RESUMO O resíduo de refino de bauxita (lama vermelha) é um resíduo importante gerado na produção de alumínio, podendo ser utilizado como adsorvente de baixo custo. Este estudo teve como objetivo investigar a influência do tratamento térmico na adsorção do corante azul reativo (RB19) por lama vermelha, comparando com a capacidade de adsorção de lama vermelha não tratada termicamente. O tratamento térmico da lama vermelha até 500°C resultou em aumento da capacidade de adsorção, variando seu valor de 357 mg g-1 (lama vermelha não tratada) a 416 mg g-1, em condições ácidas. No entanto, amostras de lama vermelha tratadas termicamente a 600 e 800°C mostraram uma redução na capacidade de adsorção, chegando a 337 mg g-1 em meio ácido. A mudança na capacidade máxima de adsorção de RB 19 na lama vermelha tratada termicamente está associada a valores de área superficial específica. Assim, é possível concluir que a lama vermelha tratada termicamente em 500°C pode ser utilizada para o tratamento de água e águas residuárias com maior eficiência do que a lama vermelha natural nas indústrias têxteis, contribuindo para novos insights sobre possíveis aplicações na indústria têxtil.

ABSTRACT Red mud, a waste product generated during alumina extraction from bauxite, could be used as a low-cost adsorbent. Here, the effect of thermal treatment on the adsorption of Reactive Blue 19 (RB19) dye by red mud was compared with the adsorption capacity of untreated red mud. Thermal treatment of red mud at 500°C results in an increase in adsorption capacity from 357 mg g-1 (untreated red mud) to 416 mg g-1, under acidic conditions. Red mud samples thermally treated at 600°C and 800°C show a reduction in adsorption capacity, however, falling to 337 mg g-1, in acid medium. The change in the maximum adsorption capacity of red mud to RB19 following thermal treatment is associated with specific surface area. Red mud subjected to 500°C can be used for the treatment of water and wastewaters with a higher efficiency than untreated red mud, thus finding possible application in the textile industry.

Abstract Thin a-C:H:Si:O:N films were deposited from plasmas fed hexamethyldisiloxane, oxygen and nitrogen, and characterized as a function of the partial pressure of oxygen in the feed, Rox. Deposition rates varied from 10 to 27 nm min-1. Surface roughness was independent of Rox, being around 10 nm. The films contain C=C and C=O, and also Si-C and Si-O-Si groups. Lower [C] and [N] but greater [O] and [Si] were measured in the films as Rox was increased. Refractive indices of ~ 1.5 and optical energy gaps which fell from ~ 3.3 to ~2.3 eV were observed with increasing Rox. The Urbach energy fell with increasing optical gap, which is characteristic of amorphous materials. Such materials have potential as transparent barrier coatings.

Abstract In this work we discuss the wettability, chemical composition, surface morphology and optical transmittance of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) samples treated by Plasma Immersion and by Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation. The total pressure of N2 or SF6 was 6.66 Pa, for treatments of 900 s, applied rf power of 25 and 100 W, and the substrate temperature was about 298 K. In PIII, high voltage pulses of -2400 V at a cycle time of 30 µs and a frequency of 300 Hz were used. The wettability of the samples was assessed via contact angle measurements, which indicated either hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity, depending on the plasma composition. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopic analysis confirmed strong fluorine attachment to the surface after treatments using SF6 plasmas, and the presence of oxygen after treatments using nitrogen plasmas. Atomic Force Microscopy images showed that the roughness Rrms, depends on the plasma conditions. Optical transmittance in the visible region, T (λ), was increased by plasma immersion. The greatest contact angle observed was 142º (PI cathode), while the highest roughness was 213.2 nm. The highest optical transmittance in the visible region was around to 90% (PI anode).

Cold plasmas fed trichloromethane-argon mixtures were used to treat cross-linked polyethylene (PE) to improve the adhesion of water-based paint. The effects of the plasma treatment undertaken at different percentages of CHCl3 in the plasma feed, CCl, were investigated using Infrared Spectroscopy in Diffuse Reflection (DR) mode, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), goniometry for surface contact angle measurements, profilometry for roughness measurements, and paint adhesion tests. All the treatments modify the surfaces by introducing chlorine. Oxygen is present in the bulk and on the surfaces of the treated and untreated material. The treatments do not alter the bulk, but tend to increase the surface roughness and contact angle. When CHCl3 is present in the plasma subsequent paint adhesion is improved from a very poor classification of 4 to an excellent classification of 0 (assessed according to the appropriate Brazilian standards (BS EN ISO 2409:2007 and BS 3900-E6:2007A)). Surface roughness is not increased at low CCl but improved paint adhesion occurs for all CCl > 0. Although the causes of the improved paint adhesion with the plasma treatment are unclear, they may be related to the plasma activation of unsaturated carbon and oxygen functionalities.

Aluminum zinc oxide (AZO) thin films were synthesized on glass substrates by radio frequency (rf) magnetron sputtering from a metallic Zn-Al (5 at. %) target at room temperature. The morphological, structural, electrical and optical properties of the films were studied as a function of the sputtering pressure, which was varied from 0.1 to 6.7 Pa. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses revealed that the films obtained were polycrystalline, having a hexagonal wurtzite structure with a preferential orientation in the (002) plane. In addition, the crystallite size increased as a function of sputtering pressure. Owing to the re-sputtering of the Zn atoms from the growing film, the aluminum concentration presented a maximum value of 13 at. %. At pressures close to 0.16 Pa, we obtained films with values of electrical resistivity and mobility of 2.8 10-3 Ω cm and 17 cm2/Vs, respectively. Finally, our results indicate that the structure zone diagram proposed by Thornton and later modified by Kluth does not fully predict the structural/morphological behavior of the AZO films, since plasma interactions must also be taken into account. With the methodology used, transparent conductive electrodes can be deposited on substrates at low temperatures.

Thin films deposited from propanol-chloroform-argon mixtures by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition at different partial pressures of chloroform in the feed, CCl, were characterized after two years of aging and their characteristics compared with their as-deposited properties. Film thickness decreased and surface roughness increased with aging. Surface contact angles also increased with aging for the chlorinated films. For the film deposited with 40% chloroform in the feed the contact angle increased about 14°. Transmission infrared and Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that the films gain carbonyl and hydroxyl groups and lose chlorine and hydrogen on aging. Chlorination appears to make the films more durable. Delamination was observed for the unchlorinated films.

Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) is promising for the processing of biomaterials because it enables the production of surfaces with adjustable composition and structure. In this work, aimed at the improvement of the bioactivity of titanium, PEO has been used to grow calcium phosphide coatings on titanium substrates. The effects of the addition of magnesium acetate to the electrolytes on the composition of the coatings produced during 120 s on Ti disks using bipolar voltage pulses and solutions of calcium and magnesium acetates and sodium glycerophosphate as electrolytes have been studied. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy, Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry with Rietveld refinement and profilometry were used to characterize the modified samples. Coatings composed of nearly 50 % of Mg-doped hydroxyapatite have been produced. In certain conditions up to 4% Mg can be incorporated into the coating without any observable significant structural modifications of the hydroxyapatite.

In this work, the surface and electrical characteristics ZnO:Al thin films deposited by RF magnetron sputtering onto glass substrates have been investigated. Analysis of surface morphologies revealed two growth stages. In the first stage, up to thicknesses of 100 nm, the films show surface structures with a granular form without preferential orientation. Beyond thicknesses of 100 nm, however, the grain structures increase in size and height, producing a pyramidal form and preferred orientation along the c-axis. The XRD results show that the films have a preferred orientation in the (002) plane. Furthermore, with the evolution of the film thickness the electrical resistivity decreases to a minimum of 1.6 × 10- 3 Ω cm for the film of 465 nm thickness. The doping with aluminum atoms produces an increase in concentration of charge carriers to around 8.8 × 10(19) cm- 3. All films exhibit high optical transmittance (above 85%) in the visible region.

The present study reports the deposition of coating using Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) onto grade 4 titanium to produce novel surface features. Samples were treated in an electrolytic solution of calcium acetate and sodium glycerolphosphate. The temporal evolution of hydroxyapatite coatings with high Ra roughness and a maximum thickness of 120 µm was obtained. X-ray spectra revealed the presence of hydroxyapatite, rutile and calcium phosphate. Cell growth measurement by MTT assay showed that the coatings were not toxic because cells grew on all samples.

During the extraction of aluminum from bauxite, a waste of oxides containing traces of heavy metals in a highly alkaline matrix, called Red Mud (RM), is produced. In this study RM is characterized and the feasibility of using it as a precursor for the production of thin films by Plasma Sputtering and by Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation and Deposition (PIIID) is demonstrated. The chemical structure and composition, surface morphology, topography, and wettability of the films prepared using such methodologies were investigated. The films consist mainly of the elements aluminum, silicon, iron and carbon. Infrared spectroscopic analyses reveal the presence of C=O, C-H2, Fe(OH), Al-O and Si-C functionalities. RF Sputtering produced films with smoother surfaces, whereas PIIID produced granular surface structures. Surface contact angle measurements showed that despite the presence of oxides and hydroxides, the films are hydrophobic, thus exhibiting an interesting link between the physical and thermodynamical properties.

OBJETIVO: Neste trabalho nós estimamos a produção de sedimentos para uma microbacia urbanizada e de pequeno porte, localizada em Sorocaba, Estado de São Paulo. Discutimos as principais causas que levaram ao cenário observado; MÉTODOS: Durante um ano, amostras de água e informações hidrológicas sobre o canal do rio foram coletadas num ponto de amostragem. Em laboratório, amostras foram secas em estufa (80 ºC) e o total de sólido suspenso foi pesado para cada amostra. Para a estimativa da produção de sedimentos nós usamos o método simplificado de Colby. A Razão de Transferência de Sedimentos (RTS) foi estimada por dois métodos: a razão relevo - comprimento e a razão de bifurcação. RESULTADOS: a produção anual de sedimento estimada para o período foi 1.636,1 toneladas. A produção específica de sedimentos foi 541.7 t.km- 2.ano -1. A carga de arraste foi a fração predominantemente produzida. RTS variou entre 60 e 66% de acordo com o método empregado. CONCLUSÕES: As principais forças que causam o desequilíbrio hidrossedimentológico são a falta de vegetação ciliar, o despejo de resíduos de construção civil em locais inadequados e o lançamento de esgoto não tratado. Portanto, se os três principais fatores fossem controlados, uma melhoria significativa na qualidade ambiental seriam obtidos, principalmente em relação à qualidade da água.

AIM: In this paper we estimate the sediment yield and other related information for a small urbanized watershed, located in Sorocaba, São Paulo State. The driving forces that produce the observed scenario are presented and discussed; METHODS: Over a year, water samples and hydrologic information concerning the river channel were collected monthly at one sampling site. In the laboratory, water samples were oven dried (80 ºC) and the total suspended solid weighed for each sample. To estimate sediment yield we used Colby's simplified method. The sediment delivery ratio (SDR) was estimated using two methods: the relief - length ratio and the bifurcation ratio; RESULTS: The annual sediment yield estimated for the period was 1,636.1 t. The total specific sediment yield was 541.7 t.km -2.y-1. Bedload was the predominant fraction. The SDR changed between 60 and 66% according to the method employed. CONCLUSIONS: The main driving forces of hydrosedimentological disequilibrium are the lack of riparian vegetation, the dumping of construction wastes at inadequate sites, and the launching of untreated sewage. Hence, if these three factors were controlled, a significant improvement in the environmental quality, particularly water quality, might be achieved.

In devices used in open-heart surgery and dialysis, blood must be continuously processed using extracorporeal circuits composed of peristaltic pumps and active components such as specific filters and oxygenators. Several procedures have been employed to avoid blood coagulation induced by contact with the artificial surfaces of such devices. Often heparin, a bioactive protein able to prevent clot formation, is employed. In this work, we have used heparin-containing gas plasmas to evaluate the possibility of depositing adherent anticoagulant films onto PVC and glass surfaces. The films were produced by radiofrequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition from heparin/isopropanol and heparin/hexamethyldisiloxane solutions. In addition, the effects of exposure to SF6 plasmas on the compatibility of such surfaces have also been investigated. The blood compatibility was evaluated through the determination of the density of platelets and fibrinogen and activated partial thromboplastin (APTT) and prothrombin times (PT) of human blood freshly collected and after contact for 2.5 hours with different surfaces. The deposited films were also characterized by infrared spectroscopy, contact angle and surface energy measurements. The coagulation time of blood, placed in contact with glass substrates coated by PECVD films of heparin/isopropanol mixtures, and in contact with SF6 plasma-treated PVC, increased by about 60 and 20%, respectively, compared to the values measured with untreated samples.
