Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing levels of spineless cactus (SC) [Nopalea cochenillifera (L.) Salm Dyck] on nutrient intake, ingestive behaviour, and performance of lambs in a feedlot. Thirty-two male (non-castrated) Santa Inês lambs with a mean initial body weight (BW) of 20.4 ± 2.60 kg were distributed across four levels of spineless cactus: zero, 24, 52, and 75% of total diet dry matter (DM). Over 56 days, the animals had their intake and performance monitored. The inclusion of SC influenced (p<0.05) in a quadratic way the dry matter intake and total digestible nutrients, but linearly decreased (p<0.05) the neutral detergent fiber intake. Drinking water intake decreased linearly (p<0.05) with the inclusion of SC in the diet. The inclusion of SC influenced (p<0.05) in a quadratic way the digestibility of organic matter in the diet. The increase in the level of SC in the diet increased linearly (p<0.05) the feeding and rumination efficiencies of the lambs. The maximum daily gain of 0.237 kg/day was achieved with 44% SC in the diet. It is recommended to include up to 40% of spineless cactus in the diet of lambs.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o valor nutritivo de silagens de genótipos anões e altos de capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum), consorciados ou não à cunhã (Clitoria ternatea). O experimento foi realizado em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial 4x2 (quatro genótipos × dois sistemas de plantio). Os genótipos consorciados ou não à cunhã foram: IRI-381 e Elefante B, de porte alto; e Taiwan A-146 2.37 e Mott, anões. A forragem foi colhida após 60 dias de rebrota. Na silagem do capim Mott consorciado à cunhã, foram observados menores teores de lignina (78,1 g kg-1), fibra em detergente neutro (636,0 g kg-1) e proteína insolúvel em detergente neutro (13,15 g kg-1), além de maior recuperação da matéria seca (873,3 g kg-1). A silagem de Taiwan A-146 2.37 cultivado em consórcio com a leguminosa apresentou maior teor de proteína bruta (136,1 g kg-1). Em ambas as silagens, os teores de nitrogênio amoniacal foram bastante reduzidos (26,4 g kg-1). No entanto, maiores teores residuais de carboidratos solúveis em água foram observados nas silagens do consórcio (1,85 mg g-1) e do capim Mott em monocultivo (1,51 mg g-1). Além disso, houve menor digestibilidade in vitro da matéria seca (676,7 g kg-1) na silagem do consórcio. Os genótipos anões aumentam o valor nutricional da silagem de capim-elefante, comparados aos de porte alto. O consórcio com a cunhã melhora as características fermentativas da silagem, apesar de reduzir a sua digestibilidade. Portanto, a ensilagem do capim anão Mott consorciado à cunhã apresenta resultados mais promissores.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the nutritional value of silages from tall-sized and dwarf elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) genotypes, intercropped or not with butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea). The experiment was performed in randomized complete blocks, in a 4x2 factorial arrangement (four genotypes × two cropping systems). The genotypes intercropped or not with butterfly pea were: IRI-381 and Elephant B, tall sized; and Taiwan A-146 2.37 and Mott, dwarf. Forage was harvested 60 days after regrowth. In the silage from Mott grass intercropped with butterfly pea, lower contents of lignin (78.1 g kg-1), neutral detergent fiber (636.0 g kg-1), and neutral detergent insoluble protein (13.15 g kg-1), besides a greater dry matter recovery (873.3 g kg-1), were observed. The silage from Taiwan A-146 2.37 intercropped with the legume showed a greater crude protein content (136.1 g kg-1). In both silages, the ammonia nitrogen contents were quite reduced (26.4 g kg-1). However, greater residual water-soluble carbohydrate contents were observed in the silages from the intercrop (1.85 mg g-1) and from the Mott grass monocrop (1.51 mg g-1). Moreover, there was a lower in vitro dry matter digestibility (676.7 g kg-1) for the silage from the intercrop. Dwarf genotypes increase the nutritional value of elephant grass silage, compared with the tall-sized ones. Intercropping with butterfly pea improves silage fermentation characteristics, despite reducing its digestibility. Therefore, the ensilage of dwarf Mott elephant grass intercropped with butterfly pea shows more promising results.

ABSTRACT In semi-arid zones, feedlots are considered a tool to minimize the impacts of seasonal forage on the production of sheep meat in the tropics. However, the use of alternative tropical ingredients as substitutes for corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) meal in formulations of confined sheep diets is recurrent. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of diets containing corn and soybean meal (CS), corn (CU), cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) root (CRU) or spineless cactus (Opuntia ficus-indica [L.] Mill., SCU) associated with urea on the performance, carcass characteristics and meat quality of confined lambs. Forty non-castrated Santa Inês sheep with average age of 150 d and average initial weight of 22.6 ± 2.3 kg were confined in individual pens for 76 d and slaughtered. The diets effects were contrasted by Tukey test. Empty body weight was different among the treatments (P < 0.05) and was 27.3, 25.3, 23.0 and 21.1 kg for the animals fed CS, CU, CRU and SCU, respectively. CS diet presented higher cold carcass weights while SCU diet presented lower cold carcass weights (P < 0.05) (11.37 kg) and higher cooling losses. Luminosity, yellow color intensity and meat moisture content were higher (P < 0.05) in SCU than CS. Liver, skin and internal fat weights were similar (P > 0.05) in CU and CRU, but higher (P < 0.05) than SCU. The replacement of corn and soybean meal for different carbohydrate sources associated with urea reduces the body weight components in confined sheep.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar morfologicamente genótipos de capim-elefante (Pennisetum purpureum) e estimar as proporções de tecido de suas lâminas foliares, sob pastejo. Duas variedades altas (Elefante B e IRI-381) e três baixas (Mott, Taiwan A-146 2.37 e Taiwan A-146 2.114) foram avaliadas sob pastejo intermitente de ovelhas quanto às seguintes variáveis morfológicas: altura de planta, comprimento de entrenós e razão entre lâminas foliares e colmos. Além disso, foram estimadas as proporções dos seguintes tecidos da lâmina foliar: esclerênquima, epidermes adaxial e abaxial, células buliformes, feixes vasculares, floema, bainha vascular, xilema e mesófilo. As variedades baixas foram 28,6% menores do que as altas e apresentaram maiores razões entre lâminas foliares e colmos; Mott e Taiwan A-146 2.114 tiveram os menores entrenós de 3,9 e 4,7 cm, respectivamente, ao longo de dez ciclos de pastejo. Os clones diferiram quanto às proporções de tecidos da sua lâmina foliar, exceto para epiderme abaxial, floema e xilema. As diferenças nas características morfológicas indicam que os clones baixos Mott e Taiwan A-146 2.114 são melhores adaptados ao pastejo por ovelhas e, portanto, podem ser recomendados para o melhoramento de pastagens.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to characterize morphologically elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) genotypes and to estimate their proportions of leaf blade tissues under grazing. Two tall varieties (Elephant B and IRI-381) and three short ones (Mott, Taiwan A-146 2.37, and Taiwan A-146 2.114) were evaluated under intermittent sheep grazing as to the following morphological characteristics: plant height, internode length, and leaf blade/culm ratio. Moreover, the proportions of the following leaf blade tissues were estimated: sclerenchyma, adaxial and abaxial epidermis, bulliform cells, vascular bundles, phloem, vascular sheath, xylem, and mesophyll. The short varieties were 28.6% shorter than the tall ones and showed higher leaf blade/culm ratio; Mott and Taiwan A-146 2.114 had the shortest internodes of 3.9 and 4.7 cm, respectively, over ten grazing cycles. The clones differed regarding their proportions of leaf blade tissues, except for abaxial epidermis, phloem, and xylem. The differences in morphological characteristics indicate that the short clones Mott and Taiwan A-146 2.114 are better adapted to sheep grazing, and, therefore, may be recommended for the improvement of pastures.

Resumen En la región semiárida del nordeste de Brasil, las plantas nativas son una fuente importante de forraje. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar las características químicas de los henos de las leguminosas arbustivas nativas: sabiá (Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth.) y mororó [Bauhinia cheilantha (Bong.) Steud.], utilizando diferentes fracciones de las plantas: solo hojas y hojas más ramificaciones delgadas (<8 mm diámetro) de tallos. Los análisis incluyeron: concentraciones de materia seca (MS), proteína cruda (PC), fibra detergente neutra (FDN), extracto de éter (EE), ceniza, nutrientes digestibles totales (NDT) y carbohidratos no fibrosos (CNF). El heno de hojas de sabiá presentó mayor concentración de PC (182 g/kg de MS) que el heno de hojas de mororó (126 g/kg de MS); no obstante en ambas leguminosas las concentraciones de PC fueron similares cuando se analizaron hojas más ramificaciones de tallos (106 g/kg de MS en promedio). Las concentraciones de FDN (368 g/kg de MS), CNF (418 g/kg de MS) y NDT (481 g/kg de MS) del heno de hojas de mororó fueron superiores a las del heno de hojas de sabiá (465, 258 y 311 g/kg de MS, respectivamente). Los resultados sugieren que en la región semiárida de Brasil estas leguminosas nativas, conservadas como heno durante el período de crecimiento, pueden proporcionar un alimento suplementario de aceptable valor nutritivo durante el período de baja disponibilidad y calidad de forraje. Sin embargo, se necesitan muestreos adicionales de un rango de fases de crecimiento de las plantas y sitios tanto para confirmar estos resultados preliminares como para proporcionar datos sobre producción de MS. Además se requieren estudios de alimentación con rumiantes para evaluar el efecto de los henos en la producción animal.

Abstract Native forages are important feed sources in the northeastern semi-arid region of Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical characteristics of hays made from the native shrub legumes, sabiá (Mimosa caesalpiniifolia Benth.) and mororó [Bauhinia cheilantha (Bong.) Steud.], using different plant fractions: leaves only and leaves plus twigs. Analyses carried out were: concentrations of dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), ether extract (EE), ash, total digestible nutrients (TDN) and non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC). Sabiá leaf hay contained greater CP concentration (182 g/kg DM) than mororó leaf hay (126 g/kg DM) but hay made from leaf plus twigs showed similar CP for both legumes (mean 106 g/kg DM). Concentrations of NDF (368 g/kg DM), NFC (418 g/kg DM) and TDN (481 g/kg DM) of mororó leaf hay were superior to those of sabiá leaf hay (465, 258 and 311 g/kg DM, respectively). The findings suggest that these native legumes can be conserved as hay during the growing season to provide a supplementary feed with acceptable nutritive value for feeding during the period of inadequate feed availability and quality in semi-arid Brazil. However, more samples from a range of growth stages and locations are needed to confirm these preliminary findings and to provide data on possible yields, while more feeding studies with ruminants are needed to confirm the preliminary data in terms of liveweight performance.

Resumen Antecedentes: la alta producción de mango asociado con una gestión inadecuada durante la producción y pos-cosecha, resulta en un aumento de los residuos en el medio ambiente. Debido a que el mango es una fruta rica en carbohidratos (fuente de energía) es posible su utilización en la alimentación de los animales. Objetivo: evaluar el efecto de la sustitución de maíz con harina integral de mango (0, 330, 660 y 1000 g/Kg en base a materia seca) en las dietas de cabras lecheras sobre la cinética de fermentación ruminal, consumo, producción y composición láctea y evaluación económica de las dietas. Métodos: ocho cabras Saanen mestizas en lactación (48,7 ± 1,99 Kg de peso corporal) fueron utilizadas en el experimento desde el día 48 hasta el día 124 de lactancia. Se utilizó un diseño experimental doble cuadrado latino (4×4) con cuatro tratamientos, cuatro períodos y cuatro animales. Resultados: se observó una reducción (p<0,05) en la producción y volumen de gas de los carbohidratos totales y carbohidratos fibrosos. La sustitución de maíz con harina de mango integral no mostró ningún efecto sobre el consumo de materia seca (1890 g/d), proteína bruta (278 g/d) y fibra detergente neutra (959 g/d). La producción de leche (corregida al 4% de grasa) y su composición no fueron afectadas por los tratamientos, excepto para el contenido de grasa y ácido graso miristoleico. La evaluación económica mostró una reducción en el costo total de la alimentación y una mejor relación costo:beneficio. Conclusión: se recomienda sustituir el maíz por la harina de mango integral en hasta 330 g/Kg en las dietas de cabras lecheras.

Summary Background: the high volume of mangos harvested during the season, associated with inappropriate management of the fruit after harvesting results in increased waste of this valuable resource. Mango fruit, rich in carbohydrates, has potential use in animal feeding. Objective: to evaluate the effect of replacing corn with whole mango meal (0, 330, 660, and 1000 g/Kg on dry matter basis) in the diets of dairy goats on rumen fermentation kinetics, intake, milk yield and composition, and economic results. Methods: eight lactating Saanen crossbred goats (48.7 ± 1.99 Kg body weight) were used in the experiment, which started 48 days postpartum and lasted until completing 124 days of lactation. The experimental design consisted of a double Latin square (4×4) with four treatments, four periods and four animals per square. Results: a reduction (p<0.05) was observed in gas production from total carbohydrates and fiber carbohydrates. Replacement of corn with whole mango meal showed no effect on DM intake (1,890 g/d), crude protein (278 g/d) and neutraldetergent fiber (959 g/d). Milk production (4% fat-corrected) and milk composition were not affected by the treatments, except for fat and myristoleic fatty acid contents. The economic evaluation showed a reduction in the total feeding cost and a better benefit:cost ratio. Conclusion: whole mango meal can replace corn up to 330 g/Kg in the diet of lactating goats.

Resumo Antecedentes: a elevada produção de manga associada a um manejo inadequado durante a produção e pós- colheita, resulta em aumento de resíduos no ambiente. Por ser uma fruta rica em carboidratos (fonte de energia) é possível a sua utilização na alimentação animal. Objetivo: avaliar o efeito da substituição do milho pelo farelo de manga integral (0, 330, 660 e 1000 g/Kg na matéria seca) na dieta de cabras leiteiras sobre a cinética de fermentação ruminal, consumo, produção e composição do leite, e também avaliação econômica das dietas. Métodos: oito cabras mestiças Saanen em lactação (48,7 ± 1,99 Kg de peso corporal) foram introduzidas no experimento 48 dias pós-parto e mantidas até 124 dias de lactação. Foi utilizado um delineamento em duplo quadrado Latino (4×4), com quatro tratamentos, quatro períodos e quatro animais por quadrado. Resultados: houve redução (p<0,05) na produção máxima de gás a partir dos carboidratos totais e o volume de gás produzido a partir de carboidratos fibrosos. A substituição do milho pelo farelo de manga integral não mostrou nenhum efeito sobre o consumo de matéria seca (1890 g/d), proteína bruta (278 g/d) e fibra em detergente neutro (959 g/d). A produção de leite corrigida para 4% de gordura e a composição do leite não foram afetadas pelos tratamentos, com exceção do teor de gordura e o ácido graxo miristoleico. A avaliação econômica mostrou uma redução no custo total da alimentação e uma melhor relação custo:benefício. Conclusão: recomenda-se substituir o milho pelo farelo de manga integral até 330 g/Kg na dieta de cabras leiteiras.

RESUMO Avaliou-se o efeito da suplementação alimentar 0,4; 0,8 e 1,2% do peso corporal (PC) sobre o desempenho de caprinos mestiços terminados em pasto de caatinga, em relação a caprinos mestiços não suplementados (0,0% do PC). Utilizou-se 32 caprinos machos castrados, mestiços Anglonubiana, com oito meses de idade e peso corporal médio de 18 ± 2,5 kg, distribuídos em delineamento de blocos casualizados, mantidos em 37 hectares de caatinga, das 7 h às 16 h. O consumo de matéria seca, matéria orgânica, proteína bruta, extrato etéreo, fibra em detergente neutro e ácido, carboidrato totais e nutrientes digestíveis totais foram influenciados (P<0,05) pelos níveis de suplementação alimentar, com acréscimos lineares de, 202,31; 179,42; 25,05; 11,83; 35,79; 12,27, 142,63 e 166,79 g animal-1 dia-1, respectivamente. Houve efeito substitutivo (P<0,05) do consumo de matéria seca a partir de 0,7% PC. A suplementação alimentar resultou em efeito linear positivo (P<0,05) sobre a digestibilidade da matéria seca, matéria orgânica, proteína bruta, extrato etéreo, carboidratos totais, teor de nutrientes digestíveis totais e energia digestível, com acréscimos de, 17,15; 16,64; 19,07; 44,74; 15,15 e 17,56 % na matéria seca; e 0,69 Mcal kg-1 de matéria seca, respectivamente. O peso corporal final, ganho total e ganho médio diário, elevaram-se linearmente (P<0,05) em 2,60; 3,09 e 0,036 kg por unidade percentual do nível de suplementação. A suplementação alimentar eleva o consumo e digestibilidade de matéria seca total e dos nutrientes, fato que possibilita maior desempenho, com recomendação para utilização até o nível de 0,7% PC para evitar efeito de substituição.

SUMMARY It was evaluated the effect of feed supplementation at 0.4; 0.8 and 1.2% of body weight (BW) on intake and digestibility of crossbred goats finished on caatinga, in relation to crossbred goats not supplemented (0.0% of BW). Thirty-two crossbred, Anglo-Nubian goats were used, eight months old and with body weight of 18 ± 2.5 kg, organised into randomised blocks, which were kept on 37 hectares of caatinga from 7 h to 16 h. Intake of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, ether extract, neutral and acid detergent fibre, total carbohydrates and total digestible nutrients was influenced (P<0.05) by the levels of feed supplementation, with linear increases of 202.31; 179.42; 25.05; 11.83; 35.79; 12.27; 142.63 and 166.79 g animal-1 day-1 respectively. There was a substitution effect (P<0.05) on dry matter intake when using feed supplementation at 0.7% BW. Feed supplementation resulted in positive linear effect (P<0.05) for digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, ether extract, total carbohydrates, total digestible-nutrient content and digestible energy, with an increase of 17.15; 16.64; 19.07; 44.74; 15.15 and 17.56% for dry matter, and 0.69 Mcal kg-1 of dry matter respectively. Final body weight, total gain and average daily gain, showed a linear increase (P<.005) of 2.60, 3.09 and 0.036 kg per percentage point of each additional level of supplement. Feed supplementation increases the intake and digestibility of total dry matter and nutrients, a fact that makes greater performance possible, and recommends use up to a level of 0.7% BW to avoid any substitution effect.

Resumo Objetivou-se avaliar balanço hídrico e excreção renal de metabólitos em borregos sem raça definida, alimentados com diferentes quantidades de palma forrageira (Nopalea cochenillifera Salm Dyck), na forma in natura e em farelo. Foram utilizados 20 borregos, com peso vivo médio inicial de 20 Kg e foram distribuídos no delineamento inteiramente casualizado, sendo cinco tratamentos e quatro repetições. As dietas experimentais consistiram em uma dieta controle à base de feno de tífton, farelo de soja, suplemento mineral e calcário, os demais tratamentos visaram testar níveis diferentes de palma forrageira corrigida com ureia em duas formas: in natura e farelada e em dois níveis de substituição (50 e 100%) da matéria seca do feno de tífton. Amostras de sangue e urina foram coletadas para determinação de diferentes metabólitos e minerais e utilização de equações para obtenção dos índices de excreção urinária destes metabólitos, taxa de depuração endógena de creatinina e reabsorção de água livre de eletrólitos, além do registro de ingestão de água e volume de urina. A ingestão voluntária de água sofreu influência das dietas, sendo que os animais submetidos às dietas contendo farelo de palma e feno e farelo de palma foram superiores aos demais tratamentos. A ingestão de água via alimentos também sofreu influência da dieta, sendo maior nos animais que receberam palma in natura e farelo mais palma in natura. Com relação à ingestão total de água foi maior para os animais alimentados com dietas contendo palma in natura em relação aos demais tratamentos. As dietas experimentais influenciaram na excreção renal de metabólitos derivados purínicos e minerais, sem alterar a função renal. A presença da palma forrageira tanto na condição de farelo como in natura proporciona aumento do volume urinário sem alterar a função renal, além de que deve ser considerado como uma excelente estratégia alimentar no semiárido.

Abstract This study aimed to assess fluid balance and renal excretion of metabolites in lambs without defined breed standard, fed different forage cactus (Nopalea cochenillifera Salm Dyck), in natura and bran. 20 lambs were used, with initial body weight of 20 kg and were distributed in a completely randomized design, with five treatments and four repetitions. The experimental diets consisted of a control diet based on Bermuda grass hay, soybean meal, limestone and mineral supplement, other treatments aimed at testing different levels of cactus pear plus urea in two forms: fresh and mash and two levels of substitution (50 and 100%) of dry matter of hay. Blood and urine samples were collected for determination of different metabolites and minerals and use of equations to determine the rates of urinary excretion of these metabolites, rate of endogenous creatinine clearance and electrolyte reabsorption of free water, in addition to recording of water intake and urine volume. The voluntary water intake was influenced by the diets, and the animals subjected to diets containing soybean meal and hay palm and cactus meal were higher than other treatments. Water intake via food was also influenced by diet, being higher in animals fed palm fresh and bran over palm in nature. With respect to total water intake was greater for cows fed diets containing palm in nature compared to the other treatments. The experimental diets influenced the renal excretion of purine metabolites and minerals derived, without changing renal function. The presence of cactus pear both as bran as in nature provides increased urine volume without changing renal function, and to be considered as an excellent food strategy in semiarid.

RESUMO O estudo foi realizado para avaliar o perfil metabólico de cabras lactantes alimentadas com dietas contendo farelo de manga integral em substituição ao milho. Foram avaliados quatro níveis de substituição (0; 33; 66 e 100%) em dietas com relação volumoso:concentrado de 60:40. Oito cabras mestiças Saanen, multíparas e lactantes (48.72 ± 1.99 kg de peso corporal) foram introduzidas no experimento aos 48 dias pós-parto e mantidas até 124 dias de lactação. Utilizou-se como delineamento experimental dois Quadrados latinos 4x4, com quatro tratamentos, quatro períodos e quatros animais por quadrado. Não houve efeito (P>0,05) dos níveis de farelo de manga integral sobre os consumos de matéria seca (1890 g/dia), PB (278 g/dia) e FDN (959 g/dia). Contudo, os consumos de carboidratos não fibrosos e nutrientes digestíveis totais reduziram (P<0,05) 27,9 g/dia e 0,082 kg/dia respectivamente, à medida que aumentava o teor farelo de manga integral nas dietas. As concentrações de ureia, creatinina, gama glutamil transferase, aspartato aminotransferase, albumina, proteínas totais, glicose, triglicerídeos, colesterol total e magnésio não foram alteradas pelos níveis de substituição, com valores médios de 54,52 mg/dl, 0,71 mg/dl, 52,59 UI, 77,37 UI, 4,69 g/dl, 9,32 g/dl, 74,44 mg/dl, 40,10 mg/dl, 39,39 mg/dl e 11,09 mg/dl, respectivamente. Considerando o perfil metabólico, o farelo de manga pode substituir totalmente o milho em dietas de cabras lactantes.

SUMMARY The work was conducted to evaluate the metabolic profile of lactating goats fed diets containing integral mango meal as a replacement for corn. Four levels of replacement (0, 33, 66 and 100%) were evaluated in diets with forage:concentrate ratio of 60:40. Eight crossbred multiparous lactating Saanen goats (48.72 ± 1.99 kg of BW) were introduced in the experiment 48 days postpartum and maintained up to 124 days of lactation. It was used a double Latin Square (4x4) experimental design, with four treatments, four periods and four animals per square. There was no effects (P>0.05) for the integral mango meal level on the intake of DM (1890 g/day), CP (278 g/day) and NDF (959 g/day). However, the intake of NFC and TDN decreased (P<0.05) 27.9 g/day and 0.082 kg/day, respectively, as the dietary integral mango meal increased. The concentrations of urea, creatinine, gamma glutamyl transferase, aspartate aminotransferase, albumin, total protein, glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and magnesium were not altered (P>0.05) by replacement levels, with average values of 54.52 mg/dl, 0.71 mg/dl, 52.59 UI, 77.37 UI, 4.69 g/dl, 9.32 g/dl, 74.44 mg/dl, 40.10 mg/dl, 39.39 mg/dl, and 11.09 mg/dl, respectively. Considering the metabolic profile, mango meal whole can totally replace corn in diets of dairy goats.

RESUMOAvaliou-se o efeito da suplementação alimentar (0; 0,4; 0,8 e 1,2% do peso corporal) sobre os aspectos qualitativos da carne caprina (umidade, cinzas, gordura, proteína, coloração da carne pelo sistema CIE (L*, a* e b*), pH, perda por cocção e força de cisalhamento) e atributos sensoriais aroma caprino, aroma estranho, cor, textura, maciez, sabor caprino, sabor estranho, suculência e aparência geral. Utilizou-se 32 caprinos mestiços da raça Anglonubiana que foram distribuídos segundo delineamento em blocos casualizados, sendo terminados pastagem de caatinga. Houve efeito quadrático (p<0,05) para os teores de cinza e proteína, com máxima de 1,06 e 20,44 g/100 g, respectivamente. Verificou-se efeito linear positivo (p<0,05) sobre o teor de gordura, com incremento de 0,52 g/100 g. Os parâmetros qualitativos foram influenciados (p<0,05), com efeito linear negativo (p<0,05) sobre a perda por cocção, força de cisalhamento e L*, com decréscimos de 3,32%; 0,77 kgf/cm2 e 3,39, respectivamente, e efeito quadrático (p<0,05) para a*, com máxima de 9,13. O parâmetro b* apresentou efeito quadrático (p<0,05), com máxima 8,12, ao contrário do pH que não foi influenciado, com média 5,57. Os atributos sensoriais não foram influenciados (p>0,05) pela suplementação alimentar, com exceção da cor e aparência geral. A suplementação alimentar com 0,8% do peso corporal propicia elevação nos teores de cinza, gordura e proteína, associados a melhoras qualitativas sobre a perda por cocção, maciez e coloração, com incrementos dos atributos sensoriais de cor e aparência geral.

ABSTRACTThe effect was evaluated of feed supplementation (0.0, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.2% of body weight) on the qualitative aspects of goat meat (moisture, ash, fat, protein, colouring using the CIE (L*, a* and b *) system, pH, cooking loss and shear force), and also on the sensory attributes of goat aroma, off-aroma, colour, texture, tenderness, flavour, off-flavour, juiciness and overall appearance. A total of 32 crossbred Anglo-Nubian goats were used, organised into randomised blocks and finished on a pasture of caatinga. There was a quadratic effect (p<0.05) on the levels of ash and protein, with a maximum of 1.06 and 20.44 g/100 g respectively. A positive linear affect (p<0.05) was seen on fat levels, with an increase of 0.52 g/100 g. There was a negative linear effect (p<0.05) on the qualitative parameters of cooking loss, shear force and L*, with decreases of 3.32%, 0.77 kgf/cm2 and 3.39 respectively, and a quadratic effect (p<0.05) on a*, with a maximum of 9.13. There was a quadratic effect (p<0.05) on the parameter b*, with a maximum of 8.12, while the pH was not affected, with an average of 5.57. The sensory attributes were not influenced (p>0.05) by feed supplementation, except for colour and general appearance. Feed supplementation at 0.8% of body weight provides an increase in ash, fat and protein levels associated with qualitative improvements in cooking loss, tenderness and colouring, with increases in the sensory attributes of colour and overall appearance.

Sheep production systems installed in the semi-arid region of Brazil depend on the forage support the ’caatinga’ biome. This study aimed at evaluating the substitution of hybrid ’Tifton 85’ (Cynodon spp.) by cassava (Manihotpseudoglaziovii Pax & K. Hoffm.) hay or silage on the components of sheep’s’ body weight. Twenty-four animals, with no defined breed, were used for the study, with an initial body weight of 19.77 ± 1.95 kg and an average age of 6-mo, being divided into three treatments (’Tifton 85’ hay, cassava silage, and cassava hay). The animals were slaughtered at 56 d and all the body parts of the animals were weighed. Data were subjected to ANOVA and mean comparison test (P = 0.05). Means were superior (P < 0.05) for DM intake and contents of the gastrointestinal tract (CGT) with values of 1.17 kg d-1 and 4.84 kg for cassava hay, respectively. There was no significant difference (P > 0.05) for body weight at slaughter and cold carcass weight, which had means of 28.10 and 12.38 kg, respectively. The hot carcass and leg yields showed values of 58% and 34%, respectively, and were not influenced (P > 0.05) by different forages. The constituents that were not components of the carcass, organs, offal, and by-products were not affected by the replacement of ’Tifton 85’ hay by cassava hay or silage. Cassava hay or silage can replace ’Tifton 85’ hay for feeding sheep in complete diets without compromising their body components’ yields and weights.

Avaliou-se o efeito da suplementação alimentar nos níveis, 0; 0,4; 0,8 e 1,2% do peso corporal (PC), sobre as características quantitativas da carcaça e composição tecidual do pernil de caprinos mestiços terminados em pastagem de caatinga. Utilizaram-se 32 caprinos machos castrados, mestiços da raça Anglonubiana, com oito meses de idade e peso corporal de 18±2,5kg, distribuídos em delineamento de blocos casualizados, que foram mantidos em área de 37 hectares de pastagem de caatinga das 7h às 16h. O peso corporal sem jejum, peso corporal final, peso de carcaça quente e fria, peso de corpo vazio, rendimentos de carcaça quente e fria foram influenciados (P<0,05) pelos níveis de suplementação alimentar, com acréscimos lineares de, 3,50; 2,59; 1,69; 1,76; 3,39kg; 2,42 e 2,44%, respectivamente. Os pesos dos cortes comerciais foram influenciados (P<0,05) pelos níveis de suplementação alimentar, a exceção do peso do pescoço. O rendimento dos cortes não foi influenciado (P>0,05%) pela suplementação, com médias, 10,17; 21,19; 16,23; 11,02; 7,30 e 34,08%, para o pescoço, paleta, costilhar, serrote, lombo e pernil, respectivamente. A composição tecidual em peso absoluto do pernil foi influenciada (P<0,05) pela suplementação alimentar, com incremento de 293,59; 212,04; 28,29 e 53,82g, por unidade percentual do nível de suplementação, para o pernil inteiro, músculo total, gordura total e osso, respectivamente. A suplementação alimentar eleva os parâmetros quantitativos da carcaça, associado a incrementos no tecido muscular, gordura total e ossos do pernil, recomendando-se emprego de 1,2 %PC, com vistas a melhor acabamento para comercialização.

It was evaluated the effect of supplementation feeding levels (0; 0.4; 0.8; and 1.2% of body weight BW) on carcass aspects and leg tissue composition of crossbred goats finish on caatinga pasture. Were used 32 goats crossbred Anglonubiana, with eight months of age and 18±2.5 kilogram of BW, organized in randomized blocks, which were kept in 37 hectares of caatinga pasture, where they remained from 07h to 16h. Fasted live weigh, finish body weight, hot and cold carcass weight, empty body weight, hot and cold carcass yields, were influenced (P<.05) by supplementation feeding, raise of 3.50; 2.59; 1.69; 1.76; 3.39 kilogram, and 2.43; 2.44%, respectively. Retail cuts weight were influenced (P<.05) by supplementation, except neck weight. The cuts yield was not affected (P>.05) by supplementation with means, 10.17; 21.19; 16.23; 11.02; 7.30 and 34.08%, for neck, shoulder, ribs, brisket, loin and leg, respectively. Absolute weight of leg tissue composition was influenced (P<.05) by supplementation, with increase of, 293.59, 212.04, 28.29 and 53.82g, per unit percentage of supplementation, for total leg, total muscle, total fat and bone, respectively. Supplementation feeding increase carcass aspects, associated with increases in leg muscle tissue, fat and bones, recommending use of 1.2% of BW, to better finish for sale.

Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de avaliar as respostas fisiológicas de termorregulação de vacas leiteiras da raça Girolando, no período de verão, mantidas em confinamento. Foram utilizados 15 animais de três grupos genéticos: 1/2, 5/8 e 3/4 Holandês-Gir (HG), sendo 05 vacas de cada grupo genético, distribuídas num delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em parcelas subdivididas. Os parâmetros fisiológicos: taxa de sudação (Tsud), frequência respiratória (FR), temperatura da epiderme (TE) e temperatura de superfície de pelame (TSP) dos animais foram avaliados uma vez por semana, durante nove semanas, de dezembro de 2009 a fevereiro de 2010, totalizando 135 observações. Durante todo o período experimental os dados climáticos foram registrados através de uma estação meteorológica automática, e usados posteriormente para calcular os índices de conforto térmico: ITU (índice de temperatura e umidade), ITGU (índice de temperatura de globo e umidade) e CTR (carga térmica radiante). Os animais 1/2 HG apresentaram Tsud mais alta e FR, TE e TSP mais baixas nos três grupos genéticos, enquanto nas vacas 3/4 HG foram verificadas as médias mais baixas de Tsud e mais altas de TE e TSP. As vacas 5/8 HG ficaram em posição intermediária para os valores de Tsud, TE e TSP. A média de FR dos animais 5/8 e 3/4 HG não diferiram entre si. Concluiu-se que animais de grupos genéticos 3/4 e 5/8 HG demonstram maior sensibilidade ao estresse pelo calor que as vacas 1/2 HG.

This work was carried out to evaluate the physiological thermoregulation responses of Girolando-breed dairy cows kept in feedlot during summertime. A total of 15 animals were used, belonging to three genetic groups: 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4 Holstein-Gir (HG), with five cows from each genetic group, distributed in a completely randomized design, in subplots. The physiological parameters were sweat rate (SR), respiratory rate (RR), epidermis temperature (ET) and coat surface temperature (CST), and were evaluated once a week, during nine weeks, from December 2009 to February 2010, totaling 135 observations. Throughout the experimental period, climatic data were recorded using an automated weather station, and later used to calculate the different thermal comfort indexes: THI (temperature-humidity index), BGHI (black globe temperature and humidity index) and RTL (radiant thermal load). 1/2 HG animals showed the highest SR and lowest RR, ET and CST of all three genetic groups, while 3/4 HG cows had the lowest mean SR and highest ET and CST. 5/8 HG cows had intermediate values for SR, ET and CST. Mean RR values did not differ between 5/8 and 3/4 HG cows. It was concluded that animals from genetic groups 3/4 and 5/8 HG showed greater sensibility to heat stress than 1/2 HG cows.

Ensiling warm-season grasses often requires wilting due to their high moisture content, and the presence of low-soluble sugars in these grasses usually demands the use of additives during the ensiling process. This study evaluated the bromatological composition of the fodder and silage from five Pennisetum sp. clones (IPA HV 241, IPA/UFRPE Taiwan A-146 2.114, IPA/UFRPE Taiwan A-146 2.37, Elephant B, and Mott). The contents of 20 Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) silos, which were opened after 90 days of storage, were used for the bromatological analysis and the evaluation of the pH, nitrogen, ammonia, buffer capacity, soluble carbohydrates, and fermentation coefficients. The effluent losses, gases and dry matter recovery were also calculated. Although differences were observed among the clones (p < 0.05) for the concentrations of dry matter, insoluble nitrogen in acid detergents, insoluble nitrogen in neutral detergents, soluble carbohydrates, fermentation coefficients, and in vitro digestibility in the forage before ensiling, no differences were observed for most of these variables after ensiling. All of the clones were efficient in the fermentation process. The IPA/UFRPE TAIWAN A-146 2.37 clone, however, presented a higher dry matter concentration and the best fermentation coefficient, resulting in a better silage quality, compared to the other clones.

Foram estudados os efeitos da inclusão da raiz de mandioca em substituição ao milho sobre a digestibilidade dos nutrientes e comportamento ingestivo de cabras leiteiras de raça Saanen alimentadas com dietas à base de cana-de-açúcar. Foram utilizadas cinco cabras lactantes com produção média de 2 kg de leite dia-1, distribuídas em um quadrado latino 5 x 5, com cinco níveis de inclusão de raiz de mandioca (0, 10, 20, 30 e 40%) em substituição ao milho. A digestibilidade aparente da MS, PB, MO, EE, CHOT não foi influenciada pelos níveis de substituição do milho triturado por raiz de mandioca. A digestibilidade aparente da FDN diminuiu linearmente em função do aumento de raiz de mandioca nas dietas. A digestibilidade aparente dos CNF aumentou linearmente com o aumento de raiz de mandioca nas dietas. O comportamento ingestivo não sofreu influência da inclusão da raiz em substituição ao milho nos níveis estudados. A substituição do milho triturado pela raiz de mandioca não interfere na digestibilidade e no comportamento ingestivo de cabras em lactação.

It was studied the effects of inclusion of cassava in substitution of corn on nutrient digestibility and ingestive behavior of dairy goats of Saanen breed fed diets based on cane sugar. It was used five lactating goats with average production of 2 kg of milk per day allotted to 5 x 5 Latin square design with five levels of inclusion of cassava (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40%) replacing corn. The apparent digestibility of DM, CP, OM, TC was not affected by the replacement levels of ground corn for cassava. The apparent digestibility of the NDF fraction decreased linearly with the increase of cassava in diets. The apparent digestibility of NFC increased linearly with the increase of cassava in the diets. Feed behavior in all studied variables did not influence the inclusion of cassava in place of corn. The replacement of cracked corn by cassava did not affect the digestibility, and chewing behavior of lactation goats.
