ABSTRACT The Amazon region is one of the most pristine continental areas whose concentrations of atmospheric trace gases and aerosol particles are very low, mainly in the wet season. This study provides observational results of aerosol optical and radiative characteristics in situ as well as atmospheric columnar at a pristine forest in Central Amazonia. Spectral variation of the aerosol properties (aerosol optical depth [AOD], single scattering albedo [SSA], and asymmetry parameter [AP]) was evaluated using the AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET) data. The SSA values under natural atmospheric column conditions (AERONET) were compared to the SSA values calculated with in situ measurements. The values of shortwave aerosol radiative forcing (SWARF) on top of the atmosphere (TOA) and the surface (SUR) were estimated using the SBDART model and were validated with the AERONET values with regression analysis. SWARF had a high correlation to TOA (0.97) and SUR (0.92), including dry and wet seasons. Monthly, seasonal and annual mean values of SWARFTOA and SWARFSUR were negative while SWARFATM values were positive. SWARFTOA was -9.18 ± 2.80 W m-2 and SWARFSUR was -20.77 ± 5.04 W m-2 in the dry season, inducing a heating rate (HR) of 0.37 ± 0.13 K.day-1. This study showed that, for a long series of measurements, the effects caused by aerosols on the radiative flux in the pristine forest of Central Amazonia were of the order of SWARFTOA of -3.66 ± 1.59 W m-2 and SWARFSUR of -11.86 ± 2.35 W m-2 during the wet season.

RESUMEN La región del Amazonas es una de las áreas continentales más impolutas, cuyas concentraciones de gases traza atmosféricos y partículas de aerosol son muy bajas, sobre todo en la estación húmeda. El presente estudio proporciona resultados observacionales in situ tanto de las características ópticas y radiativas como de la columna atmosférica de los aerosoles en un bosque virgen de la Amazonia Central. Se evaluó la variación espectral de las propiedades de los aerosoles (profundidad óptica de aerosoles [AOD, por sus siglas en inglés], albedo de dispersión simple [SSA] y parámetro de asimetría [AP]) utilizando para ello datos de la Red Robótica de Aerosoles (AERONET). Los valores de SSA en condiciones naturales de la columna atmosférica (obtenidos de AERONET) se compararon con valores de SSA obtenidos de mediciones in situ. Se estimaron los valores del forzamiento radiativo de onda corta (SWARF) en el techo de la atmósfera (TOA) y en la superficie (SUR) con datos del modelo SBDART y se validaron con valores de AERONET utilizando análisis de regresión. Los valores de SWARF tuvieron una alta correlación con los de TOA (0.97) y SUR (0.92), incluyendo las temporadas húmeda y seca. Los valores promedio mensuales, estacionales y anuales de SWARFTOA y SWARFSUR fueron negativos, en tanto que los de SWARFATM fueron positivos. Los valores de SWARFTOA fueron de -9.18 ± 2.80 W m-2 y los de SWARFSUR de -20.77 ± 5.04 W m-2 en la estación seca, induciendo una tasa de calentamiento (HR) de 0.37 ± 0.13 K día-1. El presente estudio muestra que, para series largas de medición, los efectos ocasionados por los aerosoles en el flujo radiativo en un bosque virgen de la Amazonia Central fueron del orden de -3.66 ± 1.59 W m-2 para SWARFTOA y de -11.86 ± 2.35 W m-2 para SWARFSUR durante la temporada húmeda.

Resumo Este trabalho analisou o desempenho dos métodos de Brunt (1932), Swinbank (1963), Idso and Jackson (1969), Brutsaert (1975), Idso (1981) e Bignami et al. (1995) para estimativa da emissividade atmosférica para dados obtidos na região do Cerrado Campo Sujo, na baixada cuiabana. As estimativas foram comparadas com dados calculados pela equação do balanço de energia para dois períodos estudados, seco (maio a agosto) e chuvoso/úmido (setembro a dezembro) de 2009. Os métodos de Swinbank e Idso and Jackson, que levam em consideração apenas a Temperara do ar, obtiveram melhor desempenho durante o período chuvoso. Em contrapartida, os métodos que levam em consideração a pressão de vapor d’água e a temperatura do ar (Brunt, Brutsaert, Bignami e Idso) tiveram melhor desempenho durante a estação seca, sendo as equações de Idso e Brutsaert que apresentaram melhor desempenho para o local e período estudados, obtendo os maiores índices de concordância, e sendo assim, as equações mais indicadas para a estimativa da emissividade atmosférica para o local de estudo.

Abstract This study analyzed the performance of the Brunt (1932), Swinbank (1963), Idso and Jackson (1969), Brutsaert (1975), Idso (1981), and Bignami et al. (1995) methods to estimate atmospheric emissivity under grass-dominated savannas (known as campo sujo Cerrado), in the region of Baixada Cuiabana. The estimates were compared with data obtained by energy balance equation in two seasons, dry season (May to August), and wet season (September to December) of 2009. The Swinbank and Idso and Jackson methods, that consider only air temperature, show better performances for the wet season. However, methods that consider water vapor pressure and air temperature (Brunt, Brutsaert, Bignami and Idso) show good performances for the dry season. The Idso and Brutsaert methods show the highest index of agreement and are recommended to estimate atmospheric emissivity for the region.

Resumo As ações humanas têm contribuído nas mudanças térmicas nos ambientes urbanos em escala microclimática através de tipos de revestimentos que possuem propriedades de armazenarem e transmitirem energia. Umas das estratégias de melhorar termicamente as cidades é a implantação da arborização. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o efeito do sombreamento arbóreo na temperatura superficial e no fluxo de energia de diferentes coberturas urbanas nos períodos seco e chuvoso na cidade de Cuiabá-MT. Como referencial foi utilizado um local sem arborização com esses mesmos revestimentos. Analisaram-se dados de temperatura superficial, temperatura e umidade relativa do ar, coletados às 08h, 14h e 20h. Foi utilizada a técnica não paramétrica Bootstrap para as comparações das temperaturas superficiais. Os resultados apontam que os cenários arborizados apresentaram um “resfriamento” em relação as superfícies não sombreadas, indicando o papel de relevância do sombreamento arbóreo para a mitigação da elevação da temperatura, principalmente no horário da tarde, período que ocorreu as maiores diferenças de temperaturas superficiais média entre os cenários mangueira e sem arborização, com destaque no material asfalto com até 15°C de diferença no período seco. Nesse contexto cabe ressaltar a influência da radiação solar nos resultados das temperaturas superficiais e nos tipos de materiais construtivos utilizados nas cidades. Assim, este estudo conseguiu relacionar variáveis importantes para a caracterização do meio urbano local, sugerindo que a arborização nesse meio é fundamental para a mitigação da elevação da temperatura superficial.

Abstract Human actions have contributed to the thermal changes in urban environments on a microclimatic scale through types of coatings that have properties of storing and transmitting energy. One of the strategies of thermically improving cities is the implementation of afforest. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyse the effect of tree shade on the surface temperature and energy flux of different urban coverages in the dry and rainy season in the city of Cuiabá-MT. As a reference, a site was used without afforestation with these same coatings. Analyses of surface temperature, temperature and relative humidity were collected at 08h, 14h and 20h. The non-parametric Bootstrap technique was used for comparisons of surface temperatures. The results indicate that the woody scenarios showed a "cooling" in relation to the unshaded surfaces, indicating the importance of arboreal shading for the mitigation of the elevation of temperature, especially in the afternoon, during which time the greatest differences in surface temperatures occurred between the hose and non-afforestation scenarios, with emphasis on asphalt material up to 15 ° C difference in the dry period. In this context it is important to highlight the influence of solar radiation on the results of surface temperatures and types of building materials used in cities. Thus, this study was able to relate important variables to the characterization of the local urban environment, suggesting that the afforestation in this environment is fundamental for the mitigation of surface temperature elevation.

Resumo Albedo é a porção de energia solar refletida pela superfície terrestre, sendo assim, uma importante variável que controla os processos climáticos e energéticos sobre a Terra. Albedo da superfície está diretamente relacionado com as características dos materiais da superfície da Terra, tornando-se um parâmetro útil para avaliar os efeitos da substituição de cobertura do solo original devido à ocupação humana. Este estudo objetivou avaliar as alterações nos valores de albedo da superfície em função da conversão da vegetação em outras formas de uso do solo, e analisar a aplicabilidade do uso do albedo na delimitação espacial de classes de uso do solo em região de transição entre os biomas Cerrado e Amazônia. As medidas de albedo da superfície foram obtidas a partir de processamento de dados Landsat Thematic Mapper em sistema SIG e as informações de uso do solo foram obtidas usando imagem de alta resolução do Google Earth. Os resultados demonstram que ações antrópicas sobre a superfície, como desenvolvimento de lavouras e queimadas contribuem substancialmente para as mudanças no albedo de superfície, e que as estimativas de albedo a partir de imagens Landsat apresentam potencial para auxiliar na identificação e delimitação de feições de uso e cobertura do solo.

Abstract Albedo is the portion of energy from the Sun that is reflected by the earth's surface, thus being an important variable that controls climate and energy processes on Earth. Surface albedo is directly related to the characteristics of the Earth’s surface materials, making it a useful parameter to evaluate the effects of original soil cover replacement due to human occupation. This study evaluated the changes in the surface albedo values due to the conversion of vegetation to other land uses and to analyze the applicability of the use of albedo in the spatial delimitation of land-use classes in the transitional region between the Cerrado and Amazon biomes. Surface albedo measurements were obtained from processing of Landsat Thematic Mapper data in the Geographic Information System (GIS), and land-use information were collected using Google Earth high-resolution images. The results show that human activities such as the cultivation of crops and burning have contributed substantially to variations in the surface albedo, and that albedo estimates from Landsat imagery have the potential to help in the recognition and delimitation of features of land use and cover.

The Earth's atmosphere has a large number of small solid and liquid particles which differ in size, shape and composition. One of the most obvious characteristics of the phenomena of air pollution is linked to the occurrence of atmospheric aerosol. The research was conducted in a protected nature reserve, Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) Social Service of Commerce (SESC) Pantanal , at 111 m of altitude (16º39' S, 56º47' W) and is referred to here as SESC - Advanced Research Center of Wetland , located about 160 km from Cuiabá - MT. The sampling device consists of samplers fine and coarse particles, separating the fine fraction of the aerosol (dp <2.5 µm) from the coarse fraction (2.5 <dp <10 µm). In August 2012, concentrations of fine particles were up to nine times higher (up to 18 µg m-3) than that recorded in the rainy months of 2012 and 2013 (amounts around 2 µg m-3). The concentrations of coarse particles were up to three times higher in the dry season, compared to the rainy season.

Neste trabalho avaliaram-se os mecanismos de controle da evapotranspiração por meio da condutância do dossel, condutância aerodinâmica e fator de desacoplamento em floresta de Vochysia divergens Pohl (Vochysiaceae) localizada no Mato Grosso no Pantanal Brasileiro. Durante o ano 2007 foram estimadas as variáveis: evapotranspiração, condutância do dossel, condutância aerodinâmica e pressão de vapor d'água. O fator de desacoplamento foi 0,58 e 0,51 durante as estações úmida e seca, respectivamente, indicando que o controle exercido pelo saldo de radiação sobre a evapotranspiração é predominante. O desacoplamento entre a cobertura vegetal e a atmosfera durante a estação úmida foi semelhante a estudos em florestas tropicais. Estes resultados acrescentam uma dimensão importante para a compreensão das características desta floresta inundável reconhecida internacionalmente.

In this study the control mechanisms of evapotranspiration through canopy conductance, aerodynamic conductance and decoupling coefficient for aVochysia divergens Pohl (Vochysiaceae) forest located in the State of Mato Grosso in the Brazilian Pantanal are assessed. Over the course of the 2007 year, estimates of the following biophysical variables were made: evapotranspiration, canopy conductance, aerodynamic conductance and vapor pressure deficit. The decoupling coefficient was 0.58 and 0.51 for wet and dry season, respectively, indicating that the control offered by the net radiation on the evapotranspiration is predominant. The decoupling between the vegetation cover and atmosphere during the wet season was similar to studies in tropical forests. These results add an important dimension to our understanding on the characteristics of this internationally important wetland.

Pesquisas envolvendo o fluxo de energia no solo têm-se intensificado, a fim de que se conheça o comportamento geofísico do Pantanal. No presente trabalho buscou-se verificar a variação sazonal da condutividade térmica do solo no Pantanal Mato-Grossense, com a finalidade de contribuir para as pesquisas destinadas ao estudo do fluxo de energia no solo na região pantaneira. Os valores médios obtidos através da equação de Fourier mostraram que a condutividade térmica do solo no período chuvoso e seco foi, respectivamente, 8,69W.m-¹.ºC-1 e 6,65W.m-1.ºC-1. A variação sazonal da condutividade térmica do solo foi 30,68% maior no período chuvoso do que no seco, em decorrência da maior quantidade de água no solo na estação chuvosa. Observou-se também, que houve variação sazonal da temperatura do solo nas camadas estudadas, sendo maior no período chuvoso do que no seco, devido à menor incidência de radiação solar nesse período.

Research involving the flux of energy in the soil has been intensified in order to increase the understanding of the geophysical behavior of the Pantanal-Brazil. In present study was examined the seasonal variation of the thermal soil conductivity in the Pantanal for the study of energy flow in the soil to Pantanal region. The average values obtained by the Fourier equation showed that the soil thermal conductivity in the wet and dry seasons was 8.69 W.m-1.ºC-1 and 6.65 W.m-1.ºC-1 respectively. The seasonal variation of the thermal conductivity of the soil was 30.68% higher in the wet season than in the dry season due to soil moisture in the wet season. It was also noted that the seasonal variation of temperature in the soil layer was higher in the wet season than in the dry season due to a lower incidence of solar radiation in this season.
