ABSTRACT. The objective was to evaluate fertility, cyclicality behavior, and sexual performance of Pantaneiro sheep throughout the year’s photoperiods in Mato Grosso do Sul - Brazil. Two experiments were conducted. In experiment one, the ewes used aged between 2 and 4 years, distributed in three homogeneous groups of 54 animals and subjected to reproductive evaluation in three different predefined luminosity periods, consisting of autumn (11h 45 min.), spring (12h 30 min.), and summer (12h 55 min.). The characteristics studied were body weight (BW), body condition score (BCC), estrus distribution (EST), percentage of pregnant females per cycle (%P), plasma progesterone (PP), and fertility (F) in the three predefined seasons. The mating system used was controlled natural nocturnal and lasted for 45 days. Experiment two, evaluated the ram sexual activity. The males (10) were individually exposed to four ovariectomized ewes. The ewes cycled during evaluated seasons, and the highest fertility was observed in animals with BCC >2.75. The PP concentration differed among periods, and higher conception rates (F) were observed in autumn and spring. The rams (75%) had a medium of sexual performance when they performed more than two ejaculations in 20 min throughout the seasons. Pantaneiro sheep of both genders had a similar fertility index, with early and constant activity throughout the year, displaying no photoperiodism or seasonality.

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the dietary supplementation of ginger Zingiber officinale essential oil for the Neotropical catfish Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum, its effects on fish hematology, immunology, the response of these variables to induction of stress (exposition to air for 3 min), and a bacterial challenge with Aeromonas hydrophila, and the effects on liver histomorphometry. Three levels of the ginger essential oil were evaluated (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5%) in addition to a control group (0%) in a feeding trial for 65 days in triplicate. Fish hematology and immunology were assessed at five different moments: after the feeding trial (0), after the stress induction (stress), and three points after the bacterial challenge (3, 6 and 24 h post-challenge). Fish fed the ginger essential oil supplemented diets did not exhibit significant differences between the hematocrit at the 0-sample point and the 24 h post-challenge point (P ≥ 0.05), while fish fed the control diet presented significantly lower values for the hematocrit when comparing those same two moments (P < 0.05). The thrombocytes count for fish fed the 0.5% essential oil supplemented diet was significantly higher than all other groups after the feeding trial (P < 0.05), and their total leukocytes count after the stress induction was also significantly higher than the other treatments (P < 0.05). Although the results mentioned above indicate that the ginger essential oil had positive health effects on the fish, no significant differences in survival after the challenge with A. hydrophila were observed (P ≥ 0.05). Lastly, histomorphometry suggests that the essential oil did not negatively impact fish hepatocytes.

Abstract Human Papillomavirus (HPV) has considerable tropism for epithelial and mucosal tissues and can therefore be found in several anatomical sites, including the oral cavity. This study aimed to investigate the presence of HPV-DNA and the most frequent viral types in patients using full dentures, compare to patients not using full dentures and to associate its presence with socio-epidemiological and behavioral factors. The study consisted of 90 patients with or without full dentures at the time of collection, treated at a public dental clinic. The samples were obtained by exfoliating the oral cavity, and analyzed for HPV-DNA using the nested PCR with PGMY09/11 (450-bp), and general primers GP5+/GP6+ (150-bp). Genotyping was performed by specific-type PCR to HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, and 45; and Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP). Pearson’s Chi-square test (x 2 ) or Fisher’s exact test were applied and significant variables in these tests were analyzed by multinomial logistic regression analysis to estimate odds ratio (OR). HPV-DNA was detected in 27.7% of samples and, among those obtained from patients using full dentures, positivity for HPV-DNA was 41.9% (p = 0.025). The most frequent viral types were low-risk HPV 6 and 11, and high-risk HPV 31 and 45. Patients who used full dentures had an odds ratio of 2.1 to be positive for HPV DNA. Our results indicate the need for periodic dental follow-up of patients with full dentures in order to preserve the basic conditions of oral health, and also to monitor the appearance of lesions with malignant potential.

RESUMO Gymnotus inaequilabiatus é um peixe neotropical amplamente distribuído em áreas marginais de baías. O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever características anatômicas, histológicas e histopatológicas no rim cefálico e exócrino. Análises histométricas e a densidade volumétrica estrutural foram associadas ao índice renossomático (IRS). Fragmentos de ambos tecidos foram processados para análise e microscopia de campo claro. O conteúdo de lipofuscina e hemossiderina foi estimado visualmente nos centros de melanomacrófagos (CMMs). Todas as variáveis corporais biométricas foram correlacionadas com o IRS, principalmente o peso renal e a contagem de lesões superficiais. A arquitetura geral do rim cefálico e exócrino foi semelhante à descrita para outras espécies de teleósteos. Os CMMs foram frequentes em ambas as porções e correlacionaram-se com o IRS. Estruturas granulomatosas foram frequentemente observadas em ambas porções; no entanto, foram associadas ao IRS apenas no rim exócrino. De todas as estruturas estimadas histometricamente, apenas o diâmetro e espessura dos túbulos proximais e distais correlacionaram-se ao IRS. Este índice mostrou-se uma variável útil associada a características fisiológicas e morfológicas do rim de G. inaequilabiatus. Esses achados podem ser empregados em futuros estudos a fim de avaliar efeitos ambientais bem como processos adaptativos fisiológicos.

ABSTRACT The Gymnotus inaequilabiatus is a Neotropical fish widely distributed in marginal areas of bays. The aim of this study was to describe the main histological and histopathological traits in the head and exocrine kidney. Here, histometric and structural density techniques were associated with renosomatic index (RSI). The kidney was processed for light microscopy. Lipofuscin and hemosiderin content were visually estimated in the melonomacrophages centers (MMCs). All the biometric body variables were correlated with RSI, especially the kidney weight and gross lesions count. The general architecture of head and exocrine kidney was similar to that described for other teleost species. MMCs were prevalent in both portions and correlated with RSI in the head and exocrine kidney. Granulomatous structures were often observed in both portions; however, they were associated only in the exocrine kidney with RSI. Of all the structures hystometrically estimated, only proximal tubular diameter and thickness, and distal tubular thickness were correlated to renosomatic index. The RSI is an useful biometric variable that represent some physiological and morphological characteristics of kidney in G. inaequilabiatus. These findings may be used in future studies to evaluate the effects of environmental stressors on the renal adaptative physiological process.

RESUMO Introdução: O papilomavírus humano (HPV) está intimamente associado ao câncer cervical, e a presença de coinfecções, como por Chlamydia trachomatis, Gardnerella vaginalis e Trichomonas vaginalis, pode potencializar ou facilitar a infecção por HPV. As mulheres profissionais do sexo são consideradas vulneráveis à aquisição dessas infecções devido à exposição aos fatores de risco. Objetivo: Determinar a infecção por HPV, os tipos virais e as coinfecções em amostras autocoletadas de mulheres profissionais do sexo. Métodos: Amostras autocoletadas de mulheres profissionais do sexo, do canal vaginal e da cérvice uterina, foram submetidas a detecção do HPV-ácido desoxirribonucleico (DNA), genotipagem viral por reação em cadeia da polimerase (PCR) tipo específica e restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) e detecção de coinfecção. Resultados: O HPV-DNA foi detectado em 19,4% das amostras, sendo os tipos HPV 31, 6 e 53 os mais frequentes. Houve predominância de HPV de alto risco (HR-HPV) e elevada presença de infecções múltiplas (84,6%). A presença de coinfecções foi observada tanto para HPV e C. trachomatis quanto para HPV e G. vaginalis. Observou-se também que mulheres profissionais do sexo que não fazem uso de preservativos e aquelas que não realizam o exame citológico rotineiramente estão predispostas à aquisição da infecção causada pelo HPV. Conclusão: Os resultados obtidos ressaltam a importância de estudos mais abrangentes entre as populações vulneráveis, objetivando estabelecer medidas para a conscientização sobre os riscos de aquisição das infecções sexualmente transmitidas, bem como auxiliar estudos futuros para introdução de vacinas contra o HPV com maior cobertura de tipos virais.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is intimately associated with cervical cancer, and the presence of coinfections, such as with Chlamydia trachomatis, Gardnerella vaginalis and Trichomonas vaginalis, may potentiate or facilitate HPV infection. Female sex workers are considered vulnerable to the acquisition of these infections due to exposure to risk factors. Objective: To determine HPV infection, viral types and coinfections in self-collected samples from female sex workers. Methods: Self-collected samples from female sex workers, of vaginal canal and uterine cervix, were subjected to HPV-deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) detection, viral genotyping by type-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), and the detection of coinfection. Results: HPV-DNA was detected in 19.4% of the samples, and HPV 31, 6, and 53 were the most frequently detected types. There was a predominance of high-risk oncogenic HPV (HR-HPV) and a strong presence of simultaneous infections with multiple HPV types (84.6%). Coinfections with both HPV and C. trachomatis, and HPV and G. vaginalis were detected. The variables that were statistically associated with HPV infection and the presence of multiple infections were non-use of condoms and non-compliance with regular cervical cytology screening. Conclusion: The results highlight the importance of more comprehensive studies among vulnerable populations, aiming to establish measures to raise awareness about the risks of contracting sexually transmitted infections, as well as to support future studies for introducing HPV vaccines with wider coverage of viral types.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi determinar as características morfológicas e morfométricas de cistos de nematodas em fígado de Gymnotus inaequilabiatus, e a presença de centros de melanomacrófagos (CMMs) pericísticos e no parênquima hepático. Espécimes adultos, 34 fêmeas (123,1 ± 43,9 g) e 45 machos (135,5 ± 43,4g), provenientes do Rio Paraguai, Corumbá, Brasil foram utilizados. Os cistos foram quantificados em 79 fígados. Em 25 fígados foi realizada a análise histopatológica e morfometria dos cistos (diâmetro, espessura da camada de colágeno e da parede). Estimou-se a porcentagem de cistos com CMMs periférico e a densidade de CMMs no parênquima. A média de cistos macroscópicos foi de 48,7 ± 2,78. Observou-se reação granulomatosa pericística. O diâmetro, a espessura da camada de colágeno e da parede do cisto foi de 293,0 ± 75,18 (µm), 17,72 ± 6,01 (µm) e 12,21 ± 9,51 (µm), respectivamente. O número de cistos foi associado ao índice hepatossomático, (r=0,26, P <0,05). A camada de colágeno correlacionou-se com o diâmetro do cisto (r=0,62, P <0,01). CMMs pericísticos e do parênquima apresentaram correlação moderada (r=0,48) e alta (r=0,90) com o número de cistos, respectivamente. As características morfológicas do tecido hepático e a morfometria dos cistos de nematodas sugerem que G. inaequilabiatus atua como hospedeiro paratênico para larvas de nematodas.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine the morphometric measures and morphological aspects of nematode-cysts in Gymnotus inaequilabiatus, and the presence of melanomacrophage centers (MMCs) associated with the periphery of cysts and in the liver parenchyma. Adult specimens, 34 female (123.1 ± 43.9g) and 45 male (135.5 ± 43.4g), from Paraguay River, Corumbá, Brazil, were used. The number of nematode-cysts was determined in 79 livers and 25 of them randomly selected for histopathological analysis and morphometric measures of nematode-cysts (mean diameter, thickness of collagen layer, and cyst-wall layer). The percentage of cysts with MMCs on the periphery and density in the liver parenchyma was estimated. The average number of macroscopic cysts was of 48.7 ± 2.78. Granulomatous reaction was observed surrounding the cysts. Diameter, collagen layer and cyst-wall measurements were 293.0 ± 75.18 (µm), 17.72 ± 6.01 (µm) and 12.21 ± 9.51 (µm), respectively. The number of nematode-cysts was correlated with hepatosomatic index, (r=0.26, P<0.05). Collagen layer was correlated with cyst diameter (r=0.62, P<0.01). Pericystic and parenchymatous MMCs were moderately (r=0.48) and highly (r=0.90) correlated with nematode-cysts number. Morphological characteristics of hepatic tissue and cysts-nematodes measures suggest that G. inaequilabiatus acts as a paratenic host to nematodes in the larval stage.

RESUMO Introdução: A infecção persistente por papilomavírus humano (HPV) é a principal causa do câncer cervical e suas lesões precursoras, e a resposta imune inadequada está entre os fatores que contribuem para a persistência viral. Isso pode ser influenciado por células T regulatórias (Treg) e pela produção de citocinas imunossupressoras, como o fator de transformação de crescimento beta (TGF-β) e a interleucina 10 (IL-10). Objetivo: Estabelecemos o perfil de resposta predominante, resposta Th1 ou imunossupressora, no microambiente tecidual, pela detecção de interferon gama (IFN-γ), TGF-β, e IL-10, bem como a coexpressão do receptor da cadeia alfa da IL-2 (CD25) e do forkhead box P3 (FOXP3). Método: Setenta e quatro amostras de biópsias de cérvice uterina, submetidas à detecção do ácido desoxirribonucleico (DNA) de HPV e à análise histopatológica, foram utilizadas nas reações de imuno-histoquímica para detectar IFN-γ, TGF-β, IL-10 e CD25/FOXP3 em linfócitos. Resultados: O microambiente das amostras de lesões intraepiteliais escamosas de alto grau (HSIL) com elevado números de partículas virais (≥ 10.000 cópias/ml) continha elevado número de células CD25/FOXP3+, TGF-β+, IL-10+ e IFN-γ+. Conclusão: A coexpressão de CD25/FOXP3 e a expressão de TGF-β nas amostras HSIL sugerem a existência de células Treg nesses locais, embora a expressão de IFN-γ tenha sido observada em várias células. Nossos dados sugerem que essa citocina pode estar relacionada com a manutenção do microambiente imunossuprimido, favorecendo a infecção persistente por HPV e a progressão para carcinoma.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) persistent infection is the leading cause of cervical cancer and its precursor lesions, and the inappropriate immune response is among the factors that contribute to viral persistence. This may be influenced by regulatory T (Treg) cells and the production of immunosuppressive cytokines, such as transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) and interleukin-10 (IL-10). Objective: We established the profile of the predominant response, Th1 or immunosuppressive response, in the tissue microenvironment, by detecting interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), TGF-β, and IL-10, as well as the co-expression of IL-2 receptor alpha (CD25) and forkhead box P3 (FOXP3). Methods: Seventy-four samples from uterine cervix biopsies that underwent HPV deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) detection and histopathology analysis were immunostained to detect CD25/FOXP3, IFN-γ and suppressive cytokines in lymphocytes. Results: The microenvironment of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) samples with high numbers of viral particles (≥ 10,000 copies/ml) contained high numbers of CD25/FOXP3+, TGF-β+, IL-10+, and IFN-γ+ cells. Conclusion: The co-expression of CD25/FOXP3 and the expression of TGF-β, and IL-10 in HSIL samples suggest the existence of Treg cells in these locations, although IFN-γ expression was observed in several cells in these samples. Our data suggest that this cytokine could be related to immunosuppressed microenvironment maintenance, favoring the persistent HPV infection and the progression to carcinoma.

SUMMARY The Aquidauana municipality is considered an endemic area of leishmaniasis and an important tourist site in Mato Grosso do Sul State. The aim of this study was to investigate the sand fly fauna in the city of Aquidauana. Captures were carried out twice a month, from April 2012 to March 2014 with automatic light traps and active aspiration, in the peridomicile and domicile of six residences. A total of 9,338 specimens were collected, 3,179 and 6,159 using light traps and active aspiration, respectively. The fauna consisted of: Brumptomyia brumpti, Evandromyia aldafalcaoae, Ev. evandroi, Ev. lenti, Ev. orcyi, Ev. sallesi, Ev. termitophila, Ev. walkeri, Lutzomyia longipalpis and Psathyromyia bigeniculata. The most abundant species captured was Lutzomyia longipalpis, present in all the ecotopes, predominantly in peridomicile areas, and mainly males. Leishmania DNA was not detected in the insects. It was observed the abundance of the sand fly fauna in the region, as well as the high frequency of Lu. longipalpis, the main vector of L. infantum. The results of this study show the need to increase the monitoring and more effective control measures. It is noteworthy that the studied region presents several activities related to tourism and recreation, increasing the risk of transmission of leishmaniasis to this particular human population.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To understand the evolution of AIDS over time in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, using incidence, lethality, and mortality coefficients. METHODS: A descriptive epidemiological study based on time series analysis of secondary data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System reported between 1985 and 2012. RESULTS: The prevalence of AIDS was higher among men, with evidence of feminization during the first 14 years of the epidemic. There was no statistically significant sex difference in AIDS lethality. Women were 1.3 times more likely to survive than men. CONCLUSIONS: Gender differences must be considered when designing new HIV/AIDS prevention strategies.

Women infected with human papillomavirus (HPV) are at a higher risk of developing cervical lesions. In the current study, self and clinician-collected vaginal and cervical samples from women were processed to detect HPV DNA using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with PGMY09/11 primers. HPV genotypes were determined using type-specific PCR. HPV DNA detection showed good concordance between self and clinician-collected samples (84.6%; kappa = 0.72). HPV infection was found in 30% women and genotyping was more concordant among high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) than low-risk HPV (HR-HPV). HPV16 was the most frequently detected among the HR-HPV types. LR-HPV was detected at a higher frequency in self-collected; however, HR-HPV types were more frequently identified in clinician-collected samples than in self-collected samples. HPV infections of multiple types were detected in 20.5% of clinician-collected samples and 15.5% of self-collected samples. In this study, we demonstrated that the HPV DNA detection rate in self-collected samples has good agreement with that of clinician-collected samples. Self-collected sampling, as a primary prevention strategy in countries with few resources, could be effective for identifying cases of HR-HPV, being more acceptable. The use of this method would enhance the coverage of screening programs for cervical cancer.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify highly oncogenic forms of human papillomavirus in the oral mucosa of asymptomatic men.METHODS: In this study, we analyzed samples of exfoliated cells from the oral cavity of 559 asymptomatic men. DNA-human papillomavirus was detected using the consensus primers PGMY09/11; viral genotyping was performed using type-specific PCR and restriction fragment length polymorphism.RESULTS: DNA-human papillomavirus was detected in 1.3% of the study participants and of those 42.8% were infected by more than one type of virus. Viral types included HPV6, 11, 89 (low oncogenic risk), and HPV52, 53 (high oncogenic risk). Increased vulnerability to human papillomavirus infection was observed in individuals aged over 26 years, among those who reported oral sex practices, and in those who have had more than 16 sexual partners since first engaging in sexual intercourse.CONCLUSIONS: There was a low prevalence of human papillomavirus detection in the oral mucosa of asymptomatic men. Highly oncogenic human papillomavirus types and infection by more than one viral type was observed. Oral sex practices and a large number of sexual partners may increase the risk of acquiring human papillomavirus infection.

Introduction The progression of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in the anogenital tract has been associated with the involvement of cells with regulatory properties. Evidence has shown that glucocorticoid-induced tumor necrosis factor receptor (GITR) is an important surface molecule for the characterization of these cells and proposes that GITR ligand may constitute a rational treatment for many cancer types. We aimed to detect the presence of GITR and CD25 in cervical stroma cells with and without pathological changes or HPV infection to better understand the immune response in the infected tissue microenvironment. Methods We subjected 49 paraffin-embedded cervical tissue samples to HPV DNA detection and histopathological analysis, and subsequently immunohistochemistry to detect GITR and CD25 in lymphocytes. Results We observed that 76.9% of all samples with high GITR expression were HPV-positive regardless of histopathological findings. High GITR expression (77.8%) was predominant in samples with ≥1,000 RLU/PCB. Of the HPV-positive samples negative for intraepithelial lesion and malignancy, 62.5% had high GITR expression. High GITR expression was observed in both carcinoma and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) samples (p = 0.16). CD25 was present in great quantities in all samples. Conclusions The predominance of high GITR expression in samples with high viral load that were classified as HSIL and carcinoma suggests that GITR+ cells can exhibit regulatory properties and may contribute to the progression of HPV-induced cervical neoplasia, emphasizing the importance of GITR as a potential target for immune therapy of cervical cancer and as a disease evolution biomarker.

The relationships between environmental exposure to risk agents and health conditions have been studied with the aid of remote sensing imagery, a tool particularly useful in the study of vegetation cover. This study aims to evaluate the influence of environmental variables on the spatial distribution of the abundance of Lutzomyia longipalpis and the reported canine and human visceral leishmaniasis (VL) cases at an urban area of Campo Grande, state of Mato Grosso do Sul. The sandfly captures were performed in 13 residences that were selected by raffle considering four residences or collection station for buffer. These buffers were generated from the central house with about 50, 100 and 200 m from it in an endemic area of VL. The abundance of sandflies and human and canine cases were georreferenced using the GIS software PCI Geomatica. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and percentage of land covered by vegetation were the environmental variables extracted from a remote sensing IKONOS-2 image. The average NDVI was considered as the complexity of habitat and the standard deviation as the heterogeneity of habitat. One thousand three hundred sixty-seven specimens were collected during the catch. We found a significant positive linear correlation between the abundance of sandflies and the percentage of vegetation cover and average NDVI. However, there was no significant association between habitat heterogeneity and the abundance of these flies.

INTRODUÇÃO: Alguns tipos de papilomavirus humano (HPV) estão envolvidos em processos malignos no epitélio cervical, com 99% dos casos atribuídos à infecção por HPV oncogênico. O objetivo deste estudo foi detectar a proteína S100, CD68 e moléculas de MHC-II (complexo principal de histocompatibilidade classe II) em amostras de epitélio cervical uterino, de pacientes com lesões de alto e baixo grau induzidas pelo HPV. MÉTODOS: Cinquenta e oito amostras de pacientes positivos ou negativos, confirmados, para DNA de HPV de alto ou baixo risco oncogênico, e que tiveram diagnóstico histopatológico de neoplasia intraepithelial cervical (NIC) de graus I, II ou III ou foram negativas para lesão intraepithelial e malignidade (NILM), foram submetidas à reação de imunohistoquímica (IHQ) para proteína S100, CD68 e MHC-II (HLA-DR cadeia alfa). RESULTADOS: A presença da molécula MHC-II predominou em amostras exibindo alterações histopatológicas (p < 0,05). A detecção de S100+ foi mais numerosa em amostras com carcinoma (NIC III) (75%). A presença dessa proteína correlacionou-se significantemente (p < 0,05) com achados histopatológicos e a carga viral. CONCLUSÕES: Pequena expressão CD68+ foi observada, uma possível explicação seria que em nosso estudo as observações foram feitas em campo microscópicos aleatórios e não em áreas específicas. Os achados como a presença de S100 e a expressão de MHC-II, em amostras com alterações histológicas, podem sugerir que o sistema imune falha em controlar a replicação do HPV nas fases iniciais da infecção. Maiores estudos, com mais dados prospectivos, são necessários para confirmar esses resultados.

INTRODUCTION: Some human papillomavirus (HPV) types are involved in malignant processes in the cervical epithelium, with 99% of cases attributed to oncogenic HPV infection. This study aimed to detect S100, CD68, and major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) molecules in cervical uterine epithelial samples in patients with high- and low-grade lesions induced by HPV. METHODS: Fifty-eight samples from patients who were confirmed positive or negative for high-risk oncogenic HPV DNA, had histopathological diagnosis of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) of grades I, II, or III, or were negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy were subjected to immunohistochemistry reaction to S100 protein, CD68, and MHC-II (HLA-DR alpha chain). RESULTS: The presence of MHC-II predominated in samples exhibiting histopathological alterations (p < 0.05). S100 detection was more numerous in carcinoma samples (CIN III) (75%). Presence of this protein correlated significantly (p < 0.05) with histopathological findings and viral load. CONCLUSIONS: A small expression of CD68 was observed, which may be explained by the observation in our study having been made on random microscopic fields and not on specific areas. The findings, such as the presence of S100 protein and MHC-II expression in samples with histological alterations, could suggest that the immune system fails to control HPV replication at the early stages of infection. Further studies with larger prospective data are necessary to confirm this result.

Mediante a revisão dos arquivos das fichas de necropsia do Laboratório de Patologia Animal, Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso do Sul, foram estudados a epidemiologia, o quadro clínico e a patologia de 29 surtos de intoxicação por Brachiaria spp., ocorridos em bovinos de corte, no Mato Grosso do Sul, de março de 1996 a novembro de 2009. Os surtos ocorreram em todas as épocas do ano, tanto na seca quanto na chuva. Em 24 dos 29 surtos o principal sinal clínico foi a fotossensibilização e em cinco o principal sinal foi o emagrecimento progressivo. Dos 24 surtos de fotossensibilização, 11 ocorreram em pastagens de B. decumbens, dois em pastagens mistas de B. decumbens e B. brizantha, um em B. brizantha e em 10 surtos não foi informada a espécie de Brachiaria envolvida. A morbidade variou de 0,2% a 50% e a letalidade de 44,4% a 100%. Nos casos de fotossensibilização o edema de barbela foi o sinal clínico mais encontrado em bovinos, seguido de dermatite com pele espessada no flanco e períneo, retração cicatricial auricular, icterícia, corrimento ocular. crostas auriculares e oculares, e ulcerações na parte ventral da língua. Em dois surtos foram observados sinais nervosos e em um, diarréia. Nas necropsias o fígado estava aumentado de tamanho, amarelado, com padrão lobular aumentado e, ocasionalmente, com áreas esbranquiçadas e deprimidas. Os rins estavam acastanhados e a urina escura. No exame histológico do fígado encontrou-se tumefação e vacuolização de hepatócitos, proliferação de células epiteliais dos ductos biliares, retenção biliar, fibroplasia periportal discreta ou moderada e infiltrado mononuclear periportal. Todos os casos de fotossensibilização apresentaram macrófagos espumosos no parênquima hepático e em 21 foram observados cristais birrefringentes nos ductos biliares. Cinco surtos com emagrecimento progressivo dos bovinos afetados foram diagnosticados em pastagens de B. decumbens. A principal lesão macroscópica foi o fígado aumentado de volume e amarelado. No estudo histológico, as lesões foram semelhantes às observadas nos casos de fotossensibilização, sendo que cristais refringentes nos ductos biliares foram observados em três animais. Conclui-se que B. decumbens é mais tóxica que B. brizantha e que a intoxicação ocorre, principalmente, em bovinos jovens nas diferentes épocas do ano. No entanto, pesquisas são necessárias para determinar as variações no conteúdo de saponinas litogênicas em Brachiaria spp. e as diferenças de resistência/susceptibilidade à intoxicação de bovinos de diferentes idades e raças em diferentes regiões.

The epidemiology, clinical signs and pathology of 29 outbreaks of spontaneous poisoning by Brachiaria spp. in beef cattle, which occurred from March 1996 to November 2009, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, were retrospectively studied. For this, the files of the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul were reviewed. Outbreaks occurred at different times of the year, including dry and rainy seasons. While photosensitization was the main clinical sign in cattle from 24 out of 29 outbreaks, in five of them the main clinical sign was progressive wasting, without photosensitization. Eleven outbreaks of photosensitization occurred in pastures of Brachiaria decumbens, two in mixed pastures of B. decumbens and B. brizantha, and one in B. brizantha. In 10 outbreaks the species of Brachiaria was not informed. Morbidity ranged from 0.2% to 50%, and fatality rates were between 44.4% and 100%. In cases of photosensitization brisket edema was the most frequent clinical sign observed. Dermatitis with thickened skin of the flank and perineal region, scar retraction of the ears, jaundice, ocular discharge, crusts in the eyes and ears, and ulceration of the ventral surface of the tongue were also observed. Nervous signs were observed in two cases and diarrhea in one. At necropsy the liver was enlarged, yellowish, with increased lobular pattern, and occasionally with depressed whitish areas. The kidneys were brownish and the urine dark. Upon histological examination of the liver the hepatocytes were swollen and vacuolized. Individual necrosis of hepatocytes, bile duct cell proliferation, biliary retention, and mild to moderate periportal fibrosis were also observed. In all cases foamy macrophages, most in groups, were observed mainly in the centrilobular region. In 21 cattle birefringent crystals were observed within the bile ducts. Five outbreaks of progressive wasting were observed in cattle grazing B. decumbens pastures. The main lesion was an enlarged yellowish liver. Histologic lesions were similar to those observed in cases of photosensitization. Birefringent crystals were observed in the liver of three cases, but foamy macrophages were found in all animals. It is concluded that B. decumbens is more toxic than B. brizantha and that the poisoning occurs at any time of the year. Nevertheless, research is still necessary to determine variations in the saponin content of Brachiaria species and the probable differences on susceptibility/resistance to the poisoning of cattle of different ages, breeds and from different regions.
