Resumo: Com exceção do texto Crise na Educação, publicado na década de cinquenta, Hannah Arendt escreveu diretamente sobre esta temática em seus escritos de juventude, na década de trinta. No entanto, seu problema de pesquisa ainda não estava bem delineado e o destaque para ambos os textos está relacionado com o conceito de formação (Bildung) e não diretamente a respeito da educação e de suas instituições. Nosso objetivo neste artigo é investigar como o tema foi tratado por Hannah Arendt antes da sua imigração para os Estados Unidos e quais são os elementos que permanecerão em suas obras posteriores. Para tanto, nos ocuparemos com a investigação de dois textos: i) sua resenha a respeito da obra do pedagogo alemão Hans Weil, Die Entstehung des deutschen Bildungsprinzip (O surgimento do princípio alemão da Bildung), publicado em 1930 e ii) O Iluminismo e a questão judaica, de 1932.

Abstract: With the exception of the text Crisis in Education, published in the 1950s, Hannah Arendt wrote directly about this subject in the writings of her youth, in the 1930s. However, her research problem had not yet been well delineated, and both texts dealing with the matter highlight the concept of formation (Bildung) instead of directly addressing education and its institutions. Our goal in this article is to investigate how the subject was addressed by Hannah Arendt prior to her immigration to the United States and what elements remain in her later works. In order to do so, we shall deal with two texts: (i) her review of German pedagogue Hans Weil's work, Die Entstehung des deutschen Bildungsprinzip, published in 1930; and (ii) The Enlightenment and the Jewish Question, from 1932.

Resumo: A questão da secularização também tem espaço no pensamento de Hannah Arendt. A autora sempre procurou um conceito puro de política (reinen Begriff des Politischen), que fosse independente de qualquer raiz religiosa ou que estivesse desvinculado de toda fonte metafísica e transcendente. No entanto, desde Platão, a tradição do pensamento político ocidental não encontra tal autonomia e esse problema se repete nos tempos modernos, sobretudo no momento da fundação de corpos políticos, como é o caso das revoluções, por exemplo. Além disso, Arendt também esclarece como o vácuo de autoridade contribui para a permanência do problema e reforça a necessidade daquilo que ela entende como "o incômodo problema do absoluto". Este artigo privilegia a investigação de tais questões através dos textos Sobre a revolução, Religião e política e O que é autoridade? e sustenta a necessidade da separação das esferas política e religiosa, visando à boa manutenção de ambas.

Abstract: One can argue that secularization is an important issue in Hannah Arendt's thought. This thinker always sought a pure concept of politics (reinen Begriff des Politischen), one that is independent of any religious roots or transcendent and metaphysical sources. Nevertheless, the tradition of Western political thought since Plato has not found such independence. This problem remains in modernity, especially at the moment of the foundation of new political bodies, as in the case of revolutions. Furthermore, Arendt also explains how the absence of authority reinforces what she calls the "problem of the absolute". This article focuses on the investigation of these issues through texts that include On Revolution and What is Authority?, and defends the separation of the religious and political spheres in order to ensure their existence.

Resumo Arendt e Voegelin debateram acerca do totalitarismo e, durante o ano de 1951, trocaram algumas correspondências. No ano posterior, as cartas foram transformadas em resenha e publicadas na Review of Politics. Arendt responde aos comentários de Voegelin e assim se constitui a pequena conversa entre ambos. Tal debate é pouco conhecido no Brasil e, apesar de ser pequeno, revela as tendências de pensamento de Arendt e Voegelin, pois nele estão contidas ideias que serão desenvolvidas posteriormente no pensamento de ambos, como é o caso do “gnosticismo” para Voegelin e da “pluralidade” para Arendt. No debate, ficam evidentes as diferentes tendências de pensamento para os autores, e tal diferença se manifesta, sobretudo, na querela levantada por Voegelin acerca da “imutabilidade da natureza humana”.

Abstract Hannah Arendt and Eric Voegelin discussed about the Totalitarianism and during 1951 changed correspondences. The following year, the letters were published in Review of Politics in review format. Arendt replies to the Voegelin’s comments and so borns the talk between them. This debate is little-known in Brazil, but despite being small, the debate reveals how both think about the Totalitarianism and other categories of Arendt’s and Voegelin’s thought like the “gnosticism” for Voegelin and “plurality” for Arendt. In the debate the differences of thought are obvious. This difference is manifest when Voegelin questions Arendt on the “immutability of human nature”.

Em Da Revolução, Arendt aponta para o vigor da política que renasce por meio das iniciativas revolucionárias. Por outro lado, é preciso atentar para o fato de que várias outras características presentes em Da Revolução apontam para aspectos críticos e negativos da modernidade que estão presentes dentro do âmago das próprias revoluções. O objetivo deste texto consiste em analisar os elementos modernos presentes nas revoluções que são admirados por Arendt, bem como os retornos que ela faz à antiguidade, de modo que seja possível contrapô-los e mostrar que, apesar de a autora louvar os feitos modernos das revoluções, o faz tendo Atenas e Roma como referências, já que a forma de participação dos conselhos provenientes das revoluções lembra, em grande escala, a polis grega, e a liberdade pública exaltada pelas revoluções (neste caso, a americana) corresponde à liberdade dos antigos, da mesma maneira como o ato de fundação da república americana lembra com grande vigor a fundação da "cidade eterna". O objetivo, longe de enquadrar Arendt em alguma das categorias que seus comentadores já fizeram, está em perceber a relevância de não negar a importância que os antigos legaram para as considerações "modernas" de Arendt, assim como voltar os olhares para essa autora como alguém que realmente pensou seu tempo tendo os antigos como alguns parâmetros, mas não considerando isso de forma inteiramente negativa. Em outras palavras, trata-se de tentar assumir esse caráter presente na obra de Arendt, sem que ele seja tomado como um defeito.

In On Revolution, Arendt points to the positive political forces reborn through revolutionary movements, but also criticizes what she sees as the negative aspects of these revolutions. She compares the modern elements in these revolutions, which she admired, with Athens and Rome, and celebrates participation in revolutionary councils as a renewal of the ancient Greek polis. Arendt praises the public freedom exalted by these revolutions (especially in the American Revolution) as a reflection of the freedom of the ancients, and compares the American founding with the founding of Rome. Some critics have accused Arendt of focusing too much on the ancients, and thus overemphasizing the negative aspects of modern revolutions. In fact, she does use the ancients as a standard by which to measure the modern, but this does not undermine her larger project. Using the ancients as a standard allows her to highlight the positive aspects of revolution in the modern world.
