RESUMO O cerrado brasileiro apresenta grande diversidade de plantas e solo ácido com reduzida disponibilidade de certos nutrientes, como fósforo (P). Adição de resíduos orgânicos e microrganismos poderia ajudar no estabelecimento de plantas nesse ambiente. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar o desenvolvimento inicial de mudas de baru (Dipteryx alata), por meio da disponibilidade de nutrientes (como P) pela adubação com lodo de esgoto compostado (LODO) com bagaço de cana-de-açúcar (1:1) e inoculado com Bacillus subtilis e fungo micorrízico arbuscular (FMA) Glomus clarum. Os experimentos foram conduzidos em casa de vegetação, com delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial 2 × 4, sendo: LODO (com e sem) e inoculação (1 = controle; 2 = B. subtilis; 3 = G. clarum; 4 = B. subtilis + G. clarum), com cinco repetições e uma muda por vaso. Transcorridos 150 dias do transplantio das mudas, avaliaram-se massa fresca e massa seca da parte aérea; diâmetro do colmo; altura de plantas; número de folhas; índice de qualidade de mudas; massa fresca e seca, área de superfície, volume, comprimento total e diâmetro médio das raízes; colonização radicular (COL) e número de esporos de FMA; COL por endofíticos septados melanizados (DSE) e carbono do CO2 (C-CO2) liberado. O baruzeiro mostrou-se uma espécie pouco exigente em adubação, mas responsiva à inoculação, mostrando incrementos para massa fresca, área de superfície, volume e comprimento total de raízes. A inoculação com G. clarum elevou o número de esporos e a taxa de C-CO2 liberado no solo, enquanto G. clarum e B. subtilis aumentaram a COL por FMA e DSE.

ABSTRACT The Brazilian Cerrado has a great diversity of plants and acidic soils with reduced availability of some nutrients, such as phosphorus (P). Addition of organic residues and microorganisms could help to establish plants in this environment. The aim of this work was to evaluate the initial development of baru (Dipteryx alata) seedlings, through the availability of nutrients (such as P) by fertilization with composted sewage sludge (SLUDGE) with sugarcane bagasse (1:1) and inoculated with Bacillus subtilis and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) Glomus clarum. The experiments were carried out in a greenhouse, with an experimental design in randomized blocks, in a 2 × 4 factorial scheme, being: SLUDGE (with and without) and inoculation (1 = Control; 2 = B. subtilis, 3 = Gl. clarum and 4 = B. subtilis + Gl. clarum), with 5 replications and one seedling per pot. After 150 days of transplanting the seedlings, the following parameters were evaluated: fresh and dry biomass of the aerial part; stem diameter; plant height; number of leaves; seedling quality index; fresh and dry biomass, surface area, volume, total length and mean diameter of roots; root colonization (COL) and number of AMF spores; COL by melanized septate endophytes (DSE) and carbon from CO2 (C-CO2) released. The baruzeiro showed to be an undemanding species in terms of fertilization, but responsive to inoculation, showing increments in fresh biomass, surface area, volume and total length of roots. The inoculation with Gl. clarum increased the number of spores and the rate of C-CO2 released into the soil, while Gl. clarum and B. subtilis increased COL by AMF and DSE.

Resumo O corretivo de acidez mais comumente utilizado nos solos tropicais é o calcário, porém a escória de aciaria pode ser alternativa para áreas de produção de grama, devido à presença do silício que pode aumentar a tolerância da grama a estresses bióticos e/ou abióticos. Este estudo foi desenvolvido para avaliar o efeito da aplicação de escória de aciaria, comparado ao calcário, na implantação de um sistema de produção de grama bermuda. O experimento foi instalado em Botucatu-SP e o delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos ao acaso em fatorial 2 x 5 com 4 repetições. Os tratamentos foram compostos por dois corretivos (escória de aciaria e calcário) e doses dos corretivos calculados para elevar as saturações por bases do solo para 12% (atual), 30%, 50%, 70% e 90%. A aplicação de doses de calcário e de escória de aciaria proporcionaram efeitos positivos nos atributos químicos do solo relacionados com a correção da acidez, como o pH, teores de Ca e Mg, H+Al, Al, CTC, SB, e V%. A escória proporcionou maiores teores de P, Ca e Si, enquanto o calcário maior teor de Mg no solo. A escória de aciaria proporcionou uma maior taxa de cobertura do solo pela grama bermuda quando comparado ao calcário, aos 114 e 161 DAT (dias após o transplantio), sendo a máxima taxa de cobertura obtida com a saturação por bases de 60% aos 161 DAT. As gramas que receberam a escória apresentaram maior quantidade de raízes, rizomas e estolões, quando comparados ao calcário. Sugere-se o uso da escoria de siderurgia, e, no cálculo da necessidade de corretivo, a saturação por bases do solo de 90%.

Abstract Limestone is the most commonly used acidity-correction agent in tropical soils. However, steel slag can be an alternative for turfgrass production areas because it contains silicon, which can increase turfgrass tolerance to biotic and/or abiotic stresses. This study was developed to evaluate the effect of the application of steel slag, as compared with limestone, on a bermudagrass sod production system. The experiment was carried out in Botucatu-SP, Brazil, in a randomized block design arranged in a factorial scheme 2 × 5 with 4 replications. Treatments consisted of two correctives (steel slag and limestone) and their rates, which were calculated to raise the soil base saturation to 12% (current), 30%, 50%, 70% and 90%. The application of lime and steel slag rates had positive effects on soil chemical attributes related to acidity correction, such as pH, Ca, Mg, H + Al, Al, CEC, SB, and base saturation (%). The slag provided higher levels of P, Ca, and Si, whereas limestone increased the Mg soil content. Steel slag provided a higher ground cover rate for bermudagrass than limestone at 114 and 161 days after transplanting (DAT), with maximum cover rate achieved with 60% base saturation at 161 DAT. The turfgrasses treated with slag showed a higher amount of roots, rhizomes, and stolons when compared with those treated with limestone. It is suggested the use of steel slag and, in calculating the need for corrective, 90% soil base saturation.

RESUMO Vários autores relatam que o potássio (K) é o nutriente absorvido em maiores quantidades pelas plantas de gérbera. Assim, objetivou determinar a concentração de K na solução de substratos no cultivo de gérbera de vaso, quantificado pelo Cardy Horiba C-131 e espectrofotometria de absorção atômica e correlacioná-los entre si e com o teor foliar na planta. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso em esquema fatorial 5×2 (5 substratos/2 cultivares) e quatro repetições. As mudas de gérbera cultivares Cherry e Red, com quatro folhas definitivas foram transplantadas em vasos preenchidos com os substratos e aclimatadas durante 30 dias. Após a aclimatação, avaliou-se quinzenalmente o teor de K na solução do substrato extraída pela metodologia do “PourThru”, e o teor foliar de potássio das plantas de gérbera, utilizando-se o medidor de íons portátil Cardy Horiba C-131 e o espectrofotômetro de absorção atômica. A solução do substrato comercial apresentou maiores concentrações de K em relação aos demais nas duas formas de medição, o que está relacionado diretamente com os elevados teores iniciais do nutriente nesse substrato. Valores maiores de K foram obtidos para a cultivar Red, tanto na solução quanto nas folhas. A concentração de K da solução do substrato cultivado com plantas de gérbera envasada quantificada pelo Cardy Horiba C-131 e pela espectrofotometria de absorção atômica correlacionaram-se significativamente entre si, e apresentaram baixa correlação com o teor desse nutriente nas folhas.

Abstract Several authors report that potassium (K) is the nutrient absorbed in greater amounts by gerbera plants. Thus, objective of determining the concentration of Kin the solution of substrates for growing potted gerbera, quantified by the Cardy Horiba C-131 and an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, correlating them with each other and with the plant leaf content. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse. The experimental design was in randomized complete blocks using a 5×2 factorial scheme (5 substrates/2 cultivars) and four replications. Cherry and Red gerbera cultivar seedlings with four final leaves were transplanted into pots, filled with the substrates and acclimated for 30 days. After acclimation, the K content in the substrate solution extracted by the “PourThru” methodology was evaluated every two weeks using the Cardy Horiba C-131 portable ion meter and an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, as well as the K content in the leaves of gerbera plants. The solution of the commercial substrate had higher concentrations of K in relation to the others in the two forms of measurement, which is directly related to the high initial contents of the nutrient in this substrate. This is directly related to the high initial K contents in the substrate. Greater values of K were obtained for the cultivar Red, both in the solution and in the leaves. The K concentration of the substrate solution cultured with gerbera plants quantified by the Cardy Horiba C-131 and atomic absorption spectrophotometry correlated significantly with each other and showed a low correlation with the content of this nutrient in the plant tissue.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o teor nutricional e a produtividade de grãos de três cultivos de milho (Zea mays) em resposta à adubação fosfatada com fertilizante organomineral à base de cama de aves ou mineral, quando cultivado em Nitossolo Vermelho Distroférrico com elevado teor inicial de fósforo. O experimento foi conduzido em campo, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial 2×4+1 (fertilizantes organomineral ou mineral × 20, 40, 60 ou 80 kg ha-1 de P + controle sem adubação fosfatada), com quatro repetições cada um. Foram determinados os teores de P disponível e carbono orgânico total (COT) no solo ao final do ciclo da cultura, os teores de P no tecido vegetal e a produtividade de grãos. O índice de eficiência agronômica (IEA) foi estimado com base na produtividade de grãos. Após três safras, os teores de P disponível e COT no solo não aumentaram significativa com uso dos fertilizantes, mas apresentaram relação direta com as doses de P. Em um Nitossolo Vermelho Distroférrico com elevado teor inicial de P, o uso de fertilizante organomineral à base de cama de aves proporciona maior produtividade de milho, com IEA 20% superior ao do fertilizante mineral.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the nutritional content and grain yield of three corn (Zea mays) crops in response to phosphate fertilization with an organomineral fertilizer based on poultry litter or a mineral fertilizer, when cultivated on a Rhodic Khandiudox with a high initial phosphorus content. The experiment was carried out in the field in a randomized complete block design in a 2×4+1 factorial arrangement (organomineral or mineral fertilizer × 20, 40, 60, or 80 kg ha-1 P + control treatment with no phosphate fertilization), with four replicates each. Available P and total organic carbon (TOC) contents in the soil at the end of the crop cycle, plant tissue P contents, and grain yield were determined. The agronomic efficiency index (AEI) was estimated based on corn grain yield. After three harvests, soil available P and TOC contents did not increase significantly due to fertilizer use, but were directly related to P doses. In a Rhodic Khandiudox with a high initial P content, the use of an organomineral fertilizer based on poultry litter promotes higher corn crop yield, with an AEI 20% higher than that of the mineral fertilizer.

RESUMO Plantas de mamona são suscetíveis à presença de alumínio (Al) no solo. Dessa forma, técnicas de manejo são necessárias para o seu cultivo em solos ácidos e com altos teores de Al, como em regiões tropicais. Objetivou-se avaliar linhagens de mamona, quanto à sua tolerância a Al. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados, em modelo fatorial 2 x 9, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de presença e ausência de Al, bem como de nove linhagens de mamona (CRZ H06, CRZ H11, CRZ H12, CRZ H15, CRZ H17, CRZ H18, CRZ H19, CRZ H22 e FCA). De acordo com a distribuição das linhagens em quartis, foram separados dois grupos. O grupo tolerante a Al foi composto por CRZ H06, H11 e H17; enquanto o grupo suscetível a Al constituiu-se por CRZ H12, H15, H18, H19, H22 e FCA. As linhagens FCA e CRZ H17 apresentaram maior crescimento, quando cultivadas sem Al.

ABSTRACT Castor bean plants are susceptible to aluminum (Al) in the soil, requiring adequate management techniques for their cultivation in acid soils containing high Al levels, as it occurs in tropical regions. This study aimed to assess the Al tolerance of castor bean lines. A randomized block design, in a 2 x 9 factorial scheme, with four replicates, was used. The treatments consisted of presence and absence of Al, as well as nine castor bean lines (CRZ H06, CRZ H11, CRZ H12, CRZ H15, CRZ H17, CRZ H18, CRZ H19, CRZ H22 and FCA). Based on a distribution into quartiles, the lines were divided into two groups. The Al-tolerant group contained the CRZ H06, H11 and H17 lines, while the group susceptible to Al was composed of CRZ H12, H15, H18, H19, H22 and FCA. The FCA and CRZ H17 lines showed the highest growth, when cultivated without Al.

ABSTRACT: Nitrogen fertilization and an appropriate cutting thickness can result in firmer sod that can be handled in less time with greater turfgrass regrowth during the subsequent cycle. This experiment was conducted on a sod production farm located in Capela do Alto, in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The soil was a dystrophic Rhodic Hapludox (Oxisol) with a medium texture. The experiment had two statistical designs; the initial design was randomized blocks with seven treatments and four replicates. Treatments were five doses of liquid organo-mineral fertilizer (OMF) corresponding to 0, 100, 200, 300 and 400 kg ha−1 of nitrogen (N) with supplementation of phosphorous (P) and potassium (K) as well as two control treatments - one with 300 kg ha–1 of N as OMF and the other with 300 kg ha−1 of N-urea + P and K. At harvest, the adopted design was a split-plot type with four replicates in a 7 × 3 factorial arrangement with seven treatments as the main plot and three sod cutting heights (9, 16 and 22 mm) as subplots. Nitrogen doses in the form of OMF influenced the percentage of ground cover (PGC) by turfgrass in both cycles. The N dose of 300 kg ha−1 formed the sod more quickly and provided the largest mass of roots and stolons and the highest sod tensile strength. The thinnest sod samples had faster regrowth and provided higher PGCs.

RESUMO O silício é capaz de proteger as plantas contra vários estresses bióticos e abióticos, entre eles o estresse por alumínio. No entanto, a interação entre silício e alumínio ainda é pouco conhecida, sendo que há diversas hipóteses para justificar o papel do silício na amenização do estresse causado por alumínio. Objetivou-se avaliar o efeito da aplicação de silício nos teores e acúmulos de macro e micronutrientes, alumínio e silício na parte aérea de plantas de arroz de terras altas cultivadas sob estresse por alumínio, bem como as características químicas do solo após a colheita. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados, disposto em modelo fatorial 2 x 5, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de duas cultivares de arroz de terras altas (BRS Talento - não tolerante ao alumínio; Guarani - tolerante ao alumínio) e cinco doses de silício (0 mg dm-3, 30 mg dm-3, 60 mg dm-3, 90 mg dm-3 e 120 mg dm-3). O silício aplicado aumenta o teor de silício na planta e no solo e diminui o teor de alumínio na parte aérea, porém, não incrementa a absorção de macro e micronutrientes e não altera o teor de alumínio e pH do solo.

ASBTRACT Silicon is able to protect plants against various biotic and abiotic stresses, including aluminum stress. However, the interaction between silicon and aluminum is still little known, since there are several hypotheses to justify the silicon role on aluminum stress alleviation. This study aimed at evaluating the effect of silicon application on contents and accumulation of macro and micronutrients, aluminum and silicon on shoots of upland rice grown under aluminum stress, as well as the chemical characteristics of the soil after harvest. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in a 2 x 5 factorial arrangement, with four replications. Treatments consisted of two upland rice cultivars (BRS Talento -aluminum non-tolerant; Guarani -aluminum tolerant) and five silicon doses (0 mg dm-3, 30 mg dm-3, 60 mg dm-3, 90 mg dm-3 and 120 mg dm-3). The silicon applied increases the silicon content in the plant and soil and decreases the aluminumcontent in shoots, however, it does not increase the macro and micronutrients absorption and does not change the soil aluminum content and pH.

Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos de doses de nitrogênio no crescimento inicial, índice SPAD, teor e acúmulo de nutrientes em mudas de cedro. O experimento foi realizado em estufa plástica e as mudas, cultivadas em vasos plásticos preenchidos com 20 dm-3 de Latossolo Vermelho, arranjados em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Testaram-se as doses de 0, 40, 80, 120 e 160 mg dm-3 de N. A adubação até a dose de 160 mg dm-3 de N promoveu incremento do índice SPAD e do crescimento inicial das plantas, além de maior absorção de N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn e Zn. De modo geral, as menores doses de N limitaram o crescimento, mas não a absorção de nutrientes pelas plantas de cedro. Na folha, o único nutriente afetado foi o B, que teve seu teor reduzido com o aumento das doses de N. O aumento da adubação nitrogenada alterou a distribuição do Cu nas plantas, uma vez que promoveu aumento do teor de Cu na raiz e redução de seu teor no caule. Maiores doses de N promoveram maior acúmulo de todos os nutrientes em função do incremento da produção de matéria seca. A adubação nitrogenada modificou a dinâmica de absorção dos nutrientes em cedro, e, com a dose de 160 mg dm-3 de N, a quantidade absorvida obedeceu à seguinte ordem: N> S> Ca> K> Mg> P > Fe> Mn> B> Zn> Cu.

We aimed to evaluate the effects of nitrogen rates in early growth, SPAD index, content and accumulation of nutrients in cedar seedlings. The experiment was carried out in a plastic greenhouse and the seedlings were grown in plastic pots filled with 20 dm-3 of Rhodic Hapludox, arranged inrandomized blocks with four replications. Rates of 0, 40, 80, 120 and 160 mg dm-3 N were tested. Fertilization up to 160 mg dm-3 N promoted increases in SPAD index and early growth of plants, beyond greater absorption of N,P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn. Overall, lower N rates limited growth but not the absorption of nutrients by cedar plants. In leaves, the only nutrien taffected was the B which their content was reduced with increasing of N rate. Increased of nitrogen fertilization changed the Cu distributionin plants, since increased Cu content in roots and reduced their content in stem. Higher N rates promoted higher accumulation of all nutrients due to the increase of dry matter. Nitrogen fertilization changed the dynamic of nutrient absorption in cedar. With 160 mg dm-3 N, the amount absorbed followed the order: N>S>Ca>K>Mg>P>Fe>Mn>B> Zn> Cu.

A reflectância da folha em determinados comprimentos de onda pode ser uma alternativa para estimar a concentração de nitrogênio (N) na planta, devido à relação entre o teor de clorofila e de N no tecido foliar. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar índices da cor verde em grama-bermuda para predizer o nível de N na planta. O experimento foi conduzido em área comercial de produção de grama-bermuda, localizada na cidade de Capela do Alto/SP. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos ao acaso, com cinco tratamentos (0, 150, 300, 450 e 600kg de N ha-1) e quatro repetições. Foi avaliada a reflectância das folhas pelo uso de medidor de cor de grama, clorofilômetro, e por meio de análise da imagem digital. O matiz (H) e índice de cor verde escuro (ICVE), calculados com base nos índices de reflectância da imagem digital, o ICVE, obtido com medidor de cor de grama, e a intensidade de coloração verde (ICV), obtida com o clorofilômetro, apresentaram forte correlação positiva com a concentração de N e a taxa de cobertura do solo (TCS) da grama-bermuda, podendo ser utilizados como índices auxiliares na recomendação de adubação nitrogenada para a cultura. Os valores obtidos que podem servir como primeiros índices para avaliação do estado nutricional em N na grama-bermuda Celebration são: H de 88 a 109o e ICVE de 0,54 a 0,66 (imagem digital); H de 67 a 76o e ICVE de 0,41 a 0,44 (medidor de cor da grama TCM 500); e ICV de 374 a 471 (clorofilômetro CM 1000).

Leaves reflectance in a certain wavelength can be an alternative to estimate the N concentration in the plant because of the relationship between the chlorophyll content and N in the leaf tissue. This research aimed to evaluate the index of green color of Bermuda grass to predict the nutritional status in N. The experiment was installed and conducted in an area of grass commercial production, located in "Capela do Alto / SP". The experimental design was randomized blocks, with five treatments: 0, 150, 300, 450 and 600kg ha-1 and four replications. It was evaluated the leaves reflectance by using the grass color meter, chlorophyll meter and by the digital image analysis. The hue (H) and dark green color index (DGCI), calculated based on rates of reflectance of the digital image, the DGCI, obtained by grass color meter and intensity of green color obtained with chlorophyll meter presented strong positive correlation with N concentration and the soil cover rate of Bermuda grass which can be used as auxiliary index to assist in the recommendation of nitrogen fertilization. The values that can serve as the primary index for assessing the nutritional status of N in Celebration Bermuda grass are: H 88 to 109o and DGCI 0.54 to 0,66 (digital image); H 67 to 76o and DGCI 0.41 to 0.44 (TCM 500 color grass meter) and GCI 374 to 471 (CM 1000 chlorophyll metter).

O controle químico do fungo Didymella bryoniae, agente causal da doença crestamento gomoso em meloeiro, frequentemente é ineficiente, e alternativas como enxertia e nutrição devem ser estudadas. Porta-enxertos e concentrações de potássio foram testadas objetivando controlar a doença esta doença em meloeiro rendilhado, sob ambiente protegido. O híbrido de meloeiro 'Bônus II' pé-franco e enxertado em porta-enxertos melão 'Dinero' e abóbora 'Strong Tosa' foram cultivados e inoculados pelo método de inserção de palito com discos de micélio de 7 mm do isolado de D. bryoniae Dbr 37, e o controle somente com inserção do palito. As plantas foram submetidas às concentrações de potássio 0; 62,5; 125; 187,5; 250 mg L-1. Plantas de meloeiro 'Bônus II' enxertadas foram resistentes ao fungo e as não enxertadas suscetíveis. As concentrações de potássio não influenciaram tanto no tamanho da lesão no caule quanto na sobrevivência das plantas.

Chemical control of the fungus Didymella bryoniae, the causal agent of the disease gummy stem blight in melon, is frequently inefficient; thus, alternatives such as grafting and nutrition must be studied. Rootstocks and potassium levels were tested aimed at controlling this disease in net melon under protected environment. The melon hybrid 'Bônus II', ungrafted and grafted onto 'Dinero' melon and 'Strong Tosa' pumpkin rootstocks, was cultivated and inoculated by using the toothpick insertion method with 7-mm mycelial disks from the isolate D. bryoniae Dbr 37; for control, only toothpick insertion was used. The plants were subjected to the following potassium levels: 0, 62.5, 125, 187.5, 250 mg L-1. Grafted 'Bônus II' melon plants were resistant to the fungus, whereas ungrafted ones were susceptible. The adopted potassium levels did not influence the stem lesion size or the survival of plants.

Solos com altos teores de Al tóxico podem causar diversos danos às plantas e, como consequência, diminuir sua produtividade; assim, seu manejo torna-se imprescindível para obter maiores produtividades, e o Si pode ser alternativa para diminuir a toxidez por Al em plantas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a interação entre Si e Al em plantas de arroz de terras altas cultivadas em solo naturalmente alumínico de textura média arenosa. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos inteiramente casualizados, dispostos em esquema fatorial 2 x 5 com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos empregados foram dois cultivares de arroz de terras altas: BRS Talento (não tolerante ao Al, moderno) e Guarani (tolerante ao Al3+, tradicional), além de cinco doses de Si (0, 30, 60, 90 e 120 mg dm-3) adicionadas ao solo. O Si fornecido ao solo contribuiu amenizando a toxidez por Al em ambos os cultivares, porém só houve acréscimo em produtividade no cultivar BRS Talento. Houve correlação positiva para produtividade de grãos do cultivar BRS Talento e teor de Si nas folhas; já o teor de Al nas folhas correlacionou-se com a produtividade de forma negativa; e também houve correlação negativa entre os teores de Si e Al nas folhas, indicando que há interação entre Si e Al em plantas de arroz.

Soils with high levels of toxic Al can cause damage to plants and consequently decrease yields; a proper management is therefore essential to increase yields. Silicon can be a good alternative to reduce the toxicity of Al in the soil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the interaction between silicon and Al in rice plants grown in naturally aluminous soil. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized, 2 x 5 factorial design with four replications. The treatments consisted of two highland rice cultivars: BRS Talento - susceptible to Al toxicity, modern; Guarani - tolerant to Al toxicity, traditional, and five Si rates (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 mg dm-3). The Si supplied in soil contributes to decrease the Al toxicity in both cultivars. However the response in yield was noted only in BRS Talento cultivar. There was a positive correlation between yield of BRS Talento cultivar and Si content in leaves; Al content in leaves correlated negatively to yield; and the same behavior was noted between Si and Al in leaves. It can concluded that there is an interaction between Si and Al in plants of rice.

O uso da massa (g) ou do volume (cm³) como medida da quantidade de solo para determinação do teor de C orgânico do solo (COS), bem como a utilização de diferentes métodos de determinações analíticas empregados para essa mesma finalidade, pode alterar diretamente a interpretação dos resultados. Este trabalho teve como objetivo comparar os métodos colorimétricos e titulométricos de determinação de matéria orgânica em três solos com diferentes texturas, tomando-se as amostras por massa (pesagem) e por volume (cachimbagem). Houve variação no teor de COS entre os métodos estudados para um mesmo solo. O uso da massa e do volume alterou diretamente a interpretação dos teores de matéria orgânica no solo. Há variações nos métodos de determinação de COS entre solos de diferentes texturas.

The use of mass (g) or volume (cm³) as a measure of the amount of soil for determination of soil organic matter (SOM), as well as methods of quantitative analysis used for the same purpose, can directly affect the interpretation of results. Therefore, the methods of titulometric and colorimetric determination of organic matter were compared in three soils with different texture, sampling the soil based on mass and on volume. The organic matter content determined for a same soil differed between the methods. The use of mass or volume directly affected the interpretation of organic matter contents in soils with different texture.

A aplicação de silicato de potássio pode aumentar a disponibilidade de fósforo no solo, além de influenciar no crescimento da aveia branca. Objetivou-se neste trabalho avaliar o efeito da aplicação de doses de silicato de potássio no solo no desenvolvimento da aveia branca e na disponibilidade de fósforo. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 2 x 4, com seis repetições. Os tratamentos foram 20 e 200 mg dm-3 de P2O5 combinados com 0, 150, 300 e 450 mg dm-3 de Si, aplicados por ocasião da semeadura. Após a colheita, determinaram-se a matéria seca de folhas + colmos, das panículas e o total da parte aérea. A palha das panículas foi separada para avaliação dos teores de P e Si nas folhas + colmos, grãos e palha das panículas. As concentrações de Si e P no solo foram avaliadas após colheita das plantas. A aplicação de silicato aumenta os teores de Si no solo e influencia na maior disponibilidade de fósforo. A matéria seca de folhas + colmos é incrementada pelo silicato quando os teores iniciais de P são baixos. Mesmo com a dose elevada de P, a aplicação de silicato aumenta a disponibilidade de P no solo e a absorção pelas plantas. Os teores de Si na palha das panículas, folhas + colmos e grãos são influenciados pela maior disponibilidade do elemento no solo.

Potassium silicate application in soil can increase phosphorus availability and influence white oat growth. This work had the objective of evaluating the effects of silicate doses applied to the soil on the white oat growth and on soil P availability. The experimental design was completely randomized, with six replications, analyzed as a 2 x 4 factorial. Treatments consisted of two P doses (20 and 200 mg dm-3 of P2O5) combined with four Si doses (0, 150, 300 and 450 mg dm-3), applied at sowing. Dry matter of leaves+stems, panicles and total shoot were evaluated right after harvest. P and Si contents were evaluated in grains and panicle straw, previously separated, as well as in leaves+stems. Concentrations of Si and P in soil after harvest were also determined. Fertilization with potassium silicate increases Si levels in soil and increases P availability. Dry matter of leaves+stems is increased by silicate whenever initial P levels are low. Even considering the highest P dose, silicate application increases P availability in soil, and the plant P uptake. Si contents in panicle straw, leaves+stems and grains are influenced by the higher availability of this element in soil.

Os fertilizantes silicatados tem sido cada vez mais usados na agricultura devido a inúmeros benefícios, tais como correção da acidez de solos tropicais e efeitos positivos no desenvolvimento de gramíneas. A disponibilidade de nutrientes e a nutrição de plantas desempenham papel importante na produção de sementes e podem influenciar a qualidade fisiológica de sementes de aveia-branca (Avena sativa L.). Avaliou-se a germinação de sementes e o desenvolvimento de plântulas de aveia-branca em função da adubação com silício e fósforo. O delineamento experimental foi inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 2 x 4, com seis repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de 20 e 200 mg dm-3 de P2O5, aplicados na forma de superfosfato triplo, combinados com 0, 150, 300 e 450 mg dm-3 de Si na forma de silicato de potássio. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação, conduzindo-se sete plantas por vaso, com capacidade para 15 L de terra. As panículas foram colhidas e debulhadas manualmente e, as sementes, armazenadas em sacos de papel em condições normais de ambiente. As sementes foram avaliadas quanto ao teor de água, massa de sementes, germinação, condutividade elétrica, comprimento e massa da matéria seca de plântulas. Sementes de aveia-branca com qualidade superior são produzidas com 20 mg dm-3 de P2O5, independente da dose de Si. Sementes com maior germinação e vigor são obtidas com 300 e 450 mg dm-3 de K2SiO3, respectivamente. Os comprimentos da raiz e total das plântulas foram inferiores nas doses de Si até 300 kg ha-1, porém a dose de fósforo somente afetou o desenvolvimento das plântulas de maneira distinta quando aplicada junto com a maior dose de silício.

Silicon (Si) fertilizers have been increasingly used in agriculture due to several benefits as acidity correction in tropical soils and positive effects on the development of grasses. Nutrient availability and plant nutrition play an important role in seed production and may affect the physiological quality of white oat seeds. The present study had as objective to evaluate seed germination and seedling development of white oat (Avena sativa L.) affected by silicon and phosphorus fertilization. The experimental design was the completely randomized, analyzed as a factorial 2 x 4, with six replications. Treatments consisted of 20 and 200 mg dm-3 of P2O5, applied as triple superphosphate, combined with 0, 150, 300 and 450 mg dm-3 of Si, as potassium silicate. The experiment was carried out in greenhouse, with seven plants per 15-L pot. Panicles were harvested and threshed manually and white oat seeds were stored in paper bags under normal environmental conditions. Seeds were evaluated by moisture content, seed weight, germination, electrical conductivity, seedling length and dry matter. White oat seeds with better quality are produced with 20 mg dm-3 of P2O5 under any Si doses. Higher seed germination and vigor is obtained with 300 and 450 mg dm-3 of K2SiO3, respectively. Silicon doses decreased root and total seedling length similarly up to the dose of 300 kg ha-1 but P dose only influenced seedling development distinctively whenever applied with the higher silicon dose.

Algumas culturas têm pouca adaptação ao sistema plantio direto (SPD), em vista da alta compactação da camada superficial do solo. Nesse caso, o mecanismo utilizado na semeadora para a abertura dos sulcos para deposição do fertilizante pode ter grande importância no sentido de facilitar a penetração das raízes. Avaliouse a influência do mecanismo de distribuição de fertilizante e da adubação nitrogenada na cultura do arroz de terras altas (Oryza sativa) no sistema plantio direto. O experimento foi conduzido nos anos agrícolas 2001/2002 e 2002/2003, em Botucatu-SP, Brasil. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com parcelas subdivididas e quatro repetições. As parcelas foram constituídas por dois mecanismos de distribuição de fertilizantes (haste sulcadora e disco duplo). Nas subparcelas, quatro níveis de N foram aplicados em cobertura (0, 40, 80 e 120 kg ha-1). Avaliou-se a profundidade de abertura do sulco e de deposição das sementes, a população de plantas, a altura de plantas, o número de colmos e de panículas m-2, o número total de espiguetas por panícula, a fertilidade das espiguetas, a massa de 1.000 grãos, a matéria seca da parte aérea, a produtividade e o teor de N na folha bandeira. O sucesso no estabelecimento da cultura do arroz de terras altas no SPD nas regiões de inverno seco do Brasil está diretamente ligado ao mecanismo de distribuição das semeadoras-adubadoras. A haste sulcadora promoveu maior profundidade de deposição de sementes, conseqüentemente reduzindo o estande, o número de panículas por área e a produtividade. A aplicação de N em cobertura no arroz de terras altas em SPD proporciona maiores produtividades quando a semeadura é realizada com mecanismo de disco duplo.

Some crops have shown not to adapt to the no-tillage system (NTS) as a consequence of the compaction of the superficial soil layer. In a certain way, the mechanism used in seeders to open furrows for the deposition of fertilizers can have great importance in facilitating root penetration. This study was carried out to evaluate the influence of two fertilizer distribution mechanisms and N fertilization in upland rice (Oryza sativa) under NTS. The experiment was carried out in the growing seasons 2001/2002 and 2002/2003, in Botucatu, state of São Paulo, Brazil. A completely randomized block design was applied, with subdivided plots and four replications. Main plots consisted of two furrow opening mechanisms (furrow opener and double disk). Subplots consisted of four side dressing N levels (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg ha-1). The following parameters were evaluated: furrow and seed deposition depth, plant population, plant height, number of stems and panicles m-2, number of spikelets per panicle, spikelet fertility, weight of 1,000 grains, shoot dry matter, grain yield and N levels in the flag leaf. The success for upland rice establishment under the NTS in dry winter regions of Brazil is directly associated to the furrow opening mechanism of the seed-drill. The furrow opener mechanism resulted in deeper seed deposition, consequently decreasing seedling population, number of panicles per area and grain yield. Side dressing N fertilization in upland rice under NTS increases grain yield whenever the double disk mechanism is used to sow.
