Abstract: The use of wood as a bioenergetic source requires knowledge of its technical properties. The rubber tree Hevea brasiliensis has an economic life cycle of 25 to 30 years in Brazil. It is used for extracting rubber and generating residual wood for fuel. Our goal was to characterize the wood quality of 10 clonal progenies as a source of raw material for bioenergy. Ten clonal progenies of 12-year-old Hevea brasiliensis from an experimental planting in Selvíria municipality were evaluated. Three trees per clone were evaluated for individual properties of Higher Heating Value, immediate chemical analysis, chemical composition, fiber dimensions, thermogravimetric analysis of wood under nitrogen atmosphere and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy analysis. We highlight clone IAC 311 for fuel because it presents elevated Higher Heating Value and fixed carbon and less volatile material. However, the other genetic materials studied also meet the specifications for energy use and can be highly viable given their physical, chemical, energy, and thermal properties.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a variabilidade genética de Araucaria cunninghamii, em teste de procedência, e estimar ganhos genéticos para a produção de sua madeira, com base em diferentes intensidades de seleção. O experimento foi estabelecido em Luís Antônio, no estado de São Paulo, Brasil, com sementes de polinização aberta coletadas em Queensland, Austrália. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, com seis repetições e quatro plantas por parcela. O diâmetro à altura do peito (DBH), a forma do fuste e a sobrevivência foram medidos 29 anos após o plantio. Diferenças significativas foram detectadas entre as procedências. O coeficiente de variação genotípica foi alto (60%) para DBH. Os valores médios de DBH e forma do fuste foram de 23,21 cm e 4,50, respectivamente. As procedências Langkelly Creek, Brooweena L.A., Yarraman e St. Agnes apresentaram melhor desempenho em DBH, e Imbil Seed Orchard, Brooweena L.A., St. Agnes, St. John e Yarraman, em forma do fuste. Os ganhos estimados com a seleção variaram de 0,5 a 24,8%, para DBH, e de 0,9 a 3,5%, para forma do fuste.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to assess the genetic variability of Araucaria cunninghamii in a provenance test and to estimate the genetic gains in its wood production, based on different selection intensities. The trial was established in Luís Antônio, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, using open-pollinated seed from Queensland, Australia. The experimental design used was a randomized complete block with six replicates, and four plants per plot. Diameter at breast height (DBH), stem form, and survival were measured at 29 years after planting. Significant differences were detected among provenances. The coefficient of genotypic variation between provenances was high (60%) for DBH and stem form. The mean values for DBH and stem form were 23.21 cm and 4.50, respectively. The provenances Langkelly Creek, Brooweena L.A., Yarraman, and St. Agnes showed the best performance for DBH, and Imbil Seed Orchard, Brooweena L.A, St. Agnes, St. John, and Yarraman, for stem form. Genetic gains ranged from 0.5 to 24.8% for DBH, and from 0.9 to 3.5% for stem form.

Abstract Wood is comparatively more conservative than other parts of trees, such as leaves, which present greater phenotypic plasticity. We studied the effect of seed origin on annual increment, physical-mechanical properties and anatomical characteristics of Balfourodendron riedelianum wood in a homogeneous plantation (Luiz Antônio Experimental Station (LAES)) from three natural provenances (Gália and Bauru in São Paulo State and Alvorada do Sul in Paraná State, Brazil). Because genotypic information is a determinant of wood formation, trees were expected to develop wood structure based on their provenances. Our results demostrate that variations in volume, properties and wood anatomy were influenced by provenance. Alvorada do Sul trees showed lower growth in volume and higher strength and homogeneity, compared to Gália and Bauru. Typical radial pattern was not observed for most characteristics, except modulus of elasticity and fiber length in Gália and compression parallel to the grain in Bauru that increased towards the bark. Based on the latter characteristc, B. riedelianum wood in a homogeneous planting has class C40 mechanical strength, as indicated for use in medium-sized structures, light civil construction and the manufacture of furniture.

Resumen La madera es comparativamente más conservadora que otras partes de los árboles, como las hojas, que presentan una mayor plasticidad fenotípica. Se estudió el efecto del origen de la semilla sobre el incremento anual, las propiedades físico-mecánicas y las características anatómicas de la madera de Balfourodendron riedelianum en una plantación homogénea (LAES) de tres procedencias (Gália y Bauru en Estado de São Paulo y Alvorada do Sul en Estado de Paraná, Brasil). Debido a que la información genotípica es un determinante de la formación de la madera, se esperaba que los árboles desarrollaran una estructura de madera basada en sus genética de las procedencias. Los resultados de este estudio demuestran que las variaciones en volumen, propiedades y anatomía de la madera fueron influenciadas por la procedencia. Los árboles de Alvorada do Sul mostraron menor crecimiento en volumen y, por lo tanto, mayor resistencia y homogeneidad, en comparación con Gália y Bauru. El patrón radial típico no fue observado para la mayoría de las características, excepto el módulo de la elasticidad y la longitud de la fibra en Gália y la compresión paralela al grano en Bauru que aumentó en dirección a la corteza. Con base en esta última característica, la madera de B. riedelianum en plantación homogénea tiene una resistencia mecánica de clase C40, tal como se indica para su uso en estructuras medianas, construcción civil ligera y fabricación de muebles.

RESUMEN Objetivo: Identificar retrospectivamente, en personas sometidas a artroplastia total del hombro por fracturas del húmero proximal, el tipo de artroplastia utilizado, la puntuación funcional del hombro, las complicaciones registradas, la influencia del tiempo transcurrido desde la fractura y la colocación del implante en el resultado funcional final. Método: estudio retrospectivo entre 2014 y 2017. Se identificaron las siguientes variables: edad, sexo, tiempo entre fractura y cirugía, tipo de artroplastia, cementación, modularidad, rehabilitación, complicaciones, tiempo de seguimiento y funcionalidad. Fueron recogidos datos de los instrumentos Constant Shoulder Score y American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Standardized Shoulder Assessment Form. Resultados: Muestra compuesta por 12 mujeres y 3 hombres con una edad media de 78 años y un tiempo medio entre la fractura y la cirugía de 29,4 días. En términos de funcionalidad, se observó que las personas con próstesis inversa presentaran mejores resultados en comparación con las sometidas a hemiartroplastia (53,2 vs. 41,1 y 68,5 vs. 44,6). El seguimiento se realizó durante 29,4 meses. Conclusión: La prótesis inversa parece ser la mejor opción de tratamiento y que permite una mejor funcionalidad. La modularidad protésica es importante.

Método: Estudo retrospetivo entre os anos 2014 e 2017. Foram identificadas as seguintes variáveis: idade, sexo, tempo entre a fratura e a cirurgia, tipo de artroplastia, cimentação, modularidade, reabilitação, complicações, tempo de seguimento e funcionalidade. Foram recolhidos dados dos instrumentos Constant Shoulder Score e American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Standardized Shoulder Assessment Form. Resultados: Amostra constituída por 12 mulheres e 3 homens com idade média de 78 anos e um tempo médio entre a fratura e a cirurgia de 29,4 dias. A nível de funcionalidade observou-se que as pessoas com próteses inversas apresentaram melhores resultados em comparação com as submetidas a hemiartroplastia (53,2 vs. 41,1 e 68,5 vs. 44,6). O seguimento foi feito durante foi de 29,4 meses. Conclusão: A escolha de prótese inversa parece ser a melhor opção de tratamento e que permite melhor funcionalidade. A modularidade protésica é importante.

ABSTRACT Objective: To retrospectively identify, in people submitted to total shoulder arthroplasty for proximal humeral fractures, the type of arthroplasty used, the functional shoulder scores, the recorded complications, the influence of the elapsed time from the fracture and the placement of the implant in the final functional outcome. Method: Retrospective study between 2014 and 2017. The following variables were identified: age, sex, time between fracture and surgery, type of arthroplasty, cementation, modularity, rehabilitation, complications, follow-up time and functionality. Data from the scales Constant Shoulder Score and American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Standardized Shoulder Assessment Form were obtained. Results: Sample comprised of 12 women and 3 men with mean age of 78 years-old and a mean time between fracture and surgery of 29.4 days. In terms of functionality, it was observed that people with inverse prosthesis presented better results compared to the ones submitted to hemiarthroplasty (53.2 vs. 41.1 and 68.5 vs. 44.6). The follow-up duration was 29.4 months. Conclusion: The reverse prosthesis seems to be the best treatment option and allows better functionality. Prosthetic modularity is important.

A sinovite vilonodular pigmentada, englobada no grupo dos tumores tenossinoviais de células gigantes, é uma doença rara, benigna e com incidência de 1.8 casos por milhão de habitantes/ano. Ocorre por proliferação da membrana sinovial das articulações, bursas e das bainhas tendinosas, com pigmentação por depósitos de hemossideria. Afecta sobretudo indivíduos entre os 30 e 40 anos. Geralmente é monoarticular, afectando o joelho em cerca de 80% dos casos e o ombro em apenas 2.4% dos casos. A sua clínica é inespecífica, o ao RX esta entidade geralmente passa despercebida. A Ressonância Magnética, não é específica para o seu diagnóstico, mas é útil para diferenciá-la de outras patologias e estratificar a extensão da doença. O diagnóstico definitivo é histológico. A sinovectomia é o tratamento indicado. É fundamental saber o subtipo da doença para a escolha o método cirúrgico: aberto ou artroscópico. Apresentamos um caso de um tumor tenossinovial de células gigantes do ombro, localizado, tratado com exérese artroscópia. O tratamento foi eficaz, sem recidiva até à data.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis, which belongs to the group of giant cell tenosynovial tumors, is a rare benign disease, with an incidence of 1.8 cases per million inhabitants per year. It occurs by proliferation of the synovial membrane of the joints, bursae and tendinous sheaths, with pigmentation by haemosideria deposits. It mainly affects individuals between the ages of 30 and 40. Affects the knee in about 80% of the cases and the shoulder in only 2.4% of the cases. Its clinical manifestations are nonspecific and on XRay this entity usually goes unnoticed. Magnetic Resonance Imaging is not specific for diagnosis but is useful for differentiating it from other pathologies and stratifying the extent of the disease. Definitive diagnosis is histological. Synovectomy is the indicated treatment. Knowing the subtype of the disease is crucial for choosing the surgical method: open or arthroscopic. We present a case of a localized giant cell tenosynovial tumor of the shoulder treated with excision by arthroscopy. The treatment was effective, with no recurrence to date.

Introdução: A altura patelar tem influência na cinética do joelho, sendo o seu posicionamento após artroplastia total do joelho (ATJ) determinante da função e longevidade do implante. A patela baixa após ATJ e´ um factor de mau prognóstico, responsável por uma considerável percentagem de revisões. O sacrifício do ligamento cruzado posterior (LCP) pode levar a um maior rebaixamento da patela após ATJ. Objectivo: Avaliar diferenças na alteração da altura patelar após ATJ, relacionadas com a preservação ou sacrifício do LCP. Material e Métodos: Foram avaliados retrospectivamente 229 pacientes submetidos a ATJ. A altura patelar foi avaliada nas radiografias pré e pós operatórias do joelho, utilizando o ângulo platô-patela modificado. A análise estatística foi realizada com o software IBM SPSS statistics. Resultados: A variação média da altura patelar foi -3.6º. No grupo de preservação do LCP esta foi -3.5° e no do sacrifício -3.9° (p=0.55). Discussão: Foi observada uma tendência à diminuição da altura patelar após a ATJ em ambos os grupos. No sacrifício do LCP a diminuição da altura patelar tende a ser maior, todavia, a diferença entre os grupos não foi estatisticamente significativa. Conclusão: Não se verificaram diferenças estatisticamente significativas dependentes da preservação ou sacrifício do LCP.

Introduction: The patellar height may be important in determining function after total knee arthroplasty. Patella baja after a total Knee arthroplasty is an indicator of poor prognosis, responsible for a considerable percentage of revisions. Total knee arthroplasties with sacrifice of the posterior cruciate ligament may eventually lead to a further lowering of the patella. Objective: To evaluate differences in alteration of patellar height after total knee arthroplasties with and without preservation of the posterior cruciate ligament. Method: A retrospective analysis was made of pre- and post-operative X-rays of 229 patients submitted to total knee arthroplasties. The authors used the modified plateau-patella angle method. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS software. Results: The mean variation of patellar height was -3.6 . In the group with preservation of posterior cruciate ligament was -3.5, and in group without preservation of the posterior cruciate ligament was -3.9 (p = 0.55) Discussion: A tendency towards decreased patellar height was seen in both groups. Although that decrease was been more evident in the group in which the posterior cruciate ligament was sacrifice, the difference wasn’t statistically significant. Conclusions: There were no statistically significant differences depending on the preservation or sacrifice of the posterior cruciate ligament.

As amizades na adolescência são fundamentais para o desenvolvimento social, emocional e cognitivo. Porém, diferenças na qualidade da relação com um melhor amigo podem também estar associadas ao ajustamento psicossocial dos adolescentes. Este estudo procurou identificar diferentes perfis de qualidade de amizade, contrastando-os relativamente a dimensões positivas e negativas dessa relação, bem como ao ajustamento social dos adolescentes no grupo de pares. 821 participantes do 7º ano de escolaridade (M=13 anos), reportaram a sua percepção da qualidade da melhor amizade e nomeações sociométricas permitiram aceder às dimensões do ajustamento social no grupo de pares. Uma análise hierárquica de clusters baseados nas dimensões positivas da qualidade de amizade permitiu identificar três tipos de perfis, nomeadamente de qualidade alta, média e baixa (QA, QM, QB), que se distinguiram significativamente na qualidade global e em todas as dimensões positivas da amizade: as amizades QA caracterizaram-se por mais companheirismo, validação, ajuda, suporte, intimidade e estratégias de resolução de conflitos, enquanto as amizades QB foram marcadas por valores inferiores nestas dimensões. Diferenças de sexo demonstraram que as raparigas experienciaram mais partilha de intimidade e validação e cuidado nas suas díades de amizade. Também nos aspectos negativos (conflitos e traições), as amizades QA se distinguiram por apresentarem níveis menos frequentes. Quanto ao ajustamento social, os adolescentes com amizades de alta qualidade foram considerados pelos pares como os menos socialmente retirados, excluídos e vitimizados, mas os mais pró-sociais e populares/sociáveis. Adolescentes com amizades de baixa qualidade foram caracterizados com valores opostos. Estes resultados mostram a importância da amizade neste período do desenvolvimento e permitem compreender, em particular, a influência da qualidade dessa relação no contexto social dos jovens.

Friendships in adolescence are fundamental for social, emotional and cognitive development. However, differences in the quality of the relationship with a best friend may also be associated with adolescents’ psychosocial adjustment. The goal of this study was to identify different profiles of friendship quality, contrasting them regarding positive and negative features of this relationship, as well as youth’s social adjustment in the peer group. 821 participants from 7th grade (M=13 years old) reported on their perception of best friendship quality and sociometric nominations assessed social adjustment in the peer group. Three profiles emerged from hierarchical clusters analysis based on positive features of friendship quality, namely high-, medium- and low-quality friendships. Such profiles were significantly different in global quality and in all positive qualitative features of friendship: High-quality friendships were significantly higher in companionship, validation, help, support, intimacy, and conflict resolution strategies, whilst low-quality friendships had significantly lower values in all such dimensions. Sex differences revealed that girls experienced more intimate disclosure and validation and caring within their friendship dyads. Regarding negative features, adolescents in high-quality friendships reported less frequent conflict. As for social adjustment, youth in high quality friendships were considered by peers as the least anxious-withdrawn, excluded and victimized, but the most prosocial and popular/sociable. Participants in low-quality friendships were characterized by opposite scores. Findings highlight the significance of friendship in this developmental period, particularly, regarding friendship quality in young adolescents’ social milieu.

RESUMO Foram avaliados os parâmetros genéticos e fenotípicos da bifurcação (BIF), forma do fuste (RET) e diâmetro à altura do peito (DAP) para as procedências e progênies de Dipteryx alata. O experimento foi instalado em delineamento em blocos ao acaso, com 43 tratamentos (26 e 17 progênies dos municípios de Três Lagoas e Brasília no Estado de Mato Grosso do Sul e Distrito Federal, respectivamente) e cinco plantas por parcela. O espaçamento entre plantas foi de 3 x 3 metros. A análise dos dados foi realizada pelo método REML / BLUP (máxima verossimilhança restrita melhor predição linear não viesada). Foram detectadas diferenças significativas entre progênies apenas para DAP. Os valores genéticos individuais variaram de 3,7 a 21,7% para BIF e DAP; A variação genética entre as progênies variou de 9 a 10,5% para BIF e DAP entre as procedências. A herdabilidade individual no sentido restrito foi alta para o DAP (mínimo de 0,31), revelando o potencial de melhoramento genético. As procedências e progênies demonstraram ter variabilidade genética, que pode ser explorada em programas de melhoramento florestal, com ampla base genética.

ABSTRACT Genetic and phenotypic parameters of fork (BIF), stem form (RET) and diameter at breast height (DBH) for Dipteryx alata provenances and progenies were assessed. The trial was lead in a randomized block design, with 43 treatments (26 and 17 progenies from the municipalities of Três Lagoas and Brasília in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul and Distrito Federal, Brazil, respectively) and five plants per plot. The spacing between plants was 3 x 3 meters. The data analysis was performed using the REML/BLUP method (restricted maximum likelihood best linear unbiased prediction). Significant differences were detected between progenies only for DBH. The individual genetic values ranged from 3.7 to 21.7 % for BIF and DBH; genetic variation among progenies ranged from 9 to 10.5 % for BIF and DBH among provenances. Individual heritability in the strict sense was high for DBH (minimum from 0.31), revealing the potential for genetic improvement. Provenance and progenies trial showed genetic variability which can be exploited in forest improvement programs with a broad genetic base.

Resumo As cidades têm se tornado atores importantes nas relações internacionais e essenciais nas políticas de segurança e meio ambiente. Vivemos em um mundo cada vez mais urbano, dominado por aglomerados e atividades humanas. O papel central desempenhado pelos seres humanos na alteração da estrutura física do planeta nos levou a uma época geológica incerta, instável e perigosa – o Antropoceno –, trazendo grandes desafios adicionais à questão da segurança. Esferas locais e globais estão mais conectadas do que nunca, gerando problemas “glocais” nos quais a água desempenha um papel central. A água é o elemento que interliga a complexa rede de alimentos, energia, clima, crescimento econômico e segurança humana. Em um mundo em rápida urbanização, as cidades influenciam o ciclo hidrológico de maneiras significativas, porém incertas, afetando os recursos hídricos além de seus limites. Não há dúvida de que essas questões são altamente relevantes para a disciplina das Relações Internacionais (RI). Entretanto, os estudiosos das RI têm mostrado lentidão ao se engajar com este tema, e a maioria dos estudos acadêmicos das cidades e da segurança hídrica ainda advêm das ciências naturais. Este artigo examina as formas pelas quais as cidades no Antropoceno desafiam a segurança hídrica e por que a área das RI precisa se reinventar se quiser manter sua contribuição à temática da segurança global.

Abstract Cities have become important actors in international relations, and integral to security and environmental politics. We are living in an increasingly urban world, dominated by human settlements and activities. The central role now played by humans in shaping the planet has led us into an uncertain, unstable, and dangerous geological epoch – the Anthropocene – that poses great and additional challenges to security. Local and global spheres are connected as never before, generating ‘glocal’ issues in which water plays a central role. Water is the element that interconnects the complex web of food, energy, climate, economic growth, and human security. In a rapidly urbanising world, cities influence the hydrological cycle in major but uncertain ways, affecting water resources beyond their boundaries. There is no doubt that these issues are highly relevant to the discipline of International Relations (IR). However, IR scholars have been slow to engage with them, and most academic studies of cities and water security still emanate from the natural sciences. This article examines the ways in which cities in the Anthropocene challenge water security, and why IR needs to reinvent itself if it wants to sustain its contribution to global security.

Resumo Foram estudadas as relações entre anatomia da madeira, condutividade hidráulica, densidade aparente e cisalhamento paralelo à grã no tronco de árvores de Handroanthus vellosoi objetivando-se identificar os possíveis trade-offs entre a condutividade hidráulica e propriedades mecânicas. Para este estudo foram cortadas 12 árvores com 24 anos de idade, discos com 10 cm de espessura foram retirados em três alturas: base do tronco, um e dois metros de altura. Propomos que a relação entre a condutividade hidráulica e resistência mecânica encontrados ao longo do tronco H. vellosoi parece indicar um maior investimento mecânico na base do tronco em comparação com as outras duas alturas (1 e 2 metros), anatomicamente representada por vasos de menor diâmetro e fibras com paredes mais espessas. Consequentemente, um investimento em maior resistência mecânica implica em menor condutividade de água, contudo, mais estudos são necessários para determinar se este valor mais baixo em relação ao 1 e 2 metros representa um efeito significativo no transporte de água ao longo do tronco.

Abstract We studied the relationships among wood anatomy, hydraulic conductivity, density and shear parallel to the grain in the stem of Handroanthus vellosoi trees with the goal to identify possible trade-offs between hydraulic conductivity and mechanical properties. For this study we felled 12 trees with 24-year-old and cut 10-cm-thick disks at three heights: base of the trunk, one meter in height, and two meters in height. We propose that the relationship between hydraulic conductivity and mechanical resistance found along the H. vellosoi trunk indicates greater mechanical investment in the wood at the base of the trunk compared with the other two heights (1 and 2 meters). Anatomically, this would be represented by smaller diameter vessels and fibers with thicker walls. Consequently, strength investment implies lower water conductivity at the stem base. However, more studies are needed to determine whether this lower value with respect to 1 and 2 meters represents a significant effect on water transport along the stem.

RESUMO Hipotetizamos que árvores de Myracrodruon urundeuva de duas procedências com genótipos diferentes, apresentem variações anatômicas e na densidade aparente quando plantadas em ambiente diferente da origem de suas sementes, mas nas mesmas condições ambientais. Investigamos a variação radial em 12 árvores. Nossos resultados sugerem que a variação radial em M. urundeuva parece depender mais da origem das sementes, um fator genético, do que da influência do clima e do solo, um fator ambiental, pois só a frequência de vasos e comprimento das fibras mostraram o mesmo padrão de variação radial nas duas procedências. Ao comparar os mesmos anéis de crescimento em cada procedência, notam-se diferenças em todas as características, o que reforça as influências genéticas sobre a formação da madeira. Concluiu-se que as plantas mantêm a estrutura de madeira a partir da informação genética selecionada pelas condições climáticas da região de origem das sementes, devido à natureza conservativa da madeira.

ABSTRACT We hypothesized that Myracrodruon urundeuva trees of two provenances with different genotypes would present variations influenced by their origin terms of anatomy and specific gravity when planted in an environment different from their seed origin, but under the same environmental conditions. We investigated radial variation in 12 trees. The observation that only vessel frequency and fiber length showed the same pattern of radial variation in the two provenances indicate that radial variation in M. urundeuva seems to depend on the origin of the seeds, that is, a genetic factor, rather than on the influence of climate and soil, which repreent environmental factors. We noticed marked differences in all features when comparing the same growth rings in each provenance, a result that reinforces the genetic influence on wood formation. We conclude that the studied plants maintain their wood structure as a result of genetic information, as selected by climatic conditions of seed original area, and possibly due to the highly conservative wood anatomy.

RESUMO Determinamos as variações axiais da densidade aparente, resistência ao cisalhamento paralelo à grã e anatomia da madeira de Astronium graveolens, relacionando estas propriedades ao longo do fuste. Cortamos cinco árvores com 20 anos de idade e estudamos amostras próximas da casca na base do tronco, a um, dois e três metros de altura. As variações axiais encontradas no lenho de A. graveolens parecem propiciar um equilíbrio entre a resistência mecânica da madeira na base do fuste pela maior densidade e também pela maior resistência ao cisalhamento devido a maior frequência de raios que contribuem no travamento das células orientadas no sentido vertical evitando assim que o tronco quebre facilmente ao ser flexionado. Pensando na condutividade hidráulica, vasos com menor diâmetro e frequência na base do fuste podem garantir maior segurança ao diminuir a ocorrência de embolismos que poderiam prejudicar o fluxo de água ao longo do fuste.

ABSTRACT We investigated the axial variation of specific gravity, shear parallel to the grain and anatomical features of Astronium graveolens wood and related these properties to the anatomy along the stem. We felled five 20-year-old trees and cut discs from four different stem heights, including stem base, 1 meter, 2 meters and 3 meters, for a total of 20 discs, and studied wood samples near the bark and at the base of trunk. Axial variations found appear to provide a balance between mechanical strength of the wood at stem base by the higher density and higher shear by the increase in ray frequency that contributes to locking the vertical cells and growth rings, thus preventing the stem from easily breaking when bent. For hydraulic conductivity, vessels with smaller diameter and frequency at the stem base help prevent the occurrence of embolisms that would reduce water flow along the main stem.

RESUMO O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a variação genética e a seleção das melhores progênies de Myracrodruon urundeuva, Astronium fraxinifolium e Terminalia argentea, quanto aos caracteres de crescimento, em Selvíria, Mato Grosso do Sul. O teste de progênie foi instalado utilizando o delineamento de blocos ao acaso com 28 tratamentos, quatro repetições e dez plantas por parcela em linhas simples, no espaçamento 1,5 x 3,0 m. Aos 14 anos de idade, as progênies foram avaliadas quantos aos caracteres: altura (ALT); diâmetro a altura do peito (DAP); diâmetro médio da copa (DMC); forma do tronco (FT, escala de notas, variando de 1 a 5) e sobrevivência (SOB). Foram encontradas altas herdabilidades entre médias de progênies para os caracteres DAP (0,67), DMC (0,57) e forma do tronco (0,83), respectivamente. O ganho predito para DAP indica que a seleção baseada em informações, tanto de progênies, quanto de indivíduos dentro de progênies foram substanciais, o que denota uma boa perspectiva de exploração da variabilidade genética ao longo de um programa de melhoramento genético para as espécies estudadas, assim como o estabelecimento de estratégias para futura formação de um pomar de sementes.

ABSTRACT The present study aimed at evaluating genetically the best progenies ofMyracrodruon urundeuva, Astronium fraxinifolium e Terminalia argentea from Selvíria, MS, concerning their growing traits. The progeny test was performed by outlining randomized blocks with 28 treatments, 4 repetitions and 10 plants per plot in single rows at 1.5 x 3.0 spacing. At 14 years of age, the progenies were evaluated concerning the traits: height (ALT, m); diameter of the height (DAP, cm); average diameter of the top (DMC, cm); trunk shape (FT), grade scale, ranging from 1 to 5, and survival (SOB, %). The average herdability for the traits studied is considered from medium to highs magnitudes (0.67; 0.57 e 0.83) for DAP, DMC e trunk shape, respectively. More expressive outcomes were obtained from the average of progenies (9.42; 9.40 e 12.83) for DAP, respectively, which indicates that the selection can be effective using such information, not only from the families but also from the individuals for native progenies from the region which indicates a good perspective of genetic variability to be exploited along a genetic breeding program for the studied species and the establishment of strategies for future formation of a seed orchard.

Atualmente a vegetação natural do Cerrado encontra-se altamente fragmentada, causando a perda da variabilidade genética e, concomitantemente, risco de extinção das populações remanescentes nestes fragmentos. Não indiferente a isto, o objetivo desse trabalho foi estimar a variabilidade genética de um teste de progênies de Dipteryx alata, formado a partir do material da Estação Ecológica de Paulo de Faria, para efetivar a conservação genética do que ainda resta da espécie no Estado de São Paulo e subsidiar um método de seleção visando a formação de pomar de sementes com qualidade genética para serem empregadas na restauração do Cerrado. O teste de progênies, composto por 59 progênies, 17 repetições e uma planta por parcela, foi instalado no dia 10 de julho de 2013, na Fazenda de Ensino, Pesquisa e Extensão (FEPE) da Universidade Estadual Paulista, Ilha Solteira, SP, Brasil. As estimativas dos parâmetros genéticos foram baseadas na altura total de plantas com 3, 7 e 21 meses de idade. As estimativas de herdabilidade média, coeficiente de variação genética individual, acurácia (0,81, 39,88 e 0,90, respectivamente, aos três meses) e correlações genéticas entre ALT e DMC (0,74) indicaram que a formação do teste de progênies permitiu resgatar o material genético com variabilidade genética suficiente para garantir a formação de novas populações e as estimativas dos parâmetros genéticos apresentaram base genética promissora, o que permite ganhos na seleção em programas de melhoramento e a formação de pomar de sementes para utilização em programas de restauração.

ABSTRACT Currently, the natural vegetation of the Cerrado is highly fragmented, causing the loss of genetic variability and concomitant risk of extinction of the remaining populations in these fragments. Not indifferent to this, the aim of this study was to estimate the genetic variability of a progeny test of Dipteryx alata, formed from the material of Estação Ecológica Paulo de Faria, to effect the genetic conservation of what remains of the species in the State of São Paulo and subsidize a selection method aimed the formation of a seed orchard with genetic quality to be used in the Cerrado restoration. The progeny test, with 59 progenies, 17 replications and a plant per plot, was installed on July 10, 2013, in the Fazenda de Pesquisa, Ensino e Extensão (FEPE) of Universidade Estadual Paulista, Ilha Solteira, SP, Brazil. The genetic parameter estimates were based on total plant height of 3, 7, and 21 months of age. Estimates of average heritability, individual genetic variation coefficient, accuracy (0.81, 39.88, and 0.90, respectively, at three months), and genetic correlations between ALT and DMC (0.74) indicated that the formation of the test progenies allowed to rescue the genetic material with enough genetic variability to ensure the formation of new populations and estimates of genetic parameters showed promising genetic basis, which allows gains in selection in breeding programs and seed orchard formation for use in restoration programs.

O presente estudo visou traduzir para português o questionário “The Father’s Role” e analisar a qualidade do ajustamento do modelo de medida do instrumento para pais e mães, numa amostra de 200 famílias nucleares, com crianças em idade pré-escolar. Os resultados permitem suportar a estrutura uni-fatorial do QPP para as respostas do pai, com índices de ajustamento que sustentam a boa qualidade do modelo. Para as mães apenas um modelo bi-fatorial se mostrou adequado. Os resultados sugerem que as atitudes e crenças sobre a parentalidade de pais e mães portugueses poderão ter estruturas diferentes.

The aim of this study was to translate “The Father’s Role Questionnaire” to Portuguese and to test its factor structure for fathers and mothers, in a sample of 200 bi-parental families, with pre-school age children. Results support the uni-factor structure of the questionnaire for fathers, showing adjustment indices that support the good quality of the model. For mothers only a bi-factor model has shown to be adequate. Results suggest that the beliefs and attitudes for Portuguese fathers and mothers may have different structures.
