The influence of NaCl salt in the hydration of the Portland cement paste class G was studied using a Non Conventional Differential Thermal Analysis (NCDTA) on the first 24 hours of cement hydration. The mass of salt used corresponds to 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20% of mass of water used in the preparation of the pastes. The water/cement ratio (w/c) remained constant, being 0.46, and the pastes final volume was 99.9mL. Applying a deconvolution method to separate overlapped NCDTA peaks it was possible to estimate the energy released during the different stages of hydration and the effect of salt in cement hydration process. The presence of up to 10% of salt accelerated the hydration process and increased the hydration of C3S and C3A, while the 20% of the salt causes a delayed hydration and decreased the hydration of C3S and C3A. Futhermore, cement pastes with the same percentages of NaCl and with different hydration times were evaluated by Thermogravimetry (TG), Derivative Thermogravimetry (DTG) and Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA). After 28 days the presence of salt caused a greater increase in the formation of hydrated products.

This work presents a study, which compares the early stages of hydration of a High Initial Strength and Sulphate Resistant Portland Cement (HIS SR PC) with those of Type II F Portland Cement (PC II), by Non-Conventional Differential Thermal Analysis (NCDTA) within the first 24 hours of hydration. Water/cement (w/c) ratios equal to 0.5, 0.6 and 0.66 were used to prepare the pastes. The hydration of these two types of cement was monitored on real time by NCDTA curves, through the thermal effects of the hydration reactions, from which cumulative evolved energy curves were obtained. These techniques allow one to analyse the influence of each type of cement on the main stages that occur during the hydration process. Thermogravimetric analysis were also performed at 4 and 24h of hydration for both cements, to analyse the influence of each kind of cement on the amount of the main formed hydrated products. The results showed that with 4h of hydration, the total combined water amount released from the hydrated products was higher for the PC II pastes than for the HIS SR PC pastes. Otherwise, with 24h of hydration, the amount of the total combined water released from the hydrated products was higher for the HIS SR PC pastes than for the PC II pastes.

This work presents a study on the separation of Fe(III) and Ti(IV) from sulfuric acid leaching solutions of ilmenite (FeTiO3) using liquid-liquid extraction with D2EHPA in n-dodecane as extracting agent. The distribution coefficients (K D) of the elements related to free acidity and concentration of Fe(III) and Ti(IV) were determined. Free acidity was changed from 3x10-2 to 11.88 mol L-1 and D2EHPA concentration was fixed at 1.5 mol L-1. Recovery of final products as well as recycling of wastes generated in the process were also investigated. The LLE process as a feasible alternative to obtain high-purity TiO2.
