Abstract The physical and chemical protection of steel reinforcement afforded by the cover is a consequence of the quality of the concrete and its thickness, with a long-term impact on durability and service life. This study proposed variations in cover based on environmental aggressivity class (EAC) of exposure considering concretes of prescribed compressive strength classes (C20/C25/C30/C40). To this end, concrete mixtures were subjected to accelerated testing in salt spray chambers or carbonation. Accelerated testing was kept for periods long enough to reach each EAC cover level. Thus, the effect of each EAC, from mild to severe, was determined on the physical and mechanical characteristics of each mixture. It was determined that the required reinforcement cover varied linearly with compressive strength. This denoted the possibility of using more than one class of concrete and cover for each EAC. It should be noted that the difference in required cover became greater when using concrete with a strength class higher than C30. Resumo O cobrimento das armaduras tem a função de proteger física e quimicamente as armaduras de aço, através da qualidade do concreto e sua espessura, influenciando na durabilidade e vida útil. Este trabalho propôs variações do cobrimento baseados na classe de agressividade ambiental (CAA) de exposição dos concretos, considerando a resistência especificada em cada classe. Os traços foram submetidos aos ensaios acelerados de névoa salina e de carbonatação. Os testes foram mantidos por períodos até que o cobrimento de cada CAA fosse atingido, determinando o impacto no cobrimento das armaduras para cada CAA, mais amena ou mais severa. Cada um destes traços foi avaliado quanto às características físicas e mecânicas. Verificou-se que o cobrimento necessário às armaduras varia de maneira linear com a resistência à compressão dos traços, denotando a possibilidade de considerar mais de uma classe de resistência de concreto e o cobrimento nas diferentes CAA. resumo: Investigar o comportamento de compósitos cimentícios autocicatrizantes é necessário para conhecer alternativas que possam ser aplicadas em estruturas aumentando a sua vida útil. Portanto, este estudo avaliou a cicatrização do concreto a partir do uso de cápsulas de perlita expandida (PE) e argila expandida (AE) impregnadas com solução de metassilicato de sódio. Esses materiais foram utilizados em substituição aos agregados naturais no concreto nas proporções de 0%, 15% e 30% em relação à massa. Os exemplares foram curados em ambientes úmidos ou submersos. A fissura foi induzida pelo teste de flexão e a cicatrização foi avaliada visualmente e medida por meio de software. Testes de absorção capilar indicaram redução da porosidade das amostras que incorporaram materiais autocurantes, sendo esta uma importante propriedade relacionada à durabilidade do conjunto. As amostras com PE alcançaram 100% de cicatrização com 15% de substituição. O preenchimento da fissura foi obtido em fissuras de até 0,43 mm de largura. Amostras com AE alcançaram 50% de recuperação de fissura sob cura úmida e 90% sob cura submersa. Conclui-se que incorporar a solução de metassilicato de sódio proporcionou melhorias consideráveis na selagem de fissuras e esta solução torna-se uma alternativa eficiente para concretos autocicatrizantes a serem produzidos no Brasil. A incorporação de PE foi mais eficaz do que o AE como material encapsulante. Além disso, o uso de PE não impactou na resistência à compressão em decorrência de sua reduzida dimensão de partícula e empacotamento. Ainda, a EP apresentou maior percentual de cicatrização comparando-se com as amostras contendo AE.

abstract: Investigating the behavior of self-healing cementitious composites is necessary to know alternatives that can be applied in structures increasing their life service. Therefore, this study evaluated concrete self-he aling from the use of expanded perlite (EP) and expanded clay (EC) capsules impregnated with a sodium metasilicate solution. These materials were used to substitute natural aggregates in concrete in proportions of 0 wt·%, 15 wt·% and 30 wt·% which were cured in humid or submerged environments. Cracking was induced with a flexural test and a closing with cicatrization product. was evaluated and measured visually with a software. Capillary absorption tests indicated a reduction in the porosity of samples which incorporated self-healing materials, considering it as an important property related to durability. Samples with EP achieved 100% self-healing with 15% substitution. Crack filling was achieved in cracks up to 0.43 mm wide. Samples with EC achieved 50% crack recovery under humid curing and 90% under submerged curing. It was concluded that incorporating the sodium silicate allowed improvements to fissure sealing and it is an alternative to produce self-healing concrete in Brazil. EP was more effective than EC as encapsulating material. Despite that, the EP did not impact the compressive strength due to its small size and better packing of the mixture, Also, EP presented higher healing percentage when comparing with samples containing EC.

ABSTRACT The use of polymeric compounds is limited to sealing masonry in Brazil, due to the criteria of the NBR 16590 [1]. However, one must evaluate how much this material can contribute when applied to structural masonry. Thus, this study investigated the operation of a type of polymeric compound when applied in structural masonry, performing chemical and physical characterization tests and adhesion at the interface between block and binder. Besides these, we investigated the axial compressive strength of full-scale walls was investigated. One sample was made with horizontal joints filled with cementitious mortar and two containing polymeric compound, with 2 and 4 fillets for settlement the blocks. The characterization results of the binder material and interface showed that the polymeric compound has greater resilience and better adherence performance when compared to cementitious mortar. RESUMO O uso dos compostos poliméricos se limita às alvenarias de vedação no Brasil, devido aos critérios da NBR 16590 [1]. No entanto, deve-se avaliar o quanto este material pode contribuir quando aplicado em alvenarias estruturais. Sendo assim, esse estudo investigou o funcionamento de um tipo de composto polimérico, quando aplicado em alvenarias estruturais, realizando ensaios de caracterização química e física do material e de aderência na interface entre bloco e o ligante. Além dessas, foram investigadas a resistência à compressão axial de paredes em escala real, sendo uma amostra executada com as juntas horizontais preenchidas por argamassa cimentícia e outras duas contendo composto polimérico, com 2 e 4 filetes para assentamento dos blocos. Os resultados de caracterização do material ligante e interface mostraram que o composto polimérico possui maior resiliência e melhor desempenho à aderência, quando comparado à argamassa cimentícia. ABSTRACT The physical and mechanical properties of ceramic blocks are affected by the firing process of the primary raw material, in this case, clay or clay minerals. Consequently, this study sought to characterize different types of silty clays for ceramic block production and determine the effect of firing time and mineral content on their mechanical and physical properties. Characterization was conducted in two stages: pre and post-firing. ABSTRACT This paper verified the structural behavior of three configurations of composite beams of wood and steel profiles, analytically by the mixed section homogenization method (MHSM), by experimental tests and simulated by the finite element method (FEM). Unreinforced wooden beam (V-SR), with bent steel sheet profiles fixed with stud (V-PRI) and self-tapping (V-AUT) screws were analyzed. The flexural behavior was analyzed by 3 points of these elements, represented by the load and displacement. It was found that the beam failure form was the same in all configurations, occurring in the tensioned part, without lateral buckling of the steel profiles or plastic deformation of the screws. It was noted that the insertion of steel profiles caused an increase in the strength of the composite beams, being 100% in the V-PRI sample and 32% in the V-AUT. The FEM simulations showed values closer to the bending behavior of the V-SR and V-PRI beams in the elastic regime (ELS). RESUMO Este artigo verificou o comportamento estrutural à flexão de três configurações de vigas mistas de madeira e perfis de aço, por meio do método de homogeneização da seção mista, ensaios experimentais e simulação computacional. Foram analisadas viga de madeira sem reforço (V-SR), com perfis de chapa de aço dobrada fixada com parafuso tipo prisioneiro (V-PRI) e autoatarraxante (V-AUT). Foram realizados ensaios de flexão por 3 pontos, obtendo a força de ruptura e deslocamentos. Verificou-se que a forma ruptura das vigas foi similar em todas as configurações, ocorrendo na parte tracionada, sem apresentar flambagem lateral dos perfis de aço ou deformação plástica dos parafusos. Notou-se que a inserção dos perfis de aço ocasionou um aumento na resistência das vigas mistas, sendo de 100% nas vigas com perfis de chapa de aço dobrada fixada com parafuso tipo prisioneiro (V-PRI) e de 32% nas vigas com perfis de chapa de aço dobrada fixada com parafuso tipo autoatarraxante (V-AUT). Resumo Soluções bacterianas têm sido estudadas para promover a autocura de matrizes cimentícias, entretanto, a concentração dessas soluções variou entre os estudos. Consequentemente, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o potencial de autocura de diferentes concentrações de Bacillus subtilis AP91 encapsulado em perlita expandida (PE). O exame visual e a absorção capilar de água foram medidos ao longo do tempo. As amostras de teste também foram submetidas a testes de resistência de força. Foram avaliadas as propriedades físico-químicas do EP e sua distribuição na matriz. Não houve tendência observada no efeito da concentração da solução na largura da fissura cicatrizada. No entanto, a concentração afetou a quantidade e o comprimento das fissuras cicatrizadas. A absorção capilar diminuiu conforme as fissuras foram curadas, enquanto nenhuma mudança significativa foi medida na resistência da força, independentemente da concentração. Os resultados indicaram que a EP proporcionou encapsulamento adequado à solução bacteriana e que há uma distribuição adequada das cápsulas na matriz cimentícia.

Abstract Bacterial solutions have been studied to promote self-healing of cementitious matrices, however, the concentration of this solutions varied between studies. Consequently, the objective of this study was to evaluate the self-healing potential of different concentrations of Bacillus subtilis AP91 encapsulated in expanded perlite (EP). Visual examination and capillary absorption of water was measured over time. Test samples were also subjected to strength resistance tests. The physiochemical properties of EP and his distribution on the matrix was evaluated. There was no observable trend in the effect of solution concentration on the width of crack healed. However, concentration affected the quantity and length of the fissures healed. Capillary absorption decreased as fissures were healed while no significant changes were measured in strength resistance regardless of the concentration. Results indicated that EP provided suitable encapsulation to the bacterial solution and there is an adequate distribution of the capsules in the cementitious matrix.

Resumo Neste artigo, foi avaliada experimentalmente a influência do diâmetro de barras no grau de redução da resistência ao escoamento (fy) e de ruptura (fu) de armaduras extraídas de quatro pilares expostos à ação térmica em um forno vertical, pela curva padrão de aquecimento da ISO 834-1:1999, por 240 min. Os pilares tinham seção transversal de 25 cm x 25 cm e altura de 300 cm. Os diâmetros analisados foram de 10 mm e 16 mm, e a espessura de cobrimento, de 25 mm a 50 mm. Os resultados mostraram que, independentemente da espessura de cobrimento, as barras com 16 mm de diâmetro sofreram maior redução na resistência de escoamento (fy) e na resistência última (fu) em relação às barras de 10 mm de diâmetro, devido ao maior volume de desplacamento do concreto dos pilares, com exposição direta às temperaturas elevadas. Os maiores volumes de desplacamento foram identificados nos elementos com maior espessura de cobrimento (50 mm), atingindo valores até 52 vezes maiores que os desplacamentos identificados nos elementos com espessura de 25 mm no cobrimento. As tensões fy das armaduras obtiveram redução entre 29% e 56%. Assim, com base neste estudo, mostra-se relevante prever a redução do fy e do fu das armaduras no dimensionamento das estruturas de concreto armado em situação de incêndio.

Abstract This paper presents results obtained in tensile tests performed in steel reinforcing bars with different diameters extracted from columns exposed for 240 minutes to the standard fire curve prescribed by ISO 834-1:1999. The square columns were 300 cm long and had a width of 25 mm. The longitudinal reinforcement consisted of 10 mm and 16 mm-diameter steel bars with a concrete cover thickness of 25, 30, 40, and 50 mm. Results showed that 16 mm-diameter bars presented lower yield (fy) and ultimate (fu) stress due to the larger spalled areas of concrete in those columns, which increased its exposure to elevated temperatures. Columns with higher concrete cover thickness (50 mm) presented larger volume of concrete spalling and were accounted to be 52 times higher than elements with cover thickness of 25 mm. It was verified that the residual yield stress was 29-56% lower than the original yield strength, highlighting the the need of a proper post-fire assessment of this type of structure after exposure to fire.

RESUMO O método da maturidade é um procedimento que associa a evolução da temperatura do concreto e o avanço de suas propriedades no estado endurecido, como a resistência à compressão, geralmente em idades iniciais. Sua aplicação é justificada quando se requer segurança e agilidade para tarefas de construção, como a protensão, a remoção do escoramento, o desmolde e a cura de concreto em baixas temperaturas. As regiões de clima temperado são conhecidas por apresentar temperaturas mais baixas durante o inverno, o que pode retardar o ganho de resistência do concreto. Este estudo aplicou o método de maturidade em uma estrutura de concreto armado localizada no Sul do Brasil, em uma construção industrial. Se observou que o concreto, do qual se esperava o alcance de 30 MPa aos 28 dias, chegou a alcançar 70% da resistência com 8,5 dias para a laje 1 e em 4,4 dias para a laje 2, sendo possível mensurar tal propriedade utilizando o método da maturidade.

ABSTRACT The maturity method is a procedure that associates the evolution of the temperature of concrete cast to the structure and the evolution of its hardened state properties like compressive strength, usually at early ages. Its use is justified when safety and agility are required for activities like prestressing, shoring removal, demolding and low temperature concrete curing analysis. Temperate regions are known for having lower temperatures during the winter, which can delay concrete strength gains. The aim of this study was to apply the maturity method to a reinforced concrete structure located in Southern Brazil in industrial construction. It was noted that the concrete, despite being expected to reach 30 MPa at 28 days, managed to reach 70% of the strength at 8.5 days for slab 1. Slab 2, whose function was to support garners 4, 5 and 6, presented the data at 4.4 days, it being possible to measure such property using the maturity method.

RESUMO A falta de controle com relação à geração de resíduos é um problema ainda enfrentado pela indústria da construção civil, enquanto seus coprodutos podem reutilizados na produção de novos compósitos cimentícios, mantendo a qualidade, o desempenho e a sustentabilidade das estruturas. Este estudo desenvolveu grautesestruturais com substituição do agregado natural por resíduos de blocos cerâmicos triturados, avaliando seu estado fresco e propriedades mecânicas. Os ensaios realizados nas amostras foram a perda de abatimento ao longo do tempo no estado fresco e resistência à compressão, módulo de elasticidade, absorção total de água e absorção de água por capilaridade no estado endurecido. Além disso, compósitos contendo os resíduos cerâmicos apresentaram menor consistência no estado fresco quando comparados a amostra de referência (sem resíduo). As diferenças entre o abatimento inicial e final das misturas com resíduo foram aumentando ao longo do tempo. Quanto ao estado endurecido, a resistência à compressão das amostras foi semelhante entre elas em duas idades, e todos os resultados permaneceram acima de 14 MPa aos 28 dias, conforme exigido pelo ASTM C476, sendo assim caracterizados como grautes estruturais para alvenaria portante. Para o teste do módulo de elasticidade, os resultados foram maiores para amostras com menor quantidade de resíduos devido ao menor número de vazios internos e maior volume de agregados naturais. A substituição do agregado natural por resíduos de construção civil (CCW) nas misturas aumentou o índice de vazios e a absorção de água, causando as menores densidades específicas da pesquisa. No geral, a amostra que apresentou os valores mais satisfatórios foi CCW 25%, mostrando que é possível produzir grautes estruturais com resíduos cerâmicos de construção para utilização no setor, mesmo para níveis mais altos de reposição, ocasionalmente.

ABSTRACT The lack of control regarding waste generation is a problem still faced by the construction industry, whereas its inputs could be used in the production of new cementitious composites, maintaining the quality, performance and sustainability of structures. This study developed grouts through the substitution of natural aggregate for residues of crushed ceramic bricks, evaluating its fresh state and mechanical properties. The samples displayed loss of workability and initial slump in fresh state, besides loss of compressive strength, elastic modulus, total water absorption and capillary water absorption in hardened state. In addition, composites with grog presented less consistency in fresh state when compared to the reference sample. The differences were even greater over time. As for the hardened state, the compressive strength of the samples was similaramong them at both ages, and all results remained above 14 MPa at 28 days, as required by ASTM C476, hence being characterized as structural grouts for masonry. For the elastic modulus test, the results were higher for samples with lower amounts of waste due to less internal voids and higher volume of natural aggregates. The substitution of natural aggregate for civil construction waste (CCW) in the mixtures increased void ratio and water absorption, while causing the lowest specific gravities of the research. Overall, the sample that presented the most satisfactory values was CCW 25%, showing that it is possible to obtain benefits from waste produced in factories and buildings, even for higher replacement levels, occasionally

RESUMO O processo de cura das matrizes cimentícias é muito importante na determinação das suas propriedades no estado endurecido. Nessas circunstâncias, o concreto pode sofrer sérias avarias quando exposto às severas variações térmicas. As baixas temperaturas de cura em que as matrizes cimentícias são expostas podem influenciar nas propriedades no estado endurecido, principalmente nas idades iniciais, prejudicando os processos de desfôrma e escoramento. Locais de frio intenso devem seguir procedimentos específicos de dosagem e aplicação de uma matriz cimentícia. Sendo assim, essa pesquisa objetivou analisar a influência da temperatura de cura no comportamento mecânico e físico de concretos em diversas temperaturas de cura, tanto nas idades inicias como nas mais avançadas. Observou-se que a diminuição na temperatura de cura proporcionou aumento de resistência em até 26% na idade de 28 dias nos concretos analisados, apesar de que apresentaram desenvolvimento lento das propriedades mecânicas nos 7 dias iniciais. Concretos com maior consumo de cimento apresentaram melhor desempenho nas idades inicias quando submetidos às temperaturas menores que 3 oC. Porém, percebeu-se que a cura em baixas temperaturas é capaz de proporcionar misturas mais íntegras em idades avançadas, visto que atingiram maior velocidade de propagação onda ultrassônica e resistência, pelo fato de ocorrer a hidratação residual do cimento.

Abstract The curing process of cementitious matrices is very important in determining their properties in the hardened state. In these circumstances, concrete can suffer serious damage when exposed to severe thermal variations. The low curing temperatures in which the cementitious matrices are exposed can influence their properties in the hardened state, especially in the early ages, impairing the processes of shaping and shoring. Intense cold places must follow specific dosing procedures and application of a cementitious matrix. Thus, this research aimed to analyze the influence of curing temperature on the mechanical and physical behavior of concretes at different curing temperatures, both at the early and later ages. It was observed that the decrease in curing temperature provided an increase of resistance up to 26% at the age of 28 days in the analyzed concretes, even though they presented slow development of the mechanical properties in the initial 7 days. Concretes with higher cement consumption showed better performance in early ages when submitted to temperatures lower than 3 °C. However, it was observed that curing at low temperatures is able to provide more intact mixtures at advanced ages, since they achieved higher ultrasonic wave propagation velocity and resistance, due to the residual hydration of the cement.

Resumo Analisando as características físicas das matrizes cimentícias, é possível destacar a retração como uma das mais influentes nos quesitos de durabilidade do material. Caso não seja previsto ou controlado, esse fenômeno tem potencial de causar graves problemas em sistemas, tal como a nucleação de fissuras. Devido ao efeito de retração da matriz, quando restringida, é inevitável deparar-se com a formação de fissuras nas idades iniciais do concreto em virtude do fenômeno da sua variação volumétrica. Sabe-se que a adição de fibras, respeitando a compatibilidade de dimensões entre os materiais constituintes e o teor adequado desse reforço, afeta as propriedades do compósito resultante, diminuindo seu potencial de fissuração. Nesse sentido, esta investigação avalia os efeitos causados pela inserção de fibras de poliéster novas e usadas na retração por secagem de concretos. Os resultados de resistência à compressão não sofreram alterações com a adição das fibras de poliéster no concreto de referência. Por meio do ensaio de anel restringido foi possível constatar ganhos de eficiência nas misturas com o uso de fibras, quando se refere à retração por secagem restringida da matriz de referência. As tensões de retração por secagem são aumentadas cerca de duas vezes com a inclusão dos reforços fibrosos. Pôde-se observar que a adição de fibras recicladas de poliéster proporcionou redução, cerca de 80%, na formação de fissuras na matriz quando comparada aos efeitos de reforço em concretos com adição das fibras virgens.

Abstract Analyzing the physical characteristics of the cementitious matrices, it is possible to highlight the shrinkage as one of the most influential in the durability. If not predicted or controlled, this has the potential to cause serious problems in systems, such as cracking. Due to the shrinkage effect of the matrix it is inevitable to encounter cracks in the early ages of the concrete due to the phenomenon of their volumetric variation. It is known that the addition of fibers affects the properties of the resulting composite, reducing its cracking potential. In this sense, this research evaluates the effects caused by the insertion of new and used polyester fibers in the drying retraction of concretes. The results of the compressive strength did not change with the addition of the polyester fibers in the reference concrete. By means of the restricted ring test it was possible to observe efficiency gains in the blends with the use of fibers, when it refers to the retraction by means of the reference matrix. The shrinkage stresses on drying were increased about twice with the inclusion of the fibrous reinforcements. It could be observed that the addition of recycled polyester fibers provided a reduction, about 80%, in the formation of cracks in the matrix when compared to the reinforcing effects in concrete with addition of the virgin fibers.

RESUMO Este trabalho propõe-se a analisar o desenvolvimento de grautes, material largamente utilizado na construção civil brasileira, com uso de agregados cerâmicos reciclados, em diferentes teores. Para isso foram estudados os percentuais de substituição do agregado graúdo natural pelo resíduo de blocos cerâmicos, através dos resultados de perda de abatimento no estado fresco, resistência à compressão axial, módulo de elasticidade, velocidade de propagação das ondas de ultrassom e absorção por capilaridade. Os resultados mostraram queda de resistência à compressão para os grautes, com maior ênfase para os com teores de 30% e 50%. Porém, todos atingiram os parâmetros normativos para esta aplicação, mostrando a potencialidade do uso desta alternativa para a construção civil.

ABSTRACT This study aims to evaluate the development of grouts, a material that is widely used in the Brazilian civil construction sector, applying recycled ceramic aggregates in different ratios. For that purpose, multiple substitution percentages of rough natural aggregates for the ceramic block residue were studied considering the results of loss of fresh state slump-flow, axial compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, ultrasonic wave transmission velocity, and capillary absorption. The results showed a compressive strength decrease of the grouts, mainly 30% and 50% ratios. On the other hand, all of them met the normative parameters for this application, indicating the potential application of this alternative material in civil construction.

RESUMO O concreto, durante exposição a elevadas temperaturas, caracteriza-se pela baixa difusividade térmica e incombustibilidade, resultando em desempenho satisfatório frente ao fogo. Todavia, constatam-se transformações químicas e físicas em seus componentes. A estabilidade do composto relaciona-se com a microestrutura, portanto consegue-se verificar a degradação do material através de técnicas avançadas de análise microestrutural. Neste contexto, o uso de ensaios no material, como a difratometria e fluorescência de raios X, mostrase atraente. Neste artigo, é descrita a inspeção de laje alveolar pré-fabricada de uma edificação industrial, a qual sofreu exposição às altas temperaturas provindas de um incêndio no subsolo da edificação. Avaliou-se o elemento estrutural através de ensaios de caracterização química, em diferentes espessuras da laje de concreto, estimando a temperatura alcançada em cada camada e, consequentemente, a perda de resistência do elemento estrutural. A partir dos resultados, constatou-se a temperatura de, aproximadamente, 700 ºC na superfície da laje e menos de 100 ºC nas camadas mais profundas. Estimou-se a redução na resistência à compressão do concreto na ordem de 25 % na camada de 20 mm e redução praticamente desprezável na região dos fios protendidos, atestando a segurança estrutural da estrutura após o sinistro.

ABSTRACT Concrete, during exposure to elevated temperatures, is characterized by low thermal diffusivity and incombustibility, resulting a satisfactory performance against fire. However, chemical and physical changes occur in its components. The stability of the compound relates to its microstructure, so it is possible to verify the material degradation using advanced techniques of microstructural analyses. In this context, the use of materials tests, such as diffraction and fluorescence X-ray, proves attractive. In this paper, it is described the pre-fabricated cellular slab inspection, an industrial building, which has undergone exposure to high temperatures emanating from a fire in the building ground. It was evaluated the structural element by chemical characterization tests with different thickness of the concrete slab, estimating the temperature reached in each layer and, consequently, the resistance loss of the structural element. From the results, it was found the temperature of approximately 700 ºC in the slab surface and less than 100 °C in the deeper layers. It was estimated the reduction in strength of concrete in the order of 25 % in 20 mm layer and negligible reduction in the region of prestressed wire, attesting to the structural safety of the structure after the accident.
