RESUMO Objetivo caracterizar a produção da fala de crianças e adolescentes usuários de aparelho de amplificação sonora individual (AASI) ou implante coclear (IC) de um programa de reabilitação auditiva. Métodos estudo observacional transversal. Foram analisadas amostras de fala de 15 participantes de um programa de reabilitação auditiva, que consistiam na prova de fonologia do ABFW (ABFW - Teste de Linguagem Infantil nas Áreas de Fonologia, Vocabulário, Fluência e Pragmática) e na fala espontânea, adaptada do Protocolo de Avaliação de Voz do Deficiente Auditivo. Foi aplicado o teste de Wilcoxon para comparar os índices de Porcentagem de Consoantes Corretas (PCC) e Porcentagem de Consoantes Corretas revisado (PCC-r) das provas de fonologia e o teste de Mann-Whitney para comparar os referidos índices, em relação aos graus de inteligibilidade da fala espontânea. Também foi analisada a variabilidade de produção dos fonemas das provas de fonologia. Resultados verificou-se desvio leve nos índices de PCC e PCC-r para as provas de fonologia, com escores superiores para o PCC-r. Os participantes com médias maiores que 85% alcançaram inteligibilidade “Boa” e participantes com médias entre 85% e 50% apresentaram inteligibilidade “Regular/Insuficiente”. Os usuários de AASI não produziram adequadamente os fonemas /s/, /z/, /Ʒ/ /ɲ/, /l, /ʎ/, arquifonema /S/ e arquifonema /R/ e os usuários de IC, os fonemas /ʎ/ e arquifonema /R/. Conclusão o grupo estudado apresentou desvio leve nos índices de PCC e PCC-r, com médias superiores, quando considerada a distorção como acerto. Participantes com inteligibilidade “Boa” apresentaram maiores escores de PCC e PCC-r. Usuários de AASI não produziram fonemas fricativos adequadamente. Foram observadas produções com variação linguística social e regional.

ABSTRACT Purpose To characterize the speech production of children and adolescents from an auditory rehabilitation program who use hearing aids (HA) or cochlear implant (CI). Methods Cross-sectional observational study. Speech samples from 15 participants of a hearing rehabilitation program were analyzed through the phonology test of the ABFW Test and spontaneous conversation, which were adapted from the Protocol for the Evaluation of Voice in Subjects with Hearing Impairment. The Wilcoxon test was used to compare the Percentage of Consonants Correct (PCC) and the Percentage of Consonants Correct–revised (PCC-r) indexes of the phonology test, and the Mann-Whitney test was used to compare these indexes to the degrees of intelligibility of spontaneous conversation. The variability of production of the phonemes of the phonology tests was also analyzed. Results There was a mild deviation in the PCC and PCC-r indexes for the phonology tests, with higher scores for the PCC-r. Participants with averages greater than 85% achieved “Good” intelligibility, and participants with averages between 85% and 50% had “Regular/Insufficient” intelligibility. The HA users did not properly produce the phonemes /s/, /z/, /Ʒ/ /ɲ/, /l, /ʎ/, the archiphoneme /S/, and the archiphoneme /R/. The CI users did not properly produce the phonemes /ʎ/ and the archiphoneme /R/. Conclusion The group had a mild deviation in the PCC and PCC-r indexes, with higher means when the distortion was considered correct. Participants with “Good” intelligibility had higher PCC and PCC-r scores. HA users did not produce fricative phonemes properly. There were productions with a social and regional linguistic variation.

RESUMO Objetivo: Comparar os resultados acústicos e perceptivo-auditivos da voz de crianças e adolescentes deficientes auditivos com pares ouvintes e correlacionar estes resultados com o relato dos pais em relação à percepção auditiva da fala. Método: Os participantes foram divididos em dois grupos: grupo I, 20 crianças e adolescentes deficientes auditivos, e grupo II, 20 crianças e adolescentes ouvintes. Foi realizada análise acústica da vogal /a/ e avaliação perceptivo-uditiva da vogal /a/ e da fala. A percepção auditiva do GI foi avaliada utilizando a Escala de Integração Auditiva Significativa para Crianças Pequenas e a Escala de Integração Auditiva Significativa, com adaptação para participantes adolescentes. Os resultados acústicos e perceptivo-auditivos da voz de GI e GII foram comparados e, para o GI, estes resultados foram correlacionados com o desempenho na percepção auditiva. Resultados: Os grupos I e II apresentaram resultados similares, diferenciando-se estatisticamente nos parâmetros variação da frequência fundamental (vF0) e variação da amplitude (vAm) da vogal /a/ e ressonância da fala. Houve correlação negativa entre o desempenho na percepção auditiva com os parâmetros de jitter, vF0 e grau geral da vogal /a/. Conclusão: A qualidade vocal do GI foi semelhante em praticamente todos os parâmetros vocais analisados a dos seus pares ouvintes (G2). A percepção auditiva influenciou os parâmetros jitter, vF0 e grau geral do impacto da voz, em que crianças e adolescentes deficientes auditivos que apresentaram maiores escores para a percepção auditiva também foram capazes de manter a emissão vocal mais equilibrada.

ABSTRACT Purpose: To compare the acoustic and perceptual-auditory results of the hearing impaired children and adolescents with hearing pairs and to correlate these results with parents’ reports regarding speech auditory perception. Method: The participants were divided into two groups: Group I, 20 hearing-impaired children and adolescents and Group II, 20 children and adolescents with normal hearing. Acoustic analysis of the vowel /a/ and perceptual-auditory assessment of the vowel /a/ and speech were performed. The speech auditory perception of the GI was assessed using the Infant-Toddler Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale and the Meaningful Auditory Integration Scale with adaptation for adolescent participants. The acoustic and perceptual-auditory voice results of the GI and GII were compared and these results were correlated with the performance in the auditory perception of the GI group. Results: The groups I and II presented similar results, differing statistically in the long-term frequency variation (vF0) and the long-term amplitude variation (vAm) parameters of the vowel /a/ and speech resonance parameter. It was found a negative correlation between auditory perception performance with jitter, vF0 and general degree of vowel /a/. Conclusion: The vocal quality in GI was similar to their hearing peers in almost all the vocal parameters that were analyzed. The auditory perception influenced jitter, vF0 and general degree of voice parameters, in which hearing-impaired children and adolescents who presented higher scores for auditory perception were also able to keep a more controlled vocal emission.

RESUMO Objetivo: realizar revisão integrativa da literatura sobre as características acústicas da produção da voz saudável, da infância à terceira idade. Métodos: foi realizado levantamento bibliográfico nas bases de dados Pubmed, Scielo, Medline e Lilacs, nos últimos dez anos. Foram encontrados 19 estudos que atenderam aos critérios propostos e investigaram as medidas acústicas: F0 (Frequência Fundamental), jitter, shimmer e/ou medidas de ruído, em homens e mulheres, com vozes normais, em diferentes fases da vida. Resultados: a análise mostrou que F0 é o parâmetro acústico que mais sofre mudanças com o crescimento e o envelhecimento da população, apresentando queda gradativa de seus valores da infância à velhice, na população feminina, enquanto que em homens, a redução acontece até a fase adulta. Jitter, shimmer e ruído permanecem estáveis durante a fase infantil e adulta, enquanto shimmer e medidas de ruído aumentam na terceira idade. Na literatura, não há consenso a respeito do aumento da medida de jitter na população idosa. Conclusão: da infância à terceira idade, em ambos os sexos, ocorrem mudanças vocais que são refletidas principalmente pela F0. Há escassez de informações acústicas derivadas de uma determinada população com ampla faixa etária, utilizando uma mesma metodologia. As informações deste estudo podem orientar futuras investigações que buscarão compreender as mudanças naturais ocorridas na voz humana e, também, guiar a prática clínica.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to carry out an integrative literature review about the acoustic characteristics of healthy voice production, from childhood to old age. Methods: a bibliographic survey was conducted on the databases PubMed, SciELO, MEDLINE and LILACS, covering the last 10 years. Nineteen studies were found, meeting the proposed criteria, on acoustic measurements: F0 (fundamental frequency), jitter, shimmer and/or noise measurements, in males and females, with normal voices in their different stages of life. Results: the analysis showed that F0 is the most changing acoustic parameter as people grow up and grow old. Its values present gradual fall from childhood to old age in the female population, whereas among men such decrease lasts until adulthood. Jitter, shimmer and noise remain stable throughout childhood and adulthood, while shimmer and noise measurements increase in old age. In the literature, there is no consensus regarding increase of jitter measurements in the elderly. Conclusion: from childhood to old age, in both genders, vocal changes take place which are reflected, especially by F0. There is a scarcity of information on acoustics related to specific populations with ample age range, using the same methodology. The information in this study may guide future investigations aiming to understand natural changes occurring in the human voice, in addition to guiding in the clinical practice.

RESUMO Objetivo Caracterizar as vozes de indivíduos adultos sem queixas vocais e verificar o efeito de gênero e idade a partir de um conjunto de medidas acústicas. Método Foram analisadas 176 gravações de vozes pertencentes a adultos com idades entre 19 e 59 anos, divididas em quatro grupos etários, por década, armazenadas em uma base de dados. Todas as vozes analisadas foram classificadas com ausência de desvio na qualidade vocal. Realizou-se análise acústica dos parâmetros: Frequência Fundamental (vogal sustentada e fala encadeada), Jitter , Shimmer e Noise-to-Harmonic Ratio por meio software Multi Dimension Voice Program (KayPentax). O efeito de gênero, idade e possíveis interações foram verificados por meio do teste Anova Fatorial. Quando necessário, realizou-se post hoc com o teste Least Significant Difference. Resultados Houve mudanças na voz em função da idade, com diminuição da Frequência Fundamental nas modalidades vogal e fala encadeada em mulheres e na Frequência Fundamental da fala em homens. Em homens, foi observado aumento da medida de shimmer com o avanço da idade. Foram verificadas diferenças entre os gêneros nas medidas de Frequência Fundamental, Jitte r e Noise to Harmonic Ratio. Conclusão Mudanças vocais decorrentes do avanço da idade podem ser identificadas acusticamente, no final da fase adulta e, em mulheres, essas mudanças podem ser marcadas previamente ao período da menopausa.

ABSTRACT Purpose Characterize voices of adult individuals without vocal complaints and verify the effect of gender and age with the use of acoustic measures. Methods One-hundred and seventy-six voice recordings belonging to adults between 19 and 59 years old, divided into four age groups, for decade, recorded in a database were analyzed. All voices analyzed were classified with no deviation in vocal quality. Acoustic analysis of the parameters was performed: Fundamental Frequency (sustained vowel and connected speech), Jitter, Shimmer and Noise-to-Harmonic Ratio through Multi Dimension Voice Program (KayPentax) software. The effect of gender, age and possible interactions were verified through the Factorial Anova test. When necessary, post hoc was performed with the Least Significant Difference test. Results There were changes in the voice as a function of age, with a decrease in the Fundamental Frequency in the vowel and connected speech modalities in women and in the Fundamental Frequency of the speech in men. In men, an increase in shimmer measure was observed with the advancing age. Differences between genders were found in the measures of Fundamental Frequency, Jitter and Noise to Harmonic Ratio. Conclusion Vocal changes due to advancing age can be identified acoustically at the end of adulthood, and in women, these changes can be marked previously to the menopausal period.

RESUMO Este trabalho pretende verificar o efeito imediato e em médio prazo na voz e na laringe de dois idosos submetidos à terapia vocal intensiva com progressão de intensidade e frequência vocais e de duração do tempo de fonação. Dois idosos (um homem, 79 anos e uma mulher, 82 anos) com queixa vocal e características de presbilaringe, realizaram 12 sessões de terapia vocal intensiva com progressão de intensidade e frequência da voz e duração do tempo de fonação, durante três semanas. Para analisar o efeito terapêutico foram realizadas avaliações perceptivoauditivas e acústicas da voz, de tempo máximo de fonação (TMF), de autorreferência da qualidade de vida em voz e do comportamento laríngeo nos momentos pré, imediatamente após e um mês depois do processo de terapia vocal. Os valores da maioria das medidas resultantes dessas avaliações indicaram mudanças positivas imediatamente após a terapia vocal para os idosos. Observou-se redução das medidas perceptivoauditivas de desvio da qualidade vocal e diminuição das medidas de perturbação e ruído do sinal acústico, o que indica melhora na voz. Houve elevação da frequência fundamental e, aumento do TMF, além de autorreferência de melhor qualidade de vida em voz. A avaliação das imagens laríngeas não mostrou diferença consistente. Após um mês do término da terapia alguns parâmetros pioraram em relação ao momento pós-imediato, mesmo assim, permaneceram melhores em relação ao momento pré-terapia. Desta forma os resultados da proposta terapêutica são promissores e seus efeitos devem ser pesquisados em estudos clínicos controlados para verificar sua eficácia em idosos.

ABSTRACT This study aims to verify the immediate and medium-term effects of an intensive voice therapy, with progression of vocal intensity and frequency and phonation time, on the voice and larynx of two elderly. A 79-year-old male and an 82-year-old female with vocal complaints and presbylarynx characteristics underwent 12 sessions of intensive voice therapy, with progression of voice intensity and frequency and phonation time, for three weeks. To analyze the therapeutic effects, the following assessments were performed pre-, post-immediately, and one month after voice therapy: auditory-perceptual analyses of the voice, acoustic analysis, and evaluation of maximum phonation time (MPT), self-reference voice-related quality of life, and laryngeal behavior. Most results of these measurements indicated positive changes immediately after voice therapy. There was reduction in the measures of vocal quality deviation, perturbation, and harmonics-to-noise pre-, post-immediately, and one month after voice therapy, which indicates vocal improvement. There was increase in fundamental frequency, maximum phonation time and self-reference voice-related quality of life. Assessment of the laryngeal images showed no consistent difference. One month after voice therapy, worsening of some results was observed compared with the post-immediate assessment, but improvements were maintained in relation to the initial evaluation. The results of this therapeutic proposal are promising, and their effects should be investigated in controlled clinical trials to verify their efficacy.

RESUMO Objetivo Verificar variação da qualidade vocal após realização da técnica de vibração sonorizada de língua associada à estimulação nervosa elétrica transcutânea (TVSL+TENS) sobre a laringe em mulheres com função laríngea normal. Verificar, ainda, a influência do tempo de realização desta técnica na voz. Método Participaram 40 mulheres (média 23,4 anos) sem queixas ou alterações vocais. Foi realizada TVSL associada ou não à TENS por 3 minutos, descanso e realização da técnica por mais 2 minutos (total 5 min). Foram feitas gravações das vozes antes (Pré), após três minutos (Pós 3 min) e após dois minutos adicionais de técnica (Pós 5 min). Utilizou-se a corrente TENS, com dois eletrodos sobre a cartilagem tireóidea. Realizou-se autoavaliação, avaliação acústica e perceptivoauditiva. Resultados Ao comparar TVSL isolada e TVSL+TENS observou-se que a combinação das técnicas resultou em sensação de maior estabilidade na emissão vocal (autoavaliação) e melhor ganho na qualidade vocal (avaliação perceptivoauditiva). Não houve diferença estatística nos achados acústicos entre TVSL e TVSL+TENS. Ao considerar a TVSL+TENS e comparar seu tempo de realização, observou-se, na autoavaliação, sensação de menor tensão muscular (3 min) e maior conforto da emissão (5 min); na análise acústica, elevação de F0 (3 e 5 min) e intensidade (5 min), em relação ao momento Pré; e na avaliação perceptivoauditiva, melhor qualidade vocal (3 min). Conclusão Comparando TVSL isolada e TVSL+TENS, houve mudanças na sensação de conforto e tensão muscular e também, na qualidade vocal. Por outro lado, a TVSL+TENS realizada em 3 ou 5 mintuos resultou em efeitos benéficos na voz, identificados nas avaliações realizadas.

ABSTRACT Purpose To investigate vocal quality variability after applying tongue trills associated with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on the larynx of women with normal laryngeal function. Additionally, to verify the effect of this technique over time on voice quality. Methods Participants were 40 women (average 23.4 years) without vocal complaints. The procedure involved tongue trills with or without TENS for 3 minutes, rest and repeating the technique for another 2 minutes. The participants’ voices were recorded before (Pre), after three minutes (Post 3min) and after two additional minutes (Post 5min) applying the technique. TENS with two electrodes was used on the thyroid cartilage. Self-assessment, acoustic and perceptual analysis were performed. Results When comparing tongue trills in isolation and associated with TENS, a greater sense of stability in phonation (self-assessment) and improvement in voice quality (perceptual evaluation) was observed in the combination technique. There was no statistical difference in acoustics findings between tongue trills in isolation and associated with TENS. When comparing the time effect of tongue trills with TENS in self-assessment there was a perception of less muscle tension (3min) and greater comfort during phonation (5 min); in the acoustic analysis, there was an increase of F0 (3 and 5 min) and intensity (5 min) when compared to Pre-moment; in the perceptual evaluation, better voice quality (3min). Conclusion Comparing tongue trills in isolation and associated with TENS, there were changes in the comfort and muscle tension perception, as well as in vocal quality. On the other hand, tongue trills associated with TENS performed in 3 or 5 minutes resulted in beneficial effects on the voice identified in the assessments.

OBJETIVO: Comparar a autopercepção vocal e as queixas vocais reportadas por dois grupos de alunas do curso de Pedagogia (ingressantes e formandas); relacionar a autopercepção vocal com as queixas vocais nesses grupos e comparar a qualidade vocal das alunas desses grupos por meio da avaliação perceptivo-auditiva e da análise acústica. MÉTODOS: Inicialmente, 89 estudantes de um curso de Pedagogia responderam a um questionário sobre a autopercepção da qualidade vocal e queixas vocais. Numa segunda etapa foram realizadas análises perceptivo-auditiva e acústica das vozes de 48 participantes, por meio de gravações de emissão de vogal sustentada e leitura de poema. RESULTADOS: As queixas vocais mais relatadas foram cansaço no uso da voz, dor na garganta, esforço para falar, irritação ou ardor na garganta, rouquidão, tensão na nuca e variações da voz ao longo do dia. Houve maior ocorrência de queixas entre as formandas, quando comparadas com as ingressantes, mas com diferença significativa para quatro das nove queixas. Também foi possível observar a relação entre a autopercepção vocal e as referidas queixas dessas alunas. Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas nos resultados da análise perceptivo-auditiva, entretanto, algumas formandas tiveram suas vozes avaliadas com maior severidade de desvio da normalidade. Na análise acústica não houve diferença entre os grupos. CONCLUSÃO: O aumento da demanda vocal pelas formandas pode ter provocado o maior número e diversidade de queixas vocais, sendo que várias delas se relacionaram com a autoavaliação da qualidade vocal. As avaliações perceptivo-auditiva e acústica não mostraram desvios na voz.

PURPOSE: To compare the vocal self-perception and vocal complaints reported by two groups of students of the pedagogy course (freshmen and graduates); to relate the vocal self-perception to the vocal complaints for these groups; and to compare the voice quality of the students from these groups through perceptual auditory assessment and acoustic analysis. METHODS: Initially, 89 students from the pedagogy course answered a questionnaire about self-perceived voice quality and vocal complaints. In a second phase, auditory-perceptual evaluation and acoustic analyses of 48 participants were made through voice recordings of sustained vowel emission and poem reading. RESULTS: The most reported vocal complaints were fatigue while using the voice, sore throat, effort to speak, irritation or burning in the throat, hoarseness, tightness in the neck, and variations of voice throughout the day. There was a higher occurrence of complaints from graduates than from freshmen, with significant differences for four of the nine complaints. It was also possible to observe the relationship between vocal self-perception and complaints reported by these students. No significant differences were observed in the results of auditory-perceptual evaluation; however, some graduates had their voices evaluated with higher severity of deviation of normalcy. During acoustic analysis no difference was observed between groups. CONCLUSION: The increase in vocal demand by the graduates may have caused the greatest number and diversity of vocal complaints, and several of them are related to the self-assessment of voice quality. The auditory-perceptual evaluation and acoustic analysis showed no deviations in their voice.

OBJETIVOS: investigar a ocorrência do ceceio em fricativas produzidas por crianças com alterações oclusais e analisar a influência do contexto silábico da fricativa no julgamento auditivo do ceceio. M ÉTODO: estudo prospectivo, em que as gravações de 428 palavras, produzidas por 15 crianças (idade média de 5 anos e 1 mês) foram julgadas auditivamente por três fonoaudiólogos com experiência no julgamento de alterações de fala. As palavras utilizadas foram constituídas pelas consoantes fricativas não vozeadas, alveolar e pós-alveolar, inseridas em posição tônica, precedida das vogais [i, a, u]. Obteve-se concordância intra-juiz (quase perfeita) e inter-juiz (total, 100%) previamente à análise dos aspectos de interesse. RESULTADOS: embora presente na fala de todas as crianças, identificou-se ceceio em 25,23% do total das palavras. Houve aumento significante do ceceio para: (a) fricativa alveolar em ataque inicial, (b) fricativa alveolar em ataque inicial em relação à coda medial (p=0,001) e (c) fricativa alveolar em relação à fricativa pós- alveolar (p<0,001). Não se observou diminuição do ceceio em relação às vogais co-articuladas. CONCLUSÃO: a ocorrência do ceceio é dependente do contexto silábico, (com maior ocorrência na fricativa alveolar, em posição de ataque inicial), devendo o mesmo ser considerado para fins clínicos e de pesquisa sobre o ceceio.

PURPOSES: to investigate the occurrence of lisping during fricative sounds produced by children with malocclusal and to analyze the influence of the syllabic context of the fricative in the perceptual judgment of lisping. METHOD: this prospective study involved auditory perceptual identification of lisping by three experienced speech-language pathologists who judged 428 recorded words produced by 15 children (mean age of 5y1m). The words included alveolar and post-alveolar unvoiced fricative consonants, produced in initial word position followed by [i, a, u] vowels in the stressed position. Intra (almost perfect) and inter (total, 100%) judgments were obtained before analyzing the data. RESULTS: although all studied children presented lisping at least during one fricative production, it was identified in 25,23% of the recording analyzed words. A significant increase in lisping was observed for: (a) alveolar fricative in the initial word position (p <0.001), (b) alveolar fricative in the initial word position, in relation to the medial coda (p = 0.001) and (c) alveolar fricative in relation to post-alveolar fricative (p <0.001). There was no significant decrease in the lisping in relation to co-articulated vowels. CONCLUSION: the occurrence of lisping depends on the syllabic context (with more occurrence in alveolar fricative in initial word position), therefore, this context should be considered for clinical and research purposes.

A disfonia espasmódica (DE) é um distúrbio vocal caracterizado por voz tensa-estrangulada, com quebras de sonoridade e que compromete a comunicação do indivíduo. O objetivo deste estudo é apresentar uma revisão bibliográfica dos tratamentos médico e fonoaudiológico proposto para a DE no período entre 2006 e 2010. Os tratamentos descritos foram: injeção de toxina botulínica (TB), miectomia, neurectomia, denervação e reinervação laríngea seletiva adutora, tireoplastia, miotermia tiroaritenóidea com radiofrequência, injeção de lidocaína, homeopatia e tratamento fonoaudiológico (fonoterapia). O uso de injeção de TB mostrou resultados que indicaram a satisfação dos pacientes tratados, embora alguns dos artigos apontassem a necessidade de reaplicação da toxina frequentemente, como desvantagem. Os procedimentos cirúrgicos foram considerados duradouros e indicados para os pacientes que não quiseram se submeter às aplicações de TB. Tais estudos, no entanto, apresentaram contingência de pacientes restrita e os resultados foram baseados, na maioria das investigações, no julgamento dos próprios pacientes sobre a sua qualidade vocal. Os tratamentos, com uso de lidocaína e homeopatia, mostraram resultados positivos em relação à qualidade vocal dos pacientes e foram sugeridos como uma opção, também, para aqueles que não gostariam de ser submetidos ao tratamento cirúrgico ou à aplicação de TB. Os poucos estudos que reportam fonoterapia assinalaram bons resultados quando a mesma foi associada à injeção de TB, mostrando a escassez de informações nesta área. Futuras pesquisas envolvendo a fonoterapia no tratamento da DE são necessárias.

Spasmodic dysphonia (SD) is a voice disorder characterized by a strained-strangled voice, with sound breaks and has implications in one's communication. The purpose of this study is to present a bibliographic review of the speech therapy and medical treatment suggested for SD from 2006 to 2010. The speech therapy and medical treatments described are: botulinum toxin injection, myectomy, neurectomy, denervation and reinnervation selective laryngeal adductor, thyroplasty, radiofrequency thyroarytenoid myothermy, injection of lidocaine, homeopathy and speech therapy. The use of botulinum toxin injection showed results that indicated the satisfaction of the patients who were treated, although some of the articles presented the frequent need of reapplication of the toxin as a disadvantage. The surgical procedures were considered long-lasting and indicated to patients who didn't want to get botulinum toxin injections. The studies, however, presented a restricted contingency of patients, and the outcomes in many studies were based in the patient's own judgment on his/her voice quality. The treatments using lidocaine and homeopathy had positive results in relation to the voice quality of the patients and were suggested as an option for those who wouldn't like to undergo surgical treatment or have botulinum toxin injection. The few studies which discourse on voice therapy presented good results in association with botulinum toxin injection, showing the shortage of information in this field. A study on the literature review pointed out the need of developing researches to help us understand the neurological functioning in spasmodic dysphonia. Future study involving speech therapy in the treatment of ED is still necessary.

OBJETIVO: analisar medidas da dinâmica respiratória em participantes de grupos de terceira idade. MÉTODO: participaram 41 pessoas, 32 do sexo feminino e nove do masculino, idade média de 69,90 anos. A avaliação foi realizada por meio das medidas de tempos máximos de fonação (TMF) das vogais /a/, /i/, /u/, das consoantes /s/ e /z/ e contagem de números; relação s/z; medida de capacidade vital (CV) e cocientes fônicos simples (CFS) e composto (CFC). RESULTADOS: os valores médios dos indivíduos do sexo masculino para os TMF das vogais, consoantes e contagem de números foram respectivamente, 18,11s; 19,22s; 19,11s; 15,22s e 15,61s e 18,77s, sendo 0,98 o valor da relação s/z. No sexo feminino, as médias das mesmas medidas de TMF foram respectivamente 13,94s; 14,19s; 13,98s; 10,11s e 11,63s; 13,90s, sendo 0,92 a relação s/z. A média de TMF das vogais foi significativamente maior que a média das consoantes no grupo feminino. O valor médio da CV sem oclusão nasal no sexo feminino foi de 2.247ml e no masculino de 3.211 ml. Foi verificada relação significante entre a medida de CV e a variável idade, no grupo feminino. Os valores médios do CFS nos grupos de homens e mulheres foram respectivamente 182,11 ml/s e 176,58 ml/s e do CFC, 184,35 ml/s e 186,93 ml/s. CONCLUSÃO: as medidas da dinâmica respiratória dos participantes estiveram próximas aos valores de referência para adultos na literatura, bem como próximos aos de estudos de idosos, havendo diferenças para mais ou para menos nas diferentes medidas estudadas.

PURPOSE: to analyze the measures of respiratory dynamics in elderly citizens taking part in elderly groups. METHOD: we studied 41 participants, 32 female and nine male, mean age of 69.90 years. The evaluation included measures of the maximum phonation time (MPT) of vowels /a/, /i/, /u/, consonants /s/ and /z/, and counting numbers; s/z ratio; value of Vital Capacity (VC), Simple Phonic Quotient (SPQ) and Composed Phonic Quotient (CPQ). RESULTS: the mean values of MPT, for males, of vowels, consonants and counting numbers were respectively 18.11s; 19.22s; 19.11s; 15.22s and 15.61s and 18.77s, and the s/z ratio was 0.98. For females, the means for the same measures of TMF were respectively 13.94s; 14.19s; 13.98s; 10.11s and 11.63s; 13.90 s and 0.92 to the s/z ratio. The mean time of vowels emission was significantly higher than the mean value for the consonants in the female group. The mean value of VC without nasal occlusion was 2.247ml for females and 3.211ml for males. Significant relation between the VC and age was observed in the female group. The mean values of SPQ found for the male and female groups were, respectively, 182.11 ml/s e 176.58 ml/s. The mean values of CPQ were 184.35 ml/s for the males and 186.93 ml/s for the females. CONCLUSION: measures of respiratory dynamics concerning the participants were close to the reference values in literature for adults as well as close to those of older studies, and differences were a little more or less than the different studied measures.

TEMA: medidas da dinâmica respiratória são freqüentemente utilizadas na clínica fonoaudiológica, mas poucos são os dados científicos destas na população infantil. OBJETIVO: estudar a dinâmica respiratória entre crianças que respiram pelo modo nasal. MÉTODO: o estudo foi realizado com uma amostra aleatória estratificada de 106 crianças respiradoras nasais de escolas da cidade de Marília / SP, entre quatro e dez anos de ambos os sexos. Foram realizadas as medidas de capacidade vital (CV), nas posições em pé e sentada, com e sem oclusão nasal; de tempo máximo de fonação (TMF) de vogais e consoantes sustentadas, além de fala em seqüência com a contagem de números. RESULTADOS: a medida média da CV na posição em pé com e sem oclusão nasal foi 1515,56 ml e 1538,67 ml respectivamente e na posição sentada, 1524 ml e 1539,15 ml respectivamente; o TMF das vogais em segundos foi: /a/ = 8,32 , /i/ = 8,61 e /u/ 8,42; o de consoantes foi: /s/ = 6,64 e /z/ = 7,65 e o de seqüência de números foi de 7,76 segundos. Resultados: observou-se que o tempo médio destas medidas aumentou progressivamente conforme as faixas etárias. Tanto para o TMF das vogais como, para o das consoantes, houve diferença estatística significante (p < 0,05) nas idades mais distantes, ou seja, entre quatro e dez anos, quatro e nove, e quatro e oito anos. Em faixas etárias consecutivas não houve diferença estatística significante nos valores de CV. Houve forte associação entre a CV e o crescimento físico da criança. CONCLUSÃO: esse estudo mostrou medidas de dinâmica respiratória em crianças que podem ser úteis no diagnóstico e terapia fonoaudiológica. Outras pesquisas deveriam ser desenvolvidas para adicionais informações sobre o assunto.

BACKGROUND: respiratory dynamics measurements are frequently used in the speech-language pathology practice, but few are the scientific data for children. AIM: to study the respiratory dynamics in children with nasal breathing. METHOD: the study was performed with a stratified random sample of 106 nasal breathing children, male and female, from schools of the city of Marília-SP, with ages between four and ten years. The following measurements were obtained: vital capacity (VC) in both standing and sitting positions, with and without nasal occlusion; maximum phonation time (MPT) of sustained vowels and consonants and also of speech when counting numbers. RESULTS: the mean values for VC in the standing position with and without nasal occlusion were of 1515.56ml and 1538.67ml respectively and for the sitting position of 1524ml and 1539.15ml respectively. MPT of vowels in seconds were: /a/ = 8.32, /i/ = 8.61 and /u/ = 8.42; of consonants: /s/ = 6.64 and /z/ = 7.65; and when counting numbers: 7.76. It was observed that the mean values of these measurements progressively increased according to age. There was a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) not only for the MPT of vowels but also for the MPT of consonants in older children, i.e. between 4 and 10 year olds, 4 and 9 year olds and 4 and 8 year olds. There was no significant statistical difference for the VC values in consecutive age groups. There was a strong association between VC and the child's physical development. CONCLUSION: this study presented respiratory dynamics measurements in children that can be used for the speech-language diagnosis and therapy. Other studies should be developed in order to bring additional information on the subject.
