Abstract Objective: To investigate the effect of Wendler glottoplasty on voice feminization, voice quality and voice-related quality of life. Methods: Prospective interventional cohort of transgender women submitted to Wendler glottoplasty. Acoustic analysis of the voice included assessment of fundamental frequency, maximum phonation time formant frequencies (F1 and F2), frequency range, jitter and shimmer. Voice quality was blindly assessed through GRBAS scale. Voice-related quality of life was measured using the Trans Woman Voice Questionnaire and the self-perceived femininity of the voice. Results: A total of 7 patients were included. The mean age was 35.4 years, and the mean postoperative follow-up time was 13.7 months. There was a mean increase of 47.9 ± 46.6 Hz (p = 0.023) in sustained/e/F0 and a mean increase of 24.6 ± 27.5 Hz (p = 0.029) in speaking F0 after glottoplasty. There was no statistical significance in the pre- and postoperative comparison of maximum phonation time, formant frequencies, frequency range, jitter, shimmer, and grade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia, and strain scale. Trans Woman Voice Questionnaire decreased following surgery from 98.3 ± 9.2 to 54.1 ± 25.0 (p = 0.007) and mean self-perceived femininity of the voice increased from 2.8 ± 1.8 to 7.7 ± 2.4 (p = 0.008). One patient (14%) presented a postoperative granuloma and there was 1 (14%) premature suture dehiscence. Conclusion: Glottoplasty is safe and effective for feminizing the voice of transgender women. There was an increase in fundamental frequency, without aggravating other acoustic parameters or voice quality. Voice-related quality of life improved after surgery.

RESUMO Objetivo descrever os principais métodos quantitativos utilizados para análise morfométrica do trato vocal em cantores, suas aplicações e os principais segmentos estudados. Estratégia de pesquisa trata-se de uma revisão integrativa guiada pela pergunta condutora: “Quais os principais métodos quantitativos utilizados para análise morfométrica do trato vocal, suas aplicações e os principais segmentos estudados em cantores?”. Foram utilizadas as bases eletrônicas PubMed, Scopus e BVS, por meio da chave de busca Vocal tract OR Oropharynx AND Morphology OR Geometry AND Evaluation OR Diagnosis AND voice, sem restrições de ano de publicação, sendo incluídos artigos em três idiomas: português, inglês e espanhol. Critérios de seleção: a seleção se deu de forma independente, por meio da leitura por pares e posterior aplicação dos critérios de exclusão e inclusão. Resultados dos 380 estudos, foram excluídos 30 duplicados. A partir da leitura dos resumos, aplicando-se os critérios de seleção, foram selecionados 18 estudos para leitura na íntegra, dos quais, 12 foram incluídos nesta revisão. A ressonância magnética foi o principal instrumento utilizado e os segmentos analisados incluíram desde o comprimento e volume do trato vocal, como segmentos isolados e suas particularidades morfológicas. Conclusão os métodos de quantificação morfológica do trato vocal integram instrumentos importantes para a avaliação instrumental do trato vocal e de seus segmentos, colaborando na atualização tecnológica em voz para melhor compreensão e intervenções fonoaudiológicas na voz cantada

ABSTRACT Purpose To describe the main quantitative methods used for morphometric analysis of the vocal tract in singers, their applications and the main segments studied. Research strategy This is an integrative review guided by the guiding question “What are the main quantitative methods used for morphometric analysis of the vocal tract, their applications and the main segments studied in singers?”. The electronic databases PubMed, Scopus and VHL were used through the search key (Vocal tract OR Oropharynx) AND (Morphology OR Geometry) AND (Evaluation OR Diagnosis) AND (voice), without restriction of years of publication, including articles in three languages: Portuguese, English and Spanish. Selection criteria The selection took place independently through reading by pairs and subsequent application of exclusion and inclusion criteria. Results Of the 380 studies, 30 duplicates were excluded. After reading the abstracts, applying the selection criteria, 18 studies were selected for full reading, of which 12 were included in this review. Magnetic resonance imaging was the main instrument used and the analyzed segments ranged from the length and volume of the vocal tract to isolated segments and their morphological particularities. Conclusion Vocal tract morphological quantification methods are important for the instrumental evaluation of the vocal tract and its segments, a technological update leading to better understanding of singers’ voice and therapeutical intervention.

RESUMO Objetivo verificar se existem diferenças nas medidas acústicas e da geometria orofaríngea entre indivíduos hígidos e pessoas com Doença de Parkinson, segundo a idade e sexo e investigar se há correlações entre as medidas geométricas orofaríngeas nessa população. Método participaram 40 indivíduos, sendo 20 com diagnóstico de Doença de Parkinson e 20 indivíduos hígidos, pareados por faixa etária, sexo e índice de massa corporal. As variáveis acústicas estudadas foram frequência fundamental, jitter, shimmer, glottal-to-noise excitation ratio, ruído e média da intensidade. As variáveis geométricas da orofaringe foram aferidas por faringometria acústica. Resultados as variáveis geométricas foram menores no grupo com Doença de Parkinson e os idosos com Doença de Parkinson apresentaram menor área da junção orofaríngea que os idosos hígidos. Com relação aos parâmetros acústicos vocais, o valor da frequência fundamental foi menor no sexo masculino, no grupo com Doença de Parkinson e os valores de jitter foram maiores no grupo não idoso dos sujeitos com Doença de Parkinson. Houve correlação positiva moderada entre o comprimento e volume da cavidade oral, comprimento da cavidade faríngea e o comprimento do trato vocal e do volume da cavidade faríngea e o volume do trato vocal. Conclusão indivíduos com Doença de Parkinson apresentaram menores valores de área glótica e área da junção orofaríngea, comparativamente aos hígidos. Quando distribuídos por faixa etária e sexo, a frequência fundamental foi menor no grupo com doença de Parkinson, na população masculina. Houve correlação positiva moderada entre as medidas de comprimento e volume da orofaringe, na amostra estudada.

ABSTRACT Purpose to verify whether there are differences in acoustic measures and oropharyngeal geometry between healthy individuals and people with Parkinson's disease, according to age and sex, and to investigate whether there are correlations between oropharyngeal geometry measures in this population. Methods 40 individuals participated, 20 with a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and 20 healthy individuals, matched by age, sex, and body mass index. Acoustic variables included fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, glottal-to-noise excitation ratio, noise, and mean intensity. Oropharyngeal geometry variables were measured with acoustic pharyngometry. Results geometry variables were smaller in the group with Parkinson's disease, and older adults with Parkinson's disease had a smaller oropharyngeal junction area than healthy older adults. Regarding acoustic parameters of voice, fundamental frequency values were lower in males with Parkinson's disease, and jitter values were higher in the non-elderly subjects with Parkinson's disease. There was a moderate positive correlation between oral cavity length and volume, pharyngeal cavity length and vocal tract length, and pharyngeal cavity volume and vocal tract volume. Conclusion individuals with Parkinson's disease had smaller glottal areas and oropharyngeal junction areas than healthy individuals. When distributed into sex and age groups, the fundamental frequency was lower in males with Parkinson's disease. There was a moderate positive correlation between oropharyngeal length and volume measures in the study sample.

RESUMO Objetivo: caracterizar a terapia vocal com abordagem respiratória em idosos disfônicos. Métodos: a busca foi realizada nas bases PubMed, BVS, Scopus, Web of Science e Embase. Foram incluídos estudos originais, nos idiomas inglês, espanhol e português, que tratassem sobre terapia vocal associada à abordagem respiratória na população idosa. Foram analisadas as variáveis gênero, faixa etária, etiologia associada, frequência e duração da sessão, dosagem de exercícios, intervenção e benefícios. Resultados: foram encontrados 1.425 artigos, porém, apenas nove foram incluídos na revisão. Na terapia vocal para idosos, destacaram-se as estratégias do Exercício de Função Vocal e o Método Lee Silverman®, além de outras, como o ParkinSong e o uso do tubo submerso em água. Tais abordagens modificam a função da musculatura laríngea, o impulso e o suporte respiratório, bem como o treino para aumento da intensidade vocal. Os principais resultados terapêuticos foram: melhora nos parâmetros perceptivo-auditivos, acústicos, aerodinâmicos, tempo máximo de fonação, nível de esforço fonatório e qualidade vocal. Conclusão: a terapia vocal com abordagem respiratória caracterizou-se pelo uso de estratégias direcionadas tanto à população idosa de forma geral, quanto a populações com disfonia neurológica, cujos resultados mostraram melhoria no controle de intensidade, frequência, ressonância e coordenação pneumofônica.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to characterize voice therapy with a respiratory approach in dysphonic older people. Methods: a search made in PubMed, VHL, Scopus, Web of Science, and EMBASE. Original studies in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, addressing voice therapy in combination with a respiratory approach in the older population, were included. The analysis encompassed sex, age, associated etiology, session frequency and duration, exercise dosage, intervention, and benefits. Results: altogether, 1,425 articles were found, of which only nine were included in the review. In voice therapy for older people, the following strategies stood out: Vocal Function Exercises, Lee Silverman Voice Treatment®, ParkinSong, and tubes immersed in water. These approaches change the laryngeal muscle function and respiratory impulse and support and increase vocal intensity. The main therapeutic findings included improved auditory-perceptual, acoustic, and aerodynamic parameters, maximum phonation time, phonatory effort level, and voice quality. Conclusion: voice therapy with a respiratory approach characteristically used strategies aimed at both the general older population and those with neurological dysphonia. Their results showed improvement in frequency, resonance, intensity control, and breathing/phonation coordination.

RESUMO Objetivo verificar as evidências disponíveis sobre o efeito dos exercícios vocais no tratamento da disfagia. Estratégia de pesquisa foi realizado levantamento bibliográfico nas bases de dados PubMed, LILACS, SciELO e MEDLINE, sem restrições quanto ao período de publicação. Critérios de seleção artigos originais, estudos de caso e/ou revisões de literatura publicados nos idiomas português e/ou inglês, disponíveis eletronicamente na íntegra e que abordassem o tratamento clínico com exercícios vocais em adultos e idosos com disfagia. Foram excluídas publicações repetidas nas bases de dados, com população de crianças, com indivíduos que não apresentassem o diagnóstico de disfagia, com exercícios vocais sem especificação, com exercícios exclusivos de deglutição, artigos e/ou resumos sem possibilidade de acesso pelas plataformas institucionais e estudos com modelo animal. Resultados foram encontrados 2.356 artigos, dos quais, após aplicados os critérios de elegibilidade, foram selecionados 8 para a amostra final. Para avaliar os efeitos dos exercícios vocais, os estudos utilizaram avaliação clínica, videofluoroscopia, videoendoscopia e eletromiografia. Quanto aos efeitos dos exercícios vocais na deglutição, observou-se que as técnicas de som plosivo, empuxo, trato vocal semiocluído, som basal, modulação vocal, sobrearticulação, o método Lee Silverman Voice Treatment® e o uso de exercícios de treino de força muscular expiratória apresentaram efeitos positivos na reabilitação da disfagia. Conclusão os estudos com treino de força muscular expiratória, o método Lee Silverman e os exercícios vocais tradicionais demonstraram efeitos positivos no tratamento da disfagia. No entanto, ainda não foi possível comprovar o nível de evidências de todos os estudos.

ABSTRACT Purpose To verify the available evidence on the effect of vocal exercises on the treatment of dysphagia. Research strategy A bibliographic survey was carried out in the PubMed, LILACS, SciELO and MEDLINE databases, with no restrictions on the publication period. Selection criteria Original articles, case studies and/or literature reviews published in Portuguese and/or English, available electronically in full and addressing clinical treatment with vocal exercises in adults and elderly with dysphagia. Publications repeated by the databases, with a population of children, individuals who did not present the diagnosis of dysphagia, with vocal exercises without specification, with exclusive swallowing exercises, articles and/or abstracts without the possibility of access by institutional platforms, and studies with animal model were excluded. Results A total of 2,356 articles were found, of which, after the eligibility criteria were applied, 08 were selected for the final sample. To evaluate the effects of vocal exercises, the studies used clinical evaluation, videofluoroscopy, videoendoscopy and electromyography. Regarding the effects of vocal exercises on swallowing, it was observed that the techniques of plosive sound, buoyancy, semi-occluded vocal tract, basal sound, vocal modulation, overarticulation, the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment method® and the use of expiratory muscle strength training exercises showed positive effects in the rehabilitation of dysphagia. Conclusion It was observed that studies with expiratory muscle strength training (EMST), Lee Silverman method (LSVT®) and traditional vocal exercises demonstrated positive effects in the treatment of dysphagia. However, it has not yet been possible to prove the level of evidence in all studies.

Abstract Introduction Minor structural alterations of the vocal fold cover are important causes of dysphonia. The variability in the type of alteration and the grade of vocal deviation affects the definition of the conduit and the results of treatment. Objective To characterize the occurrence, the selected treatments adopted and vocal quality before and after treatment in patients with minor structural alterations of the vocal folds cover. Methods This was a cross-sectional study based on the records of patients treated by an interdisciplinary team at the laryngology outpatient clinic of a public university hospital from 2010 to 2018. Data collection consisted of access to a database of information on otorhinolaryngological diagnostic hypotheses, intervention and perceptual-auditory vocal assessments before and after the treatment. Data from 102 subjects were analyzed. Association tests were applied between the perceptualauditory vocal results and the different alterations found and between these and the adopted treatments. The results of the degrees of vocal deviation before and after treatment were also compared. Results The degree of roughness was associated with the sulcus vocalis, and in this alteration the highest occurrence was mild degree of roughness. There was an improvement in the breathiness and general grade of vocal deviation after treatment. Conclusion Cysts were the most frequent structural alteration in the population studied. There was an association between the degree of general deviation and that of roughness in sulcus vocalis cases. The breathiness and the general grade of vocal deviation improved after treatment regardless of the type of treatment and alteration.

RESUMO Objetivo: verificar a ocorrência de alterações vocais por seus respectivos parâmetros perceptivo-auditivos e acústicos em crianças sem queixas de voz, segundo o sexo. Métodos: foram avaliados os registros de 36 crianças sem queixas de voz, com idade entre seis e oito anos, sendo 19 do sexo masculino. O banco de dados consistiu de gravações de vogais sustentadas, frases e fala espontânea. A análise perceptivo-auditiva foi realizada por meio do Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice e a análise acústica por meio do VoxMetria. Foram analisados: frequência fundamental, jitter, shimmer, ruído e glottal to noise excitation ratio e aplicados os testes Mann-Whitney, para as variáveis numéricas, e McNemar, para as categóricas, com nível de significância de p<0,05. Resultados: das cinco crianças com alterações vocais leves, quatro eram do sexo masculino. O desvio de ressonância mais ocorrente foi o laringofaríngeo. Não houve diferença entre os sexos, nos achados perceptivo-auditivos. A frequência fundamental do grupo com alterações foi menor em relação ao grupo sem alterações. Houve associação estatística entre as alterações na avaliação perceptivo-auditiva e nos parâmetros acústicos. Conclusão: a ocorrência de alterações vocais na população de crianças estudadas sem queixa vocal foi de 13,89% e não diferiu entre os sexos nos parâmetros perceptivo-auditivos. Das crianças que apresentaram desvios vocais, todos foram em grau leve, com rugosidade e soprosidade mais ocorrentes. A frequência fundamental e o shimmer foram os parâmetros acústicos com maior ocorrência de valores fora dos limites referenciais, em ambos os sexos.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to verify, with the auditory-perceptual and acoustic parameters, the occurrence of voice changes in children with no voice complaints, per sex. Methods: the registers of 36 children with no voice complaints, aged 6 to 8 years, of whom 19 were males, were assessed. The databank consisted of the recordings of sustained vowels, sentences, and spontaneous speech. The auditory-perceptual analysis was conducted with the Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice, and the acoustic analysis, with VoxMetria. The fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, noise, and glottal-to-noise excitation ratio were analyzed. The Mann-Whitney test was applied for numerical variables, and the McNemar test, for the categorical ones, at the p < 0.05 significance level. Results: of the 5 children with mild voice changes, 4 were males. The most frequent resonance deviation was the laryngopharyngeal one. There was no difference between the sexes in the auditory-perceptual findings. The fundamental frequency in the group with changes was lower than that in the group without changes. There was a statistical association between the changes in the auditory-perceptual assessment and the acoustic parameters. Conclusion: voice changes occurred in 13.89% of the studied sample of children with no voice complaints, without differences between the sexes in the auditory-perceptual parameters. Vocal deviations were in a mild degree in all children who had them, the most frequent ones being roughness and breathiness. The fundamental frequency and shimmer were the acoustic parameters whose values most often occurred outside the reference limits, in both genders.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze the correlation between the values of nasal aeration and geometry of the nasal cavities, before and after nasal cleansing in children with mouth breathing. Methods: 20 children aged 4 to 12 years old were chosen. The questionnaire Identification Index of Signs and Symptoms of Oral breathing was applied and nasal patency was assessed by nasal aeration, through the Altmann graded mirror, and the nasal geometry measured by acoustic rhinometry. After nasal cleansing and massage, the same aeration measurements and nasal geometry procedures were performed. Group normality was analyzed using the Shapiro-Wilk test considering the hypothesis of normal distribution whenever p>0.05. The Spearman’s test was applied to analyze the correlation between variables (p<0.05). Results: there was a strong and significant correlation between nasal aeration and the corresponding cross-sectional area of the front of the inferior turbinate (CSA2) in the left cavity before cleansing. There were no correlations between the nasal aeration and other rhinometric variables. Conclusion: there was a correlation between nasal aeration values and the anterior portion of the turbinates, before the massage and nasal cleansing technique, in mouth breathing children. There were no significant differences when the nasal aeration was correlated with other rhinometric variables.

RESUMO Objetivo: avaliar a qualidade de vida em voz pediátrica autorreferida em escolares, sem queixas vocais e correlacioná-la aos parâmetros acústicos vocais. Métodos: a população desta pesquisa foi constituída por 31 crianças, com média de idade de 6,5 (±0,17) anos. Para verificar a percepção das crianças sobre a qualidade de vida em voz, foi aplicado o protocolo Qualidade de Vida em Voz Pediátrico composto por dez questões fechadas e três domínios. Os parâmetros acústicos avaliados foram frequência fundamental, jitter, shimmer, glottal-to-noise excitation ratio e índice de ruído, além do diagrama de desvio fonatório, a partir da análise da emissão da vogal /ɛ/ sustentada por cinco segundos. Resultados: os três domínios do protocolo Qualidade de Vida em Voz Pediátrico apresentaram escores próximos a 100% para todas as crianças. Quanto aos parâmetros acústicos, a maioria apresentou valores fora da normalidade, no diagrama de desvio fonatório e nos valores de shimmer. Observou-se diferença entre as meninas e os meninos apenas na frequência fundamental. Conclusão: a qualidade de vida em voz pediátrica autorreferida, nas crianças estudadas, apresentou impacto positivo, a despeito das alterações acústicas vocais encontradas. Não houve correlação entre a qualidade de vida em voz pediátrica e os parâmetros acústicos vocais, no grupo estudado.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to assess the self-reported voice-related quality of life of schoolchildren without voice complaints and correlate it to acoustic parameters of voice. Methods: the research population comprised 31 children, mean age 6.5 (±0.17) years. The children’s perception of their voice-related quality of life was verified with the Pediatric Voice-Related Quality of Life Survey, which has 10 closed-ended questions and three domains. The acoustic parameters assessed were fundamental frequency, jitter, shimmer, glottal-to-noise excitation ratio, and noise rate, besides the phonatory deviation diagram, based on the analysis of the emission of the sustained vowel /ɛ/ for 5 seconds. Results: all the children obtained scores close to 100% in the three domains of the Pediatric Voice-Related Quality of Life Survey. As for the acoustic parameters, most of them presented abnormal values in the phonatory deviation diagram and in shimmer. There was a difference between girls and boys only in fundamental frequency. Conclusion: the pediatric self-reported voice-related quality of life of the children studied had a positive impact, despite the acoustic changes found in the voices. There was no correlation between the pediatric voice-related quality of life and the acoustic parameters in voice in the group studied.

RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi relatar as principais alterações fonoaudiológicas encontradas em um caso de uma paciente com diagnóstico de CADASIL, atendida na clínica-escola de Fonoaudiologia de uma Instituição de Ensino Superior, no período de 2008 a 2013. Foi realizada a avaliação clínica verificando alterações quanto aos órgãos fonoarticulatórios, mobilidade e tônus de lábios, língua e bochechas reduzidos, com maiores repercussões na deglutição nos dois últimos anos de atendimento. Na avaliação evidenciaram-se deglutições múltiplas na consistência pastosa e presença de tosse na consistência líquida, com qualidade vocal “molhada” e ausculta cervical sem alterações, após várias deglutições. Já a voz, apresentou qualidade vocal rouco-soprosa, astenia, loudness fraca, ressonância hipernasal e articulação imprecisa. A conduta fonoaudiológica objetivou manter a alimentação e a comunicação oral, contribuindo para melhor qualidade de vida.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to report the main speech-language disorders in a patient with CADASIL diagnosis, attending the Speech Therapy School Clinic of a Higher Education Institution from 2008 to 2013. Clinical evaluation of the speech organs was carried out, verifying reduced mobility and tonus of lips, tongue and cheeks, with major repercussions on deglutition in the last two years of care. Multiple swallowing were observed for pasty consistency, and coughing, for the liquid one, with "wet" vocal quality and cervical auscultation without alterations, after multiple swallowing. A hoarse vocal quality with asthenia, weak loudness, hypernasal resonance and imprecise articulation were observed regarding the patient’s voice. The speech therapy aimed at maintaining food intake and communication, improving the patient’s quality of life.

RESUMO Objetivo: descrever a percepção de professores universitários em relação ao uso da voz na sua atividade laboral. Métodos: participaram 247 professores do nível superior, que responderam a um questionário contendo perguntas sobre as queixas vocais, sendo consideradas pelo menos três queixas como indicativo de distúrbio na voz. Após a identificação dos professores com possível distúrbio vocal, foi realizada entrevista aberta com cinco professores com objetivo de conhecer as percepções em relação ao uso da voz no ambiente de trabalho. O estudo foi aprovado pelo comitê de ética em pesquisa da instituição de origem. Os dados foram analisados quantitativamente e qualitativamente. Resultados: a faixa etária em que mais se encontra os problemas vocais é entre os 20 a 30 anos. Os docentes com contrato mais recentes, de até 5 anos, com carga horária de 40 horas semanais foram os que mais referiram queixas vocais. Os professores apresentaram boa percepção vocal e mostraram ter conhecimento a respeito da voz. Conclusão: mesmo havendo prevalência de queixas vocais, os professores mostraram ter conhecimento sobre os cuidados com a voz.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to describe the perception of university professors regarding their use of voice at work. Methods: a total of 247 higher education professors participated in this study. They answered a questionnaire on voice complaints, in which three complaints or more were considered indicative of a voice disorder. After the professors with a potential voice disorder were identified, a conversational interview was conducted with five professors to learn more on their perceptions on the use of voice at work. The study was approved by the research ethics committee of the institution of origin. The data were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. Results: the age group 20 to 30 years old was the one that most presented voice problems. The most recently hired professors (up to five years of work), with a 40-hour weekly workload, were those who most reported voice complaints. The professors had a good perception of their voice and demonstrated good knowledge about it. Conclusion: although voice complaints were prevalent, the professors proved to be aware of how to take care of their voices.

Abstract Introduction Vocal fold polyps are one of themost frequent benign laryngeal lesions, impacting the quality of life of those affected by them, primarily the vocal production. Despite being a well-established therapy in conjunction with surgery, speech therapy alone may also be effective in treating these lesions. As such, otolaryngologists and speech therapists need updated bibliographic knowledge on the issue. Objective To describe the literature findings on vocal fold polyps that discuss prevalence, etiology, histology, physiopathology, vocal characteristics or treatment. Data Synthesis The present study is a review article based on a bibliographic search using platforms, databases and search engines, with no restrictions on means of publication, methodological quality or language. All the articles on vocal fold polyps pertaining to the object of study published in the past 15 years were included. Among the characteristics investigated, the most discussed were prevalence of men, smoking as an etiological cofactor, the possibility of histological differentiation from vocal nodules, the relationship with cover minor structural alterations, and the indication and effectiveness of different treatment options. Conclusion Despite the discrepancies found in the present literature review on vocal fold polyps, there has been a notable scientific progress in the otolaryngologic techniques and in the effectiveness of speech therapy as initial treatment, with direct and indirect techniques, corroborating the need for scientific investigation of the issue.

RESUMO Objetivo: comparar a geometria nasal entre dois grupos de pacientes com diferentes graus de apneia obstrutiva do sono e correlacionar índice e gravidade da apneia e grau de sonolência diurna com áreas e volume nasais. Métodos: 20 adultos (15 mulheres e 5 homens - idade média de 52,0±11,4 anos) sem obstrução nasal, submetidos à polissonografia e divididos em dois grupos: a) dez indivíduos sem ou com apneia em grau leve; b) dez com apneia moderada ou grave. A geometria nasal foi avaliada por rinometria acústica. Foram considerados o volume (distância da válvula nasal até a parte posterior da concha nasal média) e as três áreas seccionais: válvula nasal, parte anterior e parte posterior da concha nasal inferior. Foram aplicados os testes de Mann-Whitney e t de Student para amostras independentes e coeficiente de correlação de Spearman, com nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: o grupo 2 apresentou valores menores na área da válvula nasal, à direita, e maiores valores nas áreas das conchas nasais. Não houve correlação entre escala de sonolência e geometria nasal. Conclusão: a área da válvula nasal foi menor, unilateralmente, no grupo com apneia moderada e grave. Não houve correlação entre volumes e áreas nasais e sonolência diurna excessiva.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to compare nasal geometry between two groups of patients with different degrees of obstructive sleep apnea and to correlate apnea-hypopnea index, apnea severity and degree of daytime sleepiness with nasal areas and volume. Methods: a total of 20 adults (15 women and 5 men, mean age of 52.0±11.4 years old) without nasal obstruction were submitted to polysomnography. The subjects were divided into two groups: a) 10 individuals without apnea or with mild-grade apnea; b) 10 with moderate or severe apnea. Nasal geometry was evaluated by acoustic rhinometry. The volume, comprising the distance from the nasal valve to the posterior part of the middle nasal turbinate, and the three sectional areas corresponding to nasal valve, anterior part of the inferior nasal turbinate and posterior part of the inferior nasal turbinate, were considered. The Shapiro-Wilk, Mann-Whitney, Student’s t tests for independent samples and Spearman’s correlation coefficient were used for the analysis, with a significance level lower than 5%. Results: group 2 presented lower values in the area corresponding to the nasal valve (on the right), and higher values in the nasal turbinate areas. There was no correlation between the drowsiness scale and nasal areas and volumes. Conclusion: the area of the nasal valve was unilaterally smaller in the group with moderate and severe apnea. There was no correlation between volumes and nasal areas and excessive daytime sleepiness.

RESUMO Objetivo: caracterizar e comparar o perfil de extensão vocal de idosas com e sem sintomas de voz. Métodos: participaram do estudo 23 idosas, pertencentes a uma entidade pública de atendimento ao idoso, divididas em grupos com e sem sintomas de voz, segundo resultados da Escala de Sintomas Vocais (ESV). Todas foram submetidas à análise do Perfil de Extensão Vocal, por meio do software Vocalgrama. Foram aplicados os testes estatísticos pertinentes adotando-se o nível de significância menor que 0,05. Resultados: os valores do Perfil de Extensão vocal foram 3,74% (±1,56) e 3,62% (±1,95) no grupo com e sem sintomas, respectivamente, e não houve diferenças nos diversos parâmetros do perfil de extensão vocal entre os grupos. Conclusão: nas idosas estudadas, o perfil de extensão vocal mostrou-se reduzido, independentemente de apresentarem ou não sintomas vocais. Chama-se a atenção para a importância de se investir nas possibilidades de treinamento vocal junto ao idoso com ênfase na flexibilidade vocal, visando ao aumento da extensão vocal nessa população.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to characterize and compare the vocal range profile in elderly women with and without voice symptoms. Methods: a total of 23 elderly women attending an elderly care public service participated in the study. They were divided into groups - with and without voice symptoms, according to the results of the Voice Symptom Scale (VoiSS). All participants were submitted to a vocal range profile analysis, by means of the Vocalgrama software. Appropriate statistical tests were applied, by adopting a significance level lower than 0.05. Results: the values for vocal range profile were 3.74% (±1.56) and 3.62% (±1.95) in the groups with and without symptoms, respectively. There were no differences between the groups in the various parameters of the vocal range profile. Conclusion: in the elderly women studied, the vocal range profile showed to be reduced, regardless of having or not voice symptoms. The importance of the elderly investing in the possibilities of vocal training is highlighted, with emphasis on vocal flexibility, aiming at increasing vocal range in this population.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar fatores associados às alterações fonoaudiológicas em vítimas de acidentes motociclísticos. Método Trata-se de um estudo de corte transversal. Foram estudadas vítimas de acidentes motociclísticos assistidas no Hospital da Restauração entre junho e julho de 2014. Os dados foram coletados através da consulta dos prontuários e entrevistas direta com esses acidentados, no momento da internação e após a alta hospitalar. Para análise, foram estudadas as frequências simples, média e teste Quiquadrado de Pearson ou o teste Exato de Fisher. A margem de erro utilizada nas decisões dos testes estatísticos foi de 5% e os intervalos de confiança foram obtidos com confiabilidade de 95%. Resultados Foram estudados 99 indivíduos, sendo 90,9% do gênero masculino, com idade média de 32,7 anos. Constatou-se um alto percentual de condutores alcoolizados (42,3%) e não habilitados (51,5%). Os traumatismos cranianos estavam presentes em 30,3% dos casos. As áreas corporais mais afetadas foram os membros inferiores (71,7%), seguidos da região da cabeça e face (56,6%). Depois da alta hospitalar, 30,3% referiram queixa de alterações fonoaudiológicas e essas mostraram uma associação estatisticamente significativa com não habilitados (p=0,012) e colisões entre motos (p=0,004). Conclusão Verificou-se alto percentual de lesões em região de cabeça e face decorrentes dos acidentes, associadas principalmente à não habilitação para conduzir moto e colisões entre motocicletas, sugerindo que tais fatores podem agravar as lesões fonoaudiológicas.

ABSTRACT Purpose To investigate factors associated with speech-language disorders in victims of motorcycle accidents. Methods This is a cross-sectional study. Victims of motorcycle accidents studied were treated at Hospital da Restauração between June and July 2014. The data were collected by consulting the records and direct interviews with these, at admission and after discharge. For analysis were raised single frequencies, average and chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. The margin of error used in the statistical tests was 5%, and the intervals were obtained with 95% reliability. Results 99 individuals were studied, 90.9% male, the mean age of 32.7 years. It found a high percentage of 42.3% of drunk drivers and 51.5% were not enabled. The Head Injuries were present in 30.3% of cases. The most affected body area were the lower limbs (71.7%), followed by the head and face region (56.6%). It was also found that 30.3% had complaints of speech pathology after hospital discharge and a statistically significant association between speech therapy complaint and not enabled (p=0.012) and collisions between bikes (p=0.004). Conclusion There was a high percentage of lesions in the head and face resulting from accidents, associated mainly not eligible to drive bike and collisions between motorcycles, suggesting that these factors can aggravate injuries speech therapy
