Parte muito relevante do pioneirismo do seu trabalho está ligada à permanente abertura ao que as tecnologias da informação e as ferramentas digitais poderiam trazer à historiografia, não apenas enquanto utensílios de trabalho analítico mas também como potentes instrumentos de divulgação e disponibilização, em larga escala, de dados e de trabalho crítico. ABSTRACT Throughout his career as a historian, António Hespanha cultivated innovative methodological approaches with a permanent demand for acuity in the choice and exploitation of historical sources. A relevant part of his pioneering work is linked to the constant attention to what information technologies and digital tools could bring to the historiographical work, not only as analytical tools but also as powerful instruments for dissemination and accessibility, on a large scale, of data and critical work. Através da documentação conservada no Arquivo Municipal de Lisboa, este texto procura analisar a administração da justiça no final do Antigo Regime e nos primeiros anos da experiência constitucional portuguesa. Analisa-se especificamente a justiça letrada provida com participação do Senado da Câmara de Lisboa, procurando compreender o papel desta instituição na gestão do pessoal judiciário bem como a sua participação no contexto do pluralismo jurídico de Antigo Regime e na sua sobrevivência aos primeiros anos de vigência do liberalismo político na capital portuguesa.

Through the documentation preserved at Lisbon Municipal Archives, this text seeks to analyze justice administration at the end of the Ancien Régime and the early years of the Portuguese constitutional experience. It analyses specifically the learned justice under direct ruling of the Lisbon Municipality's Senate, seeking to understand the role of this institution in the management of judicial personnel as well as its participation in the context of the legal pluralism of the Old Regime and its survival in the first years of validity of political liberalism in the Portuguese capital.

Lugares ultramarinos. A construção do aparelho judicial no ultramar português da época moderna. Este texto analisa a construção de um aparelho de administração judicial a uma escala pluricontinental. Debruçando-se sobre a rede de lugares de nomeação régia, onde se exercia uma justiça letrada, procura questionar as suas características fundamentais, sublinhando a sua matriz europeia, a adaptação desta às circunstâncias locais, e o pano de fundo de pluralismo político e jurídico que marca a diferente intensidade da sua implantação. O texto estabelece uma cronologia e um mapeamento da expansão e crescimento deste aparelho, ao mesmo tempo que analisa os fatores de criação de novos lugares e que questiona o seu aparente monolitismo.

Overseas jurisdictions. The construction of the early modern Portuguese overseas judicial apparatus. This paper analyses the construction of a judicial apparatus at a pluri-continental scale. Focusing on the network of crown-appointed jurisdictions of royal law, the analysis questions its fundamental characteristics, stressing its European matrix and its adaptation to local circumstances, in a background of political and legal pluralism that explains the different range and intensity of its implementation. The text sets out a timeline and maps the expansion and growth of this apparatus at the same time as it analyses the creation of new jurisdictions and questions its apparent monolithic character.

Resumo O século XVIII marca o crescimento e complexificação da estrutura judicial da Coroa portuguesa no Brasil. As oportunidades de carreira florescem e há um duplo movimento de agentes: por um lado, magistrados que vêm do reino; por outro, um crescente número de naturais da América portuguesa que ingressam na carreira das letras. Partindo dos dados recolhidos nas habilitações do Santo Ofício, este texto centra-se nos juízes letrados com serviço nos domínios portugueses da América, procurando compreender o papel desempenhado pela obtenção da familiatura na progressão da sua carreira e a sua eventual inserção em redes de recrutamento ou provimento no eixo Coimbra-Lisboa.

Abstract The eighteenth century represents an increase in size and complexity of the judicial structure of the Portuguese crown in Brazil. Career opportunities flourish and there is a double movement of agents: on the one hand, judges who come from the kingdom; on the other, a growing number of Brazilian-born judges who start a career in Justice. Based on the data collected on the qualifications to be member of the Holy Office, this text isolates the learned judges that served in the Portuguese territories of America, trying to understand the role played by the familiatura in the progression of their career, and their possible inclusion in recruitment or appointment networks in the Coimbra-Lisbon axis.

A Casa da Suplicação era o mais importante tribunal judicial da coroa portuguesa, com jurisdição, em última instância, sobre o reino e a totalidade dos territórios sob domínio português. Este texto analisa o tribunal na transição do século XVIII para o XIX, período que culminará na transferência da corte para o Brasil. Depois de um enquadramento institucional onde se analisa a organização interna do tribunal, o texto traça um perfil dos desembargadores que serviram a Casa da Suplicação entre 1790 e 1810, terminando com um estudo exploratório sobre o seu funcionamento, através de uma análise quantitativa da sua produção processual e uma distribuição geográfica da origem dos processos que subiam a este tribunal central.

The Casa da Suplicação was the most important judicial court of the Portuguese crown. Its jurisdiction, in last resort, included the whole of Portugal and all its overseas territories. This text analyses the court in the transition from the 18th to the 19th century, a period that will end up with the transfer of the royal court to Brazil. After drawing its institutional framework, where the internal organization of the court is described, the text traces the profile of the magistrates that served the Casa da Suplicação between 1790 and 1810. It concludes with an exploratory study on its functioning, through a quantitative analysis of its bureaucratic production and a geographic distribution of the origins of the files that were submitted to this central court.
