Abstract The current study focuses on the evaluation of culture parameters on the enzymatic hydrolysis of Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam flour by Candida homilentoma strains. A 2-factor-5-level CCRD was used to evaluate the effect of pH and temperature on the hydrolysis process. For the S-47 strain, pH and both studied parameters were significant at 48 h and 96 h, respectively. Regarding S-81 strain, temperature was the only factor affecting the process, at 96 hours. The regression models were significant, and no lack of fit was observed for them.

ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: This study aimed to determine the frequencies of bacterial isolates cultured from diabetic foot infections and assess their resistance and susceptibility to commonly used antibiotics.METHODS: This prospective study included 41 patients with diabetic foot lesions. Bacteria were isolated from foot lesions, and their antibiotic susceptibility pattern was determined using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method and/or broth method [minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)].RESULTS: The most common location of ulceration was the toe (54%), followed by the plantar surface (27%) and dorsal portion (19%). A total of 89 bacterial isolates were obtained from 30 patients. The infections were predominantly due to Gram-positive bacteria and polymicrobial bacteremia. The most commonly isolated Gram-positive bacteria were Staphylococcus aureus, followed by Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus agalactiae, and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The most commonly isolated Gram-negative bacteria were Proteus spp. and Enterobacterspp., followed by Escherichia coli, Pseudomonasspp., and Citrobacterspp. Nine cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) had cefoxitin resistance, and among these MRSA isolates, 3 were resistant to vancomycin with the MIC technique. The antibiotic imipenem was the most effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and gentamicin was effective against Gram-negative bacteria.CONCLUSIONS: The present study confirmed the high prevalence of multidrug-resistant pathogens in diabetic foot ulcers. It is necessary to evaluate the different microorganisms infecting the wound and to know the antibiotic susceptibility patterns of the isolates from the infected wound. This knowledge is crucial for planning treatment with the appropriate antibiotics, reducing resistance patterns, and minimizing healthcare costs.

Objetivou-se conhecer a atividade de Lafoensia pacari e a de Brossimum gaudichaudii, sobre leveduras do gênero Candida isoladas da mucosa vaginal. As leveduras foram isoladas a partir de esfregaço de mucosa vaginal de mulheres com ou sem sintomatologia. Realizou-se os testes de susceptibilidade em duplicata para 34 linhagens de Candida frente aos extratos brutos das espécies vegetais, nas concentrações de 50, 100 e 200 mg.mL-1. Consideraram-se como ativos os extratos que produziram halos de inibição com média a partir de 10 mm. Evidenciou-se atividade antifúngica de B. gaudichaudii na concentração de 200 mg.mL-1, enquanto que a de L. pacari mostrou-se ativo a 50 mg.mL-1. A atividade dos extratos vegetais estudados destacou-se em relação à Nistatina creme (100.000UI/4g) utilizada como controle.

The yeasts were obtained from swabs of women with or without symptoms. Susceptibility testing in duplicate was carried out for 34 strains of Candida compared to crude extracts of plant species at concentrations of 50, 100 and 200 mg.mL-1. Extracts that produced inhibition zones with an average of over 10 mm were considered to be active. Antifungal activity of B. gaudichaudii at a concentration of 200-mg.mL-1 was proven, while that of L. pacari was found to be active at 50 mg.mL-1. The activity of plant extracts was revealed compared to Nystatin cream (100.000UI/4g) used for control purposes.

Ethanol is the most suitable substitute for oil-based fuels. The performance of the fermentation is affected by several factors, therefore the aim of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of the fermentation of a hydrolyzed must of sweet potato using three strains of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It was also evaluated the effect of three forms of the processes conduction in the fermentation yield, efficiency and viability of yeast at the end process. Among the parameters evaluated, only the cell viability showed significant difference. The strain PE-2 would be the most suitable for the fermentation of the hydrolysed sweet potato.

Foram analisadas 98 amostras de polpas de frutas congeladas de 8 sabores diferentes, comercializadas em uma feira livre da cidade de Palmas-TO. Foram determinados o pH das polpas, Número Mais Provável de coliformes totais e termotolerantes (NMP.g-1) e Unidades Formadoras de Colônia de bolores e leveduras (UFC.g-1). O pH médio das polpas variou entre 2,5 e 4,8. Apenas 5 amostras (4,3%) apresentaram resultados positivos para coliformes totais e duas confirmaram a presença de coliformes termotolerantes e E. coli, com valores entre 0,3 e 0,9 NMP.g-1. Noventa por cento das amostras apresentaram contaminação por bolores e leveduras, sendo que as contagens variaram de < 10 até 6,2 x 10(4) UFC.g-1. Dentre as amostras que apresentaram bolores e leveduras, 29,6 % não se enquadraram nos padrões estabelecidos pela legislação em vigor.

Ninety-eight frozen pulps samples of eight different flavors commercialized in the city of Palmas, State of Tocantins, Brazil, were submitted to pH and microbiological analysis. The microbiological analysis included counts for total and termotolerant coliforms (MPN.g-1) and the determination of moulds and yeasts (CFU.g-1). The pH was rate was 2.5 and 4.8. Five samples (4.3%) showed coliform contamination and two of them presented E. coli showing values between 0.3 and 0.9 MPN.g-1. 90% of the samples showed levels of moulds and yeast ranging from <10 to 6,2 x 10(4) CFU.g-1. Among them, 29.6% of the samples were considered unacceptable for consumption according to the legislation.
