Abstract This study evaluated the bioavailability of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Santos Bay (SB) and the adjacent Santos Continental Shelf (SCS) in Brazil. Biliary metabolites were measured in several fish species to establish a baseline for future monitoring programs. Bile samples from different species of fish were collected monthly from July to December 2005 in SB, and in August 2005 and February 2006 on SCS. Metabolite concentrations were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detectors. Naphthalene, phenanthrene, and benzo[a]pyrene metabolite concentrations ranged from 24 to 810 µg g -1 of bile, 1.8 to 68 µg g -1 of bile, and below the limit of quantitation to 1.3 µg g -1 of bile, respectively. Despite its high concentrations, the levels of naphthalene metabolites were in regions of low-contamination, while benzo[a]pyrene metabolite were in the same range as those reported in moderately contaminated areas, which may indicate pyrolytic contamination by PAHs. No significant differences in the metabolite concentrations were found between the SB and the SCS samples or during the periods of collection. Future studies with a single biomonitoring species should be conducted, considering age, sex, and feeding condition of the individuals. The metabolite data presented in this study is an important baseline information for this urbanized region, which hosts several sources of contaminants.

Abstract The abundance and movement patterns of lemon sharks ( Negaprion brevirostris) at Lama Bay, Biological Reserve Rocas Atoll, were reassessed by visual census. We considered tides and daylight periods to plan our observations during two expeditions in 2015. Using daily visual counts, the mean abundance of individuals was 29 in austral summer (maximum 35) and 31 in winter (maximum 41). The results indicated that the local lemon shark population might have recovered after 18 years of a substantial drop in mean abundance. In addition, the movement pattern of the species corroborated previous studies related to their fidelity to the birthplace. These results justify the need of continuous monitoring of lemon sharks over the course of time at Rocas Atoll using non-lethal and non-invasive techniques.

Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a estrutura da ictiofauna na região da desembocadura norte do Canal de Bertioga (São Paulo, Brasil) e os possíveis efeitos da perda da qualidade ambiental. As amostras foram coletadas mensalmente de setembro a dezembro de 2005, em duas estações oceanográficas, com rede de arrasto. A estrutura da fauna de peixes foi avaliada por indicadores ecológicos e a qualidade ambiental por curvas ABC e um índice de comunidades de peixes estuarinos (EFCI). Um total de 1553 indivíduos em 50 espécies foi amostrado. Ariidae e Sciaenidae totalizaram 60% e Cathorops spixii representou 36% de todos os espécimes coletados. Maior riqueza e diversidade ecológica foram registradas em dezembro, enquanto a maior abundância numérica foi encontrada em outubro. A maioria das espécies foi representada por juvenis. As análises de agrupamento e de correspondência canônica mostraram uma diferença consistente e clara entre as estações de amostragem, e os fatores abióticos analisados (temperatura, profundidade e salinidade) parecem não ter influência sobre a estrutura da comunidade. A curva ABC sugeriu um ambiente moderadamente perturbado e o EFCI permitiu classificar a área como "pobre", a partir das 12 métricas analisadas, que consideraram a redução da diversidade específica, a composição e a abundância, bem como a modificação na função de berçário/infantário e a integridade trófica da área. Futuros estudos devem se concentrar em analisar conjuntamente os indicadores químicos da água, do sedimento e os indicadores biológicos, para confirmar a condição da ictiofauna da desembocadura norte do Canal de Bertioga.

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the ichthyofauna structure in the region of the north outfall of the Bertioga Channel (São Paulo, Brazil) and the possible effects of the environmental quality loss. The samples were collected in a monthly basis, from September to December 2005, at two oceanographic stations with an otter-trawl. The fish fauna structure was evaluated by ecological indicators and the environmental quality evaluated by the ABC analysis and the Estuarine Fish Communities Index (EFCI). A total of 1553 individuals from 50 species were sampled. Ariidae and Sciaenidae amounted to 60 % and Cathorops spixii represented 36 % of all specimens collected. The highest richness and ecological diversity were recorded in December, while the highest numerical abundance was found in October. The majority of the species were represented by juveniles. The cluster analysis and canonical correspondence analysis showed a consistent and clear difference between the sampling stations, and the abiotic factors analyzed (temperature, depth and salinity) do not seem to have influence on the community structure. The ABC analysis suggested a moderate disturbed environment and the EFCI allowed classifying the area as "poor", due to the 12 metrics analyzed, concerning the reduction of the species diversity, composition and abundance, and modifications in the nursery function and trophic integrity of the area. Future studies should focus on jointly analyze chemical indicators of water and sediment with the biological indicators, to confirm the ichthyofaunal condition of the north outfall of the Bertioga Channel.

Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo é descrever o uso por peixes juvenis da zona rasa de praias arenosas do sistema costeiro Cananéia-Iguape, São Paulo, Brasil, analisando o período de ocorrência e o padrão de utilização das espécies mais abundantes na área. Utilizando uma rede de arrasto de praia (picaré) mensalmente ao longo de um ano, foram amostrados 13861 indivíduos, pertencentes a 57 espécies e 24 famílias. As espécies analisadas utilizaram a área estudada com diferentes finalidades: Atherinella brasiliensis foi amostrada em todas as fases do desenvolvimento gonadal e, portanto, considerada como residente, juvenis de Trachinotus goodei utilizaram as praias para o crescimento, enquanto os juvenis de Mugil curema e Mugil liza como rota de migração do oceano para o estuário. Nossos resultados mostraram a importância das praias arenosas para peixes juvenis, principalmente na primavera e no verão, quando a maioria dos juvenis recruta na área, e coincide com o período de maior impacto pelos turistas. Como muitas espécies analisadas são comercialmente importantes, ressalta-se ainda a importância de preservação desses habitats costeiros para um melhor manejo pesqueiro.

Abstract The purpose of the present study is to describe the juvenile fish use of the shallow zone of beaches of the Cananéia-Iguape coastal system, São Paulo, Brazil, analyzing its occurrence period and the patterns of utilization for the most abundant species. Using a beach seine monthly for one year, we sampled 13861 individuals, of 57 species and 24 families. The fish species used the study area for different proposes: Atherinella brasiliensis was sampled in all phases of gonadal development and considered as resident, juveniles of Trachinotus goodei used the beaches for growth and juveniles of Mugil curema and Mugil liza used the beaches as a route from the ocean to the estuary. Our results showed the importance of the sandy beaches for juvenile fish, especially in spring and summer when most juveniles occur and recruit. Unfortunately, this is the period of the most intense tourist activity. As many of the species studied are commercially important, this study highlighted the necessity of coastal habitat preservation for better fishery management.

Este inventário comentado da biodiversidade do litoral central do estado de São Paulo apresenta as espécies de peixes demersais e pelágicas da baía de Santos, do canal de Bertioga e da plataforma continental adjacente, entre Peruíbe e São Sebastião, da costa até 100 m de profundidade. Os exemplares foram capturados durante campanhas oceanográficas, utilizando-se redes de arrasto de fundo com portas, entre novembro de 2004 e fevereiro de 2006. Foram capturados um total de 56.095 indivíduos pertencentes ès Classes Chondrichthyes (três ordens e quatorze espécies) e Actinopterygii (quinze ordens e 141 espécies). Esta lista amplia em 27 espécies as explicitamente citadas para o litoral do estado de São Paulo, contribuindo para o conhecimento do grupo.

This biodiversity inventory of the central coast of São Paulo State presents species of demersal and pelagic fishes of Santos Bay, Bertioga Channel, and adjacent continental shelf, between São Sebastião and Peruíbe, from the coast till a depth of 100 m. Samples were taken during oceanographic campaigns using otter trawls, between November 2004 and February 2006. A total of 56,095 individuals were collected, belonging to the classes Chondrichthyes (three orders and fourteen species) and Actinopterygii (fifteen orders and 141 species). This list adds 27 species to those explicitly cited for the coast of São Paulo state, contributing to the knowledge of this group.

A família Sciaenidae apresenta elevada riqueza, abundância numérica e biomassa entre as famílias de peixe do litoral brasileiro. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar a composição, distribuição espacial e temporal bem como a influência da temperatura, salinidade e profundidade na comunidade de Scienídeos da baía de Santos. Um total de 29.306 indivíduos pertencentes a 13 gêneros e 21 espécies foram capturados, entre novembro de 2004 e dezembro de 2005, com Stellifer rastrifer representando 70,4% da composição total. Os maiores valores de abundância e biomassa ocorreram no lado leste da baía, e o número de espécies mais elevado foi registrado para a área próxima do canal de Santos. Esta estação também apresentou a menor similaridade com as outras áreas amostradas. Temporalmente em abril de 2005 foi registrada a maior abundância e em setembro de 2005 a menor. Os fatores ambientais que mais influenciaram a distribuição dos Scienídeos foram à profundidade e a temperatura.

The Sciaenids have among the highest species richness, numerical abundance and biomass of any family of fishes along the Brazilian coast. The aim of this study was to analyze the composition and spatial and temporal distribution of as well as the influence of temperature, salinity and depth on the sciaenid assemblage of Santos Bay. A total of 29,306 individuals belonging to 13 genera and 21 species were captured, between November 2004 and December 2005, with Stellifer rastrifer representing 70.4% of the total composition. Highest abundance and biomass occurred on the east side of the bay, and the highest species richness occurred near the mouth of the Santos Channel, which was also the site with least similarity to the other sites. Highest abundances occurred in April 2005 and lowest in September 2005. Key environmental factors influencing distribution of sciaenids were depth and temperature.

Existem poucos estudos no Brasil usando biomarcadores em Atherinella brasiliensis. No presente trabalho foram investigadas a presença de lesões histopatológicas hepáticas e as alterações nucleares em eritrócitos de A. brasiliensis amostrados na praia do Lamberto, local submetido à influência de resíduos domésticos e atividades humanas. Para comparação, indivíduos da espécie foram também amostrados na praia de Puruba, local não impactado, localizado no noroeste do estado de São Paulo. Peixes provenientes da praia do Lamberto apresentaram lesões hepáticas em número maior do que aqueles da praia de Puruba. Áreas necróticas, infiltração de leucócitos e núcleos picnóticos foram os danos de maior importância observados em A. brasiliensis, apesar de uma elevada ocorrência de vacuolização também ter sido verificada. O índice de lesão hepática dos peixes da praia do Lamberto mostrou valores significantemente maiores (Iorg=13) quando comparados com o dos peixes da praia de Puruba (Iorg=7), sugerindo influência das diversas atividades humanas existentes na área avaliada. Em relação aos núcleos "notched" e "blebed", foram observadas diferenças significativas entre as áreas, mas não para as alterações nucleares totais.

There are few environmental studies using biomarkers for the species Atherinella brasiliensis in Brazil. In the present work, the presence of hepatic histopathological lesions and nuclear abnormalities in erythrocytes were investigated in A. brasiliensis from Lamberto, a beach under influence of domestic wastes and marine activities. For comparison, fish were also sampled in Puruba, a non-polluted beach, located in the northeastern of São Paulo State. The frequency of lesions found in liver was in higher numbers in individuals from Lamberto than Puruba beach. The most critical injuries observed in A. brasiliensis were the presence of necrotic areas, leucocytes infiltration and piknotic nucleus. A high occurrence of cells with vacuolization was also observed. The hepatic lesion index of the fish from Lamberto beach showed significant high values (Iorg=13) when compared with fish from Puruba beach (Iorg=7) suggesting the influence of the several human activities in the studied site. Notched and blebed nucleous were observed in this study, and significant differences were found between the studied sites. However, these differences did not reflect the total nuclear alterations.

A estrutura e dinâmica da ictiofauna amostrada na região estuarina de Mataripe sob a influência da Refinaria Landulpho Alves-Mataripe (RLAM) foi analisada. Vinte estações foram amostradas com rede-de-abalo em cinco períodos: agosto e dezembro de 2003, março e julho/agosto de 2004 e em janeiro de 2005. Foi verificada a ocorrência de 35 espécies de actinopterígios e uma de elasmobrânquio, sendo que Oligoplites saurus, Diapterus rhombeus, Lutjanus synagris e Scomberomorus brasiliensis ocorreram em todas as campanhas. Um total de 1368 espécimes, pesando 36,10 kg, foram capturados. A biomassa total da ictiofauna foi maior no lado leste da região estudada, especialmente nas estações próximas de coroas/recifes e fundos consolidados. Um padrão similar foi também observado para os valores de diversidade. De maneira geral, baixa equitatividade e diversidade foram observadas na área de estudo, possivelmente como o resultado da rede utilizada. Ocorreu a dominância de formas juvenis de Diapterus rhombeus em todas as campanhas exceto uma (julho de 2004), quando Cyclichthys spinosus foi a espécie dominante. Embora em pequeno número, a presença de carangídeos e espécies associadas a fundos consolidados foi observada durante todo o período de estudo. Apesar das limitações impostas pelo aparelho de coleta, o papel da região estuarina sob a influência da RLAM, durante os períodos amostrados, foi classificado como área de crescimento para a maioria das espécies, principalmente a carapeba (D. rhombeus), não oferecendo potencial pesqueiro, dada a ocorrência de indivíduos jovens e de pequeno porte. Evidência de desova iminente foi relatada para Pomadasys corvinaeformis em agosto de 2003, e de desova recente em março de 2004 para Oligoplites saurus, somando-se a indivíduos maduros ocorrendo em números não-representativos para uma avaliação em nível populacional.

The community structure and dynamics as well as some biological parameters of selected species of the ichthyofauna of the Mataripe estuarine region affected by the Landulfo Alves Oil Refinery (RLAM) were analyzed. Twenty stations were sampled with a gillnet in five different periods: August and December 2003, March and July/August 2004 and January 2005. Thirty-five actinopterygian species and one elasmobranch species were recorded, Oligoplites saurus, Diapterus rhombeus, Lutjanus synagris and Scomberomorus brasiliensis among them, on all the campaigns. A total of 1368 specimens, weighing 36.10 kg, were caught. The ichthyofauna total biomass was greater, in weight, on the eastern side of the study region, especially at the stations close to the shoals/reefs and the rocky bottom. A similar pattern was also observed for the diversity values. In general, low evenness and diversity were observed in the area studied, possibly as a result of the fishing gear used. D. rhombeus juveniles dominated in all but one of the samplings (July 2004), in which latter Cyclichthys spinosus was dominant. Carangids and species associated with consolidated bottoms were observed, although in small numbers, throughout the study period. In spite of the limitations imposed by the gear used for sampling, the estuarine area influenced by the RLAM was seen to play a role as a growth area for the great majority of species, especially the mojarra (D. rhombeus), but it offers no fishing potential due to the prevalence of young and small individuals. Evidence of imminent spawning was recorded for Pomadasys corvinaeformis in August 2003, and recent spawning in March 2004 for Oligoplites saurus. Further, mature individuals occurred in insufficient numbers to permit population level evaluation.

O objetivo do trabalho foi analisar a taxocenose de bagres marinhos do complexo baía-estuário de São Vicente, SP. As coletas foram mensais, no período de setembro de 2000 a agosto de 2002, em quatro regiões do estuário. Foram capturados 3.985 exemplares, pertencentes a cinco gêneros e seis espécies, totalizando 47.807 g. A espécie Cathorops spixii apresentou a maior abundância numérica com 1.569 indivíduos amostrados. No transecto I (próximo da região costeira) foi registrada a maior riqueza e no transecto IV (estuário acima) a maior abundância com 2.602 exemplares e peso de 26.236 g. Em março de 2002 registrou-se a maior abundância com 687 indivíduos e o maior peso ocorreu em fevereiro de 2002 (8.816 g). A salinidade da água de fundo, ao longo do período de estudo, variou entre 14 e 36 e a temperatura da água variou entre 19 e 30 °C. Na região amostrada foram capturados exemplares jovens e adultos, ocorrendo um predomínio de jovens, o que demonstra que esta área apresenta condições favoráveis para crescimento.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the taxocenose of marine catfish in the complex bay-estuary of Sao Vicente, Brazil. The sampling was done monthly from September/2000 to August/2002, in four places of the estuary. Were caught 3.985 individuals belonging for 5 genus and 6 species, totalizing 47.807 g. The specie Cathorops spixii showed the biggest plentiful with 1.569 individuals sampled. In the transect I (close to the coastal region), it was registered the biggest richness (6 species) and in the transect IV (upper estuary) the biggest number of individuals (n = 2.602) e weight of 26.236 g. In March/2002 were registered the biggest occurrence with 687 individuals and biggest weight in February/2002 (8.816 g). The bottom water salinity, in the time of study, changed between 14 and 36, and the water temperature varied between 19 and 30 °C. In the sample place juveniles and adults' individuals were caught, a mostly juvenile which demonstrates that of this place shows favorable conditions for growth.

Esse estudo apresenta dados sobre a reprodução de Abudefduf saxatilis, uma espécie habitante de costões rochosos no litoral norte do estado de São Paulo. Os peixes foram coletados com anzol e isca num total de 73 indivíduos, foram medidos, pesados, dissecados, seu sexo e maturidade gonadal foram analisados, primeiro macroscopicamente, depois parte desse material foi levado para confirmação microscópica. Censos visuais também foram feitos para observar a presença de ovos. Os resultados apontam para uma equivalência entre o número de machos e fêmeas na população, a primeira maturação ocorre entre 101 e 115 mm de comprimento total, a desova ocorre entre os meses de novembro a fevereiro em Abudefduf saxatilis e outubro a janeiro em Stegastes variabilis. O período reprodutivo de A. saxatilis está positivamente relacionado à temperatura do ar e amplitude térmica, mas o indicador ambiental mais provável de influenciar o ritmo reprodutivo é o fotoperíodo. Os censos visuais feitos com a transecção mostraram-se uma ferramenta confiável para encontrar o período de desova nessas espécies demersais que guardam seus ovos.

This study presents data on the reproduction of Abudefduf saxatilis, a rocky shore inhabitant at the northern coast of São Paulo State. A total of 73 individuals were collected using hooks and baits. They were measured, weighed and dissected, sex and maturation stage were analysed, first macroscopically, then part of the material was taken for microscopical confirmation. Visual censuses were also done for underwater observation of egg's presence. Results showed equivalence of males and females in the population, first maturation occurring between 101 and 115mm of total length, spawning period occurs from November to February for Abudefduf saxatilis and October to January for Stegastes variabilis. Reproductive period for A. saxatilis was positively related to air temperature and thermic amplitude, but the environmental clue most likely to influence this rhythm is photoperiod. Transects with visual census of males guarding eggs were also a reliable tool for finding reproductive period in these demersal, egg-guarder species.

Espécimes de Citharichthys spilopterus foram coletados no saco do Mamanguá entre março de 1990 e março de 1992 para avaliação de sua dinâmica populacional e reprodutiva. Os linguados apresentaram um gradiente crescente de abundância da estação mais profunda para a mais rasa. A média do comprimento total por estação oceanográfica mostrou uma tendência de relação entre maiores tamanhos e maiores profundidades. Os machos foram predominantes durante o período de estudo e nas menores classes de comprimento. Altos valores de fator de condição alométrico, relação gonadossomática e estádios mais adiantados de maturidade gonadal indicaram alto grau de desenvolvimento das gônadas em março e novembro. Análises histológicas mostraram fêmeas desovantes em março e maio nas estações próximas à boca do saco, e fêmeas desovadas com folículos pós-ovulatórios velhos e alta freqüência de atresia em estações rasas, sugerindo a migração para áreas rasas e protegidas após a desova. O comprimento de primeira maturação gonadal foi 117 mm de comprimento total. Podemos concluir que C. spilopterus completa seu ciclo de vida no saco do Mamanguá, desovando durante o outono (entre março e maio) e possivelmente também em novembro.

Bay whiffs, Citharichthys spilopterus, were sampled in Mamanguá Inlet between March 1990 and March 1992 for evaluation of its reproductive dynamic. Bay whiffs presented a crescent gradient of abundance from the deepest to the shallowest stations. The mean total length by oceanographic station showed a clear tendency of a relationship between bigger sizes and higher depths. Males predominated along the studied period and on the smallest length groups. Higher values of alometric condition factor, gonadosomatic relationship and spawning stage of maturity indicated a higher degree of development of the gonads on March and November. Histological analysis showed spawning females in March and May 1990 in the stations closer to the mouth of the Inlet, and spawned females with old post-ovulatory follicles and high frequency of atresia at shallow stations, suggesting a migration to shallow and protected areas after spawning. Length of first gonadal maturation was 117 mm TL. We could conclude that C. spilopterus completes its life cycle within the Mamanguá Inlet, spawning during autumn (March to May) and possibly November.

The monthly analysis of maturity stage frequency suggested that spawning of the grey triggerfish Balistes capriscus (Gmelin, 1788) is annual, total and occurs from November to February in the south of São Paulo State, Brazil. Size at first maturity is 169 mm for females and 200 mm for males. Condition factor estimated considering and disconsidering gonad weight (K and K') showed maximum values related to periods of higher frequency of females at advanced maturity stage. ΔK was higher in December, January and February, and was related to the maximum frequency of mature females. As K estimates the gonad condition it could be used as a maturity and breeding season index for this species. The gonadosomatic relation behaved the same as K values.
