Resumo Introdução: A tomada de decisão (TD) é uma das habilidades mais relevantes para a funcionalidade. No entanto, esta habilidade é geralmente avaliada por meio de tarefas comportamentais, cuja validade ecológica tem sido questionada. De acordo com a literatura, a avaliação da TD deve ser complementada por questionários ou escalas, instrumentos estes que não estão disponíveis no português brasileiro. Desta forma, o objetivo deste estudo foi a tradução e validação de uma versão do Melbourne Decision Making Questionnaire (MDMQ), o instrumento mais amplamente utilizado na avaliação da TD, para uso em português. Métodos: A adaptação da MDMQ foi realizada através da tradução, retrotradução, avaliação por painel de juízes e estudo piloto. A versão da escala produzida neste processo foi submetida a análise fatorial e avaliação de consistência interna, levando a exclusão de 4 itens da escala original. A versão resultante da MDMQ, contando com 18 itens no total, foi então utilizada em estudo de validação, em que a TD foi comparada entre adultos saudáveis e portadores de depressão e transtorno bipolar. Resultados: O instrumento demonstrou consistência interna satisfatória, apesar da obtenção de alfas de Cronbach relativamente baixos para a subescala de hipervigilância. A estrutura fatorial do questionário traduzido foi semelhante a observada no instrumento original. Todas as medidas derivadas da MDMQ, mostraram-se discriminativas na comparação entre adultos saudáveis e portadores de transtornos mentais. Conclusão: A versão da MDMQ produzida neste estudo poderá realizar uma importante contribuição para a prática clínica e pesquisa neuropsicológica acerca da TD.

Abstract Introduction: Decision making (DM) is among the most important abilities for everyday functioning. However, the most widely used measures of DM come from behavioral paradigms, whose ecological validity and standalone use has been criticized in the literature. Though these issues could be addressed by the use of DM questionnaires as a complementary assessment method, no such instruments have been validated for use in Brazilian Portuguese. Therefore, the aim of this study was to conduct the translation and validation of the Melbourne Decision Making Questionnaire (MDMQ) for use in a Brazilian population. Methods: The adaptation of the MDMQ involved the following steps: translation, back-translation, expert review and pilot study. These steps were followed by factor analysis and internal consistency measurements, which led to the exclusion of 4 items from the scale. The 18-item version of the MDMQ was then administered to a validation sample consisting of healthy adults, as well as patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Results: The instrument displayed good internal consistency, with the hypervigilance subscale showing the lowest, though still acceptable, Cronbach's alpha value. Its factor structure was comparable to that of the original MDMQ according to confirmatory factor analysis. Nevertheless, the MDMQ was sensitive to both depression severity and the presence of MDD and BD, both of which are known to have an impact on DM ability. Conclusion: The version of the MDMQ produced in the present study may be an important addition to neuropsychological assessment batteries with a focus on DM and related abilities

Déficits em processamento comunicativo léxico-semântico podem acompanhar quadros neurológicos. Mas, pouco se sabe do efeito terapêutico de intervenções léxico-semânticas.OBJETIVO: Esta revisão sistemática caracterizou estudos com este tipo de intervenção, em pacientes adultos com demência, pós TCE e pós AVC.MÉTODOS: Analisaram-se estudos publicados entre 2004 e 2014 nas bases de dados PubMed, PsycInfo e SCOPUS, com descritores dos construtos reabilitação, quadro neurológico adquirido, comunicação e componente léxico-semântico.RESULTADOS: Dos 453 estudos encontrados, 28 foram selecionados, seguindo método prisma. Destes, a maioria apresentava terapia para anomia. As técnicas mais empregadas foram de processamento léxico-semântico, seguida pelo fonológico e gestual. Em sua maioria, a intervenção ocorreu na modalidade individual, com uso de tarefas formais, apesar da variabilidade do número, frequência e duração das sessões.CONCLUSÃO: Os tratamentos propiciaram melhora no desempenho na avaliação pós-intervenção. No entanto, há limitações da intervenção léxico-semântica, especialmente quanto à descrição teórica das técnicas e faltam estudos de eficácia, de efetividade, e de acompanhamento.

Lexical-semantic impairments are common consequences of acquired neurological damage. However, little is known about the benefits of existing treatment methods for this type of language impairment.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate current research into lexical-semantic interventions for adults with dementia, TBI or stroke.METHODS: The PubMed, PsycInfo and SCOPUS databases were searched for studies related to rehabilitation, neurological conditions, communicative and lexical-semantic skills published between 2004 and 2014.RESULTS: Twenty-eight of the 453 abstracts found were selected for the review based on the PRISMA method. Most of the studies described treatments for anomia. Semantic tasks were the most commonly used, followed by phonological and gestural strategies. Interventions were individual and involved formal tasks, although the number, frequency and duration of sessions varied between studies.CONCLUSION: Although lexical-semantic interventions lead to improvements in language abilities, they are still poorly described in the literature, and must be further investigated in terms of their efficacy, effectiveness and long-term effects.

El traumatismo craneoencefálico (TCE) se caracteriza por presentar complejidad clínica y frecuente ocurrencia de déficits en funciones ejecutivas como la Toma de Decisión (TD), los cuales aún permanecen insuficientemente investigados. El objetivo de la revisión sistemática fue caracterizar investigaciones empíricas que midieran la TD con instrumentos de evaluación de desempeño en adultos post-TCE, en cuanto a los objetivos, paradigmas utilizados, muestras de base y principales hallazgos. Fueron consultadas las bases Web of Science, PubMed/MEDLINE y PsycInfo por publicaciones entre 2003 y 2013, con las palabras clave "decision making" AND "traumatic brain injury". De los 800 abstracts inicialmente encontrados, 16 estudios fueron incluidos en la revisión después del análisis doble ciego. Los principales paradigmas utilizados fueron, en orden decreciente, Iowa Gambling Task, Cambridge Gambling Task, Simple/Choice Reaction Time, Tarea de Descuento Temporal y el Game of Dice Task. Los estudios evaluados dejaron en evidencia perjuicios ejecutivos de TD en pacientes post-TCE. Sin embargo, dos estudios no encontraron impacto en la TD de factores como el lugar de las lesiones encefálicas o el nivel de severidad del TCE. Algunas limitaciones se destacan, como la variabilidad en el tiempo post-lesión y ausencia o bajo control de variables psicopatológicas.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is associated with significant cognitive impairment, especially in executive functions such as decision making (DM). However, the nature of such impairments has not been sufficiently investigated. The aim of the present review was to analyze current research on DM following TBI involving behavioral tests, describing and discussing the objectives, method, and findings of these studies. Articles published between 2003 and 2013 were retrieved from the Web of Science, PubMed/MEDLINE and Psyclnfo databases using the keywords "decision making" AND "traumatic brain injury." Sixteen of the 800 abstracts located were selected by two independent researchers for inclusion in the review. The most commonly used instruments for assessing TD were, in descending order: Iowa Gambling Task, Cambridge Gambling Task, Simple/Choice Reaction Time, Temporal Discounting Task and the Game of Dice Task. Although patients with TBI tended to exhibit DM impairments, two studies found no associations between DM impairment, TBI severity or the location of brain lesions. Limitations of the studies reviewed included the variability in time since TBI at assessment and the lack of control of psychopathological variables.

O Traumatismo Cranioencefálico (TCE), caracteriza-se por complexidade clínica e frequente ocorrência de déficits em funções executivas como a tomada de decisão (TD), os quais permanecem ainda insuficientemente investigados. O objetivo da revisão sistemática foi caracterizar investigações empíricas que mensuraram a TD com instrumentos de avaliação de desempenho em adultos pós-TCE, quanto aos objetivos, paradigmas utilizados, amostras de base e principais achados. Foram consultadas as bases Web of Science, PubMed/MEDLINE e PsycInfo por publicações entre 2003 e 2013, com as palavras-chave "decision making" e "traumatic brain injury". Dos 800 abstracts inicialmente encontrados, 16 estudos foram incluídos na revisão após análise duplocega. Os principais paradigmas utilizados foram, em ordem decrescente, Iowa Gambling Task, Cambridge Gambling Task, Simple/Choice Reaction Time, Tarefa de Desconto Temporal e o Game of Dice Task. Os estudos avaliados evidenciaram prejuízo executivos de TD em pacientes pós-TCE. Ainda, dois estudos não encontraram impacto na TD de fatores como o local das lesões encefálicas ou o nível de severidade do TCE. Algumas limitações são apontadas como a variabilidade no tempo pós-lesão e ausência ou baixo controle de variáveis psicopatológicas.

RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar o papel preditivo da educação e da frequência de hábitos de leitura e de escrita (FHLE) na flexibilidade cognitiva e planejamento de idosos saudáveis. Métodos: Cinquenta e sete adultos saudáveis com idade entre 60 e 75 anos e de 2 a 23 anos de escolaridade foram avaliados quanto à frequência com que liam e escreviam diferentes tipos de texto, assim como seu número de anos de educação formal. Ainda, suas funções executivas foram examinadas pelos Testes Hayling e Wisconsin de Classificação de Cartas Modificado (MWCST). Resultados: Correlações positivas de fracas a moderadas foram encontradas entre a educação, a FHLE e o número de categorias completadas no MWCST. Ainda, estas variáveis correlacionaram-se negativamente com o número de erros perseverativos e não perseverativos na tarefa. Somente a FRWH correlacionou-se com o número de rupturas no MWCST. O tempo e acurácia no Teste Hayling correlacionaram-se apenas com a educação de participantes. Tanto a educação quanto a FHLE foram preditores significativos do desempenho no MWCST, e a combinação destas duas variáveis teve maior impacto no desempenho da tarefa do que qualquer uma delas isoladamente. A variabilidade no desempenho no teste Hayling foi melhor explicada pela educação dos idosos. Conclusão: Nesta amostra de indivíduos idosos, a flexibilidade cognitiva esteve suficientemente preservada para permitir um desempenho adequado em tarefas verbais. No entanto, pode ter se beneficiado do estímulo adicional fornecido por hábitos de leitura e escrita regulares e por maior quantidade de anos de estudo formal em demandas não-verbais mais complexas.

ABSTRACT Objective: To assess the predictive role of education and frequency of reading and writing habits (FRWH) on the cognitive flexibility, inhibition and planning abilities of healthy elderly individuals. Methods: Fifty-seven healthy adults aged between 60 and 75 years with 2 to 23 years of formal education were assessed as to the frequency with which they read and wrote different types of text, as well as their number of years of formal education. Executive functions were evaluated using the Hayling Test and the Modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (MWCST). Results: Weak to moderate positive correlations were found between education, FRWH and the number of categories completed in the MWCST, while negative correlations were identified between these variables and the number of perseverative and non-perseverative errors on the task. Only the FRWH was significantly correlated with the number of failures to maintain set. Speed and accuracy on the Hayling Test were only correlated with participant education. Both education and FRWH significantly predicted performance on the MWCST, and the combination of these two variables had a greater predictive impact on performance on this task than either of the two variables alone. Variability in scores on the Hayling Test was best accounted for by participant education. Conclusion: In this sample of elderly subjects, cognitive flexibility was sufficiently preserved to allow for adequate performance on verbal tasks, but may have benefitted from the additional stimulation provided by regular reading and writing habits and by formal education in the performance of more complex non-verbal tasks.

Executive functions (EF) have been a major focus of interest in neuropsychology. However, there are few studies about their development in healthy children. To fill this gap in the literature, the current study aims to compare the performance in EF tasks in children from 6 to 12 (n=90) years old. Three age groups (6-7, 8-10 and 11-12 years-old) were assessed using the following instruments: verbal fluency, narrative discourse, random number generation, N-Back, Bells Test and Hayling Test. Analyses of variance were used to compare the scores among groups. There was a significant effect of age in all executive performance scores, especially between the youngest and oldest groups. The most significant differences were observed in the central executive component of working memory and inhibition, which showed a marked development between 6-7 and 8-10 years of age. In addition, a remarkable peak was observed in the tasks that assess planning and processing speed in the group of 11-12 year-old children. The current results suggest that the development of all components of EF should be further investigated in school-aged children in normative studies so that possible dissociations in the development of these abilities can be better understood.
