ABSTRACT: Endurance and flat race are entirely different efforts and thus require completely different organism adaptations to achieve the performance. This study aimed to examine the difference in basal lipid metabolism in Arabian horses undergoing different training regimens for endurance and race and possible gender differences. The study enrolled sixty male and female’ Arabian horses; thirty were trained for race, and thirty were trained for 80 km endurance races. The analyses included body condition score, body weight, body mass index, % body fat, and blood collected to determine triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density proteins, high-density proteins, and non-esterified fatty acids. Ultrasonography was used to measure the thickness of the subcutaneous fat layer in the longissimus dorsi muscle, as well as the thickness of the rump fat and the cross-section of the gluteus medius muscle. This study showed that lipid profile is more influenced by type of exercise than by gender, being more efficient on endurance horses. RESUMO: Enduro e corrida são esportes completamente diferentes e, portanto, requerem adaptações diferentes do organismo para alcançar o desempenho físico. Este estudo teve como objetivo examinar a diferença no metabolismo lipídico basal em cavalos Árabes submetidos a diferentes regimes de treinamento, para resistência e para corrida e possível diferença de gênero. Sessenta cavalos árabes machos e fêmeas foram estudados, trinta treinados para corrida e trinta treinados para corridas de enduro de 80 km. As análises realizadas foram escore de condição corporal, peso corporal, índice de massa corporal, porcentagem de gordura corporal e sangue coletado para determinação de triglicerídeos, colesterol total, proteínas de baixa densidade, proteínas de alta densidade e ácidos graxos não esterificados. A ultrassonografia da espessura da camada de gordura subcutânea foi realizada sobre o músculo longissimus dorsi, espessura da gordura da garupa e seção transversal do músculo glúteo médio. Árabes de corrida apresentaram maiores valores de todos os parâmetros lipídicos estudados e área de secção transversa do músculo glúteo médio. Não houve diferença quanto ao gênero quando estudamos machos e fêmeas praticantes do mesmo esporte, com exceção da região dos músculos glúteos. Os resultados deste estudo mostram que o perfil lipídico é mais influenciado pelo tipo de exercício do que pelo gênero, sendo mais eficiente nos cavalos de enduro. Abstract Maintenance of snakes at Butantan Institute started in the last century, intending to produce a different antivenom serum to reduce death caused by snakebites. Through a successful campaign coordinated by Vital Brazil, farmers sent venomous snakes to Butantan Institute by the railway lines with no cost. From 1908 to 1962, the snakes were kept in an outdoor serpentarium, where venom extraction was performed every 15 days. During this period, the snake average survival was 15 days. In 1963, the snakes were transferred to an adapted building, currently called Laboratory of Herpetology (LH), to be maintained in an intensive system. Although the periodicity of venom extraction remained the same, animal average survival increased to two months. With the severe serum crisis in 1983, the Ministry of Health financed remodeling for the three public antivenom producers, and with this support, the LH could be improved. Air conditioning and exhausting systems were installed in the rooms, besides the settlement of critical hygienic-sanitary managements to increase the welfare of snakes. In the early 1990s, snake survival was ten months. Over the years to the present day, several improvements have been made in the intensive serpentarium, as the establishment of two quarantines, feeding with thawed rodents, an interval of two months between venom extraction routines, and monitoring of snake health through laboratory tests. With these new protocols, average snake survival increased significantly, being eight years for the genus Bothrops, ten years for genus Crotalus and Lachesis, and four years for the genus Micrurus. Aiming the production of venoms of good quality, respect for good management practices is essential for the maintenance of snakes in captivity. New techniques and efficient management must always be sought to improve animal welfare, the quality of the venom produced, and the safety of those working directly with the venomous snakes.

RESUMO Estimativas acuradas de precipitação são necessárias para avaliar as vazões dos rios, analisar riscos ligados à água (enchentes e secas) e quantificar a disponibilidade hídrica para uma ampla gama de usos da água, como abastecimento, agricultura, navegação e produção de energia. Especialmente no contexto das operações no setor elétrico brasileiro, onde o sistema elétrico é essencialmente hidrotérmico e mais de 65% de sua produção vem da geração hidrelétrica, a precipitação observada em tempo real desempenha um papel fundamental como principal variável de entrada dos modelos hidrológicos e de previsão de vazões. Assim, é crucial construir conhecimento sobre a precipitação das bacias hidrográficas e quantificar suas incertezas. Neste artigo, avaliamos duas fontes de dados de precipitação em tempo real (ou quase tempo real), o conjunto de dados TRMM-MERGE do CPETC e o conjunto de dados CPC, distribuído pela NOAA. Nossa avaliação é baseada em 41 bacias hidrográficas na América do Sul e abrange o período 1997-2017. Investigamos diferenças para diferentes resoluções de tempo (precipitação diária, mensal e anual) e seu impacto na simulação de vazões. Diferenças substanciais foram encontradas entre as duas fontes de dados, que parecem ser amplificadas na segunda década. Uma tendência espacial foi encontrada em direção a valores mais altos de precipitação TRMM-MERGE, em relação aos valores do CPC, à medida que se desloca para o norte e oeste na área de estudo. Também encontramos evidências de que as diferenças na precipitação se propagam nas vazões simuladas, com resultados que indicam que grandes diferenças percentuais na precipitação resultam em diferenças percentuais ainda maiores nas vazões.

ABSTRACT Accurate estimates of precipitation amounts are necessary to evaluate river flows, assess water-related risks (floods and drought) and quantify water availability for a broad range of water uses, such as water supply, agriculture, navigation and energy production. Especially in the context of operations in the Brazilian electricity sector, where the electrical system is essentially hydrothermal and more than 65% of its production comes from hydroelectric generation, real-time observed precipitation plays a key role as a primary input for hydrological models and river flow forecasting. It is thus crucial to build knowledge on and quantify river basin precipitation and its uncertainties. In this paper, we evaluate two sources of real-time (or near real-time) precipitation data, the TRMM-MERGE dataset from the CPETC and the CPC dataset, distributed by NOAA. Our assessment is based on 41 river basins in South America and covers the period 1997-2017. We investigated differences for different time resolutions (daily, monthly and annual precipitation) and their impact on the simulation of streamflows. Substantial differences were found between the two data sources, which seem to be amplified in the second decade. A spatial trend was found towards higher TRMM-MERGE precipitation values than CPC values when moving from north and west in the study area. We also found evidence that differences in precipitation propagate to simulated flows, with large percent differences in precipitation resulting in even larger percent differences in streamflow.

RESUMO Este artigo enfatiza a caracterização espaço-temporal de secas na bacia do rio São Francisco, com base na análise de ondaletas de séries temporais do Índice Padronizado de Precipitação (SPI). Para melhorar a estimação do SPI, os procedimentos para análise regional por momentos-L foram empregados na delimitação de regiões estatisticamente homogêneas. A transformada contínua de ondaletas foi utilizada para extrair informações da série temporal de SPI no plano tempo-frequência e para investigar possíveis teleconexões desses sinais com aqueles obtidos de amostras dos índices climáticos de larga escala ENSO e PDO. O uso de análise de frequência regional com momentos L resultou em melhorias na estimativa de séries temporais de SPI. Observou-se que, agregando informação regional, foram obtidas estimativas mais confiáveis de precipitação com baixa frequência de ocorrência. A análise de ondaleta dos índices climáticos sugere que os períodos secos mais extremos na área de estudo são observados quando a fase fria do ENSO e do PDO coincide. Embora não constituindo uma relação estrita de causa e efeito, ficou claro que as secas mais extremas são consistentemente observadas nessa situação. No entanto, é necessária uma investigação mais aprofundada para identificar as particularidades dos padrões de precipitação que não estão associados a anomalias climáticas em larga escala.

ABSTRACT This paper focuses on time-space characterization of drought conditions in the São Francisco River catchment, on the basis of wavelet analysis of Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) time series. In order to improve SPI estimation, the procedures for regional analysis with L-moments were employed for defining statistically homogeneous regions. The continuous wavelet transform was then utilized for extracting time-frequency information from the resulting SPI time series in a multiresolution framework and for investigating possible teleconnections of these signals with those obtained from samples of the large-scale climate indexes ENSO and PDO. The use of regional frequency analysis with L-moments resulted in improvements in the estimation of SPI time series. It was observed that by aggregating regional information more reliable estimates of low frequency rainfall amounts were obtained. The wavelet analysis of climate indexes suggests that the more extreme dry periods in the study area are observed when the cold phase of both ENSO and the PDO coincides. While not constituting a strict cause effect relationship, it was clear that the more extreme droughts are consistently observed in this situation. However, further investigation is necessary for identifying particularities in rainfall patterns that are not associated to large-scale climate anomalies.

RESUMO Nos modelos chuva-vazão, a etapa de calibração geralmente exige tempo e grande quantidade de informação das vazões. No entanto, do ponto de vista prático, a informação usualmente disponível é o nível d’água medido, este, por sua vez, utilizado na construção das curvas-chave. Este artigo propõe uma calibração conjunta dos parâmetros de um modelo hidrológico com uma gama de curvas-chave, as quais foram desenvolvidas para o canal principal da bacia em estudo em uma área altamente ocupada e urbanizada. Como alternativa a uma calibração livre, as simulações foram realizadas com base em uma lista de parâmetros previamente testados. Quatro estações linimétricas foram analisadas e utilizadas para subdividir a área da bacia. O modelo concentrado horário de chuva-vazão GR4H foi utilizado com quatro eventos críticos de inundações bruscas com o intuito de criar uma classificação de critérios de eficiência de Nash-Sutcliffe aplicando o melhor conjunto de parâmetros. Os resultados indicam que os erros do modelo hidrológico foram compensados pelos erros hidráulicos e apresentaram uma equifinalidade no processo.

ABSTRACT Calibration process is usually time demanding and as much streamflow information as possible in rainfall-runoff models. Nevertheless, from a practical point of view, the available information is measurement of water level, which is essential to design rating curves. This manuscript proposes a set of joint calibration of hydrological model parameters with a range of rating curves, developed for the main channel of the catchment in a crowded urban area. As an alternative of free calibration, the simulations were carried out based on a list of proficient parameters. Four streamflow gauging stations were analysed and used to subdivide the basin. The hourly lumped rainfall-runoff model GR4H was applied to four critical flash flood events to create a rank of Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency criteria (NSE) applying the best set of parameters. The results indicated that the hydrological model errors were compensated by hydraulics errors and they presented an equifinality in the process.

RESUMO Por assumir que os impactos nos regimes naturais de vazão de Pequenas Centrais Hidrelétricas (PCHs) são desprezíveis, os licenciamentos ambientais para esses empreendimentos são relativamente fáceis de serem obtidos. Contudo, estudos recentes têm mostrado que a operação de PCHs pode afetar as condições naturais de escoamento especialmente quando os aproveitamentos hidrelétricos são alocados em cascata. Nesse contexto, o principal objetivo deste trabalho é investigar a alteração do comportamento das periodicidades de vazões em um sistema com seis aproveitamentos hidrelétricos, sendo cinco PCHs. Foram utilizadas séries de vazões diárias extraídas de estações localizadas na bacia do rio Jauru, na região hidrográfica do Alto Paraguai, Brasil, entre maio de 2016 e agosto de 2017. Por meio da transformada wavelet, foi possível identificar ciclos dominantes ao longo do tempo e comparar a coerência de séries de vazões entre estações adjacentes. Entre os resultados, observou-se que, no sentido de montante para jusante, os ciclos de alta frequência se tornam mais evidentes enquanto aqueles de baixa frequência ficam enfraquecidos. Análises adicionais indicaram que tais alterações não estão diretamente relacionadas a fatores meteorológicos ou ao aumento gradual da área de drenagem da bacia na direção a jusante, o que sugere que a operação das PCHs pode afetar o ciclo natural de vazões.

ABSTRACT Because it is assumed that the impacts in the natural streamflow regime promoted by Small Hydropower Plants (SHP) are negligible, environmental licensing for such facilities is usually easier. Nonetheless, recent studies have shown that the operation of SHPs may disturb the natural flow conditions, mainly when the plants are placed in a cascade arrangement. In this context, the main objective of this study is investigating the alterations in flows periodic behavior in a system of six hydropower plants, being five of them SHPs. Daily discharge time series were extracted from eight streamflow gauging stations located in the Jauru River catchment, Brazil, whose period-of-record spans from May/2016 to Aug/2017. By using the wavelet transform, dominant cycles along the time series were identified and their coherence in nearby stations was compared. Among the results, one may observe that, from upstream to downstream, the high frequency cycles became more important whereas the low frequency ones have weakened. Additional analyses indicate that such alterations are not directly related to meteorological factors or to the gradual increasing in the catchment’s drainage area in the downstream direction, which suggests that the operation of SHPs may affect the streamflow natural cycles.

Abstract Equine influenza is one of the major respiratory infectious diseases in horses. An equine influenza virus outbreak was identified in vaccinated and unvaccinated horses in a veterinary school hospital in São Paulo, SP, Brazil, in September 2015. The twelve equine influenza viruses isolated belonged to Florida Clade 1. The hemagglutinin and neuraminidase amino acid sequences were compared with the recent isolates from North and South America and the World Organisation for Animal Health recommended Florida Clade 1 vaccine strain. The hemagglutinin amino acid sequences had nine substitutions, compared with the vaccine strain. Two of them were in antigenic site A (A138S and G142R), one in antigenic site E (R62K) and another not in antigenic site (K304E). The four substitutions changed the hydrophobicity of hemagglutinin. Three distinct genetic variants were identified during the outbreak. Eleven variants were found in four quasispecies, which suggests the equine influenza virus evolved during the outbreak. The use of an out of date vaccine strain or updated vaccines without the production of protective antibody titers might be the major contributing factors on virus dissemination during this outbreak.

RESUMO A ausência de monitoramento hidrométrico com extensão, periodicidade, resolução temporal e qualidade adequadas é a realidade brasileira em muitas bacias hidrográficas. Assim, a determinação de volumes de cheia comumente ocorre a partir de modelos chuva-vazão de simples aplicação, tal como o método SCS-CN. Embora o modelo SCS seja largamente aceito, diversos autores têm questionado os resultados de sua aplicação em bacias com características distintas daquelas estudadas originalmente. Uma alternativa para cálculo das vazões máximas em bacias com escasso monitoramento fluviométrico é o método GRADEX, que propõe a extrapolação da curva de frequência dos volumes de cheia a partir de séries de precipitação. Apesar de consolidado, é pouco aplicado no Brasil devido às dificuldades encontradas na resolução de suas hipóteses iniciais. Este artigo sugere, portanto, a combinação de ambos os métodos, visando uma metodologia que reduza as incertezas envolvidas na determinação da distribuição de probabilidades de volumes de cheias. O estudo de caso é realizado na bacia hidrográfica do ribeirão Serra Azul, Juatuba - MG, que dispõe de 12 anos de registros contínuos. A referida combinação ocorre na definição dos limites inferior e superior da distribuição de probabilidades da retenção global de água no solo e na bacia, variáveis do método GRADEX, a partir do conceito do CNASSINTÓTICO. Os cenários modelados evidenciam as diversas possibilidades existentes na extrapolação dos volumes de escoamento superficial, dispondo-se de uma faixa de resultados que melhor embasam a definição da condição de saturação da bacia e, consequentemente, o cálculo das vazões máximas, comparativamente aos métodos originais.

ABSTRACT The absence of hydrometric monitoring of adequate extension, periodicity, temporal resolution and quality is the Brazilian reality in many drainage basins. It’s common the use of rainfall-runoff models of simple application to determine rainfall excess volumes, such as the SCS-CN method. Although the SCS method is broadly accepted, many authors have questioned the results derived from its application to catchments with distinct characteristics than those studied during its original formulation. An alternate method for maximum flow estimation in catchments with scarce monitoring is the GRADEX method, which proposes extrapolation of the flood volumes’ frequency curve from precipitation series. Despite being a consolidated method, it is rarely used in Brazil because of the difficulties found in fulfilling its initial hypotheses. This paper suggests, therefore, the combination of both methods, aiming for a methodology that better describes the uncertainties involved in the determination of the direct flood volumes’ probability distribution. The case study is conducted on the Serra Azul river catchment, Juatuba – MG, which offers 12 years of continuous records. The referred combination occurs on the definition of the lower and upper boundaries of the probability distribution of global water retention in the soil and in the catchment, as embedded in the GRADEX method, from the CNASYMPTOTIC concept. The modelled scenarios bear evidence of the many possibilities that may exist in the extrapolation of the frequency curve of surface runoff volumes suggests a range of results that better underpins the definition of the saturation condition and, consequently, the maximum rainfall excess calculation, as compared to the originally proposed methods.

RESUMO: A reação de fase aguda da inflamação ocorre como resposta a doenças, traumas cirúrgicos e pode acontecer após exercício físico extenuante, como provas de longa distância. O presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o Amiloide A Sérico (SAA), interleucinas pró-inflamatórias e a enzima creatinafosfoquinase (CK) após provas de velocidade livre como marcadores de esforço físico em cavalos de enduro. Utilizou-se sangue de 21 cavalos devidamente treinados, que competiram em provas de 80, 120 e 160km, colhido antes e depois da prova. Houve aumento significativo em CK e SAA após a prova em todos os cavalos, assim como da interleucina anti-inflamatória IL-10. Porém, quando os resultados foram comparados entre os grupos, somente a SAA apresentou diferença, sendo maior nos cavalos de 160km. Não foi observada alteração nas interleucinas pró-inflamatórias IL-1β e TNFα antes e depois da prova, todavia, o TNFα foi maior nos cavalos de 160km após a prova. Baseado nos dados obtidos neste estudo, conclui-se que o esforço é dependente da distância percorrida e não da velocidade imposta e que a SAA é um bom marcador de esforço físico, desde que acompanhada de outros marcadores já consagrados, como a CK. As interleucinas não se apresentaram bons marcadores, já que não sofreram alterações significativas.

ABSTRACT: The acute phase reaction occurs in response to diseases, surgical trauma and can happen after strenuous exercise, like long distance events. This study aimed to evaluate the Serum Amyloid A (SAA), pro-inflammatory interleukins (IL-1β and TNFα) and creatine phosphokinase (CK) after free speed races like physical stress markers in endurance horses. Blood of 21 trained horses that competed in tests of 80, 120 and 160km, was taken before and after race. There was a significant increase in CK and SAA after the race in all horses, as well as the anti-inflammatory interleukin IL-10. But when results were compared between the groups, only the SAA was different, being higher in 160km horses. There was no change in pro-inflammatory interleukins IL-1β and TNFα before and after the event; however, the TNFα was higher in 160km horses after the race. Based on data obtained in this study it was concluded that stress is more dependent on the distance than speed imposed and that SAA is a good marker of physical effort, since it is accompanied by other markers well established as CK. Interleukins are not a good markers since they did not change significantly.

Resumo: Com o objetivo de determinar os valores de referência ecocardiográficos de equinos da raça Mangalarga Marchador, foram avaliados 80 equinos desta raça, machos e fêmeas, com 1,6 a 16 anos de idade, pesando entre 320 a 500 kg, divididos igualmente em 4 grupos: fêmeas de 1,6 a 4 anos de idade (G1), fêmeas com mais de 4 anos de idade (G2), machos de 1,6 a 4 anos de idade (G3), machos com mais de 4 anos de idade (G4). A avaliação constou de exame ecocardiográfico mono e bidimensional, tendo sido realizados através da janela cardíaca direita, nos modos B e M: DIVDs, DIVDd, SIVs, SIVd, DIVEs, DIVEd, PLVEs, PLVEd, Aod, FS%, EF%, AEs, Aod, Aes/ Aod, ponto E-S. Através da janela cardíaca esquerda nos modos B e M: DIVEs, DIVEd, FS%, EF%, AEs. Foram observadas diferenças estatísticas entre as médias dos quatro grupos dos seguintes parâmetros: Aod, AEs, DIVDs, DIVDd, SIVs, SIVd, DIVEs, DIVEd, PLVEs, PLVEd, Vs, Vd e correlações estatísticas positivas entre Aod, AEs, SIVs, SIVd, PLVEs, PLVEd, Vd e a idade, entreAod, AEs, SIVs, SIVd, DIVEd, PLVEs, AEs/Aod e o peso e o perímetro torácico e entre Aod, AEs, SIVs, SIVd, DIVEs, PLVEs, Vd e a altura da cernelha. Houve influência tanto do sexo como da faixa etária sobre os valores de referência para equinos da raça Mangalarga Marchador, tendo os machos acima de 4 anos apresentados valores de medidas ventriculares maiores. O peso, altura e idade dos animais influenciaram da mesma forma os resultados, estando todos relacionados positivamente ao tamanho da estrutura cardíaca.

Abstract: Aiming to establish the echocardiographic reference values of cardiac dimensions and indexes in horses of the Mangalarga Marchador breed, 80 horses, weighing 320 to 500 kg, that were divided in four group by gender and age, as follows: 1.6 to 4-year-old females (G1), more than 4-year-old females (G2), 1.6 to 4-year-old males (G3) and above 4-year-old males (G4), were evaluated by standardized technique. The evaluation consisted of B-mode and guided M-mode echocardiography, by which the following measurements were made: from the right cardiac window, by B- and M-mode: systolic and diastolic RVID, IVS, LVID, LVFW, Aod, FS% and EF%, by B-mode: Las, Aod, and Las/Aod, by M-mode: S-E point, from left cardiac window, by B- and M-mode: LVIDs, LVIDd, FS% and EF% and by B-mode: Las. There were statistic differences between means of the four groups for the following parameters: Aod, Las, RVIDs, RVIDd, IVSs, IVSd, LVIDs, LVIDd, LVFWs, LVFWd, Vs, Vd. There were statistic correlations between Aod, Las, IVSs, IVSd, LVFWs, LVFWd, Vd and age; Aod, Las, IVs, IVSd, LVIDd, LVFWs, Las/Aod and bodyweight and thoracic perimeter; and Aod, LAs, IVSs, IVSd, LVIDs, LVFWs, Vd and height. Sex and age group influenced the reference values for the Mangalarga Marchador horses; males above 4 years presented higher ventricular measurement values. Height, weight and age of the horses influenced in the same way the results, all being positively related to the size of the cardiac structure.

RESUMO: As causas mais frequentes de úlceras gástricas em cavalos são jejum, tipo de alimentação e manejo, bem como a administração de alguns medicamentos. Mais recentemente, o exercício também foi identificado como um fator importante no desenvolvimento das lesões gástricas em cavalos atletas. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar se o exercício em esteira rolante predispõe os cavalos à ocorrência de úlceras gástricas. Cinco cavalos árabes foram submetidos a um período de doze semanas de treinamento em esteira rolante e a avaliação gastroscópica antes e após o período de treinamento. Todos os animais apresentaram lesões gástricas após o treinamento. Com base nesses resultados, conclui-se que cavalos árabes submetidos a exercício em esteira rolante podem desenvolver lesões gástricas em número e gravidade variados.

ABSTRACT: The most frequently causes of gastric ulcers in horses are fasting, feeding type and management, as well as administration of certain medications. More recently, exercise has also been identified as an important factor in the development of gastric lesions in athlete horses. The purpose of the present study was to assess whether treadmill exercise predisposes the horses to the occurrence of gastric ulcers. Five Arabian horses underwent a twelve-week training period on a treadmill and a gastroscopic evaluation before and after the training period. All animals showed gastric lesions after the training period. Based on these results, it is concluded that Arabian horses undergoing exercise on a treadmill may develop gastric lesions varying in number and severity.

Resumo: O presente trabalho teve por objetivo o estudo da influência da altitude sobre os parâmetros eletrocardiográficos obtidos por meio do uso do Holter em 40 cavalos das raças Árabe e Cruza Árabe, em diferentes níveis de condicionamento físico, realizando treinamento em trilhas de 15 km de extensão com velocidade média de 15km/h e variando entre o nível do mar até 1700m de altitude. O monitoramento eletrocardiográfico foi obtido por eletrocardiografia padrão em repouso antes do exercício e por eletrocardiografia dinâmica, com o uso do Holter, durante o exercício e na recuperação pós-exercício. Os animais apresentaram ritmo sinusal com período médio gravado para taquicardia sinusal (32%) e bradicardia sinusal (14%). Entre as arritmias observadas estão o bloqueio atrioventricular de primeiro grau (20%) e o bloqueio atrioventricular de segundo grau (5%). As arritmias ectópicas supraventriculares foram observadas em dois animais e somente um animal apresentou arritmia ventricular. O número de assistolias foi maior em animais menos condicionados. As frequências cardíacas médias e máximas sofreram efeito da altitude com valores maiores em altitude elevada.

Abstract: The aim of this paper was to study the influence of altitude on electrocardiographic parameters by means of the Holter system in 40 Arabian and Arabian crossbred horses, at different levels of physical conditioning, during training in trails of 15 km extension with mean speed of 15 km/h, and altitude varying from sea level to 1700m high. The electrocardiographic monitoring was obtained by standard electrocardiography at rest before exercise, and by dynamic electrocardiography with the Holter system applied during exercise and in post-exercise recovery. The animals presented sinusal rhythm, with a mean registered period for sinusal tachycardia of 32%, and 14% for sinusal bradycardia. Among the arrhythmias there was first-degree atrioventricular block (20%) and second-degree atrioventricular block (5%). Supraventricular ectopic arrhythmias were observed in two horses and only one showed ventricular arrhythmia. The number of asystoles was greater in less conditioned horses. Mean and maximal heart rates were influenced by altitude, with higher values in higher altitudes.

Partial nucleotide sequences of ORF72 (glycoprotein D, gD), ORF64 (infected cell protein 4, ICP4) and ORF30 (DNA polymerase) genes were compared with corresponding sequences of EHV-1 reference strains to characterize the molecular variability of Brazilian strains. Virus isolation assays were applied to 74 samples including visceral tissue, total blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and nasal swabs of specimens from a total of 64 animals. Only one CSF sample (Iso07/05 strain) was positive by virus isolation in cell culture. EHV-1 Iso07/05 neurologic strain and two abortion visceral tissues samples (Iso11/06 and Iso33/06) were PCR-positive for ORF33 (glycoprotein B, gB) gene of EHV-1. A sequence analysis of the ORF72, ORF64 and ORF30 genes from three EHV-1 archival strains (A3/97, A4/72, A9/92) and three clinical samples (Iso07/05, Iso11/06 and Iso33/06) suggested that among Brazilian EHV-1 strains, the amplified region of the gD gene sequence is highly conserved. Additionally, the analysis of ICP4 gene showed high nucleotide and amino acid identities when compared with genotype P strains, suggesting that the EHV-1 Brazilian strains belonged to the same group. All the EHV-1 Brazilian strains were classified as non-neuropathogenic variants (N752) based on the ORF30 analysis. These findings indicate a high conservation of the gD-, ICP4- and ORF30-encoding sequences. Different pathotypes of the EHV-1 strain might share identical genes with no specific markers, and tissue tropism is not completely dependent on the gD envelope, immediate-early ICP4 and DNA polymerase proteins.

A capacidade aeróbica dos equinos atletas pode ser explicada, em partes, pelo seu desenvolvimento cardíaco associado ao treinamento físico. O exame ecocardiográfico de equinos atletas permite a visualização destas alterações e da função cardíaca destes animais. Buscou-se avaliar ecocardiograficamente equinos de diferentes modalidades esportivas, para verificar se o tipo de atividade física desempenhada por cada grupo de animais promove diferenças estruturais ou funcionais cardíacas. 196 equinos foram submetidos à avaliação ecocardiográfica em repouso, sendo divididos em três grupos: grupo Polo, 44 equinos participantes de provas de Polo; grupo QM, 49 equinos da raça Quarto de Milha, participantes de provas de baliza e tambor, e grupo PSI, 103 equinos da raça Puro Sangue Inglês participantes de provas de corridas. Foram avaliados os seguintes índices cardíacos: SIV, DIVE e PLVE em sístole e diástole, AE em sístole, Ao em diástole, relação AE:Ao, FEj, VEj, VSFVE, VDFVE, FS%, E-S, TEVE, DC e FC. Os animais do grupo PSI apresentaram os maiores volumes de ventrículo esquerdo, tendo apresentado proporcionalmente menor eficiência quando analisado o VEj. Os animais do grupo Polo e QM apresentaram melhores valores quando analisadas as variáveis de função cardíaca. A atividade física mais intensa desempenhada pelos animais do grupo QM e Polo permitiu melhor desenvolvimento funcional do coração destes animais, tendo o grupo PSI, apresentado valores que sugerem que sua capacidade aeróbica ainda pode ser melhor explorada através de melhor orientação de seu treinamento físico.

The aerobic capacity of equine athletes may be explained, in part, by its cardiac development associated with physical training. Echocardiographic examination of equine athletes allows the visualization of these changes and cardiac function of these animals. We aimed to evaluate echocardiographically horses of different sports to see if the type of physical activity performed by each group of animals promotes structural or functional cardiac differences. 196 horses underwent echocardiography at rest were divided into three groups: Polo group, 44 horses participating in tests of Polo; QM group, 49 horses of Quarter Horse, participants of barrel and pole bending events and PSI group, 103 horses of the breed Thoroughbred racehorses. We evaluated the following heart rates: IVS, LVD and LVFW in systole and diastole, LA in systole, Ao in diastole, mean LA: Ao, EF, EV, LVFSV, LVFDV, FS%, E-S, LVET, CO and HR. The PSI group animals showed higher left ventricular volumes and provided proportionately less efficiency when we analyzed EV. Animals in group Polo and QM showed higher values when variables such as cardiac function. The more intense physical activity performed by the animals of group QM and Polo provided better functional development of the heart of these animals, and the PSI group, presented figures suggesting that aerobic capacity can still be better exploited through better targeting of their physical training.

O jogo de pólo se caracteriza por mudanças abruptas e frequentes na intensidade do exercício dos cavalos. Para satisfazer esta demanda inconstante de energia, os animais utilizam as vias aeróbia e anaeróbia em proporções e intensidade variáveis. Neste contexto deve haver equilíbrio entre a formação das espécies reativas de oxigênio (EROs) e a ação das substâncias antioxidantes a fim de evitar o estresse oxidativo e suas consequências. Avaliou-se o efeito da suplementação com vitaminas ADE no metabolismo oxidativo destes animais. Para tanto, 18 equinos mestiços foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em dois grupos: tratado e controle (GT) e controle (GC).Os animais do GT receberam complexo vitamínico ADE (1 mL/50 kg de peso vivo) pela via intramuscular profunda aos 30 e 15 dias antes do jogo. Os cavalos do GC receberam, pela mesma via de administração e nos mesmos momentos, 10mL de solução fisiológica. Os animais jogaram um tempo de 7,5min. Foram coletadas amostras de sangue nos mesmos dias de tratamento e imediatamente antes e aos 15, 90 e 180 minutos após o jogo. Foram determinadas as concentrações sanguíneas de CK, LDH, lactato, glicose, AST, GSH, SOD e MDA. Após o jogo o GT apresentou maiores valores para AST, lactato e glicemia que o GC, sugerindo melhor aproveitamento energético dos animais tratados. Os valores maiores de GSH e menores de lactato no GT antes da prova sugerem maior aporte antioxidante nos animais tratados. A manutenção dos teores de MDA indica que nenhum dos grupos entrou em estresse oxidativo.

Horses used for the game of polo experience abrupt and frequent changes in exercise intensity. To meet this variable energy demand, the horses use both aerobic and anaerobic pathways in varying proportions and intensities. In this context, there must be a balance between the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the action of antioxidants to prevent oxidative stress and its consequences. The effect of supplementation with an ADE vitamin complex on oxidative metabolism was evaluated in 18 crossbred horses randomly divided between a treated group (TG) and a control group (CG). The TG animals received the ADE vitamin complex (1mL/50 kg of body weight) by deep intramuscular injection at 30 and 15 days before the game. The CG horses received 10ml of saline by the same administration route and schedule. During the polo match, the animals played for a total of 7.5 min. Blood samples were collected on the same days as the treatments were administered, and immediately before and at 15, 90 and 180 minutes after the game. The concentrations of creatine phosphokinase (CK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), lactate, glucose, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were measured in the blood samples. After the game, the TG demonstrated higher levels of AST, lactate and glucose than the CG, suggesting more efficient energy use by the treated animals. The higher GSH and lower lactate levels in the TG before the game suggest the presence of a greater antioxidant supply in the treated animals. The maintenance of the MDA levels indicates that neither of the groups exhibited oxidative stress.
