Abstract The organic geochemistry of organic-rich facies including shales, marls, and carbonates (Assistência Member) of the Irati Formation, Paraná Basin, Brazil, were analyzed to evaluate the thermal effects of igneous intrusions upon the kerogen present in these facies. Total organic carbon (TOC) content and hydrocarbon source potential (S2) of the Irati source rocks range from 0.03 to 20.4% and 0.01 to 112.1 mg HC/g rock, respectively, indicating excellent potential as a source for hydrocarbon generation. Hydrogen index (HI) values reveal that the kerogen is predominantly type I (HI: up to 892.6 mg HC/g TOC) and, therefore, an oil source, except for samples having low TOC content due to severe maturation caused by the heat from diabase intrusions. The thickness of igneous intrusions in the 64 wells investigated in this study ranged from 2 to 231 m. They clearly had a major impact on TOC, HI, and S2 values, which decrease in the vicinity of intrusions, indicating a gradual increase in maturation toward the igneous body. In wells without the influence of igneous intrusions, Tmax values of Rock-Eval pyrolysis and %Ro indicate that the organic matter is immature for the generation of hydrocarbons.

Abstract The objective of this work was to evaluate the paleodepositional conditions and potential for the hydrocarbons generation of the outcropping shales in the Southern Compartment of the Recôncavo Basin, indicative of the Candeias and Maracangalha Formations (Lower Cretaceous), from the organic geochemical characterization and analysis of palinofacies. For this, 23 samples of outcrops were collected near the cities of Santo Amaro, São Francisco do Conde and Simões Filho, State of Bahia, Brazil. All samples were analyzed for total organic carbon (TOC), total sulfur, insoluble residue, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, whole oil chromatography, stable isotopes of oxygen, organic and inorganic carbon, saturated biomarkers and palynofacies, performed at the Center of Excellence in Geochemistry of the Institute of Geosciences of the Universidade Federal da Bahia (Lepetro), Brazil. The parameters provided by the geochemical analyzes indicate significant differences between the outcrops under study, mainly regarding the quantity and the quality of the organic matter, thus configuring a difference in the conditions of production and preservation of the organic matter during the time of deposition of the shales. There are layers rich in organic carbon, containing well-preserved type I kerogen, indicating anoxic depositional conditions. In contrast, poor layers of organic content, containing residual kerogen (type IV), occur, reflecting oxidizing conditions of the depositional environment. The observed differences suggest that the variability of the geochemical properties of the organic matter reflects the climatic variations occurred during the deposition of the sediments of the Candeias and Maracangalha Formations. As a consequence, there are levels with potential for generation and levels with no potential for hydrocarbon generation.

Eight petroleum samples from Potiguar Basin were submitted for determination of saturated biomarkers by gas chromatography (fingerprint), liquid chromatography (saturates, aromatics, resins and asphaltenes), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), nickel and vanadium by high resolution continuum source graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry (HR-CS GF AAS). The geochemical parameters provided information on type of depositional paleoenvironment in which organic matter that gave rise to each oil sample and level of thermal maturation reached by generating rocks that make up the Potiguar Basin were deposited. The relationships between the stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and between Ni and V concentrations of each petroleum sample were also evaluated. The evaluations separated for oil samples into two distinct groups. Group 1 formed by samples P1, P2, P5 and P8, with characteristics of generating rock that was deposited in a marine hypersaline environment. Group 2 composed of samples P3, P4, P6 and P7 with freshwater lacustrine depositional paleoenvironment, which were elucidated through the geochemical parameters studied. The hierarchical cluster analysis was presented as promising chemometric tool for characterization of petroleum samples in the according to their origin of the generating rock by ratio parameters of hopane/sterane , tetracyclic polyiprenoids/diastereomers and diastereos R+S/cholestane R+S.

Nesse trabalho, 14 dos hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos (HPA) incluídos pelo Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) na lista de poluentes prioritários foram analisados através de cromatografia gasosa com espectrometria de massas acoplada (GC-MS). A amostragem das águas superficiais foi realizada no estuário do rio Paraguaçu e do rio Jaguaripe (Bahia), nordeste do Brasil. Concentrações totais de HPAs variaram de 0,0029 a 0,1079 ng/L em águas superficiais (rios principais, afluentes), com valor médio de 0,0344 ng/L. Tais concentrações podem ser tomadas como valores-base para a região estudada. Os perfis de HPAs foram dominados por HPAs de baixo peso molecular (dois ou três anéis de componentes) em amostras de água superficial. Isto é indicativo de sua origem a partir de óleo ou contaminação residual (entrada petrogênica). Os dados recolhidos mostram que entrada petrogênica foi predominante em quase todas as estações investigadas. Para discriminar diferenças e semelhanças entre as amostras, a análise de componente principal (ACP) foi realizada utilizando uma matriz de correlação. A ACP revelou as relações entre todas as águas superficiais das estações investigadas.

Fourteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) included in the US Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) priority pollutant list were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC--MS). Surface water sampling was undertaken in the Paraguaçu Estuary (Bahia), northern Brazil. Total PAH concentrations varied from 0.0029 to 0.1079 ng/L in the surface waters (main rivers, tributaries) with a mean value of 0.0344 ng/L. Such concentrations can be taken as background values for the studied region. The PAH profiles were dominated by low molecular weight PAHs (two- and three-ring components) in surface water samples. It indicated that PAHs in surface water may have its origin from oil or sewage contamination (petrogenic input). The collected data showed that petrogenic input was predominant at almost all the stations investigated. To discriminate pattern differences and similarities among the samples, a principal component analysis (PCA) was performed using a correlation matrix. PCA revealed the latent relationships among all the surface water from the investigated stations.
