ABSTRACT Nitrogen and phosphorus are essential elements for the growth and performance of organisms, and the environmental N:P ratio can determine the biomass and structure of algal communities. We investigated the effects in the N:P molar ratio changes on epipelon and phytoplankton chlorophyll-a under eutrophic conditions. An enrichment experiment was performed in open-bottom mesocosms to simulate P limitation, N limitation, and good N and P availability. Under eutrophic conditions, the combined availability of N and P enhanced phytoplankton bloom, while an increase in P limitation resulted in the loss of phytoplankton biomass. Under conditions of high P limitation, there was significantly loss of epipelon biomass. No change in the N:P ratio led to a significant increase in algal biomass in the epipelon. In conclusion, changes in the N:P molar ratio can affect the growth of phytoplankton and epipelic algae under eutrophic conditions. RESUMO Nitrogênio e o fósforo são elementos essenciais para o crescimento e desempenho dos organismos e a razão N:P ambiental pode determinar a biomassa e estrutura das comunidades algais. Nós investigamos os efeitos de mudanças na razão molar N:P sobre a clorofila-a do epipelon e fitoplâncton em condições eutróficas. Em mesocosmos de fundo aberto, realizou-se um experimento de enriquecimento para simular a limitação de P, limitação de N e boa disponibilidade de N e P. Em condições eutróficas, a disponibilidade combinada de N e P intensificou a floração do fitoplâncton, enquanto um aumento na limitação de P resultou em perda na biomassa do fitoplâncton. Resumo Objetivo O conhecimento das características hidrológicas é essencial para a compreensão dos processos ecológicos nas planícies de inundação, o que pode subsidiar um gerenciamento sustentável. Nós avaliamos as variações ambientais em uma lagoa rasa de planície de inundação, localizada na Chapada Diamantina, Andaraí, Bahia. Nosso objetivo foi identificar as fases do ciclo hidrológico e sua influência na densidade de desmídias, um grupo de algas conhecido por seu potencial como bioindicador de mudanças tróficas. Métodos Amostragens bimestrais foram realizadas em quatro pontos da lagoa. Foram determinadas as variáveis abióticas (temperatura, condutividade, pH, transparência, profundidade, oxigênio dissolvido, concentração de nutrientes totais e dissolvidos) e bióticas (cobertura de macrófitas, clorofila-a do fitoplâncton e densidade de desmídias). O Índice de Estado Trófico (IET) foi calculado com base na clorofila-a do fitoplâncton e concentração de fósforo total. Resultados A lagoa foi caracterizada por águas bem oxigenadas, levemente ácidas e com baixa condutividade elétrica. De acordo com o IET, a lagoa variou de mesotrófica a hipereutrófica durante o período de estudo. Os meses mais secos (agosto e outubro) foram marcados pela elevada transparência, baixa profundidade, concentração de nitrogênio e cobertura de macrófitas. O maior valor de precipitação acumulada foi registrado em dezembro, quando houve um aumento da profundidade e a diminuição da condutividade elétrica e concentração de PT. Evidenciou-se ocorrência de duas fases limnológicas, as quais foram determinadas pela profundidade e concentração de nutrientes. Abstract Aim Knowledge of hydrological characteristics is essential for understanding ecological processes in floodplains, which can support sustainable management. We evaluated environmental variations in a shallow floodplain lagoon located in the Chapada Diamantina, Andaraí, Bahia. We aim to identify phases of the hydrologic cycle and their influence on desmid density, which is a group of algae known for its potential as bioindicator of trophic changes. Methods Bimonthly samplings were performed at four points in the lagoon. Abiotic (temperature, conductivity, pH, transparency, depth, dissolved oxygen, total and dissolved nutrients) and biotic (macrophyte cover, phytoplankton chlorophyll-a, and desmid density) variables were determined. The Trophic State Index (TSI) was calculated based on phytoplankton chlorophyll-a, and total phosphorus concentration. Results The lagoon was characterized by well-oxygenated, slightly acidic waters with low electrical conductivity. According to the TSI, the lagoon varied from mesotrophic to hypereutrophic during the study period. The driest months (August and October) were marked by high water transparency, low depth, nitrogen concentration, and macrophyte coverage. The highest value of accumulated precipitation was registered in December, when there was an increase in depth and a decrease in electrical conductivity and PT concentration. Two phases of the hydrologic cycle were evidenced and determined by the depth and nutrient concentrations. The highest abundance of desmids occurred at the end of the rainy season when the nutrient availability and pH were higher, and the depth was reduced. Abstract: Aim Zooplankton functional groups play an important role in lake functioning and can readily respond to environmental changes and may be associated with phytoplankton changes. In warmer regions, zooplankton species have a smaller body size, which decreases their grazing capacity, attenuating top-down control throughout phytoplankton. We evaluated changes in density and biomass of zooplankton functional groups and their relationship with algal groups in horizontal reservoir zonation (pelagic, sublittoral, and eulittoral zones) of the shallow reservoir. We hypothesize that the density and biomass of zooplankton functional groups are associated with fluctuations in the phytoplankton groups in horizontal reservoir zonation. Methods Changes in the structure of the zooplankton functional group and the controlling limnological variables were verified at three sampling stations: pelagic, sublittoral, and eulittoral zones in a mesotrophic reservoir. Results Zooplankton species were distributed in seven functional groups. Em regiões mais quentes, as espécies de zooplâncton apresentam pequeno tamanho corporal, o que diminui sua capacidade de pastejo e atenua o controle de cima para baixo sobre o fitoplâncton. Resumo: Objetivo: Este estudo avaliou e comparou as alterações nos teores e taxas de acumulação de fósforo total (PT) e metais (Cd, Cu, Ni e Pb) no perifíton em diferentes tipos de substratos (PET e vidro) nos períodos chuvoso e seco em um reservatório eutrófico raso. Assim, o potencial do perifíton como uma biotecnologia verde para remediar a eutrofização e promover a remoção de metais foi investigado. Métodos: Substratos flutuantes de madeira (n = 3) contendo lâminas de vidro e PET foram submersos próximos a uma entrada de esgoto. O tempo de exposição do substrato foi de cerca de 33 dias em cada período. Resultados: Os teores de PT e de metais (Cu, Ni e Pb) no perifíton foram influenciados pela sazonalidade e os maiores valores foram encontrados na estação chuvosa. O conteúdo de metais do perifíton foi significativamente diferente entre os substratos de vidro e PET, mas nenhuma diferença foi detectada com o conteúdo de PT. Conclusões: A sazonalidade foi um fator determinante para a imobilização de PT e metais no perifíton. O maior potencial de imobilização de PT e metais pelo perifíton foi detectado no período chuvoso. Abstract: Aim: This study evaluated and compared the changes in the Total Phosphorus (TP) and metals (Cd, Cu, Ni and Pb) contents and accumulation rates in the periphyton on different substrate types (PET and glass) in wet and dry periods in a shallow eutrophic reservoir. Thus, the potential of periphyton as a green biotechnology to remediate the eutrophication and promoting metal uptake were investigated. Methods: Floating substrate carriers made of wood (n = 3) containing glass and PET slides were submerged close to a sewage inflow site. Substrate exposure time was about 33 days in each period. Results: Periphyton TP and metal contents (Cu, Ni and Pb) were influenced by seasonality and the highest contents were found in the wet period. Periphyton metal contents were significantly different between glass or PET substrates, but no differences were detected in the TP contents. Conclusions: Seasonality was a determining factor for immobilization of TP and metals in periphyton. The highest potential of TP and metals immobilization by periphyton were detected in the wet period. Our results provided insights that the periphyton can contribute to remediate eutrophication and metal removal in aquatic ecosystems.

Resumo: Objetivos Avaliamos o perifíton em substrato artificial no efluente de esgoto tratado, no percurso do efluente, dentro e após o banco de macrófitas em um reservatório raso hipereutrófico. Especificamente, investigamos a relação entre os conteúdos de N e P e a biomassa de algas no perifíton com a disponibilidade de N e P do ambiente, com foco na retenção de nutrientes. Métodos A amostragem do perifíton foi realizada no efluente e ao longo do percurso do efluente, dentro e em dois locais após o banco de macrófitas. A amostragem do perifíton foi realizada após 30 dias da colonização. As variáveis abióticas foram determinadas no efluente do esgoto e na água do reservatório. Resultados Os valores de biomassa e conteúdo N e P no perifíton foram significativamente diferentes entre os locais de amostragem. As maiores concentrações de nutrientes foram encontradas nos locais com efluente. As maiores concentrações de clorofila-a no perifíton foram encontradas dentro e após o banco de macrófitas, enquanto os maiores teores de N e P foram encontrados no efluente e no percurso do efluente. Conclusões Em conclusão, os conteúdos de N e P no perifíton foram associados à disponibilidade de N e P, evidenciando a capacidade de retenção de nutrientes da comunidade. Nossos resultados sugerem que o perifíton em substrato artificial pode ser uma ferramenta para a remoção de N e P do efluente do sistema de tratamento de esgoto, contribuindo para minimizar a carga de nutrientes descarregada em um reservatório raso.

Abstract: Aim We evaluated the periphyton on artificial substrate in the treated sewage effluent, effluent patch, inside and after the macrophyte stand in a shallow hypereutrophic reservoir. Specifically, we investigated the relationship between N and P contents and algal biomass in the periphyton with N and P availability, focusing on nutrient retention. Methods Periphyton sampling was performed at the effluent inlet, effluent path, inside, and two sites after macrophyte stand. Periphyton sampling was performed after 30 days of colonization. Abiotic variables were determined in the sewage effluent and in the reservoir water. Results Biomass and N and P contents in the periphyton were significantly different among sampling sites. The highest nutrient concentrations were found in the sampling sites with effluent. The highest periphyton chlorophyll-a were found inside and after the macrophyte stand, while N and P contents were the highest in the effluent inlet and effluent. Conclusions In conclusion, N and P contents in the periphyton were associated with N and P availability, evidencing the ability of nutrient retention of the community. Our findings suggest that periphyton on artificial substrate can as a potential tool for removing N and P from the effluent from the sewage treatment system, contributing to minimizing the nutrient load discharged in a shallow reservoir.

The Garças Reservoir history reveals a remarkable case of human impacts resulting from the urbanization pressure over the 20th century. It is a shallow tropical system located in the Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga, a protected area within the city of São Paulo, São Paulo State, Brazil. Based on a comprehensive dataset (1997-2017), we evaluated the water quality temporal change using a trophic state index (TSI); in addition, we also verified whether the management procedures improved the water quality. Mechanical removal of macrophytes (1999) triggered an abrupt change from eutrophic-supereutrophic to the hypereutrophic state with feedback mechanisms. After five years (2005), a slowdown in the internal P loading process occurred, followed by the installation of the secondary wastewater treatment in the city zoo two years later (2007). Both processes promoted the beginning of water quality improvement. In 2011, TSI first dropped to supereutrophic state with the temporary diversion of the sewage effluent from the São Paulo State Department of Agriculture. This effluent was finally inactivated (2014) and the system sustained the supereutrophic state. TSI responded well to the historical key events related to the control of sewage effluents. After 11 years from the permanent impact of macrophytes removal, current results have demonstrated improved health of the system. It is absolutely necessary to improve the sewage treatment from the city zoo to continue the reservoir recovery considering that since 2014 it has been the only external phosphorous loading to Garças Reservoir. The history of Garças Reservoir can offer a better understanding of wrong management strategies and the vulnerability of tropical shallow systems to eutrophication.

ABSTRACT Phytoplankton structure is influenced by environmental factors, seasonal cycles and the trophic state of the system. The objective of the present study was to identify guilds of phytoplankton species that are representative of seasonality and trophic status. We evaluated phytoplankton biomass and species composition in five tropical reservoirs, with different trophic states and during rainy and dry periods. At most of the sampling sites, total biomass was higher during the rainy season. Moreover, high cyanobacterial biomass was observed in all reservoirs except for one of the mesotrophic reservoirs, which had no significant contribution from the group. Phytoplankton guilds associated with the trophic gradient and seasonality were identified. Additionally, trophic status was determined to be the most important community structure factor. The results emphasize the importance of taxonomic identification when monitoring phytoplankton structure and autoecology. Furthermore, these aquatic organisms are highly sensitive to environmental variations, making them useful tools for evaluating and/or monitoring the ecological condition of aquatic ecosystems.

Resumo: Objetivo Mudanças estruturais no fitoplâncton foram avaliadas em três reservatórios em cascata, um ultraoligotrófico e dois oligotróficos, no verão e no inverno de 2014. Avaliou-se a variação da biomassa fitoplanctônica, a composição de espécies e os códons (grupos funcionais) ao longo de um perfil vertical e outro longitudinal. Métodos Foram selecionados quatro locais de amostragem na primeira represa em cascata (Cachoeira do França) e três em cada uma das demais duas (Cachoeira da Fumaça e Serraria). As amostras foram coletadas ao longo dos perfis vertical e longitudinal das represas. Foram determinados o biovolume das espécies e os códons que foram expressos em termos de biomassa. Resultados 18 códons foram identificados e associados às condições limnológicas dos reservatórios. A composição e a biomassa das espécies descritoras mudaram conforme as estações do ano. Códon B constituído principalmente por Discostella stelligera foi o mais frequente nas três represas e em ambos os períodos de amostragem. Conclusões Os resultados mostraram que a sazonalidade foi um fator importante para as mudanças na composição de espécies e dos códons do fitoplâncton. No entanto, o efeito da cascata sobre a estrutura do fitoplâncton foi demonstrado pela expressiva e constante contribuição de Ceratium furcoides (códon LM) no inverno e de Discostella stelligera (códon B) em ambos os períodos de amostragem nas três represas estudadas.

Abstract: Aim Structural changes in phytoplankton was evaluated in one ultraoligotrophic and two oligotrophic cascading reservoirs during two climatic periods (austral winter and summer) of 2014. Changes in phytoplankton biomass, species composition, and codons (functional groups) were evaluated along a vertical and a longitudinal profile. Methods Four sampling sites were selected for the first reservoir in the cascade (Cachoeira do França) and three for each of the other two reservoirs (Cachoeira da Fumaça and Serraria). Samples were collected along a vertical and a longitudinal profile. Species biomass and codons ‘sensu’ Reynolds were identified and expressed in terms of biomass. Results 18 codons were identified and associated to the reservoirs’ limnological conditions. Composition and biomass of descriptor species changed among seasons. Codon B consisting mainly of Discostella stelligera was the most frequent in all reservoirs in both climatic seasons. Conclusions Our findings showed that seasonality was the key factor for the species composition and phytoplankton codons changes. However, the cascade effect on phytoplankton structure was shown by the continuous contribution of Ceratium furcoides (codon LM) during the winter, and of Discostella stelligera (codon B) in both sampling periods in all three reservoirs.

Resumo Objetivo Fitotelma desempenha um papel importante no crescimento das plantas e funcionamento do ecossistema, mas este microcosmo aquático natural é pouco investigado. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar as variações sazonais (estações seca e chuvosa) e espaciais (trilha florestal e córrego) do fitotelma de Nidularium longiflorum, bromélia que ocorre na Mata Atlântica. Métodos As variáveis bióticas e abióticas foram analisadas em fitotelmas de bromélias-tanque. A biomassa foi analisada pela massa seca livre de cinzas e concentração de clorofila-a. Resultados As variáveis abióticas no ambiente fitotélmico das bromélias variaram entre locais de amostragem e estações. Os valores de temperatura, condutividade elétrica e de nitrogênio total foram significativamente diferentes entre períodos climáticos e locais. A clorofila-a e a massa seca livre de cinzas (matéria orgânica) no fitotelma foram significativamente diferentes entre os locais de amostragem. Foram identificados 11 gêneros de algas no fitotelma. A ordenação unidades amostrais no eixo 1 da PCA evidenciou a variação sazonal das condições ambientais. Conclusões Nossos resultados indicam que as condições ambientais e microambientais não favorecem o desenvolvimento da comunidade de algas no fitotelma. Biomassa e variáveis abióticas no fitotelma de Nidularium longiflorum mudaram sazonalmente, porém a acumulação de biomassa foi fortemente influenciada pelas características locais.

Abstract Aim Phytotelm plays an important role in plant growth and ecosystem functioning, but this natural aquatic microcosm is poorly known. We evaluated the seasonal (dry and rainy seasons) and spatial variations (forest trail and stream sites) of the phytotelm in Nidularium longiflorum, bromeliad that occurs in the Atlantic Forest. Methods Abiotic and biotic variables were measured in tank-bromeliad phytotelms. The biomass was analyzed by ash-free dry mass and chlorophyll-a concentration. Results Abiotic variables measured in the phytotelmic environment of bromeliads varied between sampling sites and seasons. Temperature, electrical conductivity and total nitrogen values were significantly different between seasons and sites. Chlorophyll-a and ash-free dry mass (organic matter) in phytotelm were significantly different between sampling sites. Eleven genera of algae in the phytotelm were identified. PCA axis 1 ordination evidenced the seasonal variation of environmental conditions. Conclusions Our findings suggest that environmental and micro-environmental conditions do not favor the development of algal community in the phytotelm. Biomass and abiotic variables in phytotelm of Nidularium longiflorum change seasonally, however biomass accumulation was strongly influenced by site characteristics.

ABSTRACT Periphyton has a strong relationship with aquatic macrophytes, which are key components of spatial heterogeneity in the littoral zone. We evaluated the relationship between the community structure of periphytic algae on Utricularia foliosa and macrophyte richness and coverage and limnological variables in a shallow reservoir. Water sampling for physical, chemical and biological analyses was performed at sites with contrasting macrophyte coverage and richness in each of the four main seasons of the year. Periphytic algae were evaluated for density and species composition. High densities of diatoms and filamentous cyanobacteria in the periphyton were observed at sites with high macrophyte coverage and richness, while high abundances of flagellates of Chrysophyceae and Chlorophyceae were found at sites with low macrophyte richness. Light and nutrient availability were determining factors of the temporal variability of the periphytic algae community. We concluded that the interaction between seasonality and spatial heterogeneity (macrophyte community structure and limnological variables), explained the variability in species composition and algal density of the periphyton. Therefore, seasonality and spatial heterogeneity acted as determining factors for periphyton structure on a free-floating macrophyte with high structural complexity.

Resumo Objetivo A diversidade de peixes em dois ambientes lacustres, uma lagoa conectada (lagoa do Barbosa) ao rio e outro artificial (reservatório das Ninfeias) foram determinadas nos períodos seco e chuvoso de 2015. Métodos Espécimes foram capturados utilizando-se redes de emalhar. Parâmetros ambientais como a temperatura, condutividade elétrica, pH, oxigênio dissolvido e transparência da água foram medidos durante os dois períodos. Resultados Foram coletados 546 exemplares de peixes, de 9 famílias, 12 gêneros e 15 espécies das ordens Characiformes, Siluriformes, Cichliformes e Gymnotiformes. Pimelodus maculatus foi a espécie mais abundante na lagoa do Barbosa. No reservatório foram capturadas duas espécies, Geophagus brasiliensis e Hoplias malabaricus, com predomínio da primeira. As espécies dominantes nos ambientes estudados corresponderam a 48,71% do total de exemplares. A composição da ictiofauna da lagoa revelou uma maior riqueza da ordem Characiformes (66,7%). Siluriformes e Gymnotiformes representaram 13,3% cada e a ordem Cichliformes 6,7% do total de espécies. No reservatório artificial houve contribuição equivalente de Cichliformes e de Characiformes. A diversidade foi maior na lagoa (H’ = 2,05) e menor no reservatório (H’ = 0,34). Diferenças significativas (p<0,05) da diversidade foram encontradas entre a lagoa conectada e o reservatório. A captura de peixes foi menor na seca (24,7%) que no período chuvoso (75,3%). A PCA separou os dois ambientes e os períodos pela diferença na condutividade elétrica da água. A prevalência de espécies das ordens Characiformes e Siluriformes obedece ao padrão encontrado para a ictiofauna da região Neotropical. Conclusões A análise do padrão de diversidade da ictiofauna dos ambientes estudados mostrou que o ambiente conectado ao rio apresenta maior diversidade quando comparado ao reservatório artificial. A presença de macrófitas aquáticas de diferentes espécies pode ser um fator regulador na estruturação da comunidade de peixes da lagoa conectada ao rio.

Abstract Aim Fish diversity in two lentic environments: a lake connected (Barbosa lake) to a river and an artificial reservoir (Ninfeias reservoir) were determined in the dry and rainy periods in 2015. We expected to find more diversity in the connected lake and greater abundance in the reservoir. Methods Specimens were caught using gill nets. Moreover, environmental parameters such as temperature, electrical conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen and water transparency were measured during the two periods. Results 546 specimens were collected from 9 families, 12 genera and 15 species of the orders Characiformes, Siluriformes, Cichliformes and Gymnotiformes. Pimelodus maculatus was the most abundant species in the connected lake. Two species were caught from the reservoir: Geophagus brasiliensis and Hoplias malabaricus, the former being predominant. The dominant species in the studied environments corresponded to 48.71% of the total number of specimens. The ichthyofaunal composition from the lake showed a high richness of the order Characiformes (66.7%). Siluriformes and Gymnotiformes represented 13.3% each and the order Cichliformes only 6.7% of the total number of species. In the artificial reservoir, there was an equivalent contribution of Cichliformes and Characiformes. The diversity was higher in the lake (H' = 2.05) and lower in the reservoir (H' = 0.34). Significant differences (p<0.05) of diversity were found between the connected lake and the reservoir. The catch of fish was lower in the dry season (24.7%) than the rainy season (62.3%). The principal component analysis (PCA) showed segregation between the two environments and periods, which was due to the difference in water electrical conductivity. The prevalence of species of the orders Characiformes and Siluriformes follows the pattern found for the ichthyofauna in the Neotropical region. Conclusions The analysis of distinct patterns of diversity and abundance of the ichthyofauna from the studied environments showed that the environment connected to the river has a high diversity when compared to the reservoir. The presence of aquatic macrophytes of different species may be a regulating factor in structuring the fish community of the lake connected to the river.

Resumo Objetivo O presente estudo avaliou as formas de vida e a estrutura taxonômica da comunidade de algas perifíticas sobre Utricularia foliosa L. (folha modificada e caule) e substrato artificial durante quatro estações em um reservatório tropical raso. Métodos Nós comparamos o perifíton sobre substrato natural e artificial para avaliar a influência do tipo de substrato sobre a estrutura taxonômica da comunidade de algas. Bancos mono específicos de U. foliosa foram selecionados. Amostras de água e perifíton foram coletadas no interior dos bancos de U. foliosa no outono (abril/2010), inverno (julho/2010), primavera (novembro/2010) e verão (fevereiro/2011). Fio de náilon foi usado como substrato artificial. Com base no biovolume algal, a estrutura da comunidade foi avaliada através das formas de vida, riqueza de espécies, diversidade e composição de espécies. Resultados Diversidade de espécies foi significativamente diferente apenas entre as estações do ano. As formas de vida e riqueza de espécies diferiram entre os tipos de substrato e estações. Algas filamentosas emaranhadas apresentaram maior biovolume no perifíton em substrato artificial e algas unicelulares flageladas tiveram maior biovolume em substrato natural. A composição de espécies mudou entre as estações e as espécies descritoras diferiu entre os tipos de substrato. A classificação taxonômica a nível de espécie respondeu claramente ao tipo de substrato. Conclusões Nós concluímos que estrutura taxonômica e formas de vida das algas perifíticas sobre substrato artificial teve baixa representatividade do perifíton sobre U. foliosa. O tipo de substrato influenciou fortemente a relação perifíton-Utricularia.

Abstract Aim Present study evaluated the life forms and taxonomic structure of the periphytic algae community on Utricularia foliosa L. (modified leaf and stem) and artificial substrate during the four seasons in a tropical shallow reservoir. Methods We evaluated the periphyton on natural and artificial substrate in order to evaluate the influence of substrate type on the taxonomic structure of algal community. Monospecific stands of U. foliosa were selected. Water and periphyton sampling were performed within U. foliosa stands in the autumn (April/2010), winter (July/2010), spring (November/2010) and summer (February/2011). Nylon thread was used as the artificial substrate. The community structure was evaluated through life forms, species richness, diversity and species composition. Results Species diversity was significantly different only among seasons. The life forms and species richness were different between substrate types and seasons. Entangled filamentous algae had higher biovolume in the periphyton on artificial substrate and unicellular flagellated algae had higher biovolume on natural substrate. Species composition changed among the seasons and species descriptors differed among substrates types. Species-level taxonomic classification responded clearly to the substrate type. Conclusions We concluded that the taxonomic structure and life forms of periphytic algae on artificial substrate poorly represented the natural periphyton on U. foliosa. The type of substrate strongly influenced the periphyton–Utricularia relationship.

Resumo Objetivo: Nós identificamos e analisamos as fases de desenvolvimento do perifíton (exponencial e perda) em substrato artificial com base na taxa de acumulação de biomassa no período seco e chuvoso em um reservatório mesotrófico raso (Lago das Ninfeias, Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga, São Paulo, Brasil). Foi avaliado o tempo de colonização requerido para a mudança de fase de desenvolvimento, a qual também foi relacionada com as variáveis limnológicas. Métodos Foram analisadas variáveis limnológicas e do perifíton (clorofila-a, massa seca livre de cinzas, taxa acumulação líquida e bruta) durante 98 dias de exposição do substrato. Resultados No período chuvoso, a fase exponencial de acumulação de biomassa foi até o 28° dia de colonização, sendo seguida por uma fase de flutuação (35º-77° dia) e fase de perda (84°-98º dia). Na estação seca, a fase exponencial foi até o 35° dia, sendo seguida por uma fase de perda (42°-63° dia) e de flutuação (70° dia e 77° dia). Nesta estação, observou-se o início de uma nova fase exponencial de acumulação de biomassa (84° ao 98° dia). O pico de biomassa foi registrado no 42º dia no período chuvoso e no 98º dia no período seco. A biomassa e a taxa de acumulação bruta e líquida foram maiores no período seco do que no chuvoso. Conclusão A biomassa e a taxa de acumulação líquida e bruta do perifíton foram maiores no período seco, o qual foi caracterizado pela alta concentração de nitrogênio total e transparência da água e baixa pluviosidade. Concluímos que a taxa de acumulação de biomassa e duração das fases de desenvolvimento (exponencial, perda e flutuação) do perifíton mudaram com condições limnológicas em cada período climático no reservatório tropical raso estudado.

Abstract Aim: We identified and analyzed the developmental phases (exponential and loss) of periphyton on artificial substrates based on biomass accrual rate in dry and rainy seasons in a shallow mesotrophic reservoir (Ninfeias Reservoir, Parque Estadual das Fontes do Ipiranga, São Paulo, Brazil). We evaluated the colonization time required for the developmental phase to change, as well as related limnological variables. Methods Samplings were carried out weekly, totaling 98 days of substrates exposure. We analyzed the limnological and periphyton variables (chlorophyll a, ash free dry mass, net and gross accrual rate). Results Maximum biomass occurred on the 42nd day in rainy season and on the 98th day in dry season. In the rainy season, the exponential phase of biomass accrual continued until the 28th day of colonization, followed by a fluctuation phase (35th to 77th day) and then a loss phase (84th to 98th days). In the dry season, the exponential phase continued until the 35th day, followed by a loss phase (42th to 63rd day) and then a fluctuation phase (70th and 77th day). In the same season, we observed the beginning of a new exponential phase (84th to 98th day). The biomass peak was recorded on the 42nd colonization day in the rainy season and on the 98th day in the dry season. Biomass and gross and net accrual were higher in the dry season than in the rainy season. Conclusions Periphyton biomass and net and gross accrual rates were higher during the dry season, which was characterized by high total nitrogen concentration, water transparency and low rainfall. We concluded that periphyton biomass accrual and the duration of the developmental phases (exponential, loss and fluctuation) changed with variations in limnological conditions in each climatic period in the tropical shallow reservoir studied.

Resumo: Objetivo Este estudo avaliou as mudanças temporais da estrutura do fitoplâncton e do epifíton e suas relações com os fatores limnológicos em um reservatório urbano hipereutrófico (Reservatório Rasgão, Brasil). Métodos Nós coletamos amostras de água e fitoplâncton em diferentes profundidades em dois locais (barragem e próximo da entrada do tributário) no verão e inverno de 2010. O epifíton em Salvinia spp. foi amostrado somente no local próximo da entrada do tributário. Nós determinamos as variáveis limnológicas e os atributos estruturais (composição de espécies, densidade, biovolume, espécies descritoras, diversidade) para ambas as comunidades. Resultados A densidade do fitoplâncton e a densidade e o biovolume do epifíton foram maiores no inverno (estação seca), no qual ocorreu as maiores concentrações de nutrientes e menor vazão. Chlorophyceae foi dominante no fitoplâncton em ambos os períodos e Cyanobacteria foi a segunda classe mais abundante no inverno. No epifíton, Bacillariophyceae foi dominante no verão e Cyanobacteria no inverno. O aumento da disponibilidade de luz e da vazão pode ter favorecido a alta riqueza e diversidade de espécies no verão. Conclusão As mudanças temporais na estrutura do fitoplâncton e do epifíton em Salvinia foram mais relacionadas com o aumento na disponibilidade de nutrientes (nitrogênio e fósforo) e às variações na vazão em um reservatório hipereutrófico.

Abstract: Aim This study evaluated the temporal changes of phytoplankton and epiphyton structure and their relationships with limnological factors in an urban hypereutrophic reservoir (Rasgão Reservoir, Brazil). Methods We collected water sample and phytoplankton in different depths at two sites (dam and near tributary input) in summer and winter 2010. Epiphyton on Salvinia spp. was sampled only at site near the tributary input. We determined limnological variables and structural attributes (species composition, density, biovolume, descriptors species, diversity) for both communities. Results Phytoplankton density and epiphyton density and biovolume were higher in the winter (dry season), which occurred the higher nutrient concentrations and lower water flow. Chlorophyceae was dominant in the phytoplankton in both period and Cyanobacteria was the second most abundant class in the winter. In the epiphyton, Bacillariophyceae was dominant in the summer and Cyanobacteria in the winter. The increase in light availability and water flow can have provided high species richness and diversity in the summer. Conclusion Temporal changes in the structure of phytoplankton and epiphyton on Salvinia were more related to increased nutrients availability (nitrogen and phosphorus) and flow variations in a hypereutrophic reservoir.
