes tipos de anomalia, testados por meio de escavações. Os resultados apontaram para a existência de feições antrópicas para deposição de lixo e de áreas para a produção de artefatos líticos, além de um enterramento secundário em urna cerâmica, o que permitiu ampliar o conhecimento sobre os contextos domésticos da cultura Santarém (1000-1600 A.D.).

The article discusses the systematic use of the geophysical method Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) in archaeological intra-site surveys conducted at Port site (PA 00788), located in urban area in the municipality of Santarém, State of Pará, Brazil. The method indicated different types of anomalies which have been tested by excavations. The results pointed to the existence of anthropogenic features for deposition of trash and activity areas for production of lithic artifacts, besides a secondary burial in ceramic urn, improving the knowledge on domestic contexts of the Santarém culture (1000-1600 A.D.).

Com base na análise da cultura material proveniente de unidades domésticas do núcleo urbano de Santarém (PA), ocupadas nos séculos XVIII e XIX, o presente artigo discute os processos de trocas culturais entre portugueses, luso-brasileiros, indígenas e mestiços. Embora esses grupos sociais tenham manipulado a cultura material visando expressar diferentes valores, relacionados à hierarquia, segmentação social e afirmação de identidades, a ambigüidade é uma característica das amostras analisadas, informando sobre as misturas de práticas e de referenciais culturais que levaram à construção de uma sociedade mestiça.

This article discusses the processes of cultural exchange between Portuguese, Portuguese-Brazilian, Amerindians, and mestizos based on the analysis of the material culture from households of Santarém (PA), occupied during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries,. Although these social groups manipulated material culture aiming to express different values, related to hierarchy, social segmentation, and affirmation of identities, ambiguity also characterizes these assemblages. This material ambiguity informs about the mixtures of both practices and cultural references that brought about the building of a mestizo society.

O artigo discute a ideia de existência de uma estética pré-colonial própria do território americano, tendo por base a ampla distribuição geográfica de um mesmo fundo cosmológico, cuja expressão material seria as diversas classes de objetos arqueológicos envolvidos na ação ritual. O conceito que orienta esta discussão é o perspectivismo ameríndio. Formulado originalmente para dar conta da singularidade do pensamento indígena amazônico, abordando as relações simbólicas entre os homens e outros seres, este conceito, que possui uma amplitude pan-americana, é reconhecível não só a partir das etnografias, dos mitos, mas também por meio das representações presentes na iconografia dos artefatos revelados pela Arqueologia, sobretudo aqueles que exibem corpos em estado de transformação. Vistas como parte de sistemas de pensamento e organização social, as representações artísticas contidas em objetos pré-coloniais amazônicos, andinos e da costa noroeste da América do Norte indicam uma unidade mitológica e cosmológica do mundo ameríndio, que ultrapassa distintas morfologias sociais e estruturas políticas.

The article discusses the idea of the existence of a pre-colonial aesthetics of the American territory, based on the great geographic distribution of a same cosmological substrate. Its material expression would be the different classes of archaeological objects involved in ritual. The concept that guides this discussion is the Amerindian perspectivism. Originally formulated to deal with the singularity of the Amazonian indigenous thought, working on the symbolic relationship between the humanity and other beings, this concept with a Pan-American distribution is recognized by the ethnographies, the myths, and the representations in the iconography of artifacts revealed by Archaeology, particularly those that shows bodies in the state of transformation. These artistic representations of Amazonian, Andean and the North American Northwestern Coast pre-colonial objects are considered part of the systems of thought and social organization. They make it possible to recognize a mythological and cosmological unity in Amerindian world that goes beyond social morphologies and political structures.
