Objective: To describe and compare measures of maternal depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress symptoms before and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in a Brazilian birth cohort. Methods: All hospital births occurring in the municipality of Rio Grande (southern Brazil) during 2019 were identified. Mothers were invited to complete a standardized questionnaire on sociodemographic and health-related characteristics. Between May and July 2020, we tried to contact all cohort mothers of singletons, living in urban areas, to answer a standardized web-based questionnaire. They completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD-7) in both follow-ups, and the Impact of Event Scale (IES) in the online follow-up. Results: We located 1,136 eligible mothers (n=2,051). Of those, 40.5% had moderate to severe stress due to the current pandemic, 29.3% had depression, and 25.9% had GAD. Mothers reporting loss of income during the pandemic (57.2%) had the highest proportions of mental health problems. Compared to baseline, the prevalence of depression increased 5.7 fold and that of anxiety increased 2.4-fold during the pandemic (both p < 0.001). Conclusion: We found a high prevalence of personal distress due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and a clear rise in both maternal depression and anxiety.

SUMMARY OBJECTIVES: The present study compared cardiorespiratory capacity between cirrhotic patients and healthy subjects. METHODS: Nineteen cirrhotic patients and 19 healthy subjects, paired by age and gender, participated in the study. Volunteers performed an incremental cardiopulmonary test with a ramp protocol, a ventilatory and metabolic variables were obtained and analyzed. The recovery was analyzed by calculating the time needed for 50% of oxygen consumption (VO2) recovery to occur as the median between the peak of the exercise and the end of recovery on the VO2 curve (T1/2). The VE/VCO2 slope were performed by the linear regression of ventilation (VE) and carbon dioxide production (VCO2) data. RESULTS: During resting condition, cirrhotic patients presented significantly higher levels of VO2 compared to healthy subjects. The VE/ VO2 and VE/ VCO2 values were significantly higher in the control group at the anaerobic threshold and at the peak of the test compared to cirrhotic patients. Time under effort was significantly higher for healthy subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Based on these findings, it is possible to conclude that liver cirrhosis can compromise the patients’ quality of life, mainly by inducing metabolic alterations which can impair functional capacity and lead to a sedentary lifestyle.

O exercício físico aquático na gravidez auxilia na diminuição da variabilidade da frequência cardíaca principalmente no terceiro trimestre gestacional. O objetivo do estudo foi verificar o efeito agudo do exercício físico aquático sobre a variabilidade da frequência cardíaca de grávidas no terceiro trimestre. Vinte e uma mulheres grávidas (31,18 ± 3,21 anos, 1,53 ± 0,05 m, 70,33 ± 17,61 kg, 27,87 ± 2,78 m2 kg-1) foram recrutadas. As voluntárias foram submetidas à uma sessão de exercício físico aquático e coletada a variabilidade da frequência cardíaca, antes e até 60 minutos após intervenção. A variabilidade da frequência cardíaca foi analisada no domínio do tempo e da frequência. Para procedimentos estatísticos a comparação da resposta da variabilidade da frequência cardíaca em função do tempo (repouso x momentos) foi utilizado o Teste de Análise de Variância de Medidas Repetidas (ANOVA) com o valor de p<0,05. Houve diminuição da modulação simpática, refletida pela baixa frequência, no domínio da frequência, em repouso inicial (0,08± 0,03 vs. 0,05±0,02, p<0,05). Por outro lado, observou-se um aumento da modulação vagal caracterizada pela alta frequência (0,17±0,02; 0,18± 0,04, p< 0,05) em comparação ao repouso. Em conclusão, os resultados sugerem que uma sessão de hidroginástica pode ser uma estratégia útil para melhorar a variabilidade da frequência cardíaca em mulheres de terceiro.

Chronic Aquatic physical exercise during pregnancy helps reduce heart rate variability mainly in women in their third trimester gestational. In this context, the purpose of the study was to assess the acute of aquatic physical on heart rate variability in pregnant women in their third trimester. Twenty-one pregnant women (31.18 ± 3.21 years-old, 1.53 ± 0.05 m, 70.33 ± 17.61 kg, BMI of 27.87 ± 2.78 m2 kg-1) were included. The heart rate variability of the volunteers submitted to a session of aquatic physical effort was measured up to 15, 30, 45 and 60 minutes after intervention. Heart rate variability was analyzed in the time domain as well as the frequency time. Heart rate variability response in function of time (resting x activity) was between compared using the ANOVA test with p<0.05. When comparing low frequency, in the frequency domain, a reduction of the sympathetic modulation was found (0.08±0.03 vs. 0.05±0.02, p<0.05) when to compare baseline condition. On the other hand, an increase of the vagal modulation was observed, characterized by the high frequency (0.17±0.02; 0.18±0.04, p<0.05). In conclusion, the results suggest that a session of APE can be to improve heart rate variability in pregnant women in their third trimester gestational.

OBJETIVO: Verificar a influência de diferentes sequências de exercícios no desempenho do número de repetições máximas em mulheres idosas. MÉTODOS: Doze mulheres idosas (65,7 ± 5,6 anos, 66,9 ± 9,5 kg, 1,56 ± 0,67 m; 27,4 ± 3,6 kg/m2) foram submetidas a diferentes sequências de exercícios no Treinamento Resistido. Na primeira visita, as voluntárias foram submetidas à anamnese, avaliação antropométrica e teste de 10 RM. Na segunda visita, foi feito um re-teste de 10RM. Na terceira e quarta visita, as voluntárias realizaram as duas sequências: SEQ A - supino horizontal, puxador alto fechado, rosca bíceps e rosca tríceps e, SEQ B - a ordem foi inversa. O desempenho foi medido pelo número de repetições em cada exercício. A fim de verificar as diferenças nos dados obtidos no desempenho em diferentes sequências e séries, foram realizadas medidas repetidas pela ANOVA two-way seguido do teste post-hoc de Tuckey. RESULTADOS: Os resultados demonstraram que o número de repetições de cada exercício variou significativamente entre as sequências nos exercícios de supino horizontal, rosca bíceps e rosca tríceps. CONCLUSÕES: A ordem dos exercícios realizada em uma sessão de treinamento resistido pode afetar o desempenho no número de repetições em mulheres idosas.

OBJECTIVE: Verify the influence of different exercise orders on the performance of the number of maximal repetitions in older women. METHODS: Twelve older women (65.7 ± 5.6 years, 66.9 ± 9.5 kg, 1.56 ± 0.67 m, 27.4 ± 3.6 kg/m2) underwent four nonconsecutive visits and two different orders of Resistance Training. At the first visit, the volunteers were submitted to anamnesis, anthropometric evaluation and a 10RM test. On the second visit, a re-test of 10RM was performed. On the third and fourth visits, the volunteers performed two exercise sequences: sequence A: bench press, latissimus pulldown close grip, biceps curl, triceps extension; for sequence B the order was inverted. Performance was measured by the number of repetitions in each exercise. To determine differences in performance for sequence A vs. sequence B, repeated measures were performed by two-way ANOVA followed by the Tuckey post-hoc test. RESULTS: The number of repetitions of each exercise varied significantly for the bench press, biceps curl and triceps extension between the exercise sequences. CONCLUSIONS: The order of the exercises performed in a resistance training session can affect the performance in the number of repetitions in older women.

ANTECEDENTES: A disfunção endotelial e a inflamação de baixo grau estão positivamente associadas a estados de adiposidade excessiva; entretanto os efeitos agudos do exercício resistido sobre estas variáveis ainda não estão esclarecidos. Avaliamos os efeitos agudos do exercício resistido sobre a reatividade vascular e sobre o perfil inflamatório em mulheres jovens. MÉTODOS: As participantes foram divididas em dois grupos: controles magras (n = 16) e aquelas com sobrepeso (n = 16). A sessão de exercício resistido consistiu de flexões unilaterais de cotovelo em cinco séries de 10 repetições (com 70% de uma repetição máxima). Avaliamos tanto no repouso quanto durante o período pós-exercício agudo a pressão arterial, a frequência cardíaca, o fluxo sanguíneo do antebraço (FBF) e a condutância vascular (CVF), as citocinas, os adipopeptídeos e a endotelina-1. RESULTADOS: O grupo com sobrepeso apresentou maior FBF em repouso (p = 0,03) e pós-exercício (p <0,001), enquanto a CVF foi maior somente após o exercício, aos 20 min (p = 0,02) e aos 40 min (p <0,001) . A vasodilatação endotélio-dependente durante o período pós-exercício foi maior no grupo Overweight em relação aos controles (p = 0,01). No grupo Overweight, a sessão de exercício resistido reduziu a interleucina-6 (p = 0,02) e a leptina (p <0,001) e o aumentou os níveis de endotelina-1 (p = 0,02). CONCLUSÃO: Concluímos que a sessão de exercício resistido provocou um incremento agudo da reatividade vascular basal e um aumento da vasodilatação endotélio-dependente com alterações concomitantes no perfil inflamatório e da endotelina-1 em mulheres com adiposidade excessiva.

BACKGROUND: Endothelial dysfunction and low-grade inflammation are both positively associated to states of excessive adiposity but reports on the acute effects of resistance exercise on these variables are still lacking. We evaluated these acute effects of resistance exercise on vascular reactivity and on the inflammatory profile in young women. METHODS: Participants were divided into two groups: lean Controls (n=16) and Overweight (n=16). The resistance exercise session consisted of unilateral elbow flexions for five sets of 10 repetitions at 70% of one repetition maximum. Blood pressure, heart rate, forearm blood flow, vascular conductance, cytokines, adipopeptides and endothelin-1 were evaluated at rest and during the acute post-exercise period. RESULTS: The overweight group had higher forearm blood flow at rest (p=0.03) and during post-exercise (p<0.001) while forearm vascular conductance was higher only during post-exercise, at 20 (p=0.02) and 40 min (p<0.001). Endothelial-dependent vasodilation was higher during the post-exercise period in the Overweight group compared to controls (p=0.01). In the Overweight group, the resistance exercise session reduced interleukin-6 (p=0.02) and leptin (p<0.001) but increased endothelin-1 levels (p=0.02). CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that the single resistance exercise session elicited an acute increment of baseline vascular reactivity and an increased endothelial-dependent vasodilation with concomitant changes in inflammatory profile and endothelin-1 in our tested women with excessive adiposity.

Objective to estimate medicine consumption during breastfeeding and the risk to the infant. Methods descriptive study, carried out in a Primary Health Care Unit with 130 infants. The data collection was done through a form with objective questions, analyzed in Epiinfo. Results 73 (56.0%) nursing mothers had used medication during breastfeeding. The most used drugs were antianemics (n=48, 66.0%) and analgesic/antipyretic drugs (n=11, 14.4%). The majority of the drugs consumed were compatible with breastfeeding (n=71, 97.2%), except for Phenobarbital (n=1, 1.4%) and Losartan (n=1, 1.4%. Conclusion it was evidenced that medicine consumption during breastfeeding was high among nursing mothers, but most of the drugs presented low risk, that is, they were drugs compatible with lactation.

Objetivo estimar o consumo de medicamentos durante a amamentação e o risco para o lactente. Métodos estudo descritivo, realizado em Unidade de Atenção Primária à Saúde com 130 lactantes. A coleta de dados ocorreu por meio de formulário com perguntas objetivas, sendo analisados no Epiinfo. Resultados usaram medicação durante a amamentação 73 (56,0%) lactantes. Os medicamentos mais utilizados foram antianêmico (n=48; 66,0%) e analgésico/antipirético (n=11; 14,4%). A maioria dos medicamentos consumidos era de uso compatível com a amamentação (n=71; 97,2%), exceto o Fenobarbital (n=1; 1,4%) e o Losartana (n=1; 1,4%). Conclusão evidenciou-se que o consumo de medicamentos durante a amamentação foi alto entre as lactantes, porém foi visto que a maioria dos medicamentos apresentou baixo risco, ou seja, eram drogas compatíveis com a lactação.

Os objetivos do presente estudo foram verificar diferenças de carga entre o membro operado (MO) e o membro não operado (MNO) e comparar a soma das ações unilaterais com as bilaterais em um teste de 10 repetições máximas (10RM), nos movimentos de extensão e flexão de joelhos, em indivíduos pós-reconstrução do ligamento cruzado anterior (LCA). Participaram do estudo vinte homens (37,8±5,7 anos; 179,2±4,9 cm; 87,1±7,5 kg) submetidos à reconstrução do LCA com autoenxerto em um segmento, testados em dois dias distintos na cadeira extensora e flexora. Utilizou-se o teste-t student dependente com p≤0,05 como nível de significância. Os valores encontrados para a o MO são menores em relação ao MNO (p<0,05), assim como, o somatório de carga unilateral é maior que a carga obtida bilateralmente, (p<0,05), em ambos os movimentos. Em conclusão, foi identificado o déficit bilateral para os dois movimentos analisados, assim como, diferença na força máxima entre o MO e MNO.

The aims of this study were verify the differences between the operated limb (OL) and non-operated limb (NOL) and compare the sum of unilateral actions with bilateral results following the test of 10 repetitions maximum (10RM) for the movements of extension and flexion of the knee in patients after reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Twenty men (37.8±5.7 years; 179.2±4.9 cm; 87.1±7.5 kg) who underwent surgery for ACL reconstruction with autograph in a segment were observed in two different days, in the movements of knee extension and flexion. A student t-test for dependent samples was applied. It was adopted level of statistical significance p < 0.05. The values found for the OL were smaller in relation to the NOL (p < 0.05), as well as the sum of unilateral load was greater than the bilaterally load (p < 0.05) in both movements. In conclusion, there were significant differences for the two movements analyzed and, for comparison between OL and NOL.

O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar o efeito das diferentes fases do ciclo menstrual (CM) no desempenho da força muscular em exercícios resistidos. Participaram do estudo nove mulheres saudáveis, fisicamente ativas, com idade de 27 ± 7 anos, massa corporal 58,2 ± 5kg, estatura 161,1 ± 4,7cm e IMC 20,4 ± 2kg/m². Todas apresentavam CM's regulares (28-31 dias), faziam uso de contraceptivos orais e eram experientes em exercícios resistidos a pelo menos oito meses. Para avaliação da força muscular foi utilizado o teste de 10RM na seguinte ordem: leg press 45º, supino horizontal, cadeira extensora e rosca bíceps. Os testes foram realizados nas três fases do CM: folicular (entre o terceiro e o quinto dia do fluxo menstrual), ovulatória (entre o nono e o 10º dia) e lútea (entre o 17º e o 21º dia). Para a análise estatística foi utilizada a ANOVA de medidas repetidas, os dados analisados no software SPSS 15.0 e o nível de significância mantido em 5% (p < 0,05). Não foram verificadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas nas cargas mobilizadas entre os diferentes períodos do CM em nenhum dos quatro exercícios avaliados. No exercício leg press foi verificado um incremento de 5% na força muscular na fase lútea. Nas demais fases e exercícios essas diferenças não foram observadas. Podese concluir que as fases do CM não influenciam o desempenho da força muscular nos exercícios resistidos, sejam eles uni ou multiarticulares, para grandes ou pequenos grupamentos musculares ou em diferentes segmentos corporais

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the different phases of the menstrual cycle (MC) on muscular strength performance in resistance exercises. Nine healthy and physically active women, aged 27±7 yrs, body mass 58.2±5 kg, height 161.1±4.7 cm and BMI 20.4±2 kg/m2 participated in the study. All of them had regular MCs (28-31 days), used oral contraceptives and had been experienced in resistance exercises for at least eight months. Muscle strength was evaluated with a 10RM test in the following order: leg press 45º, bench press, leg extension and biceps curl. The tests were performed in the three phases of the MC: follicular (between the 3rd and 5th day of menses), ovulatory (between 9th and 10th days) and luteal (between 17th and 21th days). ANOVA for repeated measures was applied for statistical analysis, data were analyzed in the SPSS 15.0 and level of significance was set at 5% (p<0.05). No significant statistical differences were observed in the mobilized weight between the MC periods in those four exercises. Regarding the leg press exercise, a 5% increment in muscle strength was observed on the luteal phase. In the remaining exercises and phases these differences were not observed. In conclusion, the phases of the MC did not affect performance of muscular strength in resistance exercise, both single or multiple joint, for large or small muscle groups or in different body segments

O catalisador nanoestruturado SiO2/ZrO2 foi preparado pelo método sol-gel e apresentou uma área superficial de 131,50 ± 14 m² g-1. As imagens de microscopia eletrônica de varredura mostraram que o catalisador apresentou partículas muito homogêneas de 250 nm de diâmetro. Este material foi aplicado na transesterificação do óleo de soja para a produção de biodiesel. A conversão do óleo em biodiesel teve um rendimento de 96,2 ± 1,4 % em 3 h de reação de transesterificação catalisada pelo material SiO2/ZrO2 (SiZr). O catalisador foi recuperado e reutilizado por seis vezes, mantendo uma eficiência catalítica de 84,1%.

Nanosized SiO2/ZrO2 catalyst with high surface area (131.50 ± 14 m² g-1) was prepared by the sol-gel method. The material presented highly homogeneous particles with an average diameter of 250 nm according to SEM images. It was applied in the transesterification of soybean oil for biodiesel production. The biodiesel conversion reached a yield of 96.2 ± 1.4 % after 3 h of transesterification reaction catalised by SiO2/ZrO2 (SiZr). The catalyst was recovered and reused six times, maintaining a catalytic efficiency of about 84.1 %.
