Abstract Aim: This study investigated the adaptations of football teams as hierarchically organised open systems. In this type of system, the collective and individual behaviours are characterised by consistency and variability, respectively. Methods: Five professional men's football matches in the under-20 category were analysed. The team's centroid as a measure of the system's macrostructure and the distance from each player to the team's centroid (a measure of the system's microstructure) were obtained from the players' x and y coordinates of displacement on the soccer field. Cluster analyses were run using Ward's minimum variance method with Euclidean distance. Results: (i) teams showed consistency and variability in their macro- and microstructures, respectively; (ii) there was a correlation between attack and defence patterns in most game sequences; (iii) goals were scored when teams modified their macro and/or microstructure. Conclusion: Football teams showed correspondence in attack-defense patterns with macro-consistency and micro-variability throughout the match. Despite this, there was no relationship between the foregoing patterns and game outcomes. Goals were scored after changes in the team's structure.

RESUMO O presente estudo examinou a informação que constrange a tomada de decisão dos bloqueadores no jogo de voleibol, referente à antecipação da jogada adversária. Foi investigado o papel da informação do voo da bola, que emerge da interação entre o passador e o levantador. No primeiro experimento foi feita análise cinemática da trajetória da bola para determinar sua influência na ação do levantador. No segundo experimento jogadores tinham que prever o local em que ocorreria o bloqueio, após assistir a dois tipos de vídeo que continham: (i) o voo completo da bola ou (ii) apenas o voo final da bola. Verificou-se que o levantamento ocorreu mais frequentemente para o jogador da posição 2, quando o levantador estava mais distante da rede (experimento 1). Adicionalmente, verificou-se que a informação de voo da bola e a posição do levantador guiaram a antecipação dos bloqueadores em algumas situações (experimento 2). Os achados sugerem que a informação do passe pode fornecer suporte para a antecipação de bloqueadores em situações específicas, nas quais o voo da bola seja caracterizado por grandes alturas.

ABSTRACT This study examined the information constraining volleyball blockers’ decision-making as they attempted to anticipate an opponent's shot. The role of the ball flight information emerging from the interaction between the digger and the setter was investigated. In the first experiment a kinematic analysis of the ball trajectory was run in order to determine its influence on setter’s action. In the second experiment players were asked to predict the block location by watching a video involving (i) the complete ball flight or (ii) only the final ball flight. It was verified that the setting occurred more frequently to the outside hitter when setter was far from the net (experiment 1). In addition, it was found that the ball flight information and the setter position guided the blockers anticipation (experiment 2). These findings suggest that the passing information can provide support for blocking anticipation in specific situations in which the ball flight was characterised by high altitudes.

O presente estudo investigou a tomada de decisão da trajetória da bola e da superfície de contato do pé com a bola no remate do futebol. Foram filmados 12 jogos de futebol de um campeonato amador na Colômbia. Participaram no estudo 150 jogadores do sexo masculino, com idade entre 17 e 38 anos, e experiência de prática neste esporte de, no mínimo, 7 anos. As imagens capturadas foram analisadas através do software TACTO, e as variáveis espácio-temporais consideradas para análise foram as seguintes: I) ângulo de remate; II) distância entre o atacante e o defensor (interpessoal), III) distância entre o defensor e a baliza (extrapessoal); IV) velocidade e variabilidade de cada uma dessas medidas. Essas variáveis foram analisadas em relação a situações de remates com trajetórias retilíneas e parabólicas da bola, assim como, com a parte interna e peito do pé. Os resultados revelaram que a escolha da trajetória da bola foi influenciada pelas variáveis ângulo de remate e distância interpessoal. Além disso, a escolha da superfície de contato foi influenciada pela variabilidade da distância extrapessoal. Concluiu-se que as escolhas da trajetória da bola e da superfície de contato do remate são influenciadas pela interação espacial entre os jogadores.

This study investigated the soccer players’ decision-making of kicking using different ball trajectories and different foot-ball contact surfaces. Soccer kick events from 12 games of an amateur Colombian championship were selected and analysed using TACTO software. Participants included 150 male players aged between 17-38 years possessing at least 7 years of experience. The spatiotemporal variables considered were: the angle of the kick, the distance between the attacker and the defender (interpersonal) and between the defender and the goal (extra personal), and also the velocity and variability of each variable. The analysis included rectilinear and parabolic ball trajectories shots, and inside of the foot and instep kicks. The results revealed that the choice of kicking using a rectilinear or parabolic trajectory was influenced by the angle of the kick and the interpersonal distance. Inside of the foot or instep kicks were chosen depending on the variability of the extra personal distance. The findings highlight that the choice of kicking using different ball trajectories and different parts of the foot is influenced by spatial interactions between players.

Este estudo investigou a tomada de decisão de virar do nadador a partir de variáveis informativas espaciotemporais. Para este fim, provas de 50 metros dos nados crawl e costas para homens e mulheres foram selecionados de uma competição de natação, e analisadas através do software Tacto. Os participantes foram 120 adultos de ambos os sexos com idades entre 20 e 70 anos. As distâncias da parede da piscina em que os nadadores iniciaram a viragem foram analisadas em relação à velocidade e à variabilidade de deslocamento, as quais foram divididas em quatro grupos adotando-se quartis como os pontos de corte. Os resultados mostraram que para todas as condições, os nadadores que apresentaram maior velocidade e menor variabilidade de deslocamento decidiram iniciar a viragem a uma distância maior da parede da piscina, e vice-versa. Além disso, a maior distância pareceu estar relacionada ao desempenho bem-sucedido. Estes resultados sugerem que os nadadores devem estar em sintonia com a informação espaciotemporal e espacial a fim de maximizar o seu desempenho.

This study investigated the swimmer’s decision-making process for turning, based on spatiotemporal informational variables. The men and women 50-metre front crawl and backstroke events were selected and analyzed using TACTO software. Participants included 120 adults of both genders aged between 20 and 70 years. The distance to the pool wall at which the swimmers initiated the turn was analyzed with regards to velocity and variability of previous displacement. These factors were split into four groups adopting, quartiles as the cut-off points. Results showed that for all conditions, the swimmers who showed a higher velocity and a lower variability of displacement decided to initiate the turn at a greater distance to the pool wall. Furthermore, the greater distance seemed to be associated with a more successful performance. These results suggest that swimmers should be attuned to spatiotemporal and spatial information in order to maximize their performance.
