Resumo O gênero Aplectana inclui espécies de helmintos gastrointestinais comumente encontrados parasitando anfíbios e répteis, mundialmente. No entanto, a maioria das espécies do gênero foi descrita com base apenas em caracteres morfológicos. Durante expedições helmintológicas, foram encontrados nematódeos identificados como A. pella parasitando o anuro hilídeo Osteocephalus cabrerai na mesma localidade da descrição original. Foi fornecida a primeira sequência de nucleotídeos do gene ribossomal 18S rDNA de Aplectana pella e se estabeleceu a posição filogenética da espécie em relação aos representantes de Cosmocercidae. Comparações genéticas entre A. pella e seus congêneres revelaram uma baixa divergência genética. Foi encontrado que as sequências estudadas agrupam com espécies de Cosmocerca, reforçando a hipótese que representantes do gênero Aplectana não formam um grupo monofilético.

Abstract Aplectana comprises species of gastrointestinal helminths commonly found parasitizing amphibians and reptiles worldwide. However, most species of the genus are described based only on morphological traits. During helminthological surveys, we found nematodes identified as Aplectana pella parasitizing the hylid frog Osteocephalus cabrerai from the same locality as the original description. We provided the first nucleotide sequence of ribosomal gene 18S rDNA for Aplectana pella and established the species' phylogenetic position between representatives of Cosmocercidae. A pairwise genetic comparison between A. pella and its congeners revealed a low genetic divergence. We found that our sequences clustered with species of Cosmocerca, reinforcing the hypothesis that representatives of the genus Aplectana do not form a monophyletic group.

Resumen Objetivo: Ante la escasez de investigaciones que traten de manera conjunta el conocimiento, la calidad y la higiene del sueño en el adolescente, el objetivo del presente estudio es analizar las diferencias y las relaciones que existen entre estas variables en función de características sociodemográficas y personales. Método: A través de los instrumentos Sleep Beliefs Scale (SBS), Spanish Adolescents and Young Adults Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (AYA-PSQI-S) y Adolescents Sleep Hygiene Scale Revied (ASHSr), se midieron las características del sueño de 140 estudiantes (M = 16,75; DE = 0,75). Resultados: El 89,3% de los adolescentes presentaban problemas de sueño, subyacentes de la mejorable higiene del sueño por parte del 62,2% y de un escaso conocimiento general del sueño. El sexo femenino y el alumnado en cursos superiores presentaron mayores problemas para conciliar el sueño, somnolencia y una baja gestión cognitiva-emocional (p < 0,05). La higiene del sueño (β = - 0,344), la edad (β = 0,154) y el autoconcepto (β = -0,349) son los factores que predijeron significativamente (p < 0,05) la calidad del sueño del adolescente. Conclusiones: La adquisición de una adecuada higiene del sueño se vuelve fundamental para mejorar la calidad del descanso y la funcionalidad diurna en adolescentes, destacando su importancia, sobre todo, en niveles académicos avanzados y en el caso específico de las mujeres.

Abstract Objective: Given the scarcity of research addressing the intersection of knowledge, sleep quality, and hygiene among adolescents, the primary objective of this study is to analyse the variations and correlations among these variables based on socio-demographic and personal characteristics. Method: The Sleep Beliefs Scale (SBS), the Spanish Adolescents and Young Adults Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (AYA-PSQI-S), the Adolescents Sleep Hygiene Scale Revied (ASHSr) were used to measure the sleep characteristics of the 140 Spanish students (M = 16,75; SD = 0,75). Results: Sleep problems were found in 89,3% of the adolescents, underlying poor sleep hygiene in 62,2% and poor general sleep knowledge (SBS = 12,04). Females and students in higher grades presented greater problems in falling asleep, sleepiness, and poor cognitive-emotional management (p < 0,05). Sleep hygiene (β = - 0,344), age (β = 0,154), and self-concept (β = -0,349) were the factors that significantly (p < 0,05) predicted adolescent sleep quality. Conclusions: The acquisition of proper sleep hygiene becomes crucial to enhance the quality of rest and daytime functionality in adolescents, emphasizing its significance, especially in advanced academic levels and specifically in the case of females.

Resumen Introducción. En la actualidad, los sistemas agropecuarios y forestales se han visto fuertemente afectados por la variabilidad de los fenómenos climáticos, entre ellos El Niño Oscilación Sur (ENOS). Debido a estas circunstancias, un manejo adecuado y eficiente de los recursos naturales como el suelo y agua resulta imperativo para garantizar una producción sostenible. Para ello, el estudio de las variables físicas del suelo, tales como el contenido del agua en el suelo y su correspondiente estado energético (potencial hídrico total) es fundamental. Objetivo. Describir las principales metodologías para la determinación del contenido de agua y el potencial hídrico en el suelo, así como las potenciales implicaciones de la selección de un método en el manejo de los recursos naturales (agua y suelo). Metodología. En la determinación del contenido de agua en el suelo se hizo referencia a los métodos de determinación directa como el análisis gravimétrico y a otras metodologías indirectas que utilizan las propiedades electromagnéticas del suelo para inferir su contenido de agua. En la evaluación y determinación del potencial hídrico se abordaron los métodos que se realizan tanto en condiciones de campo como en el laboratorio. En el caso de las determinaciones en laboratorio se dividieron según el rango de medición desde valores altos de potencial (cercanos al suelo húmedo; tensiones < 0,1 MPa) hasta valores de potencial muy bajos (cercanos al suelo seco; 0,1 - 1,5 MPa de tensión). Análisis. Se contrastaron las distintas metodologías en función de sus fortalezas, limitaciones, así como su potencial uso en sistemas agrícolas. Conclusión. Una adecuada selección de los métodos de análisis para estas dos variables físicas del suelo resulta fundamental para gestionar eficazmente los recursos suelo y agua, generando a su vez un impacto positivo en la productividad y sostenibilidad de los sistemas agrícolas, forestales y los servicios ecosistémicos asociados.

Abstract Introduction. Currently, agricultural and forestry systems have been strongly affected by the variability in climatic phenomena such as El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO). Due to these circumstances, a proper and efficient management of natural resources like soil and water becomes mandatory to attain sustainability. Therefore, the study of soil physical properties such as soil water content and its corresponding energy state (known as water potential) is fundamental. Objective. To describe the main methodologies employed to determine soil water content and soil water potential, as well as the selection criteria and its possible implications in natural resources (soil and water) management. Methods. Within soil water content, we refer to direct methodologies such as gravimetric measurements, as well as indirect methods based on the assessment of soil electromagnetic properties. Meanwhile, methods to determine soil water potential can be separated as field and laboratory measurement methods. Within the last methods, they can be categorized depending on the range of measurement, being those high-water potential values (close to wet soil state; tension < 0.1 MPa) and low-water potential values (close to dry soil state; 0.1 - 1.5 MPa tension). Analysis. All these aforementioned methodologies were contrasted by their strengths, weaknesses, as well as its potential use within different agricultural systems. Conclusion. A proper choosing of methods for analysis of both soil physical properties becomes fundamental for a proper management of soil and water resources, impacting positively the productivity and sustainability of agriculture and forestry systems, and their associated ecosystemic services.

ABSTRACT Product innovation is essential for the growth and profitability of SMEs. Existing scientific evidence suggests that firm strategy and participation in business networks could influence this innovation. In turn, participation in networks might influence the configuration and allocation of the organizational resources and capabilities that help shape firm strategy. Hence, this study analyzes business networks as a mediator between firm strategy and product innovation in SMEs. It uses a sample of 205 SMEs from Costa Rica compiled by the Global Competitiveness Project. The proposed mediation is tested using OLS regression equations. The findings show that business networks do indeed play a mediating role in the relationship between firm strategy and product innovation, which has implications for SMEs in terms of the relevance of participating in such networks and also for public policymakers regarding the importance of managing them.

RESUMO A inovação de produtos é essencial para o crescimento e a rentabilidade das pequenas e médias empresas (PMEs). As evidências sugerem que tanto a estratégia empresarial quanto a participação em redes podem influenciar a inovação de produtos, enquanto a participação em redes também pode influenciar a configuração e a alocação de recursos e capacidades que ajudam a moldar a estratégia. O presente estudo visa analisar as redes empresariais como uma variável mediadora entre estratégia e inovação de produtos nas PMEs. O estudo utiliza uma amostra de 205 PMEs costa-riquenhas, coletada pelo Global Competitiveness Project. A mediação é testada usando um modelo de regressão. Os resultados mostram que as redes desempenham um papel mediador na relação entre a estratégia empresarial e a inovação de produtos. As conclusões têm implicações para as PMEs sobre a relevância da participação em redes que permeiam a estratégia e para os formuladores de políticas sobre a importância de gerenciar tais redes.

RESUMEN La innovación de productos es esencial para el crecimiento y rentabilidad de las PyMEs. La evidencia existente sugiere que la estrategia y participación en redes podrían influir en dicha innovación. A su vez, la participación en redes puede influir en la configuración y asignación de recursos y capacidades que ayudan a configurar la estrategia. En consecuencia, este estudio pretende analizar las redes empresariales como variable mediadora entre estrategia e innovación de productos en pymes. El estudio utiliza una muestra de 205 pymes costarricenses, recopilada por el Proyecto de Competitividad Global. La mediación se comprueba mediante un modelo de regresión. Los resultados muestran que las redes desempeñan un papel mediador en la relación entre estrategia e innovación de productos. Los hallazgos tienen implicaciones para las pymes sobre la relevancia de participar en redes que permeen la estrategia y para los responsables de política pública sobre la importancia de gestionar dichas redes.

ABSTRACT Background The pathway that links good communication skills and better health outcomes is still unclear. However, it is known that the way that physicians and patients communicate with each other has direct consequences on more “proximal outcomes”, such as perceptions of physician empathy and patient satisfaction. However, which specific communication skills lead to those patient outcomes is still unknown. In this study, the authors aimed to analyze which specific patient and physician communication skills are correlated to patients’ satisfaction with care and patient-perceived physician empathy. Methods The authors classified and quantified verbal and nonverbal communication of second-year internal medicine residents and their patients through video recordings of their consultations. Patients also rated their satisfaction with care and the physician's empathy for them. Results Using a linear regression model, the authors identified that patients’ and physicians’ expressions of disapproval, physicians’ disruptions, and patients’ use of content questions negatively correlated to patients’ satisfaction and patient-perceived physician empathy. Conversely, patient affective behaviors and the physician's provision of advice/suggestion were positively correlated to at least one of the patient-measured outcomes. Conclusion Our findings point to the importance of physicians’ attentiveness to patients’ communication cues. Training physicians to interpret those cues could help develop more satisfactory and empathic therapeutic relationships.

ABSTRACT In recent decades, minimally invasive endoscopic spine surgeries have advanced significantly, enabling effective interventions with reduced patient trauma. The lumbar transforaminal approach, which utilizes Kambin’s triangle as an anatomical reference, stands out for its clinical relevance. This article reviews the anatomy of the lumbar intervertebral foramen, emphasizing crucial anatomical variations for the safety and efficacy of the transforaminal approach in endoscopic spine surgeries. Resumo Fundamento Tem sido observado um grande avanço nas técnicas e nos dispositivos para a realização de intervenções coronárias percutâneas (ICP) em oclusões totais coronarianas crônicas (OTC), mas existem poucos dados da prática do mundo real em países em desenvolvimento. Objetivos Relatar as características clínicas e angiográficas, os aspectos dos procedimentos e os resultados clínicos da ICP de OTC em centros dedicados a esse procedimento no Brasil. Métodos Os pacientes incluídos foram submetidos à ICP de OTC em centros participantes do LATAM CTO Registry, um registro multicêntrico latino-americano dedicado à coleta prospectiva desses dados. Os critérios de inclusão foram procedimentos realizados no Brasil, idade acima de 18 anos e presença de OTC com tentativa de ICP. A definição de OTC foi lesão de 100% em uma artéria coronária epicárdica, conhecida ou estimada como tendo pelo menos 3 meses de evolução. Resultados Foram incluídos dados de 1.196 ICPs de OTC. Os procedimentos foram realizados principalmente para controle da angina (85%) e/ou tratamento de uma grande área isquêmica (24%). A taxa de sucesso técnico foi de 84% e foi alcançada com técnicas de fios anterógrados em 81%, dissecção/reentrada anterógrada em 9% e retrógrada em 10% dos procedimentos. Os eventos cardiovasculares adversos intra-hospitalares ocorreram em 2,3% dos casos, sendo a mortalidade de 0,75%. Conclusões As OTC podem ser tratadas no Brasil por intervenção coronária percutânea de forma efetiva e com baixas taxas de complicações. Abstract Background Major advances have been seen in techniques and devices for performing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) for chronic total occlusions (CTOs), but there are limited real-world practice data from developing countries. Objectives To report clinical and angiographic characteristics, procedural aspects, and clinical outcomes of CTO PCI performed at dedicated centers in Brazil. Methods Included patients underwent CTO PCI at centers participating in the LATAM CTO Registry, a Latin American multicenter registry dedicated to prospective collection of these data. Inclusion criteria were procedures performed in Brazil, age 18 years or over, and presence of CTO with PCI attempt. CTO was defined as a 100% lesion in an epicardial coronary artery, known or estimated to have lasted at least 3 months. Results Data on 1196 CTO PCIs were included. Procedures were performed primarily for angina control (85%) and/or treatment of moderate/severe ischemia (24%). Technical success rate was 84%, being achieved with antegrade wire approaches in 81% of procedures, antegrade dissection and re-entry in 9%, and retrograde approaches in 10%. In-hospital adverse cardiovascular events occurred in 2.3% of cases, with a mortality rate of 0.75%. Conclusions CTOs can be treated effectively in Brazil by using PCI, with low complication rates. Abstract Nematodes of the genus Aplectana Railliet & Henry, 1916 are common parasites of the digestive tract of amphibians and reptiles in the Neotropical region. During a parasite survey on Boana boans (Linnaeus, 1758), we found specimens of nematodes with Aplectana characteristics. We observed a set of characteristics that differs the species of our study from its congeners, and the present study describes a new species of Aplectana parasite of B. boans using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Aplectana pella n. sp. has lateral alae and somatic papillae in males and females; males have equal short spicules, and the gubernaculum is absent. The arrangement of pairs of caudal papillae also differs from other species (2 precloacal,1 adcloacal, and 5 postcloacal+1 unpaired). In females, the vulva is simple, with non-prominent lips, and equatorial. This is the first record of the genus Aplectana parasitizing B. boans and the 58th species described for this genus. Additionally, we added the precloacal papillae pattern of A. delirae, and based on morphological and morphometric characteristics, we propose the reallocation of Aplectana longa to the genus Oxyascaris.

Resumo Nematódeos do gênero Aplectana Railliet & Henry, 1.916, são parasitos comuns do trato digestório de anfíbios e répteis na região Neotropical. Durante um levantamento de parasitos em Boana boans (Linnaeus, 1.758), foram encontrados espécimes de nematódeos com características de Aplectana. Observou-se um conjunto de características que diferencia a espécie deste estudo de outros congêneres, e o presente estudo descreve uma nova espécie de Aplectana parasito de B. boans, usando-se microscopia de luz e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Aplectana pella n. sp. possui alas laterais e papilas somáticas em machos e fêmeas; os machos têm espículos curtos e iguais e gubernáculo ausente. O arranjo de pares de papilas caudais o diferencia de outras espécies (2 pré-cloacais, 1 adcloacal e 5 pós-cloacais +1 ímpar não pareada). Nas fêmeas, a vulva é simples, sem lábios proeminentes, e situada na região equatorial do corpo. Este é o primeiro registro do gênero Aplectana parasitando B. boans e a 58ª espécie descrita para esse gênero. Além disso, foi adicionado o padrão de papilas pré-cloacais de A. delirae e, com base em características morfológicas e morfométricas, foi proposta a realocação de Aplectana longa para o gênero Oxyascaris.

RESUMO Os testes funcionais de levantar-se e se sentar da cadeira de 30s (TLS30s) e o teste Timed Up and Go (TUG) são utilizados com objetivo de fornecer informações sobre o desempenho da força muscular de membros inferiores e a agilidade funcional em idosos, respectivamente. Embora ambos os testes tenham como objetivo avaliar diferentes aspectos da aptidão funcional, o nível de variância comum entre esses testes ainda não foi determinado. Assim, o presente estudo tem como objetivo verificar o nível de correlação entre os desempenhos nos testes TUG e o TLS30s e comparar os resultados com valores de referência para indivíduos idosos ativos, independentes e do sexo feminino. Participaram voluntariamente deste estudo 47 mulheres idosas saudáveis, que realizavam atividade física (hidroginástica) há pelo menos seis meses, duas vezes por semana e com duração de 60 minutos cada sessão. As idosas foram submetidas primeiramente ao teste TLS30s e na sequência ao TUG. O coeficiente de correlação de Pearson foi calculado entre o número máximo de repetições realizadas no TLS30s e o tempo gasto para executar o teste TUG. Foi verificada uma correlação significativa, porém baixa (r = -.563; p < .05) entre os dados obtidos nos testes. Baseado na baixa variância comum (31.7%) foi possível concluir que os testes realizados apresentam exigências distintas para o sistema neuromuscular. O desempenho do grupo amostra foi superior para o TLS30s comparado com os valores de referência, enquanto para o TUG o desempenho foi similar aos valores de referência.

ABSTRACT The 30-s Chair-Stand (CS30s) and the Timed Up and Go (TUG) are functional tests designed to provide information about lower limbs’ muscle strength and functional agility in the elderly. Although both tests are intended to assess different aspects of functional fitness, the level of shared variance between these tests has not been determined yet. This study aimed to verify the correlation between the TUG and the CS30s. Forty-seven healthy women volunteered to participate in this study. The participants participated in a 60-minute water exercise program that occurred twice weekly for at least 6 months. The CS30s and the TUG were administered to each subject, respectively, always in this order. The results from Pearson’s correlation were calculated using the maximal number of repetitions performed in the CS30s test and the time spent performing the TUG test. There was a significant but low correlation (r = -.563; p < .05). A shared variance of 31.7% was observed, so it is possible to speculate that these tests are related to different neuromuscular demands. The scores obtained from the CS30s were 8.1% higher than the ones found in the reference values from the literature for this target group, while the scores from the TUG were similar.

Resumo As Unidades de Conservação são um instrumento da Política Nacional de Meio Ambiente que determinou a criação de espaços para a proteção e a garantia do equilíbrio ecossistêmico no território brasileiro. A Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA) do rio Uberaba é uma Unidade de Conservação criada com o objetivo de garantir a qualidade das águas do rio Uberaba, sendo este o manancial de abastecimento público da cidade de Uberaba - MG. É caracterizada como uma unidade de conservação de uso sustentável, e algumas atividades altamente impactantes vêm sendo realizadas na sua área, com isso, causando diversas alterações no meio, tais como erosão, eutrofização de cursos d’água e alterações na qualidade e quantidade de água. O objetivo deste estudo foi estimar as perdas de solo e diagnosticar as áreas com potencial natural de erosão (PNE) utilizando a Equação Universal de Perda de Solo (EUPS), o Sistema de Informação Geográfica (SIG) e os produtos de sensoriamento remoto. O PNE apresentou valores baixos (<100 t ha-1 ano-1) em 38,72% da APA, médios (100-200 t ha-1 ano-1) em 31,29% e os valores alto (200-600 t ha-1 ano-1), muito altos (600 -1000 t ha-1 ano-1) e extremamente altos (>1.000 t ha-1 ano-1) totalizaram 29,99% da APA. As estimativas de perda de solo pela erosão hídrica com valores abaixo de 5 t ha-1 ano-1 representam 43,81% da APA. Estimativas de perdas entre 5-10 t ha-1 ano-1 ocorrem em 12,22% da área, de 10-20 t ha-1 ano-1 em 21,82%, entre 20-50 t ha-1 ano-1 em 17,89%, 50-100 t ha-1 ano-1 em 3,92% e perdas superiores a 100 t ha-1 ano-1 em 0,34% da APA. O uso das geotecnologias e da Equação Universal de Perda de Solo possibilitou identificar espacialmente os locais em que ocorrem os maiores e os menores potenciais riscos de erosão, o que permitiu estimar as taxas de perda de solo ao longo da APA do rio Uberaba.

Abstract Conservation Units are National Environment Policy instruments that determined the creation of areas for protection and guarantee of ecosystem balance in the Brazilian territory. The Uberaba River Environmental Protection Area (APA) is a water conservation unit in the city of Uberaba - MG. It is characterized as a sustainable use conservation unit, and some highly impacting activities have been occurring in this area, leading to erosion, water eutrophication, and changes in water quality and quantity. The aims of this study were to evaluate soil losses and to diagnose areas of natural potential for erosion (PNE) using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE), the Geographic Information System (GIS), and remote sensing products. Adjusted PNE was low (<100 t ha-1 year-1) in 38.72% of the APA and moderate (100-200 t ha-1 year-1) in 31.29% of the area. High (200-600 t ha-1 year-1), very high (600-1000 t ha-1 year-1), and extremely high indexes (> 1000 t ha-1 year-1) were observed in 29.99% of the APA. Estimates of soil loss due to water erosion below 5 t ha-1 year-1 represented 43.81% of the APA. Estimated losses between 5 and 10 t ha-1 year-1 occur in 12.22% of the area; from 10 to 20 t ha-1 year-1, 21.82% of the area; between 20 and 50 t ha-1 year-1,17.89% of the area; from 50 to 100 t ha-1 year-1, 3.92% of the area; and losses over 100 t ha-1 year-1 involved 0.34% of the APA. The use of geotechnology, remote sensing products, geographic information systems, and the Universal Soil Loss Equation enabled spatial identification of sites of greater and lesser potential erosion risk, which enabling the estimation of soil loss rates throughout the Uberaba River Environmental Protection Area.

Abstract Introduction Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has claimed millions of lives. Adequate protection of the professionals involved in patient care is essential in the battle against this disease. However, there is much uncertainty involving safety-relarted topics that are of particular interest to the rhinologist in the context of COVID-19. Objective To evaluate the current evidence regarding three safety-related topics: mask and respirator use, performance of nasal endoscopic procedures, and use of topical nasal and intranasal medications (saline irrigation and nasal corticosteroids). Methods A literature review was performed on the PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane databases, with standardized search queries for each of the three topics of interest. Results In total, 13 articles on mask use, 6 articles on the safety of nasal corticosteroids, 6 articles on the safety of nasal endoscopic procedures, and 1 article on nasal irrigation with saline solution were included in the final analysis. Conclusion N95 respirators are essential for the adequate protection of otolaryngologists. If reuse is necessary, physical methods of sterilization must be employed. No evidence was found to contraindicate the use of nasal corticosteroids, whether acute (in the management of sinonasal inflammatory conditions) or continued (in patients who use them chronically). Nasal irrigation with saline solution apparently does not increase the risk in the context of COVID-19. Nasal endoscopic procedures should only be performed after testing the patient for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and the surgical team must wear full personal protective equipment to prevent aerosol exposure.

RESUMEN El objetivo del trabajo fue caracterizar cepas de E. coli aisladas de Rattus norvegicus pertenecientes a un bioterio de nivel 1. Se tomaron muestras de heces a 13 ratas. Se seleccionaron cinco colonias al azar del crecimiento primario del cultivo de cada individuo muestreado. Se realizaron pruebas bioquímicas y en las cepas que fueron identifica- das como E. coli se estableció el patotipo y el filogrupo por medio de la técnica de PCR. Además, se realizaron pruebas para la formación de biopelículas y la susceptibilidad antimicrobiana. El 65% (26/40) de las cepas aisladas correspondieron a E. coli. El análisis mediante PCR mostró que todas se agruparon en el filogrupo B2. Seis de las cepas de E. coli presentaban resistencia a nitrofurantoina (23%), cuatro fueron resistentes a ampicilina (15%) y en tres cepas se observó resistencia a cefozolina (11%). Ninguna mostró la formación de biopelículas, ni la amplificación de genes relacionados a algún patotipo. Los resultados denotan que E. coli perteneciente a la biota de ratas de bioterio presenta resistencia a antibióticos y la presencia de los genes chuA y yjaA que incluyen a las cepas en el filogrupo B2 relacionado a enfermedades extraintestinales.

ABSTRACT The aim if this study was to characterize strains of E. coli isolated from Rattus norvegicus belonging to a level 1 animal facility. Faecal samples were taken from 13 rats. Five colonies were randomly selected from the primary growth of the culture of each sampled individual. Biochemical tests were performed and the pathotype and phylogroup were established in the strains that were identified as E. coli by means of the PCR technique. In addition, tests for biofilm formation and antimicrobial susceptibility were performed. Results showed that 65% (26/40) of the isolated strains corresponded to E. coli and all clustered in phylogroup B2. Six of the E. coli strains were resistant to nitrofurantoin (23%), four were resistant to ampicillin (15%), and three strains were resistant to cefozolin (11%). None showed the formation of biofilms, nor the amplification of genes related to any pathotype. The results denote that E. coli belonging to the biota of laboratory rats presents resistance to antibiotics and the presence of the chuA and yjaA genes associated with the B2 phylogroup strains related to extraintestinal diseases.

Resumen Objetivo: Identificar las implicaciones de la pandemia de COVID-19 en la trata de personas en Chihuahua durante 2020 y 2021, teniendo en cuenta los derechos humanos y el modelo ecológico. Metodología: Cualitativa mediante la exploración de casos reales y la revisión de la literatura. Resultados: Se describe la trata de personas en Chihuahua durante la pandemia y su relación con la violencia familiar, el hacinamiento y la pobreza debidos al confinamiento, factores que actúan como agentes facilitadores de dicho crimen. Valor: Se enumeran los factores de riesgo, se identifican los municipios con mayor cantidad de casos y se describen las estrategias de reclutamiento. Limitaciones: La ausencia de bases de datos confiables. Conclusiones: Hay una clara discrepancia entre las cifras de las instituciones gubernamentales y las de la sociedad civil. Las modalidades predominantes de la trata son la sexual y la laboral. Las estrategias de reclutamiento se facilitan a través de las redes sociales virtuales y de los videojuegos.

Abstract Objective: To identify the implications of COVID-19 pandemic on human trafficking in the state of Chihuahua during 2020-2021 taking into account the human rights and the ecological model. Methodology: Qualitative through the exploration of real cases and literature review. Results: The description of the human trafficking behavior during the pandemic in Chihuahua and its relation to the increase in family violence, the overcrowding, the poverty due to confinement, which are factors that act as contributing elements for victimization. Value: Listing of the risk factors, the identification of the municipalities with the highest number of cases in the state, and the description of victim recruitment mechanisms. Limitations: The absence of reliable databases. Conclusions: There is a clear discrepancy between the numbers from institutions and those from civil society. The prevalent modalities are sexual and work-related. The use of social networks and video games strengthen and enhance victim’s induction mechanisms.

RESUMEN El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar los principales peligros que los migrantes centroamericanos y mexicanos enfrentan al recurrir a los coyotes en su intención de llegar a Estados Unidos, y cómo las adversidades que afrontan se interpretan a la luz de dos de los más destacados discursos respecto del coyotaje. Con base en las Encuestas sobre Migración en las Fronteras Sur y Norte de México se examina este fenómeno, así como también las cifras de robos, asaltos y abandonos de que son víctimas estas personas por parte de los coyotes.

ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to analyze the main dangers that Central American and Mexican migrants confront when they resort to smugglers to get to the United States, and how the adversities they face are interpreted in light of two of the most outstanding discourses about smuggling. Based on surveys about migration done along Mexico’s northern and southern borders, the authors examine this phenomenon as well as the figures for thefts, assaults, and abandonment that these people suffer at the hands of smugglers.

RESUMEN Introducción: El proceso de adherencia es fundamental en el desarrollo de la mayoría de las infecciones ocasionadas por Escherichia coli. Para los patotipos de esta especie se describen tres patrones de adherencia diferentes: adherencia localizada, adherencia difusa y adherencia agregativa, los cuales se relacionan con los procesos patogénicos específicos que ocasiona en la clínica. Sin embargo, son pocos los estudios en relación con los fenotipos de adherencia in vitro de E. coli aisladas del ambiente. Objetivo: Determinar los fenotipos de adherencia de cepas de E. coli aisladas de ecosistemas dulceacuícolas de La Habana. Métodos: Se analizaron 108 cepas de E. coli aisladas de los ríos Almendares, Quibú y Luyanó de La Habana. Se determinó el patrón de adherencia mediante ensayos de adherencia en cultivo celular de la línea HEp-2 así como el serotipo de cada cepa. Resultados: El 25 % de las cepas de E. coli aisladas fueron adherentes y el 75 % fueron no adherentes. Veintidós cepas mostraron el típico patrón de adherencia difusa y cinco cepas mostraron una adherencia agregativa. Se encontraron cepas de los dos patrones de adherencia en los tres ríos evaluados. Las cepas presentaron 24 serotipos diferentes. Conclusiones: Se demostró que las cepas de E. coli ambientales circulantes en estos ecosistemas presentan características adherentes, cuya patogenicidad implica un riesgo potencial para la salud humana, especialmente en edades pediátricas.

ABSTRACT Introduction: Adherence is crucial to the development of most Escherichia coli infections. Three different adherence patterns have been described for pathotypes of this species: localized, diffuse and aggregative adherence, based on the specific clinical pathogenic processes they bring about. However, few studies have been conducted about in vitro adherence phenotypes of E. coli isolated from the environment. Objective: Determine the adherence phenotypes of E. coli strains isolated from freshwater ecosystems in Havana. Methods: An analysis was conducted of 108 E. coli strains isolated from the rivers Almendares, Quibú and Luyanó in Havana. Determination was made of the adherence pattern by adherence assays in HEp-2 cell line cultures, as well as of the serotype for each strain. Results: Of the E. coli strains isolated, 25% were adherent and 75% were not. Twenty-two strains displayed the typical diffusely adherent pattern and five displayed aggregative adherence. Strains exhibiting the two adherence patterns were found in the three rivers evaluated. The strains contained 24 different serotypes. Conclusions: The environmental E. coli strains circulating in these ecosystems were found to have adherent characteristics whose pathogenicity implies a potential risk to human health, particularly in childhood.
