A megabiodiversidade existente no Brasil pode ser observada em uma variedade de biomas, como a Mata Atlântica, que é considerada um dos biomas mais biodiversos do mundo. Mas essa biodiversidade vem sendo ameaçada por atividades antrópicas que resultam em fragmentação de habitats e degradação ambiental. Técnicas preconizadas pela ciência da restauração ecológica têm sido aplicadas como modo de reverter a degradação ambiental e promover a restauração da vegetação. Informações qualitativas e quantitativas sobre a vegetação de áreas em processo de sucessão secundária constituem subsídios importantes para a aplicação de técnicas de restauração ativa, baseadas no plantio de mudas. Este trabalho apresenta um estudo florístico e fitossociológico do componente arbóreo-arbustivo de vegetação ciliar com 12 anos de idade que regenerou espontaneamente em área de antiga pastagem (restauração passiva). Foram compiladas informações quanto à abundância das espécies, síndrome de dispersão (zoocoria, anemocoria e autocoria), categoria sucessional (pioneiras e não-pioneiras) e ameaça de extinção. Foram amostrados 856 indivíduos, e identifi- cadas 60 espécies nativas e quatro espécies exóticas distribuídas em 31 famílias. As famílias mais abundantes foram Myrtaceae, Euphorbiaceae e Fabaceae, com 431 indivíduos, 175 indivíduos e 60 indivíduos, respectivamente. As famílias mais ricas foram Myrtaceae e Fabaceae, com 11 e sete espécies, respectivamente. As espécies mais abundantes e frequentes foram Myrcia selloi, Gymnanthes klotzschiana, Myrcia subcordata, Sebastiania brasiliensis, Myrcia glomerata e Eugenia involucrata. A síndrome de dispersão zoocórica foi a mais comum, com 38 espécies e 547 indivíduos. A categoria sucessional não-pioneira predominou com 33 espécies e 533 indivíduos. Não foram encontradas espécies ameaçadas de extinção na área. As informações disponibilizadas neste estudo poderão subsidiar projetos de restauração ativa de matas ciliares na região.

The existing megabiodiversity in Brazil is represented a variety of biomes, such as the Atlantic Forest, which is considered one of the most biodiverse biomes in the world. However, this biodiversity has been threatened by human activities, resulting in habitat fragmentation and environmental degradation. Techniques recommended by ecological restoration science have been applied to reverse environmental deg radation and promote the restoration of vegetation. Qualitative and quantitative information on the vegetation of areas in the process of secondary succession consti tutes important subsidies for the application of active restoration techniques based on the planting of seedlings. This work presents a floristic and phytosociological study of the tree-shrub component of 12-year-old riparian vegetation that spontane ously regenerated in an area of abandoned pasture (passive restoration). Information regarding species abundance, dispersal syndrome (zoochory, anemochory and auto- chory), successional category (pioneer and non-pioneer) and extinction threaten was compiled. A total of 856 individuals were sampled, where 60 native species and four exotic ones were identified, distributed in 31 families. The most abundant families were Myrtaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Fabaceae, with 431, 175 and 60 individuals, respectively. The richest families were Myrtaceae and Fabaceae with 11 and seven species, respectively. The most abundant and frequent species were Myrcia selloi, Gymnanthes klotzschiana, Myrcia subcordata, Sebastiania brasiliensis, Myrcia glomerata and Eugenia involucrata. The zoochoric dispersal syndrome was the most common with 38 species and 547 individuals. The non-pioneer successional category pre dominated with 33 species and 533 individuals. No endangered species were found in the area. The information available in this study may support projects for the active restoration of riparian forests in the region.

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the landscape structure of a watershed located in a region considered strategic for the implementation of the Paraná River Biodiversity Corridor. Based on land-use/land-cover mapping, four different scenarios were generated: 1) real situation, 2) considering the edge effect, 3) without Permanent Preservation Areas (APPs), and 4) with restoration of the riparian APPs. Different landscape metrics were calculated for each scenario. In scenario 2, only 28% of the total natural vegetation cover remained as core areas. In scenario 3, there was a considerable increase in forest fragmentation. In scenario 4, an expressive increase in landscape connectivity was promoted. In conclusion, a relatively small increase in natural vegetation cover can promote considerable increase in landscape connectivity and restoration of the riparian APPs in watersheds of the region should be considered as a priority action for the implementation of the Paraná River Biodiversity Corridor.

RESUMO Conduzimos um estudo florístico em fragmentos de floresta nativa de uma área localizada entre o ParqueNacional do Iguaçu e a Área de Preservação Permanente do Lago de Itaipu, oeste do Estado do Paraná, objetivando ampliar o conhecimento florístico regional e compilar informações sobre as espécies para subsidiar projetos de restauração naquela área. Encontramos 204 espécies e 51 famílias, sendo as mais ricas Fabaceae (29 spp.), Myrtaceae (18 spp.), Solanaceae (10 spp.), Euphorbiaceae, Meliaceae e Rutaceae (nove spp. cada). A síndrome zoocórica foi a mais comum (69% das espécies), seguida pela anemocórica (17%) e autocórica (14%). As espécies não pioneiras foram as mais frequentes (64%). Qualitativamente, de modo geral, esses resultados coincidem com o observado em florestas estacionais semideciduais. Com base em dados fitossociológicos de outros estudos, indicamos 34 espécies localmente abundantes que podem ser usadas em maiores proporções em projetos de restauração. Registramos sete espécies ameaçadas de extinção e 15 exóticas, das quais 12 possuem potencial invasivo demandando ações de controle.

ABSTRACT Aiming to expand the regional floristic knowledge and compile species information to subsidize restoration projects, we conducted a floristic survey in native forest fragments of an area located between the Parque Nacionaldo Iguaçu and the Área de Preservação Permanente do Lago de Itaipu, in western Paraná State. We found 204 species and 51 families, being the richest Fabaceae (29 spp.), Myrtaceae (18 spp.), Solanaceae (10 spp.), Euphorbiaceae, Meliaceae and Rutaceae (nine spp. each). The zoochoric syndrome was the most common (69% of the species), followed by anemochoric (17%) and autochoric (14%). The non-pioneer species were the most frequent (64%). In general terms, these results agree qualitatively with those observed in seasonal semideciduous forests. Based on phytosociological data from other studies, we indicated 34 locally abundant species that can be used in greater proportions in restoration projects. We recorded seven species threatened and 15 exotic, of which 12 have invasive potential and require actions for controlling.

RESUMO Cupressus lusitanica Mill. possui um potencial relativamente baixo para promover a regeneração de espécies nativas sob o dossel da floresta. Entretanto, após o corte raso de uma plantação de Cupressus lusitanica na Floresta Estadual de Avaré (FEA), sudeste do Brasil, uma vigorosa regeneração de espécies arbustivo-arbóreas da floresta Atlântica foi observada. Avaliou-se a restauração passiva desse sítio comparando sua vegetação com a vegetação estabelecida em clareiras artificiais abertas em floresta secundária no Parque Estadual da Cantareira (PEC), sudeste do Brasil. A distribuição de frequência de síndromes de dispersão para espécies e a taxa de redução da abundância das espécies pioneiras em um gráfico de rol de abundância não diferiram entre as duas áreas. As curvas de rarefação para riqueza de espécies e diversidade do PEC ficaram abaixo das curvas correspondentes da FEA. As proporções de espécies não pioneiras e de indivíduos de espécies não pioneiras foram maiores na FEA. A distribuição de frequência de síndromes de dispersão para indivíduos diferiu entre as duas áreas devido a uma predominância mais acentuada de zoocoria na FEA. A taxa de redução da abundância das espécies não pioneiras em um gráfico de rol de abundância foi menor na FEA. Concluiu-se que a restauração passiva pode recuperar atributos da vegetação nativa após o corte raso de plantações florestais desprovidas de conspícua regeneração de espécies nativas no sub-bosque. No entanto, esse fenômeno pode ser influenciado por propriedades particulares da espécie florestal, práticas de exploração e integridade da dispersão de sementes pela fauna.

ABSTRACT Cupressus lusitanica has a relatively low potential for fostering colonization of native species beneath the forest canopy. However, following the clearcut of a Cupressus lusitanica plantation in the State Forest of Avaré (SFA), southeastern Brazil, a vigorous regeneration of Atlantic forest tree and shrub species was observed. We evaluated the passive restoration of this site by comparing its regenerating vegetation to the vegetation established in man-made gaps in Atlantic forest in the State Park of Cantareira (SPC), southeastern Brazil. The frequency distribution of dispersal syndromes for species and the rate of reduction in abundance of pioneer species in a rank/abundance plot did not differ between the two areas. The rarefaction curves for species richness and diversity of the SPC fall below the corresponding curves of the SFA. The proportions of non-pioneer species and of individuals of non-pioneer species were greater in the SFA. The frequency distribution of dispersal syndromes for individuals differed between the two areas due mainly to a more conspicuous predominance of zoochory in the SFA. The rate of reduction in abundance of non-pioneer species in a rank/abundance plot was smaller in the SFA. We concluded that passive restoration may successfully recover native vegetation attributes following the clearcut of forest plantations without conspicuous regeneration of native species beneath the forest canopy. However, this phenomenon may be influenced by particular properties of the forest species, logging practices and faunal seed dispersal integrity.

A Estação Ecológica de Itapeva - EEcI (24º 04' S e 49º 04' W, altitude 750 m), Itapeva, SP, é uma Unidade de Conservação (UC) de proteção integral com cobertura vegetal predominante de cerrado denso e cerradão, cuja ocorrência na região representa o limite meridional de distribuição do cerrado sensu lato. Buscando conhecer a flora regional e supondo a existência de particularidades florísticas devido às condições climáticas locais (ausência de déficit hídrico e incidência de geadas), realizamos um levantamento florístico nesta UC entre fevereiro de 2008 a maio de 2010 e registramos 437 espécies em sete diferentes fisionomias. Nas fisionomias de cerrado sensu lato foram encontradas 346 espécies distribuídas em 87 famílias e 220 gêneros. As famílias mais ricas foram Asteraceae (31 espécies), Fabaceae (27), Myrtaceae (26), Melastomataceae (21), Rubiaceae (15), Lauraceae (12), Bignoniaceae (11) e Poaceae (10). Em relação à riqueza e famílias mais representativas, a flora da EEcI não difere de outros remanescentes de cerrado sensu lato em latitudes mais baixas. Contudo, espécies frequentes naqueles remanescentes - Dimorphandra mollis, Xylopia aromatica, Eugenia aurata e Tocoyena formosa - não foram encontradas na região da área de estudo, provavelmente devido ao efeito de geadas e outros fatores climáticos limitantes. Por outro lado, Annona dioica, Brosimum gaudichaudii, Duguetia furfuracea, Anadenanthera peregrina var. falcata, Caryocar brasiliense e Schefflera vinosa não tinham ocorrência prevista na região de Itapeva por modelos de distribuição geográfica, possivelmente devido à ausência de déficit hídrico. As informações florísticas obtidas neste estudo poderão auxiliar na parametrização desses modelos. A similaridade florística observada entre os extremos fisionômicos de cerrado sensu lato de interflúvio na EEcI: cerradão e cerrado ralo, 26%, foi menor do que a similaridade florística entre a fisionomia campestre úmida e o cerrado ralo (27%), e entre a primeira e o cerrado denso (30%). Portanto, considerando a composição florística como um dos aspectos definidores do tipo de vegetação, a fisionomia campestre úmida pode ser incluída na delimitação de cerrado sensu lato na EEcI. Foram registradas oito espécies ameaçadas de extinção. Devido às dimensões reduzidas da UC, sugerimos a sua ampliação visando maior efetividade na conservação das populações dessas espécies.

The Itapeva Ecological Station - EEcI (24º 04' S and 49º 04' W, altitude 750 m), Itapeva, São Paulo State, is a Protected Area (PA) predominantly covered by cerrado denso and cerradão, whose occurrence in the region represents the southern limit of distribution of cerrado sensu lato. Aiming to know the regional flora and assuming the existence of floristic peculiarities due to the local weather conditions (incidence of frosts and absence of water deficit), we conducted a floristic survey in this PA from February 2008 to May 2010 and recorded 437 species in seven different physiognomies. In the cerrado sensu lato physiognomies, 346 species, distributed among 87 families and 220 genera, were found. The richest families were Asteraceae (31 species), Fabaceae (27), Myrtaceae (26), Melastomataceae (21), Rubiaceae (15), Lauraceae (12), Bignoniaceae (11) and Poaceae (10). Concerning richness and family representativeness, the EEcI flora does not differ from that of other cerrado sensu lato remnants at lower latitudes. However, frequent species in those remnants - Dimorphandra mollis, Xylopia aromatica, Eugenia aurata and Tocoyena formosa - were not found in the study area region, probably due to frost effects and other limiting climatic factors. On the other hand, geographical distribution models did not predict the occurrence of Annona dioica, Brosimum gaudichaudii, Duguetia furfuracea, Anadenanthera peregrina var. falcata, Caryocar brasiliense and Schefflera vinosa for the region of Itapeva, possibly due to the absence of water deficit. The floristic data obtained in this study may assist in the parameterization of these models. The floristic similarity observed between the physiognomic extremes of the cerrado sensu lato in the EEcI: cerradão and cerrado ralo, 26%, was smaller than the floristic similarity between the swamp grassland physiognomy and the cerrado ralo (27%), and between the former and the cerrado denso (30%). Therefore, considering floristic composition as one of the defining aspects of vegetation type, the swamp grassland can be included in the delimitation of cerrado sensu lato in the EEcI. We recorded eight species threatened with extinction. Due to the PA's small dimensions, we suggest the expansion of its area for a more effective conservation of these species' populations.

O déficit hídrico influenciou na formação dos vasos da madeira de Croton floribundus ocorrentes em cinco áreas com as seguintes vegetações: Floresta Ombrófila, Floresta Estacional Semidecidual e Cerradão. As variações dos vasos devem-se especialmente ao déficit hídrico e número de meses com déficit hídrico. Vasos de maior diâmetro ocorreram em áreas com maior déficit hídrico, o que pode indicar uma estratégia para otimizar o transporte de água em épocas favoráveis. Vasos com menores diâmetros ocorreram em áreas com menor déficit hídrico, possivelmente influenciados pelas menores temperaturas mínimas e a ocorrência de geadas, que semelhante a seca, causa a embolia dos vasos. Na Estação Ecológica de Caetetus, Floresta Estacional Semidecidual (área com maior déficit de água) observaram-se investimentos em eficiência e segurança, com a ocorrência de vasos de maior diâmetro associados a um dos menores índices de vulnerabilidade e maior proporção de vasos múltiplos de quatro ou mais elementos.

In this paper we showed that water deficit affects the wood vessels of Croton floribundus in five areas with different vegetation types: Rain Forest, Semi-deciduous Forest and Woody Savanna. We concluded that variations in the vessels are due especially to water deficit and the number of months with water deficit. Larger diameter vessels occurred in areas with higher water deficit, which may represent a strategy to optimize the water transport in favorable periods. Vessels with smaller diameters occur in areas with lower deficit, which may be related to lower minimum temperatures and frost occurrence, which like drought can cause vessel embolism. In Caetetus Ecological Station, a Semi-deciduous Forest (area of highest water deficit), we observed investments in efficiency and safety, with the occurrence of larger diameter vessels associated with one of the lowest vulnerability indexes and highest proportions of multiple vessels of four or more elements.

Este trabalho descreve a composição e a estrutura da comunidade arbórea de 1 ha de Floresta Ombrófila Densa Atlântica Submontana primária localizado no litoral norte do estado de São Paulo (S 23° 21'59.8" - O 45° 05'02.8") e relaciona sua flora em um contexto regional. Todos os indivíduos arbóreos com perímetro a altura do peito (pap) > 15 cm foram amostrados em 100 parcelas (10 × 10 m) contíguas. Foram encontrados 1881 indivíduos de 206 espécies, 102 gêneros e 48 famílias, sendo 1578 árvores (83,9%), 237 palmeiras (12,6%), 8 samambaias arborescentes (0,42%) e 58 mortos (3,08%). Myrtaceae (43), Rubiaceae (18), Lauraceae (16) e Fabaceae (13) foram as famílias de maior riqueza e Rubiaceae, Myrtaceae, Arecaceae e Sapotaceae foram as famílias de maior densidade, somando 946 indivíduos (50,29%). Euterpe edulis Mart. obteve o maior índice de valor de importância (ivi) e a maior densidade (9,5%). Foram registradas duas espécies novas e duas espécies tiveram seu primeiro registro para o estado de São Paulo. A diversidade (H' = 4,48 nats.indivíduo-1) e a riqueza da área (206 espécies) estão entre as maiores registradas em levantamentos de florestas brasileiras.

This work describes the tree community structure and composition in a 1 ha plot of undisturbed Atlantic Forest located at the north coast (S 23° 21' 59.8" - W 45° 05' 02.8") of São Paulo state and relates its floristic composition in a regional context. We sampled all stems with diameter at breast height (dbh) > 4.8 cm in 100 contiguous 10 × 10 m plots. We found 1881 individuals distributed in 206 species, 102 genera and 48 families. 1578 stems were trees (83.9%), 237 palms (12.6%), eight ferns (0.42%) and 58 standing dead trees (3.08%). Myrtaceae (43), Rubiaceae (18), Lauraceae (16), and Fabaceae (13) were the families with the greatest number of species, respectively. Rubiaceae, Myrtaceae, Arecaceae, and Sapotaceae had the greatest number of individuals, respectively, summing 946 stems (50.29%). Euterpe edulis Mart. had the highest importance value (iv) and stem density (9.5%). We found two new species and two other species had their first record in São Paulo state. The species richness (206) and diversity (H' = 4.48 nats.indivíduo-1) are among the highest ever recorded in Brazilian forests.

A necessidade de ampliação da densidade de coleta em escala nacional, tanto para subsidiar a identificação de áreas prioritárias para conservação como para ampliar o conhecimento sobre a biota do país, tem sido enfatizada em diversas análises recentes sobre a biodiversidade brasileira. No caso das plantas, a densidade de coleta em escala nacional (0,44 exsicatas/km²) está bem abaixo do considerado adequado para um conhecimento completo da flora (3 exsicatas/km²) ou mesmo para a avaliação da riqueza de uma determinada região (1 exsicata/km²). Análises recentes têm revelado que mesmo nas regiões Sul e Sudeste, dotadas de mais infra-estrutura e maior número de botânicos, a densidade de coletas é insatisfatória. No estado de São Paulo algumas regiões têm sido consideradas carentes em esforço de coleta. Uma dessas regiões corresponde à bacia hidrográfica do Alto Paranapanema. Este trabalho apresenta os resultados de um inventário realizado na Floresta Estadual e Estação Ecológica de Paranapanema (23º 32' 02" S e 48º 45' 29" O), e é parte de um projeto mais amplo, cujo objetivo é ampliar a densidade de coletas botânicas naquela região. As unidades de conservação possuem 900 ha de Floresta Estacional Semidecidual. As trilhas pré-existentes e as abertas para este estudo foram georreferenciadas e percorridas mensalmente no período de junho de 2007 a julho de 2008. Foram efetuadas 693 coletas de plantas férteis, sendo inventariadas 489 espécies, pertencentes a 294 gêneros e 98 famílias botânicas, assim distribuídas nas formas de vida: 291 árvores (59,5%), 72 lianas (14,7%), 58 arbustos (11,9%), 45 ervas (9,2%), 19 epífitas (3,9%) e 4 hemiparasitas (0,8%). Quinze espécies encontram-se ameaçadas de extinção. A riqueza de espécies concentrou-se em Myrtaceae (37 espécies), Fabaceae-Faboideae (32), Rubiaceae (28), Bignoniaceae (23), Asteraceae (20), Lauraceae (17), Apocynaceae (15), Melastomataceae (13), Euphorbiaceae, Malvaceae e Fabaceae-Mimosoideae (12 cada). A densidade de coleta no município de Paranapanema passou de 0,027 para 0,71 exsicatas/km².

The need for increasing the botanical collecting effort at the national scale, as to aid in the identification of priority areas for conservation as to improve the knowledge about the national biota, has been highlighted in several recent analyses concerning the Brazilian biodiversity. For the plants, the collecting density at the national scale (0.44 dried specimens/km²) is well bellow the minimum for a complete knowledge about the flora (3 dried specimens/km²) or even for an assessment of the richness of a given region (1 dried specimen/km²). Recent analysis revealed that even in the South and Southwest regions, where the infra-structure is better and the number of botanists greater, the collecting density is inadequate. In the São Paulo state, some regions have been considered poorly collected. The Alto Paranapanema basin is one of these regions. This paper presents the results of a botanical inventory at the Paranapanema municipality conservation units (23º 32' 02" S and 48º 45' 29" W) and is part of a broader project which aims to contribute for an increase in the botanical collecting density at that region. The State Forest and the Ecological Station of Paranapanema have 900 ha of Seasonal Semideciduous Forest. The pre-existing trails and the trails established for this research were visited monthly between June 2007 and July 2008. 693 fertile specimens were collected and 489 species were identified, belonging to 294 genus and 98 families, according to the following distribution: Myrtaceae (37 species), Fabaceae-Faboideae (32), Rubiaceae (28), Bignoniaceae (23), Asteraceae (20), Lauraceae (17), Apocynaceae (15), Melastomataceae (13), Euphorbiaceae, Malvaceae e Fabaceae-Mimosoideae (12 each). Fifteen species are under extinction risk. The distribution of the species among the life forms reveals 291 trees (59.5%), 72 lianas (14.7%), 58 shrubs (11.9%), 45 herbs (9.2%), 19 epiphytes (3.9%) and 4 hemiparasites (0.8%). The collecting density in the municipality of Paranapanema rose from 0.027 to 0.71 dried specimens/km².

O Bosque dos Alemães situa-se no Bairro Guanabara, em Campinas, SP (22º53' S e 47º04' W, altitude 685 m) e é formado por 2 ha de floresta estacional semidecidual. Foi realizado o censo das espécies arbóreas com PAP > ou = 15 cm, em que foram plaqueados 1.937 indivíduos, 1.851 vivos e 86 mortos em pé. Foram identificadas 105 espécies, distribuídas em 43 famílias e 67 gêneros; 80 espécies são nativas e 25 introduzidas. O índice de diversidade de Shannon foi estimado em 3,45 nat.ind.¹. As famílias com maior riqueza foram Leguminosae, Myrtaceae, Moraceae, Rutaceae, Euphorbiaceae e Bignoniaceae. As espécies com maior IVC foram Cryptocarya aschersoniana Mez, Piptadenia gonoacantha (Mart.) Macbr. e Eucalyptus tereticornis Smith. A soma do IVC das espécies introduzidas foi de 31,17. Das espécies nativas, 17 apresentaram apenas um indivíduo e 44, menos do que seis. O estudo discute o risco de descaracterização estrutural e florística da vegetação face ao elevado IVC apresentado pelas espécies introduzidas e à baixa densidade de espécies nativas. De acordo com essa discussão são propostas algumas medidas de manejo para a conservação desse remanescente.

The Alemães Wood is an urban-area of 2 ha of tropical semideciduous forest situated in Campinas, state of São Paulo, Brazil (22º53' S and 47º04' W, 685 m elevation). A census of the arboreal vegetation (PBH > or = 15 cm) was carried out, in which 1937 individuals were recorded, being 1851 alive and 86 standing dead. One hundred and five species were identified, distributed in 43 families and 67 genera; 80 are native species and 25 introduced ones. The Shannon index was estimated as 3.45 nats.ind.¹. The families with the highest richness were Leguminosae, Myrtaceae, Moraceae, Rutaceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Bignoniaceae. The species with the highest IVC were Cryptocarya aschersoniana Mez, Piptadenia gonoacantha (Mart.) Macbr., and Eucalyptus tereticornis Smith. The total IVC of the introduced species was 31.17. Of the native species, 17 presented only one individual and 44 less than six. This paper discusses the risk of structural and floristic changes with both the high IVC of introduced species and low density of the native ones. Based on these findings, some handling measures for the conservation of this remnant are proposed.
