Resumo Introdução: A trombocitemia essencial (TE) é uma condição pouco comum e assintomática na maioria dos casos. No entanto, podem surgir sintomas como cefaleias, síncope, vertigem, dor torácica, eritromelalgia e distúrbios visuais transitórios. Os eventos hemorrágicos e tromboembólicos são os grandes riscos desta patologia. O objetivo da partilha deste caso clínico é alertar para uma patologia rara que pode passar despercebida e causar eventos potencialmente graves. Descrição do caso: Sexo feminino, 43 anos, raça caucasiana, antecedentes de hepatite B crónica, sem antecedentes cirúrgicos nem medicação habitual, incluindo método contracetivo hormonal. Recorreu a consulta com queixas de enfartamento precoce, dispepsia e epigastralgia com três dias de evolução, negando alterações do trânsito intestinal, características das fezes, náuseas ou vómitos. Exame físico e endoscopia digestiva alta recente sem alterações de relevo. Foi consultado o estudo analítico que a utente realizava regularmente no hospital, verificando-se que o valor do número de plaquetas se encontrava consistentemente a rondar os 500.000/uL desde há três anos. Pediu-se ecografia abdominal que descrevia trombose parcial da veia porta e do seu ramo esquerdo. A doente foi medicada com enoxaparina 60 mg 12h/12 h. Foi realizado angio-TC abdominal, estudo pró-trombótico e estudo genético e iniciou varfarina 5 mg 1x/dia, inicialmente sobreposta com enoxaparina 60 mg 12/12h. O angio-TC viria a confirmar a trombose da veia porta e confirmou-se positiva a mutação JAK2 V617F. Assumido o diagnóstico de TE e iniciado tratamento citorredutor com hidroxiureia 500 mg em dias alternados. Comentário: Este caso chama a atenção pelo excesso de plaquetas secundário à TE, ainda que ligeiramente acima do valor de referência, ter originado uma trombose da veia porta. Pretende-se alertar os médicos de família para a importância de realizar um estudo atento, valorizando pequenas variações sustentadas fora dos intervalos da normalidade e fazer uma referenciação correta e atempada quando necessário.

Abstract Introduction: Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is an asymptomatic rare condition in most cases. Nonetheless, symptoms like headache, syncope, vertigo, thoracic pain, erythromelalgia, and transient visual disturbances may surge. The major concerns of this pathology are hemorrhagic and thromboembolic events. The aim of sharing this case report is to alert for the existence of this rare pathology that can go unnoticed and cause potentially serious events. Case description: Female, 43-year-old, Caucasian. Background of chronic B hepatitis, without surgical background nor usual medication, including the contraceptive pill. She appealed to a medical appointment with an early feeling of fullness when eating, dyspepsia, and epigastric pain in the last three days. She denied changes in intestinal habits, feces characteristics, nausea, or vomiting. Physical examination and recent upper endoscopic study were normal. The hospital medical record was examined, verifying that platelet levels were consistently rounding 500,000/uL for the past three years. An abdominal ultrasonography was requested, and it described a partial portal vein and left branch thrombosis. The patient started enoxaparin 60 mg every 12 hours. It was conducted an abdominal angiotomography, prothrombotic, and genetic study, including the JAK2 V617F mutation. The patient started warfarin 5 mg one time daily, initially overlaid with enoxaparin 60 mg 12h/12h. The abdominal angiotomography would confirm the portal vein thrombosis and the JAK2 V617F mutation study was positive. It was assumed the diagnosis of ET and was initiated cytoreductive therapy with hydroxyurea 500 mg on alternated days. Comment: This case report shows that the excessive platelet count, secondary to ET, even if slightly above the reference value, caused a portal vein thrombosis. We aim to alert family physicians to the importance of doing a careful study, valuing little sustained variations out of the normal intervals, and referring correctly and promptly when necessary.

Abstract We assessed the effect of a flood pulse on the diet composition, trophic niche breadth, and feeding intensity of the mandi catfish Pimelodus blochii (Pimelodidae) in the middle Xingu River region, throughout different hydrological periods. Specimens were collected monthly between December 2020 and November 2021, using gillnets. Specimens were measured for standard length (cm) and body weight (g) and then eviscerated to remove the stomach, which was weighed and stored for content identification. In total, we analyzed 93 stomachs of P. blochii, with the species’ diet predominantly composed of fish (86.5%) and terrestrial plants (6.9%). However, this dietary composition varied seasonally, particularly during the flood period when the species exhibited an omnivorous/carnivorous diet, as opposed to other periods when it had a carnivorous/piscivorous diet. Trophic niche breadth also varied, with the species showing a more specialist diet during the filling period. Finally, there was no difference in the amount of food (g) ingested during the hydrological periods. These results highlight the influence of the flood pulse on the feeding ecology of P. blochii, particularly regarding the diet composition. Our findings contribute to advancing the understanding of the relationship between abiotic dynamics and the life history of Amazonian fish species.

Resumo Avaliamos o efeito do pulso de inundação na composição da dieta, amplitude de nicho trófico e intensidade alimentar do bagre mandi Pimelodus blochii (Pimelodidae) na região do médio rio Xingu, ao longo de diferentes períodos hidrológicos. A coleta dos espécimes ocorreu mensalmente entre dezembro de 2020 e novembro de 2021, utilizando redes de espera. Os espécimes coletados foram mensurados quanto ao comprimento padrão (cm) e peso total (g) e, em seguida, eviscerados para remoção do estômago, que foi pesado e armazenado para identificação do conteúdo. No total, foram analisados 93 estômagos de P. blochii, sendo a dieta da espécie composta predominantemente por peixes (86,5%) e plantas terrestres (6,9%). No entanto, essa composição da dieta variou sazonalmente, especialmente durante a cheia, quando a espécie apresentou uma dieta onívora/carnívora, em contraste com outros períodos em que teve uma dieta carnívora/piscívora. A amplitude do nicho trófico também variou, e a espécie apresentou uma dieta mais especialista durante a enchente. Por fim, não houve diferença na quantidade de alimento ingerido (g) entre os períodos hidrológicos. Esses resultados evidenciam que o pulso de inundação exerce influência na ecologia alimentar de P. blochii, principalmente em relação à composição da dieta. Nossos achados contribuem para o avanço do conhecimento sobre a relação entre dinâmicas abióticas e a história de vida de espécies de peixes amazônicas.

RESUMO O hábito alimentar de Trachelyichthys exilis é descrito pela primeira vez, com comentários adicionais sobre seu tipo de crescimento e tamanho de maturação sexual. Nós analisamos 42 espécimes da Reserva Amanã (Amazonas, Brasil) coletados com rede de cerco em bancos flutuantes de herbáceas durante a estação seca de 2002. Conteúdos estomacais revelaram um hábito predominantemente carnívoro (tendendo a piscívoro), um tipo de crescimento isométrico e tamanho de maturação sexual em torno de 5,5 cm de comprimento padrão. Com base nas características biológicas das presas consumidas, presumimos que T. exilis forrageia ativamente durante o crepúsculo/noite ao redor e entre as raízes dos bancos flutuantes, onde captura presas noturnas como pequenos peixes e invertebrados aquáticos, e/ou próximo à superfície da água, onde geralmente repousam as presas diurnas. Nossos resultados fornecem informações essenciais para preencher lacunas de conhecimento sobre a história natural de bagres auchenipterídeos, especialmente sobre a ecologia trófica.

ABSTRACT The feeding habit of Trachelyichthys exilis is described for the first time, with additional comments on its growth type and size at sexual maturity. We analyzed 42 specimens from the Amanã Reserve (Amazonas state, Brazil) collected with a seine net amidst stands of floating herbaceous vegetation during the dry season of 2002. Stomach contents revealed a predominantly carnivorous habit (tending to piscivorous), an isometric growth type, and size at maturity around 5.5 cm standard length. Based on the biological characteristics of the consumed prey, we presume that T. exilis forage actively during the twilight/night around and among the root tangle of herbaceous vegetation, preying upon nocturnally active animals such as small fishes and aquatic invertebrates, and/or close to the water surface, where diurnally active prey usually rests. Our findings provide essential information to fill knowledge gaps on the natural history of auchenipterid catfishes, especially on trophic ecology.

Resumo Objetivo Determinar a relação peso-comprimento (LWR), período de reprodução e variação do fator de condição (K) de Hypostomus affinis em duas drenagens costeiras do sudeste do Brasil, avaliando a influência da precipitação sobre esses aspectos biológicos. Métodos Os peixes foram amostrados trimestralmente entre abril de 2008 e abril de 2010 em afluentes da bacia do Rio Doce (DRB) e do Rio Paraíba do Sul (PSRB). Os espécimes foram capturados com redes de emalhar. Os parâmetros de LWR foram avaliados por localização e sexo, através de um teste t. Usamos a frequência de espécimes maduros (FM) para avaliar o período de reprodução da espécie. Ambos os valores de FM e K foram avaliados por uma equação sinusoidal. Resultados Um total de 492 espécimes foi capturado, sendo 128 foram provenientes da DRB e 364 da PSRB. Em ambas as áreas, os espécimes apresentaram crescimento alométrico negativo. Coletamos espécimes maduros ao longo do período estudado em ambas as drenagens, sendo a maior frequência observada no início do período chuvoso. Encontramos uma correlação positiva entre FM e a variação local da precipitação. O fator de condição (K) foi menor na DRB e não apresentou tendência temporal. Por outro lado, foi observada uma variação de K para o indivíduo do PSRB, com um pico no período de transição seco-chuvoso. Porém, não foi possível correlacionar esse resultado com a variação da precipitação. Conclusões Os parâmetros de LWR de H. affinis foram consistentes com os dados já disponíveis na literatura. A precipitação pode influenciar o FM, mas não os valores de K. Nesse caso, aspectos biológicos como a reprodução e/ou alimentação podem estar influenciando uma variação discreta do fator de condição. A redução dos valores de K nos períodos chuvosos sugere um maior gasto energético para o processo reprodutivo. Em resumo, nossos resultados nos ajudam a entender o ciclo de vida de uma espécie de peixe em um ambiente altamente modificado, especialmente por barragens.

Abstract Aim Determine the length-weight relationship (LWR), the period of reproduction, and evaluate the variation of the condition factor (K) of Hypostomus affinis from two coastal drainages in southeastern Brazil, assessing the influence of the rainfall on these biological aspects. Methods fish were sampled quarterly between April 2008 and April 2010 in tributaries of the Doce River basin (DRB) and the Paraíba do Sul River basin (PSRB). Specimens were caught using gillnets. LWR parameters were assessed by location and sex through a t-test. We used the frequency of mature specimens (FM) to evaluate the breeding period. Both FM and K values were assessed by a sinusoidal equation. Results A total of 492 specimens was captured, of which 128 were from the Doce River basin (DRB) and 364 from the Paraíba do Sul River basin (PSRB). In both areas, specimens showed a negative allometric growth type. We collected mature specimens along the studied period in both drainages, with the highest frequency observed at the beginning of the rainy season. We found a positive correlation between the rate of matures and the local rainfall variation. The condition factor (K) was lower for specimens from DRB and did not show a cyclic trend. On the other hand, we observed a cyclic chance of the K values for the individual from the PSRB, peaking in the transitional dry-rainy period. However, it was not possible to correlate it to the rainfall variation. Conclusions LWR parameters of H. affinis were consistent with data already available in the literature. The rainfall may influence the FM but not the K values. In this case, biological characteristics such as reproduction and (or) feeding may be jointly driving a discrete variation of K values. The reduction in K values in the rainy periods suggests a remarkable energetic cost for the reproductive process. In short, our results help us to understand the life cycle of a fish species within a highly modified environment, especially by dams.

RESUMO Avaliamos o efeito do pulso de inundação na composição da dieta, amplitude de nicho trófico e quantidade de alimento ingerido de dois auchenipterídeos amazônicos com diferentes estratégias alimentares. Os espécimes foram amostrados trimestralmente entre abril/2012 e janeiro/2014 no médio rio Xingu, utilizando malhadeiras. Estes foram mensurados quanto ao comprimento padrão e peso total. Os estômagos dos espécimes foram removidos, pesados e seu conteúdo identificado. Analisamos 360 estômagos de Auchenipterus nuchalis e 584 de Tocantinsia piresi. A dieta de A. nuchalis foi predominantemente composta por insetos aquáticos e crustáceos, enquanto para T. piresi frutos e sementes predominaram. A composição da dieta de ambas as espécies variou sazonalmente, mas apenas para T. piresi a amplitude de nicho trófico variou entre períodos hidrológicos, sendo mais especialista nos períodos de águas altas (enchente e cheia). Ambas as espécies diferiram na quantidade de alimento ingerido entre os períodos hidrológicos, sendo maior para A. nuchalis nos períodos de águas baixas (vazante e seca) e para T. piresi nos períodos de águas altas. Evidenciamos diferentes respostas à variação hidrológica pelas espécies. Enfatizamos que estudos considerando a relação entre a dinâmica do pulso de inundação e a ecologia alimentar dos organismos é fundamental para um melhor entendimento da dinâmica das planícies de inundação.

ABSTRACT We assessed the flood pulse effect on the diet composition, trophic niche breadth, and the amount of food intake of two Amazonian auchenipterids with different feeding strategies. Sampling was carried out quarterly (from April/2012 to January/2014) on the middle Xingu River, using gillnets. We measured specimens for standard length and total weight. The specimens’ stomachs were removed, weighed, and had their contents identified. We analyzed 360 stomachs of Auchenipterus nuchalis and 584 of Tocantinsia piresi. The diet of A. nuchalis was mainly composed of aquatic insects and crustaceans, while T. piresi fed on fruits and seeds. The diet composition of both species varied seasonally, but only T. piresi changed its trophic niche breadth in response to hydrological changes, becoming more specialist during the higher water periods (filling and flood). Both species also showed differences in their amount of food intake between hydrological periods, with A. nuchalis feeding more intensely in lower water periods (ebb and dry), while T. piresi in the higher water periods. We evidenced different responses to the hydrological periods for the related species. We emphasize that studies considering the relationship between flood pulse and feeding ecology of the organisms are essential to understanding river floodplain systems’ dynamics.

Este artigo debruça-se sobre a execução do estado de emergência e da situação de calamidade nas regiões autónomas dos Açores e da Madeira. Quanto ao estado de emergência, resulta da lei serem os representantes da república os titulares dessa competência, devendo exercê-la em conformidade com as orientações do Governo e em cooperação com os governos regionais. Depois da revisão constitucional de 2004, trata-se de uma opção de duvidosa constitucionalidade e funcionalmente inadequada. Relativamente à situação de calamidade, as competências pertencem aos governos regionais, no quadro dos sistemas de proteção civil nacional e regionais. Analisadas as quarentenas obrigatórias impostas por ambas as regiões autónomas, praticadas pelos governos regionais sob a forma de regulamentos administrativos, conclui-se serem as mesmas material e organicamente inconstitucionais. Por fim, a inércia dos representantes da república na execução do estado de emergência consubstancia um caso de renúncia concertada às respetivas competências e tem implicações jurídicas e políticas significativas.

This paper is focused on the implementation of the state of emergency and the administrative calamity situation in the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira. As for the state of emergency, the statutory holders of this competence, which must be exercised in accordance with the Government's guidelines and in cooperation with the regional governments, are the representatives of the republic. After the 2004 constitutional amendment, this option is constitutionally questionable and functionally inadequate. Regarding the administrative calamity situation, the powers belong to the regional governments, within the framework of the national and regional civil protection systems. An analysis of the mandatory quarantines imposed by both autonomous regions, practiced by the regional governments in the form of administrative regulations, concludes that they are substantially and organically unconstitutional. Finally, the inertia of the representatives of the republic in implementing the state of emergency constitutes a case of concerted renunciation of their respective powers and bears far reaching legal and political implications.

RESUMO O Sistema de Drenagens do Norte do Pará abrange os afluentes da margem esquerda do Rio Amazonas, na região sul do Escudo das Guianas no estado do Pará, Brasil. Cinco das áreas estaduais protegidas da região são consideradas estratégicas para a conservação da biodiversidade. No presente estudo, nós acessamos a ictiofauna das cinco áreas de proteção estadual do Sistema de Drenagens do Norte do Pará. Sete expedições foram realizadas entre os meses de janeiro de 2008 e janeiro de 2009, amostrando trechos das bacias dos rios Cuminá, Cuminapanema, Curuá, Jari, Mapuera, Nhamundá e Paru. As expedições resultaram em 286 espécies pertencentes a 38 famílias e oito ordens, incluindo sete novos registros de peixes para o Brasil, seis deles também representando novos registros para a bacia Amazônica. Nossos resultados fornecem uma base sólida para futuros programas de pesquisa e conservação nas áreas de proteção da região.

ABSTRACT The Northern Pará Drainage System encompasses the left-bank tributaries of the Amazonas River in the southern Guiana Shield region of Pará state, Brazil. Five of the region’s state protected areas are considered strategic for the conservation of its biodiversity. In the present study, we assessed the ichthyofauna of the five state protected areas of the Northern Pará Drainage System. Seven expeditions were conducted between January 2008 and January 2009, which surveyed stretches of the Cuminá, Cuminapanema, Curuá, Jari, Mapuera, Nhamundá, and Paru rivers. These surveys yielded 286 species belonging to 38 families and eight orders, including seven new records of fish species for Brazil, six of which are also new records for the Amazon basin. Our results provide a valuable database for future research and conservation programs in the protected areas of the region.

RESUMO Um estudo de campo sobre a proporção sexual, relação peso-comprimento, tamanho de primeira maturação gonadal e o período reprodutivo da pirarara, Phractocephalus hemioliopterus foi realizado na região do Médio Rio Xingu, na Amazônia oriental. Os espécimes foram coletados trimestralmente entre setembro de 2012 e janeiro de 2014, utilizando redes malhadeiras e espinheis. A proporção sexual foi balanceada, e machos e fêmeas foram equivalentes quanto ao comprimento padrão, mas fêmeas foram mais pesadas do que machos. Crescimento alométrico negativo foi evidenciado para machos e crescimento isométrico para fêmeas. O tamanho estimado de primeira maturação sexual foi igual a 77,8 cm. A variação do índice gonadossomático e a maior frequência de indivíduos maduros evidenciaram uma maior atividade reprodutiva no começo do período de águas altas (enchente). Considerando P. hemioliopterus como uma espécie de interesse comercial, as informações aqui apresentadas poderão ser uteis para um futuro plano de conservação e manejo como o estabelecimento de um tamanho mínimo de captura e período de defeso para a região. Além disso, poderá ser útil para avaliar potenciais impactos na biologia dos peixes em decorrência das mudanças ambientais provocadas pela construção da barragem de Belo Monte.

ABSTRACT A field study of the sex ratio, length-weight ratio, body size at first gonadal maturation, and the breeding season of the red-tailed catfish, Phractocephalus hemioliopterus, was carried out in the region of the middle Xingu River in the eastern Amazon basin. The fish were sampled quarterly from September 2012 to January 2014 using gillnets and long lines. The sex ratio was balanced, and while males and females were similar in standard length, the females were heavier than the males, on average. The males presented negative allometric growth, and the females, isometric growth. The estimated size at first maturity was 77.8 cm. The variation in the gonadosomatic index and the greater frequencies of mature specimens indicated a reproductive peak at the beginning of the high-water (flood) period. As P. hemioliopterus is an important commercial fish, our findings will contribute to the future development of effective conservation and management strategies, such as minimum catch size and a close season that is appropriate for the region. These data will also provide important insights for the evaluation of potential impacts on the biology of this fish resulting from the construction of Belo Monte dam.

Resumo Introdução: As doenças cardiovasculares estão entre as principais causas de mortes, e nos últimos tempos observa-se aumento nos implantes de marcapasso cardíaco definitivo (MP), sendo que esse visa não apenas aumentar a sobrevida, mas também a qualidade de vida. Objetivo: Avaliar a qualidade de vida, a aptidão cardiorrespiratória e nível de atividade física de pacientes antes e após o implante de MP em um hospital de grande porte do norte do estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Método: O estudo contou com 19 pacientes submetidos ao MP, onde avaliou-se o prontuário eletrônico, a qualidade de vida (AQUAREL), a aptidão cardiorrespiratória e o nível limite de atividade física diária (VSAQ), a força muscular periférica (MRC), a força muscular respiratória (manovacuometria) o grau de dispneia (MRC modificado) e os parâmetros hemodinâmicos, sendo esses avaliados no pré-operatório e após 30 dias. Resultados: Observou-se média de idade de 71,79 anos, a patologia que levou ao procedimento em 63,1% dos casos foi o Bloqueio Atrioventricular Total, 89,5% dos participantes eram portadores de Hipertensão Arterial Sistêmica e 31,6% de Diabetes Melittus. Observou-se melhora estatisticamente significativa em todos os nos valores analisados, sendo eles: dispneia (p = 0, 0001), força muscular periférica (p = 0, 0001) e respiratória (PIMÁX p = 0,0001 e PEMÁX p = 0,0001), Qualidade de Vida (p = 0,0001) e Capacidade cardiorrespiratória e nível de atividade física (p = 0,0001). Conclusão: Verificamos melhora em todos os parâmetros analisados, podendo assim sugerir, que o MP influência positivamente na qualidade de vida e na funcionalidade dos portadores.

Abstract Introduction: Cardiovascular diseases are among the main causes of death, and in recent years there has been an increase in pacemaker implants (PM), which is intended not only to increase survival, but also to improve quality of life. Objective: To evaluate the quality of life, cardiorespiratory fitness and level of physical activity of patients before and after permanent PM implant in a large hospital in the north of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Method: The study comprised 19 patients submitted to PM surgery who had their electronic health record and quality of life (AQUAREL) evaluated as well as their cardiorespiratory fitness and the limit of daily physical activity (VSAQ), peripheral muscle strength (PMS), respiratory muscle strength (manovacuometry), their degree of dyspnea (modified PMS) and the hemodynamic parameters, all of which were assessed in the preoperative period and after 30 days. Results: A mean age of 71.79 years was observed and in 63.1% of the cases Total Atrioventricular Block was the pathology, while 89.5% of the participants presented systemic arterial hypertension and 31.6% also presented Diabetes Melittus. Statistically significant improvement was observed in all the values under evaluation, namely: dyspnea (p = 0.0001), peripheral muscle strength (p = 0.0001) and respiratory muscle strength (PIMAX p = 0.0001 and PEMAX p = 0.0001), Quality of Life (p = 0.0001) and Cardiorespiratory Fitness and level of physical activity p=0.0001). Conclusion: Improvement was verified in all parameters analyzed, thus suggesting that the PM positively influences the quality of life and the functionality of the patients.

Resumen Introducción: Las enfermedades cardiovasculares están entre las principales causas de muertes, y en los últimos tiempos se observa un aumento en los implantes de marcapaso cardíaco definitivo (MP), siendo que no sólo pretende aumentar la supervivencia, sino también la calidad de vida. Objetivo: Evaluar la calidad de vida, la capacidad cardiorrespiratoria y nivel de actividad física de pacientes antes y después del implante de MP en un hospital de gran porte del norte del estado de Rio Grande do Sul. Métodos: El estudio contó con 19 pacientes que se sometieron al MP, en que se evaluó el registro electrónico, la calidad de vida (AQUAREL), la capacidad cardiorrespiratoria y el nivel límite de actividad física diaria (VSAQ), la fuerza muscular periférica (MRC), la fuerza muscular respiratoria (manovacuometría), el grado de disnea (MRC modificada) y los parámetros hemodinámicos, siendo estos evaluados en el preoperatorio y después de 30 días. Resultados: Se observó un promedio de edad de 71,79 años, la patología que llevó al procedimiento en el 63,1% de los casos fue el Bloqueo Atrioventricular Total, el 89,5% de los participantes eran portadores de Hipertensión Arterial Sistémica y el 31,6% de Diabetes Melittus. Se observó una mejora estadísticamente significativa en todos los valores analizados, siendo ellos: disnea (p = 0,0001), fuerza muscular periférica (p = 0,0001) y respiratoria (PIMÁX p = 0,0001 y PEMÁX p = 0,0001), Calidad de Vida (p = 0,0001) y Capacidad cardiorrespiratoria y nivel de actividad física (p = 0,0001). Conclusión: Verificamos una mejoría en todos los parámetros analizados, pudiendo así sugerir que el MP influye positivamente en la calidad de vida y en la funcionalidad de los portadores.

RESUMO A doença de Parkinson pode ser tratada cirurgicamente em pacientes que desenvolveram complicações motoras, como flutuações e discinesias, ou tremores refratários ao uso de medicação. Nesta revisão, um grupo de especialistas formulou sugestões para um protocolo de avaliação pré-operatória, depois de revisar a literatura publicada até outubro de 2017. Neste protocolo, são sugeridos critérios de elegibilidade e inadmissibilidade para tratamento cirúrgico, bem como procedimentos que devem ser realizados antes das decisões terapêuticas multidisciplinares. A revisão enfatiza a necessidade de estabelecer “equipes de DBS”, com profissionais dedicados especialmente a esta área. Ao final, a seleção do alvo cirúrgico (núcleo subtalâmico ou globo pálido interno) é discutida brevemente, ponderando prós e contras de cada escolha.

ABSTRACT Parkinson’s disease can be treated surgically in patients who present with motor complications such as fluctuations and dyskinesias, or medically-refractory disabling tremor. In this review, a group of specialists formulated suggestions for a preoperative evaluation protocol after reviewing the literature published up to October 2017. In this protocol, eligibility and ineligibility criteria for surgical treatment were suggested, as well as procedures that should be carried out before the multidisciplinary therapeutic decisions. The review emphasizes the need to establish “DBS teams”, with professionals dedicated specifically to this area. Finally, surgical target selection (subthalamic nucleus or globus pallidus internus) is discussed briefly, weighing the pros and cons of each target.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate productive traits in sheep fed roughage-free diets by multivariate analysis. Forty lambs were used in this study: 20 Santa Inês animals, consisting of 10 uncastrated males and 10 females; and 20 crossbreds (½ Santa Inês × Dorper), consisting of 10 uncastrated males and 10 females, at an average age of five months. Lambs were randomly allocated into the following treatments: Santa Inês males fed once daily (SM1); Santa Inês males fed twice daily (SM2); Santa Inês females fed once daily (SF1); Santa Inês females fed twice daily (SF2); crossbred males fed once daily (CM1); crossbred males fed twice daily (CM2); crossbred females fed once daily (CF1); and crossbred females fed twice daily (CF2). In the multivariate analysis, a difference was detected between the mean values for production classes and feeding-behavior variables (Wilks, Pillai, Hotelling-Lawley, and Roy tests). Tocher's optimization method had two groups formed: Group I, comprising treatments SM1, SM2, SF1, SF2, CF1, and CF2; and Group II, containing treatments CM1 and CM2 (crossbred males). When production and cud chews per day were evaluated, neutral detergent fiber digestibility and final weight were the performance-digestibility variables that most contributed to explaining the variation between treatments. When the feeding behavior was assessed, the time spent on other activities was the variable that most contributed. The crossbred genotype (½ Santa Inês × Dorper) and the male sex have superior performance for weight-related traits. However, when these animals are confined with females, it is recommended to supply the feed only once daily, irrespective of the genetic group.

RESUMO Os objetivos com este estudo foram avaliar a ingestão e a digestibilidade dos nutrientes, o ganho de peso e as características de carcaça de cordeiros em pastagem suplementados com níveis de farelo de mamona (FM) em substituição ao farelo de soja na dieta. Trinta e seis cordeiros (com 120 ± 15 dias de idade) cruzados da raça Santa Inês, não-castrados, com peso corporal (PC) inicial de 21,8 ± 3,4kg, foram separados de maneira que os grupos tivessem o mesmo PC médio e distribuídos aleatoriamente em 1 de 4 tratamentos dietéticos. Os tratamentos consistiram em 4 níveis de substituição (0, 33, 67 e 100%) de farelo de soja por FM, com base na matéria seca (MS). O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado com 4 tratamentos e 9 repetições (cordeiros) para cada tratamento. O nível de suplementação foi de 1,6% PC por animal/dia. Houve uma diminuição linear (P < 0,01) na ingestão total de MS e um efeito quadrático (negativo; P = 0,05) para a ingestão de pastagem à medida que o FM foi aumentado no suplemento. Houve um efeito quadrático negativo do aumento de FM do suplemento no consumo de FDNcp, tanto em g/d (P = 0,01) como em %PC (P= 0,05). Houve efeito linear (negativo; P < 0,01) sobre os coeficientes de digestibilidade de MS e FDNcp. Não houve efeito (P ≥ 0,48) de tratamento sobre peso de carcaça quente, rendimento de carcaça, conformação da carcaça, gordura de cobertura ou comprimento da carcaça. Apesar de alguns efeitos negativos sobre a ingestão e a digestibilidade de nutrientes, o aumento da inclusão de FM no suplemento, até a substituição de toda a farinha de soja no suplemento, não afetou o ganho de peso de cordeiros de pastagem ou características de carcaça.

SUMMARY The objectives of this trial were to evaluate intake and nutrient digestibility, weight gain, and carcass characteristics of grazing lambs supplemented with increasing dietary inclusion of castor bean meal (CBM). Thirty-six Santa Inês-crossed, non-castrated, 120 ± 15 d old lambs (initial BW = 21.8 ± 3.4 kg) were randomly allotted to 1 of 4 dietary treatments. The treatments consisted of 4 levels of soybean meal substitution with lime treated CBM (0, 33, 67, and 100%) on the DM basis. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with 4 treatments and 9 replicates (lambs) for each treatment. Supplementation level was 1.6% BW per animal/d. There was a linear decrease (P<0.01) for total DM intake and a quadratic effect (negative; P = 0.05) for pasture intake as CBM was increased in the supplement. There was a negative quadratic effect of CBM inclusion on NDFap intake, both in g/d (P = 0.01) and as in BW % (P = 0.05). There was a linear effect (negative; P<0.01) on DM and NDFap digestibility coefficients. There were no effects (P≥0.48) of treatments on HCW, dressing percentage, carcass conformation, back fat or carcass length. Despite some negative effects on intake and nutrient digestibility, increasing CBM inclusion in the supplement, up to the substitution of all the soybean meal in the supplement, did not affect weight gain of grazing lambs or carcass characteristics.

RESUMO. Objetivou-se estimar correlações entre desempenho e comportamento alimentar de cordeiros castrados da raça Santa Inês alimentados sem volumoso, com peso médio de 20± 1,8 kg e quatro meses de idade (± 0,34). O delineamento inteiramente casualizado foi adotado. As correlações foram obtidas pela análise de correlação linear de Pearson e o teste t, e processados no software SAS (versão 9.2). Os variáveis números de mastigações ruminação por bolo alimentar, número de bolo alimentar ruminado por dia, velocidade de mastigação, e número de bolo alimentar por dia foram positivamente correlacionados com a variação no peso corporal (p < 0,05). Para o número de bolo alimentar ruminado por dia, a correlação positiva foi encontrada com as variações de peso corporal. O peso corporal inicial e o final foram positivamente correlacionados com eficiências da alimentação e da ruminação do comportamento alimentar dos cordeiros, e com o tempo por período de alimentação e de outras atividades. O tempo de alimentação apresentou correlação positiva com a variação de peso corporal por dia e a variação relativa no peso corporal. O tempo de ruminação foi positivamente correlacionado com variáveis do desempenho. As correlações mostram que há influência entre comportamento alimentar e desempenho.

ABSTRACT. The objective was to evaluate the correlation between performance and feeding behavior of feedlot castrated Santa Inês lambs fed without roughage diet, weighing 20 ± 1.8 kg and four months of age (± 0.34). A completely randomized design was adopted. Correlations were obtained by Pearson’s linear correlation analysis and the t test, and processed on SAS software (version 9.2). The variables number of rumination chews per cud, number of cuds ruminated per day, speed of each chew, and number of rumination cuds per day were positively correlated with the variation in body weight (p < 0.05). For number of cuds ruminated per day, a positive correlation was found with the variations in body weight. Initial and final body weights were positively correlated with the feed and rumination efficiencies of the lambs feeding behavior and with the time per period spent feeding and performing other activities. Feeding time had a positive correlation with variation in body weight per day and the relative variation in body weight. Rumination was positively correlated with performance variables. The correlations show that there is influence between eating behavior and performance.
