Abstract The goal of this article is to analyze the different representations of health and disease associated with the epidemics of yellow fever and cholera that took place from 1867-1871 in the city of Buenos Aires. It argues that there was a very broad and heterogeneous repertoire of representations that resulted in a variety of attitudes on the part of individuals dealing with the crisis, and led to the transformation of space and social time. In order to handle this traumatic experience, people chose very different methods for maintaining social contact, which was also a way of maintaining their health.

Resumen El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar las distintas representaciones que sobre la salud y la enfermedad se asociaron con las epidemias de fiebre amarilla y cólera durante el período 1867-1871 en la ciudad de Buenos Aires. El argumento es que existió un repertorio muy amplio y heterogéneo de representaciones que se condensó en variadas actitudes individuales con la cual se enfrentó la crisis, así como una transformación del espacio y del tiempo social. Para poder sobrellevar esta experiencia traumática se buscó de maneras muy diversas mantener un vínculo social que era también al mismo tiempo una forma de mantener la salud.

In this article we will discuss the ritual dimension of funerals and its connection with an important event throughout the XIX century: the arrival and spread of cholera epidemics. The argument that we make is that epidemics caused deep social crises, affecting all spheres of social life. These traumatic events generated a double process regarding mortuary rites. On one hand, the most usual rituals were interrupted. On the other, Buenos Aires society developed supplementary rituals so that the deceased could have their funerals. The first section of this paper will present common funeral practices in Buenos Aires and the disruptive characteristics of cholera. We will see that Buenos Aires’s society had an wide and ductile repertoire of funeral practices, and though during the epidemics it would not be possible to let the most common ones happen, some others emerged to mitigate the change in the scenario unleashed by the crisis. The other process was that, in addition to demographic crises, epidemics accentuated political crises and social tensions, which were settled both during and immediately after the epidemics. To this end, a second section will examine the death of cholera of Vice President Marcos Paz during the summer of 1868. We postulate that the State was an essential factor in the tributes to some dead, especially those that allowed redirecting institutional and / or politic conflicts. Thus, our argument is that the rituals were a key element to normalize conflicts that exceeded the demographic crisis alone.

En el siguiente artículo analizaremos la dimensión ritual de los funerales y su vinculación con un evento muy presente durante todo el siglo XIX: la llegada y la diseminación de sucesivas epidemias de cólera. El argumento que sostenemos es que las mismas provocaron crisis sociales profundas, afectando todas las esferas de la vida social. Este tipo de episodios traumáticos, generó un proceso doble conectado a los ritos mortuorios. Por un lado, trastocaron los rituales más usuales, y por otro, esto ocasionó que la sociedad porteña desplegara otros suplementarios para que los difuntos tuvieran sus funerales. Para ello, en un primer apartado presentaremos las prácticas fúnebres tradicionales en Buenos Aires, así como las características disruptivas del cólera. Asimismo, veremos que la sociedad porteña tenía un repertorio amplio y dúctil de prácticas fúnebres, y si bien ante la epidemia no pudo desarrollar aquellas más habituales, surgieron otras para paliar el cambio en el escenario por la crisis desatada. Pero además de alta mortalidad, estas epidemias acentuaron crisis políticas y tensiones sociales, que se dirimieron tanto durante sus desarrollos como inmediatamente después. Para ello, en un segundo apartado, examinaremos la muerte del vicepresidente Marcos Paz, fallecido de cólera durante el verano de 1868. Postulamos que el Estado será un factor esencial en los homenajes a algunos muertos, sobre todo aquellos que le permitían reencauzar conflictos institucionales y/o políticos. De esta manera, nuestro argumento sostiene que los rituales fueron un elemento central para normalizar conflictos que excedían aquellos más evidentes.

The aim of the present work is to investigate the representations of health and disease that had been associated with cholera and yellow fever epidemics between 1867 and 1871 in the city of Buenos Aires. The main argument of this work is that these epidemics generated deep social crises, affecting all spheres of social life. In addition to the death of a large part of the population, this kind of traumatic episodes had an impact on the notions of health and illness due to the fact that they produced a series of symptoms and particular ailments on the body, causing a transformation of the patient´s condition characterized by the estrangement and rejection of those around him. Given the circumstances of a disease that transformed the body bringing a painful and inevitable death, treatments and medicines not only looked for a cure but also to return the humanity to those bodies convulsed by the disease.

La intención de este trabajo es investigar las distintas representaciones que sobre la salud y la enfermedad se asociaron con las epidemias de fiebre amarilla y cólera durante el período 1867-1871 en la ciudad de Buenos Aires. El argumento de este trabajo es que estas epidemias generaron crisis sociales profundas, afectando todas las esferas de la vida social. Este tipo de episodios traumáticos, impactó en las nociones de salud y enfermedad debido a que además de la muerte de gran parte de la población, producían una serie de síntomas y dolencias particulares sobre el cuerpo, provocando un tránsito del enfermo en su padecimiento caracterizado por el extrañamiento y rechazo de quienes lo rodeaban. Ante este escenario que transformaba al cuerpo y lo volvía sinónimo de una muerte dolorosa e inevitable, los tratamientos y remedios no sólo buscaron curar al enfermo, sino reinscribir la humanidad en esos cuerpos convulsionados por la enfermedad.

This article analyzes a particular institution that arose to combat epidemic outbreaks: the commissions of residents, focusing particularly on the cholera epidemics of 1867, 1868 and 1873, and the yellow fever epidemics of 1871 and 1886. The commissions of residents have been mostly interpreted by historiography as a response of the society due to the Government's inaction, mainly at a municipal level. This article revisits this statement and argues that epidemics brought about the possibility to create, reform and transform specific areas of the municipal government, mainly those related to health and hygiene. We have called this process institutionalization vector, because a series of measures and organization forms that appeared at first temporarily due to the cholera and yellow fever epidemics, were then institutionalized. We also argue that the unquestionable relevance of the 1871 yellow fever epidemic should not prevent the study of other epidemic outbreaks that were also very significant in the development of the commissions of residents and, most importantly, contributed to the institutional strengthening of municipal governments. From this standpoint, it is possible to show areas of interaction, subordination, independence and conflict among the commissions of residents and the municipal governments and the provincial government of Buenos Aires.

El artículo analiza un tipo particular de institución surgida para combatir las epidemias: las comisiones de vecinos. Para ello ponemos el foco en las epidemias de cólera de 1867, 1868 y 1873, y en las de fiebre amarilla, ocurridas en 1871 y 1886. Las comisiones de vecinos han sido interpretadas mayormente por la historiografía como una respuesta de la sociedad frente a la parálisis del Estado, sobre todo en su dimensión municipal. Este artículo revisa esta afirmación y argumenta que las epidemias generaron la posibilidad de crear, reformar y convertiráreas específicas del Estado municipal, sobre todo aquellas vinculadas con la salud e higiene. Hemos denominado a este proceso vector de institucionalización, dado que con las epidemias de cólera y de fiebre amarilla aparecieron -en principio, transitoriamente- una serie de medidas y formas de organización que luego fueron institucionalizadas. Además, sostenemos que la indudable relevancia de la fiebre amarilla de 1871 no debe obstruir el estudio de otras epidemias, en la medida en que estas fueron también muy significativas en el proceso de gestación de las comisiones de vecinos y, más importante, contribuyeron al fortalecimiento institucional de la municipalidad. Esta mirada permite mostrar espacios de interacción, subordinación, independencia y/o enfrentamiento producidos entre las comisiones de vecinos y el Estado municipal y provincial de la provincia de Buenos Aires.
