RESUMO Objetivo analisar o impacto do distanciamento social devido à pandemia de COVID-19, sob a percepção e o incômodo com o zumbido crônico e a relação dos achados com a ansiedade e a depressão. Métodos a amostra foi composta por conveniência, incluindo sujeitos com idades de 21 a 78 anos. A avaliação foi realizada em dois períodos: pré-distanciamento (final de 2019) e durante o distanciamento (2020). A segunda avaliação foi realizada de forma online, via Google Forms, consistindo nos seguintes procedimentos: questionário semiestruturado, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Inventário de Ansiedade de Beck (BAI) e Inventário de Depressão de Beck (BDI). Resultados nas comparações dos procedimentos entre os períodos pré e pós-distanciamento social, foi evidenciada diferença estatisticamente significativa para o THI e o BAI, mas não para o BDI. Na correlação da percepção do zumbido crônico com a ansiedade, foi observada diferença estatisticamente significativa, positiva e forte, mas não significativa com a depressão. Conclusão o distanciamento social devido à pandemia de COVID-19 piorou a percepção e o incômodo com o zumbido crônico, estando correlacionado com aumento nos sintomas de ansiedade.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the impact of social distancing, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, on the perception and nuisance with chronic tinnitus and the relationship of the findings with anxiety and depression. Methods The sample was composed by convenience, including subjects aged 21 to 78 years. The evaluation was conducted in two periods: pre-distancing (late 2019) and during distancing (2020). The second evaluation was conducted online via Google Forms, consisting of the following procedures: Semistructured questionnaire, Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results In the comparison of the results of the procedures performed pre-social distancing and during social-distancing, a statistically significant difference was evidenced for the THI and the BAI, but not for the BDI. In the correlation of the perception of chronic tinnitus with anxiety, a statistically significant difference was observed, positive and strong, but not significant with depression. Conclusion Social distancing, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, worsened the perception of and annoyance with chronic tinnitus and was correlated with an increase in anxiety symptoms.

ABSTRACT Objective To analyze age-related changes in the central auditory pathway in healthy elderly individuals. Methods A prospective, quantitative cross-sectional study. The caseload comprised 18 adults (mean age, 22.78 years) and 18 elderly individuals (mean age, 66.72 years) of both sexes, who met inclusion criteria. Subjects were submitted to basic audiological evaluation and related electrophysiologic tests: brainstem auditory evoked potential with click stimulus and frequency-following response. Results Elderly individuals had higher wave and interpeak latencies (waves I, III and V and interpeaks I-V and III-V) of brainstem auditory evoked potential. Latencies of frequency following response waves A, E, F and O were also higher in elderly individuals. Frequency following response amplitudes were better in A than in D, F and O waves in these subjects. Likewise, interpeak intervals (V-A and V-O) were larger in elderly relative to adult individuals. Lower slope values were observed in elderly individuals. Conclusion Brainstem auditory evoked potential and frequency-following response allowed appropriate assessment of age-related changes in the auditory pathway. Slower neural response to auditory stimuli suggests reduced synchrony between neural structures.

RESUMO Objetivo Investigar se há diferenças nos achados audiológicos periféricos e centrais entre indivíduos com limiares auditivos normais com e sem zumbido crônico e, com isso, entender quais exames auditivos são importantes nessa população. Métodos A amostra foi composta por conveniência, incluindo indivíduos de 18 a 59 anos, divididos em dois grupos: grupo 1 (G1), formado por sujeitos sem queixa de zumbido crônico e grupo 2 (G2), por indivíduos com zumbido crônico. A avaliação consistiu nos seguintes procedimentos: anamnese, audiometria de altas frequências (AAF), emissões otoacústicas transientes (EOAT), potencial evocado auditivo de tronco encefálico (PEATE)-clique, frequency following response (FFR) e o potencial evocado auditivo de longa latência (PEALL)-fala. Resultados O G2 apresentou valores aumentados para a AFF, com diferenças significativas. Para ambos os grupos, a EOAT mostrou predominância de presença de respostas. No PEATE, não houve diferenças estatisticamente significativas. No FFR, o G1 obteve maior amplitude de onda V e houve maior ocorrência de ausências no PEALL dos potenciais P1, N2 e P300, no G2. Conclusão A AAF, a análise da relação da onda V/I do PEATE, o FFR e o PEALL identificaram alterações nos indivíduos com zumbido crônico, demonstrando que tais procedimentos são promissores na avaliação dessa população.

ABSTRACT Purpose To investigate whether there are differences in peripheral and central audiological findings between individuals with normal hearing thresholds with and without chronic tinnitus, and thereby understand which hearing tests are most important in this population. Methods The sample was composed of convenience, including individuals from 18 to 59 years old, divided into two groups: Group 1 (G1) composed of subjects without complaints of chronic tinnitus, and Group 2 (G2) composed of individuals with chronic tinnitus. The evaluation consisted of the following procedures: Anamnesis, High-frequency audiometry (HFA), Transient Otoacoustic emissions (TOAEs), Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)-click, Frequency Following Response (FFR), and Long Latency Auditory Evoked Potential (LLAEP)-speak. Results G2 showed increased values for HFA, with significant differences. For both groups, TOAEs showed a predominance of responses. In ABR there were no statistically significant differences. In FFR, G1 obtained a greater amplitude of wave V and there was a greater absence in LLAEP of P1, N2, and P300 in G2. Conclusion The HFA, the analysis of the wave V/I ratio in ABR, the FFR, and the LLAEP identified alterations in individuals with chronic tinnitus, demonstrating that such procedures are promising in the evaluation of this population.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar a correlação das diferentes médias tonais (tritonal, quadritonal e octonal) com o Índice Percentual de Reconhecimento de Fala e com a desvantagem auditiva. Métodos Participaram do estudo 56 sujeitos, distribuídos em dois grupos, com configuração audiométrica descendente: Grupo 1 (G1) - 28 sujeitos com média tritonal igual ou inferior a 25 dBNA e Grupo 2 (G2) - 28 sujeitos com média tritonal pior que 25 dBNA (G2), sendo pareados quanto ao gênero e idade (p= 0,544). Todos foram submetidos à audiometria tonal liminar, Índice Percentual de Reconhecimento de Fala (IPRF) com lista monossilábica de palavras gravadas, medidas de imitância acústica e ao questionário Hearing Handicap Inventory for Adults. A análise de correlação foi realizada entre as médias de três frequências (M3), de quatro frequências (M4) e de oito frequências (M8) com o IPRF e com a desvantagem auditiva, utilizando o teste de correlação de Spearman, sendo o nível de significância considerado <0,05 (5%). Resultados Evidenciou-se correlação estatisticamente significativa do IPRF com a M8, para o G1, e do IPRF com M4 e M8, para o G2. Observou-se tendência à significância, tanto para o G1, como para o G2, em relação à M8, quando correlacionada com a desvantagem auditiva, demonstrando que analisar as oito frequências do audiograma (frequências mais agudas que 4000 Hz) parece possibilitar maior compreensão em relação à desvantagem auditiva do paciente. Conclusão Houve correlação estatisticamente significativa do IPRF com a M8, nos dois grupos, denotando uma redução no desempenho do IPRF, com o aumento da média, considerando as oito frequências. A M8 refletiu melhor a desvantagem auditiva causada pela perda auditiva, no G1.

ABSTRACT Purpose To verify the correlation of different tonal means (tritonal, quadritonal and octanol) with the Percentage Index of Speech Recognition and with hearing disadvantage. Methods 56 subjects participated in the study, distributed into two groups, with descendant audiometric configuration: Subjects with tritonal average equal to or less than 25 dB HL(G1) and subjects with a tritone average worse than 25 dB HL(G2), being matched for sex and age (p=0.544). All were safe by Threshold Tone Audiometry, Speech Recognition Percentage Index (IPRF) with a list of keywords, Acoustic I Measures and the Elearing Handicap Inventory for Adults. The correlation analysis was performed between the averages, of three frequencies (M3), of four frequencies (M4) and of eight frequencies (M8) with the IPRF and with auditory disadvantage, using the Spearman correlation test, the significance level being considered <0.05 (5%). Results There was a statistically significant correlation of the IPRF with M8 , for G1, and the IPRF with M4 and M8, for G2. There was a tendency towards significance, both for G1 and G2, in relation to M8 when correlated with hearing impairment, demonstrating that analyzing the eight frequencies of the audiogram (frequencies higher than 4000 Hz) seems to allow a greater understanding of the patient’s hearing handicap. Conclusion There was a statistically significant correlation between the IPRF and M8, in both groups, denoting a reduction in the performance of the IPRF, with an increase in the mean, considering the eight frequencies. M8 better reflected the hearing disadvantage caused by the hearing loss in G1.

RESUMO Objetivo: comparar a latência e a amplitude do Frequency-Following Response e do Potencial Evocado Auditivo de Média Latência em indivíduos típicos e com alterações das habilidades auditivas, assim como investigar a sensibilidade e especificidade de ambas as avaliações frente ao processamento auditivo central. Métodos: 32 indivíduos de ambos os sexos foram distribuídos em Grupo 1 (sem alterações de habilidades auditivas) e Grupo 2 (com alteração em habilidades auditivas). Os grupos foram divididos de acordo com testes comportamentais do processamento auditivo central. Os indivíduos de ambos os grupos foram submetidos aos potenciais evocados auditivos. O teste T de Student foi utilizado para a análise, considerando 5% de significância. Resultados: no Grupo 2, V e A apresentaram maior latência e menor amplitude e slope. O Grupo 2 também apresentou menores amplitudes de Na e Pa nas ondas A1C3 e A2C3. O Frequency-Following Response apresentou 93% de sensibilidade e especificidade, enquanto o Potencial Evocado Auditivo de Média Latência apresentou 87% de sensibilidade e 93% de especificidade. Conclusão: os indivíduos com alteração das habilidades auditivas apresentaram maior latência e menor amplitude de resposta no Frequency Following Response e Potencial Evocado Auditivo de Média Latência em relação aos indivíduos típicos. O Frequency-Following Response apresentou melhor equilíbrio de sensibilidade e especificidade.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to compare the latency and amplitude of the Frequency-Following Response and the Auditory Middle Latency Response in typical individuals and those with altered auditory abilities, as well as to investigate the sensitivity and specificity of both assessments in relation to central auditory processing. Methods: 32 individuals of both sexes were distributed into Group 1 (without altered auditory abilities) and Group 2 (with altered auditory abilities). The groups were divided according to behavioral tests of central auditory processing. Individuals in both groups underwent auditory evoked potentials. Student’s t-test was used for analysis, considering a 5% significance. Results: in Group 2, V and A had higher latency and lower amplitude and slope. Group 2 also had lower Na and Pa amplitudes in waves A1C3 and A2C3. The Frequency-Following Response showed 93% sensitivity and specificity, while the Auditory Middle Latency Response showed 87% sensitivity and 93% specificity. Conclusion: the individuals presented with altered hearing abilities showed higher latency and lower response amplitude in the Frequency Following Response and Auditory Middle Latency Response compared to typical individuals. The Frequency- Following Response showed a better balance of sensitivity and specificity.

RESUMO Objetivo Investigar os efeitos da suplementação antioxidante com extrato de açaí no incômodo com o zumbido crônico e a relação com os níveis de ansiedade e metabolismo oxidativo, não excluindo a sobreposição de enfermidades. Método Ensaio clínico, randomizado, controlado por placebo. Participaram 30 indivíduos, com média de 50,5 anos, 14 do sexo masculino e 16 do feminino, com limiares auditivos normais ou perda auditiva sensorioneural até grau leve bilateralmente, divididos em dois grupos: Grupo Placebo (sem ativo) e Grupo Açaí (100mg de extrato de açaí). Aplicaram-se os seguintes procedimentos antes e após três meses dos tratamentos: Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Inventário de Ansiedade de Beck (BAI) e amostras de sangue para avaliação de biomarcadores de estresse oxidativo (Peroxidação Lipídica e Carbonilação de proteínas). Resultados Houve redução do incômodo do zumbido para o grupo açaí, verificado por meio do THI (p=0,006). Diferenças significativas foram constatadas na pontuação dos sintomas comuns para os quadros de ansiedade no grupo placebo (p=0,016) porém, o mesmo não foi observado para os biomarcadores de metabolismo oxidativo, apesar de haver uma diminuição dos valores pós-tratamento para os grupos. Conclusão A suplementação antioxidante oral, com extrato de açaí, manifestou efeitos favoráveis no zumbido, reduzindo o desconforto com o sintoma, independente da etiologia de base, podendo ser considerada uma modalidade de tratamento. Entretanto, o efeito dessa suplementação nos sintomas de ansiedade e em biomarcadores de estresse oxidativo precisa de maior investigação.

ABSTRACT Purpose To investigate the effects of antioxidant supplementation with açaí extract on the discomfort with chronic tinnitus and the relationship with the levels of anxiety and oxidative metabolism, not excluding the overlap of diseases. Methods Randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial. 30 individuals participated, with an average of 50.5 years, 14 males and 16 females, with normal hearing thresholds or sensorineural hearing loss up to mild degree, divided into two groups: Placebo Group (without active) and, Açaí Group (100mg of açaí extract). The following procedures were applied before and after three months of treatments: Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Beck's Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and blood samples for evaluation of oxidative stress biomarkers (Lipid Peroxidation and Protein Carbonylation). Results There was a reduction in the discomfort of tinnitus for the açaí group verified through THI (p = 0.006). Significant differences were found in the score of common symptoms for anxiety disorders in the placebo group (p = 0.016), however, the same was not observed for oxidative metabolism biomarkers, although there was a decrease in post-treatment values for all groups. Conclusion Oral antioxidant supplementation, with açaí extract, showed favorable effects on tinnitus, reducing discomfort with the symptom, regardless of the underlying etiology, and can be considered a treatment modality. However, the effect of this supplementation on anxiety symptoms and oxidative stress biomarkers needs further investigation.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to describe and compare the performance of older adults with normal hearing and hearing impairments in mismatch negativity (MMN), correlate MMN with cognitive tasks and central auditory processing (CAP), and identify normal values for MMN in older adults. METHODS: This study had 54 participants. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to assess cognition and the random gap detection test (RGDT), dichotic digit test (DDT), and speech to noise (SN) test were used to evaluate CAP. MMN was elicited with the verbal stimulus /da/ (frequent) and /ta/ (rare), and the latency, amplitude, duration, and area were analyzed. RESULTS: When comparing the normal-hearing group to those with hearing loss, there was no significant difference in MMN. When correlating MMN with MoCA, RGDT, DDT, and the SN test, there was a weak correlation between the MMN amplitude and the RGDT and DDT. When comparing the MMN of participants with normal and altered cognitive aspects and those with normal and altered DDT, the MMN duration was found to be affected by the DDT. The mean latency value of the MMN in the normal-hearing group was 199.8 ms, the amplitude was -2.2 µV, area was 116.1 µV/ms, and duration was 81.2 ms. CONCLUSION: Mild hearing loss did not influence MMN. There was no correlation between MMN and cognitive aspects, and there were weak correlations with CAP. Alterations in CAP led to longer durations in MMN. Normal values for MMN in adults aged between 60 and 77 years were generated.

OBJECTIVES: To analyze central auditory maturation in term and preterm infants during the first 3 months of life by comparing the latency and amplitude of cortical auditory-evoked potential at different frequencies. METHODS: In this study, 17 term and 18 preterm infants were examined; all had tested positive on the neonatal hearing screening test. Cortical auditory potential was investigated during the first and third months of life. The response of the cortical auditory-evoked potential was investigated at frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 Hz. The latency and amplitude of the cortical response were automatically detected and manually analyzed by three researchers with experience in electrophysiology. The results were compared using analysis of variance and the Bonferroni test. A significance level of 5% was used for all analyses. RESULTS: Latency values of cortical auditory-evoked potential in the first month of birth were significantly higher than those in the third month, and latency values of the preterm group were higher than those of the term group, regardless of the frequency and time of evaluation. In general, the latency of the cortical auditory-evoked potential was higher at high frequencies. Amplitude values in the third month of life were significantly higher than those in the first month for term and preterm infants. CONCLUSION: Central auditory maturation was observed in both groups but with different results between those born at term and preterm, with latencies of cortical auditory-evoked potential higher for the preterm group and at high frequencies.

RESUMO O objetivo do trabalho foi criar um protocolo de treinamento auditivo e cognitivo para idosos e analisar a sua eficácia. O estudo foi realizado em três etapas: (1) seleção de materiais, compreendendo materiais existentes e outros confeccionados pelos autores; (2) análise de juízes especialistas, para consenso quanto às habilidades avaliadas e tipo de treinamento; (3) aplicação do protocolo em um caso clínico, com realização de uma bateria de testes para avaliação pré e pós-intervenção, consistindo em avaliação cognitiva e auditiva (comportamental e eletrofisiológica). Foi possível a estruturação do protocolo de acordo com as sugestões das juízas especialistas, o que gerou uma nova proposta de treinamento auditivo e cognitivo com 39 tarefas, dispostas em seis sessões. Com a aplicação do protocolo no caso clínico, observaram-se modificações positivas nos dois aspectos treinados. A nova proposta terapêutica foi concluída e aplicada. O sujeito do caso clínico obteve melhoras pós-intervenção e a eficácia foi verificada por meio dos testes comportamentais de processamento auditivo central, de rastreio cognitivo e do potencial evocado auditivo de longa latência.

ABSTRACT The objective of the work was create an auditory and cognitive training protocol for the elderly and to analyze its effectiveness. This study was carried out in three stages: (1) Selection of materials, composed of existing materials and others made by the authors, (2) Analysis of expert judges, for consensus regarding the assessed skills and type of training, and (3) Application of the protocol in a clinical case, with a battery of tests for pre-and post-intervention, composed of cognitive and auditory assessment (behavioral and electrophysiological). It was possible to structure the protocol according to the suggestions of the expert judges, which generated a new proposal for auditory and cognitive training with 39 tasks arranged in six sessions. With the application of the protocol in the clinical case, it was possible to observe positive changes in both trained aspects. The new therapeutic proposal has been completed and applied. The clinical case has shown improvement after the intervention, and the effectiveness was verified through behavioral tests of central auditory processing, cognitive screening, and long-latent auditory evoked potential.

Resumo Introdução: A investigação do nível mínimo de resposta auditiva cortical tem sido alvo de diferentes estudos em adultos. Devido a questões de maturação, pouco se sabe sobre essas respostas em recém-nascidos. Com o avanço tecnológico, dispositivos de análise automática surgiram com o objetivo de retomar essa avaliação em populações específicas. Assim, novos estudos são necessários para verificar a viabilidade do uso desse potencial auditivo na obtenção de níveis mínimos de respostas na criança. Objetivo: Verificar e comparar latência e amplitude em 80 dBnNA e o nível mínimo de resposta auditiva cortical em recém-nascidos a termo e pré-termo. Método: Estudo transversal, comparativo, envolvendo 59 neonatos, 35 nascidos a termo e 24 pré-termos, com resultados positivos na triagem auditiva neonatal. O sistema Hearlab foi utilizado para investigar o potencial auditivo P1i com estímulo tone burst nas frequências de 500, 1000, 2000 e 4000 Hz. A busca do nível mínimo de resposta variou de 80 a 0 dBNA e foi detectado automaticamente. Os resultados foram comparados entre os grupos, avaliando a latência e amplitude em 80 dBNA e o nível mínimo de resposta auditiva cortical. Resultados: Os valores médios obtidos para o nível mínimo de resposta auditiva cortical no grupo nascido a termo foram 26 ± 8,81; 26,14 ± 6,97; 29 ± 7,65 e 29,43 ± 7,04 dBNA e para recém-nascidos pré-termos foram de 31,96 ± 10,41; 34,13 ± 11,34; 33,64 ± 11,03 e 37,73 ± 11,92 dBNA, para as frequências de 500, 1000, 2000 e 4000 Hz, respectivamente. Houve diferenc¸a entre os grupos para a latência de P1i em 4000 Hz e os níveis mínimos de resposta em 500, 1000 e 4000 Hz, com valores maiores em Pré-termos. Conclusão: Foi possível obter valores de latência e amplitude em 80 dBnNA e o nível mínimo de resposta cortical em recém-nascidos a termo e Pré-termos, com resultados diferentes entre osgrupos, com valores maiores em pré-termos.

Abstract Introduction: The study of the threshold level of cortical auditory response in adults has been investigated in previous studies. Due to maturational issues, little is known about these responses in neonates. Technological advances with automatic analysis devices now allow investigation in specific populations. Thus, new studies are needed to establish the feasibility of using this auditory potential to identify the lowest levels of responses in children. Objective: Verify and compare latency and amplitude in 80 dBnNA and the minimum level of cortical auditory response in term and preterm neonates. Methods: A cross-sectional, comparative study involving 59 neonates, 35 full-term births and 24 preterm births, with positive results in the Neonatal Hearing Screening. The Hearlab system was used to investigate the P1i auditory potential with tone burst stimulus at frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz. The minimum response level search ranged from 80 to 0 dBNA and was detected automatically. The results were compared between groups, evaluating the latency and amplitude in 80 dBNA and the minimum level of cortical auditory response. Results: The mean values obtained for the minimum level of cortical auditory response in term group were 26 ± 8.81; 26.14 ± 6.97; 29 ± 7.65 and 29.43 ± 7.04 dBNA and for preterm neonates of 31.96 ± 10.41; 34.13 ± 11.34; 33.64 ± 11.03 and 37.73 ± 11.92 dBNA, for the frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz, respectively. There was a difference between groups for the latency of P1i at 4000 Hz and the minimum response levels at 500, 1000 and 4000 Hz, with higher values for preterm infants. Conclusion: It was possible to obtain latency and amplitude values at 80 dBnNA and the minimum level of cortical response in term and preterm newborns, with different results between groups, with higher values in those born preterm.

Abstract Introduction Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a long latency auditory evoked potential, represented by a negative wave, generated after the potential N1 and visualized in a resulting wave. Objective To identify the time of occurrence ofMMNafter N1, elicited with verbal and nonverbal stimuli. Methods Ninety individuals aged between 18 and 56 years old participated in the study, 39 of whom were male and 51 female, with normal auditory thresholds, at least 8 years of schooling, and who did not present auditory processing complaints. All of them underwent audiologic anamnesis, visual inspection of external auditory meatus, pure tone audiometry, speech audiometry, acoustic immittance measures and the dichotic sentence identification test as a screening for alterations in auditory processing, a requirement to participate in the sample. The MMN was applied with two different stimuli, with these being da/ta (verbal) and 750 Hz and 1,000 Hz (nonverbal). Results There was a statistically significant difference between the latency values of the N1 potential and the MMN with the two stimuli, as well as between the MMN with verbal and nonverbal stimuli, and the latency of the MMN elicited with da/ta being greater than that elicited with 750 Hz and 1,000 Hz, which facilitated its visualization. Conclusion The time of occurrence of MMN after the N1 elicited with verbal stimuli was 100.4 ms and with nonverbal stimuli 85.5ms. Thus, the marking of the MMN with verbal stimuli proved to bemore distant from N1 compared with the nonverbal stimuli.

Abstract Introduction The mismatch negativity (MMN) is a long-latency auditory evoked potential related to a passive elicited auditory event. Objective To verify the occurrence of MMN with different stimuli, to describe reference values in normal-hearing adults with verbal and nonverbal stimuli and to compare them with each other, besides analyzing the latency, area, and amplitude regarding gender and between the ears. Method Normal-hearing individuals, aged between 18 and 59 years old, participated in the study. As inclusion criterion in the study, all of them underwent tone threshold audiometry, logoaudiometry, tympanometry, and the Dichotic Sentence Identification (DSI) test, and later the MMN with 4 different stimuli, being 2 verbal (da/ta and ba/di) and 2 nonverbal stimuli (750/1,000Hz and 750/4,000Hz), which are considered stimuli with low and high contrast. Results A total of 90 individuals composed the sample, being 39 males and 51 females, with an average age of 26.9 years old. In the analysis of the latency, amplitude, and area of the four stimuli between the ears, they were not considered statistically different. There was a significant difference between all of the stimuli in terms of latency, amplitude and area, with the highest latency found in da/ta, and the greatest amplitude and area in ba/di. Regarding gender, there was only difference in the latency of the da/ta stimulus. Conclusion The da/ta and 750/1,000Hz stimuli elicited the most MMN in the population of normal-hearing adults. Among the genders, there was difference only regarding the latency of the verbal stimulus da/ta, and there was no difference between the ears.

RESUMO Objetivos: gerar valores de referência para diferentes testes comportamentais de processamento auditivo central (PAC) em adultos normo-ouvintes, com estratificação de faixa etária, assim como, comparar os resultados segundo a variável presença ou ausência de transtorno do PAC(TPAC). Métodos: a casuística foi composta por 94 adultos normo-ouvintes, com pelo menos 11 anos de escolaridade, os quais foram distribuídos em dois grupos, conforme o desempenho nos testes de Identificação de Sentenças Dicóticas(DSI), Masking Level Difference(MLD), Randon Gap Detection Test(RGDT), Fala Comprimida Adaptado(FCA) e Testes de Padrão de Duração e Frequência(TPD/TPF). Os 64 sujeitos que apresentaram normalidade em todos os testes formaram o G1 e os 30 sujeitos com alteração em pelo menos um deles originaram o G2. Foi realizada uma descrição com valores de média, desvio padrão (DP), mínima, máxima e intervalo de confiança. Posteriormente, foi utilizado o teste não paramétrico de comparação entre variáveis U de Mann-Whitney. Em todas as análises foi considerado nível de significância de 5% (p≤0,05). Resultados: o somatório de dois desvios padrões ao desempenho médio do G1, originou valores de referência para os diferentes testes abordados. Quando comparados os grupos G1 e G2, o G1 apresentou melhores resultados, sendo esta significante nos testes DSI(orelha esquerda), MLD,RGDT,TPD e TPF para a faixa etária entre 18 e 29 anos e, DSI(orelha esquerda), RGDT e FCA(orelha direita) na faixa etária de 30 a 58 anos. Conclusão: foi possível gerar valores de referência para diferentes testes comportamentais de PAC, em adultos normo-ouvintes, assim como, constatar um melhor desempenho para o grupo com ausência de TPAC.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to generate reference values for different behavioral central auditory processing (CAP) tests in normally hearing adults, with age stratification, as well as to compare the results, according to the presence or absence of CAP disorder (CAPD). Methods: the study sample consisted of 94 adults with normal auditory thresholds, with at least 11 years of schooling, who were divided into two groups, according to the performance in the Dichotic Sentences Identification Test (DSI), Masking Level Difference (MLD), Random Gap Detection Test (RGDT), Adapted Time-Compressed Speech (ATCS) and Duration and Frequency Pattern Tests (DPT/FPT).The 64 subjects who presented normality in all the tests formed the G1 group and the 30 subjects who presented alteration in at least one of them, originated the G2 group. To accomplish the analysis it was used the Mann-Whitney U Test. In all analyzes, the significance level was 5% (p≤0.05). Results: the sum of the two standard deviations for the mean performance of G1 yielded reference values for the different tests addressed. When G1 and G2 groups were compared, G1 presented better results, this being significant in the DSI (left ear), MLD, RGDT, DPT and FPT tests, for the group aged between 18 and 29 years and, DSI (right ear), RGDT and ATCS (right ear), for the group from 30 to 58 years. Conclusion: it was possible to generate reference values for different behavioral tests of CAP in normally hearing adults, as well as to verify a better performance for the group with no CAPD.

RESUMO Objetivo avaliar a influência da variável sexo nos valores da latência e amplitude da onda V do potencial evocado auditivo de tronco encefálico, com diferentes estímulos em neonatos. Métodos participaram deste estudo 62 neonatos nascidos a termo (29 do sexo feminino e 33 do sexo masculino). Realizou-se a pesquisa de limiar eletrofisiológico do potencial evocado auditivo de tronco encefálico com quatro estímulos diferentes (clique, Ichirp banda larga-BL, tone burst e Ichirp-frequência específica-FE), nas intensidades de 60, 40 e 20 dBnNA. A variável sexo foi comparada para cada estímulo e intensidade. Resultados os resultados obtidos demonstraram menor latência e maior amplitude no sexo feminino para o estímulo clique. Entretanto, para o estímulo tone burst, o sexo feminino apresentou maior latência e maior amplitude. Quando utilizados os estímulos Ichirp-BL e Ichirp-FE, a variável sexo não apresentou diferença estatisticamente significativa para os valores de latência e amplitude. Conclusão a onda V do PEATE de neonatos sofre influência da variável sexo, quando utilizados os estímulos clique e tone burst. Entretanto, não houve tal influência quando utilizado o estímulo Ichirp banda larga–BL e o estímulo Ichirp frequência específica-FE.

ABSTRACT Purpose To evaluate the influence of gender on the brainstem auditory evoked potentials V-wave latency and amplitude values in newborns, with different stimuli. Methods 62 full-term newborns (29 females and 33 males) participated in this study. The electrophysiological threshold of the brainstem auditory evoked potential was investigated with four different stimuli – click, broadband (BB) Ichirp, tone-burst, and specific-frequency (SF) Ichirp –, in intensities of 60, 40 and 20 dBnHL. The genders were compared in each stimulus and intensity. Results The results obtained showed lower latency and greater amplitude in females for the click stimulus. However, for tone-burst, the females presented higher latency and greater amplitude. When the BB-Ichirp and SF-Ichirp stimuli were used, the gender did not present a statistically significant difference in the latency and amplitude values. Conclusion The BAEP V-wave in newborns is influenced by gender when the click and tone-burst stimuli are used. However, such influence was not noted when the BB-Ichirp and SF-Ichirp stimuli were used.

Abstract Introduction Frequency-following response with speech stimulus (FFR-speech) is a subcortical potential that satisfactorily evaluates the processing of verbal information. However, there still are differences in the literature regarding its analysis and stimulation protocol. Objective To compare two stimulation protocols for the capture of FFR-speech, to identify the percentage of occurrence of the waves among them and to compare it with the specialized literature, as well as to describe the interpeaks of its waves. Method Considering the eligibility criteria, the sample consisted of 30 normal-hearing adults, with no complaints of speech comprehension. All of themwere submitted to a basic audiological evaluation, to brainstem auditory evoked potential with click stimulus, and to FFR-speech. In the latter, 2 types of stimulation were performed, 3 series of 1,000 sweeps, and 2 series of 3,000 sweeps, for subsequent analysis of the resulting wave, in which we tried to mark the peak V followed by valleys A, C, D, E, F, and O. Results Differences in latency and interpeaks were not found between the protocols. In general, a higher occurrence of waves in the stimulation of 2 series of 3,000 sweeps was observed, but only the A valley presented a significant difference. When the values of the waves were compared with the literature, the V and A waves showed fewer occurrences in the present study. Conclusion The protocol of 2 series of 3,000 sweeps was better for FFR-speech in the studied equipment, considering the higher occurrence of waves, even though it is inferior to the specialized literature. Furthermore, it was possible to describe interpeak values and to observe no difference between the studied protocols
