RESUMO Este estudo descreveu os padrões reprodutivos e de recrutamento do siri Achelous spinimanus (Latreille, 1819) na região de Ubatuba, litoral norte de São Paulo, Brasil. Os siris foram coletados mensalmente, de janeiro de 1998 a dezembro de 1999, em 18 locais em três enseadas (Ubatumirim, Ubatuba e Mar Virado), utilizando um barco de pesca comercial. Em cada área de amostragem foram registrados a temperatura de fundo, salinidade e teor de matéria orgânica. Um total de 1.911 indivíduos foram coletados: 350 machos adultos, 475 fêmeas adultas não ovígeras, 584 fêmeas adultas ovígeras e 502 jovens. As fêmeas reprodutivas foram mais abundantes em áreas profundas; essa migração pode ser uma estratégia para melhorar a dispersão e a sobrevivência das larvas. As fêmeas ovígeras foram encontradas durante todo o ano, indicando uma reprodução contínua, com sua abundância positivamente correlacionada à temperatura. Durante a pesquisa de dois anos, foram encontrados caranguejos em todos os estágios de desenvolvimento gonadal. Podemos inferir que a região de Ubatuba fornece recursos adequados para o estabelecimento e desenvolvimento de A. spinimanus.

ABSTRACT This study describes the reproductive and recruitment patterns of the swimming crab Achelous spinimanus (Latreille, 1819) in the Ubatuba region of the northern coast of São Paulo, Brazil. Crabs were captured monthly from January 1998 to December 1999 in 18 sites located in three bays (Ubatumirim, Ubatuba, and Mar Virado), using a commercial fishing boat. In each sampling area, bottom temperature, salinity, and organic matter content were recorded. A total of 1,911 individuals were captured: 350 adult males, 475 non-ovigerous adult females, 584 adult ovigerous females, and 502 immature individuals. Reproductive females were more abundant in deeper areas; this migration might be a strategy to improve larval dispersion and survival. Ovigerous females were found year-round, indicating a continuous reproduction, and their abundance was positively correlated with temperature. During the 2-year survey, crabs with all gonadal development stages were found. We can infer that this region provides suitable resources for the development of A. spinimanus.

RESUMO O costão rochoso de Praia Grande (Ubatuba, SP) é formado por matacões rochosos e recifes de areia formados por poliquetas sabelarídeos. Essas estruturas oferecem abrigo e área de forrageamento para diversos organismos marinhos, e atraem muitos turistas. O caranguejo Eriphia gonagra (Fabricius, 1781) habita essas estruturas, podendo ser utilizado como bioindicador, uma vez que estas podem ser afetadas por ações antrópicas. Por meio deste estudo avaliou-se o conteúdo estomacal e caracterizou-se os hábitos alimentares de uma população de E. gonagra, levando em consideração o sexo, tamanho e microhabitat. Amostragens mensais foram realizadas em 1996 e 1997 e os caranguejos foram capturados manualmente na Praia Grande. Assim, os espécimes amostrados foram caracterizados de acordo com o local de captura (microhabitat) como recife rochoso (RO) ou de areia (SR). Os itens mais abundantes foram moluscos, algas, poliquetos e crustáceos, sendo observada a importância destes grupos como recurso alimentar no ambiente estudado. Os moluscos foram mais abundantes nos estômagos dos caranguejos amostrados no RO, enquanto os demais item aumentavam nos caranguejos dos recifes de areia. Dentre os espécimes amostrados no SR, poliquetos foi o alimento foi mais comum, indicando que esse biótopo também é utilizado como fonte rica em proteínas. A proporção de itens diferiu também entre classes de tamanho. Conhecer tais hábitos é essencial para estudos de requisitos nutricionais, monitoramento de relações entre organismos, bem como para avaliação de impactos ecossistêmicos em costões rochosos.

ABSTRACT The rocky shores of Praia Grande, in Ubatuba (São Paulo, Brazil), are formed by rock and Sabellaridae polychaete sandy reefs. These microenvironments offer shelters and foraging areas for several marine organisms and attracts many tourists. The crab Eriphia gonagra (Fabricius, 1781) inhabits these structures and can be used as a bioindicator, since they may be affected by anthropogenic actions. This study evaluated the stomach contents and characterized the feeding habits of an E. gonagra population, inhabiting the rocky shores from Praia Grande, taking into account the sex, size, and microhabitat. Monthly samplings were performed in 1996 and 1997 and the crabs were manually captured on the rocky surface or into of the sand reefs. So, the specimens sampled were characterized according to their capture site (microhabitat) as rocky (RO) or sand reef (SR). The most abundant food items were Mollusca, algae, Polychaeta, and Crustacea, being observed the importance of these groups as a nutritive resource in the studied environment. Mollusks were more abundant in the stomachs of crabs sampled on the rocks, while the other items increased in the sand reefs crabs. In the specimens sampled in the SR, polychaetes were the item food more common, indicating that this biotope is also used as a rich source of protein. The proportion of items differed also between size classes. Knowledge of such habits is essential for nutritional requirements studies, monitoring relationships among organisms, as well as assessing future environmental impacts in consolidated coastal regions.

Abstract During the ontogenetic development of crustaceans, the relative growth of some structures may change, especially during the transition from juvenile to adult. This study describes the relative growth of body structures of Macrobrachium iheringi, and provides information on its population dynamics, such as structure, fecundity, and morphological sexual maturity. The sampling of M. iheringi was carried out in “Ribeirão da Hortelã”, in Botucatu (SP, Brazil). The length of the carapace (CL), abdomen (AL), and ischium (IL), merus (ML), carpus (CrL), propodus (PpL), and dactyl (DcL) of the second right pereopod were measured. In addition, the width of the second abdominal pleura (PW) and propodus height (PpH) were included in analyses. The relationships that best demonstrated the changes in the allometric coefficient were CL vs PpL in males and females. The CL, in which males and females reach morphological sexual maturity, was estimated as 13.3 mm and 11.1 mm, respectively. The sex-ratio differed from the expected 1:1 and was skewed towards females. Precipitation and temperature influenced the abundance of different demographic classes. Macrobrachium iheringi has few but large eggs, which is expected since this species has an abbreviated larval development. Based on these results, we conclude that the propodus are good indicators of the size at onset of morphological sexual maturity. In addition, important information was obtained on the biology of M. iheringi, including its life cycle pattern, reproduction and influence of abiotic factors.

Resumo: Este estudo avaliou as relações dos fatores ambientais e a distribuição espaço-temporal de H. pudibundus, com a hipótese de ocupação diferencial em uma região do litoral sudeste do Brasil. As amostragens ocorreram mensalmente no período de janeiro a dezembro de 2000, ao longo de nove transectos de 2 a 40 m de profundidade, na região de Ubatuba, litoral norte de São Paulo. Foram coletados 1808 indivíduos de H. pudibundus. A maior abundância foi registrada no inverno nos transectos 10 a 25 m de profundidade. A abundância foi positivamente correlacionada com o teor de matéria orgânica e a textura do sedimento (valores de phi). Durante o outono e inverno com a retração da ACAS ocorre o revolvimento do sedimento e a supensão da macrofauna detritívora e filtradora, aumentando a disponibilidade de alimento. Locais caracterizados por sedimentos mais finos oferecem maior disponibilidade de alimentos, além de facilitar o comportamento de H. pudibundus se enterrar. Devido ao comportamento predatório oportunista, esta espécie se alimenta de uma grande variedade de organismos, incluindo moluscos, anelídeos e foraminíferos, que são as presas mais abundantes nas áreas estudadas, principalmente em locais com grãos menores.

Abstract: This study evaluated the relationships between environmental factors and the spatio-temporal distribution of H. pudibundus, with the hypothesis of differential occupation in coastal areas of southeastern Brazil. The samplings took place monthly in January-December 2000 period, along nine transects from 2 to 40 m of depth, in Ubatuba region, northern coast of São Paulo. We collected 1808 individuals of H. pudibundus. The highest abundance was recorded in winter in the transects 10-25 m deep. Abundance was positively correlated with organic matter content and texture sediment (phi values). With the retreat of the South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) in autumn and winter, the sediment swirls, suspending the detritivore and filter-feeding macrofauna, increasing the food availability. Sites characterized by finer sediment offer higher food availability, besides facilitating H. pudibundus burying behavior. Due to its opportunistic predatory behavior, this species feeds on a variety of organisms, including mollusks, annelids and foraminifera, which are preys more abundant in the studied area and in sediments of finer grain size.

ABSTRACT This is the first study to evaluate in broad spatiotemporal scales the growth parameters and population structure of Rimapenaeus constrictus, a barely damaged species composing the bycatch from shrimp fishing in the Western Atlantic. The abundance and size-class frequency distribution, growth, longevity and sex ratio were evaluated from monthly samples obtained in the northern littoral of São Paulo state from Jan/1998 to Jun/2003. We measured 5,812 individuals in which the sex ratio was skewed toward females; this was more evident in size classes greater than 10 mm in CL (carapace length) (binomial test, p<0.05). We selected 16 growth cohorts of females, and 8 of males, the majority consisting of younger individual cohorts excluded from the fisheries closure period. Growth estimates resulted in a CL∞ of 17.42 mm, a growth coefficient of 0.008 and a longevity of 579 days (1.60 year) for females, as well as a CL∞ of 16.3 mm, a growth coefficient of 0.01 and a longevity of 425 days (1.17 year) for males. Our results provide information of incontestable relevance to our knowledge of fishing management. We therefore strongly recommend that the fisheries closure period be changed to protect this species' recruitment period and consequently its adult individuals.

Abstract This study investigated the temporal abundance, periods of reproduction and recruitment, gonad sexual maturity, and population structure of the swimming crab Achelous spinimanus (Latreille, 1819) in Macaé, a region of the Brazilian coast affected by upwelling events. The samples were collected monthly during one year. The crabs were counted, sexed and measured for maximum carapace width (MCW). Four developmental stages were described in males and females. Environmental variables as temperature, salinity, organic matter and Phi were measured. A Principal Components Analysis indicated that environmental variables were strongly correlated with seasons, affecting the abundance of this species, which was high during summer and autumn. The periods of reproduction and recruitment were also seasonal, with a peak of females with developed gonads and ovigerous females during autumn and immatures during summer and autumn. Males and females did not differ in size at gonad sexual maturity, estimated at 39.9 and 42.9 mm MCW, respectively. The environmental conditions in this upwelling region may have induced this population of A. spinimanus to show different characteristics and behaviors from other populations on the Brazilian coast, since alterations linked to the periods of reproduction and recruitment, as well as the population structure and distribution, may reveal different survival strategies of the species.

Abstract The goal of this study was to evaluate the reproductive investment (RI) and the fecundity of the shrimp Nematopalaemon schmitti (Holthuis, 1950), caught by trawling in the southeastern Brazilian coast in 2008, 2009 and 2011. The carapace length (CL) of ovigerous females was measured and the development stage of their ovaries and embryos were analyzed. A significant relationship was observed between the female body and embryo weights (Linear regression: r² = 0.26, F = 20.77, P < 0.0001, Ln BDW = 0.92. Ln FBDW - 2.24) and between number of embryos and CL (Linear regression; stage I: r² = 0.38, F = 36.15, P < 0.0001; stage II: r² = 0.34, F = 14.10, P < 0.001), but not between the RI and CL (ANOVA: F = 0.47, df = 7, P = 0.85). Association of the changes in embryo development and ovarian maturation of ovigerous females was tested. Females with rudimentary ovaries predominantly showed embryos in stage I (early development) and females with developed ovaries only showed embryos in stage II (final development), showing synchrony between the development of both, thus supporting the hypothesis of a continuous reproductive cycle for N. schmitti in the region. Such information is fundamental for understanding the reproductive biology of these crustaceans, as well as other caridean shrimps, in order to promote the maintenance and preservation of natural stocks.

Abstract This study describes the weight vs. carapace length relationship and provides the total and monthly condition factor values for populations of Macrobrachium jelskii (Miers, 1977) and M. brasiliense (Heller, 1868) occurring in southeastern Brazil. The biological characteristics were compared and related to the climatic environmental factors between the two areas. Our investigation sampled M. jelskii from the Barra Mansa Dam, Mendonça, SP, a semilotic environment with greater resilience than the Talhadinho Stream, Talhado, SP, a lotic environment where specimens of M. brasiliense were captured. Individuals were classified according to sex and measured at the carapace length (CL) and weighed (WE). The relationship WE/CL was analyzed by dispersion diagrams of the empirical points, which were set to the power function (WE = a.CL b ). Values of the mean condition factor were compared monthly. In total, 1493 individuals of M. jelskii and 843 individuals of M. brasiliense were captured. Analyses of the constant allometry revealed that both sexes of M. jelskii, as well as females of M. brasiliense grow proportionately more in size than weight. The results concerning the morphometric aspects studied in both species suggest an association with the reproductive processes.

Abstract The variation in reproductive investment (RI) and the hypothesis of multiple spawning were evaluated in the redfinger rubble crab Eriphia gonagra (Fabricius, 1781). The gonads and embryos showed synchronous development, and fecundity and RI varied widely among females of the same size class. The mean RI value recorded was 11.31%, with no significant differences among the means for different size classes. The allometric analysis of fecundity indicated RI decrease while body size increase, but we suggested that this occurs due to size overestimation where the largest width of carapace was used as body size reference in these analyzes. In addition, we found an isometric relationship for “female weight vs. egg number”, and also for “female weight vs. egg weight”, indicating that RI increased proportionally with size of females. Relatively high frequencies both of smaller females with rudimentary gonads, and of larger females with developed gonads were observed. This indicates that larger females take place more frequently in the population reproductive output over time. This difference could not be observed by means of RI analyses of captured and fixed crabs, for which only one stage of gonad development and/or one spawning is usually recorded.

Abstract This is a brief comment on Nilton Hebling's career and contribution to carcinology. Our intention is to show to next generation of carcinologists some insights of his professional life, and to acknowledge his great attitude while teaching and mentoring many Brazilian carcinologists.

Abstract Allometric growth of chelae dimensions was analyzed to assess the average size at the onset of morphometric maturity (ASOMM) and sexual dimorphism regarding the pair of chelae in the Aegla castro. Both adult males and females are heterochelous with the most robust chela occurring predominantly on the left side. Both chelae are larger in males than they are in females of similar size, thus characterizing these structures as sexually dimorphic traits. The ASOMM estimated for males and females were 10.91 and 10.03 mm of carapace length (CL), respectively. The increase in variability of chelae dimensions in post-pubertal males led to the recognition of two morphotypes (I and II). Temporal variation in the proportions of morphotype II males in relation to females showing late ovarian development was synchronous, making the sexually functional nature of these males evident. The average size at the onset of functional maturity (ASOFM) estimated for males (based on the transition from morphotype I to morphotype II) and females (based on the detection of late ovarian development or eggs) were 17.12 and 12.59 mm of CL, respectively. Ovigerous females were sampled from April through August 2007, characterizing a marked seasonal reproductive period lasting for 5 months.

Abstract The spatio-temporal distribution of juveniles of the pink shrimps Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis (Latreille, 1817) and Farfantepenaeus paulensis (Pérez-Farfante, 1967) in the Ubatuba region (SP) was investigated. Sampling was performed in the bays of Ubatumirim (UBM), Ubatuba (UBA) and Mar Virado (MV). A total of 2,018 F. brasiliensis and F. paulensis were collected. The largest catch of juveniles of both species occurred in UBA (N = 867), followed by UBM (N = 729) and MV (N= 422). The bottom sediment in MV had the highest silt and clay content, which explains the negative correlation of the substrate with the abundance of both species. Temperature was positively correlated with the abundance of both species. Juveniles were highly abundant in shallower areas in the summer of 1998. The high rainfall in this El Niño period may have lowered the salinity in estuarine waters and led the shrimps to move to coastal areas in search of higher salinities such as in bays. With this unusually early reduction in salinity, individuals migrated to the bay before the closed season began and thus became more exposed to fishing. We confirmed that monitoring environmental variations, especially in El Niño years, is essential for understanding the distribution patterns of juveniles of both species.

RESUMO O presente estudo investigou o crescimento, longevidade e dinâmica reprodutiva deArtemesia longinaris na costa sudeste do Brasil, durante um período de dois anos. Coletas mensais foram conduzidas em Ubatuba e Caraguatatuba, usando um barco de pesca de camarão equipado com redes "doublerig". Cada região foi dividida em sete estações amostrais com profundidades de até 35 m. Frequência de classes de tamanho, crescimento, longevidade, razão sexual e abundância de indivíduos em cada classe demográfica foram comparadas. A relação entre os fatores ambientais e a abundância de cada classe demográfica foi analisada utilizando a Análise de Correlação Canônica. Um total de 64.641 indivíduos foi coletado (6.928 analisados), com longevidades estimadas de 1,30 (Ubatuba) e 1,14 (Caraguatatuba) anos para fêmeas e 1,03 anos para os machos de ambas as regiões. Houve um desvio estatisticamente significativo na razão sexual a favor das fêmeas (teste Qui-quadrado, p < 0,05) em ambas as regiões. A Análise de Correlação Canônica resultou em um coeficiente de correlação canônica de 0,31 (p = 0,00002). A salinidade e a temperatura apresentaram alta correlação principalmente com a presença de fêmeas reprodutivas. Em geral, esta classe demográfica foi mais comum em condições de baixa temperatura e alta salinidade. Estes resultados, tal como outros obtidos em estudos abordando regiões de temperaturas mais frias com a espécie, encontram-se em conformidade com o padrão proposto pelo clássico paradigma do efeito latitudinal.

ABSTRACT The present study investigated the growth, longevity and reproductive dynamics ofArtemesia longinaris in the southeastern coast of Brazil over a two-year period. Monthly collections were conducted in Ubatuba and Caraguatatuba using a shrimp fishing boat equipped with "double-rig" nets. Each region was divided into 7 sampling stations up to 35 m deep. Size frequency distributions, growth, longevity, sex ratio, and abundance of individuals in each demographic class, were compared. The relationship between abiotic factors and abundance of each demographic class was assessed using a Canonical Correlation Analysis. A total of 64,641 individuals were collected (6,928 measured) with an estimated longevity of 1.30 (Ubatuba) and 1.14 (Caraguatatuba) years for females and 1.03 years for males in both regions. There was a statistically significant bias in sex ratio toward females (Chi-squared test, p < 0.05) in both regions. The Canonical Correlation Analysis resulted in a canonical correlation coefficient of 0.31 (p = 0.00002). Salinity and temperature showed high correlation mainly with the presence of reproductive females. In general, this demographic class was most common in conditions of low temperature and high salinity. These findings, as well as other studies carried out in colder regions with the same species, are consistent with classical latitudinal paradigm.

Os principais objetivos deste estudo foram caracterizar a estrutura populacional e a ocupação de conchas de duas espécies simpátricas de ermitões, Pagurus brevidactylus e Paguristes tortugae. O estudo foi desenvolvido de março de 2010 a fevereiro de 2011, no sublitoral consolidado da Ilha das Couves, costa sudeste brasileira. Os espécimes foram coletados por meio de sessões de mergulho autônomo. Um total de 195 indivíduos de P. brevidactylus e 132 de P. tortugaeforam examinados. Para ambas as populações foram registrados padrões de distribuição unimodal, que foram não normal para P. brevidactylus e normal para P. tortugae. O tamanho mediano para P. brevidactylus foi significativamente menor do que P. tortugae; para as duas espécies, machos foram significativamente maiores do que as fêmeas. Jovens e fêmeas ovígeras foram registrados na maior parte do período amostrado, assim como na maioria das classes de tamanho para ambas as espécies. Não foram verificadas diferenças significativas na proporção sexual 1:1 de ambas as populações, contudo desvios foram registrados em algumas classes de tamanho. Foram registradas sobreposições na utilização de conchas. Para P. brevidactylus e P. tortugae foram registradas características populacionais semelhantes; atingem a maturidade sexual em classes de tamanho iniciais, e a presença de jovens e fêmeas ovígeras em quase todo período de estudo sugere que tenham reprodução contínua. Essas interações interespecíficas envolvendo a partilha de recursos indica um processo de regulação, que provavelmente, está incluído na estratégia de equilíbrio dessas populações.

The main goal of this investigation was to characterize the population structure and shell occupancy of two sympatric hermit-crab species, Pagurus brevidactylus and Paguristes tortugae. The study was undertaken at Couves Island on the southeastern coast of Brazil, from March 2010 through February 2011, on subtidal rocky bottoms. Specimens were collected by SCUBA diving sessions. A total of 195 individuals of P. brevidactylus and 132 of P. tortugae were examined. Both populations showed unimodal size-frequency distributions, which were non-normal for P. brevidactylus and normal for P. tortugae. The median size of P. brevidactylus was significantly smaller than P. tortugae; in both species, males were significantly larger than females. For both, juveniles and ovigerous females were recorded in all size classes and in almost the entire sampling period. No significant departures from the 1:1 sex ratio were detected, although some size classes were skewed. Overlaps in shell occupation were recorded. Pagurus brevidactylus and P. tortugae showed similar population features; they reached sexual maturity at small sizes, and the nearly year-round presence of young and ovigerous females suggests continuous reproduction. These inter-specific interactions involving resource partitioning suggest a regulatory process that is probably part of the equilibrium strategy of these populations.

A variação diuturna na abundância e no tamanho de Pleoticus muelleri foi investigada na região de Ubatuba durante o ano de 2000. Em cada estação do ano, as coletas foram realizadas no período diurno e noturno em 8 profundidades, de 5 a 40 m. O número estimado de camarões foi de 955 indivíduos, 272 coletados durante o dia e 683 à noite. Houve diferença na abundância de P. muelleri entre o dia e a noite (χ², p=2.33E-40). A abundância durante o dia e à noite diferiu por estação com exceção da primavera (χ², p=0.06). A abundância em ambos os períodos também diferiu por profundidade, exceto nos 15 e 30 metros (χ², p=0.84 e 0.06, respectivamente). Os camarões capturados à noite foram geralmente menores do que os capturados durante o dia (Kolmogorov-Smirnov, p<0.01). Os juvenis de Pleoticus muelleri foram encontrados principalmente à noite e tal tendência pode ter influenciado no menor tamanho médio obtido nesse período. O tipo de sedimento e a temperatura de fundo parecem influenciar o comportamento da espécie em questão e, consequentemente, a taxa de captura durante os períodos analisados.

Diel variation in the abundance and size of Pleoticus muelleri in the Ubatuba region was investigated during 2000. During each season of the year, sampling was conducted during the day and at night at 8 depths, from 5 to 40 m. The estimated number of shrimp was 955 individuals, 272 collected during the day and 683 at night. There was a difference in the abundance of P. muelleri between day and night (χ², p=2.33E-40). The abundance during the day and at night differed by season with the exception of the spring (χ², p=0.06). The abundance during both periods also differed by depth, except at 15 and 30 m, where it was not significant (χ², p=0.84 and 0.06, respectively). The shrimp caught at night were generally smaller than those caught during the day (Kolmogorov-Smirnov, p<0.01). Pleoticus muelleri juveniles were found primarily at night. This tendency could have influenced the lower mean size for this period. The sediment type and the bottom temperature appear to influence the behavior of this species and consequently the catch rate during the periods analyzed.
