Abstract The study starts from two analogous works, a book and a pamphlet, produced in the 16th century, which portray Nicolas Durand de Villegagnon as the Cyclops Polyphemus, a figure established by classical texts such as the Odyssey by Homer and Cyclops by Euripides. Through this unusual comparison between a mythological monster and the Knight of Malta, both the poem and the etching represent Villegagnon and vilify him through certain discursive strategies. Such an invective project is grounded in religious, political, and economic quarrels which have taken place in the context of the enterprise known as ‘France Antarctique’ in Guanabara Bay. Resumo O estudo parte de duas obras análogas - um livro e um folheto - produzidas no século XVI e que retratam Nicolas Durand de Villegagnon como o Ciclope Polifemo, figura estabelecida por textos clássicos como a Odisseia, de Homero, e o Ciclope, de Eurípides. Através dessa inusitada comparação entre um monstro mitológico e o Cavaleiro de Malta, tanto o poema quanto a gravura presentes no livro e folheto representam Villegagnon e o aviltam por meio de estratégias discursivas. Tal projeto invectivo tem fundamentos em querelas religiosas, políticas e econômicas no contexto do empreendimento conhecido como “França Antártica” na Baía de Guanabara. Résumé L'étude part de deux ouvrages analogues, un livre et un pamphlet, publiés au XVIesiècle. Ils présentent Nicolas Durand de Villegagnon comme le Cyclope Polyphème, figure mythologique établie par des textes classiques tels que l'Odyssée et le Cyclope d’Euripide. Avec cette comparaison insolite entre un monstre mythologique et le chevalier de Malte, le poème et le pamphlet vilipendent Villegagnon avec un certain nombre de stratégies discursives. Un tel projet d'invective a ses fondements sur des querelles religieuses, politiques et économiques qui ont lieu dans le contexte de l'entreprise connue sous le nom de « France Antarctique » dans la Baie de Guanabara. Resumo: O conceito moderno de ‘estilo’ - dο qual deriva o de ‘estilística’, disciplina que foi testemunha da querela entre a Linguística e os estudos literários no século XX - herdou da Retórica antiga o seu conteúdo (figuras e tropos) e foi largamente usado como tradução direta do conceito latino ‘elocutio’ (em especial no tratado De elocutione [Περὶ ἑρμηνείας], de Demétrio), e como tradução (no geral, indireta) de conceitos gregos, como ἑρμηνεία, λέξις e φράσις. Há ainda outros conceitos que parecem intimamente ligados ao de estilo, como os de ‘ornatum’ e ‘decorum’. Compreendendo que as referências clássicas do conceito de ‘estilo’ se mostram essenciais para a escrita da história deste conceito moderno, este artigo buscará apresentar um catálogo de conceitos antigos que encontraram no ‘estilo’ (ou style, em inglês e francês) a sua tradição tradutória, além de tentar construir uma breve história de cada um desses percursos tradutórios.

Abstract: The modern concept of ‘style’ - from which ‘stylistics’ is derived, a discipline that witnessed the quarrel between Linguistics and Literary studies in the 20th century - has inherited from Ancient Rhetoric its substance (figures and tropes) and was largely used as a direct translation from the Latin concept ‘elocutio’ (especially in Demetrius’ treatise De elocutione [Περὶ ἑρμηνείας]) and also as a translation for Greek concepts (usually indirectly), such as ἑρμηνεία, λέξις and φράσις. There are still some other concepts that seem intimately connected to ‘style’, for instance ‘ornatum’ and ‘decorum’. Considering that classical references of ‘style’ present themselves essential to write the history of this modern concept, this paper seeks to present a catalog of ancient concepts that have found in ‘style’ (in English and French) their traditional translation, as well as attempting to build a short history of each of these translation paths.

Resumo O vitalismo canguilhemiano não é evidente, tampouco é uma forma mais conhecida desse tipo de pensamento; não nasce das antigas diatribes que, do século XVIII, invadiram as polêmicas do XIX. Canguilhem reabilita o vitalismo a partir de uma abordagem ontológica única, para a qual ele não hesita em referenciar-se nos antigos e, de modo geral, num Hipócrates que, lido sobretudo por meio da história escrita por Charles Singer, traz à tona outros temas, como a crítica ao conceito de homeostase revivido e nomeado por Walter Cannon. Canguilhem redimensiona a homeostase hipocrática que Cannon cientificizou, dando-lhe uma mobilidade que lhe é conceitualmente essencial, e redesenha o projeto do vitalismo, recusando-lhe a antítese do mecanicismo. Dessa forma, Canguilhem foi buscar ou se respaldar num Hipócrates lido pelos historiadores da medicina (e das ciências biomédicas). Este artigo procurou mapear a contribuição de longa duração de Georges Canguilhem para o discurso médico, bem como seu papel fundador de uma nova concepção de normalidade a partir da sua concepção de vitalismo, que, para ele, é herdeira de um “espírito hipocrático”.

Abstract Canguilhem’s vitalism is not obvious, neither does is consist of a more known form of this type of thinking; it does not come from the old diatribes that, coming from the 19th century, are still relevant to the 20th century’s discussions. Canguilhem reclaims vitalism from a unique ontological approach, and does not hesitate to allude to the classics and, most of all, to a Hippocrates that, read mainly through the perspective of the history written by Charles Singer, brings to light other themes such as the critic to the concept of homeostasis revitalized and named by Walter Cannon. Canguilhem gives another perspective to Hippocrates’ homeostasis, that was “scientified” by Cannon, giving it mobility that is considered essential to its concept and redraws the vitalism project, rejecting the place of mechanism antithesis. This paper aimed to map Canguilhem’s longue durée contribution to the medical discourse, as well as his funding role of a new conception of normality formulated from his own interpretation of a vitalism that, in his point of view, comes from a “Hippocratic spirit”.

Apresenta-se aqui, em língua portuguesa, o tratado mais antigo que o Ocidente nos legou acerca da oftalmologia, "Sobre a visão" ou em latim De uisu, com um estudo introdutório que tem por fim situá-lo na história da medicina, sem, contudo, abdicar da demonstração das dificuldades filológicas que o texto encerra.

We present here in Portuguese the oldest treatise that the West has bequeathed us about ophthalmology and eyesight in general, namely "On vision" or De uisu in Latin, with an introductory study that seeks to situate its place in the history of medicine, without, however, failing to dwell on the philological difficulties that the text contains.

O Modus curandi cum balsamo é um texto breve, impresso em c.1530, escrito em baixo latim ibérico e de autor desconhecido. O que o torna importante à primeira vista é o fato de ter sido este um dos primeiros textos médicos impressos em Portugal. Mas definitivamente tem valores outros que sustentam até mesmo essa sua primazia. Apresenta um bálsamo, como o título indica, que é capaz de curar especialmente feridas profundas. Sua receita é peculiar, e mais peculiar ainda é o tom propagandístico do breve tratado. Além da receita, fornecem-nos recomendações de como aplicá-lo, especialmente no crânio, do qual se fala de uma ferida que vai da dura-máter à 'substância' da cabeça, e tal ferida, segundo o tratado, deve ser previamente drenada para a aplicação do bálsamo.

Modus curandi cum balsamo is a short text, printed circa 1530 and written by an unknown author in Vulgar Latin from the Iberian peninsula. Its value stems first from the fact that it was one of the first medical texts printed in Portugal. But other aspects definitely reinforce this importance. As the title indicates, the text describes a balm that can cure very deep wounds. The prescription is strange, and even stranger is the propagandizing tone of this brief treatise. The prescription comes with recommendations on how to apply the remedy, especially to the cranium. Reference is made to a wound that goes from the dura mater to the "substance" of the head; according to the treatise, this wound should first be drained before applying the balm.
