Abstract BRS Rendeira and BRS Progresso are cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) cultivars with tolerance to post-harvest deterioration and high mean yields of fresh root (31.1 and 27.9 t ha-1) and starch (8.9 and 8.1 t ha-1) in annual production cycles. Both new varieties are recommended for the flour and starch industry.

Resumo Conhecimento preciso e exato da percolação é uma chave para a determinação confiável do balanço de água no solo e da eficiência no uso da água pelas culturas. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar uma aproximação para estimar a quantidade de água percolada na zona radicular usando dados de umidade do solo (SWC) medidos em diferentes intervalos de tempo. A aproximação se baseou na diferença de umidade do solo dentro e abaixo da camada efetiva do sistema radicular de bananeiras em diferentes intervalos de tempo. Um lisímetro de drenagem foi utilizado para comparar os dados de percolação medida e estimada. A aproximação foi então utilizada em um bananal sob irrigação por gotejamento e por micro aspersão, com e sem cobertura do solo. O armazenamento de água no solo na zona radicular efetiva da bananeira foi avaliado em um perfil bidimensional do solo com sensores de reflectometria no domínio do tempo (TDR). A percolação média medida em lisímetro não diferiu do valor estimado pela aproximação, utilizando intervalos entre medidas de umidade do solo iguais ou superiores a 6 horas a partir do final do evento de irrigação. Estimativas de percolação sob gotejamento e micro aspersão em campo, com e sem cobertura do solo, foram consistentes com aquelas dos lisímetro, considerando o intervalo de 6 horas entre medições de umidade do solo. A percolação foi maior sob gotejamento com cobertura do solo. A quantidade de água percolada não foi influenciada pela presença da cobertura do solo sob irrigação por micro aspersão.

Abstract Precise, accurate knowledge of percolation is key to reliable determination of soil water balance and a crop’s water-use efficiency. This work evaluated an approach to estimate the amount of water percolated in the root zone using soil water content (SWC) data measured at different time intervals. The approach was based on the difference of soil water content within and below the effective root zone of banana plants at different time intervals. A drainage lysimeter was used to compare the measured and estimated percolation data. The approach was then used in a banana orchard under drip and micro sprinkler irrigation, with and without the use of mulch. The soil water storage in the banana’s root zone was evaluated within a two-dimensional soil profile with time domain reflectometry (TDR). Mean percolation measured in the lysimeters did not differ from the approach’s estimates using intervals between SWC readings equal to or longer than 6 h from the end of an irrigation event. Percolation estimates under drip and micro sprinkler irrigation in the field, with and without mulch, were consistent with those measured in the lysimeters, considering the 6-h interval of SWC measurements. Percolation was greater under the drip irrigation system with mulch. The amount of water percolated was not influenced by the presence of mulch under the micro sprinkler system.

El objetivo de ésta investigación fue analizar la viabilidad económica del cultivo del melón Pele de Sapo regado con agua de baja y alta concentración salina, aplicado en forma alternada, por ciclo de desarrollo del cultivo o mixto. El trabajo constó de dos experimentos llevados a cabo entre noviembre de 2008 a noviembre de 2009, en el predio de Pedra Preta, ubicado en Mossoró, RN, Brasil. En el experimento I, el melón (Cucumis melo L., cv Sancho) se regó con agua de baja salinidad (CEa = 0,5 dS m-1) y alta salinidad (CEa = 4,3 dS m-1), aplicado diariamente en forma alternada, variando por cada fase fenológica del cultivo o sin cualquier alteración, haciendo un total de 10 tratamientos; en el experimento II algunos tratamientos del primer ensayo fueron repetidos y evaluados, sumando otro tratamiento, equivalente a una mezcla de dos tipos de agua, utilizando las variedades de melón Sancho y Medellín. El manejo con agua salina en el riego del melón fue económicamente viable, principalmente en el tratamiento en que se regó cada dos días con agua de baja salinidad y cada día con agua salina, proporcionando un ahorro de cerca del 33% de agua de baja salinidad, proporcionando una margen de lucro de 72%.

The objective of this research was to study the economical viability of the melon crop irrigated with water of the low and high salt concentration, applied alternately, by stage of development of crop or mixed. The study consisted of two experiments, conducted between November 2008 and November 2009 at the Pedra Preta Farm in Mossoró, RN, Brazil. In experiment I, the melon (Cucumis melo L., cv Sancho) was irrigated with water of low (ECw = 0.5 dS m-1) and high salinity (ECw = 4.3 dS m-1) applied daily alternately, varying by crop growth stage or without amendment, totaling 10 treatments. In the second experiment, we repeated same treatments of the first trial, plus other treatment that corresponded to a mixture of both types of water, using the cultivars Sancho and Medellin. Different forms of management of saline water irrigation of muskmelon was economically feasible, especially the treatment in which the crop was irrigated two days with water of low salinity and one day with saline water, providing a saving of about 33% water of low salinity, providing a profit margin of 72%.
