Abstract We present an updated list of Orchidaceae species and their distribution data in the mesoregions of the state of Pará, Brazil, based on a systematic review of the literature and analysis of herbarium voucher specimens (and their labels) to confirm the occurrences of the species in the state. Our list has 434 species belonging to 98 genera; 209 species are endemic to the Amazon and 44 are restricted to the state of Pará. We also present 45 new records for the state. Catasetum, Epidendrum, Habenaria, and Maxillaria are the genera with the greatest species richness. Orchids were collected in all mesoregions of the state. Still, collections are absent in 21 of the 144 municipalities of the state, indicating the need for surveys and floristic assessments to understand the factors that influence the distribution of the species at the regional level and assist in conservation actions in the state.

ABSTRACT The Brazilian Amazon encompasses about 29% of the orchid species in Brazil. With the aim of contributing to the knowledge of the Amazonian flora, a taxonomic study of Orchidaceae was carried out in a forest fragment in the municipality of Capitão Poço, located in the Belém Endemism Center, the most deforested area in the Amazon. The fragment is locally referred to as Reserva São Geraldo Majela (RSGM) and is entirely surrounded by agricultural lands. Specimens were collected from February 2020 to April 2022 and deposited in the HCP herbarium, the analysis being complemented by consulting the collections of relevant herbaria. We provide descriptions and an identification key for the eight species of Orchidaceae recorded in RSGM, all of them showing a wide geographic distribution. Seven of them are epiphytes: Campylocentrum fasciola, Campylocentrum micranthum, Catasetum macrocarpum, Erycina pusilla, Notylia lyrata, Polystachya concreta, Rodriguezia lanceolata; and one is terrestrial: Oeceoclades maculata. These findings represent 65% of the previously recorded orchid species for the municipality of Capitão Poço and reinforce the importance of conserving the forest remnants in the region.

RESUMO A Amazônia Brasileira abrange cerca de 29% das espécies de orquídeas do Brasil. Visando contribuir para o conhecimento sobre a flora amazônica, realizou-se um estudo taxonômico de Orchidaceae em um fragmento florestal do município de Capitão Poço, localizado no Centro de Endemismo Belém, o mais desflorestado da Amazônia. O fragmento é denominado localmente de Reserva São Geraldo Majela (RSGM) e está totalmente circundado por matriz agrícola. Espécimes foram coletados de fevereiro de 2020 a abril de 2022 e depositados no herbário HCP, sendo a análise complementada por consultas às coleções de herbários relevantes. São fornecidas descrições e uma chave de identificação para as oito espécies de Orchidaceae registradas na RSGM, todas apresentando ampla distribuição geográfica. Sete destas espécies são epífitas: Campylocentrum fasciola, Campylocentrum micranthum, Catasetum macrocarpum, Erycina pusilla, Notylia lyrata, Polystachya concreta, Rodriguezia lanceolata, e uma é terrícola: Oeceoclades maculata. Esses achados representam 65% das espécies de orquídeas previamente registradas para o município e reforçam a importância de conservar remanescentes florestais na região.

Resumen: Antecedentes y Objetivos: Vanilla es uno de los géneros más conocidos de la familia Orchidaceae debido a los atributos ornamentales, medicinales y culinarios de algunos de sus taxones. El género es pantropical y tiene alrededor de 120 especies que se encuentran principalmente en el Neotrópico. El objetivo de este estudio fue informar la ocurrencia de V. karenchristianae en el bosque Atlántico brasileño. Métodos: Presentamos una descripción morfológica de V. karenchristianae con base en el análisis de la población recién encontrada en el estado de Bahía, Brasil, y en los materiales recolectados en otros sitios del país y depositados en herbarios. Además, proporcionamos comentarios taxonómicos y de hábitat, fotografías y un mapa de distribución de V. karenchristianae en Brasil. Resultados clave: El presente registro representa la distribución más oriental de V. karenchristianae y está aproximadamente a 2380 kilómetros de la localidad más cercana donde se ha registrado la especie. En Brasil, V. karenchristianae es actualmente conocida de los dominios fitogeográficos de Amazonía y Mata Atlántica y de solo cuatro localidades, incluida la que se agrega aquí. Conclusiones: Se necesitan más esfuerzos de registro para comprender completamente la distribución geográfica y los requisitos ecológicos de V. karenchristianae.

Abstract: Background and Aims: Vanilla is one of the well-known genera of the family Orchidaceae due to the ornamental, medicinal and culinary attributes of some of its taxa. The genus is pantropical and has about 120 species mostly found in the Neotropics. The objective of this study was to report the occurrence of V. karenchristianae in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Methods: We present a morphological description of V. karenchristianae based on the analysis of the newly found population in the state of Bahía, Brazil, and the materials collected in other sites of the country and deposited in herbaria. Also, we provide taxonomical and habitat comments, photographs, and a distribution map of V. karenchristianae in Brazil. Key results: The present record represents the most eastern distribution of V. karenchristianae and is approximately 2380 kilometers far from the nearest locality where the species has been recorded. In Brazil, V. karenchristianae is currently known from the Amazon and Atlantic Forest phytogeographic domains and from only four localities, including the one added here. Conclusions: Further recording efforts are necessary to fully understand the geographical distribution and ecological requirements of V. karenchristianae.

Apresentamos aqui um resumo das principais contribuições de Barbosa Rodrigues para Orchidaceae, a segunda maior família botânica do Brasil. Nós quantificamos a contribuição de Barbosa Rodrigues para o conhecimento atual da diversidade de Orchidaceae, consultando três importantes bases de dados botânicas: Flora do Brasil 2020, International Plant Names Index (IPNI) e World Checklist of Selected Plant Families (WCSP). Abstract The importance of Barbosa Rodrigues’ works for science is indisputable and their impact on the knowledge of the orchid flora of Brazil deserves a special mention. Here we present a summary of the main contributions of Barbosa Rodrigues to Orchidaceae, the second largest botanical family in Brazil. We quantified the contribution of Barbosa Rodrigues to the current knowledge of the diversity of Orchidaceae by consulting three important botanical databases: Flora do Brasil (2020), International Plant Names Index (IPNI) and World Checklist of Selected Plant Families (WCSP). Of the taxonomic names proposed by Barbosa Rodrigues, 265 are currently accepted, corresponding to 11 genera, two subgenera, four sections, one subsection, 246 species and one variety.
