Abstract The surface runoff in agricultural areas can carry soil chemical elements, causing environmental and economic problems. Nutrient losses through surface runoff can occur in both particulate and dissolved forms, influenced by soil use and management systems. In this context, the objective of this study was to quantify the losses of N (NH4+ and NO3-), P, and K in dissolved and particulate forms in samples from a simulated rainfall event of 60 mm h-1 with a duration of 20 minutes, after the onset of surface runoff. The study was conducted in experimental plots in a randomized block design, with four treatments and two replications. The treatments were defined as T1 (fallow with spontaneous vegetation), T2 (irrigated rice under conventional tillage), T3 (no-tillage irrigated rice in monoculture), and T4 (no-tillage rice in crop rotation). The rainfall was applied in pre-seeding of irrigated rice, crop 2022/2023. The results showed that the highest losses of NH4+ and NO3- occurred in treatments T2 and T3 compared to the others. Regarding nutrient loss, treatments T1 and T2 showed the highest losses of P and K, with a greater presence in the soil fraction (particulate).

Resumo O escoamento superficial em áreas agrícolas pode carrear elementos químicos do solo, causando problemas ambientais e econômicos. As perdas de nutrientes por escoamento superficial podem ocorrer tanto na forma particulada quanto dissolvida, sendo influenciadas pelo uso e sistema de preparo do solo. Nesse contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar as perdas de N (NH4+ e NO3-), P e K nas formas dissolvida e particulada, em amostras de um evento de chuva simulada de 60 mm/h com duração de 20 minutos, após o início do escoamento superficial. O estudo foi conduzido em parcelas experimentais em delineamento de blocos casualizados, com quatro tratamentos e duas repetições. Os tratamentos foram definidos como T1 (pousio com vegetação espontânea), T2 (arroz irrigado em preparo convencional), T3 (semeadura direta em monocultivo de arroz irrigado) e T4 (semeadura direta em rotação de culturas). A chuva foi aplicada em pré-semeadura de arroz irrigado, safra 2022/2023. Os resultados evidenciaram que as maiores perdas de NH4+ e NO3- ocorreram nos tratamentos T2 e T3 em comparação com os demais. Em relação à perda de nutrientes, os tratamentos que apresentaram as maiores perdas de P e K foram T1 e T2, com maior presença na fração do solo (particulado).

RESUMO: O arroz daninho (Oryza sativa L.) é a principal planta daninha do arroz cultivado e, devido à similaridade genética com a cultura, são poucas as alternativas de controle. Uma possibilidade são os sistemas de cultivo, em razão da influência na emergência e sobrevivência da espécie no banco de sementes do solo. Diante disso, o trabalho objetivou avaliar a longevidade e a distribuição das sementes de arroz daninho no perfil do solo, após 22 anos de cultivo, sob diferentes sistemas. Os tratamentos foram arranjados em esquema fatorial, em que o fator A foi composto por três sistemas de cultivo, realizados consecutivamente durante 22 anos, sendo esses: semeadura direta (SD), sistema convencional (SC) e pré-germinado (PG); e, o fator B composto por quatro profundidades de amostragem: 0-2, 2-5, 5-10 e 10-20 cm. As variáveis avaliadas foram: o número de sementes íntegras e deterioradas m-2; e, a porcentagem de viabilidade. Não foi verificado efeito dos sistemas até 5 cm, mas a 5-10 cm SC e PG mostraram maior quantidade de sementes, e PG a 10-20 cm. A SD proporcionou diminuição de sementes íntegras conforme aumentou a profundidade de amostragem, enquanto o sistema PG elimina menos sementes do banco de sementes do solo. Os sistemas SC e PG distribuem sementes viáveis no perfil do solo de 0 a 20 cm de profundidade. Após 22 anos, nos três sistemas de cultivo há sementes de arroz daninho viáveis até 10 cm de profundidade, sendo igual a quantidade de sementes viáveis até cinco centímetros de profundidade.

ABSTRACT: Weedy rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the most problematic weed in rice fields due to the few control management alternatives to control it, because of the genetic similarity with the crop. Different cropping systems (regarding soil preparation before sowing) have been used as options to control the persistence and emergence of the weed seedbank. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the longevity and vertical distribution of weedy rice seeds in the soil seedbank after 22 years of different rice cropping systems. Data was analyzed as a two-way factorial, with cropping systems carried out for 22 years [no-tillage (NT), conventional tillage (CT), wet direct-seeded (WDS)] as one factor and sampling depth (0-2, 2-5, 5-10 and 10-20 cm) as the other factor. The number of whole and deteriorated seeds per m-2 were assessed, as well as the viability (%). No effect between the systems were detected up to 5 cm, however at 5-10 cm CT and WDS showed higher amount of seeds, and WDS at 10-20 cm. As the sampling depth increased, NT showed fewer amount of seeds, while less reduction of the soil seedbank was observed in WDS. CT and WDS spread viable seeds in the soil profile from 0 to 20 cm depth. After 22 years there are viable weedy rice seeds up to 10 cm of depth in the three cropping systems and there is no difference among them up to 5 cm of depth, demonstrating the serious problem of the seedbank for this species.

ABSTRACT Soils of natural grasslands in the Amazon region play an essential role in local food production and preservation of the Amazon rainforest. However, in general, these soils have high acidity, which limits irrigated rice production. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of liming and irrigation management on the dynamics of soil reduction, nutrients in the soil solution, nutrition, and aboveground plant biomass in natural fields soil in southern Amazonia, Brazil. The experiment evaluated the correction factors for soil acidity and irrigation management, flooded and saturated soil. The experiment was carried in pots in a greenhouse. Liming reduced the Eh of the soil and had a higher influence than the soil irrigation condition. Liming also had a higher influence on soil pH than irrigation conditions. Liming and saturated soil had the lowest Fe content in the soil solution. Higher Ca and Mg contents were observed in the soil solution under liming and flood irrigation. ABSTRACT Paddy rice production based on traditional soil management emits large amounts of methane (CH4) into the atmosphere. This study assessed the potential of no-tillage (NT) and winter cover crops (WCC) to mitigate net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a subtropical paddy rice ecosystem. A long-term (20-yrs) experiment was evaluated regarding the effect of NT combined with winter fallow or three WCC (ryegrass, white oat, and birdsfoot trefoil) on seasonal CH4 -C and nitrous oxide (N2O-N) emissions and on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in comparison to conventional tillage (CT) under winter fallow in a Gleysol of Southern Brazil. The changes in SOC were used as a proxy for annual net carbon dioxide (CO2) exchanges in the soil-atmosphere, taking the CT treatment as a reference. The GHG balance (summation of CH4 , N2O and CO2 emissions multiplied by their global warming potential of 34, 298, and 1, respectively) and emissions intensity of GHG emissions were calculated. Across winter managements, NT decreased 25 % of GHG emissions in comparison to CT system. This effect was mainly related to the decrease of seasonal CH4 -C emissions (31-113 kg ha-1) and by promoting SOC accumulation (0.45-0.65 Mg ha-1yr-1) in comparison to CT system, since soil N2 O-N emission was not affected by management practices. Increased soil CH4 -C emissions offset the positive effect of WCC on SOC accumulation compared with winter fallow. Based on our findings, NT mitigates net GHG emissions in subtropical paddy rice ecosystems, but no additional effect is observed combining NT with WCC. RESUMO: O nitrogênio é o elemento fornecido pelo solo que mais limita o desenvolvimento do arroz irrigado. A hipótese do presente trabalho é que para atender a uma maior demanda de nitrogênio pela planta devido ao maior potencial de rendimento, não é necessário aplicar uma dose maior de fertilizante nitrogenado. O objetivo do estudo foi analisar o efeito do potencial produtivo de cultivares de arroz na resposta ao nitrogênio. Um experimento de campo foi instalado no Rio Grande do Sul, sul do Brasil. Os fatores de tratamento avaliados foram cultivar, com ciclos médio e curto sob doses de 0 e 150 kg N ha-1. Foram analisadas curvas de crescimento, marcha de absorção, teor de nitrogênio e índice de área foliar ao longo do tempo, área radicular e produtividade de grãos. A cultivar de ciclo médio apresenta maior potencial de exploração do ambiente quando comparada a cultivar de arroz de ciclo curto, tanto pela maior área foliar quanto pela maior área superficial da raiz por área. Assim, a cultivar de ciclo médio tem maior capacidade de exploração de recursos e maior eficiência no aproveitamento do nitrogênio, o que é de grande importância para uma agricultura mais sustentável.

ABSTRACT: Nitrogen (N) is the element supplied by the soil that limits the development of irrigated rice. The hypothesis of the present is that to meet higher demand for N by the plant due to the higher potential yield, it is not necessary to apply a higher dose of N fertilizer. This studyevaluated the efficiency of N utilization, the rate of growth and accumulations of N by plants and the grain yield of two rice cultivars, short cycle and medium cycle, with and without N fertilization. A field experiment was installed in the Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. The treatment factors evaluated were cultivar, with medium and short cycles, with doses of 0 and 150 kg N ha-1. Growth curves, absorption rate, N content and leaf area index over time, root area and grain yield were analyzed. The medium cycle cultivar has a greater potential to explore the environment when compared to the short cycle rice cultivar, both for greater leaf area and root area per cultivation area, as well as for longer exploration times. Thus, the medium cycle cultivar has greater N utilization efficiency and higher grain yield.

ABSTRACT Bases are chemical species that donate electrons, accept protons, or release hydroxyls (OH–) in aqueous solution. In Soil Science, “base saturation”, “exchangeable bases” or “basic cations” has been widely used to distinguish Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, and K+ from H+ and Al3+ cations. This terminology is confusing since none of these cations are truly a base in chemistry sense. However, in the absence of the proposition of a correct term, the term “base saturation” remains in use nowadays, causing confusion among students, professionals, and even among professors and researchers in Soil Science, as it leads to the erroneous interpretation that the soil acidity can be corrected by adding these cations to the soil. Here, we present the historical background of this nomenclature and a theoretical foundation that justifies the abolition of the use of these terms in Soil Science. We consider that the most correct is to call it “Ca-Mg-K-Na saturation”, which, despite being long, would refer directly and without any misinterpretation of the terminology. In Soil Fertility, the “base saturation” is often calculated only as a function of the sum of Ca, Mg, and K, since the Na content is negligible in most tropical and subtropical soils. Thus, one could use the term “Ca-Mg-K saturation”. Likewise, it is also suggested to abolish the use of the term “sum of bases” and use the term “sum of Ca-Mg-K” or “sum of Ca-Mg-K-Na” instead when necessary.

ABSTRACT: No-tillage (NT) has been one of the main advances related to soil management in Brazilian agriculture in the last 30 years. However, its full adoption in lowland areas that are traditionally cultivated with flooded rice is still incipient (<5 %). The main reasons are associated with the soil hydromorphic condition and the management of highly recalcitrant residual crop biomass, demanding soil disturbance even occasionally. This review presents a historical survey about the soil management systems utilized in lowland areas in southern Brazil, emphasizing the experiences of NT adoption in areas with flooded rice. Results from studies focused on the main changes in chemical, physical, and microbiological soil properties due to NT adoption were addressed, as well as the NT effects on greenhouse gas emissions and crop yields. Finally, the main challenges and prospects for NT were discussed considering new emerging scenarios for flooded rice production in lowlands, especially soybean rotation and integrated agricultural production systems. No-tillage can increase the soil organic carbon, the cation exchangeable capacity and tends to promote the accumulation of nutrients as nitrogen in surface layers. Improvements in soil aggregation, porosity and water availability are usually observed in NT, but only if medium or long-term trials are considered. NT favors microbial activity in the shallower soil layer by promoting microbial biomass carbon (+45 %), microbial biomass nitrogen (+54 %) and basal respiration (+54 %) compared to conventional tillage (CT), while the activity of extracellular enzymes also may be stimulated. Crop yield tends to be similar among the soil managements systems over time. Seasonal CH4 emissions might be reduced by 21 % with NT adoption without increasing N2O. Plant breeding and geotechnology advances associated with soybean market valuation intensified the introduction of this crop in paddy fields. The main challenge for the full adoption of NT is the need for soil tillage after rice harvesting to correct soil surface irregularities or manage rice straw. In the future, advances in plant breeding and drainage techniques probably will favor the expansion of NT in southern Brazil lowlands. The traditional system of flooded rice cultivation, based on CT and monoculture associated with beef cattle under extensive grazing, is no longer viable and will not be further established.

RESUMO A presença de palhada de plantas de cobertura pode causar mudanças significativas na atividade e população microbiana com efeitos ambientais e na dinâmica de C e N no solo, fornecendo informações importantes para o planejamento do uso adequado da terra no Cerrado brasileiro. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da palhada de plantas de cobertura sobre os atributos microbianos do solo, e na qualidade da matéria orgânica. As unidades experimentais consistiram de potes plásticos acondicionados com 100 g de solo misturados com palhada de plantas de cobertura. Os tratamentos foram distribuídos em um DIC, em esquema fatorial 7 x 7 + 1, com sete tipos de palhadas, avaliados aos 7, 14, 21, 28, 42, 63 e 105 dias após a incubação, e controle sem palhada, com três repetições. O qCO2 variou de 0,1 (Crotalaria spectabilis aos 14 dias) a 5,1% (Cajanus cajan 'IAPAR 43' aos 42 dias). Os reservatórios de carbono e nitrogênio orgânicos são afetados de diferentes formas pelas palhadas de leguminosas e gramíneas em cada data de avaliação. A incorporação de Brachiaria brizantha e Mucuna aterrima tiveram impactos positivos nos atributos microbianos até o 21º dia de incubação (qCO2, Cmic and Nmic), com baixa liberação de CO2 e aumento da população microbiana. Todas as espécies avaliadas apresentaram potencial para serem usadas em sistema de rotação, tornando viável para o plantio direto na região do Cerrado piauiense. Contudo, é recomendado a seleção de espécies de acordo com o propósito específico.

ABSTRACT The cover crop straw may cause changes in the microbial activity and population, with repercussions on environmental changes and on the C and N dynamics, providing important information for the planning of adequate land use in the Cerrado. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of straw of cover crops on the soil microbial attributes and quality of organic matter. Experimental units consisted of 100 g of sieved soil placed in small plastic cups mixed with straw from cover plants. Treatments were distributed in a CRD, in a factorial scheme of 7 x 7 + 1, with seven types of straw, evaluated at 7, 14, 21, 28, 42, 63 and 105 days after incubation, and control without straw, with three replicates. The qCO2 ranged from 0.1 (Crotalaria spectabilis at 14 days) to 5.1% (Cajanus cajan ‘IAPAR 43’ at 42 days). The organic carbon and nitrogen reservoir are differently affected by straw of legumes and grasses on the dates. The incorporation of Brachiaria brizantha and Mucuna aterrima had a positive impact on the microbial attributes until the 21st incubation (qCO2, Cmic and Nmic), with little loss of carbon dioxide and growth of the microbial population. All the evaluated species presented a potential to be used in crop rotation systems, enabling no-tillage systems in the Cerrado of Piauí. However, it is recommended to select species according to specific purposes. Thus, the use of cover crops is an important tool for increasing the biological quality of Brazilian northeastern cerrado soils.

ABSTRACT The two main bottlenecks for a successful phytoremediation program are the metal availability in soil and the metal uptake and transfer to shoots of high biomass plants. Several agronomical practices have been tested to boost the bioavailability of metals in soils and accumulation in plants. Here we assessed the feasibility of plant-growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) isolated from a site contaminated by gold ore processing activities to assist the phytoremediation of As, Cd, and Pb by Sorghum bicolor and mitigate the metal toxicity in plants. The bacteria Kluyvera intermedia, Klebsiella oxytoca, and Citrobacter murliniae were evaluated in single, double, and triple inoculations. They are regarded as metal resistant and were isolated from the rhizosphere of species naturally growing on the metal contaminated site. The treatments comprised two soils (contaminated and non-contaminated) and single (K. intermedia, K. oxytoca, or C. murliniae) or multiple inoculations (K. intermedia + K. oxytoca; K. intermedia + C. murliniae; K. oxytoca + C. murliniae; K. intermedia + K. oxytoca + C. murliniae). Plants were grown for 42 days after inoculation. The results showed that the PGPB K. oxytoca and the combination of K. intermedia + K. oxytoca and K. intermedia + C. murliniae were able to mitigate the metal toxicity in the contaminated soil and hence increase the shoot biomass, with implications to the effectiveness of phytoextraction. The sorghum ability to translocate Cd to shoots in the contaminated soil was enhanced through the single inoculation with K. oxytoca, C. murliniae, and K. oxytoca, as well as by the joint-inoculation with K. oxytoca + C. murliniae, and K. intermedia + K. oxytoca + C. murliniae. Higher accumulation of metals in shoots is a crucial factor in successful phytoextraction. Arsenic and Pb, on the other hand, had their uptake and concentration in roots stimulated by the inoculation. Therefore, regarding these two metals, phytostabilization programs could benefit from the use of the bacteria studied here.

RESUMO: Os solos de várzea são caracterizados pela alta suscetibilidade à saturação por água. Esta condição anaeróbica é geralmente encontrada em solos arrozeiros e altera o processo de decomposição dos compostos orgânicos do solo. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a atividade microbiana e enzimática de um solo de várzea sob diferentes teores de umidade no solo. Um Planossolo historicamente cultivado com arroz irrigado foi utilizado para avaliar a atividade microbiana e enzimática em tratamentos com diferentes níveis de umidade do solo, sendo: i) 60% de capacidade de campo (CC) (60%CC); ii) 100% da CC (100%CC); iii) solo inundado com uma camada de água de 2 cm acima da superfície do solo; e iv) solo mantido a 60%CC com inundação após 29 dias da incubação. A maior atividade microbiana do solo foi observada no tratamento 100%CC, sendo 41% maior que o tratamento 60%CC e 2% maior que tratamento inundado. Os dados da atividade enzimática pela hidrólise do diacetato de fluoresceína (FDA) corroboraram a maior liberação de CO2 nos tratamentos com maior umidade do solo. Diferentemente dos resultados encontrados, as principais metodologias para avaliação da atividade microbiana ainda recomendam manter o solo com umidade próxima a 60% da CC. No entanto, em solos de várzea com históricos de cultivos de arroz, a manutenção de umidade próxima a 60% da CC pode limitar a atividade microbiana. A técnica de respiração do solo pode ser usada para avaliar a atividade microbiana em condições de solo inundado. No entanto, mais estudos devem ser realizados para entender o efeito do histórico de cultivo na comunidade microbiana nesses ambientes.

ABSTRACT: The lowland soils are characterized by high susceptibility to water saturation. This anaerobic condition is usually reported in paddy fields and alters the decomposition process of soil organic compounds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the soil microbial and enzymatic activity of a lowland soil at different soil moisture contents. A poorly drained Albaqualf cultivated with irrigated rice was used to evaluate microbial and enzymatic activity in treatments with different levels of soil moisture, being: i) 60% of field capacity (FC) (60%FC); ii) 100% of FC (100%FC); iii) flooded soil with a 2 cm water layer above soil surface, and iv) soil kept at 60%FC with late flood after 29 days the incubation. The greater soil microbial activity was observed in the 100%FC treatment, being 41% greater than 60%FC treatment and only 2% higher than flooded treatment. The enzymatic activity data by fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolysis corroborated the higher CO2 release in treatments with higher soil moisture content. Differently from the results reported, the main methodologies to evaluate microbial activity still recommend maintenance of the soil with a moisture content close to 60% of the FC. However, in lowland soil with history of frequent paddy fields, the maintenance of moisture close to 60% of the FC can limit the microbial activity. The soil respiration technique can be used to evaluate the microbial activity in flooded soil conditions. However, further studies should be conducted to understand the effect of the cultivation history on the microbial community of these environments.

Resumo: Para proporcionar maior seletividade do herbicida clomazone à cultura do arroz, pode-se utilizar o protetor dietholate em conjunto com outros tratamentos de sementes (ST), o que possibilita o uso de doses maiores do herbicida. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a interação entre o tratamento de sementes que utilizam fungicidas e inseticidas e o protetor dietholate em arroz irrigado. Foram realizados três experimentos, sendo que o primeiro foi conduzido em laboratório, em delineamento experimental inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições. Neste caso, testou-se diferentes ST e intervalo em dias entre o tratamento de sementes e a semeadura. O segundo e o terceiro experimentos foram realizados em campo, seguindo um delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. No experimento dois, foram testados diferentes fungicidas nos ST com ou sem a adição de dietholate; enquanto no experimento três avaliou-se o efeito dos ST com fungicidas e dietholate, quando aplicados juntamente com clomazone. Os resultados evidenciaram que a associação carboxin + thiram + dietholate reduziu a germinação, o vigor de sementes e a matéria seca da parte aérea de plantas de arroz irrigado. O aumento no tempo entre o ST e a semeadura reduziu a germinação de arroz. A associação de fungicidas em combinação com dietholate no ST pode ter ação antagônica e interferir no estabelecimento da cultura.

Abstract: The plant safener dietholate can be used for seed treatments (ST) to improve the selectivity of clomazone in rice cultures, thus allowing the application of higher dosages of this herbicide. The objective of this research was to evaluate the interaction between seed fungicide-insecticide treatments with and the plant safener dietholate in irrigated rice. Three experiments were carried out, and the first of them was conducted in a laboratory, following a completely randomized experimental design with four replications. Different ST and treatment-to-sowing intervals were evaluated. The second and third experiments were performed in field conditions, in a completely randomized block design with four replications. In experiment two, seeds were treated with different fungicides, in association or not with dietholate; while in experiment three, the effect of the ST with fungicides and dietholate with clomazone application were assessed. The results evidenced that the association between carboxin + thiram + dietholate reduced seed germination, vigor, and the dry mass of shoot of rice plants. The longer it takes between ST and sowing, the more rice seed germination is negatively affected. The association between fungicides and dietholate may have been antagonistic, and thus interfered with the culture growth potential.

RESUMO: Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a fitossociologia de plantas daninhas em arroz irrigado em diferentes sistemas de manejo do solo e intensidade de rotação de culturas. Para tanto, foram conduzidos dois estudos de campo. O primeiro estudo foi realizado em área cultivada desde 1994 com três sistemas de cultivo: plantio direto, pré-germinado e sistema convencional. O segundo estudo foi realizado em área experimental sob cinco Sistemas Integrados de Produção Agropecuária, com rotação de culturas. As avaliações fitossociológicas foram realizadas quando o arroz estava em pleno florescimento no primeiro estudo, e no final do enchimento de grãos no segundo. O sistema pré-germinado de cultivo de arroz apresenta predominância de plantas daninhas aquáticas. O sistema de cultivo convencional, quando comparado ao plantio direto, possui menores densidades de plantas daninhas. Nos Sistemas Integrados de Produção Agropecuária com maior intensidade de rotação de culturas houve maior infestação de plantas daninhas perenes.

ABSTRACT: This research aimed to evaluate the phytosociology of weeds in irrigated rice in different soil management systems and crop rotation intensity. Therefore, two field studies were carried out. Study 1 was conducted in an area that has been cultivated since 1994 with three cultivation systems: direct, pre-germinated and conventional ones. Study 2 was carried out in an experimental area in five Integrated Farming Systems, with crop rotation. Phytosociological evaluations were conducted when rice was fully blooming, in the first study, and when grain filling was ending, in the second study. Pre-germinated system of rice cultivation has predominance of aquatic weeds. Conventional system when compared with direct sowing has lower weed densities. Integrated Agricultural Production Systems with higher intensity of crop rotation have been higher infested of perennial species.

ABSTRACT There is a complex interaction between various components of the soil ecosystem, including microbial biomass and soil chemical contaminants such as heavy metals and radionuclides, which may greatly affect the efficiency of bioremediation techniques. The aim of this study was to investigate microbial capacity to change pH, changes in the metal soluble-exchangeable fraction, and effects of initial heavy metal contents on soil samples in microbial solubilization/immobilization capacity. The soil samples used in this study were collected at a known metal-contaminated site. Three highly metal-resistant bacteria were isolated from rhizosphere soil samples collected on weed species identified as Senecio brasiliensis, Senecio leptolobus, and Baccharis trimera. A completely randomized experimental design in a factorial arrangement was used, with three replicates. In general, with an acid pH, the isolates neutralized the contaminated growth media. In a neutral or basic initial pH, increases in pH were observed in the media, so these bacteria have an alkalizing effect on the growth media. Soluble metal contents were quite different and depend on the microbial species and heavy metal contents in the soil samples. The soluble-exchangeable fraction of metal such as Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd, Pb, and Ba may be unavailable after inoculation with heavy metalresistant rhizobacteria. A promising approach seems to be the application of inoculants with metal-resistant bacteria in bioremediation of multi-metal-polluted environments to improve the efficiency of this environmentally friendly technology.

ABSTRACT The DayCent ecosystem model, widely tested in upland agroecosystems, was recently updated to simulate waterlogged soils. We evaluated the new version in a paddy rice experiment in Southern Brazil. DayCent was used to simulate rice yield, soil organic carbon (SOC), and soil CH4 fluxes. Model calibration was conducted with a multiple-year dataset from the conventional tillage treatment, followed by a validation phase with data from the no-tillage treatment. Model performance was assessed with statistics commonly used in modeling studies: root mean square error (RMSE), model efficiency (EF), and mean difference (M). In general, DayCent slightly underestimated rice yields under no-tillage (by 0.07 Mg ha-1, or 9.2 %) and slightly overestimated soil C stocks, especially in the first years of the experiment. A comparison of observed and simulated CH4 daily fluxes showed that DayCent could simulate the general patterns of soil CH4 fluxes with slight discrepancies. Daily soil CH4 fluxes were overestimated by 0.43 kg ha-1 day-1 (12 %). Growth-season CH4 emissions under no-tillage were also somewhat overestimated (11 % or 45.29 kg ha-1). We conclude that DayCent simulated SOC, rice yield, and CH4 with some inaccuracies, but the overall performance was considered adequate. However, the model failed to represent the observed potential of no-tillage to mitigate CH4 emissions, possibly because model algorithms could not capture the actual field conditions derived from no-tillage management, such as soil redox potential, plant senescence, and surface placement of plant residue.

A utilização de efluentes industriais tratados na irrigação do arroz por alagamento pode provocar alterações eletroquímicas e aumentar o teor de nutrientes na solução do solo. Para testar essa hipótese, este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a dinâmica dos atributos químicos e eletroquímicos da solução do solo sob cultivo de arroz irrigado com lixiviado industrial tratado, contendo 820 mg L-1 de Na. O experimento foi conduzido em casa de vegetação, utilizando-se como unidades experimentais vasos preenchidos com 20 kg de solo, em delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados, com três repetições. Os tratamentos foram: controle (irrigação com água destilada) e quatro proporções do lixiviado (25, 50, 75 e 100 %). As coletas de solução do solo foram feitas semanalmente a partir do quarto dia após o início do alagamento (DAA) até 84 DAA. A solução do solo foi amostrada na profundidade de 10 cm e analisada para os principais nutrientes e o Na, bem como para a demanda bioquímica de oxigênio (DBO5), relação de adsorção de sódio (RAS), condutividade elétrica (CE) e potencial redox (EH). A irrigação com o lixiviado aumentou os teores de K, Ca, Mg, S, P, N-NH+4, N-NO−3 e Na, assim como os valores de RAS e CE, para valores considerados prejudiciais para as plantas. Foi observada diminuição do potencial redox na solução do solo pela irrigação com lixiviado industrial tratado. Os teores de DBO5 e o N-NH+4 diminuíram com o tempo de alagamento. Em proporções menores que 25 %, o lixiviado industrial tratado pode aumentar os teores de nutrientes em solução sem causar interferência do Na para as plantas.

The use of treated industrial wastewater in flood irrigation of rice may cause electrochemical changes and increase the nutrient content in the soil solution. To test this hypothesis, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the dynamics of the chemical and electrochemical properties of the soil solution under flooded rice irrigated with treated industrial leachate containing 820 mg L-1 of Na. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, using pots filled with 20 kg of soil in a randomized block design with three replications. The treatments were control (irrigation with distilled water) and four ratios of the leachate (25, 50, 75, and 100 %). Samples of soil solution were taken weekly from the fourth day after the start of flooding (DAF) until 84 DAF, The soil solution was sampled by means of 50 mm diameter PVC collectors at 10 cm depth, and analyzed for key nutrients and Na, as well as for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), electrical conductivity (EC), and redox potential (EH). Irrigation with leachate increased the levels of Ca, Mg, S, P, NH+4 -N, NO−3-N and Na, as well as the values of the SAR and the value of EC, to levels considered harmful to plants. A decrease in EH was observed in the soil solution through irrigation with treated industrial leachate. The levels of BOD5 and NH+4 -N decreased with time of flooding. At proportions of less than 25 %, the treated industrial leachate can increase the levels of nutrients in the soil solution without Na reaching critical levels for plants.
