Resumo O objetivo desta pesquisa foi caracterizar a distribuição dos nutrientes dissolvidos em seis estações de amostragem no estuário do rio Anil (ERA) e caracterizar o sedimento de fundo. A área de estudo é influenciada por um clima tropical e regime macromarés semidiurnas. A amostragem das águas superficiais e sedimentos foi realizada no canal principal em seis estações de amostragem distribuídas ao longo do estuário no período chuvoso (09 de maio) e seco (05 de outubro) durante a primavera. Variáveis físicas foram coletadas com o auxílio de uma sonda multiparâmetro HANNA HI-8424 (temperatura da água, salinidade, pH, oxigênio dissolvido e turbidez) e sonda YSI CTD (condutividade, temperatura e profundidade). Uma draga van Veen foi usada para a coleta de sedimentos de fundo do canal principal. Os resultados sedimentológicos foram heterogêneos. O tamanho do grão variou de areia muito fina a média. Os nutrientes dissolvidos no ERA tinham fontes diferentes dependendo do período sazonal. Insumos continentais e fluviais, evidenciados pelos valores de salinidade, governaram a distribuição dos nutrientes no período chuvoso (janeiro a junho), enquanto as concentrações dos nutrientes foram relacionadas à reciclagem da matéria orgânica no estuário na estação seca (julho a dezembro). A presença de areia no canal principal indica que os sedimentos disponíveis no ERA estão expostos a uma hidrodinâmica intensa. A distribuição dos nutrientes e o tamanho do grão revelaram a ocorrência de diferentes fontes no estuário de acordo com o regime de chuvas e a intensa hidrodinâmica das correntes de maré (macromarés semidiurnas).

Abstract The objective of this research was to characterize the distribution of dissolved nutrients at six sampling stations in the estuary of the Anil River (ARE) and characterize the bottom sediment. The study area is influenced by a tropical climate and semidiurnal macrotidal regime. Sampling of the surface water and sediment was performed in the main channel at six sampling stations distributed along the estuary in the rainy period (May 9th) and dry period (October 5th) during the spring. Physical variables were collected with the aid of a HANNA HI-8424 multi-parameter probe (water temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity) and YSI CTD (conductivity, temperature, and depth) probe. A van Veen dredge was used for the collection of bottom sediment from the main channel. The sedimentological results were heterogeneous. Grain size ranged from very fine to medium sand. Dissolved nutrients in the ARE had different sources depending on the season. Continental and fluvial inputs, evidenced by salinity values, governed the distribution of nutrients in the rainy period (January to June), whereas nutrient concentrations were related to the recycling of organic material in the estuary in the dry season (July to December). The considerable presence of sand in the main channel indicates that the sediments available in ARE are exposed to intense hydrodynamics. The distribution of nutrients and the grain size revealed the occurrence of different sources in the estuary according to the rainfall regime and the intense hydrodynamics of tidal currents (semidiurnal macrotidal).

ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to analyse the composition and spatiotemporal distribution of the benthic macrofauna in the estuary of the Perizes River (state of Maranhão, Brazil). Biological and environmental samples were collected at five sampling sites along the estuary during six campaigns covering the months of September, October and November 2016 (dry period) and February, March and April 2017 (wet period). Sampling was performed with a van Veen grab sampler (682cm2). Environmental variables as temperature, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen, saturation and water transparency were measured and related to the biological data at each sampling site. After collection the samples were sieved through a 0.5 mm mesh and the organisms fixed in a 10% formaline solution. A total of 35,597 individuals belonging to 84 taxa were identified, corresponding to Insecta, Mollusca, Crustacea, Annelida, Nematoda, Nemertea, Sipuncula and Collembola. Polychaeta showed the greatest species richness, while Tanaidacea were the most abundant. No gradient was found throughout the sampling sites with regard to the environmental variables, but marked differences were found in the temporal distribution. The temporal distribution of the benthic macrofauna was influenced by salinity and rainfall. Oligochaeta and Tanaidacea were abundant at all sampling sites. Acari were abundant in the inner portion of the estuary, while the number of Ostracoda was very high in the outer portion. The structure of the macrobenthic community differed in composition from the majority of the studies on estuaries, with the dominance of Tanaidacea and Oligochaeta. The higher abundance of Tanaidacea is related to environments rich in fine sediments with organic matter and the occurrence of this characteristics was determinant for the distribution of other taxa. The results indicate that the wet period favours the establishment of the benthic community, as evidenced by the increase in diversity and equitability.

Resumo A corvina, Micropogonias furnieri, é explotada no Maranhão, Brasil, ressaltando a necessidade de programas de manutenção de estoques naturais desta espécie para auxiliar na gestão deste recurso explorado. O objetivo do presente estudo foi o de adquirir informações sobre as características reprodutivas (índice gonadossomático e fator de condição) e também sobre a distribuição de comprimento e relação peso-comprimento da espécie. Os peixes foram capturados na Baía dos Lençóis, no estado do Maranhão (Amazônia Oriental) entre junho de 2010 e julho de 2011. Um total de 570 indivíduos foram capturados (318 machos e 252 fêmeas). Os valores de comprimento apresentaram diferença entre os sexos, com fêmeas sendo maiores que os machos. A proporção entre os sexos indicaram uma tendência para as fêmeas serem mais abundantes na estação chuvosa (primeiro semestre), enquanto os machos predominaram na estação seca (segundo semestre). A relação peso-comprimento indicou crescimento alométrico negativo para ambos os sexos. A análise da variação do fator de condição sugere valores mais baixos coincidindo com os resultados mais elevados para a relação gonadossomática, apresentando-se como um bom indicador reprodutivo de M. furnieri na região.

Abstract The whitemouth croaker, Micropogonias furnieri, which is exploited off the state of Maranhão, Brazil, reinforces the need for maintenance programs of natural stocks of this species to assist in the management of this exploited resource. The aim of the present study was to describe aspects regarding its reproductive characteristics (gonadosomatic index and condition factor) and also the length distribution and weight-length relationships. The fish were caught in Lençóis Bay in the state of Maranhão (eastern Amazon) between June 2010 and July 2011. A total of 570 individuals were caught (318 males and 252 females). Differences in length were found between the sexes, with females larger than males. The sex ratio indicated a tendency for females to be more abundant in the rainy season (first semester), whereas males predominated in the dry season (second semester). The weight-length relationship indicated negative allometric growth for both sexes. The analysis of the variation in the condition factor suggests that lower values coincided with higher gonadosomatic index values and that this factor is a good reproductive indicator for M. furnieri in the region.

Resumo As intensas intervenções antrópicas na zona costeira fizeram surgir, nas últimas décadas, graves problemas de assoreamento e erosão nessas áreas. Neste cenário, enquadra-se a embocadura estuarina de São Luís, formada pela foz dos rios Anil e Bacanga, que devido a diversas interferências, vem sofrendo alterações nos processos de transporte e deposição. Em função de tais alterações, realizou-se o presente estudo que objetivou avaliar a evolução e estimar as taxas de assoreamento na referida área, assim como verificar as principais influências antrópicas associadas ao processo. Analisou-se a evolução morfológica a partir da digitalização e vetorização das cartas náuticas de 1947 e 1966, levantamentos batimétricos realizados em 2006, e fotos aéreas datadas de 2011. Os resultados evidenciaram um processo de preenchimento sedimentar que coincide com as intervenções que ocorreram na bacia dos rios Anil e Bacanga, com estimativas de volume assoreado na ordem de 8,5x106 m3, no período de 1944 a 2011 (64 anos), com taxa de 1,6 cm ano-1. Esses processos estiveram associados principalmente à construção da barragem do Bacanga e atividades de aterramento para construção de avenidas e expansão de bairros. A avaliação dos resultados demonstra intenso e avançado processo de preenchimento sedimentar na região da Embocadura Estuarina de São Luís, inclusive com taxas proporcionais superiores às registradas em outros estuários semelhantes do planeta, impondo a necessidade de ações corretivas e aplicação de políticas de gestão costeira para a área.

Abstract In recent decades, intense human intervention in the coastal zone has given rise to severe siltation and erosion problems. This scenario is located the São Luís tidal inlet, formed by the mouths of the Anil and Bacanga rivers which due to various kinds of interference have been changing their sediment transport and deposition processes. With these changes in mind, this study sought to evaluate the evolution of the siltation and sedimentation rates in this area, as well as the main anthropogenic influences associated with this process. The methodology consisted in verifying the morphological evolution on the basis of the scanning and vectorization of nautical charts of 1947 and 1966, bathymetric surveys conducted in 2006, and aerial photos dating from 2011. The results show a silting up process coincident with interventions that occurred in the Anil and Bacanga river basins, with a volume of silt estimated at 8.5x106 m3, over the period from 1944 to 2011 (64 years), at a rate of 1.6 cm.yr-1. These processes are associated mainly with the construction of the Bacanga dam and land reclamation projects undertaken for the purpose of providing new areas for urban expansion. The evaluation of the results showed intense and advanced silting up of the São Luís tidal inlet, at rates proportionally greater than those of other estuaries, calling for corrective actions and the implementation of coastal management policies for this area.
