ABSTRACT The discursive system of Periodicity, proposed by Martin (1992) and by Martin and Rose (2007) towards the analysis of discourse flow is based upon systemic functional linguistics (Halliday, 1967, 1985; Halliday; Matthiessen 2004, 2014). More precisely upon Hallidayan concepts of Theme and New information (New), in addition to concepts of thematic progression and hyperTheme (Daneš 1974) as well as texts’ methods of development and point (Fries 1981; 1995). In this study we analyze how information flows in an argumentative text to verify the relationship between different levels Themes (hyperTheme and macroThemes) and the method of development as well as their relationship with text genre and the expression of a point of view. We also looked at the relationship between New clauses and macroTheme, which focuses on the expansion of ideational meaning around the field of the text and coincides with the Reiteration of the thesis stage. Results show a simple method of development marked by a Periodicity hierarchy in which smaller discourse units are structured within greater units.

RESUMO O sistema discursivo de Periodicidade proposto por Martin (1992) e Martin e Rose (2007) para a análise do fluxo discursivo em textos é fundamentado na Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional (Halliday 1967, 1985, 1994; Halliday & Matthiessen 2004, 2014), mais precisamente nos conceitos hallidayanos de Tema e de Informação Nova (Novo), além dos conceitos de progressão temática e de hiperema (Daneš 1974) e de método de desenvolvimento textual e ponto (Fries 1981; 1995). Neste artigo, analisamos como ocorre o fluxo de informação em um texto argumentativo, verificando a relação dos Temas em diferentes níveis (hiperTemas e macroTemas) com o método de desenvolvimento e sua relação com o gênero de texto exposição de um ponto de vista. Também averiguamos a relação dos Novos oracionais com o macroNovo, o qual foca na expansão dos significados ideacionais em torno do campo do texto e coincide com a etapa de Reiteração da tese. Constatamos, no texto analisado, um método de desenvolvimento simples, com uma hierarquia de periodicidade em que unidades menores do discurso se estruturam dentro de unidades maiores.

RESUMO Ao ler ou ouvir uma história ou uma estória, é natural a associação de sua organização textual à narrativa no contexto brasileiro. Entretanto, se levadas em conta determinadas características linguísticas que evidenciam o propósito sociocomunicativo e as etapas de gênero dos textos, nem sempre histórias ou estórias são contadas fazendo uso da narrativa. Para evidenciar isso, neste estudo, objetivamos apresentar características linguísticas que instanciam outros gêneros de texto usados para envolver ouvintes ou leitores, encontrados em livros didáticos de língua portuguesa. Tendo em vista a abordagem de gênero da Escola de Sydney (MARTIN e ROSE, 2008), utilizamos princípios da Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional (LSF), com foco no sistema léxico-gramatical de transitividade (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2004, 2014) e no subsistema de Atitude do sistema semântico-discursivo de Avaliatividade, (MARTIN; WHITE, 2005). Para análise, foram selecionados, nos livros didáticos “Português Linguagens” (CEREJA; MAGALHÃES, 2012) e “Projeto Teláris - Português” (BERTIN; BORGATO; MARCHEZI, 2012), 21 textos com potencial para instanciar os gêneros exemplum e episódio, tendo em vista propósitos sociocomunicativos específicos, a estrutura esquemática e características linguísticas típicas de cada gênero de texto. A análise dos componentes oracionais da transitividade e das ocorrências de avaliações de Atitude em cada texto evidenciou 8 instanciações de exemplum e 13 de episódio. Nas instanciações de ambos os gêneros, foram identificadas orações materiais e relacionais para introduzir personagens nas fases cenário e descrição, as quais constituem a etapa Orientação. As diferenças situam-se no modo como o problema é respondido nas etapas: com Reação no episódio e Interpretação no exemplum. Além disso, para cumprir o propósito de cada gênero, as instanciações de exemplum apresentam mais avaliações de julgamento, enquanto as de episódio apresentam avaliações de afeto.

ABSTRACT When reading or listening to or a history or a story, it is natural to associate its textual organization with narrative in Brazilian context. However, if one takes into account certain linguistic characteristics that show the socio-communicative purpose and the genres stages, stories and histories are not always told using narrative. In order to demonstrate these aspects, in this study, we aim to present linguistic characteristics that instantiate other genres of text used to engaging listeners or readers in Portuguese language textbooks. Based on the Sydney School genre approach (MARTIN and ROSE, 2008), we use the principles of Systemic-Functional Linguistics (SFL), focusing on the lexical-grammatical system of transitivity (HALLIDAY and MATTHIESSEN, 2004, 2014) and on the Attitude subsystem of the semantic-discursive system of Appraisal (MARTIN and WHITE, 2005). For the analysis, 21 texts with the potential to instantiate the exemplum and anecdote genres were selected in the Portuguese textbooks Português Linguagens (CEREJA; MAGALHÃES, 2012) and Projeto Teláris - Português (BERTIN; BORGATO; MARCHEZI, 2012), considering their specific sociocommunication purposes, their schematic structure and typical language characteristics of each genre. The analysis of the transitivity components and the attitude occurrences in each text showed 8 instances of exemplum and 13 anecdotes. In the instantiations of both genres, material and relational clauses were identified to introduce characters into the scenario and description phases, which constitute the Orientation stage. The differences lie in the way the problem is answered in the steps: with Reaction in the anecdote and Interpretation in the exemplum. In addition, to fulfill the purpose of each genre, exemplum instantiations present more judgments, while those of anecdote have evaluations of affect.

RESUMO A multimodalidade, característica dos textos que reúnem dois ou mais códigos sígnicos (KRESS; van LEEUWEN, 2006) requer um enfoque que enfatize a verbo-visualidade (BRAIT, 2013) dessas composições. O objetivo deste estudo é analisar categorias da metafunção composicional (KRESS; van LEEUWEN, 2006) pela perspectiva da multimodalidade em infográficos da esfera publicitária, com a finalidade de compreender como se organizam as mensagens selecionadas que se configuram em infográficos. Para tanto, pretende-se: caracterizar os infográficos selecionados com base em categorias da metafunção composicional; compreender como os aspectos multimodais se relacionam aos aspectos funcionais nesses textos; averiguar como atuam os aspectos multimodais na produção dos sentidos. A amostra foi composta por cinco infográficos da área da publicidade selecionados a partir do site Pinterest. A análise multimodal dos textos será realizada a partir de categorias da metafunção composicional, da Gramática do Design Visual (KRESS; van LEEUWEN, 2006). A análise demonstra que não há somente um foco visual, mas um número variável de elementos multimodais que, com seus diferentes tamanhos, cores e funções comunicativas, contribuem para a criação de diferentes graus de saliência.

ABSTRACT Multimodality, which is characteristic of texts that gather two or more semiotic codes (KRESS; van LEEUWEN, 2006), requires an approach that emphasizes the verbal-visuality (BRAIT, 2013) of these compositions. The aim of this study is to analyze categories of the compositional metafunction (KRESS; van LEEUWEN, 2006) from the perspective of multimodality in infographics of the advertising sphere, with the purpose of understanding how the selected messages, configured in infographics, are organized. In order to do so, it is necessary to: (i) characterize the selected infographics based on categories of the compositional metafunction; (ii) understand how the multimodal and functional aspects relate to each other in these texts; (iii) investigate how the multimodal aspects act in the production of meaning. The sample consisted of five infographics from the advertising area selected from the Pinterest website. The multimodal analysis of the texts is carried out from categories of the compositional metafunction, from the Grammar of Visual Design (KRESS; van LEEUWEN, 2006). The analysis shows that there is not only a visual focus but also a variable number of multimodal elements that, with their different sizes, colors, and communicative functions, contribute to the creation of various degrees of salience. Reading is done from the signifiers that stand out the most in the ad pieces, thus producing meanings.

RESUMO Neste artigo, objetiva-se delinear um percurso de leitura guiado por aspectos relevantes da teoria sistêmico-funcional que revelem a instanciação de gêneros da família das estórias. Focalizam-se as noções de estratificação, realização e instanciação da linguagem para esclarecer a noção de gênero na Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional e analisar realizações linguísticas que evidenciam o propósito sociocomunicativo e a estrutura esquemática de gênero numa amostra de textos socialmente designados como fábulas, muito frequentes no contexto escolar brasileiro.

ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to draft a reading path oriented by relevant aspects of systemic functional theory which reveal the instantiation of genres of the story family. We focus on the notions of language stratification, realization and instantiation to explain the notion of genre in Systemic-Functional Linguistics and to analyze the linguistic realizations that demonstrate the socio-communicative purpose and the schematic structure of genre within a sample of texts socially recognised as fables, frequently used in the Brazilian school context.

O objetivo deste trabalho é analisar, com base em ocorrências léxico-gramaticais e semântico-discursivas, representações construídas em artigos de opinião publicados em jornais brasileiros. Foram verificadas as funções léxico-gramaticais desempenhadas pelos atores sociais selecionados a partir da recorrência no corpus, bem como as marcas de avaliação para as representações identificadas. Para isso, foram utilizados pressupostos teóricos da Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional, combinando categorias do sistema de transitividade de Halliday e Matthiessen (2004), das formas de representação de atores sociais de Van Leeuwen (1997) e do sistema de avaliatividade de Martin e White (2005). Os resultados mostram que os atores sociais mais frequentes no discurso são o próprio articulista, o reality show, os participantes do programa e os telespectadores. Eles aparecem ora ativados, ora passivados, dependendo do contexto linguístico a que se relacionam. A presença de marcas linguísticas de julgamento e apreciação, muitas vezes acompanhadas de gradação, evidencia avaliações negativas para o reality show e seus agentes, ao passo que o uso de marcas de afeto sinaliza uma defesa dos participantes por parte da voz autoral. Assim como os brothers, telespectadores brasileiros são representados como vítimas do sistema capitalista vigente, que se faz presente nas dinâmicas dos reality shows.

The aim of this study is to analyze the representations constructed in opinion articles published in Brazilian newspapers from the lexicogrammar and semantic-discursive perspective. We have analyzed the lexicogrammar functions played by social actors selected from their recurrence in the corpus and evaluation marks to the representations identified. For this, we used the Systemic Functional Linguistics theory, focusing on categories of transitivity system by Halliday & Matthiessen (2004), forms of representation of social actors by van Leeuwen (1997) and the Appraisal by Martin & White (2005). The results show that the social actors that are most frequently present in the discourse are the opinion article writers, the reality show, the participants of the program and the audience. They appear sometimes activated, sometimes passivated, depending on the linguistic context to which they relate. The presence of linguistic traces of trial judgment and appreciation, often accompanied by gradation, indicates the negative valuations for the reality shows and their agents, while the use of marks of affection signals a defense of participants by the authorial voice. Like the participants of the program, the Brazilian audience is represented as a victim of the current Capitalist system, which is present in the dynamics of reality shows.

Partindo do conceito de leitura como um processo que permite ao leitor colocar em relação um discurso com discursos prévios, este trabalho busca ilustrar como a análise subsidiada por categorias propostas pela teoria sistêmicofuncional permite descortinar significados muitas vezes naturalizados como senso comum pela linguagem em textos de diferentes gêneros, podendo ser utilizada pedagogicamente para a formação de leitores críticos em sala de aula. Nessa perspectiva, analisamos significados construídos em uma peça publicitária e sua repercussão em notícias publicadas em jornais on-line da imprensa brasileira durante o carnaval de 2011. Nas notícias, a análise de elementos ideacionais demonstrou uma contradição de representações que se projetam aos consumidores desse produto: libertinos ou descontraídos. A análise dos recursos de modalidade demonstrou preferência pelas proposições epistêmicas especulativas e evidenciais reportadas, que contribuem para agregar confiabilidade às declarações. A análise da peça publicitária indicou que a campanha foi articulada no sentido de atingir um grupo heterogêneo de consumidores, que se identificam com diferentes papéis. Desse modo, verifica-se que diferentes identidades profissionais podem conviver sem que uma identidade anule ou negue a outra.

Taking into account the concept of reading as a process that allows the reader to relate a particular discourse with previous ones, this article illustrates how an analysis, subsidized by systemic functional categories, can reveal meanings that might be naturalized as common sense in texts belonging to different genres. This effort of analysis can be used pedagogically to educate critical readers in the classroom. Within this perspective, we analyze the meanings built in an advertising billboard and its repercussion in news articles published in Brazilian online newspapers during the 2011Carnival Festival. In these news articles, the analysis of the ideational elements demonstrates a contradiction of representations which project two views to consumers: libertine or laid-back. The modality analysis indicates the preference for speculative epistemic propositions which contribute to give confidence to the assertions. The analysis of the billboard demonstrates that the advertising campaign was articulated to reach a heterogenic group of consumers, exploring the fact that in contemporary society we assume - and identify ourselves - with different roles. As a result, it is possible to verify that different professional identities can coexist, without having one denying the other.

O presente trabalho, vinculado ao projeto SAL, apresenta um estudo da realização de processos verbais em língua portuguesa do Brasil em textos da área de Engenharia Civil. O objetivo é analisar quais formas linguísticas realizam processos verbais, com que frequência são usados e que significados produzem em textos científicos dessa área. O corpus de análise constitui-se de 51 textos que compõem os volumes 1 e 2 do livro "Concreto: ciência e tecnologia", publicada pelo IBRACON (Instituto Brasileiro do Concreto). Para a compilação do corpus, seguiram-se princípios da Linguística de Corpus (Sardinha, 2004; Almeida & Correia, 2008). A identificação das formas linguísticas e o tratamento quantitativo dos dados foram realizados com auxílio das ferramentas WordListe Concord do WordSmith Tools (SCOTT, 2008). A análise das formas linguísticas foi realizada com base nos critérios da Gramática Sistêmico-Funcional (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004) para descrição e classificação de processos verbais. Os resultados apontam que os verbos mais frequentes do corpus, recomendar e especificar, funcionam como processos de semiose do tipo comando e podem ser consideradas características do discurso científico na área de Engenharia Civil.Formas linguísticas em terceira pessoa do presente e no particípio servem como recurso de impessoalização no discurso científico.

This paper, linked to the SAL project, presents a study on the realization of verbal processes in Brazilian Portuguese in Civil Engineering texts. Its aim is to analyse the linguistic forms that realize verbal processes, how often they are used and what meanings they produce in texts in that field. The corpus consists of the 51 texts in the 2 volumes of the book Concreto: ciência e tecnologia, published by IBRACON (InstitutoBrasileiro do Concreto). To compile the corpus we followed the principles of Corpus Linguistics (Sardinha, 2004; Almeida & Correia, 2008). The identification of the linguistic forms and the quantitative treatment of the data were done with the help of WordList and Concord from WordSmith Tools (Scott, 2008). The analysis of the linguistic forms was based on the criteria of Systemic Functional Grammar (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004) to describe and classify verbal processes. The results show that the most frequent verbs in the corpus, recommend and specify, work as processes of semiosis of the group command and may be considered characteristics of the scientific discourse in Civil Engineering. Linguistic forms in the third person in the present and in the participle work as a resource for impersonality in the scientific discourse.

O propósito deste trabalho é descrever a constituição de um processo penal sob a ótica da linguagem como prática social, com ênfase no campo das práticas sociais do/no trabalho. A descrição é realizada com base nas noções de gênero discursivo, conjunto de gêneros, sistema de gêneros e sistema de atividades, discutidas por Bazerman (2004). Na análise, foram consideradas as convenções para os procedimentos processuais no contexto brasileiro, encontradas em lei, e a um corpus de referência, qual seja: os autos-findos de um PROCESSO PENAL da 1ª Vara Criminal e do Tribunal do Júri de Santa Maria-RS. Procurou-se identificar os sujeitos processuais e seus papéis nos gêneros de que participam, com ênfase nas atividades realizadas mediante textos escritos. Foi constatado que o complexo sistema de gêneros em que se constituem os autos de um processo penal funciona como um dos mecanismos que mantém o caráter altamente especializado das atividades realizadas pelos representantes da instituição jurídica.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the constitution of a penal process from the perspective of language as a social practice, with emphasis on the field of the social practices of/at work. The description is based on the concepts of genre, genre sets, genre systems and activity systems, discussed by Bazerman (2004). The analysis includes the conventions for legal procedures in the Brazilian context, found in the legislation, and a corpus of reference, i.e., the complete records of a penal process from the First Criminal Court of Santa Maria-RS. We investigated the legal subjects and their roles in the genres they participate of, with emphasis on the activities performed through written texts. Results indicate that the complex genre system which constitutes the records of a penal process functions as one of the mechanisms that maintain the highly specialized character of the activities conducted by members of the legal establishment.

El propósito de este trabajo es describir la constitución de un proceso penal bajo la óptica del lenguaje como práctica social, con énfasis en el campo de las prácticas sociales del/en el trabajo. La descripción es realizada con base en las nociones de género discursivo, conjunto de géneros, sistema de géneros y sistema de actividades, discutidas por Bazerman (2004). En el análisis, fueron consideradas las convenciones para los procedimientos procesales en el contexto brasileño, encontradas en ley, y a un corpus de referencia, cual sea: los autos-terminados de un PROCESO PENAL de la 1ª Vara Criminal y del Tribunal del Jurado de Santa Maria-RS. Se buscó identificar a los sujetos procesales y sus papeles en los géneros de que participan, con énfasis en las actividades realizadas mediante textos escritos. Fue constatado que el complejo sistema de géneros en que se constituyen los autos de un proceso penal funciona como uno de los mecanismos que mantienen el carácter altamente especializado de las actividades realizadas por los representantes de la institución jurídica.

La proposition de ce travail est celle de décrire la constitution d'un procès pénal sous l'optique du langage comme pratique sociale, avec emphase dans le domaine des pratiques sociales du/dans le travail. La description est faite ayant comme base les notions de genre discursif, de l'ensemble de genres, du système de genres et du système d'activités, discutées par Bazerman (2004). Dans l'analyse, les conventions pour les procédés des procès dans le contexte brésilien furent considérées, rencontrées dans la loi, bien qu'un corpus de référence, tel que: les procès-verbaux finis d'un PROCÈS PÉNAL de la 1ère Chambre Criminelle et du Tribunal du Jury de Santa Maria - RS. On a cherché à identifier les sujets de procédure et leurs rôles dans les genres auxquels ils en prennent part, avec emphase dans les activités réalisées au moyen de textes écrits. On a constaté que le complexe système de genres dans lesquels sont constitués les procès-verbaux pénaux marche comme l'un des mécanismes qui maintiennent le caractère trop spécialisé des activités faites par les représentants de l'institution juridique.
