Resumen La especie Gravatamberus pilosus Mendes & Andersen, 2008 se registra por primera vez en Argentina. La especie se conoce en Chile y este nuevo registro debe tomarse como documentación de la aparición de G. pilosus en el lado oriental de los Andes. Como los machos adultos mostraron diferencias con la descripción original, se proporciona una descripción de los ejemplares argentinos para describir su variación intraespecífica. En la misma localidad se recolectaron hembras adultas pertenecientes al género Gravatamberus y se interpreta como la hembra de G. pilosus. Por lo tanto, se proporciona por primera vez una descripción detallada de la hembra del género.

Abstract The species Gravatamberus pilosus Mendes & Andersen, 2008 is recorded for the first time in Argentina. The species is known from Chile and this new record should be taken as documentation of the occurrence of G. pilosus in the Eastern side of the Andes. As adult males showed differences from the original description, a description of the Argentine specimens is provided to describe their intraspecific variation. Female adults belonging to the genus Gravatamberus were collected in the same locality and are interpreted as the female of G. pilosus. Therefore, a detailed description of the female for the genus is provided for the first time.

Abstract The feeding habits of Chironomidae in hill streams in the pampean region have not been described. In this study, we analyzed the gut contents of this insect family with an aim at establishing their diet in an intermittent stream in the Ventania-Hill system. We sampled three sites with different habitat characteristics (i. e., altitude, substrate type, and current velocity). Of the total of nine taxa were recorded, the only one present at all sites was Corynoneura sp. 1. The food items found were detritus, diatoms, filamentous chlorophytes, euglenophytes, vascular plants, fungi, and animal remains. Most of the taxa could be classified as gathering collectors, with those having a higher proportion of detritus in the gut contents although the guts of Pentaneura nr. cinerea, Cricotopus sp. 1, and Onconeura analiae included high proportions of animal remains. No differences in the feeding habits were attributable to the location in the stream. Resumen Se llevó a cabo un estudio bianual en un área protegida del Sistema serrano de Ventania donde la estepa pampeana y las cabeceras de los arroyos mantienen las condiciones cercanas a las naturales. Se analizó la composición y la estructura del ensamble de Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) en dos arroyos prístinos y su relación con las variables fisicoquímicas. Se identificaron 15444 especímenes, correspondientes a 37 especies distribuidas en 4 subfamilias. El ensamble presentó una estructura más similar a las reportadas para los arroyos de la región Andina o extra Andina, que la de otras áreas de la región pampeana. Orthocladiinae presentó la mayor riqueza taxonómica y densidad, mientras que Podonominae las menores. Chironominae estuvo mejor representada aguas abajo, presentando géneros con distribución amplia. De los 5 géneros de Podonominae reportados en la región Andina-Patagónica, 3 de ellos (Podonomus Philippi, ParochlusEnderlein y Podonomopsis Brundin) fueron colectados. La presencia de Podonomus y Podonomopsis representa el registro de menor altitud para ambos géneros. Las variables fisicoquímicas difirieron entre las estaciones, y la conductividad fue la única que mostró un gradiente altitudinal. Las especies que prevalecieron en los sitios pedemontanos, correlacionaron positivamente con la conductividad. Con pocas excepciones, las especies recolectadas se registraron en otoño y primavera. En el arroyo Toro, la densidad fue significativamente mayor en la primavera del segundo año. Nuestro estudio aporta información de base sobre la ecología y la sistemática de un grupo de insectos ampliamente utilizado en estudios de biomonitoreo de ambientes acuáticos, lo cual resulta muy importante para respaldar la importancia de preservar esta área.

Abstract A two-year study was conducted in a conservation area of the Ventania hill system where the Pampean grassy steppes and their headwater springs maintain conditions close to natural ones. The composition and the structure of Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) along two short hill pristine streams and their relationship with the physicochemical variables were analyzed. A total of 15444 individuals belonging to 37 species of four subfamilies were identified. An assemblage structure more similar to those described for Andean or Argentine extra-Andean hill streams than to those of the surrounding Pampas was observed. Orthocladiinae showed the highest and Podonominae the lowest taxonomic richness and density. Chironominae was best represented downstream by genera with wide distribution. From the five Podonominae genera reported in the Andean-Patagonic region, three of them (Podonomus Philippi, Parochlus Enderlein and PodonomopsisBrundin) were collected. The presence of Podonomus and Podonomopsis represent the reports at lower altitudes for both genera. The physicochemical variables differed between seasons, and only water conductivity showed an altitudinal gradient. Those species prevailing in piedmont sites correlated positively with conductivity. With few exceptions, the species collected were recorded in both seasons. In Toro stream, density was significantly highest in Spring of the second year. This study provides the ecological and systematic baseline knowledge of an insect group widely used in biomonitoring of aquatic environments, to provide biological information that supports the importance of preserving this area.

Abstract Studies of the relationships between the temporal variation of biological phenomena and environmental factors are essential to understanding the dynamics of communities. Phenology is a structuring element and, together with voltinism, is related to timing of reproductive activities. The aim of this study is to ascertain the structure and composition of the Chironomid assemblage and its emergence patterns in relation to the environmental variables through the use of the Chironomid pupal exuviae technique using the Neotropical streams as a model. The streams presented similar species compositions. The highest density of pupal exuviae was recorded during spring and the greatest richness in late summer and early autumn. Chironominae presented greater prevalence throughout the year with oscillations for Orthocladiinae and Tanypodinae. Chironominae and Tanypodinae presented emergence peaks in spring-summer and Orthocladiinae in autumn-winter. Rainfall, photoperiod and water and air temperatures structured the Chironomid assemblage, influencing emergence. Univoltine, bivoltine and multivoltine species were recorded. The species presented interspecific synchronization in emergence peaks at different times of the year.

ABSTRACT A new monotypic genus and species of predaceous midge from the southernmost area of the Argentinean Yungas, Yungahelea australis Spinelli and Ronderos, is described and illustrated from male and female adults. It belongs to a group containing the Ceratopogonini genera Parabezzia Malloch, Diaphanobezzia Ingram and Macfie, Spinellihelea Borkent, Grogan and Picado, Leptohelea Wirth and Blanton, and Fittkauhelea Wirth and Blanton. Phylogenetic interpretation indicates that Yungahelea is the sister group of Spinellihelea or the clade composed by Parabezzia and Diaphanobezzia.

The study of the type material of Chironomus (Polypedilum) griseistriatum Edwards, 1931 described from Patagonia lead us to formally transfer the species to Apedilum Townes, 1945 as a new combination, and a reared specimen allows us to describe its pupa. Based on several larvae belonging to Apedilum collected in the proximity of the localities in which the adults and pupae were found, we tentatively describe the larval stage. Subfossil larval head capsules of the same species were found in Laguna Stibnite at 46°S in Chile dated to about 2,500 years ago and in Puerto Blest, Lago Nahuel Huapi at 41°S in Argentina dated about 2,000 years ago. We discuss the habitat of the species based on both modern and subfossil material. Identification keys to male adult, pupae and fourth instar larvae are also provided.

El estudio del material tipo de Chironomus (Polypedilum) griseistriatum Edwards, 1931 de Patagonia nos permite transferir formalmente la especie a Apedilum Townes, 1945 como una nueva combinación, y la cría de un especimen nos permite describir su pupa. Sobre la base de varias larvas pertenecientes a Apedilum colectadas en las proximidades de las localidades en las cuales fueron encontrados los adultos y las pupas, describimos tentativamente el estadio larval. Cápsulas de larvas subfósiles de la misma especie fueron encontradas en la Laguna Stibnite a 46°S en Chile datadas en aproximadamente 2.500 años atrás y en Puerto Blest, Lago Nahuel Huapi a 41°S en Argentina datadas en aproximadamente 2.000 años atrás. Discutimos el hábitat de la especie basados en el material moderno y subfósil. Se provee además de claves de identificación del cuarto estadio larval, pupa y adulto macho.

The taxonomic status of Polypedilum quinquesetosum (Edwards) is reviewed upon the study of the male holotype of the species and new findings. After the character analysis, this species belongs to the subgenus Tripodura Townes and the new combination is established. The species diagnosis is expanded, the relationships with the rest of the Neotropical species of the subgenus are discussed and its geographical distribution is extended.

El estado taxonómico de Polypedilum quinquesetosum (Edwards) es revisado sobre la base del estudio del holotipo macho de la especie y de nuevos hallazgos. Tras el análisis de caracteres, esta especie pertenece al subgénero Tripodura Townes y se establece la nueva combinación. Se expande la diagnosis de la especie, se discute las relaciones con el resto de las especies Neotropicales del subgénero y se extiende su distribución geográfica.

The first report of Parochlus Enderlein from Ventania hill system is presented, being the first record of the genus from Buenos Aires province. The description and illustration of the female adult of Parochlus carolinae Rodriguez et al. is presented and the original male and larval descriptions are emended. Characters from the pupal thoracic horn are emphasized to distinguish P. carolinae from other Parochlus species.

Se presenta el primer reporte de Parochlus Enderlein del sistema serrano de Ventania, el cual constituye el primer registro de este género de la provincia de Buenos Aires. Se describe e ilustra la hembra de Parochlus carolinae Rodriguez et al. y se enmiendan las descripciones originales del macho y de la larva. Se remarcan caracteres del cuerno torácico de la pupa para distinguir P. carolinae de otras especies del género Parochlus.

We discuss some topics which we believe are controversial on Escalante's work (2011). Both, the definition of PAE and the classification of the types of PAE proposed by the author do not accurately reflect the proposal by the original authors. The defense that the author makes is not justified. The argument used to dismiss these criticisms are inconsistent with the classification proposed for the PAE. PAE as historical method aims at discovering relationships between areas. Thus, we believe that having the same objectives as the methods of cladistic biogeography allow us the comparison. PAE considers the endemic species in shared areas as indicative of a shared history, similar to the implementation of the assumption 0 and similar to phylogenetic systematics synapomorphies. The presence of such species in these areas could also be explained by recent dispersal events, or because they are favorable ecological conditions. The question made to PAE is essential for obtaining consistent hypothesis, but not necessarily the correct answer obtained with PAE.

Discutimos algunos tópicos que a nuestro entender son controvertidos del trabajo de Escalante (2011). Tanto la definición del PAE como las clasificaciones de los tipos de PAE propuestas por la autora, no reflejan exactamente la propuesta por los autores originales. La defensa que la autora hace a críticas que se han hecho del PAE, creemos que no está justificada. El argumento que utiliza para descalificar estas críticas se contradice con respecto a una de las clasificaciones que propone para el PAE. PAE como método histórico, tiene como objetivo el descubrimiento de relaciones entre áreas. De esta manera, consideramos que el hecho de tener los mismos objetivos que los métodos de la biogeografía cladística es lo que permite su comparación. El PAE considera las especies endémicas de algunas áreas (análogas a sinapomorfías en sistemática filogenética) como indicadoras de una historia biótica compartida entre ellas, similar a la aplicación del supuesto 0. La presencia de tales especies en esas áreas también podría explicarse por eventos de dispersión recientes, o bien, porque se encuentran condiciones ecológicas favorables. La pregunta que se le hace al PAE es fundamental para la obtención de hipótesis coherentes, pero no necesariamente la respuesta correcta se obtiene con PAE.

The male of Bryophaenocladius carolinae sp. nov. is described and figured. The species can be separated from all other Neotropical species by having a hyaline, blunt triangular anal point, a comparatively small, sub-rectangular inferior volsella, gonostylus widened medially with an outer heel, R4+5 ending opposite to end of M3+4, setose squama and absence of comb on middle tibia and pseudospurs. A key to the adult males of the Neotropical Bryophaenocladius Thienemann is provided.

Se describe y se dibuja el macho de Bryophaenocladius carolinae sp. nov. La especie puede separarse del resto de las especies Neotropicales porque posee una punta anal hialina y triangular, con su punta redondeada; la volsella inferior sub-rectangular y comparativamente más pequeña; gonostilo ensanchado en su parte media y con una quilla externa; R4+5 finalizando opuesta a la terminación de M3+4; escama setosa, pseudospinas y peine en la tibia de la pata dos, ausentes. Se brinda una clave de identificación de adultos machos neotropicales del género Bryophaenocladius Thienemann.

The objective of our paper was to analyze the distributional patterns of trilophodont gomphotheres, applying an event-based biogeographic method. We have attempted to interpret the biogeographical history of trilophodont gomphotheres in the context of the geological evolution of the continents they inhabited during the Cenozoic. To reconstruct this biogeographic history we used DIVA 1.1. This application resulted in an exact solution requiring three vicariant events, and 15 dispersal events, most of them (i.e., 14) occurring at terminal taxa. The single dispersal event at an internal node affected the common ancestor to Sinomastodon plus the clade Cuvieronius - Stegomastodon. A vicariant event took place which resulted in two isolated groups: (1) Amebelodontinae (Africa - Europe - Asia) and (2) Gomphotheriinae (North America). The Amebelodontinae clade was split by a second vicariant event into Archaeobelodon (Africa and Europe), and the ancestors of the remaining genera of the clade (Asia). In contrast, the Gomphotheriinae clade evolved mainly in North America. A dispersal event expanded the range of the common ancestor to Sinomastodon plus the clade Cuvieronius - Stegomastodon to include Asia again. A new vicariant event split North America and Asia resulting in the isolation of Sinomastodon in the latter, and the ancestor of the clade Cuvieronius - Stegomastodon in the former. Finally, these two genera reached South America in two independent dispersal events. This biogeographic history has been driven by sea-level changes. During the low sea-level episodes, trilophodont gomphotheres expanded its geographical distribution by means of dispersion events, and during high sea-level episodes suffered vicariant events.

El objetivo del trabajo fue analizar el modelo de distribución de los gonfoterios trilofodontos, aplicando un método biogeográfico basado en eventos. Se ha tratado de interpretar la historia biogeográfica de los gonfoterios trilofodontos en el contexto de la evolución biológica de los continentes que ellos habitaron durante el Cenozoico. Para reconstruir esta historia biogeográfica se ha utilizado el programa DIVA 1.1. Sus resultados indican tres eventos vicarantes y 15 dispersivos, la mayoría de ellos (i.e., 14) acontecidos en los taxones terminales. El único evento dispersivo en un nodo interno afectó al ancestro común de Sinomastodon más el clado Cuvieronius - Stegomastodon. Un primer evento vicariante dio lugar a dos grupos aislados: (1) Amebelodontinae (África - Europa - Asia) y (2) Gomphotheriinae (Norte América). El clado Amebelodontinae, por un segundo evento, se escindió en Archaeobelodon (África y Europa) y los ancestros de los géneros restantes del clado (Asia). En contraste, el clado Gomphotheriinae evolucionó principalmente en Norte América. Un evento dispersivo expandió el rango del ancestro común de Sinomastodon más el clado Cuvieronius - Stegomastodon para incluir Asia de nuevo. Un nuevo evento vicariante separó a Norte América y Asia, dando lugar al aislamiento de Sinomastodon en Asia, y al del ancestro del clado Cuvieronius - Stegomastodon en Norte América. Finalmente, estos dos géneros alcanzan América del Sur en dos eventos dispersivos independientes. Esta historia biogeográfica ha sido dirigida por los cambios en el nivel del mar. Durante los momentos donde los niveles del mar fueron más bajos los gonfoterios trilofodontos expandieron su distribución geográfica por dispersión, mientras que en los momentos en los que los niveles fueron más altos sufrieron eventos de vicariancia.

Adults male and female of Labrundinia separata (Edwards), and the immatures are described and illustrated. The studied specimens were collected as immatures in the Notophagus forest of northern Argentinean Patagonia, and reared to adult in laboratory. The species is compared with the most similar cogeners.

Se redescriben e ilustran los adultos macho y hembra, y se describen los inmaduros de Labrundinia separata (Edwards). Los ejemplares estudiados fueron colectados como inmaduros en los bosques de Notophagus del norte de la Patagonia Argentina y criados, hasta adultos, en laboratorio. Esta especie es comparada con sus congéneres más similares.

Rodríguez et al. (2009) described a new species of the Podonominae genus Parochlus Enderlein. Several aspects of the abovementioned contribution concerning ecological and biogeographical aspects are discussed. The new temperature range proposed by the authors for this species is weakly supported by evidence and should be interpreted as tentative. The statement that this new record occurred in the Monte biogeographic province is erroneous. The type locality of the new species belongs to the Chacoan biogeographic province.

Rodríguez et al. (2009) describieron una nueva especie del género Parochlus Enderlein de la subfamilia Podonominae. Se discuten varios aspectos concernientes a aspectos ecológicos y biogeográficos de la antedicha contribución. El nuevo rango de temperaturas propuesto por los autores para dicha especie está apoyada en evidencias débiles y debería ser interpretada como tentativa. La aseveración que este nuevo registro se localizó en la provincia biogeográfica del Monte es errónea. La localidad tipo de la nueva especie pertenece a la provincia biogeográfica Chaqueña.

The male and female of the new species Metriocnemus puna sp. n from the Argentinean Puna are described and illustrated. A parsimony analysis including 24 well-described species of the genus plus the new species based on the adult male was conducted in order to access the phylogenetic position of the new species and to provide the first phylogenetic hypothesis for the genus.

The Chironomidae (Diptera: Nematocera) family is one of the most widely distributed group of insects and often the most abundant in freshwater environments. Representatives of this family can exploit a wide range of environmental gradients. The information here presented is based on the compilation of distributional data obtained from bibliography, the study of the type material deposited in the Natural History Museum (UK) and the collection material from Museo de La Plata (Argentina). Nine subfamilies are recorded from Patagonia, being the monotypic subfamily Chilenomyiinae endemic for the area. From the 111 known genera from South America, 53 are present in the studied area. Aproximately 20 % of the genera recorded from Patagonia are endemic and 7 of them have transantarctic relationships. In Patagonia there are 177 species of Chironomidae, out of which 98% are endemic, 3 % are considered nomina dubia and ca. 17 % requires revision since their systematic position is doubtful. The original descriptions of the chironomid species from Patagonia are based mainly on males (n=58) and males and females (n=43) both amounting to 57 % of the total, the rest of the species have been described using different combinations of stages from their life cycle.

La familia Chironomidae (Diptera: Nematocera) es uno de los grupos de insectos más ampliamente distribuidos y abundantes en cuerpos de agua dulce. Los representantes de esta familia pueden explotar áreas con amplios gradientes ambientales. La información que se presenta está basada en la recopilación de datos distribucionales bibliográficos, del estudio del material tipo de las especies de Chironomidae depositadas en el Natural History Museum (UK) y del material de colección del Museo de La Plata (Argentina). En la Patagonia, se registran 9 subfamilias, la subfamilia monotípica Chilenomyiinae es endémica de esta área. Dentro de estas subfamilias, 53 de los 111 géneros conocidos para América del Sur están presentes en la Patagonia. Del total de géneros de la Patagonia, el 20 % es endémico y 7 de ellos muestran relaciones transantárticas. En la Patagonia, se registran 177 especies de Chironomidae, el 98% de éstas son endémicas, el 3 % son consideradas nomina dubia y el 17% requiere revisión ya que su ubicación sistemática es dudosa. Las descripciones originales de las especies patagónicas de Chironomidae están basadas principalmente sobre machos (n=58) y machos y hembras (n=43), ambas representan el 57% del total; el resto de las especies han sido descriptas con diferentes combinaciones de estadios del ciclo de desarrollo.
