Resumo Vários estudos enfatizam o uso de pelotas de coruja em inventários de pequenos mamíferos em áreas naturais com elevada riqueza de espécies raras, mas poucas localidades da Mata Atlântica brasileira têm sido inventariadas por esse método. O presente estudo documenta a composição de espécies e abundância de pequenos mamíferos na dieta de Tyto furcata em uma área urbana do município de Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, discutindo a relevância de um novo registro de um raro marsupial do gênero Cryptonanus na Mata Atlântica. Foram analisadas 265 pelotas regurgitadas por um casal de T. furcata entre novembro de 2016 e setembro de 2017, encontradas abaixo de uma caixa de nidificação. A análise das amostras permitiu encontrar o total de 596 indivíduos de quatro espécies pequenas de mamíferos. O roedor exótico Mus musculus foi predominante entre os itens alimentares (98,3%), enquanto os roedores nativos Necromys lasiurus (1,3%) e Holochilus brasiliensis (0,17%) foram bem mais raros. Um único espécime de Cryptonanus sp. foi identificado entre os itens com base em caracteres dentários. A identificação desse gênero no presente estudo representa o segundo registro no estado do Rio de Janeiro e o sexto no bioma Mata Atlântica, sugerindo que este marsupial ocupa uma ampla faixa ecológica e biogeográfica. O presente estudo destaca a relevância dos pellets de coruja para pesquisas com pequenos mamíferos, mesmo em áreas urbanas e altamente perturbadas.

Abstract Several studies emphasize the use of owl pellets in small mammal inventories in natural areas harboring high richness of rare species, but few Brazilian Atlantic forest localities have been surveyed by this method. The present study documents the species composition and abundance of small mammals in the diet of Tyto furcata in an urban area of the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, remarking on a new record of the dwarf mouse opossum genus Cryptonanus in the Atlantic forest. We analyzed 265 pellets regurgitated by a pair of T. furcata from November 2016 to September 2017 found in a nesting box. Analysis of the samples enabled finding a total of 596 individuals of four small mammal species. Mus musculus was predominant among the prey items (98.3%), while the native rodents Necromys lasiurus (1.3%) and Holochilus brasiliensis (0,17%) were much rarer. A single specimen of Cryptonanus sp. was identified among the diet items based on distinctive dental characters. The identification of this genus in the present study represents the second record in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and the sixth in the Atlantic Forest biome, suggesting that this marsupial occupies a wider ecological and biogeographic range. The present study underscores the relevance of owl pellets for small mammal surveys, even in urban and highly disturbed areas.

The neutrophil is an important cell in host defense against infections, acting as the first line of microorganism control. However, this cell exhibits dysregulated activity in sepsis and may contribute to the pathogenesis of the disease. This systematic review aimed to highlight the major scientific findings regarding neutrophil activity in sepsis reported in clinical and experimental research published in the last 10 years. The search was conducted in the Virtual Health Library of PAHO-WHO (BVS) and PubMed databases, and articles published between January 2007 and May 2017 in Portuguese, English, and Spanish were eligible. Article selection was carried out independently by two reviewers (CB and IB). A total of 233 articles were found, of which 87 were identified on PubMed and 146 on BVS. Eighty-two articles were duplicates. Of the remaining 151 articles, 19 met the inclusion criteria after title, abstract, and full-text analysis. Overall, research in clinical samples and animal models of sepsis showed reduced capacity of neutrophils to migrate and delayed apoptosis, but there was no consensus on the phagocytic activity of neutrophils in sepsis. Molecules, such as pentraxin 3 (PTX3), have been analyzed as potential diagnostic markers in sepsis but the diversity of soluble molecules detected in blood samples of sepsis patients did not enable further understanding of the correlation of these circulating molecules with neutrophil activity during sepsis. Optimal understanding of the function of neutrophils in sepsis remains a challenge that, if overcome, would eventually allow targeted therapeutic interventions in patients affected by this severe syndrome.

RESUMO Objetivou-se avaliar os efeitos do zinco ou do propilenoglicol sobre o desempenho e nas características da carcaça e da carne de ovinos sob pastejo em pastagem nativa da Caatinga. Utilizaram-se 24 ovinos, mestiços Santa Inês, machos, não castrados, peso inicial de 19,3±2,52kg, com quatro meses de idade, oito repetições por tratamento, distribuídos em um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso. Os tratamentos foram: sem aditivo, controle (CT), adição de sulfato de zinco (ZnSO4.7H2O) (Zn) para fornecimento de 300mg de Zn dia-1 via sal mineral, e propilenoglicol (PG), 2,5mL kgPC0,75-1 animal-1 dia-1 misturado no concentrado. Os animais foram suplementados com concentrado constituído de milho (54,0%), farelo de soja (45,1%) e calcário (0,911%) em 0,7% do PC médio de cada tratamento. O ensaio foi conduzido durante quatro meses (março a junho/2014). Avaliaram-se o desempenho e, após o abate dos animais, as características de carcaça e os componentes não carcaça, os parâmetros físico-químicos e organolépticos na carne. O Zn e o propilenoglicol não afetaram o desempenho e os parâmetros da carcaça em termos absoluto e relativo, bem como os pesos dos cortes e seus rendimentos (P>0,05). Não houve efeito dos aditivos nas características organolépticas e nos aspectos físico-químicos da carne (P>0,05), exceto cinzas (P<0,05). O zinco e o propilenoglicol não melhoram o desempenho e as características da carcaça de animais terminados em pastagem nativa da Caatinga. O baixo suprimento energético devido à má qualidade do pasto entre os meses de abril a junho contribui para a ineficiência no aproveitamento dos constituintes proteicos, implicando menor consumo e consequente diminuição do desempenho.

ABSTRACT The aim was to evaluate the effects of zinc sulfate or propylene glycol on performance and carcass and meat characteristics from sheep under grazing in native Caatinga (Brazilian savannah) pasture during the rainy season. Twenty-four intact Santa Ines crossbreed male lambs, with an initial weight of 19.3±2.52kg, and 4-mo old, were distributed in a completely randomized design with eight replications per treatment. The treatments were composed of additives, as follows: no additive - control (CT); addition of zinc sulfate (ZnSO4.7H2O) (Zn) to supply a total of 300mg Zn day−1 on mineral salt; and addition of propylene glycol (PG), 2.5mL kg LW0.75−1 animal−1 day−1 mixed directly in the concentrate. Afterwards, they were supplemented with concentrate at 0.7% of the average LW of each batch according to the treatments. The concentrate was based on corn (54.0%), soybean meal (45.1%), and limestone (0.911%). The trials were carried out during the rainy season (March to June 2014), and evaluated the performance, and before of slaughter, carcass characteristics and non-carcass components were evaluated and the physical-chemical aspects and the organoleptic attributes on the meat. The additives did not affect the performance, parameters of carcass, in terms absolute and relative, carcass morphometric measurements, weight of the commercial cuts and yields (P>0.05). The additives did not affect the organoleptic characteristics and physical-chemical aspects of the meat (P>0.05), except, ash (P<0.05). The zinc sulfate and propylene glycol did not improve on performance and in carcass characteristics in lambs finished on a native Caatinga (Brazilian savannah) pasture. The low supply energetic due to poor quality of pasture between the months of April to June, which contributed to inefficiency in the utilization of proteics constituents, implying in lower intake, and decrease in performance.

Foram utilizadas três vacas não lactantes fistuladas no rúmen com o objetivo de determinar os parâmetros de degradação ruminal in situ da matéria seca (MS) e do amido de grãos de sorgo sob diferentes formas de processamento: 1) Seco e moído (2mm); 2) Seco, moído (3mm), reidratado com aspersão de água sobre o material, e imediatamente ensilado por 30 dias; 3) Seco, inteiro, reidratado por três dias em tubo PVC e, em seguida, moído a 5mm; 4) Seco, inteiro, reidratado por três dias em tubo PVC com aplicação de ar comprimido e, em seguida, moído a 5mm; 5) Seco, inteiro, reidratado por três dias em tubo PVC e, em seguida, moído a 5mm, e ensilado por 30 dias; 6) Seco, inteiro, reidratado por três dias em tubo PVC com aplicação de ar comprimido, moído a 5mm e ensilado por 30 dias. Os teores de proteína bruta, amido, e fibra em detergente neutro (% da MS) variaram de 9,8 a 10,8%; 59,5 a 67,5%; e de 16,1 a 19,3%, respectivamente. Os teores de umidade nos grãos que foram reidratados variaram de 35,8 a 43,9% da MS. A taxa e a extensão de degradação do amido e a degradabilidade potencial da MS foram semelhantes (P>0,05) entre tratamentos. Os grãos de sorgo reidratados com aplicação de ar comprimido, moídos e ensilados (tratamento 6) apresentaram degradabilidade efetiva (DE) da MS e DE do amido sob taxa de passagem ruminal de 2%/h, semelhantes (P>0,05) às observadas para o tratamento 5 (sem aplicação de ar comprimido), e superiores (P<0,05) às dos demais processamentos. Sob taxas de passagem no rúmen de 5 e 8%/h, as DE do amido estimadas para os grãos processados no tratamento 6 foram superiores (P<0,05) às obtidas para os demais tratamentos. O processamento de reidratação por três dias com aplicação de ar comprimido e ensilagem por trinta dias aumentou a degradabilidade efetiva da matéria seca e do amido dos grãos de sorgo, e sua utilização pode ser recomendada para animais em níveis intermediário e elevado de desempenho.

Used three non-lactating cows fistulated in the rumen in order to determine the parameters of in situ ruminal degradation of dry matter (DM) and starch grain sorghum under different forms of processing: 1) Dried and ground (2mm); 2) Dry, crushed (3mm), rehydrated with water spray on the material and immediately ensiled for 30 days, 3) Dry, round, rehydrated for three days in PVC pipe and then crushed to 5mm, 4 ) Dry, full-rehydrated for three days in PVC tube with application of compressed air and then ground to 5mm; 5) Dry, full-rehydrated for three days in PVC pipe and then ground to 5mm, and ensiled for 30 days; 6) Dry, full-rehydrated for three days in PVC tube with application of compressed air, ground to 5mm and ensiled for 30 days. The crude protein, starch, and neutral detergent fiber (% of DM) ranged from 9.8 to 10.8%, 59.5 to 67.5%, and 16.1 to 19.3%, respectively. The moisture in the grains that were rehydrated ranged from 35.8 to 43.9% DM. The rate and extent of starch degradation and the degradability of MS were similar (P>0.05) between treatments. The grain sorghum rehydrated with application of compressed air, ground and ensiled (treatment 6), showed effective degradability (ED) of DM, and DE starch under ruminal passage rate of 2%/h, similar (P>0.05 ) those observed for treating 5 (without application of compressed air) and higher (P<0.05) to the other processing. Under rumen passage rates of 5 and 8%/h, the estimated NDs starch for processed grains in treatment 6 were higher (P<0.05) than those obtained for the other treatments. Processing rehydration for three days with compressed air application and silage for thirty days increased the effective degradability of dry matter and starch grain sorghum, and its use can be recommended for animals in intermediate and high performance.

Avaliou-se o efeito de dietas distintas sobre o comportamento ingestivo (alimentação, ruminação e ócio) em ovinos. Dezesseis carneiros, castrados, confinados em gaiolas de metabolismo, com peso médio de 45,1kg, foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em quatro tratamentos: T1- silagem de cana + concentrado; T2- silagem de cana + concentrado + 15% de caroço de algodão; T3- silagem de cana e T4- feno de Tifton 85. Os animais foram submetidos à observação visual durante 24 horas a intervalos de 10 minutos. Houve diferença entre os tratamentos com relação aos tempos despendidos com alimentação e ócio, sendo que o tratamento com feno de Tifton 85 apresentou os mais altos valores, 6,04 h/dia, para o tempo de alimentação, e os mais baixos valores para o tempo de ócio, 7,50 h/dia.

The effects of different diets on the ingestive feeding behavior in wethers (feeding, ruminating and idle) were evaluated. Sixteen wethers with an average weight of 45.1kg were housed in metabolic cages and were randomly assigned to four treatments (T1- sugarcane silage + concentrate; T2- sugarcane silage + concentrate + 15% whole cottonseed; T3- sugarcane and T4- hay Tifton 85). The ingestive behavior was assessed by visual observation at 10 minute intervals for 24 hours. There were differences between treatments for time spent feeding and idle, and the treatment with Tifton 85 hay showed the highest values for feeding time, 6.04 h/day, and lower values for idle time, 7.50h/day.

Ovelhas Santa Inês com gestação simples e múltipla foram alimentadas com dietas formuladas para atender a 100% - grupo não restrito - e 85% - grupo restrito - das suas necessidades de energia metabolizável (EM) e proteína bruta (PB). Os animais foram abatidos aos 140 dias de gestação para a retirada do útero da glândula mamária e do útero gestante, os quais foram analisados para o conteúdo de cálcio e de fósforo em função dos tratamentos. A restrição nutricional não influenciou as concentrações de cálcio e fósforo no feto e no útero gestante. Foi observado um aumento de 11,68 gramas de cálcio e de 6,37 gramas de fósforo para cada quilograma de massa fetal produzido aos 140 dias de gestação. As concentrações de cálcio e de fósforo do útero e das membranas foram mais baixas nas ovelhas gestantes submetidas à restrição nutricional. O número de fetos e o manejo nutricional não resultaram em alterações na concentração nem no conteúdo de cálcio e fósforo nos fluidos fetais. O conteúdo de cálcio e de fósforo no útero gestante teve como principal fator de variação o tamanho da massa fetal produzida.

Santa Inês breed ewes with single and multiple gestations were fed diets to meet 100% - Group ad libitum - and 85% - restricted group - of metabolizable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP) needs. The animals were slaughtered at 140 days of gestation for the removal of the gravidic uterus and mammary gland which were analyzed for calcium and phosphorus content. The nutritional restriction did not influence the calcium and phosphorus concentrations in the fetus and the pregnant uterus. The calcium and phosphorus content in the gravidic utero increased 11.68 grams and 6.37 grams for each kilogram of fetal mass produced at 140 days of gestation respectively. The calcium and phosphorus concentration in the uterus and membranes were lower in pregnant ewes subjected to nutritional restriction. The number of fetuses and nutritional management did not result in changes in the concentration or amount of calcium and phosphorus in fetal fluids. The calcium and phosphorus content in the gravidic uterus had the fetal weight as main variation factor.

This research was carried out in order to evaluate effects of pregnancy, fetus number and nutritional restriction on ingestive behavior of ewes. Were used 24 ewes of the breed Santa Ines evaluated at 90, 110 and 130 pregnancy days distributed among treatments according to fetus number. They received free or restricted diet, the last one with reduction of 15% of protein and energy requirements. Ewes were individually observed each five minutes for three days, being two periods of 24 h intercalated with 24 h of resting. During the observations was determinated the time spent in feeding, rumination, idle and chewing. Feed management did not influence time spent in feeding. In both pregnancy categories, at 90 days of pregnancy the animals spent less time in rumination and feeding. Ewes on nutritional restriction ruminate longer time and at 90 days of pregnancy spent less time ruminating. Ewes with twin fetus spent less time chewing than with single pregnancy. Pregnancy progress increased time spent to feeding, rumination ant chewing. Nutritional restriction increased idle time in ewes with one fetus. Ewes with single and twin pregnancy showed variable ingestive behavior at the studied phases.

Foi avaliada a influência da gestação, do número de fetos e da restrição nutricional no comportamento ingestivo de 24 ovelhas Santa Inês avaliadas aos 90, 110 e 130 dias de gestação, divididas entre os tratamentos em função do número de fetos. Essas receberam dietas à vontade ou restritas, sendo essa com redução de 15% nos requisitos de proteína e energia. As ovelhas foram observadas individualmente, a cada 5 minutos, por 3 dias, sendo dois períodos de 24 h intercalado com 24 h de descanso. Durante as observações foram determinando os tempos gastos com ingestão, ruminação, ócio e mastigação. O manejo nutricional não influenciou o tempo gasto com a ingestão. Em ambas as categorias de prenhez, aos 90 dias de gestação, as ovelhas despenderam menos tempo para ingestão do alimento. Animais recebendo dieta restrita ruminaram mais tempo e aos 90 dias de gestação despenderam menos tempo ruminando. Ovelhas gestantes de dois fetos gastaram menos tempo mastigando do que as de gestação simples. O avanço da gestação aumentou o tempo despendido com ingestão, ruminação e mastigação. A restrição nutricional aumentou o tempo em ócio de ovelhas com um feto. Animais gestantes de um e dois fetos apresentaram comportamento ingestivo variável nas fases da gestação estudadas.

Avaliaram-se o consumo e a digestibilidade aparente da matéria seca, da proteína bruta e da energia e o balanço de nitrogênio de silagens de Brachiaria brizantha cvmarandusem aditivos (T1), B. brizantha cvmarandu + inoculante bacteriano Sil-ALL C4 (T2), B. brizantha cvmarandu + inoculante bacteriano Bactosilo C Tropical (T3) e B. brizantha cvmarandu + 30% de cana-de-açúcar (T4) em ovinos. Não foram observadas diferenças no consumo de matéria seca (MS), proteína bruta (PB), energia bruta (EB), energia digestível (ED) e energia metabolizável (EM) entre os tratamentos (P>0,05). Os maiores valores de digestibilidade aparente da MS, PB e EB foram para o T2, de 60,9%, 44,3% e 57,5%, respectivamente, e os menores para o T4, 53,0%, 30,0% e 49,5%, respectivamente (P<0,05). Todos os tratamentos apresentaram balanço de nitrogênio positivo e não diferiram entre si. A utilização de inoculantes bacterianos ou cana-de-açúcar não indicou aumento de consumo da matéria seca e energia das silagens. O inoculante SiL ALL C4 (T2) mostrou-se eficiente em aumentar o consumo e a digestibilidade da PB.

This experiment was carried out to estimate the voluntary intake, apparent digestibility and nitrogen balance of silages of Brachiaria brizantha cv marandu without additives (T1), B. brizantha cv marandu + inoculant Sil-ALL C4 (T2), B. brizantha cv marandu + inoculant Bactosilo C Tropical (T3) and B. brizantha cv marandu + 30% of Sugar cane (T4) in sheep. No differences among silages regarding voluntary intake of: dry matter, crude protein, crude energy, digestible energy and metabolizable energy were found (P>0.05). The highest apparent digestibility of dry matter, crude protein and crude energy were observed for T2, being 60.8%, 44.2% and 57.5%, respectively, and the lowest for T4, with 53.0%, 30.0% and 49.5%, respectively (P<0.05). All treatments showed positive nitrogen balance and did not differ among them. The use of an inoculant or sugar cane did not result in voluntary intake increase of dry matter, fibrous fractions and energy of silages. The inoculant Sil ALL C4 was efficient in increasing the intake and digestibility of CP and nitrogen balance.

No bioma cerrado, nos anos de 2006 e 2007, estudou-se a influência do sistema silvipastoril composto pela arbórea bolsa-de-pastor (Zeyheria tuberculosa) sobre a cinética de fermentação ruminal in vitro da gramínea Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu. O sistema silvipastoril foi estabelecido em 1982, em latossolos vermelho-amarelo pela regeneração natural da espécie arbórea. No ensaio de cinética de fermentação ruminal in vitro, usou-se o delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, em parcelas subdivididas, sendo as parcelas o sistema silvipastoril e o monocultivo de B. brachiaria, e as subparcelas os períodos de colheita durante o ano, com três repetições por tratamento. A cinética de fermentação ruminal foi equivalente entre os sistemas estudados. Na estação das chuvas, as forrageiras foram mais fermentáveis do que nos períodos de transição. As forrageiras colhidas no período seco apresentaram menor fermentabilidade.

The influence of a silvopastoral system composed of Bolsa de Pastor (Zeyheria tuberculosa) on in vitro kinetics of ruminal fermentation of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu was evaluated at Cerrado bioma, in the years 2006 and 2007. The silvopastoral was established in 1982, by natural regeneration of tree species in red-yellow oxisols. The trials on kinetics of ruminal fermentation were carried out in a split-plot design with three replicates. The silvopastoril system and the monoculture of Brachiaria were allocated as plots and the harvest periods as the split-plots. Kinetics of ruminal fermentation in the systems were similar. However, during the rainy season, the forage was highly fermentable in comparison to the transition season. The forage harvested during the dry season showed lower fermentability.

Chemical composition and dry matter (DM) productivity of 25 genotypes of sorghum were obtained. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with 25 treatments and three replications each. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and the means grouped by Scott-Knot Test (5%). The level of DM productivity varied from 6.82 to 14.17ton/hectare, and the higher level was obtained by VOLUMAX genotype (16.09 ton/hectare). The levels of crude protein varied from 5.24 to 7.79%. No differences were detected between the genotypes to neutral detergent fiber levels, which varied from 59.03 to 73.04%. Considering the level of acid detergent fiber, the variation interval was 26.78 to 40.92%. The better genotypes for silage production were ATF54*9929036, CMSXS212*9929048, CMSXS217*9929012, and VOLUMAX.

Foram avaliadas as silagens de quatro genótipos de girassol (Helianthus annuus) (Rumbosol 91, Victoria 627, Victoria 807 e Mycogen 93338), pela técnica semiautomática de produção de gases. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos ao acaso, em esquema de parcelas subdivididas, sendo as médias comparadas pelo teste SNK (p<0,05). O genótipo Rumbosol 91 apresentou a maior produção acumulativa de gases para o tempo de 96 horas de incubação com valor de 128,47mL/g de MS, e o menor valor foi observado para o genótipo Victoria 807 com 92,88. Não foram observadas diferenças entre os valores de degradabilidade da matéria seca (DMS) para as silagens avaliadas nos diferentes tempos. O potencial máximo de produção de gases variou de 91,67 para o genótipo Victoria 807 a 125,46mL/g de MS para a silagem do genótipo Rumbosol 91. O genótipo Rumbosol 91 apresentou a maior DMS para as taxas de passagem de 2 e 5% com valores de 46,39 e 43,26%. O maior valor para taxa de passagem (8%) foi observado para o genótipo Victoria 627. As silagens dos genótipos Rumbosol 91 e Victoria 627 mostraram destacado potencial para produção de gases e taxa de produção de gases.

Four silages from distinct sunflower (Helianthus annuus) genotypes (Rumbosol 91, Victoria 627, 807 Victoria, and Mycogen 93338) were evaluated by semi-automated in vitro gas production technique in a completely random block design in a split plot scheme. The means were compared by the SNK test (P<0.05). Rumbosol 91 genotype showed the highest cumulative gas production after 96 hours of incubation, reaching 128.47mL/g of dry matter (DM), and the lowest value, 92.88mL/g, was observed for Victoria 807 genotype. No differences between silage dry matter digestibility (DMD) values at different times were observed (P>0.05). Maximum potential gas production ranged from 91.67 for Victoria 807 to 125.46mL/g of DM Rumbosol 91. Genotype Rumbosol 91 showed the highest DMD for fermentation rate of 2 (46.39%) and 5% (43.26%), and the highest values for fermentation rate of 8% was observed for Victoria 627 genotype. Silages from Rumbosol 91 and Victoria 627 genotypes showed outstanding potential of gases production and rate of gases production.

Avaliaram-se o consumo, a digestibilidade aparente e o comportamento ingestivo de ovelhas no terço final de gestação com dietas contendo diferentes níveis de fibra em detergente neutro forrageiro (FDNf). Foram utilizadas 16 ovelhas adultas da raça Santa Inês, distribuídas em um delineamento inteiramente ao acaso, com quatro tratamentos: 9, 17, 26 e 35% de FDNf. Os consumos de matéria seca, matéria orgânica, proteína bruta, energia bruta, energia digestível e energia metabolizável não foram influenciados pelos tratamentos, e os consumos de fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e de fibra em detergente ácido (FDA) aumentaram com maiores níveis de FDNf. As digestibilidades do FDN e FDA e o tempo gasto pelos animais com ruminação também aumentaram com maiores níveis de FDNf na dieta. Dietas com maior quantidade de FDNf influenciaram comportamento ingestivo e digestibilidade de ovelhas em fase final de lactação.

The intake, apparent digestibility and feeding behavior of pregnant ewes ped diets containing different levels of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) were evaluated. Sixteen Santa Inês ewes were randomly assigned to four treatments with 9, 17, 26 e 35% of NDF. Dry matter (DM), organic matter, crude protein, crude energy, digestible energy and metabolizable energy intake were not affected by the level of NDF in the diet, however, NDF and acid detergent fiber (ADF) intake increased with the increase of NDF diet levels. The apparent digestibility of the NDF and ADF and rumination time increased with the NDF diet level. Higher NDF diet levels influenced feeding behavior and apparent digestibility of ewes at the end of the lactation period.

Utilizaram-se 20 leitões machos castrados, com 28kg de peso, em ensaio biológico baseado em coleta total de fezes e de urina para a determinação dos valores de digestibilidade aparente da matéria seca (DAMS), de digestibilidade aparente da proteína bruta (DAPB), de energia digestível aparente (EDA) e de energia metabolizável aparente (EMA) de grãos de sorgo com diferentes texturas do endosperma. Os genótipos avaliados foram BR 007B (textura macia), BR 304 (textura intermediária) e SC 283 (textura dura). As dietas-teste foram compostas por 70% de dieta referência, à base de milho e de farelo de soja, e por 30% de grãos de sorgo. O experimento foi montado em esquema inteiramente ao acaso, com quatro tratamentos e cinco repetições. Os valores de DAMS, de DAPB, de EDA e de EMA, expressos na matéria seca, dos grãos do genótipo BR 007B foram 97,1%, 89,7%, 3.840kcal/kg e 3.685kcal/kg; os do genótipo BR 304 foram 92,0%, 82,9%, 3.645kcal/kg e 3.544kcal/kg; e os do genótipo SC 283 foram 83,3%, 78,5%, 3.078kcal/kg e 3.021 kcal/kg, respectivamente. Todas as quatro variáveis analisadas apresentaram valores mais altos (P<0,05) para o genótipo BR 007B em relação ao genótipo SC 283, demonstrando a influência negativa da textura do endosperma sobre o valor nutritivo dos grãos de sorgo para suínos.

Twenty hogs averaging 28kg were used in a biological assay based on total feces and urine collection method. The dry matter apparent digestibility (DMAD), the crude protein apparent digestibility (CPAD), the apparent digestible energy (ADE), and the apparent metabolizable energy (AME) values of the sorghum grains with different endosperm texture were calculated. The evaluated genotypes were: BR 007B (soft texture), BR 304 (intermediate texture), and SC 283 (hard texture). The test diets were composed by 70% of reference diet (based on corn and soybean meal) and 30% of sorghum grain. The experiment was a complete random design, with four treatments and five replicates. The DMAD, CPAD, ADE, and AME values, on dry matter basis, calculated for the genotype BR 007B were 97.1%, 89.7%, 3,840kcal/kg, and 3,685kcal/kg; for the genotype BR 304 they were 92.0%, 82.9%, 3,645kcal/kg, and 3,544kcal/kg; and for the genotype SC 283 they were 83.3%, 78.5%, 3,078kcal/kg, and 3,021kcal/kg, respectively. All analyzed variables presented higher values (P<0.05) for the genotype BR 007B in relation to the genotype SC 283, demonstrating the negative influence of the endosperm texture on the nutritional value of the sorghum grains for swine.

Avaliou-se a cinética de fermentação ruminal de capim-braquiarão cortado aos 28, 56, 84 e 112 dias de rebrota, mediante o uso da técnica in vitro semi-automática de produção de gases. A relação entre a digestibilidade da matéria seca e a produção acumulada de gases foi linear em todas as idades ao corte. O capim-braquiarão cortado aos 28 e aos 56 dias apresentou a maior taxa de produção de gases em torno das 18 horas de incubação, enquanto na forragem cortada aos 84 e 112 dias a maior taxa foi observada após 48 horas de incubação. Em todos os tempos de incubação a produção acumulada de gases foi maior na forragem cortada aos 28 e aos 56 dias. Conclui-se que o melhor momento de utilização do capim-braquiarão está entre as idades de 28 e de 56 dias, devido à maior fermentabilidade ruminal da forrageira cortada nessas idades.

Fermentation kinetics of Brachiaria brizantha cv Marandu harvested on 28, 56, 84, and 112 days of growth was evaluated with the semi-automatic in vitro gas production technique. Regression equations between volume of gas and dry-matter digestibility during fermentation periods of treatments were linear. Marandu grass harvested on 28 and 56 days of growth showed the greatest rate of gas production around 18 hours of incubation, while the rate of gas production of forages cut at 84 and 112 days reached the peak at 36 hours of incubation. Cumulative gas production was higher on 28 and 56 days of harvest intervals than grass harvested on 84 and 112 days. Therefore, the best harvest stage for using Brachiaria brizantha cv Marandu were between 28 and 56 days due to highest ruminal fermentability.
