ABSTRACT This work analyzed the world concentration of pellet exports between 2012 and 2018. Data on pellet exports from the Food and Agriculture Organization Of The United Nations – FAO were used as were the following indicators: Concentration Ratio [CR(k)], Hirschman-Herfindal Index (HHI), Theil Entropy Index (E), Gini inequality coefficient (G) and the Hall-Tideman Index (HTI). From the results, it was noted that there was an increase in the amount of world exports of wood pellets, with an increase from 9.71 x106 t, in 2012, to 23.67 x106 t, in 2018. There was dominance of the European continent over exports; at the country level, the main ones were: United States, Canada and Latvia. The indicators showed that pellet exports were, for the most part, concentrated and uneven. The continental and subcontinent levels showed the highest degree of concentration, however, as of 2016, there were signs of a possible deconcentration of this market. RESUMO Este trabalho analisou a concentração mundial das exportações de pellets entre 2012 e 2018. Utilizou-se os dados das exportações de pellets da Food and Agriculture Organization Of The United Nations – FAO e foram empregados os indicadores: Razão de Concentração[CR(k)], Índice de Hirschman-Herfindal (HHI), Índice de Entropia de Theil (E), Coeficiente de desigualdade de Gini (G) e o Índice de Hall-Tideman (HTI). ABSTRACT: This article analyzed the international competitiveness of exports of forest products from 2008 to 2018. The information is available in the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the indicators used were: revealed comparative advantage (RCA), trade openness index (Oi) and the contribution to trade balance index (CTB). Results showed that the exportation of forest products are competitive, in addition gains in competitiveness have been observed by the RCA and in Europe, countries had losses in detriment of the financial crises and austerity measures adopted. All countries showed a low degree of openness by the Oi and had a comparative advantage by the CTB, except for China and Germany. RESUMO Este artigo tem por objetivo analisar a competitividade brasileira das exportações dos produtos florestais, de 2008 a 2018. Os dados de importações e exportações de produtos florestais foram obtidos da Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations – FAO e para mensurar o comércio internacional utilizou os indicadores Vantagem Comparativa Revelada (VCR), contribuição ao saldo comercial (CSC) e Taxa de Cobertura (TC). Os principais resultados mostraram que o Brasil possui superavit na balança comercial de produtos florestais, sendo as exportações de celulose o principal. O VCR brasileiro de produtos florestais foi classificado de moderada a forte e, entre os agregados de produtos florestais, a celulose foi forte, os painéis de madeira de fraco a moderado, papel e papelão fraco, madeira serrada de fraco a não expressivo e a madeira industrial e madeira para energia não expressivo. Por meio do CSC brasileiro de produtos florestais, todos agregados possuem vantagem comparativa, com exceção da madeira para energia. O TC brasileiro foi forte para painéis de madeira, madeira serrada, madeira industrial, celulose, sendo os mais expressivos em ordem decrescente, respectivamente. Conclui-se que as exportações brasileiras apresentam vantagens comparativas e tem competitividade no mercado internacional.

ABSTRACT This article aims to analyze Brazil’s global competitiveness in the exportation of forest products from 2008 to 2018. Data on importation and exportation were obtained from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations - FAO, while Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), Contribution to Trade Balance (CTB), and Terms of Trade (TOT) were the indicators used to measure international trade. The main results show that Brazil has a positive trade balance for forest products, mainly for wood pulp exports. Brazil’s RCA for forest products was classified as moderate to strong. As for the forest product groups, it was strong for wood pulp, weak to moderate for wood panels, weak for paper and paperboard, weak to nonexpressive for timber, and non-expressive for industrial roundwood and wood fuel. Based on Brazil’s CTB, all the forest product groups have a comparative advantage, except wood fuel. Brazil’s TOT was strong for wood panels, timber, industrial roundwood, wood pulp, in order from most to least expressive. In conclusion, Brazilian exports have comparative advantages and are competitive in the international market.

RESUMO: Este artigo analisou a concentração regional da produção de lenha nativa do Rio Grande do Norte - Brasil, no período de 1990 a 2017. As informações da lenha nativa foram obtidas da produção da extração vegetal e da silvicultura, disponíveis no Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE). Analisou a conjuntura, a distribuição espacial da produção de lenha estadual por meio os quartis e mensurou a concentração por meio dos indicadores: Coeficiente de Gini (G), Índice de Concentração Compreensiva (CCI), Índice de Herfindahl-Hirschman (HHI) e Razão de Concentração [CR(k)]. Os resultados mostraram que houve decréscimo de -2,76% a.a. na produção de lenha nativa estadual, partindo de 5.280 x10³ m³ (1990) para 777 x10³ m³ (2017). O quartil municipal revelou que a maioria dos municípios produz pouca lenha; apesar do G ter inferido uma desigualdade muito forte a absoluta para os municípios produtores de lenha e fraca a nula para as mesorregiões, já o CCI mostrou para os municípios que é não concentrado e as mesorregiões tem concentração regional; HHI corroborou com esta afirmação mostrando um mercado altamente competitivo para os municípios e microrregiões e concentrado para as mesorregiões produtoras de lenha; o CR(k) dos quatro maiores municípios foi constatada uma concentração moderadamente baixa. Conclui-se que a lenha nativa do estado do Rio Grande do Norte possui estrutura de mercado competitiva.

ABSTRACT: This paperexamined the regional concentration of native fuelwood production in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, between 1990-2017. Information on native fuelwood was gathered fromforestry activitiescollected by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). This studyanalyzed the current situation and the spatial distribution of the state’s fuelwood production by quartiles. The following indicators were used to measure market concentration: Gini Coefficient (G), Comprehensive Concentration Index (CCI), Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) and Concentration Ratio [CR(k)]. In Rio Grande do Norte, there was a -2.76% annual decrease in the production of native fuelwood, from 5,280 x10³ m³ (1990) to 777 x10³ m³ (2017). Classification of the municipalities by quartile revealed that most municipalities had low fuelwood production. The G inferred a very strong to absolute inequality for the municipalities and a weak to null inequality for the mesoregions.The CCI demonstrated no market concentration in the municipalities and a regional concentration in the mesoregions. The HHI corroborated the CCI by affirming the presence of a competitive market for the municipalities and microregions and a concentrated market in the mesoregions.The CR(k) of the four largest municipalities indicated a moderately low concentration. This study concluded that there is a competitive market structure for native fuelwood inthe state of Rio Grande do Norte.

RESUMO Diante da transição na estrutura energética mundial, com o deslocamento do consumo dos combustíveis fósseis para fonte renováveis e limpas, registra-se um aumento da demanda por biomassa florestal para fins energéticos, em especial os pellets de madeira, e as importações têm crescido nos últimos anos. Logo, este artigo analisou a concentração mundial das importações de pellets, de 2012 a 2018. Os dados de importações de pellets foram obtidos da Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations – FAO e para mensurar a concentração foram utilizados os indicadores: Razão de Concentração [CR(k)], Índice de Hirschman-Herfindal (HHI) Índice de Entropia de Theil (E), Coeficiente de desigualdade de Gini (G) e o Índice de Hall-Tideman (HTI). Os resultados apontaram um crescimento de 16,67% a.a. da importação mundial de pellets, saindo de 8,76 milhões toneladas (t), em 2012, para 22,15 milhões de t em 2018. Quanto aos índices de concentração, o CR(k) indicou concentração muito alta para os países e alta nos subcontinentes. O HHI apresentou concentração alta para os continentes e subcontinentes e uma concentração moderada para os países. A Entropia e o HTI corroboraram as análises encontradas no HHI. O G apontou forte desigualdade para todos os níveis territoriais e apresentou tendências de redução na desigualdade a partir de 2015. A redução da concentração, nos últimos anos de estudo, encontra relação com a expansão e a difusão tecnológica de conversão energética da biomassa densificada, o que torna o combustível mais acessível.

ABSTRACT Faced with the transition in the global energy structure with the shift in consumption of fossil fuels to renewable and clean sources, there has been an increase in the demand for forest biomass for energy purposes, especially wood pellets, and imports have grown in recent years. Therefore, this study analyzed the world concentration of pellet imports from 2012 to 2018. Data on pellet imports were obtained from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and the following indicators were used to measure the concentration: Concentration Ratio [CR(k)], Hirschman-Herfindal Index (HHI), Theil Entropy Index (E), Gini Inequality Coefficient (G) and the Hall-Tideman Index (HTI). The results showed a growth of 16.67% p.a. of global pellet imports, from 8.76 million tons (t) in 2012 to 22.15 million tons in 2018. The CR(k) indicated very high concentration for countries and high in the subcontinents. The HHI showed a high concentration for continents and subcontinents and a moderate concentration for countries. Entropy and HTI corroborated the analyzes found in the HHI. The G pointed out strong inequality for all territorial levels and showed trends towards a reduction in inequality as of 2015. The reduction in the concentration in the final years of study is related to the expansion and technological diffusion of energy conversion of the densified biomass, which makes this fuel more affordable.

Resumo Avaliou-se o uso do solo e dos recursos florestais do bioma Caatinga no estado da Paraíba, de 1996 a 2018. Foram levantados dados da cobertura vegetal e das características dos recursos florestais e o seu potencial produtivo para a lenha e o carvão vegetal. As informações empregadas para caracterização do uso do solo e dos recursos florestais da Paraíba foram obtidas do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), do Ministério do Meio Ambiente (MMA) e da Associação Plantas do Nordeste (APNE). A pesquisa foi exploratória e os resultados apontam a existência de uma degradação contínua da cobertura vegetal, porém os tipos de uso do solo se modificaram ao longo dos anos estudados. Observou-se uma alteração no uso das terras da Paraíba com uma ampliação das áreas de matas/florestas e redução das áreas de pastagem. O carvão vegetal e a lenha foram os principais produtos do extrativismo. A Caatinga paraibana perdeu mais de 46% da sua vegetação, cerca de 2,40 milhões de hectares, mas observou-se o aumento do PMFS via adoção de políticas públicas e conscientização do mercado. As estimativas adotadas da cobertura vegetal e do uso do solo da Paraíba mostraram sensibilidade e elevado grau de risco à desertificação do bioma, necessitando de ações conjuntas permanentes que garantam o uso sustentável da biodiversidade. Conclui-se que a solução efetiva vem da conscientização e da prática do Plano de Manejo Florestal Sustentado no semiárido paraibano, proporcionando de forma mais eficaz a sustentabilidade do bioma Caatinga.

Abstract The use of soil and forest resources of the Caatinga biome in the state of Paraíbawas evaluated from 1996 to 2018. Data on vegetation cover and forest resource characteristics and their productive potential for firewood and charcoal were collected.The information used to characterize Paraíba’s land use and forest resources were examined by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the Ministry of Environment of Brazilian (MMA) and the Northeast Plants Association (APNE). The research is exploratory and based on secondary data and may contribute, in part, to the economic development in the state. The results point to the existence of a constant degradation of the vegetation cover, although the types of soil use have changed over the studied years. The estimates adopted for vegetation cover and land use in Paraíba showed sensitivity and a high degree of risk to desertification of the biome, requiring permanent joint actions that guarantee the sustainable use of its biodiversity. It is concluded that the effective solution comes from the awareness and the practice of the Sustainable Forest Management Plan in the semi-arid region of Paraíba, providing more effectively the sustainability of the Caatinga biome.

Resumo Este artigo analisou o padrão de especialização e localização do Valor Bruto da Produção (VBP) dos produtos madeireiros nativos nas microrregiões da Paraíba de 1994 a 2017. A coleta de dados realizou-se a partir das informações disponíveis da Produção da Extração Vegetal e da Silvicultura (PEVS) do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE). Os indicadores empregados foram: o quociente locacional (QL), o coeficiente locacional (CL), o coeficiente de redistribuição (CRED), o coeficiente de associação geográfica (Cag), o coeficiente de especialização (CE) e o coeficiente de reestruturação (Cr). Os resultados evidenciaram que a lenha foi o principal produto madeireiro extraído nas microrregiões da Paraíba; apenas a microrregião do Serra de Teixeira apresentou relevância na extração de madeira em tora; a lenha foi o produto madeireiro que apresentou maior redistribuição; nos anos finais da análise as microrregiões do Litoral Norte e do Cariri Ocidental foram as mais especializadas, com ênfase na extração de lenha e as microrregiões do Litoral Norte, Cariri Ocidental, João Pessoa e Litoral Sul foram as que apresentaram maior mudança no padrão de extração dos produtos madeireiros com relação a 1994. A partir deste estudo é possível a orientação de políticas públicas que promovam o extrativismo vegetal de forma renovável para o suprimento da demanda energética e que possibilite o desenvolvimento de regiões.

Abstract This article analyzed the pattern of the Gross Value Production (VBP) specialization and location of native wood products in Paraíba’s microregions, from 1994 to 2017. The data collection was carried out from the available information of the Production of Plant Extraction and Silviculture (PEVS) of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The indicators used were the locational quotient (QL), the locational coefficient (CL), the redistribution coefficient (CRED), the geographic association coefficient (Cag), the specialization coefficient (CE) and the restructuring coefficient (Cr). The results showed that firewood was the main wood product extracted in Paraíba’s microregions; only the microregion of Serra de Teixeira presented relevance in the extraction of wood in log; wood was the logging product that presented the greatest redistribution; in the final years of the analysis, the micro-regions of Litoal Norteand Cariri Ocidental were the most specialized, with emphasis on the extraction of firewood and the microregions of the Litoral Norte, Cariri Ocidental, João Pessoa and Litoral Sul were the ones that presented the greatest change in the extraction pattern of the products in relation to 1994. From this study, it is possible to guide public policies that promote renewable plant extraction to supply the energy demand and enable the development of regions.

Abstract Forest replacement is a public policy consisting of a set of measures that ensure the continuity of forest raw material supply to the consumers of native species. It is currently required through Art. 33 of the Federal Law 12,651/2012. Thus, this study aimed to characterize the main legislations and facts related to the forest replacement policy, addressing their responsible bodies and indicating their contributions to the forest sector, based on an extensive bibliographical and documentary research. Three federal bodies stood out as being responsible for such policy: INP, IBDF, and Ibama; being the responsibility of the third one shared with similar state agencies. The planted area was significant, especially during the period in which the IBDF was the responsible body, due to its encouraging performance and the incentives in force. We observed there are still problems related to transparency and implementation effectiveness due to the lack of joint actions between stakeholders and the incipient technical assistance.

ABSTRACT Forest concessions were implemented in Brazil as a way to increase the areas of sustainable forest management. Little is known about the financial viability of forest management in Brazil, which is one of its main bottlenecks. In this context, the aim of the study was to evaluate the financial viability of an investment in forest concession. In order to do so, the Net Present Value (NPV), Periodic Equivalent Benefit (PEB), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Real Options Analysis (ROA) were adopted, and the option of abandonment was also analyzed. As a variable for ROA analysis, the productivity (m³.ha-1) at the first years of forest concession under study was adopted. The NPV of the investment corresponds to US$ 8.04.m-³, the PEB was US$ 0.52.m-³.year-1 and the IRR, 20.75%. In order to be considered feasible, the forest concession must have a minimum productivity of 17.75 m³.ha-1. Of the 861 managerial decisions, the option to proceed with the investment was adopted in 237 nodes (27.53%), and the decision to abandon was exercised in 624 nodes (72.47%). This is a worrying result for the concessionaire companies and also for the management entities of the forest concessions, mainly when comparing with the concessions reality, where abandonment is an option that has been performed. It can be concluded that the high probability of abandoning highlights a fragility of forest concessions. ROA proved to be a good methodology to complement traditional methods of financial analysis, presenting satisfactory results in aiding decision-making.

Abstract Introduction: Engineered for noble purposes, Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) is a reconstituted wood panel used to reproduce wood designs and details. Objective: To analyze the global concentration of MDF exports in the period 1995 to 2016. Materials and methods: The information was obtained from the statistics division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (©FAO Statistics Division). Export concentration was measured using the following indicators: concentration ratio (CR[k]), Herfindahl-Hirschman index (HHI), Theil’s entropy index (E), comprehensive concentration index (CCI), Hall and Tideman index (HTI) and Gini coefficient (G). Results and discussion: MDF exports grew 9.44 % annually, with China and Germany being the main exporters. Resumen Introducción: Proyectado para fines nobles, Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) es un panel de madera reconstituida que se usa para reproducir diseños y detalles de madera. Objetivo: Analizar la concentración mundial de las exportaciones de MDF en el periodo de 1995 a 2016. Materiales y métodos: La información se obtuvo en la división estadística de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura (©FAO Statistics Division). ABSTRACT This study analyzed the regional concentration of the gross production value (GPV) of firewood in Paraíba from 1994 to 2014. It measured the concentration by means of the Concentration Ratio [CR(k)] of the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), Theil’s Entropy (E), the Hall-Tindelman Index (HTI), and the Gini Index (G). From the analyses performed, it was concluded that there was growth in the GPV of firewood in Paraíba from R$ 2.59 million to R$ 10.39 million (in current terms). The CR(4) and CR(8) of the municipalities indicated low concentration; the CR(4) in the microregions presented a moderately low concentration, and the CR(8) had moderately high concentration. The HHI of the municipalities and microregions has a competitive market, and the HHI of the mesoregions has moderate concentration; E corroborated the evidence of HHI; HTI presented low regional concentration; G showed medium to strong inequality for mesoregions, weak to medium in microregions and zero to weak in municipalities.

RESUMO O carvão vegetal tem uma importância econômica, social e ambiental, pois além de fonte de energia, gera emprego e renda no meio rural. Portanto, conhecer o seu mercado é fundamental para as tomadas de decisões daqueles segmentos que dependem desta matéria prima. Este trabalho analisou a concentração regional da produção de carvão vegetal no estado da Paraíba, Brasil, no período de 1994 a 2016. Os dados empregados para mensurar a concentração regional da produção (em toneladas) do carvão vegetal nativo da Paraíba foram obtidos no Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), no período de 1994 a 2016. Os indicadores utilizados foram a Razão de Concentração [CR(k)], o Índice de Herfindahl-Hirschman (HHI), o índice de entropia de Theil (E) e o Índice de Gini (G). Os principais resultados mostram que as mesorregiões da Borborema e do Sertão Paraibano se concentram a produção de carvão vegetal da Paraíba. O CR(k) dos municípios teve concentração baixa a moderadamente baixa e para as microrregiões uma concentração moderadamente alto a alto; o HHI e E mostraram tendências de desconcentração apresentando de mercados competitivos; o G mostrou em média uma desigualdade forte a muito forte para os municípios e microrregiões. Conclui-se que a concentração da produção do carvão vegetal nos níveis regionais não é concentrada, mesmo apresentando concentração moderada nos índices parciais [CR(k)] para as microrregiões da Paraíba.

ABSTRACT Charcoal has an economic, social and environmental importance, because in addition to being a source of energy, it generates employment and income in the rural environment. Therefore, knowing your market is fundamental for the decision-making of those segments that depend on this raw material. This work analyzed the regional concentration of charcoal production in the state of Paraíba, Brazil, from 1994 to 2016. The data used to measure the regional production concentration (in tons) of native Paraíba charcoal were obtained from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) from 1994 to 2016. The indicators used were the Concentration Ratio [CR(k)], the Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), Theil's entropy index (E) and the Gini Index (G). The main results show that the mesorregions of Borborema and Sertão Paraibano present concentrations in charcoal production from Paraíba. The CR(k) of the municipalities had a low to moderately low concentration and a moderately high to a high concentration for the microregions; the HHI and E showed deconcentration tendencies from competitive markets; the G showed strong to very strong inequality for the municipalities and microregions on average. It is concluded that the concentration of charcoal production at regional levels is not concentrated, even though it presents a moderate concentration in the partial indices [CR(k)] for the Paraíba microregions.

RESUMO Este artigo analisou a disparidade do valor bruto de produção dos produtos madeireiros do extrativismo vegetal das mesorregiões da Paraíba, Brasil, no período de 1994 a 2017. Os indicadores empregados foram: o quociente locacional (QL), o coeficiente locacional (CL), o coeficiente de redistribuição (CRED), o coeficiente de associação geográfica (Cag), o coeficiente de especialização (CE) e o coeficiente de reestruturação (Cr). Os resultados apontaram que a lenha foi o principal produto madeireiro e a mesorregião Sertão paraibano maior relevância, elevando a disparidade entre as regiões; o CRED apontou maior mudança para o carvão vegetal; a Mata Paraibana foi mais especializada em lenha e a mesorregião da Borborema apresentou a maior reestruturação em todos os períodos estudados. O estudo evidenciou que o VBP dos produtos madeireiros nativos ocorreu, principalmente, nas regiões mais áridas do estado para atender a demanda energética local e circunvizinha, com destaque aos segmentos de cerâmica vermelha e gesso.

ABSTRACT This paper analyzed the disparity in the gross production value of timber products from the state of Paraíba, Brazil, between 1994 and 2017. The indicators used were: the locational quotient (Lq), the coefficient of location (Cl), the coefficient of redistribution (Cred), the coefficient of geographic association (Cga), the coefficient of specialization (Cs) and the coefficient of restructuring (Cr). The results obtained indicated that wood was the main timber product extracted in the state of Paraíba, with the Sertão paraibano region being of greater relevance, increasing the disparity between the regions; the Cred pointed out greater change for charcoal extraction; the Mata Paraibana region was the most specialized region, especially for wood extraction; and the Borborema region presented the greatest restructuring in all studied periods. The study evidenced that the extraction of wood products mainly occurred in the more arid regions of the state with the purpose of population subsistence or industrial use, especially in the red ceramics and plaster segments for which wood can be used to generate heat and thermoelectric power.

RESUMO A sociedade moderna passa por uma transição progressiva em direção a comportamentos ambientais menos prejudiciais, para promover a sustentabilidade. Este estudo avaliou a pegada de carbono associada a três formas de descarte aos resíduos de poda urbana: aterro sanitário (destino habitual), geração de eletricidade e geração de calor. O estudo de caso foi realizado na cidade de João Pessoa, Nordeste do Brasil. A metodologia de Avaliação de Ciclo de Vida foi aplicada aos insumos de materiais e energia associados a cada cenário de descarte de resíduo de poda urbana, e o método de avaliação de impacto selecionado foi o IPCC 2013 GWP 100ª, que expressa o impacto ambiental em termos de emissões de gases de efeito estufa. A partir das análises realizadas, concluiu-se que a prática atual (aterro sanitário) apresentou a maior pegada de carbono, dentro dos cenários estudados. O melhor cenário foi a utilização de resíduos de poda urbana para a geração de eletricidade, que apresentou uma pegada de carbono negativa (emissões evitadas).

ABSTRACT Modern society experiences a progressive transition towards less harmful environmental behavior to foster sustainability. This study evaluated the carbon footprint associated with three types of urban pruning waste disposal: sanitary landfill (usual destination), generation of electricity, and generation of heat. A study case was carried out in the municipality of João Pessoa, Northeast Brazil. The Life Cycle Assessment methodology was applied to the material and energy inputs associated with each urban pruning waste disposal scenario, and the impact evaluation method selected was IPCC 2013 GWP 100y, which expresses environmental impact in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. From the analyses carried out herein, it was concluded that the current practice (sanitary landfilling) presented the highest carbon footprint within the studied scenarios. The best scenario was the utilization of urban pruning waste for the generation of electricity, which presented a negative carbon footprint (avoided emissions).

RESUMO Este artigo analisou a concentração regional da produção da lenha nativa da Paraíba, no período de 1994 a 2014. Os dados da quantidade produzida de lenha nativa foram extraídos da produção da extração vegetal e da silvicultura disponíveis no Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística. A concentração regional foi determinada por meio dos indicadores: Razão de Concentração [CR(k)], Índice de Herfindahl-Hirschman (HHI), Entropia de Theil (E), Índice Hall-Tindelman (HTI) e o coeficiente de Gini (G). A partir das análises realizadas neste estudo, conclui-se que no período estudado houve uma redução da produção de lenha na Paraíba, em virtude da atuação dos órgãos fiscalizadores e ambientais, passando de 1.173.383 m3, em 1994, para 484.142 m3, em 2014; o CR(k) da produção de lenha na Paraíba para as 4 maiores microrregiões apresentou-se concentração moderadamente baixa e para as 8 maiores microrregiões caracterizou-se como moderadamente alta; para os municípios indicou concentração baixa e mercado competitivo; o HHI para os municípios e microrregiões demonstrou baixa concentração indicando um mercado altamente competitivo. Já às mesorregiões caracterizou concentração moderada para produção de lenha; o E mostrou comportamentos semelhantes entre municípios e microrregiões demonstrando baixa concentração. A mesorregião teve pouca concorrência entre as regiões produtoras de lenha inferindo concentração moderada, corroborando assim o HHI; o HTI também apresentou baixa concentração nos níveis regionais (municípios, microrregiões e mesorregiões), indicando concorrência elevada como os demais indicadores; o G mostrou desigualdade de nula a fraca para os municípios, obteve desigualdade fraca a média nas microrregiões, e desigualdade média a forte nas mesorregiões.

ABSTRACT This paper analyzed the regional concentration of firewood production in Paraíba state, from 1994 to 2014. The data on the quantity of native firewood produced were extracted from the production of the vegetal extraction and forestry available at the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística). The regional concentration was determined through the indicators: Concentration Ratio [CR(k)], Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI), of Theil’s Entropy index (E), the Hall-Tindelman Index (HTI) and the Gini Index (G). From the analyzes carried out in this study, it was concluded that during the period studied there was a reduction in the production of firewood in Paraíba state, due to the performance of the inspection and environmental agencies, from 1,173,383 m3 in 1994 to 484,142 m3 in 2014; The CR(k) of the firewood production in Paraíba for the 4 largest microregions presented a moderately low concentration and for the 8 largest microregions it was characterized as moderately high; for municipalities demonstrated low concentration and competitive market; the HHI for the municipalities and microregions showed low concentration indicating a highly competitive market. In the mesoregions, there was a moderate concentration of firewood production; and E showed similar behaviors between municipalities and microregions showing low concentration. The mesoregion had little competition among the firewood regions, inferring moderate concentration, thus corroborating HHI; HTI also presented low concentration at regional levels (municipalities, microregions and mesoregions), indicating high competition as the other indicators; the G showed inequality from zero to weak for the municipalities, it obtained weak inequality in the microregions, and medium to strong inequality in the mesoregions.
