ABSTRACT Introduction: The Band 3 is a red blood cell protein that carries the Dia and Dib antigens from the Diego blood system. The SLC4A1 gene encodes Band 3; Band 3 Memphis is a polymorphism of normal Band 3 and has two variants, but only the variant II carries the Dia antigen. Objectives: Describe the frequencies of the DI*A and DI*B alleles and the Band 3 Memphis among blood donors, sickle cell disease (SCD) patients and Amazonian Indians. Methods: A total of 427 blood samples were collected and separated into three groups: 206 unrelated blood donors, 90 patients with SCD and 131 Amazonian Indians. We performed DI*A/B, normal Band 3 and Band 3 Memphis genotyping, using the Polymerase Chain Reaction Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR–RFLP). Results: The frequency of the DI*A/DI*A genotype was 0.5% in blood donors and it was not found in other groups. The frequency of the DI*A/DI*B was higher in Amazonian Indians (33.6%) and the frequency of the DI*B/DI*B was highest in blood donors (92.2%). All 105 individuals tested were positive for the presence of normal Band 3 and of these individuals, only 5/105 (4.8%) presented the Band 3 Memphis mutation. Conclusion: We observed a higher frequency of the DI*B allele in blood donors and a low frequency of the DI*A/DI*A genotype in all groups studied. The Band 3 Memphis was found in a higher frequency in the blood donor group. Our findings highlight the importance of analyzing different population groups to gain a better understanding of the genetic association of blood group antigens.

This article derives from a study that investigated the reverberation of the ideas brought forth by the Main Education Project for Latin America and the Caribbean on educational and curricular policies for Brazilian, Chilean and Uruguayan elementary education. The methodological path was outlined based on documentary research, whose main documents for data collection were the statements, opinions and reports concerning the project. The study results indicated that: 1) this project has guided the course of educational reforms that took place in Latin American countries, such as Brazil, Chile and Uruguay; 2) the discussions and debates for the transformations of Latin American elementary education in the context of the project were based on a conception of education and development anchored in a humanist and educational perspective of labor; and, finally, 3) the 1980s were the foundation anddevelopment phase of the project's first activities, aiming to the quantitative expansion of elementary education, particularly in the number of enrollments, whereas the 1990s intensified the activities of the project with a major focus on the quality of education, via management and curriculum changes. The conclusion was that the ideas of the Main Education Project reverberated in the three countries studied as they have incorporated⁠—and still do⁠—the principles and objectives of the project in their respective educational and curricular policies, while engendering a kind of consensus among the educational and curriculum policies fostered in Latin America.

Este artículo surge de un estudio que investigó las repercusiones de las ideas producidas a partir del Proyecto Principal de Educación en América Latina y el Caribe en las políticas educativas y curriculares de la educación básica brasileña, chilena y uruguaya. El recorrido metodológico se planteó a partir de la investigación documental, cuyos principales documentos para la recolección de datos fueron las declaraciones, informes y reportes referentes al proyecto. Los resultados de la investigación indicaron que: 1) este proyecto orientó el curso de las reformas educativas que tuvieron lugar en países latinoamericanos, como Brasil, Chile y Uruguay; 2) las discusiones y debates para las transformaciones de la educación básica latinoamericana en el contexto del proyecto se sustentaron en una concepción de la educación y el desarrollo anclada en una perspectiva humanista y educativa del trabajo; y, finalmente, 3) los 80’s han sido la fase de fundación y desarrollo de las primeras acciones del proyecto, con miras a la expansión cuantitativa de la educación básica, especialmente en el número de matrículas, mientras que los 90’s intensificaron las acciones del proyecto, enfocadas, principalmente, en la calidad de la educación, a través de cambios en la gestión y en el currículo. Se concluyó que el Proyecto Principal de Educación tuvo sus ideas reflejadas en los tres países investigados en la medida en que incorporaron y aún incorporan los principios y objetivos del proyecto en sus respectivas políticas educativas y curriculares, generando algo de consenso entre las políticas educativas y curriculares impulsadas en Latinoamérica.

Este artigo é resultado de um estudo que investigou as repercussões das ideias produzidas a partir do Projeto Principal de Educação para a América Latina e o Caribe nas políticas educacionais e curriculares para a educação básica brasileira, chilena e uruguaia. O percurso metodológico foi delineado tendo como base a pesquisa documental, cujos documentos principais para a coleta dos dados foram as declarações, pareceres e relatórios referentes ao projeto. Os resultados da pesquisa indicaram que: 1) esse projeto orientou os rumos das reformas educacionais ocorridas em países da América Latina, como o Brasil, o Chile e o Uruguai; 2) as discussões e debates para as transformações da educação básica latino-americana, no contexto do projeto, fundamentaram-se em uma concepção de educação e desenvolvimento ancorada em uma perspectiva humanista e educativa do trabalho; e, por fim, 3) a década de 80 foi a fase de fundação e desenvolvimento das primeiras ações do projeto, com vistas à expansão quantitativa da educação básica, especialmente no número de matrículas, enquanto que a década de 90 foi intensificada as ações do projeto, com vistas, principalmente, à qualidade da educação, por meio de transformações na gestão e no currículo. Concluiu-se que o Projeto Principal de Educação teve suas ideias repercutidas nos três países pesquisados à medida em que os mesmos incorporaram e, ainda incorporam, os princípios e objetivos do projeto em suas respectivas políticas educacionais e curriculares, engendrando uma espécie de consenso entre as políticas educacionais e curriculares promovidas na América Latina.

Abstract Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was the responsible for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Because of its high transmissibility, allied to the emergence of some variants of concern (VOC), like Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron, the detection of these strains must be rapid and efficient. Among the tests available, the reverse-transcriptase polymerase-chain reaction (RT-PCR) is considered the gold standard test for COVID-19 detection, and the use of specific primers and probes can discriminate the different COVID-19 variants. In this study, we screened 317 individuals tested positive for COVID-19 from the municipality of Ponta Grossa (Paraná State, Brazil), from April/2021 to February/2022, aiming to identify the Gamma, Delta, and Omicron variants, by RT-PCR, using specific probes. The Gamma variant was detected from April/2021 to September/2021. The Delta variant was subsequently detected from August/2021 to November/2021. The Omicron variant was the unique strain detected from December/2021 to February/2022 and, because of its high rate of transmissibility, it caused a considerable increase in the number of COVID-19 infections. Mass testing is considered an important strategy for COVID-19 control and, the correct detection of new strains, could improve the knowledge about the virus´ behavior, permitting the development of drugs and optimized vaccines.

RESUMO Problemas de agendamento são tarefas da rotina operacional presentes nas empresas, que exigem uma solução ótima para apoiar a decisão. No entanto, esses problemas ainda não foram investigados com frequência na ciência florestal. Neste sentido, propôs-se descrever uma formulação matemática para a otimização da silvicultura sob restrição de agendamento da mão de obra/ sequenciamento das atividades (SSRRMM). Buscando o método mais adequado para solucionar este problema combinatório, comparou-se duas estratégias: i) Programação Linear Inteira (PLI) e ii) Simulated annealing (SA). Os principais critérios para avaliar o desempenho das estratégias foram fornecer soluções fáctiveis em tempo de processamento e custo final do projeto aceitáveis. A instância abordada é um problema real contendo 32 talhões e cinco atividades silviculturais programadas dentro de um prazo de 40 dias. Testou-se ainda três funções objetivo, definindo estudos de caso (S) para atender às decisões recorrentes dos gestores, minimizando: S1 - custo do projeto, S2 - makespan e S3 - utilização da mão de obra. Os resultados revelam um modelo robusto para apoiar o planejador florestal em tarefas a nível operacional. O PLI alcançou a solução ótima apenas para a minimização do custo do projeto (S1) devido à demora no tempo de processamento dos outros estudos de caso. Desta forma, destaca-se o SA como um método eficiente para solucionar o SSRRMM, fornecendo soluções satisfatórias em um tempo reduzido. Todas as funções objetivo se ajustaram adequadamente aos seus objetivos propostos. As funções de makespan e de uso da mão de obra aumentaram US$ 1.820,29 (S2) e US$ 2.146,39 (S3) em relação ao S1, respectivamente, para terminar o projeto mais cedo e reduzir a oscilação do uso da mão de obra ao longo dos dias. Diante dessas descobertas, sugere-se aos futuros pesquisadores incorporar outros desafios na tomada de decisão, envolvendo uma formulação multi-objetivo ou métodos para revelar novos insights dentro do manejo e planejamento florestal.

ABSTRACT Scheduling problems are tasks of the operational routine in companies, which demand an optimal solution to support the decision. However, these problems have not been frequently investigated in forestry science. Therefore, it was proposed to describe a mathematical formulation for silviculture optimization under scheduling restriction of the workforce /sequencing of tasks (SSRCMM). Seeking the most suitable method to solve this combinatorial problem, two strategies were compared: i) Integer Linear Programming (ILP) and ii) simulated annealing (SA). The main criteria to assess strategies’ performance were to provide feasible solutions at an acceptable processing time and final project cost. The instance approached is a real problem outlined in 32 stands and five silvicultural tasks scheduled within a 40-day deadline. Three objective functions were also tested, defining case studies (S) to attend to the recurring managers’ decisions by minimizing: S1 – project cost, S2 – makespan, and S3 – workforce usage. The results reveal a robust model to support the forest planner in operational-level tasks. The ILP achieved the optimal solution only for the minimization of the project cost (S1) due to the delay in processing time of the other case studies. Thus, the SA stands out as an efficient method to solve the SSRCMM by providing satisfactory solutions in a reduced time. All the objective functions fitted properly with their proposed goals. The makespan and workforce usage functions increased by US$1,820.29 (S2) and US$2,146.39 (S3) from the S1, respectively, to finish the project earlier and reduce the oscillation of workforce usage over the days. Facing these findings, it is suggested that future researchers incorporate other challenges in decision-making, involving a multi-objective formulation or methods to reveal new insights for forest management and planning.

Resumo Objetivo Avaliar possíveis relações entre o peso e altura de pacientes submetidos à artroplastia total do joelho com o comprimento, largura e área da fóvea do ligamento cruzado anterior, verificados na cirurgia. Métodos Um total de 33 superfícies articulares tibias proximais, obtidas nos cortes tibiais de artroplastia total do joelho de 33 pacientes, foram utilizadas no presente estudo. O ligamento cruzado anterior foi dissecado cuidadosamente e ressecado com bisturi delicado, para expor sua fóvea. Depois, a periferia dessa fóvea foi demarcada por pequenos pontos, com um marcador. Cada peça foi fotografada e as medições do comprimento, largura e área da fóvea tibial do ligamento cruzado anterior foram feitas com o programa ImageJ (National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, EUA). A análise estatística avaliou a correlação entre os dados antropométricos dos pacientes com as medidas da fóvea tibial do ligamento cruzado anterior. Resultados O comprimento, a largura e a área médios da fóvea tibial do ligamento cruzado anterior foram, respectivamente 11,7 ± 2,0 mm, 7,1 ± 1,4 mm e 151,3 ± 22,2 mm2. Houve relação estatisticamente significativa entre a altura dos pacientes e a largura da fóvea tibial do ligamento cruzado anterior. A largura da fóvea do ligamento cruzado anterior pôde ser predita pela fórmula: largura = 107 , 294 − 133 , 179 × altura + 44 , 009 × altura ao quadrado. Conclusão A altura dos pacientes pôde a prever a largura da fóvea tibial do ligamento cruzado anterior e, assim, pode ajudar os cirurgiões escolher o enxerto mais adequado para cada paciente, nas reconstruções do ligamento cruzado anterior.

Abstract Objective To evaluate possible connections between the weight and height of patients submitted to total knee arthroplasty (TKA), with the length, width and area of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) fovea, as verified during surgery. Methods A total of 33 proximal tibial joint surfaces, obtained from TKA tibial sections of 33 patients, were used in the present study. The ACL was resected with a delicate scalpel to expose the ACL tibial fovea. Then the periphery of this fovea was delimited with a marker pen by means of small dots. Each piece was photographed, and the ACL tibial fovea length, width, and area were measured with the ImageJ (National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA) software. Statistical analysis studied the correlation between anthropometrics data of the patients and the measurements of the ACL tibial fovea. Results The ACL tibial fovea length, width, and area were, respectively, 11.7 ± 2.0 mm, 7.1 ± 1.4 mm and 151.3 ± 22.2 mm2. There was a statistically significant relationship between the height of the patients and the width of the ACL tibial fovea. The width of the ACL fovea could be predicted by the formula: width = 107 . 294 − 133 . 179 × height + 44 . 009 × squared height. Conclusion The height of the patients may predict the width of the ACL tibial fovea, and therefore, may allow surgeons to choose the more adequate graft for each patient in ACL reconstruction.

Resumo Objetivo O objetivo deste estudo anatômico, foi analisar a possibilidade de transferir os ramos do nervo radial destinados ao músculo supinador para reinervar o nervo interósseo posterior (NIP), que se origina das raízes C7-T1. Métodos Foram dissecados 30 membros de 15 cadáveres, todos do sexo masculino, preparados por injeção intra-arterial de uma solução de glicerina e formol a 10%. Resultados Em todos os membros dissecados, encontramos pelo menos um ramo destinado a cada uma das cabeças - superficial e profunda - do músculo supinador. Esses tiveram origem no NIP. Identificamos, proximal à arcada de Frohse, umramo para o supinador em seis membros; 2 ramos para o supinador em 11 membros e 3 ramos em 4 membros. Em dois membros, apenas um ramo desprendia-se do NIP, mas se duplicava proximalmente à arcada de Frohse. Em sete membros, não identificamos ramos para o supinador proximal à arcada de Frohse. Os ramos destinados ao músculo supinador foram seccionados na junção neuromuscular, podendo ser conectados sem tensão ao NIP. O diâmetro somado dos ramos destinados ao músculo supinador correspondeu, em média, a 53,5% do diâmetro do NIP. Conclusão Este estudo anatômico mostra que ramos do nervo radial destinados ao músculo supinador podem ser transferidos diretamente para o NIP semtensão para restaurar a extensão do polegar e dos dedos em pacientes com lesões de plexo braquial C7-T1.

Abstract Objective The purpose of this anatomical study was to analyze the possibility of transferring radial nerve branches to the supinator muscle to reinnervate the posterior interosseous nerve (PIN) originating from the C7-T1 roots. Methods Thirty members of 15 cadavers, all male, prepared with an intra-arterial glycerol and formaldehyde solution injection, were dissected. Results All dissected limbs presented at least one branch intended for the superficial and the deep heads of the supinatormuscle. These branches originated fromthe PIN. A branch to the supinator muscle, proximal to the arcade of Frohse, was identified in six members. In addition, 2 and 3 branches to the supinator muscle were found in 11 and 4 members, respectively. In two limbs, only one branch detached from the PIN, but it duplicated itself proximal to the arcade of Frohse. Seven limbs had no branches to the supinatormuscle at the region proximal to the arcade of Frohse. The branches destined for the supinator muscle were sectioned at the neuromuscular junction for connection with no tension to the PIN. The combined diameter of the branches for the supinator muscle corresponded, on average, to 53.5% of the PIN diameter. Conclusion The radial nerve branches intended for the supinator muscle can be transferred, with no tension, directly to the PIN to restore thumb and finger extension in patients with C7-T1 brachial plexus lesions.

Resumo Este artigo apresenta uma medida alternativa de qualidade de vida (amenidades) calculada a partir do diferencial entre rendimentos e aluguéis nas microrregiões do Brasil baseados nos microdados do Censo 2010. O artigo mostra que o custo com aluguéis aumentam de maneira quase linear com o aumento dos rendimentos. Os resultados do índice de qualidade de vida ajustado por características específicas dos domicílios e seus responsáveis indicam que as microrregiões mais pobres são as que possuem piores níveis de amenidades. Além disso, os resultados indicam que o valor das amenidades está relacionado com a localização geográfica.

Abstract This paper presents an alternative measure for quality of life (amenities) given by the housing-cost-earnings differentials for micro-regions of Brazil calculated based on microdata from the 2010 Census. The paper show that housing rentals and earnings increase in a nearly linear manner. The results for the quality of life index adjusted by housing quality and caracteristics of its tenant suggest that poorer micro-regions have lower levels of ameinities. Furthermore, the results indicate that the value of amenities is related to geographic location.

As coleobrocas são umas das principais pragas das palmeiras devido aos seus danos diretos e indiretos resultarem na morte de diversas plantas. O levantamento populacional destes insetos é de extrema importância, visto a necessidade de se manejar adequadamente o controle realizado na área. Este estudo teve como objetivo monitorar a flutuação populacional de Rhynchophorus palmarum em plantios comerciais de Elaeis guineensis Jacq. e E. oleífera (HBK) Cortes, no estado do Amazonas. Foram distribuídas armadilhas iscadas com roletes de cana-de-açúcar e feromônio de agregação para captura de insetos no entorno do plantio, na Estação Experimental do Rio Urubu, localizada no município de Rio Preto da Eva - AM e pertencente ao Centro de Pesquisa Agroflorestal da Amazônia - Embrapa (CPAA). Os dados das coletas foram avaliados quanto à captura anual de 2005 a 2009, a captura mensal e quanto à frequência de captura. Comparando os anos, verificou-se que a maior quantidade de insetos coletados foi em 2005, sendo observada uma redução das capturas até o ano de 2007, voltando a apresentar um aumento em 2008 e 2009 (P < 0,05). Não houve diferença quando comparadaa flutuação populacional nos meses (P> 0,05). Aproximadamente 40% das coletas não ultrapassaram quatro insetos, sendo observado comportamento semelhante na frequência de captura dos anos estudados.

The borers are one of the main pests of palms due to their direct and indirect damages which may result in plant death. The population survey of this insect is important in order to properly handle its control. This study aimed to monitor the population dynamic of Rhynchophorus palmarum in commercial plantations of Elaeis guineensis Jacq. and E. oleifera (HBK) Cortes, in the Amazonas State. For capturing insects, baited traps containing pieces of sugarcane stalk and aggregation pheromone were distributed around the plantation, in the Experimental Station of Rio Urubu, Rio Preto da Eva, AM, Brazil. The data were evaluated for the annual (2005 to 2009) incidence of insects, monthly incidence and frequency of capture. Comparing the years, it was found that the largest amount of insects collected was in 2005, being observed a reduction in captured insects by 2007, then the amount of captured insects increased in 2008 and 2009. For months within a given year no difference was found on the population dynamic of this insect (P > 0,05). Approximately 40% of the collections exceeded four insects, being observed similar behavior in the capture frequency of years studied.

Resumo: A micromorfologia é uma técnica de estudo de amostras não deformadas de solos e de rochas que permite, com a ajuda de técnicas microscópicas e ultramicroscópicas, identificar os constituintes elementares e as diversas associações destes (esqueleto, plasma, nódulos, poros), além de permitir precisar suas relações mútuas no espaço e, muitas vezes, no tempo. Para o preparo de uma lâmina é necessário a coleta do material em campo, impregnação com resina para seu endurecimento e a posterior laminação. Com as respectivas lâminas prontas realiza-se a descrição micromorfológica de cada amostra coletada. O presente estudo tem como objetivo contribuir, através da análise micromorfológica, no entendimento das características geológicas e geotécnicas de um perfil de alteração de um cambissolo. A análise dos dados micromorfológicos permitiu auxiliar o entendimento do sistema de percolação de água nos diversos horizontes estudados. O horizonte C é o destacadamente mais arenoso entre os materiais analisados e a condutividade hidráulica é semelhante ao dos demais horizontes estudados. Pode-se justificar esse fato pela análise das laminas de micromorfologia, onde se verificou que os poros deste horizonte não são conectados, dificultando a circulação da água livremente. Com isso, pode-se concluir que a micromorfologia pode ser uma ferramenta importante para a compreensão de características geológico-geotécnicas de solos.

Abstract: The micromorphology is a ultramicroscopic and microscopy technique applicable for grounds and rocks studies in order to identify its primary components and their associations: skeleton, shapes, nodules and hollows. Based on micromorphology it is possible to recognize the mutual relations of those components in space and time. After soil obtaining, a thin section with a resin application is prepared to provoke the hardening allowing the cut. This study has the objective to contribute for the knowledge of the geologic characteristics that can indicate the behavior of an alteration profile of Cambissolo (INCEPTSOL). The analysis of the data allowed to infer about the systems of water percolation in several soil horizons. Horizon C is more outstandingly rich in sands when compared to the other horizons, but the hydraulic conductivity is very similar to the others horizons. In the images of thin laminas can be verified that the pore presence is not interconnected and, therefore, prevent the free circulation of water. It was possible to conclude that the micromorphology is an important tool for understanding the geologic-geotechnics characteristics and help in the interpretation of the geotecnic behavior.
