ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the performance of students aged between in an auditory skills screening software program, considering the influence of biological determinants and the correlation of auditory tasks with the behavioral assessment tests of central auditory processing (PAC), as well as to present the cutoff points of the battery. Methods In the first stage, the sample consisted of 96 students with typical development, who underwent hearing screening at school. A self-perception questionnaire and the auditory tasks of sound localization (SL), temporal resolution (TR), temporal ordering of frequency (OT-F) and duration (OT-D), auditory closure (AC), dichotic digit- binaural integration (DD) and figure-ground (FG) were applied. Of these, 66 children participated in the second stage of the study, including basic and behavioral audiological assessment from PAC. Results The gender variable influenced the DD task to the right ear. Age influenced the outcome of five auditory tasks. The right ear performed better in the DD and OT-F tasks. At the age between 6 and 7 years, there was a correlation between screening and diagnosis in the tasks of AC, TR, DD, FG, and OT-F. At the age of 8 years, there was a correlation in the DD and OT-F tasks. The pass/fail criteria varied according to the task and biological determinants. Conclusion There was a correlation between screening and diagnosis in a greater number of tasks in the age group between 6 and 7 years. RESUMO Objetivo Analisar o desempenho de escolares em um programa de triagem das habilidades auditivas, considerando a influência de determinantes biológicos e a correlação das tarefas auditivas com os testes da avaliação comportamental do processamento auditivo central (PAC), bem como apresentar os pontos de corte da bateria. Método Na primeira etapa a amostra foi constituída por 96 escolares com desenvolvimento típico, que passaram pela triagem auditiva escolar. RESUMO Objetivo investigar a confiabilidade teste-reteste do programa AudBility em crianças com desenvolvimento típico de seis a sete anos. Método 29 crianças, sexo masculino e feminino, destros, falantes nativos do Português e desempenho escolar adequado para a faixa etária estudada de acordo com o professor foram submetidas aos procedimentos de meatoscopia, imitanciometria e foi aplicado o programa AudBility, composto por questionário de autopercepção e tarefas auditivas. As tarefas incluíram localização sonora, fechamento auditivo, figura fundo, escuta dicótica, resolução temporal e ordenação temporal de frequência e duração. O programa foi reaplicado com um intervalo de 1 semana sob as mesmas condições de avaliação. O desempenho em cada tarefa foi apresentado a partir de dados de tendência central e dispersão e a confiabilidade a partir do Cálculo do Coeficiente intra-classe (CCI), com base no intervalo de confiança (IC) de 95%. Resultados As análises demonstraram CCI positivo e significante para o questionário e tarefas auditivas, exceto fechamento auditivo, nas orelhas direita e esquerda e figura-fundo na orelha esquerda. O CCI médio do questionário foi de 0,742 e variou de -0,012 a 0,698 para as tarefas auditivas. Conclusão Com base no resultado médio e no limite superior do IC, os achados demonstraram concordância entre os momentos de grau bom para o questionário, e de grau bom a moderado para cinco das sete variáveis auditivas analisadas (CCI>0,05 e < 0,9). Os achados do estudo de confiabilidade representam um parâmetro importante de validação do programa para a faixa etária estudada.

ABSTRACT Purpose to investigate the test-retest reliability of the AudBility program in typically developing children aged six-seven years. Methods 29 children, male and female, right-handed, native Portuguese speakers and adequate school performance for the age group studied, underwent previous meatoscopy, immittance measurements and the AudBility program was applied, composed of a self-perception questionnaire and auditory tasks, being analyzed the abilities of sound localization, auditory closure, figure-ground, dichotic digits test, temporal resolution, and temporal ordering of frequency and duration. The program was designed and reapplied with an interval of one week under the same conditions. The performance in each task was presented from central tendency and dispersion data and was conducted using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), based on the 95% confidence interval (CI). Results The analyses showed a positive and significant ICC (p<0.01) for the questionnaire and auditory tasks, except for auditory closure, in the right and left ears and figure-ground in the left ear. The questionnaire mean ICC was 0.742 and ranged from −0.012 to 0.698 for the auditory tasks. Conclusion Based on mean results and upper limit of the CI, the findings showed agreement between moments, classified as good for the questionnaire and moderate to good for five of the seven auditory analyzed tasks (ICC>0.05 and <0.9). The results of the reliability study represent an important parameter for validating the program for the studied age group.

Abstract Introduction Otitis media (OM) is considered one of the most common reasons patients seek medical care in childhood. The fluctuating nature of hearing loss in cases of OM leads to irregular sound stimulation of the central auditory nervous system. Objectives To analyze the long-latency auditory-evoked potential (LLAEP) by verbal and nonverbal sounds in children with a history of OM in the first six years of life. Methods A total of 106 schoolchildren participated in the study, 55 females and 51 males, aged between 8 and 16 years, who were divided into 3 groups: the control group (CG), the bilateral experimental group (BEG), and the unilateral experimental group (UEG). All children underwent a complete audiological evaluation (audiometry, logoaudiometry and immitance testing) and an electrophysiological evaluation (LLAEP with toneburst stimulus - LLAEP-TB, and LLAEP with speech stimulus - LLAEP-S). Results Both study groups (BEG and UEG) presented a statistically lower performance (p < 0.005) when compared with the CG regarding all of the electrophysiological tests with the prolongation of the latency values and decrease in the amplitude values: LLAEP-TB (BEG: latency - N1, P2, N2 [females] and P300, amplitude - N1 and P2), LLAEP-S (BEG: latency - P2 and N2 [females], amplitude - P2 /UEG: latency - P2 and P300, amplitude: N1 and P2). Conclusion Children who had suffered secretory OM in the first six years of life and who had undergone myringotomy for the placement of a ventilation tube, either unilaterally or bilaterally, presented worse performance in their electrophysiological responses to verbal and nonverbal LLAEPs.

Resumo Introdução: A triagem do processamento auditivo central em escolares tem suscitado discussões na literatura, tanto em relação ao protocolo a ser usado quanto à importância de ações voltadas para a prevenção e promoção da saúde auditiva. Um desafio na audiologia é definir procedimentos eficazes na triagem do processamento auditivo central. Objetivo: Analisar as pesquisas científicas que aplicaram triagem do processamento auditivo central e discutir a eficácia dos procedimentos usados. Método: Foi feita busca nas bases de dados SciELO e PUBMed por duas pesquisadoras. Os descritores usados em português e inglês foram: processamento auditivo, triagem, audição, percepção auditiva, crianças, testes auditivos. Critérios de inclusão: artigos originais que envolveram escolares, triagem auditiva das habilidades auditivas centrais e artigos em português ou inglês. Critérios de exclusão: pesquisas com a população adulta e/ou neonatal, apenas triagem auditiva periférica e artigos duplicados. Após aplicação dos critérios descritos foram incluídos 11 artigos. Resultados: No âmbito internacional, os métodos de triagem do processamento auditivo central foram o uso do Screening Test for Auditory Processing Disorder e sua versão revisada, Screening Test for Auditory Processing, os checklists Scale of Auditory Behaviors e Children's Auditory Performance Scale e o Feather Squadron. No cenário brasileiro, os procedimentos foram a avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo e a bateria de Zaidan. Conclusão: No âmbito internacional, as baterias Screening Test for Auditory Processing e Feather Squadron se destacam pela avaliação mais completa das habilidades auditivas. Em âmbito nacional, há escassez de estudos que usem métodos que avaliem mais de quatro habilidades, com normatização para a faixa etária. A aplicação da avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo e questionários pode se complementar na busca de uma opção de fácil acesso e baixo custo na triagem auditiva escolar brasileira. Devem ser propostas ferramentas interativas, que possibilite triar o maior número possível de habilidades auditivas, validada por meio da comparação com a bateria de testes usados no diagnóstico.

Abstract Introduction: Central auditory processing screening in schoolchildren has led to debates in literature, both regarding the protocol to be used and the importance of actions aimed at prevention and promotion of auditory health. Defining effective screening procedures for central auditory processing is a challenge in Audiology. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the scientific research on central auditory processing screening and discuss the effectiveness of the procedures utilized. Methods: A search was performed in the SciELO and PUBMed databases by two researchers. The descriptors used in Portuguese and English were: auditory processing, screening, hearing, auditory perception, children, auditory tests and their respective terms in Portuguese. Inclusion criteria: original articles involving schoolchildren, auditory screening of central auditory skills and articles in Portuguese or English. Exclusion criteria: studies with adult and/or neonatal populations, peripheral auditory screening only, and duplicate articles. After applying the described criteria, 11 articles were included. Results: At the international level, central auditory processing screening methods used were: screening test for auditory processing disorder and its revised version, screening test for auditory processing, scale of auditory behaviors, children's auditory performance scale and Feather Squadron. In the Brazilian scenario, the procedures used were the simplified auditory processing assessment and Zaidan's battery of tests. Conclusion: At the international level, the screening test for auditory processing and Feather Squadron batteries stand out as the most comprehensive evaluation of hearing skills. At the national level, there is a paucity of studies that use methods evaluating more than four skills, and are normalized by age group. The use of simplified auditory processing assessment and questionnaires can be complementary in the search for an easy access and low-cost alternative in the auditory screening of Brazilian schoolchildren. Interactive tools should be proposed, that allow the selection of as many hearing skills as possible, validated by comparison with the battery of tests used in the diagnosis.

RESUMO Objetivo estudar a versão inicial de um novo programa online de triagem do processamento auditivo em escolares: “audBility”. A partir da aplicação em crianças com bom desempenho escolar, a pesquisa teve como objetivo específico analisar o desempenho em cada tarefa, nível de dificuldade por faixa etária, tempo de aplicação, gerenciamento dos dados e propor ajustes e melhorias para a versão final, a qual posteriormente deverá ser validada em pesquisas futuras. Método participaram 43 escolares com idades entre 8 e 11 anos e bom desempenho escolar. O programa avalia as habilidades auditivas de localização sonora, escuta dicótica competitiva (dígitos e dissílabos), integração binaural, figura-fundo, fechamento auditivo, resolução e ordenação temporal, além de um questionário de autopercepção direcionado aos escolares, baseado no instrumento “Scale of Auditory Behaviors .” Resultados o escore médio obtido no questionário foi de 44,75 ± 6,3 pontos. A partir do desempenho em cada atividade, foram realizadas melhorias no teste de fechamento auditivo e temporais; redução e definição do protocolo de pesquisa para adequar o tempo de aplicação. Observou-se a necessidade de dois módulos, divididos para crianças na faixa etária de 6 a 8 anos e de 9 a 12 anos, e o acréscimo de duas versões do questionário, direcionados para os pais e professores. Conclusão o desenvolvimento do audBility é um avanço na área do processamento auditivo e triagem escolar. A validação do audBility está sendo realizada com o aumento da amostra e comparação com a bateria diagnóstica. Os resultados iniciais possibilitaram o desenvolvimento da versão final do protocolo a ser utilizado no estudo de validação.

ABSTRACT Purpose To study an initial version of a new computer-based program for auditory processing screening of school-age children: “audBility.” Specifically, the study aimed to analyze performance in individual tasks, level of difficulty per age group, administration time and data management and propose adjustments for a final version to be validated in future research, based on the administration of “audBility” on children with good school performance. Methods Forty-three school-age children with good school performance were selected. The program assesses hearing skills related to sound localization, competitive dichotic listening, binaural integration, auditory figure-ground, auditory closure, temporal resolution and temporal ordering, as well as a self-perception questionnaire answered by the children. Results The mean score obtained in the questionnaire was 44.75 ± 6.3. Based on the analysis of performance in the individual tasks, improvements were made in the auditory closure and temporal resolution tests and also the research protocol was reduced and defined to adjust to administration time. It was identified a necessity of two separate modules: one for the age groups of 6 to 8 and other for 9 to 12 years, beyond the inclusion of two new versions of the questionnaire that can be answered by teachers and/or parents. Conclusion The development of audBility is an advance in the area of central auditory processing screening in school-age children. New researches for the validation of audBility are underway, with an increased sample and comparison with the diagnostic battery. The initial results enabled the development of the final version of the protocol to be used in the validation study.

Resumo Introdução: O processamento auditivo está relacionado a determinadas habilidades, como o reconhecimento de fala no ruído. O teste HINT-Brasil permite a mensuração da relação Fala/Ruído, porém, não há na literatura nacional estudos que estabeleçam parâmetros para a população infantil. Objetivo: Analisar o desempenho de normo-ouvintes, de 8 a 10 anos, nas tarefas de reconhecimento de fala no ruído, por meio do teste HINT. Método: Avaliados 60 escolares, entre 8 e 10 anos, de ambos os gêneros, sem queixas auditivas e escolares, e com resultados dentro da normalidade para a Avaliação Audiológica Básica e o Teste Dicótico de Dígitos. O teste HINT-Brasil foi aplicado com fones de ouvido, sendo pesquisada a relação Fala/Ruído nas condições Ruído Frontal, Ruído à Direita e Ruído à Esquerda. O software calculou o Ruído Composto, que corresponde à média ponderada das condições testadas. Resultados: Não houve diferença estatisticamente significante entre as orelhas, nem entre os gêneros. Houve diferença estatisticamente significante para as faixas de 8 e 10 anos, nas situações com ruído e para o Ruído Composto. A faixa etária de 10 anos apresentou desempenho melhor do que a faixa etária de 8; a faixa etária de 9 anos não apresentou diferença estatisticamente significante com relação as outras faixas etárias. Sugerimos os valores de Média e Desvio Padrão da relação F/R, considerando as faixas: 8 anos - RF: -2,09 (± 1,09); RD: -7,64 (± 1,72); RE: -7,53 (± 2,80); RC: -4,86 (± 1,31); 9 anos - RF: -2,82 (± 0,74); RD: -8,49 (± 2,24); RE: -8,41 (± 1,75); RC: -5,63 (± 1,02); 10 anos - RF: -3,01 (± 0,95); RD: -9,47 (± 1,43); RE: -9,16 (± 1,65); RC: -6,16 (± 0,91). Conclusão: O teste HINT-Brasil é um teste simples e rápido e não oferece dificuldades em seu uso com crianças normo-ouvintes; os resultados mostram se tratar de um teste eficaz para ser utilizado com a faixa etária avaliada.

Abstract Introduction: The auditory processing is related to certain skills such as speech recognition in noise. The HINT-Brazil test allows the measurement of the Speech/Noise ratio however there are no studies in the national literature that establish parameters for the child population. Objective: To analyze the performance of normal-hearing subjects aged 8-10 years old in tasks for speech recognition in noise using HINT test. Methods: Sixty schoolchildren were evaluated. They were between 8 and 10 years of age, of both genders, and had no auditory and school complaints, with results ranking within normality for the Basic Audiological Assessment and the Dichotic Digits Test. HINT-Brazil test was applied with headphones, with the Speech/Noise ratio in conditions of frontal noise, noise to the right, and noise to the left being investigated. The software calculated the Composite Noise, which corresponds to the weighted mean of the tested conditions. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the ears, nor between the genders. There was a statistically significant difference for age ranges of 8 and 10 years, in situations with noise, and for Composite Noise. The age group of 10 years showed better performance than the age group of 8; the age group of 9 years did not show statistically significant difference regarding the other age ranges. We suggest the values of mean and standard deviation of the Speech/Noise ratio, considering the age ranges of: 8 years - Frontal Noise: −2.09 (±1.09); Right Noise: −7.64 (±1.72); Left Noise: −7.53 (±2.80); Composite Noise: −4.86 (±1.31); 9 years - Frontal Noise: −2.82 (±0.74); Right Noise: −8.49 (±2.24); Left Noise: −8.41 (±1.75); Composite Noise: −5.63 (±1.02); 10 years - Frontal Noise: −3.01 (±0.95); Right Noise: −9.47 (±1.43); Left Noise: −9.16 (±1.65); Composite Noise: −6.16 (±0.91). Conclusion: HINT-Brazil test is a simple and fast test, and is not difficult to performed with normal-hearing children. The results confirm that it is an efficient test to be used with the age range evaluated.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar o desempenho auditivo de escolares na avaliação audiológica básica e, posteriormente, nos casos de integridade das vias auditivas periféricas, avaliar e comparar o desempenho de crianças com bom desempenho escolar (GC) e desempenho escolar insatisfatório (GE), na habilidade auditiva de integração binaural. Métodos Estudo do tipo transversal e descritivo. Foram realizadas anamnese, avaliação audiológica básica e teste dicótico de dígitos (TDD). A amostra foi composta, inicialmente, por 63 crianças no GE e 61 no GC. Os critérios de inclusão para avaliação audiológica básica para ambos os grupos, foram: escolares na faixa etária de 8 a 10 anos, falantes nativos do Português Brasileiro, com compreensão adequada às instruções fornecidas. Resultados Os grupos foram homogêneos quanto à faixa etária e heterogêneos em relação ao gênero, com mais meninos no GE e meninas no GC. As informações da anamnese revelaram que as crianças do GE apresentaram pior comportamento auditivo de escuta em ambiente ruidoso, atenção e agitação, na percepção dos responsáveis. Na avaliação auditiva periférica, houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os grupos, sendo que o GE apresentou perda auditiva e/ou alteração de orelha média em um número maior de crianças. No TDD, foram encontradas diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os grupos, demonstrando que escolares com rendimento escolar insatisfatório tiveram pior desempenho na tarefa de integração binaural. Conclusão Crianças com rendimento escolar insatisfatório apresentaram pior desempenho auditivo periférico e na habilidade de figura-fundo para sons verbais. Desta forma, programas de saúde auditiva devem incluir procedimentos da avaliação audiológica básica e do processamento auditivo central.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the auditory performance of students in basic audiological evaluation, and later, in cases of integrity of the peripheral auditory pathways, to evaluate and compare the performance of children with good school performance (GC) and unsatisfactory school performance (GE) in binaural integration task. Methods Cross-sectional and descriptive study. Anamnesis, basic audiological evaluation, and Dichotic Digits Test (DDT) were performed. The sample consisted initially of 63 children in the GE and 61 in the GC. The inclusion criteria for basic audiological evaluation for both groups were: schoolchildren aged from 8 to 10 years, native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese, with adequate understanding of the instructions provided. Results The groups were homogeneous regarding age and heterogeneous regarding gender, with more boys in GE and girls in GC. Children of the GE presented worse hearing behavior in noisy environment, attention and agitation, in the perception of guardians. In the peripheral auditory evaluation, there was a statistically significant difference between the groups. GE presented hearing loss and/or alteration of the middle ear in a larger number of children. In DDT, statistically significant differences were found between the groups, the GE presented worse performance in the task of binaural integration. Conclusion Children with unsatisfactory school performance presented worse peripheral auditory performance and figure-background ability for verbal sounds. Thus, auditory screening programs should include procedures of the basic audiological evaluation and the central auditory processing.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar o desempenho de escolares em uma bateria de triagem do processamento auditivo e comparar com um questionário de autopercepção. Além disso, comparar as respostas das crianças com questionário respondido pelos pais. Métodos Participaram 67 escolares com média de idade de 9,58 anos (±1,06), divididos em Grupo I (GI), composto por 40 crianças com desenvolvimento normal e bom desempenho escolar (23 meninas), e Grupo II (GII), composto por 27 crianças com dificuldades escolares (12 meninas). Foram realizados meatoscopia, imitanciometria, avaliação simplificada do processamento auditivo (ASPA) e questionário baseado no Scale of Auditory Behaviors. Resultados No total, 2 crianças do GI (5%) e 14 do GII (51,9%) tiveram desempenho alterado na ASPA. A tarefa de ordenação temporal para sons verbais demonstrou desempenho estatisticamente inferior do GII, em relação ao GI (p=0,001). No questionário, 14 crianças (35%) do GI e 23 (85,2%) do GII foram identificadas como risco para o TPAC (p<0,001). Houve correlação positiva de grau moderado entre desempenho na ASPA e o questionário (p<0,05). Na comparação das respostas das crianças e dos pais, considerando cada grupo separadamente, não houve diferença para o GI (p=0,894) e GII (p=0,239) e na amostra completa (p=0,363). Conclusão Ambos os instrumentos foram capazes de diferenciar os grupos estudados e identificar escolares que necessitam de encaminhamento para realizar o diagnóstico. A partir da análise de correlação, concluiu-se que a ASPA e o questionário devem ser utilizados de forma complementar, independentemente de serem aplicados com a criança ou os pais.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze the performance of school children in auditory tasks and to compare it with the self-perception questionnaire. In addition, it also aimed to compare the children’s answers with the same questionnaire answered by their parents and/or relatives. Methods A total of 67 children aged 9.58 years old on average (±1.06) participated in the study, having been divided into two groups. Group I (GI) consisted of 40 children with normal development and good school performance (23 females) and Group II (GII) consisted of 27 children with learning difficulties (12 females). The procedures applied included: meatoscopy, immitanciometry, auditory processing simplified assessment (ASPA) and a questionnaire based on the Scale of Auditory Behaviors. Results A total of two GI (5%) and 14 GII (51.9%) children had abnormal ASPA performance. The temporal ordering task demonstrated statistically lower performance of GII in relation to GI (p = 0.001). In the questionnaire, risk of CAPD was identified in 14 children (35%) of GI and 23 children (85.2%) of GII (p <0.001). There was a positive moderate correlation between their performance in ASPA and in the questionnaire (p <0.05). Comparing the answers of the children and their parents, considering each group separately, there was no difference for GI (p = 0894) and GII (p = 0239) and the total sample (p = 0.363). Conclusion Both instruments were able to differentiate the groups studied and to identify the schoolchildren who needed to be referred for a diagnostic evaluation. From the correlation analysis, it was concluded that both ASPA and the questionnaire should be used in a complementary way, regardless of whether they are applied to the children or their parents.

RESUMO Objetivo: analisar os resultados pré-cirúrgico da avaliação audiológica de crianças submetidas à intervenção cirúrgica para inserção de tubos de ventilação bilateral; analisar o tempo de permanência do tubo de ventilação e avaliar o processamento auditivo, após a intervenção cirúrgica. Métodos: 79 escolares, entre oito e 12 anos, foram divididos em dois grupos: 1 - 40 escolares sem antecedentes de otite média e 2 - 39 estudantes com histórico de otite média submetidos à cirurgia para inserção de tubos de ventilação bilateral. Todas as crianças foram submetidas à avaliação audiológica e avaliação do processamento auditivo. Resultados: na avaliação auditiva pré-cirúrgica todos os pacientes apresentaram resultados do tipo condutivo. O tempo médio de permanência do tubo de ventilação foi de 11,8 meses. A orelha esquerda apresentou desempenho estatisticamente inferior nos testes dicótico de dígitos e padrão de frequência. Os escolares do grupo 2 apresentaram desempenho estatisticamente inferior quando comparados ao grupo 1 nos testes Dicótico de Dígitos e Detecção de Intervalos no Ruído. Conclusão: as crianças com histórico de otite média nos primeiros anos de vida apresentaram respostas do tipo condutivo na avaliação pré-cirúrgica e respostas inferiores nos testes dicóticos de dígitos e Detecção de Intervalos no Ruido.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to analyze pre-surgical hearing evaluation in children who suffering from secretory otitis media in their first five years of age. Also to verify the length of time tubes have remained in the eardrum and analyze the test results of auditory processing after myringotomy surgery. Method: 79 students between eight and 12 years old were divided into two groups: 1 - 40 students without otitis media history and 2 - 39 students suffering from secretory otitis media in their first five years of age and who have undergone a myringotomy surgery. The individuals underwent complete audiological evaluation and assessment of Auditory Processing. Results: all patients showed conductive hearing loss in the pre-operative audiologic tests. The mean time of ventilation tubes was 11,8 months. The left ear showed significant lower performance in the dichotic digits and pitch pattern sequence tests. The students from group 2 showed lower performance whether compared to group 1 in the dichotic digits test and gaps-in-noise. Conclusion: children with a history of otitis media in the early years of life showed the conductive hearing loss responses in the pre-surgical evaluation and lower responses in dichotic test of digits and gaps-in-noise.

Resumo: Há consenso na literatura da importância do sistema auditivo para o desenvolvimento da linguagem oral e escrita. O Distúrbio do Processamento Auditivo refere-se à dificuldade no processamento de informações auditivas, não sendo devido à perda auditiva, nem ao déficit intelectual. O objetivo desta revisão sistemática da literatura foi analisar quais fatores ocorridos na infância e adolescência podem influenciar no processamento auditivo, não necessariamente sendo a causa ou consequência do distúrbio. Foram utilizadas as bases SciELO e PUBMed por duas pesquisadoras de forma independente. Os descritores utilizados foram: processamento auditivo; percepção auditiva; crianças; adolescentes, em combinações variadas. Dentre os 205 artigos identificados, 30 artigos corresponderam aos critérios de inclusão, sendo analisados. Apenas dois estudos demonstraram fatores positivos influenciando a habilidade do processamento auditivo: a influência da estimulação musical na infância e o uso de Metilfenidato, como tratamento doTranstorno de Déficit de Atenção e Hiperatividade. As influências são, em sua maioria, negativas ao processamento auditivo, destacando-se a relação do distúrbio com a dislexia, dificuldades escolares, distúrbio específico de linguagem, nível socioeconômico baixo, Transtorno de Déficit de Atenção e Hiperatividade, nascimento pré-termo, desvio fonológico, deficiência visual, respiração oral, gagueira, otite média, fissura labiopalatina, anemia, exposição ao mercúrio metálico, síndrome da apnéia/hipopnéiaobstrutiva do sono, acidente vascular cerebral, crianças em vulnerabilidade social e crianças disfônicas. O Processamento Auditivo mostra-se sensível as influências negativas de fatores ambientais, químicos, condições socioeconômicas, alterações de linguagem, auditivas, e neurológicas. A exposição à música e o uso de Metilfenidato foram os únicos fatores, com influência positiva nas habilidades do processamento auditivo.

Abstract: There is a consensus in the literature on the importance of the auditory system for the development of oral and written language. The Auditory Processing Disorder refers to the difficulty of processing auditory information. The aim of this systematic literature review was to analyze which factors occurring in childhood and adolescence may influence the auditory processing and that are not necessarily the cause or consequence of the disorder. Two researchers used the PubMed and SciELO databases independently. The descriptors used were auditory processing, auditory perception, children and adolescence, in various combinations. Among the 205 articles identified, 30 articles matched the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. Only two studies showed positive factors influencing auditory processing skills: the influence of musical stimulation in infancy and the use of methylphenidate as a treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The influences are, mostly, negative for the auditory processing, and we emphasize the relationship of the disorder with dyslexia, learning difficulties, specific language impairment, low socioeconomic status, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, premature birth, phonological disorders, visual impairment, mouth breathing, stuttering, otitis media, cleft lip and palate, anemia, exposure to metallic mercury, obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome, CVA, socially vulnerable children and dysphonic children. The Auditory Processing is sensitive to the negative influences related to environmental and chemical factors, socioeconomic status, and language, auditory and neurological disorders. Exposure to music and the use of methylphenidate were the only factors with positive influence on the auditory processing.

Objetivo Verificar se o estudo de música pode aprimorar a habilidade de compreensão de fala em presença de ruído. Métodos Participaram deste estudo 43 sujeitos de ambos os gêneros, com idade entre 18 e 33 anos, distribuídos em três grupos: o Grupo de Músicos, composto por 15 sujeitos com estudo formal de música; o Grupo de Intermediários, composto por 13 sujeitos com estudo informal de música e o Grupo de Não Músicos, composto por 15 sujeitos sem experiência musical. Todos os sujeitos encontravam-se dentro dos padrões de normalidade para limiares auditivos e condições de orelhas externa e média. Aplicou-se o teste de compreensão de fala no ruído, Hearing in Noise Test, na versão Português do Brasil. Os resultados foram analisados estatisticamente, pelos métodos ANOVA e Qui-quadrado. Resultados Todos os grupos encontraram-se dentro dos valores de normatização do teste. Não houve diferença significativa na análise dos grupos entre si. Na comparação dos resultados, de acordo com o gênero dos participantes, a única diferença observada foi entre os integrantes do gênero feminino dos grupos de Músicos e Intermediários, com melhor desempenho do grupo de Intermediários. Conclusão A experiência musical não influencia no desempenho, em relação à percepção de fala no ruído.

Purpose To determine whether musical practice improves speech comprehension in noisy conditions. Methods A total 43 female and male subjects aged between 18 and 33 years were distributed into three groups: the Musicians Group, comprising 15 subjects with formal music education; the Intermediate Group, comprising 13 subjects with informal music education; and the Non-musicians Group, comprising 15 subjects without musical experience. The participants had normal hearing thresholds and external and middle ear condition. The Hearing in Noise Test, Brazilian Version, was administered, and the results were analyzed by ANOVA and Chi-Square methods. Results The three groups were normal based on the test standards. There was no statistical difference between the groups overall. In the gender comparison, the only the female participants in the Musician and Intermediate groups differed, and the Intermediate Group performed better. Conclusion Previous musical experience did not influence speech in noise perception.

Introdução: O uso de equipamentos portáteis sonoros individuais pode ser um risco auditivo, pois o som é gerado diretamente no meato acústico externo. Acredita-se que fones diferentes proporcionam amplificações diferentes, pois causam variações de volume e de ressonância conforme suas inserções. Objetivos: Verificar a pressão sonora a que jovens estão expostos quando fazem uso de equipamentos sonoros portáteis individuais com dois diferentes fones: de inserção e de inserção anatômico. Materiais e métodos: Trata-se de uma pesquisa experimental. Para tanto, foram feitas medições em 54 orelhas de 27 jovens com idades entre 18 e 30 anos, com os dois tipos de fones. Também foram registrados picos de ressonância da orelha externa com e sem fone. Resultados: Observou-se que o fone de inserção anatômico apresenta aumento do nível de pressão sonora estatisticamente significante em comparação com o fone de inserção para todas as frequências avaliadas. Não há uma correlação entre o novo pico de ressonância do meato fechado e a frequência na qual se obteve os maiores níveis de pressão sonora com o fone. Observou-se diferença estatisticamente significativa entre orelhas para algumas frequências com os diferentes fones. Conclusão: O fone de inserção anatômico gera um maior nível de pressão sonora que o fone de inserção.

Introduction: The use of Personal Digital Audio Players can cause hearing injuries, as the sound is generated directly in the ear canal. It is believed that different types of headphones can cause different amplifications, since they cause changes in the volume and resonance of the ear canal according to their depth. Objective: This study aimed to determine the sound pressure to which young individuals are exposed when using Personal Digital Audio Players with two types of headphones: insertion earphones and anatomical insertion earphones Materials and methods: This was an experimental study. The probe microphone measurements were made with different headphones in 54 ears (27 young individuals). The resonance peaks were also recorded. Results: A statistically significant difference was observed between the evaluated headphones, showing that anatomical insertion earphones had higher levels of sound pressure than insertion earphones for all frequencies measured. There was no correlation between the resonance peak of the closed canal and the frequency where the highest sound pressure level was obtained. There was a significant difference between ears at some frequencies with the different headphones. Conclusion: It was concluded that anatomical insertion earphones generate a higher sound pressure level than insertion earphones.

Atriagem auditiva, a identificação e intervenção precoces da perda auditiva possibilitam um bom prognóstico para o desenvolvimento infantil. OBJETIVO: Analisar os resultados obtidos pelo Programa de Saúde Auditiva em neonatos que permaneceram em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva-UTI. MÉTODO: Estudo de corte transversal prospectivo. A amostra foi constituída por recém-nascidos, internados em unidade neonatal do CAISM/Unicamp, por pelo menos 48 horas, no período de 13 meses. O procedimento utilizado para triagem auditiva foi o Potencial Evocado Auditivo de Tronco Encefálico Automático-Madsen Accuscreen, próximo à alta hospitalar. As crianças que falharam na triagem foram encaminhadas para diagnóstico audiológico, otorrinolaringológico e genético. RESULTADOS: Fizeram a triagem auditiva 84,7% dos neonatos vivos, sendo realizada em 39,7% dos casos após 30 dias de vida. O diagnóstico mostrou que 63,8% das crianças apresentaram audição normal. A incidência da perda auditiva foi de 4%, sendo de 1,4% para perda do tipo neurossensorial, 0,24% com Espectro da Neuropatia Auditiva e 2,2% do tipo condutiva. CONCLUSÃO: Concluiu-se que a triagem auditiva neonatal não foi universal e nem aplicada, em muitos casos, no primeiro mês de vida. Deve ser realizada antes da alta hospitalar e em de mais de uma etapa. A incidência da perda auditiva foi elevada.

Auditory screening and early identification and management of patients with hearing loss improve the development prospects of infants. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the outcomes produced by an Auditory Health Program in neonates managed in an intensive care unit. METHOD: This prospective cross-sectional study enrolled neonates referred to the neonatal care unit at hospital CAISM/Unicamp with stays lasting for 48 hours and more within a period of 13 months. Automated monitoring of brainstem auditory evoked potentials was used in the auditory screening of neonates at the time of discharge. Children with poor BAEPs were sent to undergo audiological, otorhinolaryngological, and genetic tests. RESULTS: Auditory screening was performed for 84.7% of the live births; 39.7% were screened at 30 days or more of age. Diagnostic tests revealed that 63.8% of the children had normal hearing. Incidence of hearing loss was 4%; sensorineural hearing loss was observed in 1,4% of the subjects; 0.24% had auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder; and 2.2% had conductive hearing loss. CONCLUSION: Neonatal auditory screening was not offered universally, and nor was it carried out, in many cases, within the child's first month of life. Screening must be performed before neonates are discharged and in more than one stage. A high incidence of hearing loss was observed.
