ABSTRACT The use of substances that can mitigate the harmful effects of salt stress is a promising alternative for the use of saline water, especially in semi-arid regions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide in mitigating salt stress in the mini watermelon grown in a hydroponic system. The study was carried out in a greenhouse, in an area belonging to the Federal University of Campina Grande, Pombal, Paraíba. The experimental design was completely randomised using a split-plot factorial scheme with four levels of electrical conductivity for the nutrient solution-ECns (2.1, 3.1, 4.1, and 5.1 dS m-1) considered the plots, and four concentrations of hydrogen peroxide-H2O2 (0, 20, 40, and 60 μM) the subplots, with five replications. The foliar application of hydrogen peroxide in concentrations of between 17 and 20 µM mitigated the effects of salt stress on stomatal conductance, the rate of CO2 assimilation, carboxylation efficiency, and carotenoid content in the mini watermelon up to an ECns of 5.1 dS m-1. Foliar application of hydrogen peroxide in concentrations greater than 20 µM intensified the effects of salt stress on gas exchange and the synthesis of photosynthetic pigments in the mini watermelon. RESUMO: A salinidade tem afetado negativamente o cultivo de hortaliças, sobretudo em regiões semiáridas. Neste sentido, o uso de elicitores que atuem na indução de tolerância ao estresse salino, como ácido salicílico, tem se destacado como uma alternativa promissora. Objetivou-se com esse estudo, avaliar os efeitos da pulverização foliar do ácido salicílico na mitigação do estresse salino na morfofisiologia e produção do pimentão cv. All Big. O estudo foi conduzido em casa de vegetação em Campina Grande - PB, utilizando-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em arranjo fatorial 4 x 4, sendo quatro níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação (0,8; 1,6; 2,4; e 3,2 dS m-1) e quatro concentrações de ácido salicílico (0; 1,2; 2,4 e 3,6 mM), com três repetições. ABSTRACT: Salinity has limited conventional vegetable cultivation, especially in semi-arid regions. In this regard, the use of elicitors that act to induce tolerance to salt stress, such as salicylic acid, has emerged as a promising alternative. This study evaluated the effects of foliar spraying with salicylic acid on the mitigation of salt stress on the morphophysiology and production of bell pepper cv. All Big. The study was conducted in a greenhouse in Campina Grande - PB, Brazil, adopting a completely randomized design, in a 4 x 4 factorial arrangement, corresponding to four levels of electrical conductivity of irrigation water (0.8; 1.6; 2.4; and 3.2 dS m-1) and four concentrations of salicylic acid (0; 1.2; 2.4 and 3.6 mM), with three replicates. The foliar application of salicylic acid at a concentration of 1.6 mM attenuated the effects of salt stress in gas exchange, growth, mean fruit weight, and total production per plant, and decreased the percentage of intercellular electrolyte leakage of sweet pepper cv. All Big plants, at 80 days after sowing.

ABSTRACT: The knowledge of water consumption and the efficiency of water use by crops is extremely important in the elaboration of agronomic and hydraulic projects of hydroponic systems. Thus, the present study determined the water consumption and water use efficiency of ‘Biquinho’ pepper cultivated in the hydroponic system using seven levels of electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution (ECsol) of 2.70, 3.64, 4.58, 5.28, 6.09, 6.90, and 7.77 dS m-1 and six replicates in randomized blocks. The hydroponic system used was the Nutrient Film Technique (NFT). The water consumption per plant was determined at an interval of ten days in the crop cycle (120 days after transplanting). The maximum mean daily water consumption was equal to 5.88 L plant-1 during the period 111-120 DAT, for ECsol of 4.58 dS m-1. The maximum water consumption for the crop cycle (120 DAT) was 275.66 L per plant for an estimated ECsol = 4.11 dS m-1. The highest water use efficiency (WUE), based on the total production of fruit fresh mass (ripe and unripe fruits) of ‘Biquinho’ pepper was 10.84 kg m-3 up to an estimated ECsol of 5.18 dS m-1, with an exponential reduction thereafter. The salinity of the nutrient solution, biomass production, and evapotranspiration are factors that influence the most water consumption of ‘Biquinho’ pepper. RESUMO: O conhecimento do consumo hídrico e eficiência do uso da água pelas culturas são extremamente importantes para o dimensionamento de sistemas agronômicos e projeto hidráulico dos sistemas hidropônicos. Neste contexto, o presente estudo determinou o consumo de água e a eficiência do uso da água da pimenta ‘Biquinho’ cultivada no sistema hidropônico utilizando sete níveis de condutividade elétrica da solução nutritiva (CEsol) de 2,70, 3,64, 4,58, 5,28, 6,09, 6,90 e 7,77 dS m-1 e seis repetições em blocos casualizados. O sistema hidropônico utilizado foi a técnica do fluxo laminar de nutrientes. O consumo hídrico por planta foi determinado em um intervalo de dez dias no ciclo da cultura (120 dias após o transplantio). O consumo hídrico médio diário máximo foi igual a 5,88 L planta-1 no período de 111-120 DAT, para a CEsol de 4,58 dS m-1. O consumo máximo de água para o ciclo da cultura (120 DAT) foi de 275,66 L por planta para uma estimada CEsol = 4,11 dS m-1. A maior eficiência do uso da água (EUA) observada foi de 10,84 kg m-3 (frutos maduros e não maduros) até ao CEsol estimada de 5,18 dS m-1, com posterior redução exponencial. ABSTRACT: Water scarcity associated with irregular rainfall in the semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil stands out as a limiting factor for agricultural production. Thus, the use of waters with high concentration of salts is an alternative to expand irrigated agriculture in this region. In this context, this study evaluated the water status, intercellular electrolyte leakage, photosynthetic pigments, and gas exchange of ‘BRS SC1’ sour passion fruit as a function of irrigation with water of different levels of salinity and potassium doses. RESUMO: A escassez de água associada à irregularidade das precipitações no semiárido do Nordeste brasileiro destaca-se como fator limitante para produção agrícola. Assim, o uso de águas com elevadas concentrações de sais é uma alternativa para expandir a agricultura irrigada nesta região. Neste contexto, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar os status hídrico, o extravasamento de eletrólitos, os pigmentos fotossintéticos e as trocas gasosas do maracujazeiro-azedo ‘BRS SC1’ em função da irrigação com águas de diferentes salinidades e doses de potássio. O experimento foi desenvolvido em vasos adaptados como lisímetros de drenagem sob condições de campo na Fazenda Experimental da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande em São Domingos - PB. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 5 × 4, cujos tratamentos foram construídos pela combinação de dois fatores: cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa (0,3; 1,1; 1,9; 2,7 e 3,5 dS m-1), associados a quatro doses de potássio (60; 80; 100 e 120% da recomendação), com três repetições. RESUMO Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho, avaliar, por meio da análise multivariada de dados, o efeito da aplicação exógena de peróxido de hidrogênio sobre os pigmentos fotossintéticos, as trocas gasosas e o crescimento de mudas de gravioleira sob estresse salino. O estudo foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, na Universidade Federal de Campina Grande - Paraíba. A pesquisa foi conduzida durante o período de maio a outubro de 2018. Os tratamentos foram distribuídos em delineamento de blocos casualizados, em arranjo fatorial 5 × 5, sendo cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água de irrigação - CEa (0,6 - testemunha, 1,2, 1,8, 2,4 e 3,0 dS m-1) e cinco concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio - H2O2 (0, 10, 20, 30 e 40 µM), com duas plantas por parcela e quatro repetições. A salinidade da água de irrigação a partir de 1.2 dS m-1 afetou negativamente a biossíntese de pigmentos fotossintéticos, as trocas gasosas e o crescimento da gravioleira. ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate, through multivariate data analysis, the effect of exogenous application of hydrogen peroxide on the photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange and growth of soursop seedlings under salt stress. The study was conducted in a greenhouse, at Federal University of Campina Grande - Paraíba. The assay was carried out from May to October 2018. The treatments were distributed in a randomized block design, in a 5 × 5 factorial arrangement, corresponding to five levels of irrigation water electrical conductivity - ECw (0.6-control, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4, and 3.0 dS m-1) and five concentrations of hydrogen peroxide - H2O2 (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 μM), with two plants per plot and four replicates. RESUMO O conhecimento do efeito de condicionadores químicos na redução dos efeitos deletérios provocados pela salinidade nas culturas é de grande importância para a expansão do cultivos tais como abobrinha na região semiárida do Nordeste. Nesse contexto, no presente estudo objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da aplicação foliar de peróxido de hidrogênio como atenuador do estresse salino sob as trocas gasosas, a produção e a qualidade pós-colheita de frutos de abobrinha italiana cultivada em sistema hidropônico. O trabalho foi desenvolvido em sistema hidropônico tipo Técnica de Fluxo de Nutrientes em casa de vegetação, em Pombal — PB. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 4 × 4, sendo quatro níveis de condutividade elétrica da solução nutritiva - CEsn (2,1 (controle); 3,6; 5,1 e 6,6 dS m−1), e quatro concentrações de peróxido de hidrogênio — H2O2 (0; 20; 40 e 60 μM), com três repetições. A solução nutritiva com condutividade elétrica acima de 2,1 dS m−1 promoveu redução nas trocas gasosas e no número total de frutos de abobrinha italiana. A elevação dos níveis salinos da solução nutritiva aumentou o teor de sólidos solúveis totais dos frutos e a fluorescência inicial de abobrinha italiana. Em condições de salinidade da solução nutritiva acima de 2,1 dS m−1, o peróxido de hidrogênio não conseguiu atenuar os efeitos do estresse salino. A aplicação de 20 μM de H2O2 quando as plantas foram cultivadas em solução nutritiva de 2,1 dS m−1 promoveu maior peso total dos frutos e diâmetro basal dos frutos.

ABSTRACT Knowledge about the effect of chemical conditioners on the reduction of the deleterious effects caused by salinity on crops is of great importance for the expansion of the cultivation of vegetable crops such as zucchini in the semi-arid region of the Northeast. In this context, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the foliar application of hydrogen peroxide as a mitigator of salt stress on the gas exchange, production, and postharvest fruit quality of zucchini cultivated in a hydroponic system. The study was conducted in NFT-type (Nutrient Film Technique) hydroponic system in a greenhouse, in Pombal — PB, Brazil. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 4 × 4 factorial scheme, corresponding to four levels of electrical conductivity of the nutrient solution - ECns (2.1 (control); 3.6; 5.1 and 6.6 dS m−1), and four concentrations of hydrogen peroxide - H2O2 (0; 20; 40 and 60 μM), with three replicates. Nutrient solution with electrical conductivity above 2.1 dS m−1 caused a reduction in gas exchange and the total number of fruits of zucchini. An increase in nutrient solution salinity levels increased the total soluble solids content of the fruits and the initial fluorescence of zucchini. Under conditions of nutrient solution salinity above 2.1 dS m−1, hydrogen peroxide could not mitigate the effects of salt stress. Application of 20 μM of H2O2 when the plants were grown in a nutrient solution of 2.1 dS m−1 promoted higher total fruit weight and basal diameter of the fruits.

RESUMO A berinjela é uma hortaliça considerada moderadamente sensível à salinidade e sua produção é afetada pelo déficit hídrico no solo, principalmente na fase reprodutiva da cultura. Objetivou-se avaliar a influência do uso da irrigação com água salobra utilizando o gotejamento contínuo e pulsos na produção, consumo hídrico e eficiência do uso da água da berinjela e na salinização do solo. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, arranjado em esquema fatorial 4 × 4, com cinco repetições, totalizando 80 parcelas. Os tratamentos foram compostos pela combinação de quatro formas de aplicação de água: gotejamento contínuo e pulsos durante todo o ciclo; gotejamento contínuo na fase vegetativa e por pulsos na fase reprodutiva e pulsos na fase vegetativa e gotejamento na reprodutiva; e quatro níveis de salinidade de água de irrigação - CEa (0,3; 1,5; 3,0; 4,5 dS m−1). A inversão das formas de irrigação ocorreu aos 65 dias após o transplantio. Com o aumento da salinidade da água de 0,3 a 4,5 dS m−1, a produção total (-11,96%), comprimento do fruto (-5,05%) e eficiência do uso da água (-7,01%) reduziram enquanto, não se verificou efeito significativo para a forma de aplicação de água e interação entre os fatores estudados. A irrigação por pulsos proporcionou maior economia de água, e resultou em maior condutividade elétrica do extrato de saturação do solo. O gotejamento contínuo ou por pulsos durante todo o ciclo não apresentaram diferenças estatísticas quanto a eficiência do uso de água, mas a irrigação por pulsos é a mais indicada por proporcionar economia de água.

ABSTRACT Eggplant is a vegetable considered as moderately sensitive to salinity, and its production is affected by water deficit in the soil, mainly in the reproductive phase of the crop. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of irrigation with brackish water using continuous drip and pulse in production, water consumption, water use efficiency, and soil salinization. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, in a 4 × 4 factorial scheme, with five replicates, totaling 80 plots. The treatments consisted of four forms of water application, continuous drip, and pulse throughout the cycle; continuous drip in the vegetative phase and pulse in the reproductive phase, and pulse in the vegetative phase and drip in the reproductive phase and four levels of irrigation water salinity - ECw (0.3; 1.5; 3.0; 4.5 dS m−1). The inversion of irrigation treatments occurred 65 days after transplanting. Increase in water salinity from 0.3 to 4.5 dS m−1, the total production (-11.96%), fruit length (-5.05%), and water use efficiency (-7.01%) reduced while there was no significant effect for the forms of water application and interaction between the studied factors. Pulse irrigation provided greater water savings and resulted in higher electrical conductivity in the soil saturation extract. The efficiency of water use did not show statistical difference when continuous drip or pulse irrigation was used throughout the cycle.

ABSTRACT An experiment was carried out in a randomized blocks design, aiming at evaluation of the cultivation of coriander intercropped with rocket subjected to saline and thermal stresses in the root-zone. Six treatments were evaluated, as follows: four treatments consisted of the combinations of two levels of electrical conductivity of water (ECw 0.3 and 6.5 dS m-1) with two root-zone temperatures - RZT (ambient: < 25 °C and constant at 30 °C). The respective waters were used to prepare the nutrient solution and to replenish the water consumed. In the other two treatments the cultivation was performed at ambient RZT, one with 0.3 dS m-1 level used to prepare the solution and 6.5 dS m-1 level to replenish the consumption, and other with 6.5 dS m-1 level used to prepare the solution and 0.3 dS m-1 level to replenish the water consumed. Plant height, stem diameter, water content in shoot, fresh and dry matter of shoot, and tolerance index of saline and thermal stresses were evaluated. The coriander was more tolerant to combined stresses than the rocket. For the isolated stresses, there was a greater reduction in the production of both crops as a function of salinity than by thermal stress.

RESUMO Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar o efeito das combinações de doses de nitrogênio, fosforo e potássio nos componentes de produção da pinheira irrigadas com águas salinas. O experimento foi desenvolvido em casa de vegetação, utilizando-se de um Neossolo Regolítico (Entisol) de textura franco- argilosa em Campina Grande-PB. Os tratamentos foram distribuídos em delineamento experimental em blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 2 × 8, com três repetições, sendo dois níveis de condutividade elétrica da água - CEa (0,8 e 3,0 dS m-1) e oito combinações de adubação com nitrogênio, fósforo e potássio (100-100-100; 100- 100-125; 100-125-100; 100-125-125; 125-100-100; 125-100-125; 125-125-100 e 125-125-125% da recomendação, referente ao terceiro ano de cultivo). A combinação de 100-100-100% correspondeu a 100, 60 e 60 g de N, P2O5, K2O por planta anual, respectivamente. As altas concentrações de sais na água de irrigação diminuiu o número de frutos, a massa fresca de frutos, número total e a massa de sementes da pinheira. As plantas de pinha alcançaram o melhor desenvolvimento quando cultivadas nas combinações 125-100-100; 125- 125-125 e 100-100-100% de N-P-K recomendação. A irrigação com CEa de 3,0 dS m-1 associada com a combinação de adubação 100-125-125% aumentou a massa média e altura dos frutos de pinheira.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of combinations of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium doses on the production components of custard-apple irrigated with saline waters. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using a Neossolo Regolítico (Entisol) of clay loam texture in Campina Grande-PB, Brazil. The treatments were distributed in a randomized block design, in a 2 × 8 factorial scheme, with three replicates, corresponding to two levels of electrical conductivity of water - ECw (0.8 and 3.0 dS m-1) and eight combinations of fertilization with nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (100-100-100; 100-100-125; 100-125-100; 100-125-125; 125-100-100; 125-100-125; 125-125-100 and 125-125-125% of the recommendation, for the third year of cultivation). The combination of 100-100-100% corresponded to 100, 60 and 60 g of N, P2O5, K2O per plant per year, respectively. High concentrations of salts in the irrigation water reduced the number of fruits, fresh fruit mass, total number of seeds and mass of seeds of custard-apple. Plants achieved the best development when grown under 125-100-100, 125-125-125 and 100-100-100% combinations of N-P-K recommendation. Irrigation with ECw of 3.0 dS m-1 associated with the 100-125-125% combination of fertilization increased the average mass and height of the custard-apple fruits.

RESUMO A alta concentração de sais nas fontes hídricas do semiárido do Nordeste brasileiro se destaca como um dos fatores limitantes para a expansão da fruticultura irrigada. Assim, é de suma importância a busca por estratégia capaz de amenizar o efeito do estresse salino sobre as plantas. Neste contexto, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar as trocas gasosas e a produtividade do maracujazeiro amarelo cultivado sob diferentes estratégias de irrigação com água salobra e adubação potássica em dois ciclos de produção. O experimento foi conduzido em condições de campo, utilizando o delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 6 × 2, correspondendo a seis estratégias de irrigação com água salobra aplicadas nos diferentes estádios fenológicos da cultura: SE - sem estresse, irrigação com água de baixa salinidade ao longo do ciclo da cultura; irrigação com água de alta salinidade apenas na fase vegetativa - VE; fase de floração - FL; fase de frutificação - FR; e sucessivamente nas fases vegetativa e floração - VE / FL; e fases vegetativa e frutificação - VE/FR, e duas doses de potássio (60 e 100% da recomendação), com quatro repetições e três plantas por parcela. Foi utilizada água de irrigação com alta (4,0 dS m-1) ou baixa (1,3 dS m-1) condutividade elétrica. A dose de potássio de 100% da recomendação correspondeu a 345 g de K2O por planta ao ano. O maracujazeiro amarelo ‘BRS GA1’ é sensível ao estresse salino aplicado sucessivamente nas fases vegetativa e floração e vegetativa e frutificação, apresentando reduções na concentração intercelular de CO2, taxa de assimilação de CO2, eficiência instantânea do uso da água, número de frutos, e produção por planta. A irrigação com água de 4,0 dS m-1 na fase de frutificação é uma estratégia promissora, pois não compromete a produção. A dose de potássio equivalente a 60% foi melhor que 100% da recomendação em termos de trocas gasosas e o rendimento.

ABSTRACT The high concentration of salts in water sources in the semi-arid region of the Brazilian Northeast stands out as one of the limiting factors for the expansion of irrigated cultivation of fruit crops. Thus, the search for a strategy capable of mitigating the effect of saline stress on plants is of paramount importance. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the gas exchange and yield of yellow passion fruit cultivated under brackish water irrigation strategies and potassium fertilization in two production cycles. The experiment was conducted under field conditions, using the randomized block design in a 6 × 2 factorial scheme, corresponding to six strategies of irrigation with brackish water applied in the different phenological stages of the crop: WS - without stress, irrigation with low-salinity water throughout the crop cycle; irrigation with high-salinity water only in the vegetative stage - VE; flowering stage - FL; fruiting stage - FR; and successively in the vegetative and flowering stages - VE/FL; and vegetative and fruiting stages - VE/FR, and two potassium doses (60 and 100% of the recommendation), with four replicates and three plants per plot. In irrigation, water with high (4.0 dS m-1) or low (1.3 dS m-1) electrical conductivity was used. The potassium dose of 100% recommendation corresponded to 345 g of K2O per plant per year. The yellow passion fruit ‘BRS GA1’ was more sensitive to salt stress applied successively in the vegetative and flowering stages and vegetative and fruiting stages, showing reductions in the intercellular CO2 concentration, CO2 assimilation rate, instantaneous water use efficiency, number of fruits, and yield. Irrigation with water of 4.0 dS m-1 in the fruiting stage is a promising strategy, as it does not compromise production. The dose of potassium equivalent to 60% was better than 100% of recommendation in terms of gas exchange and yield.

Resumo A goiaba é uma fruta de grande aceitação pelos brasileiros e é largamente produzida no Nordeste do Brasil, região com a presença de fontes de água que comumente apresentam elevadas concentrações de sais. Assim, a busca por técnicas que permitam o manejo dessas águas é de extrema importância para expansão da agricultura irrigada. Neste contexto, o ácido salicílico é um fitohormônio que pode contribuir na diminuição dos efeitos do estresse salino nas plantas. Diante do exposto, objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar o efeito da aplicação foliar de ácido salicílico em diferentes concentrações na mitigação do estresse salino sobre as trocas gasosas, o crescimento e a qualidade de mudas de goiabeira ‘Paluma’. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, em Campina Grande - PB, utilizando-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados em arranjo fatorial 5 × 5, sendo cinco níveis de condutividade elétrica da água (0,6; 1,5; 2,4; 3,3 e 4,2 dS m-1) e cinco concentrações de ácido salicílico (0 - Controle; 0,8; 1,6; 2,4 e 3,2 mM), com quatro repetições e duas plantas por parcela. A aplicação foliar de ácido salicílico na concentração de até 1,4 mM reduziu os efeitos deletérios do estresse salino sobre a eficiência instantânea no uso da água das mudas de goiabeira ‘Paluma’ aos 180 dias após o semeio. As concentrações de ácido salicílico aplicadas via foliar não mitigaram os efeitos nocivos da salinidade da água de irrigação sobre o crescimento e a qualidade das mudas de goiabeira ‘Paluma’.

Abstract Guava is a popular Brazilian fruit that is widely produced in Northeastern Brazil, a region with water sources that commonly have high concentrations of salts. Thus, searching for techniques that allow the management of these waters is extremely important for the expansion of irrigated agriculture. In this context, salicylic acid is a phytohormone that can contribute to reducing the effects of salt stress on plants. Given the above, this study evaluated the effect of foliar application of salicylic acid at different concentrations in the mitigation of salt stress on gas exchange, growth, and quality of 'Paluma' guava seedlings. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, in Campina Grande - PB, Brazil, using a randomized block design in a 5 × 5 factorial arrangement, corresponding to five levels of electrical conductivity of water (0.6, 1.5, 2.4, 3.3, and 4.2 dS m-1) and five concentrations of salicylic acid (0 - Control; 0.8, 1.6, 2.4, and 3.2 mM), with four replicates and two plants per plot. Foliar application of salicylic acid at a concentration of up to 1.4 mM reduced the deleterious effects of salt stress on the instantaneous water use efficiency of 'Paluma' guava seedlings at 180 days after sowing. The concentrations of salicylic acid applied via foliar did not mitigate the harmful effects of irrigation water salinity on the growth and quality of 'Paluma' guava seedlings.

RESUMO Os solos afetados por sais ocupam extensas áreas em regiões áridas e semiáridas do mundo, e impactam a produção de alimentos, notadamente quando os processos de salinização ocorrem em áreas irrigadas. Nesse contexto, a possibilidade de uso de técnicas para recuperação desses solos precisa ser considerada. Entretanto, muitas dessas técnicas são inacessíveis para a maioria dos agricultores do semiárido brasileiro, face aos elevados custos, especialmente quando é necessária a instalação de sistema de drenagem subsuperficial. Há, portanto, necessidade de se avaliar outras estratégias de recuperação do solo, bem como a possibilidade de aproveitamento dessas áreas para outros propósitos. Nesta revisão são abordados tópicos relacionados à caracterização e impactos dos solos afetados por sais, a influência dos microrganismos do solo e as estratégias de recuperação, tais como o uso de condicionadores químicos e orgânicos, biodrenagem, fitorremediação e revegetação com espécies tolerantes. Os temas abordados nesta revisão indicam novas possibilidades para a recuperação e manejo dos solos afetados por sais no semiárido brasileiro. Também é apresentado um estudo de caso, que demonstra que o aproveitamento dos solos afetados por sais é definido por aspectos técnicos, sociais e econômicos.

ABSTRACT Salt-affected soils occupy extensive areas in arid and semi-arid regions around the world, and impact food production, particularly when salinization processes occur in irrigated areas. In this context, the possibility of using techniques for the reclamation of these soils needs to be considered. However, many of these techniques are inaccessible to most farmers in the Brazilian semi-arid region, given the high costs, mainly when it is necessary to install a subsurface drainage system. Thus, there is a need to evaluate other soil reclamation strategies as well as the possibility of using these areas for other purposes. This review covers topics related to the characterization and impacts of salt-affected soils, the influence of soil microorganisms, and strategies for soil reclamation, such as the use of chemical and organic conditioners, bio-drainage, phytoremediation, and revegetation with tolerant species. The topics addressed in this review indicate new possibilities for the reclamation and management of salt-affected soils in the Brazilian semi-arid region. A case study is also presented, which demonstrates that the use of salt-affected soils is defined by technical, social, and economic aspects.

RESUMO A ocorrência de fontes hídricas com elevadas concentrações de sais é um problema frequente na região semiárida do Nordeste do Brasil. Assim, a busca por estratégias de manejo capazes de minimizar o efeito do estresse salino nas culturas é de extrema importância. Neste contexto, objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar as trocas gasosas e a produção do maracujazeiro amarelo ‘BRS GA1’ em função das estratégias de irrigação com águas salobras e doses de potássio. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida sob condições de campo em São Domingos, PB, Brasil, utilizando-se o delineamento de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial 6 × 2, sendo os tratamentos constituídos de seis estratégias de irrigação com águas salinas (SE - irrigação com água de baixa salinidade durante todo ciclo; irrigação com água de alta salinidade na fase vegetativa - VE; floração - FL; frutificação - FR; nas fases sucessivas vegetativa/floração - VE/FL; vegetativa/frutificação - VE/FR) e duas doses de potássio (60 e 100% (345 g de K2O por planta por ano) da recomendação, com quatro repetições e três plantas por parcela. Utilizaram-se dois níveis de salinidade da água (1,3 e 4,0 dS m−1), em diferentes fases fenológicas da cultura. A irrigação com água de 4,0 dS m−1 reduziu o potencial hídrico e osmótico foliar, a condutância estomática, a transpiração e a taxa de assimilação de CO2 do maracujazeiro-azedo, independente da estratégia de irrigação. O estresse salino nas fases vegetativa e de floração de forma contínua comprometeu a produção do maracujazeiro-azedo.

ABSTRACT The occurrence of water sources with high concentrations of salts is a common problem in the semi-arid region of north-eastern Brazil. The search for management strategies that can minimize the effect of salt stress on crops is therefore extremely important. As such, this study aimed to evaluate gas exchange and production in the yellow passion fruit ‘BRS GA1’as a function of irrigation strategies using brackish water and doses of potassium. RESUMEN La salinidad es un problema de interés en la producción agrícola en muchas partes del mundo. La germinación de semillas y el crecimiento inicial de las plántulas son dos aspectos críticos para el establecimiento de cultivos, especialmente los sensibles al estrés por salinidad. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar la germinación y crecimiento inicial de las plántulas de ají producidas a partir de semillas en diferentes tiempos de imbibición en soluciones de NaCl. El experimento se realizó en un diseño completamente al azar, en un arreglo trifactorial de 2 × 4 × 5 utilizando dos especies de ají (Capsicum chinense Jacq. y Capsicum frutescens L.), cuatro niveles de conductividad eléctrica (CE) de soluciones (1,5; 3,0; 4,5 y 6,0dS m-1) y cinco tiempos de imbibición de semillas en las soluciones (2, 4, 6, 8 y 10h), con tres repeticiones. Las variables evaluadas fueron el número de plántulas germinadas, porcentaje de germinación, altura de las plántulas y longitud de la raíz. Los resultados mostraron que C. frutescens fue más tolerante en soluciones salinas preparadas con NaCl en diferentes tiempos de imbibición en comparación con C. chinense. Así, los resultados sugieren que dependiendo de la variedad de ají, se recomienda el uso de semillas impregnadas en solución salina con niveles de salinidad compatibles con los de campo (en suelos salinos y/o riego con aguas salinas).

ABSTRACT Salinity is one of the striking problems in agricultural production in many parts of the world. Seed germination and seedling growth are two critical stages for the establishment of crops generally most sensitive to salt stress. The present study aimed at evaluating the germination and initial growth of pepper seedlings produced from seeds under different soaking times in NaCl solutions. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a 2 × 4 × 5 factorial scheme using two pepper species (Capsicum chinense Jacq. and Capsicum frutescens L.), four levels of electrical conductivity (EC) of solutions (1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0dS m-1) and five times of seed soaking in the solutions (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10h), with three replications. The traits evaluated were the number of germinated seedlings, percentage of germination, seedling height, and root length. The results showed that C. frutescens pepper was more tolerant to different times of soaking in saline solutions prepared with NaCl compared to C. chinense. Thus, the results suggest that depending on the pepper species, it is recommended to use seeds primed in saline solutions with salinity levels compatible with those under field conditions (in saline soils and/or irrigation with saline waters).
