ABSTRACT The aim of this population-based study is to analyze the association of loneliness and physical health, pain, health-related quality of life, mental health, cognitive performance, morbidity, and use of health services. Based on the census, a stratified random sampling was chosen. A telephone interview was conducted with 2,060 people over 65 years old, using the GHQ-12 and the COOP-Wonca. An association of loneliness with General Mental Health (GHQ-12) was found, OR = 1.43 (1.34, 1.52) and depression, OR = 2.34 (1.54, 3.53). In cognitive performance the highest effect variable was “memory problems disturb your daily life”, OR = 3.11 (1.25, 7.72); illnesses-related variables: the highest effect variables were perception of health status, OR = 1.37 (1.13, 1. 67) and quality of life (COOP-Wonca), OR = 3.03 (2.32, 3.94); pain-related variables: the highest effect variables were non-localized pain, OR = 2.67 (1.87, 3.83) and arthritis/arthrosis, OR = 1.94 (1.38, 2.72); impaired vision, OR = 2. 62 (1.84, 3.73) and hearing, OR = 1.81 (1.21, 2.72). It is concluded that loneliness is a complex phenomenon associated with variables of different nature. This fact should be taken into account at the time of planning possible solutions.

RESUMEN El objetivo de este estudio poblacional es analizar la asociación de la soledad no deseada (SND) con salud física, dolor, calidad de vida relacionada con la salud, salud mental, rendimiento cognitivo, morbilidad y uso de servicios de salud. Recurriendo al censo, se realizó un muestreo aleatorio estratificado en Madrid. Se llevó a cabo una entrevista telefónica a 2,060 mayores de 65 años utilizando el GHQ-12 y el COOP-Wonca. Encontramos asociación de la SND y la salud mental general (GHQ-12), OR = 1.43 (1.34, 1.52) y depresión, OR = 2.34 (1.54, 3.53). En rendimiento cognitivo, la variable de mayor efecto fue “los problemas de memoria alteran su vida cotidiana”, OR = 3.11 (1.25, 7.72); variables relacionadas con enfermedad: las de mayor efecto fueron “percepción del estado de salud”, OR = 1.37 (1.13, 1.67) y calidad de vida (COOP-Wonca), OR = 3.03 (2.32, 3.94); variables de dolor: dolor general, OR = 2.67 (1.87, 3.83) y artritis/artrosis, OR = 1.94 (1.38, 2.72); dificultades para ver, OR = 2.62 (1.84, 3.73) y oír, OR = 1.81 (1.21, 2.72). Se concluye que la SND es una situación compleja, lo que debe considerarse al programar soluciones que sean efectivas.

ABSTRACT In the expressions of government political communication in Cuba, it is perceived a poor complementation with design management and a scant knowledge of the potentialities of this activity as a source of value, material and symbolic, and as an asset of strategic differentiation. Despite being typified the conditions of insertion of the design in the economic, productive and services framework, in Cuba there are multiple factors that hinder the full integration of this activity into the organizations, a phenomenon that include the central state administration estructures in its communicative acts. Particularly in government institutions, with a role as political communicators, multiple asymmetries are evident for the achievement of said insertion and coherent projection.

RESUMEN En las expresiones de comunicación política de gobierno en Cuba se percibe una insuficiente complementación con la gestión de diseño y un escaso conocimiento de las potencialidades de esta actividad como fuente generadora de valor, material y simbólico, y como de activo de diferenciación estratégica. A pesar de estar tipificadas las condiciones de inserción del diseño en el entramado económico, productivo y de servicios, en Cuba existen múltiples factores que dificultan la integración cabal de esta actividad a las organizaciones, fenómeno al que no son ajenos los Organismos de la Administración Central del Estado en su actuar comunicativo. Particularmente en las instituciones de gobierno, con un rol como comunicadores políticos, se evidencian múltiples asimetrías para el logro de la inserción y proyección coherente de esta actividad; por lo que resulta necesario determinar las dificultades de la gestión de diseño para la comunicación política de gobierno en Cuba.

ABSTRACT There are previous cytological studies in Alstroemeria pelegrina, an endemic species of Chile, but none of them clearly indicates the location of the material studied. A population of Alstroemeria pelegrina, collected from Los Molles (Region of Valparaíso), was analyzed cytotaxonomically. It was found that this population presents a 2n = 16 chromosomes and a caryotypic haploid formula 3m + 1sm + 2st + 2t. By comparing the biometric data and asymmetry indices of the karyotype of this population with previously published data, it is concluded that it is definitely the same species.

RESUMEN Existen estudios citológicos previos de Alstroemeria pelegrina, especie endémica de Chile, pero en ninguno de ellos se menciona con claridad la localidad del material estudiado. Se analizó citotaxonómicamente una población de esta especie, proveniente de Los Molles, Región de Valparaíso. Se encontró que esta población presenta un 2n = 2x = 16 cromosomas y una fórmula cariotípica haploide 3m + 1sm + 2st + 2t. Al comparar los datos biométricos e índices de asimetría del cariotipo de esta población con los datos publicados anteriormente, se concluye que efectivamente se trata de la misma especie.

ABSTRACT It is unknown if any Juan Fernández native plants may tolerate the aggressive invasion of the introduced shrub Ugni molinae. We found sixteen native species growing within these highly invaded patches. The endemic shrub Gaultheria racemulosa (syn. Pernettya rigida) was the most important species according to vegetation cover in invaded patches, therefore relevant in future control management options.

ABSTRACT Alstroemeria pulchra is a Chilean species where 3 subspecies are recognized: subsp. lavandulacea, maxima and pulchra. The chromosomes of populations of the subspecies lavandulacea and pulchra were studied and a marked size polymorphism was observed among the homologous of the first pair of chromosomes. This size polymorphism among homologous is one of the rarest reported thus far in the Angiosperm literature.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Working with and for the community allows integrating the perspective of people regarding their health status, the benefits of their environment, government and health systems, identify problems that affect the well-being of the people who form it . Objective: To describe the experience of applying a community diagnosis under the nursing model of Elizabeth Anderson in community "Los Microbuseros" of Peñalolén, Santiago de Chile. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study with a sample of 285 people from 63 families. To obtain the information a survey was applied and processed in the SPSS program. The variables studied were the 8 subsystems of the Elizabeth Anderson model. Results: Diabetes Mellitus II presents 34.92 %, arterial hypertension 42.85 %, sedentarism 67.36 %, smoking 31.22 %, does not participate in community organizations 55.55 %, does not use municipal programs 96.82 % Does not receive information on government health programs, 80,95 % of families increased alcohol and drug consumption on public roads in the last year 95.23 %, did not know the number of police security in the sector 74,60 %. 80.85 % did not know the cardiovascular health program, 96.82 % did not go to the Health Center. Conclusion: The Anderson model allows valuing the community in a holistic way, showing that health can be influenced by other systems such as economy, safety, education, among others. Therefore, the need to strengthen the protective factors and intervene on the risks to improve the quality of life of the community arises.

RESUMEN Introducción: Trabajar con y para la comunidad permite integrar la perspectiva de las personas respecto a su estado de salud, los beneficios que otorga su entorno, el gobierno y los sistemas de salud, identificar problemas que afectan el bienestar integral de las personas que la forman. Objetivo: Describir la experiencia de aplicar un diagnóstico comunitario bajo el modelo de enfermería de Elizabeth Anderson. Métodos: Estudio descriptivo de corte transversal, con una muestra de 285 personas de 63 familias en la comunidad “Los Microbuseros” de Peñalolén, Santiago de Chile. Para obtener la información se aplicó una encuesta que se procesó en el programa SPSS. Las variables estudiadas fueron los 8 subsistemas del modelo Elizabeth Anderson. Resultados: De la muestra, padecían diabetes mellitus II el 34,92 %, hipertensión arterial el 42,85 %, sedentarismo el 67,36 % y tabaquismo el 31,22 %; el 55,55 % no participaba en organizaciones comunitarias; el 96,82 % no usaba programas municipales, el 80,95 % de las familias no recibía información sobre programas gubernamentales de salud, el 95,23 % aumentó el consumo de alcohol y drogas en la vía pública en el último año, el 74,60 % desconocía el número de seguridad policial del sector. El 80,85 % no conocía el programa de salud cardiovascular, el 96,82 % no acudía al Centro de salud. Conclusión: El modelo de Anderson permite valorar la comunidad de manera holística, evidenciar que la salud puede ser influenciada por otros sistemas como la economía, la seguridad, la educación, entre otros. Por ello surge la necesidad de fortalecer los factores protectores e intervenir sobre los riesgos para mejorar la calidad de vida de la comunidad.

Abstract Alstroemeria L. (Alstroemeriaceae) represents one of the most diverse genera of vascular plants in Chile. It contains approximately 54 taxa, 40 of which are endemic. The “complex” Alstroemeria magnifica is endemic to Chile, and it comprises four varieties: A. magnifica var. magenta, A. magnifica var. magnifica, A. magnifica var. sierrae, and A. magnifica var. tofoensis. It is distributed from Coquimbo to the Valparaíso Region. We analyzed karyotypes of 10 populations along its natural distribution. All the populations presented an asymmetric karyotype, with 2n = 16 chromosomes but with three different karyotypic formulae. Alstroemeria magnifica var. magnifica and A. magnifica var. sierrae presented the same karyotypic fomula, and A. magnifica var. magenta, and A. magnifica var. tofoensis each had a different formula. The scatter plot among CVCL vs. MCA shows different groupings between populations of the four varieties. Based on the results, it is possible to consider raising Alstroemeria magnifica var. magenta to species level (A. magenta) and A. magnifica var. tofoensis to subspecies level (A. magnifica subsp. tofoensis); A. magnifica var. magnifica and A. magnifica var. sierrae should each remain as varieties. Nevertheless, these taxonomic changes should be considered tentative, as additional sources of evidence become available.

ABSTRACT Alstroemeria L., one of the most diverse genera of the Chilean flora and of high floricultural value, is represented by 35 species, most of them distributed between 28-38° S in the Mediterranean zone of Central Chile. There are 24 complex- forming taxa, of which 18 have conservation problems. One of these complexes is Alstroemeria diluta E. Bayer. with two subspecies: subsp. diluta and subsp. chrysantha Bayer. Alstroemeria diluta grows only in Chile; subsp. diluta is distributed from 34º15'S, Region of O'Higgins, to Cauquenes (36º00'S), Region of Maule, and subsp. chrysantha from 28º08'S, Region of Atacama, to Punta Curaumilla (33º05'S), Region of Valparaíso. A comparative karyotype study was carried out among four populations of A. diluta subsp. diluta and three populations of A. diluta subsp. chrysantha. The seven populations presented an asymmetric karyotype, with 2n = 2x = 16 chromosomes, and with same karyotype formulae: 3m + 1sm + 1st + 3 t. The architecture of the karyotype between the subspecies is the same. The scatter plot among MCA vs. CVCL shows different groupings between populations of the two subspecies, and the total chromosomes length (LTC) is highest in the populations of subsp. chrysantha. According to the results obtained, the populations growing in Valparaíso Region should be considered belong to subsp. diluta.

RESUMEN Alstroemeria L. es uno de los géneros de plantas chilenas más diversos y con un enorme potencial ornamental. Está representado por 35 especies, la mayoría distribuida entre los 28-38° S en la zona mediterránea de Chile central. Se reconocen 24 complejos, de los cuales 18 presentan problemas de conservación. Uno de estos complejos es Alstroemeria diluta E. Bayer. con dos subespecies: subsp. diluta y subsp. chrysantha Bayer. Alstroemeria diluta crece sólo en Chile; la subsp. diluta se distribuye desde los 34º15'S, en la Región de O'Higgins, hasta Cauquenes (36º00'S), en la Región del Maule y la subsp. chrysantha desde los 28º08'S, en la Región de Atacama, hasta Punta Curaumilla (33º05'S), en la Región de Valparaíso. Se realizó un studio comparativo del cariotipo de cuatro poblaciones de A. diluta subsp. diluta y tres poblaciones de A. diluta subsp. chrysantha. Las siete poblaciones analizadas presentaron un cariotipo asimétrico, con un 2n = 2x = 16 cromosomas, y con la misma fórmula cariotípica: 3m + 1sm + 1st + 3 t. La arquitectura del cariotipo entre las subespecies es la misma. El diagrama de dispersión MCA vs CVCL mostró diferentes grupos entre las poblaciones de las dos subespecies y la longitud total diploide de los cromosomas (LTC) fue mayor en las poblaciones de la subsp. chrysantha. Los resultados obtenidos sugieren que las poblaciones distribuidas en la V Región de Valparaíso pertenecen a la subsp. diluta.

Alstroemeria pulchra var. maxima is an endemic Chilean taxon described by R.A. Philippi in 1864, whose taxonomic position is controversial; even though Bayer in 1987 transferred this taxon to A. magnifica with the rank of subspecies, Muñoz & Moreira in 2003 return to the original concept proposed by Philippi. In order to provide a new character to decide if A. pulchra var. maxima is a member of the A. magnifica complex or must remain as a variety of A. pulchra as was originally described, the color of outer, upper inner and lower inner tepals of the flowers of eight populations of Alstroemeria L. belonging to these two endemic Chilean species were analyzed with a spectrophotometer colorimeter Hunterlab Colorquest: five populations of A. magnifica Herbert and three populations of A. pulchra Sims. CIELab coordinates allow to separate A. magnifica from A. pulchra on the basis of the color of the outer and lower inner tepals but not by the color of the upper inner tepals. We conclude that the color of the flower is a new character to confirm that var. maxima belong to A. pulchra, not to the A. magnifica complex.

Alstroemeria pulchra var. maxima es un taxón endémico de Chile descrito por R.A. Philippi en 1864, cuya posición sistemática es controversial; aunque Bayer en 1987 transfiere este taxón a A. magnifica con el rango de subespecie, Muñoz & Moreira en 2003 retoman el concepto original de Philippi. Con el objetivo de proporcionar nuevos caracteres para decidir si A. pulchra var. maxima es un miembro del complejo A. magnifica o debe permanecer como una variedad de A. pulchra como fue originalmente descrita, se analizó el color de los tépalos externos, internos superiores e interno inferior, utilizando un espectrofotómetro colorímetro Hunterlab Colorquest. Se trabajó con flores de ocho poblaciones de Alstroemeria L. pertenecientes a estas dos especies endémicas de Chile: cinco poblaciones de A. magnifica Herbert y tres poblaciones de A. pulchra Sims. Las mediciones en el espacio CIELab permiten distinguir A. magnifica de A. pulchra sobre la base del color de los tépalos externos y del tépalo interno inferior, pero no por el color de los tépalos internos superiores. Se concluye que el color de la flor es un nuevo carácter que confirma que la var. maxima pertenece a A. pulchra y no al complejo A. magnifica.

Inv. Agr. 41(2): 207-214. Critically endangered, Traubia modesta is endemic to Chile and belongs to the family Amaryllidaceae. In this research, a propagation protocol was developed for the in vitro cultivation of vegetative organs for this species. The twin scale explants were cultured in a Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium, supplemented with the growth regulators naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) in different concentrations. Plant preservative mixture (PPM) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) were used as a biocide and an antioxidant, respectively. The results showed high contamination of the bulbs. There were no significant differences between the treatments with plant growth regulators. A multiplication rate of 1.3 - 2.2 for bulbils was achieved, with an average of 28 bulbils per mother bulb. The natural regeneration rate is approximately 1 - 4 bulbils per mother bulb once a year.

Agr. 41(2):207-214. Traubia modesta pertenece a la familia Amaryllidaceae y es endémica de Chile, que se encuentra en la categoría de "en peligro" de extinción. En esta investigación se desarrolló un protocolo de propagación de la especie a través del cultivo in vitro de órganos vegetativos. Se utilizó la técnica de escamas gemelas cultivadas en medio MS suplementado con ANA y BAP en distintas concentraciones, se adicionó PPM como biocida y PVP como compuesto antioxidante. Los resultados obtenidos muestran una alta contaminación en los bulbos. No hubo diferencias significativas entre los tratamientos con reguladores del crecimiento vegetal. Se logró una tasa de multiplicación de microbulbillos de 1,3 a 2,2, donde el promedio de bulbos obtenidos en todos los tratamientos por bulbo madre fue de 28. La regeneración natural es alrededor de 1 a 4 unidades por bulbo madre una vez al año.

The in vitro germination of seeds of Vestiafoetida (Ruiz et Pav.) Hoffmanns. and their multiplication was performed. A 20% in vitro germination was obtained. The best proliferation medium was MS supplemented with BAP (1.0 mg L-1) plus AIB (0.01 mg L-1), with an average of 1.7 new axillary buds per microshoot after two subcultures.

Se evaluó la utilización de desechos agroindustriales: la cascarilla de arroz y el pergamino de café como adsorbentes alternativos para la remoción de ácido acético. Para ello se realizó su caracterización determinando la cantidad de humedad y cenizas, índice de acidez, y el análisis a través de espectrometría de absorción en el infrarrojo y la difracción de rayos X. Se construyeron las isotermas de adsorción de ácido acético sobre cascarilla de arroz, pergamino de café y carbón activado como referencia, mediante el contacto en agitación de soluciones de ácido acético a diferentes concentraciones, realizándose 8 experiencias en las cuales se variaron los factores: tamaño de partícula de los adsorbentes, tratamiento de los materiales adsorbentes, tiempo de agitación y rango de concentraciones de ácido acético. Las isotermas de cascarilla de arroz y pergamino de café se ajustaron al modelo de Langmuir a un rango de concentración de ácido acético entre 0,03 y 0,25 mol/L, 1 hora de agitación y lavados del adsorbente con agua a 70 ºC y bicarbonato de sodio al 5% a 70 ºC. Se concluyó que la adsorción del ácido acético sobre cascarilla de arroz y pergamino de café ocurre mediante la formación de enlaces de hidrógeno entre el ácido y la superficie de estosmateriales gracias a la presencia de celulosa, hemicelulosa, lignina y óxido de silicio en su estructura, alcanzando entre un 40% y 70% de los rendimientos obtenidos con el carbón activado.

The use of agro-industrial waste was evaluated; namely, rice husks and coffee parchment as alternative adsorbents for acetic acid removal. To this end, material characterization was carried out determining the amount of humidity and ashes, the acid value, and by absorption spectrometry analysis in infrared and x-ray diffraction. Isotherms of acetic acid adsorption on rice husks, coffee parchment and activated charcoal as a reference, were constructed, by means of contact in agitation of different concentrations of solutions of acetic acid. Eight experiments were made in which the factors were varied:adsorbents particle size, adsorbent materials treatment, agitation time and rank of acetic acid concentrations. The rice husk isotherms and coffee parchment adjusted to the Langmuir model within a rank of acetic acid concentration between 0.03 and 0.25 mol/L, 1 hour of agitation and water and 5% sodium bicarbonate washings at 70 ºC. It was concluded that adsorption of acetic acid on rice husks and coffee parchment occurs through hydrogen bond formation between the acid and the surface of these materials because of the presence of cellulose, hemicelluloses, lignin and silicon oxide in its structure, reaching between 40% and 70% of the yields obtained with the activated charcoal.
