Fractionation of the EtOH extract from aerial parts of Baccharis uncinella C. DC. (Asteraceae) led to isolation of caffeic and ferulic acids, which were identified from spectroscopic and spectrometric evidence. These compounds exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and have been shown to be effective in the prevention/treatment of metabolic syndrome. This study investigated whether the combined treatment of caffeic and ferulic acids exhibits a more significant beneficial effect in a mouse model with metabolic syndrome. The combination treatment with caffeic and ferulic acids was tested for 60 days in C57 mice kept on a high-fat (40%) diet. The data obtained indicated that treatment with caffeic and ferulic acids prevented gain in body weight induced by the high-fat diet and improved hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia. The expression of a number of metabolically relevant genes was affected in the liver of these animals, showing that caffeic and ferulic acid treatment results in increased cholesterol uptake and reduced hepatic triglyceride synthesis in the liver, which is a likely explanation for the prevention of hepatic steatosis. In conclusion, the combined treatment of caffeic and ferulic acids displayed major positive effects towards prevention of multiple aspects of the metabolic syndrome and liver steatosis in an obese mouse model.

Predação de Sementes de Copaifera langsdorffi Desf. (Fabaceae: Caesalpinioideae) por Rhinochenus brevicollis Chevrolat (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) em uma Área de Cerrado do Brasil: Insetos predadores de sementes geralmente são herbívoros especializados que podem ser afetados por características da planta hospedeira. Neste estudo, a predação das sementes de Copaifera langsdorffi por Rhynochenus brevicollis foi caracterizada testando-se as hipóteses da concentração do recurso e da arquitetura da planta. O estudo foi realizado em um fragmento de cerrado localizado no norte do estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. A percentagem de sementes de C. langsdorffi predadas por R. brevicollis variou de 1 to 30% (média±DP, 9.31±6.41). O número de frutos por ramos afetou negativamente a percentagem de predação das sementes por R. brevicollis.A predação de sementes pelo besouro mostrou relação positiva com a circunferência do tronco das árvores, mas a altura das árvores não afetou o ataque do predador. Assim, nossos dados não apresentaram suporte real para as duas hipóteses testadas. Finalmente, o estudo discute o papel da frutifcação supra-anual na regulação da população de R. brevicollis.

Seed predator insects are generally highly specialized herbivores that can be affected by several plant characteristics. In this study, the resource concentration hypothesis and the plant architecture hypothesis were tested by evaluating the attack of Rhynochenus brevicollis on Copaifera langsdorffi seeds. The study was conducted in a cerrado fragment situated in southeastern Brazil. The percentage of C. langsdorffi seed predation by R. brevicollis ranged from 1 to 30% (mean±SD, 9.31±6.41). The percentage of seed predation was negatively related to the number of fruits per branch. The predation of seeds by the beetle was positively affected by plant crown circumference, while plant height did not show any relationship with seed predation. Thus, our results did not support any of the two hypotheses evaluated. Finally, the study discusses the role of plant phenology (masting) in regulating the seed predator's population in cerrado vegetation.

Este estudo avaliou o impacto da presença da gramínea exótica (Brachiaria decumbens) na herbivoria e no desenvolvimento de plântulas de espécies nativas (Hymenaea stigonocarpa e Dipteryx alata) de Cerrado. Para avaliar o impacto da presença da gramínea, 10 blocos em pastagem (antiga área de Cerrado) na Embrapa Gado de Corte (Campo Grande-MS) foram demarcados em janeiro de 2009. As gramíneas foram mantidas intactas em metade dos blocos e, na outra metade, foram removidas. Em cada tratamento, foram avaliados a herbivoria, a altura e o diâmetro na altura do solo (DAS) de 25 plântulas de cada espécie ao longo do ano. O conteúdo de carbono, nitrogênio e água das folhas também foi quantificado. Plântulas de Hymenaea stigonocarpa nos tratamentos com gramínea tiveram maior taxa de crescimento em diâmetro que as plântulas no tratamento sem gramíneas. As plântulas de Dipteryx alata que estavam no tratamento sem gramíneas tiveram maiores taxas de crescimento em altura que as do tratamento com gramíneas. Houve diferença na taxa de herbivoria de D.alata entre os tratamentos. As plântulas das duas espécies que estavam no tratamento com gramínea mostraram maiores concentrações de carbono e menores de água. O conteúdo de nitrogênio foliar foi maior no tratamento com gramíneas que no sem gramíneas em D.alata; já o nitrogênio em H. stigonocarpa não variou entre os tratamentos. Esses resultados mostram que cada espécie nativa possui distintas respostas fisiológicas e suscetibilidade à herbivoria em ambientes sob competição de recursos com a gramínea exótica, B. decumbens.

This study evaluated the impact of the presence of the exotic grass (Brachiaria decumbens) on the herbivory and development of seedlings of native species (Hymenaea stigonocarpa and Dipteryx alata) of the Cerrado. Thus, 10 pasture plots (former Cerrado) at the Embrapa Gado de Corte (Campo Grande-MS) were demarcated in January 2009. The grasses were kept intact in half of the plots and were removed in the other half. In each treatment, the herbivory, as well as height and diameter at ground level (DGL) of 25seedlings of each species were evaluated during one year. Carbon, nitrogen and water content of the leaves in each treatment were also quantified. Seedlings of Hymenaea stigonocarpa in plots without grasses had higher diameter growth rates than seedlings in plots with grasses. Dipteryx alata seedlings grown in plots without grasses had a higher height growth rate than seedlings grown in plots with grasses. There was a difference in the herbivory rate of D. alata between treatments. Seedlings of plots with grasses for the two species showed a higher concentration of carbon and lower amount of water. The leaf nitrogen content was higher in plots with grasses than without grasses in D. alata, while nitrogen in H. stigonocarpa did not vary between treatments. These results showed that each native species had distinct physiological responses and susceptibility to herbivory in environments under resource competition with the exotic grass B. decumbens.

A avaliação da qualidade fisiológica de sementes é um aspecto importante para o controle das plantas daninhas. Objetivou-se verificar a viabilidade de sementes de Euphorbia heterophylla resistentes e suscetíveis a herbicidas, após serem armazenadas durante 14 meses, por meio da aplicação dos testes de germinação e tetrazólio. Foi analisada a germinação na ausência e presença de luz, em temperatura constante (25 ºC). Para o teste de tetrazólio, as sementes foram seccionadas longitudinal-diagonalmente, colocadas em placas de Petri contendo solução de tetrazólio a 1%, envoltas em papel-alumínio e mantidas a 30 ºC, no escuro e em estufa, por 18 horas. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas entre os biótipos resistentes e suscetíveis de E. heterophylla em ambos os testes. As sementes mantiveram-se viáveis durante o período de armazenamento. As médias de viabilidade das sementes no teste de tetrazólio foram superiores àquelas obtidas nos testes de germinação, sugerindo que, apesar da viabilidade, as sementes de E. heterophylla apresentam dormência quando armazenadas por 14 meses.

The evaluation of the physiological quality of seeds is an important aspect in weed control. The viability of Euphorbia heterophylla seeds resistant and susceptible to herbicides stored for 14 months was verified using germination and tetrazolium tests. Germination was analyzed in the absence and presence of light at constant temperature (25 ºC). For the tetrazolium test, seeds were longitudinally and diagonally sectioned, placed in Petri plates containing tetrazolium solution at 1%, wrapped in aluminum foil and maintained at 30 ºC in a dark chamber for 18 hours. Resistant and susceptible biotypes of E. heterophylla did not differ statistically in both tests. Seeds were maintained viable during the storage period. The average viability of the seeds submitted to the tetrazolium test was higher than that of the germination tests, suggesting that, despite viability, E. heterophylla seeds present dormancy when stored for 14 months.

O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar os efeitos do chlorimuron-ethyl, inibidor da enzima acetolactato sintase (ALS), no crescimento foliar (largura e comprimento) e em altura de plantas de Euphorbia heterophylla suscetíveis e resistentes aos herbicidas inibidores da ALS, aos 30 dias após a aplicação do herbicida. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, utilizando-se o delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com 11 repetições por dose aplicada do herbicida. Foram observadas respostas diferenciais entre os biótipos. As características analisadas variaram segundo a dose utilizada do herbicida. Nenhuma das doses experimentais, incluindo a comercial, foi capaz de controlar, eficientemente, o desenvolvimento das plantas resistentes.

The objective of this study was to verify the effects of chlorimuron-ethyl (classic), an inhibitor of acetolactate synthase (ALS) on leaf growth (width and length) and plant height of Euphorbia heterophylla, susceptible or resistant to ALS inhibitors, 30 days after herbicide application. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using a completely randomized design with 11 repetitions per herbicide dosage applied. Differential responses were observed between the two biotypes. The characteristics analyzed varied according to herbicide dose. None of the experimental dosages, including the commercially recommended one, allowed an efficient control of the development of resistant plants.

Foram investigados os determinantes locais e regionais da riqueza de insetos indutores de galhas sobre o arbusto dióico Baccharis concinna Barroso (Asteraceae) na porção sudeste da Cadeia do Espinhaço, MG. O número total de espécies de insetos indutores de galhas e a riqueza de Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) foram influenciados pelo sexo da planta. Plantas masculinas apresentaram maior riqueza de insetos indutores de galhas do que plantas femininas, corroborando a hipótese da herbivoria mediada pelo sexo na comunidade. O número total de espécies de insetos galhadores e a riqueza de Cecidomyiídeos mostraram um pico em altitudes intermediárias. A riqueza de todas as espécies de insetos galhadores e de cecidomiideos foi fortemente influenciada pelo habitat. Plantas no habitat xérico apresentaram mais espécies de insetos galhadores do que plantas no habitat mésico, corroborando a hipótese do estresse higrotérmico/nutricional. Os resultados indicam que os fatores locais podem ser importantes estruturadores da comundade de insetos galhadores em B. concinna.

We investigate the local and regional determinants of galling insect richness on the dioecious shrub Baccharis concinna Barroso (Asteraceae) in the southeastern portion of the Espinhaço Mountains in Brazil. The total number of galling species and the richness of galling Cecidomyiidae (Diptera) were influenced by plant gender. Male plants supported a higher richness of galling insects than female plants, supporting the hypothesis of sex-biased herbivory at the community level. The total number of galling species and the richness of galling cecidomyiids showed a peak at intermediate altitudes. The richness of all galling species and galling cecidomyiids were strongly influenced by habitat. Plants in xeric habitats supported more galling species than plants in mesic habitats, corroborating the hypothesis of hygrothermal/nutritional stress. Our results indicate that local factors may be the most important factors structuring the galling insect community on B. concinna.
