ABSTRACT Texas citrus mite, Eutetranychus banksi (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae: Tetranychinae), considered a serious pest of the citrus crop in some countries, is reported for the first time on mahogany seedlings (Swietenia macrophylla King, Meliaceae) in Brazil, causing foliar tanning with chlorotic spots and premature fall of leaves.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo verificar a ocorrência de Hypsipyla grandella em árvores de cedro situadas em Brasília, Distrito Federal, bem como descrever os principais danos decorridos em frutos e sementes. Foram coletados 283 frutos caídos de árvores de cedro e cada fruto foi analisado individualmente quanto à presença da H. Grandella, visualização dos principais sintomas e sinais da lagarta, como a presença de orifícios, goma, teia e excrementos. Foram encontradas 128 lagartas e 41 pupários no interior dos frutos. A partir do presente estudo foi possível constatar a presença e permanência de H. grandella em árvores de cedro durante os meses de janeiro a abril, época de produção e maturação de frutos da espécie, os quais, assim, servem de inóculo para futuros plantios, tanto de produção comercial como para fins paisagístiscos, dessa Meliaceae na região do Distrito Federal, Brasil.

ABSTRACT This study aimed to report the occurrence of Hypsipyla grandella in cedar trees in Brasilia, Distrito Federal, and describe their main damage in fruits and seeds. 283 fallen fruit of cedar trees were collected and each fruit was individually analyzed for the presence of H. grandella and visualization of the main symptoms and signs of caterpillar, as the presence of holes, gum web and excrement. 128 caterpillars and 41 puparium were found inside the fruits. From the present study, were determined the presence and permanence of H. grandella in cedar trees during the months of January to April, harvest season and ripening of the species, serving as inoculum for future crops, both commercial productions and for landscaping purposes of Meliaceae on the region of the Distrito Federal, Brazil.

RESUMO: O algodoeiro (Gossypium hirsutum) é acometido por várias doenças de importância econômica, dentre as quais a meloidoginose (Meloidogyne incognita raças 3 e 4). Entre os métodos de controle dessa doença, destacam-se as aplicações de nematicidas, a solarização, a aração profunda, a rotação de culturas e o uso de microrganismos antagonistas. Dentre as espécies do gênero Bacillus, existem estirpes que atuam como biorreguladores e antagonistas de vários patógenos. Os testes para identificação dessas estirpes são prejudicados pela dificuldade de se obter grandes populações do patógeno e pelo tempo de execução dos testes in vivo que devem ser conduzidos por cerca de 90 dias. Diante disso, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo comparar a toxicidade de estirpes de B. thuringiensis a dois nematoides, M. icognita e Caenorhabditis elegans, verificando a possibilidade de empregar C. elegans como indicador para a seleção de estirpes com potencial de biocontrole contra M. incognita. Para tanto, a toxicidade de nove estirpes de B. thuringiensis para C. elegans e M. incognita foi avaliada em laboratório e em casa de vegetação. A maioria das estirpes tóxicas ao C. elegans in vitro, também foi tóxica ao M. incognita, sendo que três delas (S906, S1192, S2036) reduziram significativamente as populações dos dois nematoides. O efeito tóxico apresentado pelas estirpes de B. thuringiensis contra C. elegans foram similares aos apresentados pelos mesmos isolados contra M. incognita in vivo. Esses resultados sugerem que é plausível o uso do C. elegans como indicador de toxicidade para seleção de estirpes de B. thuringiensis tóxicas a M. incognita.

ABSTRACT: The cotton plant (Gossypium hirsutum) is affected by several diseases of economic importance, among them root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita races 3 and 4). Methods to control this disease include the application of nematicides, solarization, deep plowing, crop rotation and use of antagonistic microorganisms. Among species of Bacillus, there are strains that act as bioregulators and antagonists of several pathogens. Tests to identify these strains are hampered by the difficulty of obtaining large populations of the pathogen and by the time of execution of the in vivo tests that should be conducted for about 90 days. The objective of this research was to compare the toxicity of B. thuringiensis strains to two nematodes, M. incognita and Caenorhabditis elegans, evaluating the possibility of using C. elegans as an indicator for the selection of strains with biocontrol potential against M. incognita. Therefore, the toxicity of nine B. thuringiensis strains on C. elegans and M. incognita was evaluated under laboratory and greenhouse conditions. Most strains toxic to C. elegans in vitro were also toxic to M. incognita, and three of them (S906, S1192, S2036) significantly reduced the populations of the two nematodes. The toxic effect of B. thuringiensis strains on C. elegans was like that reported for the same bacterial isolates on M. incognita in vivo. These results suggested that it is plausible to use C. elegans as an indicator of toxicity for selection of B. thuringiensis strains toxic to M. incognita.

Estudos com vista a ampliar o conhecimento sobre as espécies fúngicas associadas a plantas nativas do Cerrado bem como a treinar recursos humanos capazes de identificar e conservar a diversidade de fungos nesse ecossistema são de fundamental importância, principalmente quando se analisa a magnitude da micobiota, sua riqueza de espécies e diversidade de habitat. Com base nisso, este trabalho teve como objetivo definir o conjunto de espécies fúngicas associadas à Copaifera langsdorffii (copaíba), levando a uma ampliação do conhecimento micológico regional. Para tanto, foram coletadas amostras de ramos e folhas de copaíba com sintomas e sinais de fungo em Brasília, Distrito Federal, e a micobiota associada foi identificada com o auxílio de chaves apropriadas. Como resultado, oito fungos foram encontrados: Diorchidium copaifera, prováveis novas espécies de Stigmopeltis, Geastrumia, Metathyriella, Treubiomyces e Leptosphaeria, e dois prováveis gêneros novos do grupo dos celomicetos. A partir desse estudo é possível inferir que há uma grande diversidade de fungos em árvores do Cerrado e que sua micobiota ainda foi pouco explorada e identificada.

Studies to expand knowledge on fungal species associated with native plants of the Cerrado and train human resources to identify and conserve fungal diversity in this ecosystem are of paramount importance, especially when considering the magnitude of the mycoflora, and its wealth of species and habitat diversity. Based on this, the purpose of this study was to define the set of fungal species associated with Copaifera langsdorffii, leading to a widening of regional mycological knowledge. To this end, samples of leaves and twigs of C. langsdorffii with symptoms and signs of fungi were collected in Brasilia, the Federal District of Brazil, and its associated mycoflora was identified with the aid of appropriate keys. As a result, eight fungi were found: Diorchidium copaifera; probable new species of Stigmopeltis, Geastrumia, Metathyriella, Treubiomyces and Leptosphaeria; and two new genera in the group of coelomycetes. This study suggests that there is a great diversity of fungi in the Cerrado trees and that their mycobiota is still little explored and identified.
