Qualea grandiflora Mart. (“pau-terra”) is a medicinal plant symbolic from Cerrado biome. Qualea species reportedly have antiparasitic properties, but their active compounds have yet to be identified. In this study, we investigated the antiplasmodial activity of Q. grandiflora fruit and stem extracts against Plasmodium falciparum. The polar extracts of both fruits and stems showed promising in vitro antiplasmodial activity against sensitive and resistant P. falciparum strains (half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) = 1.2 and 4.2 ng mL-1, respectively), low cytotoxicity against human hepatic cells (IC50HepG2 ≥ 400 ng mL-1), and a noteworthy selectivity index (SI ≥ 322 and ≥ 96, respectively). The fruit ethanolic extract revealed significant oral efficacy at 100 mg kg-1 in a mouse model of P. berghei malaria (100% reduction in parasitemia on day 5 post-infection). To investigate the chemical composition of the extracts, we developed a method involving liquid chromatography-high resolution quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrometer. The chemical profiling of active extracts indicated 32 compounds, including gallotannins, ellagic acid derivatives and flavonoids. The common component in the active polar extracts was found to be ellagic acid (EA), which may contribute favorably to the in vitro and in vivo inhibitory activity observed in this study.

ABSTRACT The Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm is developed for the stochastic frontier models most used in practice with cross-section data. The resulting algorithms can be easily programmed into a computer and are shown to be worthy alternatives to general-purpose optimization routines currently used. The algorithms for the half normal and the exponential models have closed-form expressions whereas those for the truncated normal and gamma models will require the numerical solution of a nonlinear equation. Implementations of the EM algorithm either as a stand-alone routine or in accelerated form and also combined with Newton-like methods are discussed. We provide illustrations, along with R tools, for cost and production frontiers.

A avaliação da qualidade visual de paisagens tem-se mostrado ferramenta eficiente para a determinação de diretrizes de usos adequados do solo, levando-se em conta o potencial atrativo dos diversos tipos de cobertura da superfície terrestre. Dentre os empregos das imagens orbitais, é bastante difundida a geração de mapas de ocupação do solo que podem, por sua vez, servir de base para a avaliação da paisagem. Com o presente trabalho objetivou-se propor e testar uma metodologia para a avaliação da qualidade visual da paisagem, através do emprego de imagem orbital classificada e pós-processada e da implementação de um algoritmo específico, para avaliação dos diversos usos da superfície na área em estudo. Para tanto e com base no método indireto de avaliação da paisagem, desenvolveu-se um algoritmo computacional que se utiliza de imagens orbitais para a valoração paisagística. Os resultados obtidos foram mosaicos e mapas da qualidade visual da paisagem da área de estudo. Ao final, concluiu-se que a técnica de avaliação através do programa computacional mostrou-se adequada à finalidade proposta; no entanto, deve ainda ser tida como resultado prévio e base para estudos mais detalhados.

The evaluation of landscapes has been showing an efficient tool for purposes of determining the appropriate land uses, considering the potential attraction of the several types of terrestrial surface covering. Among the employments of the orbital images, the generation of land use maps is quite spread, which serves as base for the landscape evaluation. The present work has the objective to propose and to test a methodology for the visual quality evaluation of the landscape, through the employment of classified and post-processed orbital image and implementing a specific algorithm, for evaluation of several uses of the land surface in the study area. Thus, on the basis of indirect method of landscape evaluation, an algorithm that uses of orbital images for the landscape evaluation was developed. The obtained results were mosaics and maps of the visual quality of landscape of the studied area. At the end, it was concluded that the computational program technique evaluation was found to be appropriate for the proposed purpose, however, it should be considered as preliminary result and base for more detailed studies.

Brejos de altitude são formações vegetais disjuntas da Mata Atlântica, que ocorrem no Agreste de Pernambuco e Paraíba, como ilhas de umidade no ambiente semi-árido da Caatinga. O Parque Vasconcelos Sobrinho, situado na Serra dos Cavalos, em Caruaru, PE, é um exemplo do pouco que resta desses brejos na região. Com 359 ha, abriga uma floresta exuberante e diversos corpos d'água, porém vem sofrendo intenso processo de degradação, em decorrência da agricultura irrigada em seu interior e da exploração de argila no entorno. Para uma caracterização dos recursos hídricos foram obtidos, no período de 1998 a 2000, dados de chuva, de vazão nos riachos do Chuchu e Capoeirão, e de qualidade da água, nos dois cursos d'água e nos três maiores reservatórios existentes no Parque. No estudo de demandas pelo uso da água, ênfase maior foi dada aos conflitos da atividade de irrigação em relação ao uso da água para abastecimento público e à preservação dos ecossistemas locais. Neste trabalho, conclui-se que em Brejo dos Cavalos a precipitação pluviométrica é superior a do seu entorno, devido a razões orográficas e à própria existência da floresta remanescente, mas o desmatamento progressivo tende a alterar as condições microclimáticas locais. Neste contexto, o cultivo do chuchu é o principal consumidor de água no Parque, gerando perda de vazão dos cursos d'água e menor aporte para os reservatórios, os quais já começaram a sofrer assoreamento, devido a processos erosivos gerados sobretudo pelos desmontes na exploração da argila. Tais constatações exigem ação imediata do poder público, principalmente a implantação de um Plano de Manejo para o Parque.

Humid areas at high altitude are found in semi-arid region of Pernambuco and Paraíba in Northeastern Brazil. Although the vegetation in the surrounding area is the semi-arid 'caatinga', in these high altitude areas, natural vegetation is similar to that of the Atlantic Forest. Municipal Ecological Park "Vasconcelos Sobrinho", is situated in "Brejo dos Cavalos" in Caruaru in the State of Pernambuco - Brazil and is a remnant example of this kind of environment. The park, with 359 ha, has a rich forest and several streamlets and dams. But there is a degradation process due to irrigated agriculture inside the park and due to clay exploitation in its borders. Water Resources in the ecological park have been studied from 1998 to 2000. Rainfall in "Brejo dos Cavalos" is significantly higher than in surrounding area because of the altitude and the forest itself. A slow but progressive process of deforestation jeopardizes local climatic conditions. Increasing irrigated crops, mainly chayote, reduces water volume in embankments. Erosion in both deforested area and clay exploitation area leads to soil impoverishment and silting up of dams. An urgent action from municipal government is needed to stop degradation and set up of an environmental management program.

FUNDAMENTOS: A aprotinina, um antifibrinolítico de natureza protéica, tem sido proposta pela literatura, no intuito de minimizar os efeitos adversos da circulação extracorpórea ao sistema fibrinolítico, permitindo assim uma hemostasia mais adequada. OBJETIVO: Estudar comparativamente o efeito da utilização profilática de baixas doses de aprotinina em pacientes submetidos à circulação extracorpórea. MÉTODO: Dezessete pacientes portadores de valvopatia mitral submetidos a correção cirúrgica utilizando-se circulação extracorpórea foram aleatoriamente divididos em dois grupos: I (controle) -- 9 pacientes nos quais foi administrado placebo no perfusato e a cada hora de CEC; II (aprotinina) -- 8 pacientes nos quais foram administrados 30000 KIU/kg e 7500 KIU/kg de aprotinina adicionados ao volume do perfusato a cada hora de CEC. O volume total de sangramento pós-operatório nas primeiras 24 horas foi monitorado, assim como amostras sangüíneas foram colhidas após indução anestésica e após a neutralização da heparina com sulfato de protamina para que os seguintes parâmetros fossem avaliados: atividade de protrombina (AP), tempo de tromboplastina parcial ativado (TTPA), tempo de trombina (TT), dosagem de fibrinogênio, concentração de antitrombina III (ATIII), tempo de lise da euglobulina (TLE) e dosagem do dímero --D (DDi). RESULTADOS: O volume médio total de sangramento nas primeiras 24 horas no grupo controle foi 690,67 ± 377,12, enquanto que no grupo da aprotinina em baixas doses foi de 248,75 ± 103,13 (p=0,0017). No quadro abaixo estão apresentados os resultados obtidos a partir das análises das amostras sangüíneas pré e pós-operatórias comparativas dos grupos controle (I) e aprotinina (II). <IMG SRC="http:/img/fbpe/rbccv/v17n1/9162q1.gif" WIDTH=[any value] HEIGHT=[any value]> CONCLUSÃO: A utilização da aprotinina, em baixa dose, foi eficaz na redução do sangramento, assim na diminuição da fibrinólise.

BACKGROUND: The use of aprotinin, a antifibrinolytic agent, has been shown to decrease damaging effects on cardiopulmonary bypass in fibrinolytic system, which may improve hemostasis. OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of low dose aprotinin in patients undergoing extracorporeal circulation. METHOD: Seventeen patients, underwent cardiopulmonary bypass to mitral valve replacement, was ramdomized in two groups: I (control) -- 9 patients received placebo after anesthesia induction and each hour in the priming; II (aprotinin) -- 8 patients received after anesthesia induction 30,000 KIU/kg and 7.500 KIU/kg each hour in the priming during the perfusion. The blood loss was observed through the first 24 hours postoperatively. Arterial blood samples were taken after anesthesia induction and after administration of protamina in order to analyse: prothrombin activity (PA), partial thomboplastin time (PTT), thrombin time (TT), euglobulin lysis time (ELT) and to measure levels of fibrinogen (F), d-dimer (dD) and antithrombin III (ATIII). RESULTS: Mean postoperative bleeding at the 24th hours was 690.67±377 in the control group and 248,.75±105 in the aprotinin group (p=0.0017). O monitoramento das variações morfodinâmicas das praias associadas com um estuário contíguo à Ponta dos Garvez, Bahia, Brasil, e a superposição de fotos aéreas da região, mostram a presença de distintos ciclos erosivos e construtivos, de baixa e alta freqüências. Entre 1959 e 1989, um evento de erosão e progradação da linha de costa foi reconhecido nas praias oceânicas fora do estuário. Dentro do estuário, uma fase erosiva na margem sul, coincide com uma fase construtiva no outro lado, e vice-versa. Na margem estuarina sul, são também percebidos ciclos de erosão e progradação de baixa freqüência, porém com um sentido inverso quando comparados aos da praia oceânica contígua. Durante o período de monitoramento das praias (fevereiro de 1991 a julho de 1992), a praia oceânica apresentou taxas de recuo variando de 23,7m/ano, na entrada do canal, a 1,1m/ano, três quilômetros distante do mesmo. Durante o mesmo período, a praia estuarina avançou a uma taxa de 60,3m/ano. A dinâmica de sedimentação de longo prazo em ambas as margens da desembocadura do estuário parece estar associada à posição do canal do delta de maré vazante.

Monitoring of the morphodynamic variations of the beaches associated with an estuary contiguous with Garcez Point, Bahia, Brazil, and the superposition of aerial photographs from the region, show the presence of distinctive erosive and constructive cycles of low and high frequencies. Between 1959 and 1989, one event of shoreline erosion and progradation was recognized on the oceanic beaches just outside the estuary. Inside the estuary, an erosion phase at the southern margin coincides with a constructive phase at the other side, and vice-versa. On the southern estuarine beach, low-frequency cycles of erosion and progradation are also perceived, but with the inverse trend when compared to the contiguous oceanic beach. During the beach monitoring period (February/1991 to July/1992), the oceanic beach showed retreat rates varying from 23.7m/year, at the channel entrance, to 1.0m/year, three kilometers away from it. During the same period, the estuarine beach advanced at a rate of 60.3m/year. The long-term dynamics of the shoreline position in both sides of the estuarine entrance appears to be related to the position of the channel in the ebb-tidal delta.

O Grupo Barreiras é uma cobertura sedimentar terrígena, de idade Miocênica a pleistocênica inferior, que tem grande ocorrência ao longo do litoral brasileiro. Na região de Conde, localizada na porção nordeste do Estado da Bahia, as características sedimentológicas desses depósitos são indicativas de uma deposição por sistemas fluviais de padrão entrelaçado, com carga de leito areno-cascalhosa, associados a leques aluviais, em condições de clima árido a semi-árido. A porção basal do grupo é dominada por litofácies areno-cascalhosas depositadas por fluxos de detritos e fluxos de detritos pseudoplásticos, com uma ocorrência menor de depósitos de fluxo subaquoso, caracterizando uma deposição em um sistema fluvial proximal. A porção superior é composta por sedimentos areno-cascalhosos que incluem depositos subaquosos, de fluxos de detritos e de fluxos de detritos verdadeiros. As características desses depósitos sugerem uma deposição em um contexto deposicional mais distal, em relação à porção basal do grupo, inferido por uma maior ocorrência de depósitos de fluxo aquoso e pela presença, ainda que rara, de macroformas de acrescimento para jusante. Além do controle climático, a deposição do Grupo Barreiras foi fortemente influenciada pelo tectonismo intraplaca, que vem afetando a plataforma sul-americana a partir do Mioceno Médio e que marca o início da ação neotectônica no Brasil.

The Barreiras Group is a Miocene to Lower Pleistocene continental terrigenous sedimentary deposit exhibiting a large occurrence along the Brazilian coast. In the Conde region, located in the northeastern part of the State of Bahia, the sedimentological characteristics of these sediments are indicative of a deposition as gravelly and sandy bed load in braided fluvial systems, related to alluvial fans, under an arid to semi-arid climate. The basal portion of the group is dominated by a gravelly-sandy lithofacies deposited by debris flows and pseudoplastic debris flows, with lesser occurrences of subaqueous deposits, characterizing a proximal fluvial system deposition. The upper portion is made up of gravelly-sandy sediments that include subaqueous, debris flows and pseudoplastic debris flows deposits. They suggest deposition in a more distal zone as indicated by the larger occurrence of subaqueous deposits and the presence, though rare, of downstream-accretion macroforms. Besides the climate control, deposition of the Barreiras Group was strongly influenced by the intraplate tectonism, which has been affecting the South America Platform since the Middle Miocene, when neotectonism began in Brazil.

Fundamentos: A insuficiência cardíaca constitui-se em grave problema de saúde pública. Recente proposta de tratamento cirúrgico para a insuficiência cardíaca terminal é a ventriculectomia parcial esquerda, não havendo publicações específicas sobre seus benefícios em pacientes acima de 60 anos. Objetivo: Estudar os resultados obtidos com o tratamento da miocardiopatia dilatada em pacientes acima de 60 anos, submetidos à ventriculectomia parcial esquerda. Método: Entre maio de 1995 e dezembro de 1997 dez pacientes com idade entre 62 e 78 anos, portadores de miocardiopatia dilatada em classe funcional IV (NYHA), foram submetidos à ventriculectomia parcial esquerda no Serviço de Cirurgia Cardiotorácica da Disciplina de Cirurgia Cardiotorácica da Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul - Núcleo de Hospital Universitário. A ressecção, de forma elíptica, foi realizada na parede lateral do VE, entre os dois músculos papilares, estendendo-se, desde o ápice até próximo do anel mitral. Resultados: Nove (90%) pacientes receberam alta hospitalar e um paciente (10%) evoluiu para óbito, no sexto dia de pós-operatório. O fragmento ressecado variou de 6 a 10,5 cm de comprimento por 4 a 5,5 cm de largura, com 10,8±1,3 cm por 5±0,06 cm em média. O controle ecocardiográfico demonstrou: <img SRC="http:/img/fbpe/rbccv/v16n1/5184q1.gif"> No seguimento, observou-se que três pacientes (30%) encontram-se em grau funcional I ( NYHA), três pacientes (30%) em II e um paciente (10%) em grau funcional III. A sobrevida atuarial desses pacientes foi de 100%, 87%, 87% e 67% para 6, 12, 24 e 36 meses de seguimento, respectivamente. Conclusão: A ventriculectomia parcial esquerda, realizada em pacientes com idade superior a 60 anos portadores de insuficiência cardíaca com severa disfunção hemodinâmica, apresentou mortalidade baixa, promovendo recuperação acentuada do desempenho cardíaco.

Background: Cardiac insufficiency is one of the most important problems challenging the public health resources in the modern world. The partial left ventriculectomy (Batista's Operation) is the most recent surgical treatment for the end-stage heart failure but, until now, without specific reports in the cardiovascular literature regarding its results in elderly patients. Objective: To study the results of the Batista's Operation in aged patients. Method: From May 1995 to December 1997, ten patients aged 62 to 78 years, suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy (class IV NYHA), were treated with the partial left ventriculectomy procedure in the Cardiothoracic Surgical Clinic of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Department of Mato Grosso do Sul Federal University -- (University Hospital Nucleus). Results: Nine (90%) patients were discharged from the hospital and one (10%) patient died in the 6th postoperative day from respiratory insufficiency. An elliptical resection was performed in the lateral wall of the left ventricle, from the apex to near the atrioventricular groove and between the papillary muscles. Dimensions of the removed fragment (mean values): 10.8+1.3 cm x 5.0+0.6 cm. The echocardiographic control has proved: <img SRC="http:/img/fbpe/rbccv/v16n1/5184q2.gif"> FE = fractional shortening, EF = ejection fraction, LVSD = left ventricular end-systolic diameter, LVDD = left ventricular end-diastolic diameter, DVL = diastolic volume lowering and SVR = systolic volume rised. In the late follow up three patients were in NYHA class I, three patients in class II and one in class III. The actuarial survival rate were 100%,87%,87% and 67% for 6, 12, 24 and 36 months respectively. Conclusion: The partial left ventriculectomy performed in elderly patients with cardiac insufficiency with severe hemodynamics disfunction resulted in 10% mortality, promoted important recovery of the cardiac performance by: improvement of NYHA functional class, enhancement of the ejection fraction and left ventricular % systolic shortening; reduction of the left ventricular systolic and diastolic diameters and determining better ventricular volume/mass ratio.

The knowledge of the slug flow characteristics is very important when designing pipelines and process equipment. When the intermittences typical in slug flow occurs, the fluctuations of the flow variables bring additional concern to the designer. Focusing on this subject the present work discloses the experimental data on slug flow characteristics occurring in a large-size, large-scale facility. The results were compared with data provided by mechanistic slug flow models in order to verify their reliability when modelling actual flow conditions. Experiments were done with natural gas and oil or water as the liquid phase. To compute the frequency and velocity of the slug cell and to calculate the length of the elongated bubble and liquid slug one used two pressure transducers measuring the pressure drop across the pipe diameter at different axial locations. A third pressure transducer measured the pressure drop between two axial location 200 m apart. The experimental data were compared with results of Camargo's1 algorithm (1991, 1993), which uses the basics of Dukler & Hubbard's (1975) slug flow model, and those calculated by the transient two-phase flow simulator OLGA.

Neste trabalho, formula-se um modelo macroeconômico de curto prazo a fim de se derivar as interações entre os setores agrícola e não-agrícola por ocasião da aplicação de políticas de estabilização. As variáveis exógenas são mudanças nas políticas fiscal, monetária e cambial e nos preços internacionais. As variáveis endógenas explicitamente analisadas são renda real para cada setor e preços relativos. Os principais resultados são: (a) os preços relativos tendem a variar quando as variáveis exógenas variam; (b) a produção agrícola e os preços relativos da gricultura tendem a se reduzir face a políticas fiscais e monetárias expansivas mesmo quando a elasticidade-renda de demanda para produtos agrícolas for zero; (c) embora o efeito inflacionario de políticas monetárias e fiscais expansivas seja maior quando a elasticidade de oferta de produtos agrícolas é baixa, os preços nominais da agricultura tendem a crescer no máximo tanto quanto os preços nominais não-agrícolas. Os efeitos de diversas pressuposições a respeito da elasticidades de demanda e de oferta sobre os resultados do modelo são também derivados.

A short run macro-model is formulated to derive the interactions between farm and nonfarm sector in response to stabilization policies. Exagenous variables are changes in fiscal and monetary policies, exchange rate, and international prices. Endogenous variables explicitly analyzed are farm and nonfarm real incomes and nominal and relative prices. Main results of the model are: (a) relative prices tend to change when exogenous variables change; (b) farm output and relative price tend to be reduced by expansive fiscal and monetary policies even If income elasticity of demand for farm products is zero; (c) although the inflationary effect of expansive monetary or fiscal policy is higher the lower the elasticity of supply of farm products, farm nominal prices tend to increase at most a much as nonfarm nominal prices. The effects of several different assumptions regarding supply and demand elasticities upon the model results are derived.
