Abstract Background: To identify readers who are struggling or at risk of reading difficulties, reference standards in oral reading fluency (ORF) are used to conduct an assessment that is based on a widely reported method known as curriculum-based measurement (CBM), which itself is based on 1-min fluency measures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate students’ ORF (with a 1-min fluency measure) to characterize their fluency and to determine references of appropriate development in reading at the 50th percentile. Method: For this study, a database of readings made available by the Learning Studies Research Laboratory was used. This database consisted of 365 readings by elementary-school students from the third to fifth grades in two cities in the interior of the state of São Paulo from two different public school systems that use the same teaching methodology. The data consisted of digital audio recordings of the passage “The Umbrella” (text suitable for schooling levels) of the Protocol for Assessment of Reading Comprehension procedure. For this procedure, three steps were performed: step 1—listening to the 365 readings and assessing the scores for the number of words read correctly per minute; step 2—the calculation of the mean and percentiles for each grade; and step 3—the adaptation of the reference table to indicate students eligible to receive reading fluency intervention. Results: Third-year students who correctly read 86 or more words per minute, fourth-year students who correctly read 104 or more words per minute, and fifth-year students who correctly read 117 or more words per minute were considered students who had made adequate progress in reading. Conclusion: It was possible to classify students based on the 1-min fluency measures, with reference intervals of words read correctly per minute per school year (for the third, fourth, and fifth years) for those who were making adequate progress in reading and reference intervals for those who were considered readers who were struggling or at risk of reading difficulties.

RESUMO Objetivo Analisar e comparar os parâmetros da fluência na fala espontânea e leitura a compreensão de leitura de escolares que gaguejam com fluentes. Método Estudo transversal e prospectivo aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética da Instituição. Amostra composta por 30 escolares com idade entre 8 e 11 anos e 11 meses divididos em dois grupos: Grupo Pesquisa com 15 escolares com gagueira, Grupo Controle com 15 escolares fluentes. Os participantes foram submetidos à avaliação da fluência da fala espontânea, leitura dos textos expositivo e narrativo, e avaliação da compreensão de leitura. A análise estatística inferencial foi realizada por meio dos testes de Mann-Whitney e para análise de correlação foi utilizado o teste de Coeficiente de Spearman. Resultados A comparação entre os parâmetros da fluência indicou que escolares com gagueira manifestaram maior quantidade de disfluências típicas da gagueira, enquanto os fluentes mostraram maiores fluxos de sílabas e de palavras por minuto, na fala espontânea e na leitura. Em relação à compreensão de leitura, escolares com gagueira apresentaram desempenho inferior ao fluentes, em ambos os textos. Não houve associação entre a frequência de disfluências e compreensão de leitura, nos escolares com e sem gagueira. Conclusão Escolares com gagueira apresentaram prejuízos quanto à compreensão de leitura quando comparados à fluentes, porém não houve associação entre a frequência de disfluências com a compreensão de leitura em ambos os grupos. Sugere-se que a compreensão da leitura seja avaliada e se necessário trabalhada a fim de reduzir as consequências da gagueira e favorecer aprendizagem deste escolar.

ABSTRACT Purpose To analyze and to compare fluency parameters in spontaneous speech and reading and reading comprehension of school-age children who stutter and who do not stutter. Methods Cross-sectional and prospective study approved by the Research Ethics Committee. Sample consisted of 30 scholars aged 8 and 11 years and 11 months divided into two groups: Study Group with 15 school-age children who stutter, Control Group with 15 school-age children who do not stutter. Participants underwent fluency evaluation of spontaneous speech, reading of expository and narrative texts, and reading comprehension evaluation. Inferential statistical analysis was conducted using the Mann-Whitney tests and correlation analysis was conducted using the Spearman's Coefficient test. Results The comparison between the fluency parameters indicated that school-age children who stutter showed a greater amount of stuttering-like disfluencies, while school-age children who do not stutter showed longer flows of syllables and words per minute, in spontaneous speech and reading. Regarding reading comprehension, school-age children who stutter had lower performance than school-age children who do not stutter in both texts. There was no association between the frequency of disfluencies and reading comprehension in school-age children who stutter and who do not stutter. Conclusion School-age children who stutter showed impairments in reading comprehension when compared to fluent, since there was no association between the frequencies of disfluencies with reading comprehension for both groups. It is suggested that reading comprehension be evaluated and, if necessary, improved in order to reduce the consequences of stuttering and provide learning of this school-age children.

RESUMO Objetivo Apresentar o processo de elaboração de um banco de palavras adequadas ao nível de proficiência de leitura de escolares do Ensino Fundamental I. Método Selecionaram-se palavras de livros didáticos de Língua Portuguesa da rede pública de ensino de São Paulo, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro e Minas Gerais. Optou-se pelos substantivos e adjetivos. Excluíram-se as palavras homófonas, escritas em outros idiomas, com grafia errada, compostas por justaposição, abreviações, advérbios, locuções adverbiais, locuções prepositivas, meses do ano, numerais, palavras no aumentativo ou diminutivo, nomes próprios e gírias. As palavras foram categorizadas segundo frequência de ocorrência nos livros. Para tanto, foram utilizados os tercis da distribuição, a frequência média e o ponto de corte dos tercis. Para detectar possíveis falhas na seleção das palavras, foram selecionados 50 escolares do 1º ao 5º ano (10 por ano escolar) para leitura individual, com duração de 20 minutos, do banco de palavras. Resultados Foram digitadas 286.290 palavras. Após análise dos critérios de inclusão/exclusão e categorização por frequência de ocorrência, o banco ficou constituído por 4.195 palavras. Após leitura pelos escolares, foram excluídas palavras que contemplavam os critérios de exclusão e que geravam desconforto por parte dos alunos. O banco ficou constituído por 4190 palavras, divididas em frequência: baixa (n= 3735, 88,59%), média (n= 374, 8,93%) e alta (n= 81, 1,93%), denominado E-LEITURA I. Conclusão a elaboração de um banco de palavras de baixa, média e alta frequência de ocorrência para servir de estímulo linguístico foi adequadamente alcançado e disponibilizado para a prática clínica e pedagógica.

ABSTRACT Purpose To present the process of elaborating a words database appropriate for the reading proficiency level of elementary school students. Methods Words from Portuguese language textbooks used in the public school system of São Paulo, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais states of Brazil were selected. We opted for those belonging to the class of nouns and adjectives. Were excluded: homophones; other languages; abbreviations; adverbs; adverbial phrases; prepositional phrases; months of the year; numerals; diminutive or augmentative forms; proper names; misspellings; slang; and words composed by juxtaposition. The words were then categorized according to frequency of occurrence in the textbooks. For this purpose, the tertiles of the distribution, the mean frequency and cutoff point of the tertiles were used. To detect possible mistakes in the words selection, 50 students from the 1st to 5th year, 10 per school year, were selected for individual reading from the database for 20 minutes. Results A total of 286,290 words were typed. After analyzing the inclusion/exclusion criteria and categorizing by frequency of occurrence, the database amounted to 4,195 words. Following the students reading, the E-READING I comprised 4,190 words classified according to frequency: low (n = 3735), medium (n = 374) and high (n = 81). Conclusion The development of a low, medium and high frequency words database, to serve as a linguistic stimulus, was achieved and made available for clinical and pedagogical practice.

RESUMO Objetivo: Elaborar um programa de remediação com a nomeação rápida e leitura, bem como verificar a significância clínica da aplicação do programa elaborado em escolares com dislexia. Método: Participaram cinco sujeitos do terceiro ao quinto ano do ensino fundamental, com idade de 8 a 11 anos, de ambos os sexos, com diagnóstico interdisciplinar de dislexia. Todos os escolares foram submetidos na pré e pós-testagem à aplicação das provas de habilidades metalinguísticas e de leitura, compreensão de leitura e da prova de nomeação automática rápida. Resultados: A análise foi realizada pelo Método JT, que permitiu verificar se houve mudança positiva ou negativa e significância clínica na pós-testagem. Os resultados mostraram ter havido significância clínica nas provas de identificação; adição e combinação de sílaba, de fonema final e medial, além de repetição de não palavras, leitura de palavras reais e pseudopalavras, compreensão leitora, além de nomeação automática rápida quando comparada a pré com a pós-testagem. Conclusão: O programa elaborado mostrou-se eficaz e com aplicabilidade, podendo ser utilizado instrumento de intervenção baseada em evidência científica para escolares com dislexia, pois ocorreu significância clínica para o desempenho em leitura.

ABSTRACT Purpose: Elaborate a remediation program with rapid automatized naming and reading, as well as to verify the clinical significance of the elaborated program for students with dyslexia. Method: The study involved five students from 3rd to the 5th grade of elementary school, aged 8 to 12 years, of both genders, with an interdisciplinary diagnosis of dyslexia. All students were submitted to pre- and post-test application of metalinguistic skills and reading test, reading comprehension and rapid automatized naming test. Results: The analysis was performed using the JT method that allowed to verify positive or negative change and clinical significance in the post-testing. The results showed clinical significance in the tests of identification, syllable addition and combination, final and medial phoneme; in addition to nonwords repetition, real words and pseudowords reading, reading comprehension and rapid automatized naming test when comparing the pre- and post-testing. Conclusion: The elaborated program was efficient and applicable as an intervention instrument based on scientific evidence for students with dyslexia since it showed clinical significance for reading performance.

RESUMO Objetivo traduzir e adaptar culturalmente, para o Brasil, a bateria “Evaluación de los procesos lectores - PROLEC-SE-R”, destinada aos escolares do Ensino Fundamental II e do Médio. Método foram seguidos os seguintes estágios da Tradução e adaptação cultural: (1) Tradução; (2) Síntese das traduções; (3) Retrotradução; (4) Revisão por comitê de especialistas; (5) Estudo-Piloto, em que foram avaliados 70 escolares, sendo 10 para cada ano escolar, em duas sessões; e (6) Avaliação e apreciação de todos os relatórios escritos pelo pesquisador e comitê de especialistas. Resultados o estudo-piloto não indicou necessidade de modificação nas provas do PROLEC-SE-R, tanto na versão coletiva quanto na versão individual. Os escolares apresentaram boa aceitação ao procedimento e não houve queixas ou relatos de dificuldade quanto à compreensão das provas e instruções. Conclusão o procedimento está adaptado para a realidade brasileira, no entanto, ainda é necessário estudo de validação da população.

ABSTRACT Purpose to translate and culturally adapt, for Brazil, the battery of tests “Evaluación de los procesos lectores - PROLEC-SE-R”, for students of Elementary School cycle II, and Senior High School. Methods The following stages of translation and cultural adaptation were followed: (1) Translation; (2) Synthesis of translations; (3) Back-translation; (4) Evaluation by specialist committee; (5) Pilot study: Undertaken in a sample of 70 students, 10 from each school year, in two sessions; and (6) Evaluation and appreciation of all the reports written by the researcher and specialist committee. Results modifications to the tests of PROLEC-SE-R are not necessary as indicated in the pilot study, both in the collective and individual version. The procedure received good acceptance by the evaluated students and there were no complaints or reports of difficulty in understanding the tests and instructions. Conclusion the procedure is appropriate for the Brazilian reality and can be used to evaluate Elementary School II and Senior High School students. A standardization study is necessary in a representative sample of the population.

ABSTRACT Purpose Relate oral reading fluency performance to reading comprehension in students of the Elementary School. Methods The study included 97 students, distributed in three groups: Group I (GI): composed by 32 students from 3rd grade level; Group II (GII): composed by 28 students from 4th grade level and Group III (GIII): composed by 37 students from 5th grade level. The oral reading of a text was recorded and analyzed observing the pauses made by the students, auditory perceived by judges, speed reading measured by the number of words correctly read and reading comprehension assessment. Results Students of Group I and III presented relation between reading comprehension and number of words correctly read per minute, which did not occur with the students from Group II. The GII and GIII showed negative relation, not significant between the number of pauses and reading comprehension. Conclusion The data showed that oral reading rate is related to the reading comprehension, however, the number of pauses showed no significant differences between reading comprehension for most grade level analyzed.

RESUMO Objetivo Relacionar o desempenho na fluência de leitura oral com a compreensão de leitura de escolares do Ensino Fundamental I. Método Participaram deste estudo 97 escolares, distribuídos em três grupos: Grupo I (GI): composto por 32 escolares do 3º ano; Grupo II (GII): composto por 28 escolares do 4º ano; e Grupo III (GIII): composto por 37 escolares do 5º ano. A leitura oral de um texto foi gravada e analisada, observando-se as pausas realizadas pelos escolares, percebidas auditivamente por juízes, medidas a velocidade de leitura, por meio do número de palavras lidas corretamente, e realizada também a avaliação da compreensão de leitura. Resultados Para os escolares do Grupo I e III, o desempenho na compreensão foi relacionado com os escores de palavras lidas corretamente por minuto, o que não ocorreu com os escolares do Grupo II. O GII e GIII apresentaram relações negativas não significantes entre o número de pausas e a compreensão. Conclusão Os dados demonstraram que a taxa de leitura oral tem relação com a compreensão de leitura, entretanto, o número de pausas não demonstrou diferenças significantes em relação à compreensão de leitura para a maior parte dos anos escolares analisados.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize and compare the handwriting performance of Brazilian students from the 3rd to the 5th grade level of elementary school I with a computerized instrument that allowed the real performance to be observed during the execution of the handwriting. METHODS: Ninety-five students, aged 8 years to 11 years and 11 months, were assigned the production tasks of handwriting letters and pseudocharacters to assess the variables of latency, letter duration production and movement fluency. The stimulus presentation and the analysis of the movements were analyzed by Ductus software. RESULTS: In relation to the writing duration, latency and fluency of the alphabet letters, there was a diminution of values from the 3rd to 5th grade. For the comparison between alphabet and pseudocharacter latency, the results indicated a difference between the alphabet letter and its corresponding pseudocharacter, with greater latency for the pseudocharacter. This finding suggests that a motor sequence has not been established, so it cannot be assumed that the production of the alphabet letters was automatic. CONCLUSION: The results of this study make it possible to verify the interaction failures between the central and peripheral processes, with progression between the 3rd and 5th grade. It also highlights the influence of the lack of systematized teaching of the tracing of letters for Brazilian students since proficiency in calligraphy is critically linked to academic performance. These findings provide a great contribution to Brazilian educational psychology and reflect both educational and clinical practices.

ABSTRACT Objective: to present the history of the Brazilian Speech Therapy and Audiology Congress, exposing its organization and characterizing part of the scientific production published in its annals in the last ten years. Methods: a theoretical, descriptive-exploratory study, with a bibliographic data source. The analysis was based on data available on the website of the Brazilian Society of Speech Therapy and Audiology, and restricted to the last ten years. The findings considered the year of publication, the publication category and the study area. The statistical analysis applied the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Results: since 2006 eleven specialties have been recognized. The areas available for submitting papers changed between 2008 and 2011. From 2012 to 2017, 7,296 participants and 5,166 publications were identified. A decrease in both publications and participants is seen since 2014. In 2017, the number of papers was higher than the number of participants. Submissions in the "thesis/dissertation" category increased by 110%. Papers of a specific field related to the human voice presented the highest number of papers in the period. Conclusion: the increase in the number of specialists, added to technological advances, may partially justify a reduction in the number of participants; however, new relocations are necessary as a way to keep the event up to date and attractive, in face of the profession’s new trends.

RESUMO Objetivo: apresentar a história do Congresso Brasileiro de Fonoaudiologia, expondo sua organização e caracterizando parte da produção científica publicada em seus anais nos últimos dez anos. Métodos: trata-se de um estudo teórico, descritivo-exploratório, com fonte de dados bibliográfica. A análise foi fundamentada nos dados disponíveis no site da Sociedade Brasileira de Fonoaudiologia e restrita aos últimos dez anos. Os achados consideraram o ano, a categoria e a área de inscrição do trabalho. A análise estatística utilizou o programa Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Resultados: desde 2006 onze especialidades foram reconhecidas. As áreas disponíveis para submissão de trabalhos sofreram alterações entre 2008 e 2011. No período de 2012 a 2017 foram identificados 7296 participantes e 5166 publicações com progressiva redução em ambos desde 2014. Em 2017, a quantidade de trabalhos foi maior do que a de participantes. As submissões na categoria “tese/dissertação” registraram um aumento de 110%. A área “Voz” teve o maior número de trabalhos do período. Conclusão: o aumento no número de especialistas somado aos avanços tecnológicos podem justificar, parcialmente, a redução no número de participantes; porém, novos remanejamentos se fazem necessários como forma de manter o evento atualizado e atrativo caminhando de encontro às novas tendências da profissão.

ABSTRACT Objective: to describe and compare the results of ocular (saccadic, screening, and optokinetic) tests of vectoelectronystagmography among the groups with dyslexia, learning disorder and control. Methods: 28 male and female students aged 8 to 11 years participated in this study. They were divided into three groups: Group I, 10 students with dyslexia, Group II, 9 students with learning disorders and Group III, 9 students with no learning disorders. In this research, digital vectoelectronystagmography - ocular test - was performed. Results: saccadic movement, optokinetic nystagmus, and pendular tracking tests were found to show subtle differences among the three groups. Comparing the saccadic eye movements and the optokinetic nystagmus tests, it was observed that the movement in the left eye was slower for Group I, and even slower for Group II. It was also observed that GI and GII were slower for the pendular tracking of luminous stimulus in relation to the control group. Conclusion: in general, there are differences among the groups in the vectoelectronystagmography, which indicated slower tracking and vestibulo-ocular reflex in children with dyslexia and learning disorders.

RESUMO Objetivo: descrever e comparar os resultados das provas oculares (sacádicos, rastreio, e optocinético) da vectoeletronistagmografia entre os grupos com dislexia, transtorno de aprendizagem e controle. Métodos: participaram deste estudo 28 estudantes do sexo masculino e feminino, com idade entre 8 e 11 anos. Foram divididos em três grupos, sendo Grupo I: Dez escolares com Dislexia, Grupo II: Nove escolares com Transtornos de Aprendizagem e Grupo III: Nove escolares sem dificuldades de aprendizagem. Nesta pesquisa foi realizada avaliação da vectoeletronistagmografia digital: provas oculares (sacádicos, rastreio, e optocinético). Resultados: verificou-se que as provas de movimento sacádico, nistagmo optocinético e rastreio pendular mostraram diferenças sutis entre os três grupos. Na comparação das provas de movimentos sacádicos dos olhos e pesquisa do nistagmo optocinético foi observada que a velocidade do movimento do olho esquerdo que se mostrou mais lento para o Grupo I, e ainda mais lentos para o Grupo II. Foi observado também que os grupos GI e GII foram mais lentos para o rastreio em pêndulo do estímulo luminoso em relação ao grupo controle. Conclusão: de modo geral, foi observada diferença entre os grupos para a medida da vectoeletronistagmografia, que indicam rastreios e reflexo vestibular-ocular mais lentos nas crianças com dislexia e transtornos de aprendizagem.

ABSTRACT Objective: To develop a motor screening assessment and provide preliminary evidence of its psychometric properties. Methods: A sample of 365 elementary school students was assessed, with structural equation modeling applied to obtain evidence of the adequacy of the factor structure of the motor screening assessment. As well, differential item functioning was used to evaluate whether various identifiable subgroups of children (i.e., sex and grade) perform particular tasks differently. Results: Overall, girls obtained higher scores than boys while, for both sexes, the assessment scores increased with age. Furthermore, differential item function analysis revealed that the precision of the test was highest for those with moderate to low motor performance, suggesting that this tool would be appropriate for identifying individuals with movement difficulties. Conclusion: Although further tests of its psychometric properties are required, the motor screening assessment appears to be a reliable, valid, and quickly-administered tool for screening children's movements.

RESUMO Objetivo: Desenvolver uma avaliação de triagem motora (ATM) e fornecer evidências preliminares de suas propriedades psicométricas. Métodos: 365 alunos do ensino fundamental foram avaliados. Foi utilizado modelagem de equações estruturais para evidenciar a adequação da estrutura fatorial da ATM. A função diferencial do item foi utilizada para avaliar tarefas podem funcionar de forma diferente para subgrupos (ou seja, sexo e escolaridade). Resultados: Em geral, as meninas obtiveram pontuações mais altas do que os meninos e, em ambos os sexos, os escores da avaliação aumentaram com a idade. A análise da função diferencial do item revelou que a precisão do teste foi maior para aqueles com desempenho motor baixo a moderado, sugerindo que essa ferramenta seria apropriada para identificar aqueles com dificuldades motoras. Conclusão: Embora sejam necessários novos testes de suas propriedades psicométricas, a ATM parece ser uma ferramenta confiável, válida e rápida de administrar como rastreio motor para crianças.

ABSTRACT Purpose Perform a cross-cultural adaptation of the Detailed Assessment of Speed of Handwriting 17+ (DASH 17+) for Brazilians. Methods Evaluation of (1) conceptual, item and (2) semantic equivalence, with assistance of four translators and application of a pilot study to 36 students. Results (1) The concepts and items are equivalent in the British and Brazilian cultures. (2) Adaptations were made concerning the English language pangram used in copying tasks and selection of the lower-case, cursive handwriting in the alphabet-writing task. Application of the pilot study verified acceptability and understanding of the proposed tasks by the students. Conclusion The Brazilian Portuguese version of the DASH 17+ was presented after finalization of the conceptual, item and semantic equivalence of the instrument. Further studies on psychometric properties should be conducted with the purpose of measuring the speed of handwriting in youngsters and adults with greater reliability and validity to the procedure.

RESUMO Objetivo Realizar a adaptação transcultural do Detailed Assessment of Speed of Handwriting 17+ (DASH 17+) para brasileiros. Método (1) Avaliação de equivalências conceitual e de itens e (2) Avaliação da equivalência semântica, sendo necessários quatro tradutores e aplicação do estudo piloto em 36 estudantes. Resultados (1) Os conceitos e os itens são equivalentes na cultura britânica e brasileira. (2) Foram realizadas adaptações quanto à frase classificada como pangrama na língua inglesa utilizada nas tarefas de cópia e a escolha pela letra cursiva minúscula na tarefa de escrita do alfabeto. Com a aplicação do pré-teste, constatou-se aceitabilidade e compreensão dos estudantes nas tarefas propostas. Conclusão Com a finalização da Equivalência conceitual, de itens e semântica do DASH 17+, apresentou-se a versão em português brasileiro. Como continuidade, novos estudos sobre as propriedades psicométricas devem ser realizados, a fim de mensurar a velocidade de escrita de jovens e adultos com maior confiabilidade e validade ao procedimento.

Abstract: This study aims to compare the performance of male and female dyslexic students in tests of reading words and pseudowords, and comprehension of sentences and texts. The participants were forty-eight students with dyslexia, attending 3rd grade to 5th grade of elementary school (age range 8 to 12 years old), from public and private schools, divided into: GI - 14 girls and GII - 34 boys. The researchers applied tests of Reading process assessment: reading of words, reading of pseudowords, comprehension of sentences, and comprehension of texts. The results showed evidence of difference by sex in reading of low frequency words and sentence comprehension. It was concluded that the discussion on the difference between dyslexic students by sex could be relevant in the educational context, as among the five variables, two provided information for promoting further discussion on the subject, highlighting the importance of further studies.

Resumo: Este estudo objetiva comparar o desempenho dos escolares com dislexia entre os sexos feminino e masculino em provas de leitura de palavras e pseudopalavras, de compreensão de orações e textos. Participaram 48 escolares com dislexia do 3º ao 5º ano do Ensino Fundamental (8 a 12 anos de idade) de escola pública e particular divididos em: GI - 14 meninas e GII - 34 meninos. Foram aplicadas provas de avaliação de leitura de palavras e pseudopalavras, compreensão de orações e textos, das Provas de avaliação dos processos de leitura. Os resultados indicaram evidência de diferença por sexo nas provas de leitura de palavras de baixa frequência e compreensão de orações. Concluiu-se que a discussão sobre a diferença entre os escolares com dislexia por sexo pode ser relevante no contexto educacional, pois dentre as cinco variáveis estudadas, duas forneceram informações para levantar maior discussão sobre o tema, destacando a importância de mais estudos.

Resumen: Este estudio tuvo por objetivo comparar el desempeño de los estudiantes con dislexia entre los sexos femenino y masculino en las pruebas de lectura y comprensión lectora. Participaron 48 estudiantes con dislexia del 3º al 5º grado de la Enseñanza Fundamental (8 a 12 años de edad) de escuelas pública y privada, divididos en: GI - 14 niñas y GII - 34 niños. Fueron aplicadas pruebas de evaluación de lectura de palabras y pseudopalavras, comprensión de oraciones y textos, de las Pruebas de Evaluación de los procesos lectores. Los resultados indican evidencia de diferencia por sexo en las pruebas de lectura de palabras de baja frecuencia y comprensión de oraciones. Se concluyó que la discusión acerca de la diferencia entre los estudiantes con dislexia por sexo puede ser relevante en el contexto educativo, pues de las cinco variables estudiadas, dos proporcionan informaciones para alzar discusiones adicionales sobre el tema, destacando la importancia de mayores estudios.

Abstract To characterize and compare the spelling performance of private and public students. Three hundred 1st-5th graders from public and private schools in the city of Marília, São Paulo, Brazil, were evaluated, totalizing 30 students from each grade, respectively. Collective and individual versions of the Pró-Ortografia test (a renowned Brazilian spelling test) were administered. There were significant inter-group differences indicating that private school students achieved higher performance. The mean values of correct answers of higher grade level students were statistically greater than those of the lower grade level students. The results indicated that the mean values of correct answers of all versions of the spelling test administered increased across grades for both private and public school students. However, the data evaluated showed that private school students attained higher spelling performance than public school students from the 2nd grade onwards.

Resumo O estudo buscou caracterizar e relacionar o desempenho ortográfico dos escolares de 1º ao 5º ano do ensino particular e público. Foram avaliados 300 escolares do 1º ao 5º ano em duas escolas, uma particular e outra pública, da cidade de Marília, São Paulo, sendo 30 alunos de cada ano escolar. Como procedimento, foi aplicado o Pró-Ortografia na sua versão coletiva e individual. Houve diferença estatisticamente significativa na comparação intergrupos, indicando desempenho superior dos escolares do ensino particular. Com o aumento da seriação, todos os grupos aumentaram a média de acertos nas provas avaliadas. Os resultados indicaram que as médias de acertos nas provas ortográficas se tornaram superiores com a progressão escolar tanto para os escolares do ensino particular quanto para os do ensino público. No entanto, os dados evidenciaram que os alunos do ensino particular apresentaram desempenho ortográfico superior em relação aos do ensino público a partir do 2º ano.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to compare the opinion of parents and teachers of students with learning disorders, regarding executive function skills. Methods: a cross-sectional cohort study, involving 39 students, boys and girls, with a multi-disciplinary diagnosis of learning disorders. Participants in the age range 8 to 11 years and 11 months were enrolled in Grades 3 to 5 of Primary Education I. The Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF) questionnaire, comprising one questionnaire for the parents and another for the teachers, was applied. The aim was to characterize the behavioral aspects of executive function in the school and home environments. Results: data were statistically analyzed using non-parametric tests and significant differences in the answers provided by parents and teachers in the organization scale were found. By comparing the answers given by parents and teachers, significant differences were seen in the emotional control, planning/organization, material organization and monitoring scales. Conclusion: based on the results of this study, one concludes that there are different perceptions of impaired executive function among parents and teachers of students presented with learning disorders. Parental answers pointed to more difficulties than those provided by the teachers.

RESUMO Objetivo: comparar a opinião de pais e de professores de escolares com transtornos de aprendizagem em habilidades de função executiva. Métodos: estudo de coorte transversal. Participaram deste estudo 39 escolares com diagnóstico interdisciplinar de transtornos de aprendizagem, de ambos os sexos, com faixa etária entre 8 anos e 11 anos e 11 meses, do 3º ao 5º ano do Ensino Público Fundamental I. Como procedimento foi utilizado o Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF), composto de dois questionários, sendo um para o preenchimento pelos pais e um para professores, visando à caracterização de aspectos comportamentais da função executiva em ambientes escolar e em casa. Resultados: os resultados foram analisados estatisticamente utilizando testes não paramétricos. Foi possível observar diferença significativa entre as respostas preenchidas pelos pais dos escolares em relação à escala de organização. Na comparação entre os questionários preenchidos pelos pais e pelos professores houve diferença significativa para as escalas de controle emocional, planejamento/organização, organização de materiais e monitoramento. Conclusão: houve diferentes percepções do comprometimento das funções executivas para os pais e para os professores dos escolares com transtornos de aprendizagem. As dificuldades foram indicadas predominantemente pelos pais comparativamente aos professores.

Abstract The objective of this study was to develop two intervention programs to promote reading comprehension, one for narrative texts and one for expository texts, to be used by 3rd-5th grade elementary school teachers in the classroom. The applicability of the programs was verified. A total of 143 elementary school students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades participated in this study. The students were evaluated before and after the administration of the intervention programs. There were significant differences in the answers of inferential questions about the macrostructure of the narrative texts in the three groups of students evaluated. A significant difference was also observed in the expository texts for the group of 5th graders, indicating superior performance of the students submitted to the programs. The strategies of the informative programs were more effective in improving students’ reading performance on the narrative texts than on the expository texts. Therefore, the strategies used should be reviewed in future studies.

Resumo O estudo teve como objetivo elaborar dois programas de intervenção para a compreensão de leitura, sendo um para textos narrativos e outro para textos expositivos, para aplicação em sala de aula pelos professores do 3º ao 5º ano do Ensino Fundamental I. A investigação buscou também verificar a aplicabilidade dos programas junto aos alunos. Participaram da pesquisa 143 escolares de três turmas do Ensino Fundamental I (3o, 4o e 5o anos). Os escolares foram avaliados pré e pós-aplicação dos programas. Houve diferenças significantes nas respostas das perguntas inferenciais de macroestrutura sobre os textos narrativos nos três grupos estudados e, para o grupo do 5º ano, nos textos expositivos, com desempenho superior dos escolares submetidos aos programas. As estratégias dos programas informativos se mostraram mais eficazes quando utilizadas para a leitura dos textos narrativos em comparação à leitura de textos expositivos, o que aponta a necessidade de revisão das estratégias utilizadas, em estudos futuros.
